“I think the strength of the boys squad is that we have a solid group of guys that have the ability to run a pack race,” Turner said. “We have a few newcomers that are going to make a push for some varsity spots, and I anticipate they will be an invaluable addition to the team.”
For the girls, Emma Peck, Karina Murray and Carley Appel are the top runners back this year.

As with any cross country program, con tinued progress through the fall is the best way to reach long-term goals. That is the same with Webster City and head coach Derek Turner, who enters his third season leading the Lynx. Turner has a strong group of returning runners on both the boys and girls squads, and believes the group is put together to compete throughout the regular season as they work toward returning to the state meet in Fort Dodge later this year.

“Our girls squad has a ton of varsity expe rience coming back this year,” Turner said. “Lead by Emma Peck, I think we are going to see a lot of growth from some of our under classman as they now know what it takes to compete at this level.”
The girls finished seventh at the NCC and were 12th at the state-qualifier, with Peck fin ishing in 23rd. “As with any year in XC, the one objective as a runner/team is to get faster and score better when it comes to meets,” Turner said. “To do this on the boys side, we have to re ally have that core pack of varsity runners run together and not settle. I think the key to our success is having a tight pack of runners and using that to our advantage when it comes to competing in races.
Turner, a Webster City graduate, took over as head coach in 2020. He was an assistant under Joe Lambert. While competing for the Lynx, Turner was a four-year runner under the legendary Tony Bussan — a former coach who remains just a message away for any advice.

“As a team, both boys and girls the main goal we have this year to compete and race with intention. To compete and place well within our conference it is neccessary for us to start being more strategic in our strategies.”
Webster City was a dominant program for years under Bussan, and Turner wants to see them return to that form under his guidance and“Asteaching.ateam, both boys and girls, the main goal we have this year is to compete and race with intention,” he said. “To compete and place well within our conference it is neces sary for us to start being more strategic in our racing strategies. “If we can go out there and compete and improve week to week, I would consider that a success.”Webster City will run in Humboldt at the NCC meet on Oct. 11. At the North Central Conference meet a year ago, the Lynx placed sixth in the boys team standings and were 11th overall at the state qualifier. Rahe placed 44th at the SQM event and is the top returning placer for the team from that race.
“With our girls squad, we really need to take that next step. The step being not settling into a spot where we are comfortable. I think last year we got our feet wet a bit...now it is time for us to move forward and start com peting towards the front half of the runners.”

Webster City used its physical style and system consistency to capture another district championship last fall.
“We should be competitive in the dis trict. As always, we need to stay healthy,” said Howard, a Hall of Famer with a career record of 358-106 overall and 109-57 at WCHS. “We return 3,000-plus yards on offense (Hisler with 1,032 yards rushing, Cherry at 936, McKinney 708 and Hanson 377), and have seven starters back on de fense, including several two- or three-year starters.
“All five offensive linemen and our punter graduated. But we have good team speed, depth at skill positions, and more size in the line than in 2020 or 2021.”
Last fall, no league rival came within an earshot of Webster City, which won all of its district contests by 14 points or more. After a 1-2 start to the year, Howard’s squad reeled off seven consecutive victo ries, scoring 35 or more points six times and allowing more than 14 only twice.
Honorable mention all-district lineback er Tucker Pederson is in the mix again this year as well for Fort Dodge, along with fellow veteran starters Orion Larson-Trott (LB), Kaleb Lynch (DL), Collin Munter (OL) and Keaton Nichols (OL), “This is going to be a really competi tive district,” Moser said. “Webster City
