First three named storms this year will be Arlene, Bret, Cindy Igor was retired from list of hurricane names Hurricane season starts June 1 but heats up in our area by late August Earl and Igor

@METRONEWS.CA

Just because there are fewer hurricanes forecast for this year than there were in 2010 doesn’t mean it’s time to relax, warned officials on Thursday. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the 2011 hurricane season will be very active, with a predicted 12 to 18 named storms. Six to 10 of them are predicted to be hurricanes; three to six, major hurricanes. Last year there were 19 named storms and five major hurricanes. Record warm surface temperatures in the North Atlantic mixed with the predicted absence of storm-calming El Nino in the Pacific are providing the foundations for powerful storms this year. And it just takes a direct hit

Earl and Igor were the big hurricanes that crashed into Atlantic Canada last year. Earl caused power outages and tree damage to several neighbourhoods in HRM on Sept. 4. Two weeks later, Igor, considered one of the worst storms in Newfoundland’s history, left floods and wind damage in its wake.

from one of them to make it a bad year, said Chris Fogarty with the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth. “If it’s a quiet prediction for this year, it shouldn’t change your overall readiness,” he said. And it doesn’t take a named storm to cause intense damage like the one that hit Meat Cove last year, said Andy Lathem with

the province’s Emergency Management Office. “We don’t really mind if a hurricane decides to give Nova Scotia a wide berth, but we want to be ready for it anyway because we know from experience they all won’t be so generous,” Lathem said. And the 2011 outlook, while more modest than last year’s, is still above-average for a hurricane season. Fogarty said hurricanes have been plentiful in the past several years and will likely be above average for at least the next six years. “There really is no correlation between overall amount of storms versus what makes it up into Eastern Canada,” Fogarty said. “We want people to have the same state of readiness regardless of the seasonal forecast.”

The woman accused of killing Dillon Jewett may be working out a deal. CBC is reporting the lawyer for Amanda Greene said negotiations are underway and they may resolve the case. Her case was adjourned until May 30. The 18-year-old woman from Cow Bay is charged with first-degree murder along with brothers Kyle and Steven Gowan. James Patterson was charged with accessory to murder after the fact. Jewett, 18, was found on a path near an East Uniacke quarry in October. METRO

Wouldn’t this be a potential heavyweight battle? A new poll suggests residents of HRM are split down the middle on a vote for mayor between Peter Kelly and Mike Savage. The Corporate Research Associates poll released Thursday says among decided voters, 47 per support Kelly, with Savage right behind at 46 per cent. Another seven per cent

said they wouldn’t vote for either candidate. In total, 403 HRM residents were surveyed, with 19 per cent undecided. Kelly has said he will run for another term in 2012, while Savage’s name has been bandied about as a possible contender ever since he lost his federal seat in Dartmouth-Cole Harbour during the May 2 federal election to Robert Chisholm of the NDP. “These numbers would suggest (for Savage), given no sort of campaigning or any-

The poll was conducted from May 3 to 14 and is accurate within 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. “We’ve run a lot of names over the last few years … and Savage has done the best, I think, in terms of being very competitive with a mayor who, of course, has a very solid, strong support base,” Mills said. “Although, it may not be as strong as it used to be.”

Man stabbed in Cole Harbour park Police say a 22-year-old man was taken to hospital with a serious stab wound after an altercation with someone at a park near Caldwell Road in Cole Harbour on Thursday evening. RCMP say the victim was taken to Dartmouth General Hospital by a friend around 6 p.m., and police were contacted. METRO

Man faces hundreds of child porn charges Police say the over 250 child pornography charges facing a Cape Breton man are the most ever laid against a single person in Nova Scotia. David Carter Roger Archibald of Ingonish Beach, Victoria Co., was charged on Wednesday with 176 counts of distribution of child pornography and 76 counts of making child pornography.

“It’s the largest amount of charges I’ve ever laid in my career at one time,” said Const. Paul Smith of the Nova Scotia RCMP Internet Child Exploitation Unit. Archibald also faced a single count of possessing child pornography. He pleaded guilty to that charge on Thursday. The 62-year-old turned himself into the Ingonish RCMP at about 7:30 a.m. on

Wednesday after “an agreement was made between the Crown prosecutor and his defence counsel,” said Smith. Police say the charges follow a 20-month-long investigation and cover a period from January 2008 to January 2011. In January, RCMP searched and seized a number of computers and equipment from

A 24-year-old woman is the latest to be charged in connection with the murder of Brandon Lewis Hatcher. And Halifax Regional Police say more arrests could be coming. Sarah Marie Oakley was arrested on Wednesday at a Dartmouth address and was charged with accessory after the fact. Oakley’s long brown hair covered her face as she walked into Halifax provincial court on Thursday. She was wearing baggy black sweat pants and a navy-blue T-shirt with a sweater tied over her shoulders.

She was remanded until Friday, when she will appear at Nova Scotia Supreme Court for a bail hearing. Halifax Regional Police spokeswoman Theresa Rath said the investigation into the Dec. 3 shooting is ongoing and “there could be additional arrests.” “We won’t rule it out at this time,” she said. Earlier this year, Cody Alexander Muise, 21, and a 17-year-old youth who cannot be named were charged with the first-degree murder of 22-year-old Hatcher. An 18-year-old man was also charged with first-degree murder, but that was dropped last week. On Dec. 3, just after 8:30

Acquittal of woman accused of hiring hit man being appealed The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service is appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada the acquittal of a woman accused of attempting to hire a man to kill her husband. Nicole Ryan of Digby was arrested in March 2008 and tried in Nova Scotia Supreme Court on a charge of counselling another person to commit murder. She was acquitted last year. The Crown appealed the decision to Nova Scotia Appeal Court, which dismissed the appeal earlier this year. THE CANADIAN PRESS

p.m., police were called to the 100 block of Lavender Walk in Spryfield where they found a man who had been shot. Hatcher was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after. Police say the incident is linked to ongoing youth gang rivalries in the Spryfield area, which they have tied to at least two other shootings just prior to Hatcher’s death.

News in brief

Sarah Marie Oakley is escorted out of Halifax provincial court on Thursday.

Three people have been charged following a drug bust in Antigonish. Those charged include a 59-year-old Stellarton woman, a 38year-old man also from Stellarton, and a 36year-old New Glasgow man. THE CANADIAN PRESS

David Arsenault is one of four HRM Red Cross volunteers heading to Slave Lake, Alta., this weekend. “It’s an interesting mission because it’s in our backyard, and I’m very humbled to receive the call and help out fellow Canadians,” he said. There are eight volunteers from Nova Scotia, three from Newfoundland and Labrador, and three from New Brunswick. They’ll land in Edmonton in the next few days and they’ll be sent to various locations to help the evacuees with emergency aid.

Arsenault is flying out of Halifax on Friday night. “I just had a feeling we’d be deployed,” he said. “They’re looking for people with experience in certain areas so it’s quite an honour to represent Canada and be chosen.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper will tour areas affected by wildfires with Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach on Friday. Dexter pans Harper’s Senate appointments

Review ordered after jail assault It took jail guards fourand-a-half hours to call police after an inmate was severely injured last week and Justice Minister Ross Landry wants to know why. A 49-year-old man fell down stairs after an alleged fight with another inmate and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. But Landry said the delay in notifying police will be reviewed. “I’m not alarmed at the time delay but I’m asking the question as to how that occurred, he told reporters Thursday.

Assault charge Patrick Carl Shea, 39, has been charged with aggravated assault in relation to the incident.

Justice Minister Ross Landry

Even though there was a delay, Landry said he was satisfied the injured inmate was taken care of quickly, other inmates were secured properly and the evidence was protected. There’s no policy in place for guards directing them to call police after an incident, and Landry said he’s asked his staff to look into it. He added he’ll wait until he’s given all the details of what happened before making a call on whether the delay was appropriate or not. JENNIFER TAPLIN

Health Minister Maureen MacDonald tabled a report Thursday in the legislature that showed ERs were shut down for 18,920 hours in 2010-11, or the equivalent of about 788 days. The Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon is closing in on five-digit participation for the first time in its history. As of Thursday, more than 9,300 runners had registered for the eighth annual race in Halifax and Dartmouth, and organizers expect more than 1,000 additional sign-ups on Friday and Saturday. That would push the Blue Nose past the 10,000 mark. A record 9,428 turned out last year. “We’re right on target with our forecast,” said Blue Nose co-chair Rod

The Macdonald Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday and reduced to one lane from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while the Barrington Street ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Theresa Rath urged motorists to be alert. “We really want people to be cautious,” she said. “We want to ensure that everyone is doing their part to ensure the safety of both the runners and the spectators.”

Faith in food safety faltering RYAN TAPLIN/METRO

When it comes to the food we eat, a survey finds a majority will pay more for local because we feel it’s safer Feds take heat for not fixing food-safety issues

More and more HRM residents have concerns when it comes to the safety of their food. According to my polling, over 40 per cent are highly concerned when it comes to the topic, and eight in 10 are more worried about food safety today than we were five years ago. Our respondents held strong opinions about what

Sixty-two per cent indicate they are very concerned about the use of pesticides; 64 per cent say chemicals; and 62 per cent point to the presence of bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli. There is also concern about genetically modified foods, particularly among young and older adults. Fifty-nine per cent of respondents from the ages of 18 and 25 indicate they are

very concerned. How is all this concern affecting our daily shopping behaviour? On this front, the findings are a little unclear. Twenty-nine per cent say they have stopped buying a particular brand in the past 12 months because of a food recall, and 38 per cent report they are willing to pay more money for organic products. But a whopping 77 per cent say they are willing to pay more for local products because of a concern over food safety. If in fact our research has uncovered a crisis of confidence in the food safety system, who do we feel bears the responsibility to

Nova Scotians who sustained uninsured property damage during four days of heavy rain in December will be eligible for disaster relief. Justice Minister Ross Landry announced a $3-million relief program on Thursday morning during a press conference. Up to 130 millimetres of rain fell in mid-December, causing damage from Digby County through much of central and eastern Nova Scotia, including Cape Bre-

ton. Parts of HRM were also affected. The disaster-assistance program is the third in six months for Nova Scotia. The latest program is cost-shared by Nova Scotia and Ottawa, with the province contributing about $2 million of the total. In all, about $16 million has been provided for damage caused by storms in the province last year.

Watchdog consulted on Elections Act Nova Scotia’s privacy watchdog says the premier’s office asked to consult her after she raised a red flag about a new law that could violate the privacy of voters. Great Firewall designer pelted Egg, shoes allegedly thrown at Chinese online censor Chinese police were seeking the man who allegedly threw an egg and shoes Thursday at the computer scientist famous for designing China’s Great Firewall of web controls. The attack — if true — is a particularly bold one for China and underscores how strongly people feel about the country’s strict Internet censorship. A Twitter user posting under the name “hanunyi” claimed that one of the shoes struck computer expert Fang Binxing while he was visiting Wuhan University in Hubei province. Fang, president of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, is popularly known as the “fa-

was on his way to the airport. Hanunyi posted a live account of the alleged shoe toss on his Twitter page, including photos of the door to the lecture hall where it happened, a hand clutching an egg in preparation and bare feet after he fled. He described running away from the scene and three hours later expressed surprise at the huge online response. Chinese web filters routinely block searches for content that authorities deem too politically sensitive, such as the banned spiritual group Falun Gong or jailed Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo. Red Shirts unite Leaders of last year’s antigovernment “Red Shirt” protests have registered their candidacies for a July 3 general election as the politics of the street converges with the politics of the ballot in Thailand. The Pheu Thai Party associated with deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his “Red Shirt” supporters drew the desirable No. 1 spot in the election. By chance, the ballot draw took place on the oneyear anniversary of the army’s crushing of a twomonth-long Red Shirt protest in central Bangkok.

EU leaders agreed to test 143 reactors, but some are opposed to tests involving potential terror attacks.

Female university grads looking for their first jobs expect to earn less than men, and those lower expectations may be the reason the actual wage gap persists, a new study says. “Women know they currently aren’t earning as much as men, so they enter the workforce with that expectation,” said Sean Lyons, a University of Guelph researcher who

helped conduct the study. “Because they don’t expect to earn as much, they likely aren’t as aggressive when it comes to negotiating salaries or pay raises and will accept lower-paying jobs than men, which perpetuates the existing inequalities.” When asked to estimate their starting salaries, female students entering the work world predicted their

pay cheques would be 14 per cent lower than the wages men said they expected to pull. The gap widened over the course of their anticipated careers, with women expecting to make 18 per cent less than men after five years. And it was most pronounced in maledominated fields such as science and engineering. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Rookie MPs bask in camaraderie as they tour Parliament buildings They were warned about the perils of life in Parliament — the stress on their marriages, the strain on their health, the long hours, the tricky business of hiring the right staff. But rookie MPs attending their freshman orientation session Thursday also got a glimpse of the camaraderie life on the benches breeds. “In that room, no one had the logo Conservative or Green or Liberal or what not, so it’s just interesting to be with a great bunch of people for the 41st Parliament, said Dan Albas, a B.C. A sample of the member home page for i.playboy.com.

Good news for those who thought their copies of Playboy were gone forever when their moms found them and threw them away. Playboy launched a webbased subscription service Thursday called i.playboy.com that allows viewers to see every single page of every single magazine — from the first issue nearly 60 years ago that fea-

tured Marilyn Monroe to the ones hitting the newsstands today. “They no longer have to store 57 years — 682 issues — of Playboy under their mattress,” said Jimmy Jellinek, Playboy’s chief content officer. Chicago-based Playboy has seen its circulation plummet to 1.5 million today from 3.15 million in 2006 and has been trying

all sorts of gimmicks to attract readers in recent years. One issue included a set of 3-D glasses to better see a centrefold shot in 3-D; another turned over the cover to a cartoon character, Marge Simpson. Jellinek calls the website “the world’s sexiest time machine” and “an anthology of cool” for a magazine he refers to as “the Mount Rushmore of literary great-

ness.” But one industry analyst makes Playboy sound more like a tired, dusty half-empty amusement park. “The problem with Playboy is it not only lost its powerful interviews, but it lost its lead,” said Samir Husni, director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the University of Mississippi School of Journalism. What’s in a name? A family for one man

Man reunited with family 66 years after separation from mother in Second World War Meets nephew in first visit to Germany since war Peter Jaunzemis went by the name George for more than six decades, but always wondered whether the Latvian refugee who brought him to New Zealand and raised him there was really his mother. “She didn’t act like a mother,” Jaunzemis, 69, said Thursday of the woman, Anna Jaunzemis. “She was cold, she never took me in her arms and never referred to me as her son.” Jaunzemis recently discovered his true identity through the help of the International Tracing Service (ITS) in the central

German town of Bad Arolsen. For more than a decade, Jaunzemis sought to trace his Latvian family roots. He found nothing, not even a birth certificate. “I was getting nowhere, trying every variant I could think of, but it felt like I was turning in circles,” Jaunzemis said. Finally, a friend who was tracing her own family history suggested he turn to the ITS, which holds troves of Second World War-era documents, including refugee lists, registers from displaced persons or DP camps, and missing per-

But it also held another name, Peter van de Velde — a boy with the same birth date as Jaunzemis who had been removed from his mother at a DP camp in Belgium in June 1945. The file, stuffed with

more than 150 tattered, yellowing pages, contained old photos and letters from Jaunzemis’s natural mother, Gertrud van de Velde, who for years sought her son. She died in Brussels in 2009, months before he first wrote to the ITS. Nevertheless Jaunzemis, who now goes by Peter, said he is relieved to finally know who he is and that he has family. Spy vs. Spy: Israel-Russia edition

Peter Jaunzemis, 69, who was separated from his mother in the final days of the Second World War, displays a photograph showing his parents at the International Tracing Service in Bad Arolsen, Germany.

An Israeli military attaché to Moscow who was expelled from Russia last week was carrying secret information when he was detained, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said. Vadim Leiderman was apprehended in Moscow on May 12, caught red-handed receiving classified information from a Russian citizen, the statement said. Leiderman was declared persona non grata and given 48 hours to leave the country, which he did. Israel’s military rejected allegations that Leiderman was a spy, saying in a statement the officer was debriefed after he returned. Gad Shimron, an intelligence expert and former field operative for the Mossad, told Israel’s Channel 10 TV that based on the information he knows, the odds of Leiderman being a spy are “extremely small.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Report blames company for U.S. coal mine blast

Mississippi. Flood

An independent investigation concludes the West Virginia coal mine explosion that killed 29 men last year was the result of safety failings by owner Massey Energy Co. and rejects the company’s argument that a sudden gas buildup caused the blast. The report released Thursday said Massey violated basic safety practices, including not ventilating the tunnels enough.

U.S. spy agency apologizes for employee’s tweet Post quickly taken down, but re-tweets keep it alive

The U.S. Secret Service should consider reverting to code. The information-gathering organization decided to open a Twitter account this month, and while it isn’t regaling us with tales of terror raids and false moustaches, the organization is letting us know it isn’t fans of Fox News — at least one employee isn’t. “(H)ad to monitor Fox for a story. Can’t. Deal. With. The. Blathering,” a tweet from @SecretService, the service’s official account, read Thursday. The post was quickly taken down, but as the Secret Service probably knows, that which is posted on the World Wide Web

rarely vanishes for good. Re-tweets of the offending message appeared on Twitter and others offered screen grabs. And then there were the conspiracy theories: “Secret Service tweet is now gone. Rogue agent? Or hackers? Would be sad if Secret Service was no more

secure than Lindsay Lohan,” tweeted Time writer Amy Sullivan, who also retweeted the original post. The Secret Service has since apologized. It also said the vanishing tweet had been posted by an employee with access to the service’s account who mistakenly believed they were on their personal account. But why are the Secret Service’s Twitter novices watching Fox? “Our public affairs employees monitor all the news channels throughout the day for stories that affect the Secret Service,” special agent in charge Edwin M. Donovan told ABC News. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Praise for Arab Spring Bin Laden commends protests in taped message Attempts to stake a claim for al-Qaida in protests led mainly by frustrated youth GETTY IMAGES

In a recording made shortly before his death, Osama bin Laden praised the mass protests that have toppled and shaken longtime rulers across the Arab world while trying to cast a role for al-Qaida. Bin Laden’s message, released on militant websites Thursday, is an attempt by the terror leader to remain relevant after sweeping changes in which al-Qaida played almost no role. “The winds of change will spread through the entire Islamic world, God willing,” bin Laden said. He proclaimed it a “religious obligation” to form a council that would provide guidance for all Muslims — apparently a way for al-Qaida to play a role in the protests’ fu-

Economist’s inadvertent email reveals Bank of Canada governor doesn’t think the financial crisis over SEAN KILPATRICK/THE CANADIAN PRESS

Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney may be more pessimistic about the prospects for recovery in the U.S. and Europe than he lets on in public. A glimpse of the central banker’s gloomier view was offered in an email to clients from CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfeld after Carney gave a private assessment at a Toronto dinner Wednesday night. The comments were supposed to be off the record, but Shenfeld admitted in a later email

Mark Carney

that he had been mistaken about the matter and asked clients to ignore his earlier comments. According to Shenfeld’s note, Carney said the global financial crisis is not over, painting a bleak-

er picture of the recovery in developed countries. Even in Canada, which he said was in a solid position, it is too early to celebrate about how well the country emerged from recession, saying a true perspective might not be known until five years down the road. But the most stark comments were reserved for the United States, which remains in political gridlock over how to deal with high deficits and mounting accumulated debt. THE CANADIAN PRESS

SPEAKING OF THE APOCALYPSE ... THE METRO LIST 1

End days. According to Harold Camping, the head of the Christian radio network Family ANDREW WALLACE Stations Inc., the world will METRO end Saturday. Apparently, an earthquake will shake the Earth and the true believers will be swept up to heaven, while the rest of us are left behind to bear witness to the destruction of all human life. From Camping: “We know without any shadow of a doubt it is going to happen.” Uh, OK? Freedom of expression. Tyler the Creator, the frontman for Odd Future and one of hip hop’s weirdest up-and-comers, recently received the ire of one-half of Tegan and Sara for his misogynistic and homophobic lyrical content. A library reconceived for the information economy could be more valuable than ever, and a librarian calibrated to meet today’s information challenges could be its greatest asset. The Biebs. This week Forbes magazine announced that Justin Bieber, the boy wonder from Stratford, Ont., is officially the third most influential celebrity in the world. He has made teen girls swoon, sold out a world tour and starred in a top-grossing film, not to mention selling his footwear and hair on eBay for $5,500 and $40,558, respectively. Apparently, that’s the stuff influence is made of. Speaking of the Apocalypse … James Frey. The famous author (and noted liar) is on tour in Canada to promote his new book, The Final Testament of the Holy Bible. On Wednesday, he was in Toronto to discuss the work with Indigo “chief book lover” Heather Reisman, which will surely be a boon for sales. Letters WHITE ROCK, B.C. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s latest Senate appointments must be called into question. Senators are to be a check on the prime minister, his cabinet and his House of Commons majority. They have the responsibility of providing “sober second thought” from their appointed positions. Appointing defeated candidates to the Senate cannot be considered otherwise than directly conflicting with this responsibility. Have Harper’s purely partisan personal appointees committed to voting as he pleases? Is that not vote buying? Is Harper not again in contempt of Parliament in making such appointments? Neither abolishing nor electing senators serves the purpose that the chamber was meant to serve when Canada came into being. A process that will enable the Senate to play its designated role that Harper has completely destroyed is to have senators appointed by the Governor General upon the recommendation of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.

She may be a little slow on the draw, though The highest court in Oregon unanimously ruled Thursday that retired bus driver Cynthia Willis can have her medical marijuana and a concealed handgun, too. The ruling issued in Salem, Ore., upheld previous decisions by the Oregon Court of Appeals and circuit court in finding that a federal law barring criminals and drug addicts from buying firearms does not excuse sheriffs

from issuing concealed weapons permits to people who hold medical marijuana cards and otherwise qualify. “We hold that the Federal Gun Control Act does not pre-empt the state’s concealed handgun licensing statute and, therefore, the sheriffs must issue (or renew) the requested licences,” Chief Justice Paul De Muniz wrote. Willis welcomed the ruling. “I feel like a big girl now,” she said. “I feel like a real human being now, not just a source of revenue to the county.” Oregon became one of the first states in the U.S. to authorize people to use marijuana to treat medical conditions when voters approved an initiative in 1998. Johnny Depp stars in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth movie in the Pirates franchise.

It’s time to jump ship Richard Crouse and Mark Breslin debate Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Mermaids are great, but not much else to write home about Richard Crouse: Mark, my main question after watching the new Pirates movie is, If this was the first one of the series would we have had a two, three and four? I don’t think so. It’s a big splashy epic, but lacks the fun and Johnny’s joie de vivre of the original. What say you, matey?

brilliant characterization in the series, but really, the tricks are starting to show their age. And I didn’t like swashbuckling even when Douglas Fairbanks did it in 1932. Still, I thought this edition of Pirates was the best since the original, whatever that means.

Mark Breslin: Richard, I wasn’t even a fan of the original. And no franchise should exceed a trilogy unless the words “godfather or “cheerleaders are in the title. An appreciation of this movie is contingent upon how you feel about Johnny Depp and how much swordplay you can handle. I adore Depp’s

RC: I don’t think this one has the spark of the others. It’s not as funny, Depp seems like he’s gone back to the Captain Jack treasure chest one too many times and the action scenes, despite the 3-D, don’t fly off the screen the way they have in the past. I liked the mermaids and think their attack se-

quence is the most exciting thing in the movie, but I may be wrong simply because the movie is so dark I may have missed something. MB: Oh, those mermaids! Who knew they spoke in a Scandinavian accent? Yes, they are the most exciting thing in the movie, although I did enjoy Ian MacShane’s villainy. But despite the fountain of youth plot device, these Pirates are getting old. And you’re right about how dark the film is: I was straining to make out which pirate was which. Quick clue: Depp is the Pirate Who’s Had A Bit Of Work Done.

RC: Ha! Perhaps playing the same character four times in eight years is too much for Depp, or perhaps the limitations of Captain Jack are becoming apparent but he’s not as entertaining as before. Not that director Rob Marshall helps him. The action sequences are as well choreographed as you might expect from the man who made Chicago and Nine, but they are also as exciting as you would expect from a man who specializes in making musicals. MB: I see what you’re getting at. For the next instalment, make it a musical complete with a chorus line of mermaids!

Cooper loves his wolfpack Hangover star says bond with co-stars is the secret ingredient for movie’s success Sequel gets darker STEVE GOW

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

Although the antics are amped up in The Hangover: Part II, star Bradley Cooper admits shooting the anticipated comedy was at least easier than the first. “There’s a certain amount of ease in knowing the character — having all this history,” said Cooper recently in Toronto. “There was a lot less preparation because the preparation was already (in doing) a movie. That’s a hell of a lot of rehearsal time to have another movie under your belt.” With the 2009 surprise hit earning a stunning $467 million US worldwide, there will be a lot of eyes

It gets darker and because of that the three of us have to go to places making it believable but you have to deal with these crazy circumstances,” Cooper said. He explained that the movie’s secret is in the camaraderie with co-stars Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms. “It’s the reason I would do seven of these movies … it was just really wonderful to see what would come out of that — things that weren’t in the script,” he said. installment in the sci-fi franchise inspired by Hasbro’s line of shape-shifting toys. Director Michael Bay showed about 15 minutes of assorted footage from his first 3-D film Wednesday as part of a discussion with filmmaker James Cameron

about the challenges and benefits of 3-D moviemaking. Though Bay was initially skeptical about the multidimensional medium (“It might be a gimmick,” he said in 2009), he said he “ended up loving it.” “It was just great to

Kung Fu Panda 2 a ‘passion project’ Sequel gets a new director who was excited to step up to the plate Crew watched kung fu movies in down time ETHAN MILLER/GETTY IMAGES

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

For anyone with a place in their hearts for kung fu movies and absurdly cute CGI animals, the release of Kung Fu Panda 2 is cause for giddy excitement. The first film was a critical success that also cleaned up at the box office in 2008 and Dreamworks Animation began work on the sequel shortly after it opened in theatres. Jennifer Yuh Nelson was key member of the creative/design team on the original Kung Fu Panda and was promoted to

director for this second outing. Speaking to Metro, the filmmaker said she was thrilled to return. “I was always ready to keep going regardless of whether I was the director or not and

a lot of the same group stayed on because everyone loved the first movie so much. It was always a passion project for everyone involved and that continued on the sequel.” Creating a CGI animated film on this scale was a huge undertaking for the director, who worked on the project for three years before it was complete. “We didn’t start seeing finish animated sequences until about a year and a half out,” admitted Nelson. “It trickles in a little at a time and it’s always a shock when you’re working with rough black and white storyboards that you’re used to and then all

of a sudden you see the same scenes in gorgeous colour animation. It’s a big jolt for the crew, because you suddenly realize what the final film will look like.” To help break up the te-

dium during the long production, Nelson said the crew would hold “kung fu movie lunches,” watching an endless list of classic titles in the genre to inspire the vast team of animators.

“We’d watch everything from Drunken Master to Kung Fu Hustle,” said the director. “That’s one of the reasons why these movies aren’t parodies. They are a homage to movies that we all really love.”

Gaga’s left leg/knee/shin area. This shows up on the dent on the “g” at the end of “unassuming” and in several other “y” characters in her handwriting sample.

The estimable Lady Gaga served as Metro’s guest editor on Tuesday and we got her to answer some of our questions in her own handwriting. Which, of course, raises the question: What does Lady Gaga’s penmanship say about her? Metro consulted Dennis Duez, a Pittsburgh-based handwriting analyst who has scrutinized the writings of Britney Spears (she’s very obstinate) and former New York Gov. In the early days of film and television, variety was king. Elvis had starring roles, the Rat Pack all sang in their movies and while Jackie Gleason had one of the highest-rated shows on TV as a bus driver with a comically short fuse, he was also releasing albums of romantic mood music. But as the modern entertainment industry evolved, the public gradually became less accepting of stars who established themselves in one medi-

Sandler mastered the funny-guy-with-the-guitar thing on Saturday Night Live, and some of the songs on his first two comedy albums were absurd enough to make your stomach hurt. Eddie Murphy

After tucking funny songs between comedy tracks on his albums, Murphy decided to take music seriously. His Rick James-produced anthem, Party All the Time, went to No. 2 on the charts in 1985. Most of his follow-up singing work was met with less enthusi-

SOUND CHECK

ALAN CROSS SCENE @METRONEWS.CA

Today is one of my favourite days of the entire year: the Friday leading into the first summer long weekend. After a cold winter and a cool, and for many, disastrously wet spring, Canadians are possessed by hopeful optimism about what the next four months will bring. This means it’s also time to load up on some new music.

Ben Harper/Give Till It’s Gone (out now): Most of Ben’s best records have been released in either the spring or summer, making them great soundtracks for heading camping or laying out on the beach. His10th studio album, which again features his band, The Relentless 7-fits, that bill. And yes, that’s Jackson Browne making a guest appearance. Moby/Destroyed (out now): Electronica’s favourite bald vegan returns with an album written mostly in hotel rooms in the middle of the night. A chronic insomniac, Moby captures both the peace and loneliness one

feels at 3 in the morning in a strange city. Listening to this album in the daytime doesn’t feel quite right, but in the middle of the night, it makes all the sense in the world. Eddie Vedder/Ukulele Songs (out May 31): When you’re one of the most famous singers in the world, you can do whatever you want, including recording a solo album where you play the ukulele. Rumour has it that Eddie originally planned this project as gift to friends and family, but it turned out so well that it’s getting a proper release. Haunting yet very, very pretty.

Is it time for fans to start worrying about 30 Rock? Actor Judah Friedlander doesn’t think the popular show is done yet and I believe she’s having the baby around the time we normally start filming for the new season, so our start time is actually being delayed some,” he continued. “We’re going to start filming later than normal, so because of that our show has to air later than normal. So to my knowledge that’s what that’s all about.” Despite critical praise and a slew of awards, 30 Rock has failed to attract blockbuster ratings and its future has frequently been in doubt. With star Alec Baldwin’s contract set to expire in 2012, and with the recent Season 6 postponement, fans have recently been

more concerned than usual. The Atlantic Wire also recently published an article questioning the future of the show, opening with the sentence: “Is it time to start worrying about 30 Rock?” However, Friedlander is confident they’ll be back. “We are guaranteed for

at least one more season and after that we don’t know yet,” he said. During the 30 Rock hiatus, Friedlander will be busy with his World Champion standup tour. The title for Friedlander’s tour, as his fans well know, stems from his eccentric public persona as a standup comedian. With a bushy beard and long locks, thick glasses, and T-shirts and trucker hats emblazoned with his World Champion slogan (sometimes in other languages and even in braille), the jokester boasts onstage and in interviews that he’s an undefeated master of martial arts, among many other things. Judah Friedlander says the recent postponement of Season 6 of 30 Rock isn’t anything to worry about. The actor, who plays trucker hat-loving Frank Rossitano on the acclaimed TV comedy series, says NBC was sincere earlier this week when it cited Tina Fey’s pregnancy as the reason it’s pushing the Season 6 debut to next January. “Here’s what’s going on, to my knowledge: Tina Fey is pregnant, not by (co-star) Tracy Morgan and not by me, as far as I can remember,” Friedlander, 42, wisecracked in a recent phone interview to promote his standup show at Toronto’s Second City on Thursday. “Now, the thing is, Tina Fey is having a baby soon

Kick off backyard barbecue season

This juicy Chipotle Barbecue Cheeseburger has condiments built right in Not only is it Victoria Day Weekend, it’s National Hamburger Month THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/ MATTHEW MEAD

Ingredients:

Makes: 4 Start to finish: 30 mins

• 50 ml (1/4 cup) mayonnaise • 15 ml (1 tbsp) mustard powder • 15 ml (1 tbsp) honey • 5 ml (1 tsp) cider vinegar • 1 red bell pepper, cored and thinly sliced • 1 green bell pepper, cored and thinly sliced • 1 yellow bell pepper, cored and thinly sliced • Salt and ground black pepper

• 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce • 50 ml (1/4 cup) prepared barbecue sauce • 2 cloves garlic • 500 g (1 lb) 85 per cent lean ground beef • 250 ml (1 cup) shredded cheddar cheese • 50 ml (1/4 cup) finely chopped black olives • 4 large potato buns, toasted • 1 large tomato, thickly sliced

Preparation:

1 To increase the heat in this recipe, add a jalapeno to the processor at the same time as the chipotles.

No condiments are needed for this high-flavour barbecue-style cheeseburger; they are built right in. For ease — and let’s face it, awesome taste — I took your basic beef burger and mixed in puréed chipotles in adobo sauce, a healthy

splash of barbecue sauce and some garlic. But why stop there? I also stuffed the burger with a mix of cheddar cheese and chopped black olives. To round it out, I mixed a simple bell pepper slaw to form a creamy-crispy

In bowl, whisk mayo, mustard powder, honey and vinegar. Add all 3 peppers, toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper, then set aside. Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high. In food processor, combine chipotle peppers, barbecue sauce and garlic. Puree until smooth. Transfer to bowl. Add ground beef, 2 ml (1/2 tsp) salt and 1 ml (1/4 tsp) black pepper, mix.

Divide ground beef mixture into quarters. One at a time, form each quarter into a cup in the palm of your hand. Add 50 ml (1/4 cup) of the cheese and a sprinkling of the black olives to the centre of each cup, then push beef over it to completely cover cheese. Carefully form beef into a patty.

I’m a bit of a barbecue weenie. At my house, boy meets grill until mid-fall. Then I wheel my gasfired girl into the garage until Victoria Day. She’s ready to make her 2011 debut this long weekend, and when it comes to picking a wine to match grilled meats, I look for juice that can hold its own against the intensity of the meat, the influence of the marinade and, since I’m a bit of a hamburger aficionado, any condiments I decide to lather on when meat hits bun. Think young, jammy and red. It’s not time to uncork that Bordeaux you’ve had since midway through the last century. Best bets are Californian zinfandel and merlot, Aussie shiraz, Chilean cabernet sauvignon, and for a taste of the Old World, a Barbera d’Asti from Italy’s Piedmont region. In Argentina, barbecue is a way of life and a red like Trapiche’s 2010 Varietals Malbec ($9.00 $11.99) — with dark, blueberry flavour, balanced tannins and spice trail — is a grill match made in Mendoza. Dartmouth runners eager for Blue Nose test MATTHEW WUEST

When Johnny MacPherson helped found Dartmouth’s Heart and Sole running club a few months ago, staying fit suddenly became interesting. “I used to hate running,” says MacPherson, a 39-yearold father of two. “I found it boring, but now I crave it.” MacPherson picked up running about a year ago in the hopes of getting healthier. Since having his two children, four-year-old Rowan and two-year-old Carrington, MacPherson — a former rugby player and

A diabetes diagnosis was further impetus to change his ways. “You get into your profession, you’re at a desk most of the day, and then kids come along,” says MacPherson, an urban planner who works for the city. “At some point you have to say, ‘This isn’t working. I need to give myself a kick

in the butt.’” When MacPherson, Michelle Kempton and several other friends formed Heart and Sole in February, he became confident the lifestyle change would be permanent. The group, which is free to join and has grown to 230 members, puts runners into comfortable training groups and provides weekly, pre-planned routes of varying distances.

“The club is really the glue that holds my training together and has now become a pretty good social networking opportunity,” says MacPherson, whose wife Deidre is also a Heart and Sole member. “We’ve met some pretty good friends here.” MacPherson, who is running the half-marathon on Sunday, says he expects 60 of Heart and Sole’s members to participate in the Blue Nose, including many first-timers. “We’re excited,” he says. “There’s nervous excitement, but they can’t wait to test themselves in an actual race. People are really looking forward to Sunday.”

J.P. Arencibia hit a two-run homer Thursday to snap a 1-1 tie in the seventh as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2. Juan Rivera also homered for the Jays (22-21). Toronto starter Ricky Romero allowed three hits over seven innings for the win.

At the training camp for Germany’s national women’s football team in Bitburg, not far from the Luxembourg border, there’s a photographer trying to get a shot of the queen of European soccer. Birgit Prinz isn’t playing along. The 33-year-old striker, the most prolific player in FIFA Women’s World Cup history, lets her teammates pose and waits until the circus is over before emerging from the clubhouse. “For me it’s never been about personal goals,”

CHRISTOF KOEPSEL/BONGARTS/GETTY IMAGES

Prinz remarks. “It’s always been about being part of this team.” Her English is remarkable given that she rarely encounters an interview in anything other than her mother tongue. Such is the modest nature of acclaim granted to arguably the greatest women’s soccer player in the annals of the game. Prinz, you see, is approaching her fifth World Cup. She has been the champion twice and holds the record for goals scored in World Cup matches with 14. She has played at four Olympics and won the bronze medal three times. For good measure, add three consecutive years as FIFA World Player of the Year from 2003-05 and 208 international matches in 16 years as the German stalwart.

Birgit Prinz

Prinz has done it all. Now she gets to compete in a World Cup at home and take her place as a much appreciated legend in a football-mad nation. “I never had female role models when I was first playing this sport,” Prinz admits. “I looked up to the guys who played in the Bundesliga. They were my role models. Girls need role models, too. If I am one now, then that makes me happy.” A practising physiotherapist and student of

psychology who has been vocal in promoting the humanitarian aims of FIFA, Prinz has achieved all her goals and then some. Just ask former teammate Stefi Jones, the president and CEO of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 organizing committee. “Birgit is my hero,” says Jones. “She’s not as fast as she once was and doesn’t score as much. She just makes everyone around her better.” That’s what heroes do, and make no mistake, Prinz is football royalty. She is the undisputed queen of football in this country and probably throughout the world. When she plays against Canada to open the World Cup at Olympic Stadium in Berlin before 70,000 fans, Prinz will finally receive the undivided attention of her loyal subjects.
