Tunnel decision delayed again

City administration and airport authority met over the weekend and yesterday morning to discuss the city’s offer Mayor Naheed Nenshi postponed a flight to China yesterday KATIE TURNER

A quarter-century celebration

Soggy conditions couldn’t stop dozens of kids and their chaperones from heading to Olympic Plaza yesterday for the opening of the 25th annual Calgary International Children’s Festival. Numerous booths and performances will take place onsite this week. For more information, visit calgarychildfest.org.

Despite a council-imposed deadline of 5 p.m. yesterday, the airport authority is asking for more time to respond to the city’s airport tunnel proposal. On Friday, council approved one final offer to present to the airport authority, which outlined building a portion of the tunnel, but it would not connect to Stoney Trail until external funding is secured to build the interchanges. The airport authority, however, did not respond with a yay or nay by the 5 p.m. deadline. “We met with the city this morning (Tuesday) to clarify their proposal and what we’ll do is consider the proposal and get back to them as soon as we can,” said airport authority spokesperson Jody Moseley. “We’ll be considering it this week.”

When asked if there was a specific date and time the authority would respond, Moseley repeated, “We’ll be looking at it and considering it this week.” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said there will be no more back and forth between the city and the authority. “As per council’s direction last week, negotiations have now closed — we’re done,” he said. “The airport authority is now going through their approval processes and their confirmation processes to see if this is something they want to do.” When asked whether he believes the Calgary Airport Authority board needs to be re-evaluated, Nenshi chose not to address the question. “That’s not really a question for today. The question for today has to do with this tunnel and it has nothing to do with long-term governance.”

Tunnel budget Approved Council initially approved the $295 million to build the tunnel February. Nenshi On March 21, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said, “We’re probably within, roughly, a six- to seven-week time frame to finalize a deal.” Deadline In April, the city and the authority agreed to a May 15 deadline. Closed A portion of Barlow Trail was closed permanently on April 4 to allow for the new runway construction. Cost The total cost of the revised tunnel deal is approximately $345 million. Deal The sticking point of the deal is believed to be proposed interchanges.

Hiker’s body recovered, say Canmore police Canmore RCMP say they have found the body of an avid hiker reported missing earlier this month. Raphael Gagne, 32, was last seen May 13. RCMP say circumstances surrounding his death are not suspicious. Elsewhere, a Calgary biker reported missing last week has been found alive and well in Ponoka. Scott Chunn, 25, had originally headed to Edmonton to see some concerts. When he didn’t return home early last week, his parents became worried. RCMP say Chunn simply extended his trip without informing his family. METRO

Calgary-area parents and students alike were given reason to celebrate yesterday as the province announced a broad plan to add schools to smaller Alberta communities. Specifically, Airdrie will see two public schools built, along with a third that will be used by the Greater Southern Public

Francophone Education Region. Chestermere and Cochrane will also each see one new school added to their community. Premier Ed Stelmach said plans are to get construction underway as soon as possible. “We have to keep up with infrastructure, this is absolutely necessary,” he said. “This will create 3,500 new spaces and we know we are critically

short.” Critically short doesn’t begin to describe it, said Airdrie mother Rhonda Bollum. Her two kids are nearly through their time in the city’s public system and have had to endure crowded hallways and classrooms as well as a lack of teacher-student interaction. “They should be built already, really,” she said. “This is long overdue.” Yesterday’s announce-

New technology may help open cold cases helping with future cases, the new system will also open the door to cold cases dating back even earlier than 1986, when the old fingerprinting system was put in place. “What it allows us to do is probably identify more criminals now than we were able to with the old system.” He said there are 22,000 unsolved cases in Calgary, Edmonton and Regina and 188 of those files have been run through the new system. Thus far, 50 people have been identified in relation to those unsolved cases. KATIE TURNER

Crime scene fingerprints just got a little clearer for the Calgary Police Service. The CPS, along with the Edmonton Police Service and the Regina Police Service, is now utilizing a new Automated Fingerprint Identification System, which will enhance the identification network in Western Canada. “It’s got double the resolution so what we’re finding with that is we’re making a lot more criminal identifications than we had with the old system,” said CPS acting Staff Sgt. Brian Rayner. Rayner said along with

Fans bid Oprah farewell Queen of daytime television’s reign ends today with final show ‘Idol’ played important role in lives of some Calgarians JEREMY NOLAIS

@METRONEWS.CA

Lisa Dewar still fondly recalls her first encounter with Oprah Winfrey. Selected as one of the entertainment icon’s “ultimate fans,” the Calgary author was whisked away in December to spend a week Down Under with Winfrey and a select group of her other followers. Dewar said the humidity in Australia wreaked havoc on her hair from the

moment she landed. When it came time to meet Winfrey face-to-face, Dewar decided to come clean and said, “I always dreamt I would get this chance to meet you, I never thought my hair would look like this at the time.” To which Winfrey replied, “You know what, that’s why my hair’s in a ponytail right now.” Dewar said that story gives clear proof that Winfrey’s personality is both “genuine” and “real.” Today, and with mixed emo-

tions, she will tune in with millions of others for the final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The show itself has also played an important role in the life of fellow Calgarian Trina Marr, who announced she was divorcing her husband in front of Winfrey and a national TV audience a little more than six year ago. Marr, who has appeared on the show three times total, said it will be missed, before adding, “Oprah changed my life ... thank

Oprah influence With today’s finale, The Oprah Winfrey Show will have aired 4,561 episodes over 25 seasons. Calgary’s Lisa Dewar says she has missed “very few” over that time. Fellow local resident Trina Marr said sales of her product, known as Hair Flairs, skyrocketed 2,000 per cent after appearing on Oprah’s show.

There will be no more bus tours to the fire-ravaged community of Slave Lake, officials announced yesterday. An Alberta government spokeswoman says town and municipal district officials arrived at the decision because “the tours were successful and those who were interested have been accommodated. The Town of Slave Lake and the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River organized bus tours of the community on Monday and yesterday so that evacuees could get a look at the destruction of their homes from forest fires more than a week ago. The first bus yesterday left from the Athabasca reception centre at 8:30 a.m. Another bus picked up residents from Concordia University in Edmonton at 9 a.m., while residents in Westlock made their way to Slave Lake at about 2 p.m. The province has extended the evacuation order for the town to Saturday, saying it remains unsafe for people to return until hot spots are extinguished and every property has been inspected for possible gas leaks and other damage. Alberta Health and Wellness has announced it will spend $14 million over the next three years to raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections in our province. “We have a very serious health issue in Alberta,” said Gene Zwozdesky, minister of health and wellness. “Alberta has the highest rates of STIs in the country and that is simply unacceptable.” The five-year plan to reU OF C

Boredom can be beneficial, prof says University of Calgary Greek and Roman studies Prof. Peter Toohey says that boredom is not all bad, and he even credits it for some of history’s greatest ideas.

The campaign will feature TV ads, posters in bars and nightclubs, as well as online links to treatment and counselling. “If you’re feeling bored, you shouldn’t think it’s crazy or silly,” Toohey said. “It’s a proper reaction to circumstances that can be harmful and you need to remedy them.” The professor, who studies boredom as an art stimulus, warns if boredom is left unrelieved it can lead to anger and depression, so it is best to do something about it when it occurs. As chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis rates have gone up, the campaign will urge Albertans to protect themselves. The strategy aims to decrease the number of HIV and hepatitis C cases as well. “We have in Alberta people who are engaging in high-risk behaviours, and we need to get the message to them,” said Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Andre Corriveau. Compromises pledged Israeli PM receives ovations days after his dustup with Barack Obama Borders Israel, which enjoys strong bipartisan backing in U.S. Congress, has been rattled by President Barack Obama’s support for drawing the future borders of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state on the basis of Israel’s pre-1967 war frontiers. Benjamin Netanyahu has challenged Obama’s position repeatedly, ignoring Obama’s assertion that the territorial markers could be adjusted through agreed land swaps. The Palestinians accept that principle. In his speech before Congress, Netanyahu backed off from his dispute with Obama.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged yesterday to make “painful compromises” for peace with the Palestinians, for the first time explicitly saying that some West Bank settlements would find themselves outside Israel’s final borders. He also tacked on a list of often-stated conditions that have been unacceptable to the Palestinians.

‘Declaration of war’ Palestinian officials said the Israeli prime minister’s parameters for a peace deal fell far short

Speaking before a warmly receptive joint meeting of the U.S. Congress, Netanyahu said Israel wants and needs peace. But he repeated his flat rejection of a return to what he called the “indefensible” borders that Israel had before the 1967 Middle East war. He also restated Israel’s refusal to repatriate milof what is needed to resume negotiations. Nabil Shaath, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on keeping

lions of Palestinian refugees and their families to homes in Israel that they lost in fighting over the Jewish state’s 1948 creation. Netanyahu also maintained anew that contested Jerusalem could not be shared with the Palestinians, who want the eastern sector of the holy city as capital of their hoped-for state. Frantic search for twister survivors MARIO TAMA/GETTY IMAGES

The massive tornado that tore through Joplin, Mo., is now officially the deadliest single twister in the U.S. in nearly six decades with a death toll of at least 122. City manager Mark Rohr said yesterday that more than 750 people were injured. Nine people also have been recovered

from debris. Crews, taking advantage of the best weather they have had in two days, busted holes in concrete slabs and sifted through strewn home goods yesterday as rescuers focused on crumpled megastores and apartment complexes in a frantic search for more survivors.

Zane Sexton pauses with his girlfriend Buffie Wescoat while salvaging items from Sexton’s home yesterday, which was destroyed when a tornado passed through Joplin, Mo.

One team poked through the remains of a home improvement store, while others searched a Wal-Mart and wrecked apartments as the clock ticked down on another round of severe storms. A hunt through the rubble using search-andrescue dogs was planned, and officials expected to

test the city’s nine warning sirens while the sun was still shining. The Storm Prediction Center warned of severe weather starting yesterday afternoon in the central U.S. Meteorologist David Imy said conditions were ripe for more tornadoes. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The pancake batfish, found in the Gulf of Mexico prior to last year’s oil spill, seems to hobble along the seabed on thick arm-like fins.

The leech, which has earned the name Tyrannobdella rex (meaning (“tyrant leech king”) is very much like that famous toothy meateating dinosaur. Curiously, it was discovered in the nostril of a nine-yearold girl in Peru.

Tiny mushrooms in the forests of Brazil were discovered with “gelcoated stems that glow constantly, emitting a bright yellowish-green light,” said the scientists.

Other newly-found species include a new West African antelope found at a bushmeat market, an orb-weaving spider whose silk is twice as strong as ordinary spider thread and a cockroach that jumps like a grasshopper.

Erupting Iceland volcano grounds flights — again But no mishap as defiant budget airline takes off SCOTT HEPPELL/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ash spewing from an Icelandic volcano is bringing disruption and uncertainty to European air travel. Despite claims of a massive over-reaction, hundreds of flights were cancelled yesterday as winds blew the cloud of ash from the Grimsvotn volcano over Scotland and other parts of Europe. Experts say particles in the ash could stall jet engines. Officials in Germany said dozens of flights would be grounded today. The only comfort for frustrated passengers and airlines is that officials in Iceland said the amount of ash being released by the volcano was decreasing.

A traveller waits for a flight at Edinburgh airport.

The officials don’t expect the disruption to be as bad as last year’s, when millions were stranded after the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Travellers trying to go to or leave Scotland have

been hit hardest. In Sweden, 10 domestic flights were cancelled last night. Although British authorities said concentrations of ash in the skies over Scotland were too high to fly through, Irish budget airline Ryanair challenged the results, saying it had sent its own airplane into Scottish airspace and found no ash in the atmosphere. “We encountered absolutely no problems,” said Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary. “There’s no cloud over Scotland. There’s no dusting of ash on the airframe or the wings.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Canada has imposed economic sanctions against Syria in response to the Mideast country’s violent suppression of anti-government protesters. Battle of e-readers heats up Nook’s $139 price tag a sign Barnes and Noble aiming to compete with Amazon’s Kindle and Kobo from Borders Group

The lighter, slimmer, cheaper new version of Barnes and Noble’s e-reader has a black-and-white touch screen and aims squarely at the “grandma” demographic — or at least those craving a simpler ebook reader. The focus on simplicity means the new Nook’s battery can last two months, CEO William Lynch said at an event in New York to announce the device. for a grandma. The new Nook, to be available June 10, is Wi-Fi only, has a six-inch touch screen and can hold up to 1,000 digital books. It features the latest E Ink technology, which significantly minimizes flashing that can occur as a user pages through an e-book. Pages seem to melt into each other on the new Nook. Barnes and Noble Inc. executives said the new device lets readers look up words, highlight passages,

search and adjust font size. It weighs 7.5 ounces, 35 per cent less than the first Nook, which launched a year and a half ago. The iPad 2 weighs more than 1.3 pounds. The newest Kindle is almost as light, at 8.5 ounces, but holds more than three times as many books as the new Nook. Amazon, meanwhile, dropped the price of its Kindle last month by $25 US to $114. Then, as Saturday dawned on Business as Usual, Camping compounded his cuckoo quotient by claiming it was a mathematical error and the real end of the world is still coming Oct. 21. Those people who sold all their worldly possessions to prepare for Apocalypse Now are stuck and will have to make it until Oct. 21 with just the clothes on their backs until they are saved, or taken up, or whatever. Camping tried this trick before in 1994 and it didn’t work then either. Same problem — mathematical error. Camping may be one heck of a preacher, but he should “(Harold) consider remedial math. Still, it’s hard to blame Camping tried Camping. He’s a fire and this trick before brimstone evangelist who in 1994 and it predicts the end of the didn’t work then world. It comes with the job description. When either. Same you’re a hammer, problem — everything looks like a nail. When you’re a doomsayer, mathematical everything looks like doom. error. Camping And we in the media are may be one heck complicit, promoting of a preacher, Camping’s Grand Delusion with unseemly glee, but he should lending credence to an old consider man’s lunatic ravings. remedial math.” As a story, it’s been just too much fun to pass up. And I’m sure I wasn’t alone as I opened my eyes Saturday morning and looked around with just a touch of smug relief. Still here. Cautionary note: Just because it’s a bunch of baloney doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. Stars explode every day; asteroids plow into planets. And come Oct. 21, we could be the victims of a cataclysmic coincidence, and there is Camping saying “I told you so” as he gets taken up. “Next time, you’ll listen. Oops, my bad. There is no next time.” The truth is (and I can’t believe I need to say this) whatever does or does not happen to the world Oct. 21 will have nothing to do with some old guy from Oakland. There are 170-billion galaxies in the known universe and each galaxy has between 200-billion and 400-billion stars. It’s more than a little difficult to believe that God will point a big old finger at the tiny third planet circling around one of those 400-billion stars and say “That’s it, folks. Rapture time!” She is simply too busy to correct Harold Camping’s bad math. Hallelujah, I say.

Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning ASUNCION, Paraguay. The Asuncion zoo is desperately seeking a mate for Coco, the last known male of his species left in Paraguay. Coco is an endangered hyacinth macaw, known in Paraguayan Spanish as a “papagayo azul.” Scientists estimated several years ago that only 6,500 were left in the wild, mostly in an area of neighbouring Brazil that is quickly losing natural habitat for the birds. Capturing and exporting the Macaws is illegal and Coco was sent to the zoo eight years ago after authorities broke up a gang of animal traffickers. Only recently did a DNA test show he is male, zoo veterinarian Cristiane Rainner said. To avoid mixing species, the zoo has had to keep him apart from other Macaws, which has left him lonely and a bit bored, Rainner said. “He’s quite sociable, although he’s only learned to say ‘hello.’ But when he hears the cumbia he dances,” Rainner said. “The hyacinth macaw is a beauty, but if it doesn’t reproduce, that’ll be it. Coco is a male and his life expectancy is 80 years.”

Stealth chopper at night is optional The official tourist map for Abbottabad, Pakistan, urges visitors to discover its “hidden” treasures. Some think that should include a peek behind the infamous walls of Osama bin Laden’s compound. It makes sense to the deputy head of the tourism office. The threestorey villa is known around the world. Abbottabad is already popular as an alpine escape from the summer

heat. And a museum at the last stand of the al-Qaida leader could mine some long-term cash from the town’s instant brush with notoriety. It’s not a universal view by any stretch. Many want to demolish the building to try to recapture Abbottabad’s ambiance as a quiet corner in a chaotic country. But those contemplating some way to profit from the May 2 raid that killed bin Laden seem to know there is a well-established market for infamy. The Tower of London — and its sometimes role as a prison and execution hall — is one of the city’s main tourist draws. Tours abound for everything from Hollywood tragedies to the trail of the Boston Strangler. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The highs and lows of O Oprah Winfrey’s last show airs today so what better time to look back at her TV career And it was good… Super-Oprah comes into the world on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah gets her start, meets Gayle After three years of anchor news reporting, in 1976, Winfrey hosts the six o’clock news at Baltimore’s WJZ-TV, where she meets future bestie-for-life, Gayle King, who was working there as a production assistant.

Forming an empire and defending free speech In 1998, Winfrey forms Oxygen Media, which would spawn the Oxygen cable channel. In the same year, she wins a “food disparagement” case against Texas cattlemen after her comments in a 1996 episode about Mad Cow Disease. Let the lifestyling begin Winfrey expands her reach with O Magazine, which offers advice on personal finance, fitness and spiritual wellness.

The Color Purple Winfrey stars as Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple in 1985 and scores a Best Supporting Actress nod by the Academy Awards.

Paging Dr. Phil Winfrey may be leaving but her self-help posse remains: Dr. Phil debuted in 2002, Rachael Ray in 2006, The Dr. Oz Show in 2009 and The Nate Berkus Show just last year.

The big break Since her move to Chicago in 1983, Winfrey was hosting localized version of what was to become The Oprah Winfrey Show, which first nationally broadcast on September 8th, 1986.

“You get a car!” On September 12, 2004, Winfrey shocked the audience: Each one of those lucky, well-deserving, loyal jerks got a Pontiac G6 — 276 in all.In November 2010, she gave away VW Beetles.

The Emmys In 1987, Winfrey receives her first of more than 45 Daytime Emmy Awards that she would collect before removing the show from consideration in 2000.

Tom Cruise gets excited talking about Katie Holmes Remember May 23, 2005? According to the Urban Dictionary “jump the couch” is “a defining moment when you know someone has gone off the deep end.”

The weight struggles Winfrey starts what would become a 20-plus year public discussion about her weight fluctuation with the Diet Dreams Come True episode of November 15, 1988, in which she is a slim size 10.

Opens school in South Africa The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls debuts in January 2, 2007, lauded by humanitarians, and nearly overshadowed when a female employee is later accused of molestation.

The engagement that would last a lifetime In 1992, Oprah Winfrey gets engaged to businessman Stedman Graham — whom she has yet to actually marry.

Denies being gay After years of dogged rumours about her sexuality, and questions about her relationship with friend Gayle King, Winfrey opens up to Barbara Walters in December 2010. “I’m not lesbian. I’m not even kind of lesbian,” she said, soon tearing up while praising King. “She is … the mother I never had. She is … the sister everybody would want.”

The Queen of Daytime and the King of Pop In 1993, it was only Winfrey who could get the pale Michael Jackson to explain that he had not bleached his skin, but that he had skin-pigment disorder known as vitiligo. This was to become one of her highest rated episodes, with 62 million viewers watching. The Oprah Book Club Oprah Winfrey launches her book club in 1996. More than 60 selections have instantaneously earned a lucky author boatloads of money and an immediate spot on the New York Times’ Best Seller List.

Maria Shriver was reportedly so enraged after learning about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s illegitimate child that she instructed her team to leak word of it to the press, according to TMZ. And apparently Shriver initially wanted to hold a press conference to unveil the scandal, but, “Maria’s friends talked her off a ledge and a plan was eventually hatched to leak the details to the L.A. Times and TMZ,” a source says. Shriver reportedly didn’t learn about the full extent of her husband’s indiscretions until late April or early May, days before the news went public. Schwarzenegger has been keeping a low profile since the news went public. METRO

Gaga’s Judas a non-biblical revelation Zach Galifianakis

Zach’s acid tongue January Jones may have called Zach Galifianakis the funniest man she’s ever met, but as Galifianakis tells it, she wasn’t quite as friendly during their first meeting. “I sit at her table and talk for 10 minutes, and she goes, ‘I think it’s time

Fact, fiction and fun are melded together in a new exhibit in Montreal’s Old Port which celebrates intrepid archeologist Indiana Jones 30 years after he burst onto the big screen with feats of daring and the crack of a bullwhip. Visitors to Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology at the Montreal Science Centre are welcomed by a bilingual message from no less than Harrison Ford, who brought Indy to life in the movies beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Jones’ fabled leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip are among the first things people see when they walk into the show which has enough props and real relics to tickle the most diehard fan. “We’re using the character of Indiana Jones as an invitation to discover what the world of archeology is today as well as what the world of archeology was in the past,” said Genevieve

The original Raiders remains one of the top-grossing films of all time and was followed by three sequels and a TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. There have also been comic books and video games with the character. Angio-Morneau, a designer and museologist with Montreal’s X3 Productions, says the idea for the show came from Lucasfilm when it saw the success of Indiana Jones and the King-

dom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. “Lucasfilm realized that there was a lot of attention and that he was still very famous, a well-loved character,” she said. “Lucasfilm has all these amazing objects in their archives so I guess they quickly put one and one together and said it’s time to let these objects leave the archives and have them tour the world.” The Hollywood filmmakers found kindred spirits in X3 Productions for the show, which comes as the

Universal Orlando is revamping its popular The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride by adding 3-D animation.

will be updated with the highest-quality HD resolution available, special effects and new details in the film, which is projected onto a towering screen. The cars hurtle riders along ravaged city streets as Spider-Man battles his archenemies, protecting innocent citizens from the likes of Doc Ock and Electro.

“A big part of it is bringing it to a point where the imaging, the characters, the animation, the clarity, the details will be at a point where it’s larger than life, said Thierry Coup, senior vice-president of Universal Creative. “You’ll feel even more like you’re in that world. Universal hasn’t yet announced closing and re-

opening dates for the Spider-Man ride, which debuted in 1999 in the Islands of Adventure park. The animated film Despicable Me, which came out last year with Steve Carell voicing Gru, grossed more than $540 million US worldwide. Like the movie, the Universal ride will feature Gru, his three adopted daughters and, of course, the minions. Universal says riders will be transformed into minions before embarking on the 3-D adventure and get to participate in a minion “dance party at the end of the ride. “In the same way comedy and sweetness and emotion were critical parts of the film, they will also become very essential parts of the experience in the ride, said Chris Meledandri, who produced the film and is involved in creating the ride. France’s hidden jewel

METRO WORLD NEWS

There are many beautiful towns and villages in France, and they are all worth visiting, but few are as standout-spectacular as the town of Troyes. The streets of beautifully preserved timbered medieval buildings in the town’s historical centre

make it a very special place to visit. Set in the heart of the Champagne region, the centre of Troyes (pronounced “trois,” like the French word for three), is actually shaped like a champagne cork. The magnificent architecture dates back to 1524 when 500 houses were built by wealthy mer-

chants after a fire had burned down most of the city. Those houses, with their timbered fronts, have been lovingly restored and it’s a pleasure to stroll down the cobbled pedestrian streets. Pick up one of the many guides in the tourist office at 16 rue Carnot, and follow a route through the

town so you catch all the highlights. Check out the historical tool museum, and if the exhibits don’t sound appealing, stop by just for a walk round the beautiful interior courtyard garden, which showcases useful and beautifully scented herbs. There’s also the

Gothic cathedral St Pierre et St Paul, which boasts 1,500 square metres of stained glass dating from the

Tucked down the picturesque alleys are lots of little shops, as well as restaurants and bars, with terraces outside. There’s also a manicured park to laze in and a busy main square packed with bars with terraces, the perfect pitch for people-watching with a glass of wine. In the evening, the pavements outside restaurants are lined with tables for al fresco dining. Gourmet adventurers beware: the local specialty, Andouillette de Troyes, is a sausage filled with smoked tripe, and smells a bit like halitosis. It’s not for the faint-hearted. When you’ve had your fill of culture, give yourself a shopping hit without depleting your wallet: Troyes is at the heart of France’s textile industry and it’s where the big brands have their outlet stores.

SUPREME SWITCHES WORKPLACE LAW DANIEL LUBLIN DAN@CANADA EMPLOYMENTLAWYER.COM TWITTER: @DANLUBLIN

Two recent cases define the current state of workplace law in Canada above all others. Both cases have made a drastic impact, and both are often misunderstood. When the Supreme Court mostly erased the substantial damages a lower court awarded to Kevin Keays, an assembly line worker at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ont., employers in Canada collectively sighed in relief. According to the court, employers would no longer be responsible

metronews.ca

work & education

for “bad faith” damages based on how they treat their employees. Instead, it declared that employees could sue for mistreatment only if they could prove they actually suffered from harm. Most corporate lawyers leapt on the bandwagon and pronounced bad faith damages all but dead. An employee could be mistreated, they routinely argued, but without evidence of a medical illness, damages would be much more difficult to achieve. That is wrong. In the three years since the Supreme Court released its decision in Keays, lower courts have not applied it consistently and sometimes not at all. In one recent appellate case, the court upheld a bad faith damage award, as if the Supreme Court’s decision had never been rendered at all. While the law may have changed, it is possibly only in the

name. Similarly, when the Supreme Court ordered Donald Evans to return to work after his employer had already fired him, employers in this country felt they had gone from strength to strength. Employees have a duty to “mitigate” their losses following dismissal and, according to the Supreme Court, this duty includes taking a job with the company that has just fired them. Cognizant of the problems this finding could cause, the court thankfully made several exceptions. If returning to work was humiliating, for example, employees could refuse to return. Since then, companies have routinely relied on this decision in an effort to deny wrongful dismissal claims. DANIEL LUBLIN IS AN EMPLOYMENT LAWYER WITH WHITTEN & LUBLIN LLP. The serious side of social media Employment lawyers predict that cases of dismissal involving Twitter and Facebook will become common ISTOCK

Those in the public eye aren’t the only ones who should watch what they tweet. Lawyers warn it probably won’t be long before an unknown Internet user inadvertently becomes a case study in how not to use social media. Lawyers caution that there are real risks in sharing potentially controversial opinions or statements with the world via Twitter, or even in a private network on Facebook. But they can’t say exactly what kind of statements constitute crossing the line, because Canadian courts haven’t weighed in on the issue — yet. Toronto employment CORRECTION: Please note that on May 16, Teresa Kruze’s Turning Point column featured a sidebar that, due to a publication error, was missing the following step: “Put steaks off to the side with no heat.” This step should have appeared after, “Sear one minute each side with the lid open.”

Could a click of the mouse mean the end of your career?

lawyer Stacey Ball isn’t hearing about many claims of wrongful dismissal associated with social media posts gone wrong, but he expects that will change eventually. “It does happen but you don’t see a lot of it, it’s sort of a very recent phenomenon,” says Ball, who is also the author of the industry tome Canadian Employment Law. “But you’re going to see more of this.” Under Canadian law, a non-unionized employee can be fired at any time, for any reason provided they’re given adequate notice or pay in lieu. But an oft-cited

1967 Ontario Court of Appeal ruling provides grounds for an employer to terminate without compensation. “If an employee has been guilty of serious misconduct, habitual neglect of duty, incompetence, or conduct incompatible with his duties, or prejudicial to the employer’s business, or if he has been guilty of wilful disobedience to the employer’s orders in a matter of substance, the law recognizes the employer’s right summarily to dismiss the delinquent employee,” reads the decision. Bosses, don’t beat around the bush STUDENT VOICE HEATHER BELLINGHAM TALENTEGG.CA

I was always that kid who knew exactly what she wanted to do: Work behind the camera in the film and television industry. I attended Humber College’s Film and Television Production program and graduated with honours. We were warned repeatedly that we were going to be working for free for at least two or three years. I was abWhere Heather is now

solutely prepared to be underemployed. What I was not prepared for was the treatment I would receive. I learned that I had to grow a thick skin, very quickly. I interned at several companies that absolutely guaranteed I would get a job after six months, only to later discover that they had no intention of hiring me. Once I inquired about this “job offer,” they would let me go and look for a new, unpaid intern. When I did manage to get a paying job, which was rare, it was usually an “honorarium,” so I was paid significantly under minimum ough. It was, by far, one of the better decisions I have made, and I will forever be grateful for the experiences I had there. I now have a wider variety of qualifications, and I’m better prepared for the potential pitfalls of job searching.

many of these were shortlived contract positions. This is in addition to the significant number of job interviews I attended. Without going into detail, I will say that there are

a lot of shady people out there, particularly in the film industry, and in some circumstances the “casting couch” story is absolutely true, even for people working behind the camera. Needless to say, some interviews ended abruptly. The main recommendation I would give to employers would be to be completely and totally up front. Just be honest with us. If this unpaid internship will not lead to a job, tell us. Sometimes the experience is valuable on its own. If you want a personal assistant, advertise that, not a job that involves working on a project that doesn’t actually exist. If the job is unpaid, do not list the salary as “competitive.” If you are honest, you will build much better working relationships with potential employees. What I learned Key take-aways from Heather’s experience: Don’t put up with degrading or possibly illegal behaviour on the part of an employer, and report it to the proper authorities when necessary. If an internship doesn’t pay, make sure it will provide the industry experience and networking opportunities you’ll need to take the next step in your career.

ry away from their first Stanley Cup appearance in 21 years after beating Roloson’s backup, Mike Smith,

in Game 5. Boucher opted to give Smith his first career playoff start after pulling Roloson from two of the previous three games against the Bruins, saying he felt the veteran whose acquisition in January was critical to Tampa Bay’s turnaround season needed a “breather.” Although Smith was solid during Monday night’s 3-1 loss, Boucher sounded as though it was an easy de-

cision to go back to Roloson. “This is a perfect situation. He’s going to be the only rested guy in the two teams,” Boucher said yesterday, noting Roloson has responded well to breaks this season. “He’s one of the hardestworking guys on our team. He puts in a lot of hours and a lot of time,” the Lightning coach added. “And he’s like everybody else. At some point or an-

other, he just needs to breathe a little bit.” Smith shut down Boston after Roloson fell behind 30 in the opening period of Game 4, giving Tampa Bay a chance to rally for a 5-3 victory. He stopped 17 of 19 shots Monday night, with the Bruins adding an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. A Lightning victory sends the series back to Boston for Game 7 on Friday night. Aching Tiger may miss U.S. Open primer Tiger Woods says he’ll be ready to go for the U.S. Open. Good thing for Woods there’s time to get healthy. The golfing great hasn’t hit a ball in about two weeks. Woods needs crutches and a walking boot for relief on his aching left leg. He won’t even start leg training until the end of next week.

“There’s a difference between being in pain and being injured.” TIGER WOODS

But Woods expects to tee off at the U.S. Open June 1619 in Bethesda, Md. “You just play through these things,” he said. He is bothered by pain in his left knee, left Achilles tendon, tightening in his

calf and has a sore lower back. Woods says doctors have not mentioned leg surgery. But he doubts he’ll play the Memorial next week in Dublin, Ohio. How Woods’ leg responds when he starts train-

ing next week will determine when he can start hitting balls again — all but ruling out the Memorial. That means Woods would go to the U.S. Open with little competition. “I’ve had four surgeries on it,” he said. “Obviously, it’s not what it was when I was little.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Fuel-economy

Two sturdy styles

Traction

The fuel-economy issue is crucial since all other Land Rover/Range Rover models are inherently thirsty beasts. For example, the best that either the V8-powered Range Rover or its Range Rover Sport relation can muster is 17.3 l/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Although the Evoque’s actual numbers have yet to be published, its 240horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, sourced from Ford, will be a relative gas miser.

When ogling the attractive two- and fourdoor body styles, it’s difficult to believe that the Evoque is the real deal when tackling the kind of off-road terrain that made its iconic ancestors so desirable. With its short front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, the odds of becoming hung up on uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog would seem remote.

Traction is supplied by a full-time allwheel-drive system with an electronically controlled centre differential that varies torque between the front and rear wheels depending on where the grip is greatest. The Evoque’s underpinnings can be supplemented with an adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option that offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride.

EP BAS Ford once owned Land Rover, but is it really out of the picture now that Tata controls things? There has been rampant speculation that the Evoque engine is actually the 2.0-litre Ford Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder. That would appear to be the case.

A Range Rover you can afford MALCOLM GUNN

DRIVE@METRONEWS.CA WHEELBASE MEDIA

“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable en-

durance. Although the Evoque arrives this fall in multi-terrain-capable condition, high style at a good price is where this Range Rover really shines. The Evoque appears more like a sport wagon derivative of a compact passenger car, especially in two-door livery. It’s slightly shorter than a Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, or Jeep Patriot and about 45 centimetres shorter than a Range Rover Sport. As well, with its steeply raked windshield and tapered roofline, it can also lay claim to being one of the slinkiest, wind-cheating-est rigs around. With a starting price in the $50,000 range, the Evoque should provoke fresh patrons to consider a Range Rover to carry them down a decidedly different path.

Although it appears as though the shift lever has been broken off, there’s actually a knob that takes care of things.

Land Rover claims that the Evoque will accelerate to 100 km/h from zero in 7.6 seconds, no doubt aided by some significant weight-reducing measures that include the use of plastic front fenders and rear liftgate, aluminum hood and roof panels plus various suspension components.

Lincoln MKX AWD Base price: $48,150 Updated design for 2011 is elegant and distinctive. Standard 305-hp V6.

HAPPINESS IS NEW, BIG, SHINY WHEELS AUTO PILOT MIKE GOETZ DRIVE @METRONEWS.CA

W

hat’s the most efficient way to both beatify your vehicle and upgrade its performance? Simple. Get out of the car and let someone else drive... someone who’s better looking and a faster driver. If that’s not going to work for you, consider the second-best option — a new set of wheels and tires. A well-chosen set of alloy rims fitted with aggressive tires looks awesome. And because they are lighter, stronger, and put

more and stiffer rubber on the road than your stock pieces, your vehicle’s handling dynamics will substantially improve as well. It’s a no-brainer. But before you jump in the pool, may we suggest these safety tips, gleamed from our conversation with Param Johl, owner and operator of Megawheelz in Mississauga, Ont., (megawheelz.com). Megawheelz stocks over 5,000 wheels at any given time. The staff sees a lot of wheel consumers, from serious customizers, to those contemplating their first wheel upgrade. When they see those in the latter group, staff often start the consultation process with a reality check. Johl notes that 20inch and larger wheels are certainly in vogue and captivating, but that doesn’t mean they should go on everything, particularly

So unless you’re buildsmaller cars. ing a show car, or a hobby “People see these large car for occasional preening rims on the SUVs and around the ‘hood, forget trucks of their buddies and about “Dub” wheels. (Dub want them for their vehibecame the famous short cles too ... but if they have form of “double dime,” a a small car, we have to excooler way of referring to plain that it is just not gotires that are 20 inches or ing to work for them.” larger.) For one thing, a small car will need sheet metal and other modifications to accommodate 20-inchers. For another, huge rims necessitate extremely low profile tires, and that combination, while visually overthe-top, means the vehicle will ride Concept One's new Executive hard — very hard wheel line is designed for — like you’re luxury cars, and features a chrome stainless steel lip. For a riding on wheels of daily drivconcrete.

er, Johl suggests “plus one” or “plus two” sizing. For a vehicle that comes stock with 15-inch wheels, that means upgrading to 16inch or 17-inch wheel/tire sets. The rims are bigger and more beautiful, but by fitting them with tires with shorter sidewalls (called low-profile tires), the new tire is able to retain the same diameter as the original one. This is crucial, because over-sized wheels/tires can cause problems with suspension travel, and various computer systems for braking, shifting and instrumentation. There is a bewildering array of wheel designs out there. While the big brands, (American Racing, Foose, O.Z., etc.) continue to set the fashion pace, many smaller brands have

entered the market, offering cheaper takes on hit designs and cool designs of their own. Many websites have 3-D configurators, so you can visualize your ride with all the possibilities. Johl noted that matte, anodized and painted finishes are currently popular. But he adds that the king of bling, chrome, continues to have its fans, even though the chroming process adds considerable weight to an alloy wheel. A good quality alloy wheel set, with good quality rubber, from a reputable and professional wheel shop, will set you back about $1,100 to $1,200. You can pay more of course, or less. Like your choice of design, it’s all up to you. Express yourself. Then roll slowly through the neighbourhood, with the window down and a face that says, “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.”

Keeping just the right temperature FORD

Focus Electric uses thermal management technology on batteries

DRIVING FORCE JIL MCINTOSH DRIVE@METRONEWS.CA

Batteries are a lot like people: they don’t function as efficiently if they’re too cold or too hot. With an all-electric vehicle, keeping the battery at its optimum temperature helps to improve charging and increase the vehicle’s range. For its upcoming Focus Electric, scheduled to launch in Canada next year, Ford uses thermal management technology, a liquid heating and cooling system that works when the car’s lithium-ion battery is plugged in and charging at a wall socket.

“Batteries like to stay around 20 to 30C, says Sherif Marakby, director of electrification programs and engineering for Ford. “The performance of a cold battery is worse than a warm one. Ford’s system uses a mixture of water and antifreeze that circulates across the cells inside the battery pack. It’s sealed, so owners don’t have to check it or top it up. It’s also engineered for safety. The water flows through separate channels across the battery surface, and goes nowhere near the terminals or any electrical components. Depending on the outside temperature, the system uses either a heating element to warm the fluid, or a heat exchanger to cool

Coming soon The Ford Focus Electric will be built in Michigan and is scheduled to go on sale in Canada in 2012. A portable 240-volt charger will be available, allowing it to be fully charged from depleted in just over three hours.

it, along with a pump to circulate it. Once the vehicle is plugged in to charge it, the system determines if the battery needs to be heated or cooled. If so, it then activates, getting its power strictly from the wall outlet. “It only happens while it’s charging, Marakby says. “We manage that automatically, so the customer doesn’t have to do any-

thing. They just plug in the vehicle. In extreme temperatures, whether it’s too hot or too cold, the chemistry and the battery cells have limitations on how far and how fast they can charge. With this system, it allows the maximum performance from a charge standpoint. You can put more charge into the battery in extremely cold temperatures, and therefore more range. Marakby says that liquid cooling is more effective for regulating lithium-ion battery temperatures than an air-cooling system on the larger, more complex battery packs used in electric cars. The sealed battery retains the temperature for some time, he says, and will stay within its ideal range on the daily drive.

A long lifespan is a good thing TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series are inexpensive and solid used truck buys

SECOND GEAR

What’s the 4-1-1 Model: 1998 to 2007 Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series Vehicle Type: Pickup

JUSTIN PRITCHARD DRIVE@METRONEWS.CA

The Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series pickups might be the longest-lived models on the Canadian market. With a lifespan from 1998 to 2010, these small, cross-branded pickups lived from 1998 to 2010 with minimal changes. Cheap, capable and reliable, they offered plenty of selection to shoppers after anything from a simple two-wheel drive work truck to a nicely loaded 4x4. Low used prices and good overall reliability make these trucks worthy contenders for your used

pickup dollars. Selection is tremendous. Depending on the year and model selected, used shoppers can look for numerous engine, transmission, drivetrain and body configurations. Also depending on the year and model in question, feature content included such goodies as tire pressure monitoring, tip-up rear seats, ABS brakes, fog lamps, chrome accents and power accessories. Engine options included a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 120 horsepower, and

Mazda B-Series

both three and four-litre V6 units with 150 or 160 horsepower, respectively. From 2001 and on, a new four-litre V6 engine ramped output up to 200 horsepower. What Owners Like

Owners seem most satisfied with the styling, comfort, interior space, legroom, offroad capability and overall value of their trucks. Depending on the model in question, ride quality is also highly rated, and depending on the equipped

engine, some owners even report good fuel mileage. Confident trailer towing and 4x4 operation round out the package. What Owners Dislike

Common complaints include small rear seats, subpar power output with the smaller engines, a bouncy ride (depending on the model), excessive fuel consumption with the larger engines, and a big turning circle. “Clumsy rear doors and limited headroom for taller

drivers and passengers round out the list of common complaints. Common Issues

Check your potential used Ranger or B-Series for rust at the rear cab corners, lower portions of the doors, driver’s floor board, around the wheelwells, on the bottom of the tailgate, and on the corners of the roof. Owner’s forums also suggest checking for cracks or leaks from the differentials and transfer case. Ensure the transfer case

switches between its various drive modes as outlined in the owner’s manual, and note that any unwelcomed vibrations or sounds from beneath the vehicle could be the result of a worn out or damaged suspension component or driveshaft. Finally, note the quality of the gear shift between second and third on models with the automatic transmission. If the transmission feels like its slipping or “flaring during said shift, there’s likely a problem with a gearshift solenoid in the transmission. The Verdict

Search for as new a used model as possible, and note that a Ford or Mazda mechanic will be familiar with how to search for any potential issues. The low price of a used Ranger or B-Series, as well as its overall value and looks will be its biggest draw.
