Cuts hurt kids: Parents
Mideast
$19-million school board budget shortfall means 344 fewer teaching and support staff jobs $52-million surplus of August 2009 will be gone by 2012: Board chair SHELLEY WILLIAMSON/METRO
The same day the province rolled out funding for 22 new schools, parents with children in Edmonton Public Schools learned 229 teaching positions will likely be chopped. Concerned parents say the cuts will fail students the most. “It’s really hard because it’s the children it affects,” said Vanessa Sauve, whose son goes to Hollyrood School. Sauve is among parents planning a rally at the legislature grounds Sunday at noon, as is Justine Leszczynski, whose daughter and son also attend Hollyrood. “There are children who are going to fall through the cracks, and who is going to stand up for them?” asked Leszczynski. Though the final numbers will net a vote in June, EPSB chair Dave Colburn announced the projected cut as part of a 2011-12 budget announcement yesterday. “The reality still looks grim, frankly, for Edmonton Public Schools,” said Colburn. Along with the 229 teaching positions, the board plans to cull 115 non-teaching posts, he said, attributing it to a 1.1 per cent increase in provincial funding to
The Edmonton Catholic School Board is expected to hand down its budget June 14, and has forecast a possible $9-million deficit.

Though combined classes are likely, the board’s two-year school moratorium will keep closures “off the table,” for now, he said.

Lynn Gough, left, and Justine Leszczynski worry their children’s quality of education at Hollyrood School may decline with possibly three fewer full-time staff positions next school year.

No rose for Alberta bachelor An Alberta man vying for the heart of this season’s bachelorette walked away empty handed Monday night, as one of six contestants who failed to get a rose from Ashley Hebert at the end of the two-hour premiere of The Bachelorette. University of Calgary Greek and Roman studies Prof. Peter Toohey says that boredom is not all bad, and he even credits it for some of history’s greatest ideas. “If you’re feeling bored, you shouldn’t think it’s crazy or silly,” Toohey said. “It’s a proper reaction to circumstances that can be harmful and you need to remedy them.” The professor, who studies boredom as an art stimulus, warns if boredom is left unrelieved it can lead to anger and depression, so it is best to do something about it when it occurs. About 1,000 new spaces to be created in joint facility Numerous communities to benefit from new or modernized schools by 2014 HEATHER MCINTYRE

Classrooms in Beaumont bursting at the seams will see some relief come 2014. Premier Ed Stelmach announced yesterday at Ecole Coloniale Estates School that students would benefit from two new schools. The joint school facility project will serve students from both the Black Gold School Division and St. Thomas Aquinas Roman
(STAR) Catholic School Division. “It’s taken nine years to get here today,” said Black Gold chair Sandy Koroll. Schools in Beaumont have been crowded for years, with some students even taking classes in the town’s community hall. STAR opened a temporary school in 2010. “(This) will take the pressure off,” said Stelmach, adding he can “almost guarantee” the facility will open its doors in the fall of 2014. George Rogers, MLA for
Leduc-Beaumont-Devon, thanked parents and staff alike for being patient, yet persistent. The announcement came the same day the Edmonton Public School Board announced a proposed budget cutting 344 staff positions, including 229 teaching ones. The Alberta Teachers Association estimates that as many as 1,000 positions could be lost in schools across the province, but Stelmach said he doesn’t foresee issues with staffing the new schools.

A total of 22 schools will be built across the province and another 13 will be modernized at an estimated cost of $550 million by 2014. The Government of Alberta expects the student population to soar by about 100,000 by 2020 — to 700,000 pupils. Projects will be delivered through a combination of publicprivate partnerships.

New tech may open cold cases Crime scene fingerprints just got a little clearer for the Edmonton Police Service. The EPS, along with the Calgary Police Service and the Regina Police Service, are utilizing a new Automated Fingerprint Identification System, which will enhance the identification network in Western Canada. The technology, based out of Calgary, has been in place since February. “It’s got double the resolution so what we’re finding with that is we’re making a lot more criminal identifications than we had with the old system,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Brian Rayner of the CPS. GAS SERVICE INQUIRY
Report on freezing death out Alberta Justice released a report yesterday on an inquiry held after a Calgary man froze to death in his home in 2006. John Frederick Davis
New fingerprint system could help crack cases.
Along with helping with future cases, the new system will open the door to cold cases dating back even earlier than 1986. He said there are approximately 22,000 unsolved cases in Calgary, Edmonton and Regina and 188 of those files have been run through the new system. Thus far, 50 people have been identified in relation to those unsolved cases. KATIE TURNER
had been without gas service for almost six months, despite the bill being paid by his mother and a request being made to have it turned back on. The report directed ATCO Gas and Direct Energy in new efforts to ensure similar deaths do not occur, but ruled the company cannot shut customers’ power off after Nov. 1. METRO

There are six kilometres of dedicated bike lanes in Edmonton, including on Victoria Promenade downtown.
City paving way for dedicated bike lanes Dedicated stretches to be implemented on south side this summer View planned routes online at edmonton.ca/cycling HEATHER MCINTYRE
@METRONEWS.CA
Cyclists are gaining ground in Edmonton as the city plans to implement 18 kilometres worth of dedicated bike lanes this summer. “We are definitely really excited,” said Chris Chan, president of the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters Society. “I think they’re going to be really highly used.” The city already has 117 kilometres of bike
routes (marked with signage only) and sharrows (marked lanes shared with vehicles), as well as about six kilometres of dedicated bike lanes on one-way streets, said Andrew Siggelkow, project engineer with the city’s sustainable transportation department. The lanes to be installed are on the southside: 76 Avenue, 97 Street, 106 Street and Saddleback Road Loop. Siggelkow said the lanes are generally done along with roadway reha-
bilitation. “Next year and in the coming years we’ll definitely be doing more (elsewhere),” he said. Elsewhere could include 102 Avenue downtown, as a report that is going to a council committee today about the downtown LRT connector includes a plan for a dedicated bike lane on the roadway. “We have been looking at it,” said Siggelkow. “We want to … get the mixed modes in use in the downtown area.”
Two-wheel news There will be an information kiosk on the bike lane projects for this summer at Southgate Centre by the food court on June 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The goal of the 2009 Bicycle Transportation Plan is to have 500 kilometres of routes within 10 years. The city has 275 kilometres of shared paths, sidewalks and multi-use trails, and 460 kilometres of single track and unimproved trails.

Doing so would provide better information on the exact location of tracks, stations, cost and other details by 2013, according to the report. The first section to be completed is from downtown to 75 Street and Whitemud Drive on the southeast line, where there are also plans for a service yard. Compromises pledged U.S. Congress gives Israeli PM standing ovations days after his dustup with Barack Obama Netanyahu rejects ‘indefensible’ pre-1967 borders Borders Israel, which enjoys strong bipartisan backing in U.S. Congress, has been rattled by U..S. President Barack Obama’s support for drawing the future borders of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state on the basis of Israel’s pre-1967 war frontiers. Benjamin Netanyahu has challenged Obama’s position repeatedly, ignoring Obama’s assertion that the territorial markers could be adjusted through agreed land swaps. The Palestinians accept that principle. In his speech before Congress, Netanyahu backed off from his dispute with Obama.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged yesterday to make “painful compromises” for peace with the Palestinians, for the first time explicitly saying that some West Bank settlements would find themselves outside Israel’s final borders. He also tacked on a list of often-stated conditions that have been unacceptable to the Palestinians. Speaking before a warmly receptive joint

He also restated Israel’s refusal to repatriate millions of Palestinian refugees and their families a peace deal fell far short of what is needed to resume negotiations. Travel schedules turn to ashes Erupting Iceland volcano grounds flights — again But no mishap as defiant budget airline takes off

Ash spewing from an Icelandic volcano is bringing disruption and uncertainty to European air travel. Despite claims of a massive over-reaction, hundreds of flights were cancelled yesterday as winds blew the cloud of ash from the Grimsvotn volcano over Scotland and other parts of Europe. Experts say particles in the ash could stall jet engines. Officials in Germany said dozens of flights would be grounded today. The only comfort for frustrated passengers and airlines is that officials in Iceland said the amount of ash being released by the volcano was decreasing. The officials don’t ex-
Mystery videos spark sex scandal Graphic black-and-white videos have sparked a sex scandal in Turkey. They appear to show senior members of an opposition party in liaisons with women who are not their wives. The video spies did not just rig hidden cameras. They posted taunting screen text, a soundtrack and even an adults-only rating before slapping the footage on the Internet. The scandal could benefit the government in elections next month. If the opposition party, known by its Turkish acronym MHP, falls below a vote threshold of 10 per cent on June 12, it will lose a place in parliament. Ten MHP members have quit, but the videos urged the ouster of the MHP leadership. “If you have at least a little bit of shame … you should all resign,” said an on-screen message. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Although British authorities said concentrations of ash in the skies over Scotland were too high to fly through, Irish budget airline Ryanair challenged the results, saying it had sent its own airplane into Scottish airspace and found no ash in the atmosphere. “We encountered absolutely no problems,” said Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary. “There's no cloud over Scotland. You would think Harold Camping would know when to shut up already. Camping is the 89-year-old PAUL SULLIVAN evangelist from Oakland, METRO Calif., who managed to convince a lot of gullible people that the world was coming to an end Saturday (and it would have spoiled a long weekend, too). Then, as Saturday dawned on Business as Usual, Camping compounded his cuckoo quotient by claiming it was a mathematical error and the real end of the world is still coming Oct. 21. Those people who sold all their worldly possessions to prepare for Apocalypse Now are stuck and will have to make it until Oct. 21 with just the clothes on their backs until they are saved, or taken up, or whatever. Camping tried this trick before in 1994 and it didn’t work then either. Same problem — mathematical error. Camping may be one heck of a preacher, but he should “(Harold) consider remedial math. And come Oct. 21, we could be the victims of a cataclysmic coincidence, and there is Camping saying “I told you so” as he gets taken up. “Next time, you’ll listen. Oops, my bad. There is no next time.” The truth is (and I can’t believe I need to say this) whatever does or does not happen to the world Oct. 21 will have nothing to do with some old guy from Oakland. There are 170-billion galaxies in the known universe and each galaxy has between 200-billion and 400-billion stars. It’s more than a little difficult to believe that God will point a big old finger at the tiny third planet circling around one of those 400-billion stars and say “That’s it, folks. Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning ASUNCION, Paraguay. The Asuncion zoo is desperately seeking a mate for Coco, the last known male of his species left in Paraguay. Coco is an endangered hyacinth macaw, known in Paraguayan Spanish as a “papagayo azul.” Scientists estimated several years ago that only 6,500 were left in the wild, mostly in an area of neighbouring Brazil that is quickly losing natural habitat for the birds. Capturing and exporting the Macaws is illegal and Coco was sent to the zoo eight years ago after authorities broke up a gang of animal traffickers. Only recently did a DNA test show he is male, zoo veterinarian Cristiane Rainner said. To avoid mixing species, the zoo has had to keep him apart from other Macaws, which has left him lonely and a bit bored, Rainner said. “He’s quite sociable, although he’s only learned to say ‘hello.’ But when he hears the cumbia he dances,” Rainner said. “The hyacinth macaw is a beauty, but if it doesn’t reproduce, that’ll be it. Coco is a male and his life expectancy is 80 years.”

Forming an empire and defending free speech In 1998, Winfrey forms Oxygen Media, which would spawn the Oxygen cable channel. Denies being gay After years of dogged rumours about her sexuality, and questions about her relationship with friend Gayle King, Winfrey opens up to Barbara Walters in December 2010. “I’m not lesbian. I’m not even kind of lesbian,” she said, soon tearing up while praising King. “She is … the mother I never had. She is … the sister everybody would want.”
The Queen of Daytime and the King of Pop In 1993, it was only Winfrey who could get the pale Michael Jackson to explain that he had not bleached his skin, but that he had skin-pigment disorder known as vitiligo. Maria Shriver was reportedly so enraged after learning about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s illegitimate child that she instructed her team to leak word of it to the press, according to TMZ. And apparently Shriver initially wanted to hold a press conference to unveil the scandal, but, “Maria’s friends talked her off a ledge and a plan was eventually hatched to leak the details to the L.A. Indiana brings his goodies to Montreal Items from the four Indiana Jones movies go on display at Montreal Science Centre Exhibit aims to raise interest in archaeology and celebrate the 30th anniversary of franchise HANDOUT
Travel in brief George Lucas figures he’s working on his third generation of Star Wars fans. And plenty of them were standing in line with their parents Friday to get first crack at Walt Disney World’s overhauled ride based on the iconic movie franchise. Fact, fiction and fun are melded together in a new exhibit in Montreal’s Old Port which celebrates intrepid archeologist Indiana Jones 30 years after he burst onto the big screen with feats of daring and the crack of a bullwhip. Visitors to Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology at the Montreal Science Centre are welcomed by a bilingual message from no less than Harrison Ford, who brought Indy to life in the movies beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. The original Raiders remains one of the top-grossing films of all time and was followed by three sequels and a TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. There have also been comic books and video games with the character. Angio-Morneau, a designer and museologist with Montreal’s X3 Productions, says the idea for the show came from Lucasfilm when it saw the success of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. “Lucasfilm realized that there was a lot of attention and that he was still very famous, a well-loved character,” she said. “Lucasfilm has all these amazing ob-

A new way to see L.A.

New sightseeing app links to double-decker bus tour Gives users points of interests at each stop
For many Los Angeles locals — such as myself, born and raised in the crosshairs of Hollywood — avoiding the Hollywood Walk of Fame and its throngs, celebrity impersonators and tchotchke stores comes with jaded Angeleno territory. But there I was on a recent spring day, tourist-chic in a wide-brimmed hat, navigating the area on a red double-decker tour bus and enjoying the heck out of myself, with the help of City Sightseeing’s iPhone app. The free app for your iPhone or Android phone is a worldwide app for multiple cities that host City Sightseeing tour buses. The City Sightseeing app for Los Angeles coincides with local Starline Tours’ Hop-on, Hop-off Double Decker City Tour, featuring routes in Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and downtown L.A. The app allows you to buy tickets for the bus tours and get information on where and what the stops are. There’s also a way to email “postcards of pictures taken during the tour. “The City Sightseeing mobile app delivers a pioneering solution, with many features and functions, across a multi-platform solution that no other
If you go ‌ Starline Tours: City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off double-decker buses offer four loops with various points of interest. The Red Route loop to Hollywood and Beverly Hills stops at the Kodak Theatre, Rodeo Drive and Sunset Strip among other landmarks. travel company has, especially other bus and coach operators, said Mandy Gaughan, City Sightseeing’s director of marketing and sales. “The app consumed all the technology that the smartphones had available, including, GPS, camera, video, audio. Once the app is downloaded from iPhone’s or Android’s app store (search for City Sightseeing), and the city location is selected, a home screen comes up with tabs to book tours, look at photos of various tourist hotspots, send postcards and scroll through guides listing stops and tour details. I chose, through the L.A. app, to try out some stops
on Starline’s Hop-On, HopOff Blue Route, which goes from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on the Walk of Fame to nearby Universal Studios, and on the Red Route, which stretches from the Walk of Fame all the way to swanky Beverly Hills and back. You can change routes on the guide page by pressing a plus sign next to the route name. Clicking on a freeway-type symbol below that, next to “Viewing Stop, shows a list of all the stops and stop numbers on that route. After getting the hang of it, I scrolled through multiple points of interest listed for each route. Each stop lists different landmarks and attractions, such as the Comedy Store and Sunset Strip for stop No. 4 on the Red Route, in West Hollywood. Jumping on the open-top two-tiered Red Route bus at its first stop, Grauman’s, I was happy to find that 12 area points of interest, from the historic Egyptian Theater to the Hollywood Guinness World of Records Museum, were listed, each with concise summaries. An automated tour broadcast in English and American accents from speakers on the bus added even more tidbits of information and celebrity-filled anecdotes. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS JAE C. WORKPLACE LAW
Employment lawyers predict that cases of dismissal involving Twitter and Facebook will become common ISTOCK
Those in the public eye aren’t the only ones who should watch what they tweet. Lawyers warn it probably won’t be long before an unknown Internet user inadvertently becomes a case study in how not to use social media. Lawyers caution that there are real risks in sharing potentially controversial opinions or statements with the world via Twitter, or even in a private network on Facebook. But they can’t say exactly what kind of statements constitute crossing the line, because Canadian courts haven’t weighed in on the issue — yet. Toronto employment CORRECTION: Please note that on May 16, Teresa Kruze’s Turning Point column featured a sidebar that, due to a publication error, was missing the following step: “Put steaks off to the side with no heat.” This step should have appeared after, “Sear one minute each side with the lid open.”
Could a click of the mouse mean the end of your career?
lawyer Stacey Ball isn’t hearing about many claims of wrongful dismissal associated with social media posts gone wrong, but he expects that will change eventually. “It does happen but you don’t see a lot of it, it’s sort of a very recent phenomenon,” says Ball, who is also the author of the industry tome Canadian Employment Law. “But you’re going to see more of this.” Under Canadian law, a non-unionized employee can be fired at any time, for any reason provided they’re given adequate notice or pay in lieu. But an oft-cited 1967 Ontario Court of Ap-
peal ruling provides grounds for an employer to terminate without compensation. “If an employee has been guilty of serious misconduct, habitual neglect of duty, incompetence, or conduct incompatible with his duties, or prejudicial to the employer’s business, or if he has been guilty of wilful disobedience to the employer’s orders in a matter of substance, the law recognizes the employer’s right summarily to dismiss the delinquent employee,” reads the decision. Two recent cases define the current state of workplace law in Canada above all others. Both cases have made a drastic impact, and both are often misunderstood. When the Supreme Court mostly erased the substantial damages a lower court awarded to Kevin Keays, an assembly line worker at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ont., employers in Canada collectively sighed in relief. According to the court, employers would no longer be responsible for “bad faith” damages based on how
they treat their employees. Instead, it declared that employees could sue for mistreatment only if they could prove they actually suffered from harm. Most corporate lawyers leapt on the bandwagon and pronounced bad faith damages all but dead. An employee could be mistreated, they routinely argued, but without evidence of a medical illness, damages would be much more difficult to achieve. That is wrong. In the three years since the Supreme Court released its decision in Keays, lower courts have not applied it consistently and sometimes not at all. In one recent appellate case, the court upheld a bad faith damage award, as if the Supreme Court’s decision had never been rendered at all. While the law may have changed, it is possibly only in the name.
Similarly, when the Supreme Court ordered Donald Evans to return to work after his employer had already fired him, employers in this country felt they had gone from strength to strength. Employees have a duty to “mitigate” their losses following dismissal and, according to the Supreme Court, this duty includes taking a job with the company that has just fired them. Cognizant of the problems this finding could cause, the court thankfully made several exceptions. If returning to work was humiliating, for example, employees could refuse to return. Since then, companies have routinely relied on this decision in an effort to deny wrongful dismissal claims. DANIEL LUBLIN IS AN EMPLOYMENT LAWYER WITH WHITTEN & LUBLIN LLP. I attended Humber College’s Film and Television Production program and

I interned at several companies that absolutely guaranteed I would get a job after six months, only to later discover that they had no intention of hiring me. Once I inquired about this “job offer,” they would let me go and look for a new, unpaid intern.

When I did manage to get a paying job, which was rare, it was usually an “honorarium,” so I was paid significantly under minimum wage to work full-time. Without going into detail, I will say that there are a lot of shady people out there, particularly in the film industry, and in some circumstances the “casting couch” story is absolutely true, even for people working behind the camera. The main recommendation I would give to employers would be to be completely and totally up front. Just be honest with us. If this unpaid internship will not lead to a job, tell us. Sometimes the experience is valuable on its own. If you want a personal assistant, advertise that, not a job that involves working on a project that doesn’t actually exist. If the job is unpaid, do not list the salary as “competitive.” If you are honest, you Where Heather is now

No snow days? Could the advent of the Internet mean the end of sudden, snow-covered days off for young students? ISTOCK
Could the Internet mean the end of snow days? Some schools think so, and they are experimenting with ways for students to do lessons online during bad weather, potentially allowing classes to go on during even the worst blizzard. “Virtual snow days” would help ease pressure on school calendars. Because districts are required to be in session for a certain number of hours or days, losing teaching time to winter weather can mean extending the school day or cutting short spring break or summer vacation. And cancelling school in the winter, when some of the most difficult material of the year is covered, risks leaving students with a learning deficit heading into the spring, when many states administer standardized tests.
The busses aren’t running? No problem!
“Even if you can't continue on at the same pace, being able to keep students on track can make a huge difference,” said Doug Levin, executive director of the non-profit State Educational Technology Directors Association. Virtual learning, which has been widely used by colleges and universities for years, is becoming more viable for younger students as teachers and administrators grow comfortable with the technology. Online
learning also saves money because districts don't have to pay for transportation, electricity and custodians. But there are obstacles, too. Many families don't have Internet access with speeds that would support complex classroom-style work, especially in rural areas and impoverished inner cities. Families with multiple children - without multiple computers - could be hard-pressed to keep up. And some people say kids just need an occasional extra day off in the depths of winter. “When deep snow falls, the world becomes quiet and still. And if we listen to our instincts, we settle in and enjoy the pure joy of not doing,” David Santner wrote on the website for the Poughkeepsie Day School in New York.

Top-seeded Nadal survives first-round scare at French Open
“We’re all professionals here ... All I’m looking for is to turn the page, go forward and play hard.” NEW YORK METS OUTFIELDER CARLOS BELTRAN. THE METS PLAYED THEIR FIRST GAME LAST NIGHT SINCE TEAM OWNER FRED WILPON SHARPLY CRITICIZED METS PLAYERS BELTRAN, JOSE REYES AND DAVID WRIGHT IN AN ARTICLE ON THE NEW YORKER’S WEBSITE.
“Fred Wilpon loves this team with all his heart and I know that, so we’re just going to rally together and win as many games and play as well as we can play.”
Rafael Nadal excelled when he needed to most, winning the final two sets against John Isner yesterday to advance to the second round at the French Open with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4 victory. The five-time champion, who is 39-1 at Roland Garros, played a five-set match at the tourney for the first time in seven visits. “Tough, tough moments for me,” Nadal said. “I played too nervous, in my opinion.” The No. 1-seeded Nadal is trying to equal Bjorn Borg’s record of six French Open titles. Bolts trust Roloson for Game 6 Facing elimination, Tampa Bay turns to 41-year-old goaltender ‘We’re behind, but it doesn’t scare us,’ says Martin St. Louis Bruins shooting for first trip to Stanley Cup finals since 1990 The Tampa Bay Lightning are once again hitching their hopes of blocking Boston’s path to the Stanley Cup finals on goaltender Dwayne Roloson. Down 3-2 to the Bruins in the Eastern Conference finals, coach Guy Boucher said Roloson is “the guy that took us here,” so he’ll be in net for Game 6 when the Lightning try to even the best-of-seven series tonight. The Bruins are one victo-

ry away from their first Stanley Cup appearance in 21 years after beating Roloson’s backup, Mike Smith,
in Game 5. Boucher opted to give Smith his first career playoff start after pulling Roloson from two of the previous three games against the Bruins, saying he felt the veteran whose acquisition in January was critical to Tampa Bay’s turnaround season needed a “breather.” Although Smith was solid during Monday night’s 3-1 loss, Boucher sounded as though it was an easy de-
cision to go back to Roloson. “This is a perfect situation. He’s going to be the only rested guy in the two teams,” Boucher said yesterday, noting Roloson has responded well to breaks this season. “He’s one of the hardestworking guys on our team. He puts in a lot of hours and a lot of time,” the Lightning coach added. “And he’s like everybody else. At some point or an-
other, he just needs to breathe a little bit.” Smith shut down Boston after Roloson fell behind 30 in the opening period of Game 4, giving Tampa Bay a chance to rally for a 5-3 victory. He stopped 17 of 19 shots Monday night, with the Bruins adding an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. A Lightning victory sends the series back to Boston for Game 7 on Friday night. Aching Tiger may miss U.S. Open primer Tiger Woods says he’ll be ready to go for the U.S. Open. Good thing for Woods there’s time to get healthy. The golfing great hasn’t hit a ball in about two weeks. Woods needs crutches and a walking boot for relief on his aching left leg. He won’t even start leg training until the end of next week.
“There’s a difference between being in pain and being injured.” TIGER WOODS
But Woods expects to tee off at the U.S. Open June 1619 in Bethesda, Md. “You just play through these things,” he said. He is bothered by pain in his left knee, left Achilles tendon, tightening in his
calf and has a sore lower back. Woods says doctors have not mentioned leg surgery. But he doubts he’ll play the Memorial next week in Dublin, Ohio. How Woods’ leg responds when he starts train-
ing next week will determine when he can start hitting balls again — all but ruling out the Memorial. That means Woods would go to the U.S. Open with little competition. “I’ve had four surgeries on it,” he said. “Obviously, it’s not what it was when I was little.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Fuel-economy
Two sturdy styles
Traction
The fuel-economy issue is crucial since all other Land Rover/Range Rover models are inherently thirsty beasts. For example, the best that either the V8-powered Range Rover or its Range Rover Sport relation can muster is 17.3 l/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Although the Evoque’s actual numbers have yet to be published, its 240horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, sourced from Ford, will be a relative gas miser.
When ogling the attractive two- and fourdoor body styles, it’s difficult to believe that the Evoque is the real deal when tackling the kind of off-road terrain that made its iconic ancestors so desirable. With its short front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, the odds of becoming hung up on uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog would seem remote.
Traction is supplied by a full-time allwheel-drive system with an electronically controlled centre differential that varies torque between the front and rear wheels depending on where the grip is greatest. The Evoque’s underpinnings can be supplemented with an adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option that offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride.

EP BAS Ford once owned Land Rover, but is it really out of the picture now that Tata controls things? There has been rampant speculation that the Evoque engine is actually the 2.0-litre Ford Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder. That would appear to be the case.

“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and
boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s
steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable endurance. Although the Evoque arrives this fall in multi-terrain-capable condition, high style at a good price is where this Range Rover really shines.
The Evoque appears more like a sport wagon derivative of a compact passenger car, especially in two-door livery. It’s slightly shorter than a Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, or Jeep Patriot and about 45 centimetres shorter than a Range Rover Sport. As well, with its steeply

hat’s the most efficient way to both beatify your vehicle and upgrade its performance? Simple. Get out of the car and let someone else drive... someone who’s better looking and a faster driver. If that’s not going to work for you, consider the second-best option — a new set of wheels and tires. A well-chosen set of alloy rims fitted with aggressive tires looks awesome. And because they are lighter, stronger, and put
more and stiffer rubber on the road than your stock pieces, your vehicle’s handling dynamics will substantially improve as well. It’s a no-brainer. But before you jump in the pool, may we suggest these safety tips, gleamed from our conversation with Param Johl, owner and operator of Megawheelz in Mississauga, Ont., (megawheelz.com). Megawheelz stocks over 5,000 wheels at any given time. The staff sees a lot of wheel consumers, from serious customizers, to those contemplating their first wheel upgrade. When they see those in the latter group, staff often start the consultation process with a reality check. Johl notes that 20inch and larger wheels are certainly in vogue and captivating, but that doesn’t mean they should go on everything, particularly smaller cars.

For one thing, a small For a daicar will need sheet metal ly and other modifications to accommodate 20inchers. For another, huge rims necessitate extremely low profile tires, and that combination, while visually overthe-top, means the vehicle will ride hard — very hard — Concept One's new Executive like you’re riding wheel line is designed for on wheels of luxury cars, and features a chrome stainless steel lip. concrete. So unless you’re
driver, Johl suggests “plus one” or “plus two” sizing. For a vehicle that comes stock with 15-inch wheels, that means upgrading to 16-inch or 17-inch wheel/tire sets. The rims are bigger and more beautiful, but by fitting them with tires with shorter sidewalls (called low-profile tires), the new tire is able to retain the same diameter as the original one. This is crucial, because over-sized wheels/tires can cause problems with suspension travel, and various computer systems for braking, shifting and instrumentation. There is a bewildering array of wheel designs out there. While the big brands, (American Racing, Foose, O.Z., etc.) continue to set the fashion pace, many smaller brands have
entered the market, offering cheaper takes on hit designs and cool designs of their own. Many websites have 3-D configurators, so you can visualize your ride with all the possibilities. Johl noted that matte, anodized and painted finishes are currently popular. But he adds that the king of bling, chrome, continues to have its fans, even though the chroming process adds considerable weight to an alloy wheel. A good quality alloy wheel set, with good quality rubber, from a reputable and professional wheel shop, will set you back about $1,100 to $1,200. You can pay more of course, or less. Like your choice of design, it’s all up to you. Express yourself. Then roll slowly through the neighbourhood, with the window down and a face that says, “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.”

Common Issues
Check your potential used Ranger or B-Series for rust at the rear cab corners, lower portions of the doors, dri-
ver’s floor board, around the wheelwells, on the bottom of the tailgate, and on the corners of the roof. Ensure the transfer case switches between its various drive modes as outlined in the owner’s manual, and note that unwelcomed vibrations or sounds from beneath the vehicle could be the result of a worn out or damaged suspension component or driveshaft. Finally, note the quality of the gear shift between second and third on models with the automatic transmission. If the transmission feels like its slipping during said shift, there’s likely a problem with a gearshift solenoid in the transmission.

Keeping just the right temperature
FORD
Focus Electric uses thermal management technology on batteries
DRIVING FORCE JIL MCINTOSH
Batteries are a lot like people: they don’t function as efficiently if they’re too cold or too hot. With an all-electric vehicle, keeping the battery at
its optimum temperature helps to improve charging and increase the vehicle’s range. For its upcoming Focus Electric, scheduled to
launch in Canada next year, Ford uses thermal management technology, a liquid heating and cooling system that works when the car’s lithium-ion battery is

plugged in and charging at a wall socket. “Batteries like to stay around 20 to 30C,” says Sherif Marakby, director of electrification programs and engineering for Ford. “The performance of a cold battery is worse than a warm one.” Ford’s system uses a mixture of water and antifreeze that circulates across the cells inside the battery pack. It’s sealed, so owners don’t have to check it or top it up. It’s also engineered for safety. The water flows through separate channels across the battery surface, and goes nowhere near the terminals or any electrical components. Depending on the outside temperature, the system uses either a heating element to warm the fluid, or a heat exchanger to cool it, along with a pump to circulate it. Once the vehicle is plugged in to charge it, the system determines if the battery needs to be heated or cooled. If so, it then activates, getting its power strictly from the wall outlet. “It only happens while it’s charging,” Marakby
Coming soon The Ford Focus Electric will be built in Michigan and is scheduled to go on sale in Canada in 2012.
says. “We manage that automatically, so the customer doesn’t have to do anything. They just plug in the vehicle. In extreme temperatures, whether it’s too hot or too cold, the chemistry and the battery cells have limitations on how far and how fast they can charge. With this system, it allows the maximum performance from a charge standpoint. You can put more charge into the battery in extremely cold temperatures, and therefore more range.” Marakby says that liquid cooling is more effective for regulating lithium-ion battery temperatures than an air-cooling system on the larger, more complex battery packs used in electric cars. The sealed battery retains the temperature for some time, he says, and will stay within its ideal range on the daily drive.
