Monday’s unstable weather may have spared London from the serious damage seen south of the border, but next time we might not be so lucky. So what would you do if a severe storm was bearing down on you? Geoff Coulson, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it’s essential to plan ahead and pay attention during the summer months. It’s an appropriate warning, considering London sits smack in the middle of Ontario’s version of Tornado Alley. “That’s an area that gets a fair number of tornadoes and a number of damaging thunderstorms, high winds, rain and damaging hail,” he said.

“While the birds are chirping and the sun is shining and the kids are playing in the background, that’s the time to have a family conference and talk about what you should do if the weather turns nasty.”

A storm is definitely coming: •Coulson said the moment you hear thunder, seek shelter and stay there until 30 minutes after the storm has passed. Lightning can strike before and after. •Seek shelter in a basement if you can, or in an enclosed area protected from debris. •Watch out for strange colours — green or yellow — in the sky, as it could mean large hail.

GEOFF COULSON, METEOROLOGIST WITH

Tornados: •Watch out for rotating clouds, very strong winds and “buckets” of rain at the storm front. •If you see a funnel while driving in the country, find out which way the storm is going and drive away at a 90-degree angle. •If the tornado is too close, Coulson said it’s time to abandon your vehicle, move far away and find a low-lying spot on the ground to seek shelter. “That’s a shelter of last resort.”

ENVIRONMENT CANADA

What to do beforehand: •Sit down with your family and draw up an emergency plan of where to go and what to do. •Watch the skies, particularly the west, for darkening clouds. •If the wind changes suddenly from hot, light breeze to strong and cool, a storm could be on the way.

Tories promise $6B boost to health care TORSTAR FILE PHOTO

A Progressive Conservative government would move health care in Ontario to the top of its agenda and boost spending by $6.1 billion over four years, Opposition Leader Tim Hudak promised yesterday. Ontario families would also see more beds in nursing homes, more money for home care and doctors in communities that need them if the Tories win the Oct. 6 election, he said. At the same time, the Tories will get rid of waste and “unnecessary administration,” starting with the province’s 14 local health integration networks, Hudak said. “I am making health care our No. 1 priority,” he added. The funding pledge works out to an increase of about three per cent annually, increasing total health spending to $53.7

Health platform Hudak didn’t provide specifics on how he would attract doctors to Ontario, but said the plan involved increasing residency spots for graduates.

Tax A few days earlier, Tory officials had confirmed they wouldn’t scrap the health tax — despite suggestions that the premium was a greedy tax grab. Convention More details are expected at the party’s convention this weekend. Privatization concerns “We’re extremely concerned that the Tories would privatize services,” said Natalie Mehra of the Ontario Health Coalition, a patient advocacy group that is worried that Ontario’s publicly funded health-care system may come under attack.

Compromises pledged U.S. Congress applauds Israeli PM days after his dustup with Barack Obama Netanyahu rejects ‘indefensible’ pre-1967 borders Borders Israel, which enjoys strong bipartisan backing in U.S. Congress, has been rattled by President Barack Obama’s support for drawing the future borders of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state on the basis of Israel’s pre-‘67 war frontiers. Benjamin Netanyahu has challenged Obama’s position repeatedly, ignoring Obama’s assertion that the territorial markers could be adjusted through agreed land swaps. The Palestinians accept that principle. In his speech before Congress, Netanyahu backed off from his dispute with Obama, saying the president has not called for a return to the exact borders Israel held before capturing east Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged yesterday to make “painful compromises” for peace with the Palestinians, for the first time explicitly saying that some West Bank settlements would find themselves outside Israel’s final borders. He also tacked on a list of often-stated conditions that have been unacceptable to the Palestinians. Speaking before a

But he repeated his flat rejection of a return to what he called the “indefensible” borders that Israel had before the 1967 Middle East war. He also restated Israel’s Mahmoud Abbas, said Netanyahu’s insistence on keeping key parts of the territories the Palestinians want for their state is a “declaration of war against the Palestinians.” Israeli settlers, the Islamic militant Hamas and Netanyahu’s moderate parliamentary opposition also expressed criticism.

Netanyahu also maintained anew that contested Jerusalem could not be shared with the Palestinians, who want the eastern sector of the holy city as capital of their hoped-for state. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Palestinians want to establish their state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. They have said they are ready for minor border adjustments through land swaps, to enable Israel to annex several of the largest of the dozens of Jewish settlements it has built on war-won land since 1967. The massive tornado that tore through Joplin, Mo., is now officially the deadliest single twister in the U.S. in nearly six decades with a death toll of at least 122. City manager Mark Rohr said yesterday that more than 750 people were injured. Nine people also have been recovered from debris. Crews, taking advantage of the best weather they have had in two days,

busted holes in concrete slabs and sifted through strewn home goods yesterday as rescuers focused on crumpled megastores and apartment complexes in a frantic search for more survivors. One team poked through the remains of a home improvement store, while others searched a Wal-Mart and wrecked apartments as the clock ticked down on another round of severe storms.

Royal visit for Obamas Warm welcome from the Queen cements relations between the U.S. and U.K.

Michelle Obama talks to Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, at Buckingham Palace in London yesterday.

U.S. President Barack Obama spent yesterday in the splendour of Buckingham Palace during his four-state European tour, tending to the importance of U.S. relations with England. Along the way, Obama and his wife Michelle cemented their friendship with the 85-year-old Queen. A 41-gun salute at the palace, a grand ceremony

private luncheon and meeting with newlyweds Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, was followed by a glitzy state dinner, only the second Britain has ever thrown for a U.S. president. In toasting Queen Elizabeth II, Obama called her “a living witness to the power of our alliance and a chief source of its resilience.” The Queen said the relationship

between the two countries is “tried, tested and, yes, special.” Following the gift-giving tradition, the Obamas gave the Queen a selection of memorabilia and photographs from her parents’ 1939 visit to the United States. The Queen gave the president a collection of letters from the Royal Archives and Michelle an

antique brooch. As the Obamas bonded with the Queen, there was a parallel effort to build ties with British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose help Obama will need on an array of issues. Today, Obama will delve into foreign policy with Cameron and address British Parliament. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Chrysler driving its way out of big government debt Company pays off most of loans, but Ottawa still holds stake Five new products launched in Ontario recently High interest has added up with billions still owed Chrysler Group has paid off most of the bailout money it owed to the Canadian, Ontario and U.S. governments after they rescued the automaker from the brink of financial ruin two years ago. Chrysler returned $7.6 billion, including $1.8 billion in high-cost interest, yesterday, a major step forward after the company filed for bankruptcy at the height of the recession. Chrysler said it has retired its original loans six years ahead of schedule. The loan repayment came after the company sold bonds last week and took out a bank loan at a

As part of the deal, Chrysler agreed to maintain about 20 per cent of its North American production in Ontario, where some 9,000 employees work at plants in Etobicoke, Windsor and Brampton as well as dealerships. Those people who sold all their worldly possessions to prepare for Apocalypse Now are stuck and will have to make it until Oct. 21 with just the clothes on their backs until they are saved, or taken up, or whatever. Camping tried this trick before in 1994 and it didn’t work then either. Same problem — mathematical error. Camping may be one heck of a preacher, but he should “(Harold) consider remedial math. Still, it’s hard to blame Camping tried Camping. He’s a fire and this trick before brimstone evangelist who in 1994 and it predicts the end of the didn’t work then world. It comes with the job description. When either. Same you’re a hammer, problem — everything looks like a nail. When you’re a doomsayer, mathematical everything looks like doom. error. Camping And we in the media are may be one heck complicit, promoting of a preacher, Camping’s Grand Delusion with unseemly glee, but he should lending credence to an old consider man’s lunatic ravings. remedial math.” As a story, it’s been just too much fun to pass up. And I’m sure I wasn’t alone as I opened my eyes Saturday morning and looked around with just a touch of smug relief. Still here. Cautionary note: Just because it’s a bunch of baloney doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. Stars explode every day; asteroids plow into planets. And come Oct. 21, we could be the victims of a cataclysmic coincidence, and there is Camping saying “I told you so” as he gets taken up. “Next time, you’ll listen. Oops, my bad. There is no next time.” The truth is (and I can’t believe I need to say this) whatever does or does not happen to the world Oct. 21 will have nothing to do with some old guy from Oakland. There are 170-billion galaxies in the known universe and each galaxy has between 200-billion and 400-billion stars. It’s more than a little difficult to believe that God will point a big old finger at the tiny third planet circling around one of those 400-billion stars and say “That’s it, folks. Rapture time!” She is simply too busy to correct Harold Camping’s bad math. Hallelujah, I say.

Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning ASUNCION, Paraguay. The Asuncion zoo is desperately seeking a mate for Coco, the last known male of his species left in Paraguay. Coco is an endangered hyacinth macaw, known in Paraguayan Spanish as a “papagayo azul.” Scientists estimated several years ago that only 6,500 were left in the wild, mostly in an area of neighbouring Brazil that is quickly losing natural habitat for the birds. Capturing and exporting the Macaws is illegal and Coco was sent to the zoo eight years ago after authorities broke up a gang of animal traffickers. Only recently did a DNA test show he is male, zoo veterinarian Cristiane Rainner said. To avoid mixing species, the zoo has had to keep him apart from other Macaws, which has left him lonely and a bit bored, Rainner said. “He’s quite sociable, although he’s only learned to say ‘hello.’ But when he hears the cumbia he dances,” Rainner said. “The hyacinth macaw is a beauty, but if it doesn’t reproduce, that’ll be it. Coco is a male and his life expectancy is 80 years.”

Stealth chopper at night is optional The official tourist map for Abbottabad, Pakistan, urges visitors to discover its “hidden” treasures. Some think that should include a peek behind the infamous walls of Osama bin Laden’s compound. It makes sense to the deputy head of the tourism office. The threestorey villa is known around the world. Abbottabad is already popular as an alpine escape from the summer

heat. And a museum at the last stand of the al-Qaida leader could mine some long-term cash from the town’s instant brush with notoriety. It’s not a universal view by any stretch. Many want to demolish the building to try to recapture Abbottabad’s ambiance as a quiet corner in a chaotic country. But those contemplating some way to profit from the May 2 raid that killed bin Laden seem to know there is a well-established market for infamy. The Tower of London — and its sometimes role as a prison and execution hall — is one of the city’s main tourist draws. Tours abound for everything from Hollywood tragedies to the trail of the Boston Strangler. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The highs and lows of O Oprah Winfrey’s last show airs today, so what better time to look back at her TV career Forming an empire and defending free speech In 1998, Winfrey forms Oxygen Media, which would spawn the Oxygen cable channel. In the same year, she wins a “food disparagement” case against Texas cattlemen after her comments in a 1996 episode about Mad Cow Disease.

And it was good… Super-Oprah comes into the world on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah gets her start, meets Gayle After three years of anchor news reporting, in 1976, Winfrey hosts the six o’clock news at Baltimore’s WJZ-TV, where she meets future bestie-for-life, Gayle King, who was working there as a production assistant.

Let the lifestyling begin Winfrey expands her reach with O Magazine, which offers advice on personal finance, fitness and spiritual wellness.

The Color Purple Winfrey stars as Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple in 1985 and scores a Best Supporting Actress nod by the Academy Awards.

Paging Dr. Phil Winfrey may be leaving but her self-help posse remains: Dr. Phil debuted in 2002, Rachael Ray in 2006, The Dr. Oz Show in 2009 and The Nate Berkus Show just last year.

The big break Since her move to Chicago in 1983, Winfrey was hosting localized version of what was to become The Oprah Winfrey Show, which first nationally broadcast on September 8th, 1986.

With its themes of adoption and family, Kung Fu Panda 2 was a big hit in the JoliePitt household — and not just because Angelia Jolie is one of the stars of the film. Jolie says her kids connected to the story of Jolie’s character, Tigress, who is shown in an orphanage. Co-star Jack Black, who has two children of his own, says they didn’t quite get their dad’s relationship to the giant panda on screen.“My boys don’t know that I am the panda. I try to explain to them: I am the voice,” he said. “They are like, ‘No. The panda is the panda and you are Da-da.’” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

“You get a car!” On September 12, 2004, Winfrey shocked the audience: by giving each person a Pontiac G6 — 276 in all. In November 2010, she gave away VW Beetles.

The Emmys In 1987, Winfrey gets her first of more than 45 Daytime Emmy Awards that she would collect before removing the show from consideration in 2000.

Tom Cruise gets excited talking about Katie Holmes Remember May 23, 2005? According to the Urban Dictionary “jump the couch” is “a defining moment when you know someone has gone off the deep end.”

The weight struggles Winfrey starts what would become a 20-plus year public discussion about her weight fluctuation with the Diet Dreams Come True episode of November 15, 1988, in which she is a slim size 10.

Opens school in South Africa The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls debuts in January 2, 2007, lauded by humanitarians, and nearly overshadowed when a female employee is later accused of molestation.

The engagement that would last a lifetime In 1992, Oprah Winfrey gets engaged to businessman Stedman Graham — whom she has yet to actually marry.

Denies being gay After years of rumours about her sexuality, and questions about her relationship with friend Gayle King, Winfrey opens up to Barbara Walters in December 2010. “I’m not lesbian. I’m not even kind of lesbian,” she said, soon tearing up while praising King. “She is … the mother I never had. She is … the sister everybody would want.”

The Queen of Daytime and the King of Pop In 1993, it was only Winfrey who could get the pale Michael Jackson to explain that he had not bleached his skin, but that he had skin-pigment disorder known as vitiligo. The Oprah Book Club Oprah Winfrey launches her book club in 1996. More than 60 selections have instantaneously earned a lucky author boatloads of money and an immediate spot on the New York Times’ Best Seller List.

DRUNKS FLOURISH ON THE SILVER SCREEN IN FOCUS RICHARD CROUSE SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

ollywood loves a drunk. Not the self destructive drink-themselves-to-death kind, although Nicholas Cage won an Oscar for playing one of those in Leaving Las Vegas, but the playfully befuddled drinker whose behaviour provides the setup for some intoxicating comedy.

H

W.C. Fields, who once said, “I drink therefore I am,” made a career of playing silly souses and this weekend Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are under the influence again in The Hangover Part II. From John Belushi as Animal House’s boozy beast Blutarsky, who downs an entire bottle of Jack Daniels in one megagulp to Karen Allen, who drinks her way out of a sticky situation in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the movie’s best boozers have been a varied group. There’s the happy

drunk, a smashed stereotype best personified by Dudley Moore in Arthur. Rarely sober, the character stumbles through life with

the aid of his loyal butler and bottles of champagne. When his fiancée Susan (Jill Eikenberry) tells him that “a real woman could stop you from drinking,” he replies, “It’d have to be a real BIG woman.” If Moore was most loveable, then Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa con man in is the least likeable. As a mall Santa who only takes the job to rob the place on Christmas Eve, he drinks, destroys a holiday display and scars an entire crowd of children. Jeff Bridges has played a variety of drunks in his day, most recently in True

Grit and Crazy Heart, but his best known drinker is Jeffrey (The Dude) Lebowski who singlehandedly repopularized the white Russian. As laid-back party monster he drinks nine white Russians during the course of the movie. Of course Hollywood occasionally uncorks a serious look at drinkers. Ray Milland showed the destructive side of boozing in The Lost Weekend, ditto Barfly’s Mickey Rourke but few have brought as much boozy beauty to a role than Elizabeth Taylor as the cantankerous Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

SHE WAS BETRAYED. Lady Gaga admits her new single, Judas, has some very non-biblical origins. "I’ve had a lot of exboyfriends betray me,” she tells MTV. “I began to write a song about an ex-lover who betrayed me, who loved heavy metal music. And then I thought about the biblical implications and how Judas was the betrayer.” Coincidentally, the singer recently announced she’d split with heavy metal drummer Luc Carl, whom she’d also dated and broken up with before hitting it big. “I thought a more liberating way to tackle the message of the song — we attack the idea by saying my ex betrayed me and this person haunts me, but I forgive them,” Gaga says.

Travel in brief The 30th anniversary of Indiana Jones’ big-screen debut is being marked with a new exhibit at the Montreal Science Centre showcasing props from the beloved movies as well as rare real-world artefacts that give patrons a glimpse into the world of archeology.

George Lucas figures he’s working on his third generation of Star Wars fans. And plenty of them were standing in line with their parents Friday to get first crack at Walt Disney World’s overhauled ride based on the iconic movie franchise. The 67-year-old Star Wars creator came to the park to celebrate the reopening of the venerable Star Tours motion simulator ride whose 25-yearold story and visuals have been updated with a digital projection system and 3-D effects. Fact, fiction and fun are melded together in a new exhibit in Montreal’s Old Port which celebrates intrepid archeologist Indiana Jones 30 years after he burst onto the big screen with feats of daring and the crack of a bullwhip. Visitors to Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology at the Montreal Science Centre are welcomed by a bilingual message from no less than Harrison Ford, who brought Indy to life in the movies beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Jones’ fabled leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip are among the first things people see when they walk into the show which has enough props and real relics to tickle the most diehard fan. “We’re using the character of Indiana Jones as an invitation to discover what the world of archeology is today as well as what the world of archeology was in the past,” said Genevieve

Angio-Morneau, one of the show’s creators. The original Raiders remains one of the top-grossing films of all time and was followed by three sequels and a TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. There have also been comic books and video games with the character. Angio-Morneau, a designer and museologist with Montreal’s X3 Productions, says the idea for the show came from Lucasfilm when it saw the success of Indiana Jones and the King-

dom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. “Lucasfilm realized that there was a lot of attention and that he was still very famous, a well-loved character,” she said. “Lucasfilm has all these amazing objects in their archives so I guess they quickly put one and one together and said it’s time to let these objects leave the archives and have them tour the world.” The Hollywood filmmakers found kindred spirits in X3 Productions for the show, which comes as the

The exhibit pays lavish tribute to the movies, with a selection of iconic props including the Ark of the Covenant from the first movie, a life-sized sarcophagus from the Well of Souls and a crystal skeleton from Akator on its throne. The Montreal exhibit is the show’s premiere and after it wraps up on Sept. 18, it will tour in Europe and Asia. Montreal is the only Canadian stop. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Universal rides go high-def UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

Universal Orlando says Spidey will soon go highdef, and lots of “minions will be up to no good in a new attraction themed on the animated movie Despicable Me. The theme park announced plans Thursday to reanimate the iconic Spider-Man ride in digital high-definition. Universal also said it will close its Jimmy Neutron-themed ride this summer and replace it with a 3-D attraction based on Despicable Me, which features minions as not-so-smart sidekicks to the villain Gru. Both revamped attractions will open at the park sometime in 2012, but specific dates have not been announced. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, whose combination of 3-D animation, roving motion vehicles and special effects has made it a crowd favourite for more than a decade, will be updated with the

SYSTEM SWITCH WORKPLACE LAW DANIEL LUBLIN DAN@CANADA EMPLOYMENTLAWYER.COM TWITTER: @DANLUBLIN

Two recent cases define the current state of workplace law in Canada above all others. Both cases have made a drastic impact, and unfortunately both are often misunderstood. When the Supreme Court mostly erased the substantial damages a lower court awarded to Kevin Keays, an assembly line worker at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ont., employers in Canada collectively sighed in relief. According to the court, employers would no longer be responsible for “bad faith” damages based on how they treat their employees. Instead, it declared that employees could sue for mistreatment only if they could prove they actually suffered from harm. Most corporate lawyers leapt on the bandwagon and pronounced bad faith damages all but dead. An employee could be mistreated, they routinely argued, but without evidence of a medical illness, damages would be much more difficult to achieve. That is wrong. In the three years since the Supreme Court released its decision in Keays, low-

er courts have not applied it consistently and sometimes not at all. In one recent appellate case, the court upheld a bad faith damage award, as if the Supreme Court’s decision had never been rendered at all. While the law may have changed, it is possibly only in the name. Similarly, when the Supreme Court ordered Donald Evans to return to work after his employer had already fired him, employers in this country felt they had gone from strength to strength. Employees have a duty to “mitigate” their losses following dismissal and, according to the Supreme Court, this duty includes taking a job with the company that has just fired them. Cognizant of the problems this finding could cause, the court thankfully made several exceptions. If returning to work was humiliating, for example, employees could refuse to return. Since then, companies have routinely relied on this decision in an effort to deny wrongful dismissal claims. Often employees are “invited” back to work, but ironically only after first threatening to sue. Very few judges agree that these invitations are legitimate or that returning to work is a reasonable demand to make. Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, not much has changed. As I usually find with workplace law, the game may be different but the decisions are often the same. DANIEL LUBLIN IS AN EMPLOYMENT LAWYER WITH WHITTEN & LUBLIN LLP.

Dear bosses, be honest SUBMITTED

STUDENT VOICE

What I learned Key take-aways from Heather’s experience:

HEATHER BELLINGHAM TALENTEGG.CA

I was always that kid who knew exactly what she wanted to do: work behind the camera in the film and television industry. I attended Humber College’s Film and Television Production program and graduated with honours. We were warned repeatedly that we were going to be working for free for at least two or three years. I was absolutely prepared to be underemployed. What I was not prepared for was the treatment I would receive. I learned that I had to grow a thick skin, very quickly.

Don’t put up with degrading or possibly illegal behaviour on the part of an employer, and report it to the proper authorities when necessary. If an internship doesn’t pay, make sure it will provide the industry experience and networking opportunities you’ll need to take the next step in your career. Take advantage of the time during which you are unemployed.

Heather Bellingham

Where Heather is now

I decided, after a year of complete unemployment, to go back to school. I just completed a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. It was, by far, one of the better decisions I have made, and I will forever be grateful for the experiences I had there. I now have a wider variety of qualifications, and I’m better prepared for the potential pitfalls of job searching.

I interned at several companies that absolutely guaranteed I would get a job after six months, only to later discover that they had no intention of hiring me. Once I inquired about this “job offer,” they would let me go and look for a new, unpaid intern. When I did manage to get a paying job, which was rare, it was usually an “honorarium,” so I was paid significantly under minimum wage to work full-time. This was not always so bad. Something is better than nothing, after all, and some of the people I worked with were absolutely lovely. However,

many of these were shortlived contract positions. This is in addition to the significant number of job interviews I attended. Without going into detail, I will say that there are a lot of shady people out there, particularly in the film industry, and in some circumstances the “casting couch” story is absolutely true, even for people working behind the camera. Needless to say, some interviews ended abruptly. The main recommendation I would give to employers would be to be completely and totally up front. Just be honest with us. If this unpaid intern-

ship will not lead to a job, tell us. Sometimes the experience is valuable on its own. I have gone to countless interviews where the interviewer started with, “Well, the posting is a bit misleading…” and continued with explaining the actual job, rather than what was posted. If you want a personal assistant, advertise that, not a job that involves working on a project that doesn’t actually exist. If the job is unpaid, do not list the salary as “competitive.” Just be honest. If you are honest, you will build much better working relationships with potential employees. Where social media gets serious Employment lawyers predict that cases of dismissal involving Twitter and Facebook will become common ISTOCK

Manchester United is considering a ban on tweeting after star Wayne Rooney responded to a heckling soccer fan with: “I’ll put u asleep within 10 seconds u little girl. Rocker Courtney Love had to shell out $430,000 US to settle a defamation suit stemming from her illadvised tweets. But those in the public eye aren’t the only ones who should watch what they tweet. Lawyers warn Could a click of the mouse mean the end of your career? CORRECTION: Please note that on May 16, Teresa Kruze’s Turning Point column featured a sidebar that, due to a publication error, was missing the following step: “Put steaks off to the side with no heat. This step should have appeared after, “Sear one minute each side with the lid open.

it probably won’t be long before an unknown Internet user inadvertently becomes a case study in how not to use social media. Lawyers caution that there are real risks in sharing potentially controversial opinions or statements with the world via Twitter, or even in a private network on Facebook.

But they can’t say exactly what kind of statements constitute crossing the line, because Canadian courts haven’t weighed in on the issue — yet. Toronto employment lawyer Stacey Ball isn’t hearing about many claims of wrongful dismissal associated with social media posts gone wrong, but he

expects that will change eventually. “It does happen but you don’t see a lot of it, it’s sort of a very recent phenomenon, says Ball, who is also the author of the industry tome Canadian Employment Law. “But you’re going to see more of this. Under Canadian law, a

non-unionized employee can be fired at any time, for any reason provided they’re given adequate notice or pay in lieu. But an oft-cited 1967 Ontario Court of Appeal ruling provides grounds for an employer to terminate without compensation. “If an employee has been guilty of serious misconduct, habitual neglect of duty, incompetence, or conduct incompatible with his duties, or prejudicial to the employer’s business, or if he has been guilty of wilful disobedience to the employer’s orders in a matter of substance, the law recognizes the employer’s right summarily to dismiss the delinquent employee, reads the decision. Ball says he would be fascinated to see Damian Goddard’s case tested by law. Goddard landed in hot water last week after

retweeting a comment by Twitter user @Uptownhockey, an account for Burlington, Ont.-based Uptown Sports Management, which stated: “Very sad to read Sean Avery’s misguided support of same-gender ‘marriage.’ Legal or not, it will always be wrong. In his own tweet, Goddard wrote: “I completely and whole-heartedly support (Uptown’s) Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage. A firestorm of criticism followed and it didn’t take long for Goddard’s employer, Rogers Sportsnet, to distance itself from his comments. The following day, the company released a statement announcing that Goddard was being let go, for reasons not necessarily connected to his Twitter account. THE CANADIAN PRESS

No snow days?

Could the advent of the Internet mean the end of sudden, snow-covered days off for young students?

ISTOCK

Could the Internet mean the end of snow days? Some schools think so, and they are experimenting with ways for students to do lessons online during bad weather, potentially allowing classes to go on during even the worst blizzard. “Virtual snow days would help ease pressure on school calendars. Because districts are required to be in session for a certain number of hours or days, losing teaching time to winter weather can mean extending the school day or cutting short spring break or summer vacation. And cancelling school in the winter, when some of the most difficult material of the year is covered, risks leaving students with a learning deficit heading into the spring, when many states administer standardized tests. “Even if you can't continue on at the same pace, being able to keep students

The busses aren’t running? No problem!

on track can make a huge difference, said Doug Levin, executive director of the non-profit State Educational Technology Directors Association. Virtual learning, which has been widely used by colleges and universities for years, is becoming more viable for younger students as teachers and administrators grow comfortable with the technology. Online learning also saves money because districts don't have to pay for transportation, electricity and custodians. But there are obstacles, too. Many families don't have Internet access with speeds that would support

complex classroom-style work, especially in rural areas and impoverished inner cities. Families with multiple children - without multiple computers - could be hard-pressed to keep up. And some people say kids just need an occasional extra day off in the depths of winter. “When deep snow falls, the world becomes quiet and still. And if we listen to our instincts, we settle in and enjoy the pure joy of not doing, David Santner wrote on the website for the Poughkeepsie Day School in New York. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Rafael Nadal excelled when he needed to most, winning the final two sets against John Isner yesterday to advance to the second round at the French Open with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4 victory. The five-time champion, who is now 39-1 at Roland Garros, played a five-set match at the tourney for the first time in seven visits. “Tough, tough moments for me,” Nadal said. “I played too nervous, in my opinion.” The No. 1-seeded Nadal is trying to equal Bjorn Borg’s record of six French Open titles. Down 3-2 to the Bruins in the Eastern Conference finals, coach Guy Boucher said Roloson is “the guy that took us here,” so he’ll be in net for Game 6 when the Lightning try to even the best-of-seven series tonight. ry away from their first Stanley Cup appearance in 21 years after beating Roloson’s backup, Mike Smith,

in Game 5. Boucher opted to give Smith his first career playoff start after pulling Roloson from two of the previous three games against the Bruins, saying he felt the veteran whose acquisition in January was critical to Tampa Bay’s turnaround season needed a “breather.” Although Smith was solid during Monday night’s 3-1 loss, Boucher sounded as though it was an easy de-

cision to go back to Roloson. “This is a perfect situation. He’s going to be the only rested guy in the two teams,” Boucher said yesterday, noting Roloson has responded well to breaks this season. “He’s one of the hardest working guys on our team. He puts in a lot of hours and a lot of time,” the Lightning coach added. “And he’s like everybody else, at some point or an-

other just needs to breathe a little bit.” Smith shut down Boston after Roloson fell behind 30 in the opening period of Game 4, giving Tampa Bay a chance to rally for a 5-3 victory. He stopped 17-of19 shots Monday night, with the Bruins adding an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. A Lightning victory sends the series back to Boston for Game 7 on Friday night. Aching Tiger may miss U.S. Open primer Tiger Woods says he’ll be ready to go for the U.S. Open. Good thing for Woods there’s time to get healthy. The golfing great hasn’t hit a ball in about two weeks. Woods needs crutches and a walking boot for relief on his aching left leg. He won’t even start leg training until the end of next week.

“There’s a difference between being in pain and being injured.” TIGER WOODS

But Woods expects to tee off at the U.S. Open June 1619 in Bethesda, Md. “You just play through these things,” Woods said. He is bothered by pain in his left knee, left Achilles tendon, tightening in his

calf, and has a sore lower back. Woods says doctors have not mentioned leg surgery. But he doubts he’ll play the Memorial next week in Dublin, Ohio. How Woods’ leg responds when he starts train-

ing next week will determine when he can start hitting balls again — all but ruling out the Memorial. That means Woods would go to the U.S. Open with little competition. “I’ve had four surgeries on it,” Woods said. “Obviously, it’s not what it was when I was little.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Fuel-economy

Two sturdy styles

Traction

The fuel-economy issue is crucial since all other Land Rover/Range Rover models are inherently thirsty beasts. For example, the best that either the V8-powered Range Rover or its Range Rover Sport relation can muster is 17.3 l/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Although the Evoque’s actual numbers have yet to be published, its 240horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, sourced from Ford, will be a relative gas miser.

When ogling the attractive two- and fourdoor body styles, it’s difficult to believe that the Evoque is the real deal when tackling the kind of off-road terrain that made its iconic ancestors so desirable. With its short front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, the odds of becoming hung up on uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog would seem remote.

Traction is supplied by a full-time allwheel-drive system with an electronically controlled centre differential that varies torque between the front and rear wheels depending on where the grip is greatest. The Evoque’s underpinnings can be supplemented with an adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option that offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride.

“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and

boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s

steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable endurance. Although the Evoque arrives this fall in multi-terrain-capable condition, high style at a good price is where this Range Rover really shines.

The Evoque appears more like a sport wagon derivative of a compact passenger car, especially in two-door livery. It’s slightly shorter than a Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, or Jeep Patriot and about 45 centimetres shorter than a Range Rover Sport. As well, with its steeply

raked windshield and tapered roofline, it can also lay claim to being one of the slinkiest, wind-cheating-est rigs around. With a starting price in the $50,000 range, the Evoque should provoke fresh patrons to consider a Range Rover to carry them down a decidedly different path.

HAPPINESS IS NEW, BIG, SHINY WHEELS AUTO PILOT MIKE GOETZ DRIVE @METRONEWS.CA

W

hat’s the most efficient way to both beatify your vehicle and upgrade its performance? Simple. Get out of the car and let someone else drive... someone who’s better looking and a faster driver. If that’s not going to work for you, consider the second-best option — a new set of wheels and tires. A well-chosen set of alloy rims fitted with aggressive tires looks awesome. And because they are lighter, stronger, and put

more and stiffer rubber on the road than your stock pieces, your vehicle’s handling dynamics will substantially improve as well. It’s a no-brainer. But before you jump in the pool, may we suggest these safety tips, gleamed from our conversation with Param Johl, owner and operator of Megawheelz in Mississauga, Ont., (megawheelz.com). Megawheelz stocks over 5,000 wheels at any given time. The staff sees a lot of wheel consumers, from serious customizers, to those contemplating their first wheel upgrade. When they see those in the latter group, staff often start the consultation process with a reality check. Johl notes that 20inch and larger wheels are certainly in vogue and captivating, but that doesn’t mean they should go on everything, particularly smaller cars.

ing a show car, or a hobby “People see these large car for occasional preening rims on the SUVs and around the ‘hood, forget trucks of their buddies and about “Dub” wheels. (Dub want them for their became the famous short vehicles too ... but if they form of “double dime,” a have a small car, we have cooler way of referring to to explain that it is just not tires that are 20 inches or going to work for them.” larger.) For one thing, a small For a car will need sheet metal and other modifications to accommodate 20-inchers. For another, huge rims necessitate extremely low profile tires, and that combination, while visually overthe-top, means the vehicle will ride daihard — very Concept One's new Executive wheel line is designed for hard — like you’re luxury cars, and features a riding on wheels of chrome stainless steel lip. concrete. So unless you’re build-

ly driver, Johl suggests “plus one” or “plus two” sizing. For a vehicle that comes stock with 15-inch wheels, that means upgrading to 16-inch or 17-inch wheel/tire sets. The rims are bigger and more beautiful, but by fitting them with tires with shorter sidewalls (called low-profile tires), the new tire is able to retain the same diameter as the original one. This is crucial, because over-sized wheels/tires can cause problems with suspension travel, and various computer systems for braking, shifting and instrumentation. There is a bewildering array of wheel designs out there. While the big brands, (American Racing, Foose, O.Z., etc.) continue to set the fashion pace, many smaller brands have

entered the market, offering cheaper takes on hit designs and cool designs of their own. Many websites have 3-D configurators, so you can visualize your ride with all the possibilities. Johl noted that matte, anodized and painted finishes are currently popular. But he adds that the king of bling, chrome, continues to have its fans, even though the chroming process adds considerable weight to an alloy wheel. A good quality alloy wheel set, with good quality rubber, from a reputable and professional wheel shop, will set you back about $1,100 to $1,200. You can pay more of course, or less. Like your choice of design, it’s all up to you. Express yourself. Then roll slowly through the neighbourhood, with the window down and a face that says, “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.”
