Dancers bring moves to Summer Fling fest
The Summer Fling theatre festival will add dance to its program of 10 shows at seven venues in the downtown Rideau area from July 13 to Aug. 27. Three male dancers, including Yvon Soglo, will put on a series of dance performances in late August. Other shows will include Kathleen Clark’s comedy Secrets of a Soccer Mom, Shakespeare’s Othello and Agatha Christie’s murder mystery A Spider’s Web. For more coverage, go to metronews.ca/ottawa.
Canada has imposed economic sanctions against Syria in response to the Middle East country’s violent suppression of anti-government protesters. In announcing the measures yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird called the Syrian regime’s actions a grave breach of international peace. The minister said the measures — effective immediately — are intended to target Syrian rulers, not the people. “We are taking these actions because of the regime’s steadfast and continued refusal to end its violent repression of peaceful demonstrators and the threat this poses to the region,” Baird said in his first public act as Canadian foreign minister. “This abhorrent crackdown

must end.” The measures are largely symbolic because Canada exports only about $60 million annually to Syria, and receives less than a tenth of that in imports. Human-rights groups estimate as many as 1,000 Syrians have been killed in two months of protests. The United States and the European Union have already imposed sanctions on President Bashar Assad and other ministers in the repressive country. THE CANADIAN PRESS

It will be three years in September since Maisy Odjick went missing and her mother Laurie says the hardest part is not knowing where she is. “There’s no closure. There haven’t been any tips for a very long time, said Odjick. To help families like the Odjicks, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) launched a new website yesterday, MissingKids.ca, as a tool to better locate missing children. Parents can now register their missing child on the site and request support from a trained caseworker as the search develops. “We were using oldschool methods to search for missing kids, said Lianna McDonald, executive director of the CCCP. McDonald expects the website will redefine how people search for missing children by tying in social media tools in today’s connected society.

Voting for accessibility

Tourism grad wants public’s help to secure funding for a website that would rank accessibility of landmarks JOE LOFARO
@METRONEWS.CA
Rachelle Marois wants buildings in Ottawa to be more accessible for her and others with mobility issues and she’s reaching out to the community to make that a reality. She entered the Pepsi Refresh Project contest in order to attract funding to launch a social media website that would rate how accessible tourist draws are. “I think that businesses in the travel and tourism industry are losing potential clients and cash flow because people aren’t aware
of how accessible they are,” said Marois, a graduate of La Cité Collégiale’s Travel and Tourism program. “It’s very simple. Why it’s not being done, I don’t know.” Marois, who uses a wheelchair to get around, is hoping to get enough votes to receive a $5,000 grant to help launch the website. She envisions an interactive tool where people can add

notes, rankings, photos and videos. Marois said the website could also remind people facilities are in fact accessible when they might think otherwise. “I want to educate the public and especially business owners,” said Marois. Currently, the initiative sits at number 50 in the
Arts and Culture category, and people can place their votes until the end of June. She believes the site could expand nationally. “I think it has very good potential and it could help a whole bunch of people. Not just people with disabilities, but it could help moms with strollers or the elderly,” she said.
Festival-goers in Ontario will soon be allowed to wander around more freely with an alcoholic drink in hand — a change the man behind Ottawa Bluesfest says is “long overdue.” “I think the notion that we have to have more regulation is not really appropriate anymore,” said Bluesfest executive and artistic director Mark Monahan. “One of the problems with having a beer tent is that people would go there specifically to drink, and it would encourage binge drinking.” Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley said he is planning to loosen liquor laws in time for this year’s summer festivals. People will still only be able to drink in a “defined area,” but will have more room to move and will be allowed to shop at the same time, he said. Bluesfest organizers
Mark Monahan
have always made sure their licensed areas are large and near the music, so the only change will be that retailers will be able to sell wares in the same areas where people can drink, Monahan said. Neither the details of the liquor law changes nor the date when they take effect have been announced. Even if the changes are made, municipalities and police will still have the right to say no, Bentley said. The province also intends to keep enforcing “responsible behaviour.” JESSICA SMITH/ WITH FILES FROM THE CANADIAN PRESS

Compromises pledged U.S. Congress gives Israeli PM standing ovations days after his dustup with Barack Obama Netanyahu rejects ‘indefensible’ pre-1967 borders Borders Israel, which enjoys strong bipartisan backing in U.S. Congress, has been rattled by President Barack Obama’s support for drawing the future borders of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state on the basis of Israel’s pre-‘67 war frontiers. Benjamin Netanyahu has challenged Obama’s position repeatedly, ignoring Obama’s assertion that the territorial markers could be adjusted through agreed land swaps. The Palestinians accept that principle. In his speech before Congress, Netanyahu backed off from his dispute with Obama.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged yesterday to make “painful compromises” for peace with the Palestinians, for the first time explicitly saying that some West Bank settlements would find themselves outside Israel’s final borders. He also tacked on a list of often-stated conditions that have been unacceptable to the Palestinians.
‘Declaration of war’ Palestinian officials said the Israeli prime minister’s parameters for a peace deal fell far short
Speaking before a warmly receptive joint meeting of the U.S. Congress, Netanyahu said Israel wants and needs peace. But he repeated his flat rejection of a return to what he called the “indefensible” borders that Israel had before the 1967 Middle East war. He also restated Israel’s refusal to repatriate milof what is needed to resume negotiations. Nabil Shaath, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on keeping key parts of the territories the

Netanyahu also maintained anew that contested Jerusalem could not be shared with the Palestinians, who want the eastern sector of the holy city as capital of their hoped-for state. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Palestinians want for their state is a “declaration of war against the Palestinians.” The Islamic militant Hamas and Netanyahu’s parliamentary opposition also expressed criticism. Frantic search for twister survivors MARIO TAMA/GETTY IMAGES
The massive tornado that tore through Joplin, Mo., is now officially the deadliest single twister in the U.S. in nearly six decades with a death toll of at least 122. City manager Mark Rohr said yesterday that more than 750 people were injured. Nine people also have been recovered from debris. Crews, taking advantage of the best weather they have had in two days,
busted holes in concrete slabs and sifted through strewn home goods yesterday as rescuers focused on crumpled megastores and apartment complexes in a frantic search for more survivors. One team poked through the remains of a home improvement store, while others searched a Wal-Mart and wrecked apartments as the clock ticked down on another round of severe storms.

A hunt through the rubble using search-andrescue dogs was planned, and officials expected to test the city’s nine warning sirens while the sun was still shining. The Storm Prediction Center warned of severe weather starting yesterday afternoon in the central U.S. Meteorologist David Imy said conditions were ripe for more tornadoes. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Devastating storm The twister that hit Joplin on Sunday is the deadliest single tornado since the National Weather Service began keeping official records in 1950. It’s the 8th deadliest single twister in U.S. history. The last tornado this deadly hit Flint, Mich., in 1953, killing 116.

Travel schedules turn to ashes Erupting Iceland volcano grounds flights — again But no mishap as defiant budget airline takes off SCOTT HEPPELL/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Ash spewing from an Icelandic volcano is bringing disruption and uncertainty to European air travel. Despite claims of a massive over-reaction, hundreds of flights were cancelled yesterday as winds blew the cloud of ash from the Grimsvotn volcano over Scotland and other parts of Europe. Experts say particles in the ash could stall jet engines. Officials in Germany said dozens of flights would be grounded today. The only comfort for frustrated passengers and airlines is that officials in Iceland said the amount of ash being released by the volcano was decreasing. The officials don’t ex-
Mystery videos spark sex scandal Graphic black-and-white videos have sparked a sex scandal in Turkey. They appear to show senior members of an opposition party in liaisons with women who are not their wives. The video spies did not just rig hidden cameras. They posted taunting screen text, a soundtrack and even an adults-only rating before slapping the footage on the Internet. The scandal could benefit the government in elections next month. If the opposition party, known by its Turkish acronym MHP, falls below a vote threshold of 10 per cent on June 12, it will lose a place in parliament. The mysterious group behind the videos urged the ouster of the MHP leadership. “If you have at least a little bit of shame … you should all resign,” said an on-screen message. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Although British authorities said concentrations of ash in the skies over Scotland were too high to fly through, Irish budget airline Ryanair challenged the results, saying it had sent its own airplane into Scottish airspace and found no ash in the atmosphere. “We encountered absolutely no problems,” said Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary. “There's no cloud over Scotland. Along the way, Obama and his wife Michelle cemented their friendship with the 85-year-old Queen. A 41-gun salute at the palace, a grand ceremony
private luncheon and meeting with newlyweds Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, was followed by a glitzy state dinner, only the second Britain has ever thrown for a U.S. president. In toasting Queen Elizabeth II, Obama called her “a living witness to the power of our alliance and a chief source of its resilience.” The Queen said the relationship
between the two countries is “tried, tested and, yes, special.” Following the gift-giving tradition, the Obamas gave the Queen a selection of memorabilia and photographs from her parents’ 1939 visit to the United States. The Queen gave the president a collection of letters from the Royal Archives and Michelle an
antique brooch. As the Obamas bonded with the Queen, there was a parallel effort to build ties with British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose help Obama will need on an array of issues. Today, Obama will delve into foreign policy with Cameron and address British Parliament. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Chrysler driving its way out of big government debt Company pays off most of loans, but Ottawa still holds stake Five new products launched in Ontario recently High interest has added up with billions still owed Chrysler Group has paid off most of the bailout money it owed to the Canadian, Ontario and U.S. governments after they rescued the automaker from the brink of financial ruin two years ago. Chrysler returned $7.6 billion, including $1.8 billion in high-cost interest, yesterday, a major step forward after the company filed for bankruptcy at the height of the recession. Chrysler said it has retired its original loans six years ahead of schedule. The loan repayment came after the company sold bonds last week and took out a bank loan at a
lower interest rate. As part of the deal, Chrysler agreed to maintain about 20 per cent of its North American production in Ontario, where some 9,000 employees work at plants in Etobicoke, Windsor and Brampton as well as dealerships. News that the automaker had made good on its loan yesterday was celebrated by the provincial government and unions. “I think it’s fair to say Chrysler Fiat’s on a roll as far as Ontario’s concerned,” said Sandra Pupatello, the province’s minister of economic development and trade.
Comeback Chrysler has paid the U.S. $6.5 billion and the EDC $2 billion. Another $2.6 billion from the original loans was not drawn and has been cancelled. The company still owes the governments billions and all three governments continue to hold an equity stake in the automaker. The Canadian government still owns 1.5 per cent of the company.

Battle of e-readers heats up
The lighter, slimmer, cheaper new version of Barnes and Noble’s e-reader has a black-and-white touch screen and aims squarely at the “grandma” demographic — or at least those craving a simpler ebook reader. The focus on simplicity means the new Nook’s battery can last two months, CEO William Lynch said at an event in New York to announce the device. Lynch told the crowd of bloggers, news media and analysts the latest Nook was inspired by feedback from customers — specifically a letter asking why no e-readers were suitable

for a grandma. The new Nook, to be available June 10, is Wi-Fi only, has a six-inch touch screen and can hold up to 1,000 digital books. It features the latest E Ink technology, which significantly minimizes flashing that can occur as a user pages through an e-book. Pages seem to melt into each other on the new Nook. Barnes & Noble Inc. executives said the new device lets readers look up words, highlight passages,
search and adjust font size. It weighs 7.5 ounces, 35 per cent less than the first Nook, which launched a year and a half ago. The iPad 2 weighs more than 1.3 pounds. The newest Kindle is almost as light, at 8.5 ounces, but holds more than three times as many books as the new Nook. Amazon, meanwhile, dropped the price of its Kindle last month by $25 US to $114. JUST SAYIN’ ...
You would think Harold Camping would know when to shut up already. Camping is the 89-year-old PAUL SULLIVAN evangelist from Oakland, METRO Calif., who managed to convince a lot of gullible people that the world was coming to an end Saturday (and it would have spoiled a long weekend, too). Then, as Saturday dawned on Business as Usual, Camping compounded his cuckoo quotient by claiming it was a mathematical error and the real end of the world is still coming Oct. 21. Those people who sold all their worldly possessions to prepare for Apocalypse Now are stuck and will have to make it until Oct. 21 with just the clothes on their backs until they are saved, or taken up, or whatever. Camping tried this trick before in 1994 and it didn’t work then either. Same problem — mathematical error. Camping may be one heck of a preacher, but he should “(Harold) consider remedial math. Still, it’s hard to blame Camping tried Camping. He’s a fire and this trick before brimstone evangelist who in 1994 and it predicts the end of the didn’t work then world. It comes with the job description. When either. Same you’re a hammer, problem — everything looks like a nail. When you’re a doomsayer, mathematical everything looks like doom. error. Camping And we in the media are may be one heck complicit, promoting of a preacher, Camping’s Grand Delusion with unseemly glee, but he should lending credence to an old consider man’s lunatic ravings. remedial math.” As a story, it’s been just too much fun to pass up. And I’m sure I wasn’t alone as I opened my eyes Saturday morning and looked around with just a touch of smug relief. Still here. Cautionary note: Just because it’s a bunch of baloney doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. Stars explode every day; asteroids plow into planets. And come Oct. 21, we could be the victims of a cataclysmic coincidence, and there is Camping saying “I told you so” as he gets taken up. “Next time, you’ll listen. Oops, my bad. There is no next time.” The truth is (and I can’t believe I need to say this) whatever does or does not happen to the world Oct. 21 will have nothing to do with some old guy from Oakland. There are 170-billion galaxies in the known universe and each galaxy has between 200-billion and 400-billion stars. It’s more than a little difficult to believe that God will point a big old finger at the tiny third planet circling around one of those 400-billion stars and say “That’s it, folks. Rapture time!” She is simply too busy to correct Harold Camping’s bad math. Hallelujah, I say.

Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning ASUNCION, Paraguay. The Asuncion zoo is desperately seeking a mate for Coco, the last known male of his species left in Paraguay. Coco is an endangered hyacinth macaw, known in Paraguayan Spanish as a “papagayo azul.” Scientists estimated several years ago that only 6,500 were left in the wild, mostly in an area of neighbouring Brazil that is quickly losing natural habitat for the birds. Capturing and exporting the Macaws is illegal and Coco was sent to the zoo eight years ago after authorities broke up a gang of animal traffickers. Only recently did a DNA test show he is male, zoo veterinarian Cristiane Rainner said. To avoid mixing species, the zoo has had to keep him apart from other Macaws, which has left him lonely and a bit bored, Rainner said. “He’s quite sociable, although he’s only learned to say ‘hello.’ But when he hears the cumbia he dances,” Rainner said. “The hyacinth macaw is a beauty, but if it doesn’t reproduce, that’ll be it. Coco is a male and his life expectancy is 80 years.”

Stealth chopper at night is optional The official tourist map for Abbottabad, Pakistan, urges visitors to discover its “hidden” treasures. Some think that should include a peek behind the infamous walls of Osama bin Laden’s compound. It makes sense to the deputy head of the tourism office. The threestorey villa is known around the world. Abbottabad is already popular as an alpine escape from the summer
heat. And a museum at the last stand of the al-Qaida leader could mine some long-term cash from the town’s instant brush with notoriety. It’s not a universal view by any stretch. Many want to demolish the building to try to recapture Abbottabad’s ambiance as a quiet corner in a chaotic country. But those contemplating some way to profit from the May 2 raid that killed bin Laden seem to know there is a well-established market for infamy. The Tower of London — and its sometimes role as a prison and execution hall — is one of the city’s main tourist draws. Tours abound for everything from Hollywood tragedies to the trail of the Boston Strangler. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The highs and lows of O Oprah Winfrey’s last show airs today so what better time to look back at her TV career And it was good… Super-Oprah comes into the world on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah gets her start, meets Gayle After three years of anchor news reporting, in 1976, Winfrey hosts the six o’clock news at Baltimore’s WJZ-TV, where she meets future bestie-for-life, Gayle King, who was working there as a production assistant.
Forming an empire and defending free speech In 1998, Winfrey forms Oxygen Media, which would spawn the Oxygen cable channel. In the same year, she wins a “food disparagement” case against Texas cattlemen after her comments in a 1996 episode about Mad Cow Disease. Let the lifestyling begin Winfrey expands her reach with O Magazine, which offers advice on personal finance, fitness and spiritual wellness.
The Color Purple Winfrey stars as Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple in 1985 and scores a Best Supporting Actress nod by the Academy Awards.
Paging Dr. Phil Winfrey may be leaving but her self-help posse remains: Dr. Phil debuted in 2002, Rachael Ray in 2006, The Dr. Oz Show in 2009 and The Nate Berkus Show just last year.
The big break Since her move to Chicago in 1983, Winfrey was hosting localized version of what was to become The Oprah Winfrey Show, which first nationally broadcast on September 8th, 1986.
“You get a car!” On September 12, 2004, Winfrey shocked the audience: Each one of those lucky, well-deserving, loyal jerks got a Pontiac G6 — 276 in all.In November 2010, she gave away VW Beetles.

The engagement that would last a lifetime In 1992, Oprah Winfrey gets engaged to businessman Stedman Graham — whom she has yet to actually marry.
Denies being gay After years of dogged rumours about her sexuality, and questions about her relationship with friend Gayle King, Winfrey opens up to Barbara Walters in December 2010. “I’m not lesbian. I’m not even kind of lesbian,” she said, soon tearing up while praising King. “She is … the mother I never had. She is … the sister everybody would want.”
The Queen of Daytime and the King of Pop In 1993, it was only Winfrey who could get the pale Michael Jackson to explain that he had not bleached his skin, but that he had skin-pigment disorder known as vitiligo. This was to become one of her highest rated episodes, with 62 million viewers watching. The Oprah Book Club Oprah Winfrey launches her book club in 1996. Maria Shriver was reportedly so enraged after learning about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s illegitimate child that she instructed her team to leak word of it to the press, according to TMZ. And apparently Shriver initially wanted to hold a press conference to unveil the scandal, but, “Maria’s friends talked her off a ledge and a plan was eventually hatched to leak the details to the L.A. Times and TMZ,” a source says. Shriver reportedly didn’t learn about the full extent of her husband’s indiscretions until late April or early May, days before the news went public.

Travel in brief The 30th anniversary of Indiana Jones’ big-screen debut is being marked with a new exhibit at the Montreal Science Centre showcasing props from the beloved movies as well as rare real-world artefacts that give patrons a glimpse into the world of archeology.

Fact, fiction and fun are melded together in a new exhibit in Montreal’s Old Port which celebrates intrepid archeologist Indiana Jones 30 years after he burst onto the big screen with feats of daring and the crack of a bullwhip. Visitors to Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology at the Montreal Science Centre are welcomed by a bilingual message from no less than Harrison Ford, who brought Indy to life in the movies beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Jones’ fabled leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip are among the first things people see when they walk into the show which has enough props and real relics to tickle the most diehard fan. “We’re using the character of Indiana Jones as an invitation to discover what the world of archeology is today as well as what the world of archeology was in the past,” said Genevieve

Angio-Morneau, one of the show’s creators. The original Raiders remains one of the top-grossing films of all time and was followed by three sequels and a TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. There have also been comic books and video games with the character. Angio-Morneau, a designer and museologist with Montreal’s X3 Productions, says the idea for the show came from Lucasfilm when it saw the success of Indiana Jones and the King-
dom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. “Lucasfilm realized that there was a lot of attention and that he was still very famous, a well-loved character,” she said. “Lucasfilm has all these amazing objects in their archives so I guess they quickly put one and one together and said it’s time to let these objects leave the archives and have them tour the world.” The Hollywood filmmakers found kindred spirits in X3 Productions for the show, which comes as the

film franchise marks its 30th anniversary. The exhibit pays lavish tribute to the movies, with a selection of iconic props including the Ark of the Covenant from the first movie, a life-sized sarcophagus from the Well of Souls and a crystal skeleton from Akator on its throne. The Montreal exhibit is the show’s premiere and after it wraps up on Sept. 18, it will tour in Europe and Asia. Montreal is the only Canadian stop. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Universal Orlando says Spidey will soon go highdef, and lots of “minions will be up to no good in a new attraction themed on the animated movie Despicable Me. The theme park announced plans Thursday to reanimate the iconic Spider-Man ride in digital high-definition. Universal also said it will close its Jimmy Neutron-themed ride this summer and replace it with a 3-D attraction based on Despicable Me, which features minions as not-so-smart sidekicks to the villain Gru. Both revamped attractions will open at the park sometime in 2012, but specific dates have not been announced. Must-see local museums ADRIAN WYLD/THE CANADIAN PRESS
Ottawa’s museums are some of the finest in the world Here are three top picks for a family outing PETER DOYLE
LIFE@METRONEWS.CA
The National Capital Region boasts several of the world’s finest museums. Three are particularly well suited to family visits, and all offer free admission on Thursday evenings. The Canadian Museum of Civilization
Located in Gatineau, directly across the Ottawa River from Parliament Hill, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is a unique treasure. The building itself features a remarkable flowing design with rounded edges and plenty of windows. Inside, a permanent exhibit traces the story of Canadian civilization from its first peoples through to the modern era. The museum’s centrepiece, the Grand Hall, is devoted to the Aboriginal peoples of the Pacific Northwest. A current exhibit well worth a visit describes the Arctic Expedition of 19131918, one of the first attempts to gather information about Canada’s vast northern lands. A new exhibit, “Japan:
hibits personalize the war experience by telling the stories of soldiers and civilians alike. Missing Lives is a current exhibit well worth a visit. Focusing on conflicts during the 1990s in what was then Yugoslavia, the exhibit traces the stories of 15 families through photographs and narration. Be sure to leave plenty of time to explore LeBreton Gallery’s massive display of military vehicles and hardware: tanks, armoured personnel carriers, rockets, even a fighter jet.
The Canadian War Museum
This museum remains a family favourite, particularly since a massive renovation project was completed in 2010. Located downtown in a historic building that once hosted Parliament after the fire of 1916, the museum’s collection includes fossils, a bird gallery and the complete skeleton of a blue whale, along with dinosaurs and spiders. There are lots of handson activities for kids and adults alike. Family admission is $25.
This museum is another great place to take the whole family and also offers a group rate of $30. Opened in 2005, Canada’s newest national museum is also an architectural marvel with a spectacular setting on the Ottawa River. The museum traces the story of armed conflict both in Canada and abroad, from the European conquest and both World Wars to peacekeeping missions and Afghanistan. Ex-

Cycling the Rideau Canal TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
This route along the scenic Ottawa River can easily be done in less than an hour But it makes a great all-day outing for the whole family PETER DOYLE
LIFE@METRONEWS.CA
The paved recreational paths that run alongside the canal make for flat, easy riding.
There may be no better family outing in the National Capital Region than a cycle along the Rideau Canal. The paved recreational paths that run alongside the canal from Dow’s Lake to the Ottawa River make for flat, easy riding; a series of interpretive panels along the way tell the story of the canal, while several water fountains will help keep thirst at bay. A favourite outing begins at Hog’s Back Park, where the canal splits off from the Rideau River and flows toward the Ottawa River, approximately eight kilometres away. The park offers free parking, a can-
teen and rest rooms. A quick walking tour of spectacular Hog’s Back Falls is a must. A short bike ride takes you to the first of the dozen locks on the route. Each lock is a basin that can be filled and emptied through a system of sluice gates, enabling boats to bypass the Rideau River’s numerous rapids. Opened in 1832, this is the oldest continuously operating canal system in North America. The summer months attract a steady stream of boats to the canal, and kids of all ages love to watch the boats rise as the lock fills with water. Afterward, cross over the canal and hop back on your bikes for the short ride to Dow’s Lake.
Created during the construction of the canal, Dow’s Lake was once a massive swamp. Today, it is a popular spot for visitors and the adjacent arboretum is perfect for picnics. A pavilion on the lake features restaurants and rentals of canoes, kayaks and pedal boats. From there, the path runs directly alongside the canal and through fashionable neighbourhoods such as the Glebe and the Golden Triangle. You’ll cycle past many gorgeous gardens and stately homes, and ride under the historic Pretoria Bridge. A short while later, you’ll reach the Bytown Museum — the turnaround point. Housed in Ottawa’s oldest stone

building (completed in 1827), the museum honours John By, the British Colonel who supervised the canal’s construction. The museum is a great place to get off the bikes for a spell. For lunch, you can picnic along the waterfront, or try one of the many good restaurants in the nearby Bytown Market. Before heading back, stop at Piccolo Grande for the best gelato in town. Then it’s back on the bikes for the return ride along the other side of the canal.

“No matter where you live in Canada, a day on the trails can be an inexpensive family-bonding adventure,” said Jennifer Hicks, columnist of mommy blog urbanmoms.ca and mother of three. Hicks recommends tctrail.ca, an online resource detailing the 400 cross-country nature-rich trails that comprise the Trans Canada Trail. Avoid the hat dance
“As a mom, I know getting youngsters to keep their sun-protecting hats on can be a struggle,” said Victoria Kirk, Old Navy spokesperson. To help avoid what she calls the “hat dance,” Kirk advises allowing kids to pick their favourite topper. Choose from a family assortment including stylish wide brim, baby chin-strap and colourful ball hats. Family-friendly sunscreen
“I use sunscreen liberally
Summer adventure begins with chemical-free sun protection, protein-rich snacks and games for the kids.
on my kids and I’m very conscious that what goes on, goes into the body,” said Hicks, who recommends a chemical–free SPF that’s safe for the family. Snack smart
According to registered dietician Fran Berkoff, energy bars higher in carbohydrates give you an energy boost, while those
higher in protein keep you fuller, longer. Outdoor fun
To avoid “are we there yet?” and create some memories on the trail, Hicks goes prepared. “The kids and I love to make a stress-free pre-road trip pit stop to grab inexpensive, fun toys like soccer balls, rackets and games.” NEWSCANADA.COM

Two recent cases define the current state of workplace law in Canada above all others. Both cases have made a drastic impact, and unfortunately both are often misunderstood. When the Supreme Court mostly erased the substantial damages a lower court awarded to Kevin Keays, an assembly line worker at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ont., employers in Canada collectively sighed in relief. According to the court, employers would no longer be responsible for “bad faith” damages based on how they treat their employees. Instead, it declared that employees could sue for mistreatment only if they could prove they actually suffered from harm. Most corporate lawyers leapt on the bandwagon and pronounced bad faith damages all but dead. An employee could be mistreated, they routinely argued, but without evidence of a medical illness, damages would be much more difficult to achieve. That is wrong. In the three years since the Supreme Court released its decision in Keays, low-

What I learned Key take-aways from Heather’s experience:
HEATHER BELLINGHAM TALENTEGG.CA
I attended Humber College’s Film and Television Production program and graduated with honours. We were warned repeatedly that we were going to be working for free for at least two or three years. I was absolutely prepared to be underemployed. What I was not prepared for was the treatment I would receive. I interned at several companies that absolutely guaranteed I would get a job after six months, only to later discover that they had no intention of hiring me. Once I inquired about this “job offer,” they would let me go and look for a new, unpaid intern. When I did manage to get a paying job, which was rare, it was usually an “honorarium,” so I was paid significantly under minimum wage to work full-time. Without going into detail, I will say that there are a lot of shady people out there, particularly in the film industry, and in some circumstances the “casting

couch” story is absolutely true, even for people working behind the camera. The main recommendation I would give to employers would be to be completely and totally up front. Just be honest with us. If this unpaid internship will not lead to a job, tell us. Sometimes the experience is valuable on its own. If you want a personal assistant, advertise that, not a job that involves working on a project that doesn’t actually exist. If the job is unpaid, do not list the salary as “competitive.” If you are honest, you will build much better working relationships. ough. It was, by far, one of the better decisions I have made, and I will forever be grateful for the experiences I had there. I now have a wider variety of qualifications, and I’m better prepared for the potential pitfalls of job searching.

WORKPLACE LAW
er courts have not applied it consistently and sometimes not at all. In one recent appellate case, the court upheld a bad faith damage award, as if the Supreme Court’s decision had never been rendered at all. While the law may have changed, it is possibly only in the name. Similarly, when the Supreme Court ordered Donald Evans to return to work after his employer had already fired him, employers in this country felt they had gone from strength to strength. Employees have a duty to “mitigate” their losses following dismissal and, according to the Supreme Court, this duty includes taking a job with the company that has just fired them. Cognizant of the problems this finding could cause, the court thankfully made several exceptions. If returning to work was humiliating, for example, employees could refuse to return. Since then, companies have routinely relied on this decision in an effort to deny wrongful dismissal claims. Often employees are “invited” back to work, but ironically only after first threatening to sue. Very few judges agree that these invitations are legitimate or that returning to work is a reasonable demand to make. Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, not much has changed. As I usually find with workplace law, the game may be different but the decisions are often the same.

Top-seeded Nadal survives first-round scare at French Open
“We’re all professionals here ... All I’m looking for is to turn the page, go forward and play hard.” NEW YORK METS OUTFIELDER CARLOS BELTRAN. THE METS PLAYED THEIR FIRST GAME LAST NIGHT SINCE TEAM OWNER FRED WILPON SHARPLY CRITICIZED METS PLAYERS BELTRAN, JOSE REYES AND DAVID WRIGHT IN AN ARTICLE ON THE NEW YORKER’S WEBSITE.
“Fred Wilpon loves this team with all his heart and I know that, so we’re just going to rally together and win as many games and play as well as we can play.”
Rafael Nadal excelled when he needed to most, winning the final two sets against John Isner yesterday to advance to the second round at the French Open with a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4 victory. The five-time champion, who is now 39-1 at Roland Garros, played a five-set match at the tourney for the first time in seven visits. “Tough, tough moments for me,” Nadal said. “I played too nervous, in my opinion.” The No. 1-seeded Nadal is trying to equal Bjorn Borg’s record of six French Open titles. Bolts trust Roloson for Game 6 Facing elimination, Tampa Bay turns to 41-year-old goaltender ‘We’re behind, but it doesn’t scare us,’ says Martin St. Louis Bruins shooting for first trip to Stanley Cup finals since 1990 The Tampa Bay Lightning are once again hitching their hopes of blocking Boston’s path to the Stanley Cup finals on goaltender Dwayne Roloson. Down 3-2 to the Bruins in the Eastern Conference finals, coach Guy Boucher said Roloson is “the guy that took us here,” so he’ll be in net for Game 6 when the Lightning try to even the best-of-seven series tonight. The Bruins are one victo-

ry away from their first Stanley Cup appearance in 21 years after beating Roloson’s backup, Mike Smith,
in Game 5. Boucher opted to give Smith his first career playoff start after pulling Roloson from two of the previous three games against the Bruins, saying he felt the veteran whose acquisition in January was critical to Tampa Bay’s turnaround season needed a “breather.” Although Smith was solid during Monday night’s 3-1 loss, Boucher sounded as though it was an easy de-
cision to go back to Roloson. “This is a perfect situation. He’s going to be the only rested guy in the two teams,” Boucher said yesterday, noting Roloson has responded well to breaks this season. “He’s one of the hardest working guys on our team. He puts in a lot of hours and a lot of time,” the Lightning coach added. “And he’s like everybody else, at some point or an-
other (he) just needs to breathe a little bit.” Smith shut down Boston after Roloson fell behind 30 in the opening period of Game 4, giving Tampa Bay a chance to rally for a 5-3 victory. He stopped 17-of19 shots Monday night, with the Bruins adding an empty-net goal in the closing seconds. A Lightning victory sends the series back to Boston for Game 7 on Friday night. Aching Tiger may miss U.S. Open primer Tiger Woods says he’ll be ready to go for the U.S. Open. Good thing for Woods there’s time to get healthy. The golfing great hasn’t hit a ball in about two weeks. Woods needs crutches and a walking boot for relief on his aching left leg. He won’t even start leg training until the end of next week.
“There’s a difference between being in pain and being injured.” TIGER WOODS
But Woods expects to tee off at the U.S. Open June 1619 in Bethesda, Md. “You just play through these things,” Woods said. He is bothered by pain in his left knee, left Achilles tendon, tightening in his
calf, and has a sore lower back. Woods says doctors have not mentioned leg surgery. But he doubts he’ll play the Memorial next week in Dublin, Ohio. How Woods’ leg responds when he starts train-
ing next week will determine when he can start hitting balls again — all but ruling out the Memorial. That means Woods would go to the U.S. Open with little competition. “I’ve had four surgeries on it,” Woods said. “Obviously, it’s not what it was when I was little.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Fuel-economy
Two sturdy styles
Traction
The fuel-economy issue is crucial since all other Land Rover/Range Rover models are inherently thirsty beasts. For example, the best that either the V8-powered Range Rover or its Range Rover Sport relation can muster is 17.3 l/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Although the Evoque’s actual numbers have yet to be published, its 240horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, sourced from Ford, will be a relative gas miser.
When ogling the attractive two- and fourdoor body styles, it’s difficult to believe that the Evoque is the real deal when tackling the kind of off-road terrain that made its iconic ancestors so desirable. With its short front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, the odds of becoming hung up on uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog would seem remote.
Traction is supplied by a full-time allwheel-drive system with an electronically controlled centre differential that varies torque between the front and rear wheels depending on where the grip is greatest. The Evoque’s underpinnings can be supplemented with an adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option that offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride.

EP BAS Ford once owned Land Rover, but is it really out of the picture now that Tata controls things? There has been rampant speculation that the Evoque engine is actually the 2.0-litre Ford Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder. That would appear to be the case.

“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable en-
durance. Although the Evoque arrives this fall in multi-terrain-capable condition, high style at a good price is where this Range Rover really shines. The Evoque appears more like a sport wagon derivative of a compact passenger car, especially in two-door livery. It’s slightly shorter than a Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, or Jeep Patriot and about 45 centimetres shorter than a Range Rover Sport. As well, with its steeply raked windshield and tapered roofline, it can also lay claim to being one of the slinkiest, wind-cheating-est rigs around. With a starting price in the $50,000 range, the Evoque should provoke fresh patrons to consider a Range Rover to carry them down a decidedly different path.

Although it appears as though the shift lever has been broken off, there’s actually a knob that takes care of things.
Land Rover claims that the Evoque will accelerate to 100 km/h from zero in 7.6 seconds, no doubt aided by some significant weight-reducing measures that include the use of plastic front fenders and rear liftgate, aluminum hood and roof panels plus various suspension components.

HAPPINESS IS NEW, BIG, SHINY WHEELS AUTO PILOT MIKE GOETZ DRIVE @METRONEWS.CA
W
hat’s the most efficient way to both beatify your vehicle and upgrade its performance? Simple. Get out of the car and let someone else drive... someone who’s better looking and a faster driver. If that’s not going to work for you, consider the second-best option — a new set of wheels and tires. A well-chosen set of alloy rims fitted with aggressive tires looks awesome. And because they are lighter, stronger, and put
more and stiffer rubber on the road than your stock pieces, your vehicle’s handling dynamics will substantially improve as well. It’s a no-brainer. But before you jump in the pool, may we suggest these safety tips, gleamed from our conversation with Param Johl, owner and operator of Megawheelz in Mississauga, Ont., (megawheelz.com). Megawheelz stocks over 5,000 wheels at any given time. The staff sees a lot of wheel consumers, from serious customizers, to those contemplating their first wheel upgrade. When they see those in the latter group, staff often start the consultation process with a reality check. Johl notes that 20inch and larger wheels are certainly in vogue and captivating, but that doesn’t mean they should go on everything, particularly smaller cars.

building a show car, or a “People see these large hobby car for occasional rims on the SUVs and preening around the ‘hood, trucks of their buddies and forget about “Dub” wheels. want them for their (Dub became the famous vehicles too ... but if they short form of “double have a small car, we have dime,” a cooler way of to explain that it is just not referring to tires that are going to work for them.” 20 inches or larger.) For one thing, a small For a daicar will need sheet metal ly and other modifications to accommodate 20inchers. For another, huge rims necessitate extremely low profile tires, and that combination, while visually overthe-top, means the vehicle will ride hard — very hard — Concept One's new Executive like you’re riding wheel line is designed for on wheels of luxury cars, and features a chrome stainless steel lip. concrete. So unless you’re
driver, Johl suggests “plus one” or “plus two” sizing. For a vehicle that comes stock with 15-inch wheels, that means upgrading to 16-inch or 17-inch wheel/tire sets. The rims are bigger and more beautiful, but by fitting them with tires with shorter sidewalls (called low-profile tires), the new tire is able to retain the same diameter as the original one. This is crucial, because over-sized wheels/tires can cause problems with suspension travel, and various computer systems for braking, shifting and instrumentation. There is a bewildering array of wheel designs out there. While the big brands, (American Racing, Foose, O.Z., etc.) continue to set the fashion pace, many smaller brands have
entered the market, offering cheaper takes on hit designs and cool designs of their own. Many websites have 3-D configurators, so you can visualize your ride with all the possibilities. Johl noted that matte, anodized and painted finishes are currently popular. But he adds that the king of bling, chrome, continues to have its fans, even though the chroming process adds considerable weight to an alloy wheel. A good quality alloy wheel set, with good quality rubber, from a reputable and professional wheel shop, will set you back about $1,100 to $1,200. You can pay more of course, or less. Like your choice of design, it’s all up to you. Express yourself. Then roll slowly through the neighbourhood, with the window down and a face that says, “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.”
