Dancers bring moves to Summer Fling fest

The Summer Fling theatre festival will add dance to its program of 10 shows at seven venues in the downtown Rideau area from July 13 to Aug. 27. Canada has imposed economic sanctions against Syria in response to the Middle East country’s violent suppression of anti-government protesters. In announcing the measures yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird called the Syrian regime’s actions a grave breach of international peace. The minister said the measures — effective immediately — are intended to target Syrian rulers, not the people. “We are taking these actions because of the regime’s steadfast and continued refusal to end its violent repression of peaceful demonstrators and the threat this poses to the region,” Baird said in his first public act as Canadian foreign minister. “This abhorrent crackdown

It will be three years in September since Maisy Odjick went missing and her mother Laurie says the hardest part is not knowing where she is. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no closure. There havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been any tips for a very long time,â&#x20AC;? said Odjick. To help families like the Odjicks, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) launched a new website yesterday, MissingKids.ca, as a tool to better locate missing children. Parents can now register their missing child on the site and request support from a trained caseworker as the search develops. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were using oldschool methods to search for missing kids,â&#x20AC;? said Lianna McDonald, executive director of the CCCP. McDonald expects the website will redefine how people search for missing children by tying in social media tools in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s connected society.

Rachelle Marois wants buildings in Ottawa to be more accessible for her and others with mobility issues and she’s reaching out to the community to make that a reality. She entered the Pepsi Refresh Project contest in order to attract funding to launch a social media website that would rate how accessible tourist draws are. “I think that businesses in the travel and tourism industry are losing potential clients and cash flow because people aren’t aware

of how accessible they are,” said Marois, a graduate of La Cité Collégiale’s Travel and Tourism program. “It’s very simple. Why it’s not being done, I don’t know.” Marois, who uses a wheelchair to get around, is hoping to get enough votes to receive a $5,000 grant to help launch the website. She envisions an interactive tool where people can add

She believes the site could expand nationally. “I think it has very good potential and it could help a whole bunch of people. Not just people with disabilities, but it could help moms with strollers or the elderly,” she said.

Festival-goers in Ontario will soon be allowed to wander around more freely with an alcoholic drink in hand — a change the man behind Ottawa Bluesfest says is “long overdue.” “I think the notion that we have to have more regulation is not really appropriate anymore,” said Bluesfest executive and artistic director Mark Monahan. “One of the problems with having a beer tent is that people would go there specifically to drink, and it would encourage binge drinking.” Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley said he is planning to loosen liquor laws in time for this year’s summer festivals. People will still only be able to drink in a “defined area,” but will have more room to move and will be allowed to shop at the same time, he said. Bluesfest organizers

have always made sure their licensed areas are large and near the music, so the only change will be that retailers will be able to sell wares in the same areas where people can drink, Monahan said. Neither the details of the liquor law changes nor the date when they take effect have been announced. Chrysler returned $7.6 billion, including $1.8 billion in high-cost interest, yesterday, a major step forward after the company filed for bankruptcy at the height of the recession. Chrysler said it has retired its original loans six years ahead of schedule. The loan repayment came after the company sold bonds last week and took out a bank loan at a

lower interest rate. As part of the deal, Chrysler agreed to maintain about 20 per cent of its North American production in Ontario, where some 9,000 employees work at plants in Etobicoke, Windsor and Brampton as well as dealerships. News that the automaker had made good on its loan yesterday was celebrated by the provincial government and unions. “I think it’s fair to say Chrysler Fiat’s on a roll as far as Ontario’s concerned,” said Sandra Pupatello, the province’s minister of economic development and trade.

Comeback Chrysler has paid the U.S. $6.5 billion and the EDC $2 billion. Another $2.6 billion from the original loans was not drawn and has been cancelled. The company still owes the governments billions and all three governments continue to hold an equity stake in the automaker. The Canadian government still owns 1.5 per cent of the company.

Coco is an endangered hyacinth macaw, known in Paraguayan Spanish as a “papagayo azul.” Scientists estimated several years ago that only 6,500 were left in the wild, mostly in an area of neighbouring Brazil that is quickly losing natural habitat for the birds. Capturing and exporting the Macaws is illegal and Coco was sent to the zoo eight years ago after authorities broke up a gang of animal traffickers. Only recently did a DNA test show he is male, zoo veterinarian Cristiane Rainner said. To avoid mixing species, the zoo has had to keep him apart from other Macaws, which has left him lonely and a bit bored, Rainner said. “He’s quite sociable, although he’s only learned to say ‘hello.’ But when he hears the cumbia he dances,” Rainner said. “The hyacinth macaw is a beauty, but if it doesn’t reproduce, that’ll be it. Coco is a male and his life expectancy is 80 years.”

Travel in brief The 30th anniversary of Indiana Jones’ big-screen debut is being marked with a new exhibit at the Montreal Science Centre showcasing props from the beloved movies as well as rare real-world artefacts that give patrons a glimpse into the world of archeology.

Fact, fiction and fun are melded together in a new exhibit in Montreal’s Old Port which celebrates intrepid archeologist Indiana Jones 30 years after he burst onto the big screen with feats of daring and the crack of a bullwhip. Visitors to Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology at the Montreal Science Centre are welcomed by a bilingual message from no less than Harrison Ford, who brought Indy to life in the movies beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Jones’ fabled leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip are among the first things people see when they walk into the show which has enough props and real relics to tickle the most diehard fan. “We’re using the character of Indiana Jones as an invitation to discover what the world of archeology is today as well as what the world of archeology was in the past,” said Genevieve

dom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. “Lucasfilm realized that there was a lot of attention and that he was still very famous, a well-loved character,” she said. “Lucasfilm has all these amazing objects in their archives so I guess they quickly put one and one together and said it’s time to let these objects leave the archives and have them tour the world.” The Hollywood filmmakers found kindred spirits in X3 Productions for the show, which comes as the

film franchise marks its 30th anniversary. The exhibit pays lavish tribute to the movies, with a selection of iconic props including the Ark of the Covenant from the first movie, a life-sized sarcophagus from the Well of Souls and a crystal skeleton from Akator on its throne. The building itself features a remarkable flowing design with rounded edges and plenty of windows. Inside, a permanent exhibit traces the story of Canadian civilization from its first peoples through to the modern era. The museum’s centrepiece, the Grand Hall, is devoted to the Aboriginal peoples of the Pacific Northwest. A current exhibit well worth a visit describes the Arctic Expedition of 19131918, one of the first attempts to gather information about Canada’s vast northern lands. A new exhibit, “Japan:

There may be no better family outing in the National Capital Region than a cycle along the Rideau Canal. The paved recreational paths that run alongside the canal from Dow’s Lake to the Ottawa River make for flat, easy riding; a series of interpretive panels along the way tell the story of the canal, while several water fountains will help keep thirst at bay. A favourite outing begins at Hog’s Back Park, where the canal splits off from the Rideau River and flows toward the Ottawa River, approximately eight kilometres away. The park offers free parking, a can-

teen and rest rooms. A quick walking tour of spectacular Hog’s Back Falls is a must. A short bike ride takes you to the first of the dozen locks on the route. Each lock is a basin that can be filled and emptied through a system of sluice gates, enabling boats to bypass the Rideau River’s numerous rapids. Opened in 1832, this is the oldest continuously operating canal system in North America. The summer months attract a steady stream of boats to the canal, and kids of all ages love to watch the boats rise as the lock fills with water. Afterward, cross over the canal and hop back on your bikes for the short ride to Dow’s Lake.

Created during the construction of the canal, Dow’s Lake was once a massive swamp. Today, it is a popular spot for visitors and the adjacent arboretum is perfect for picnics. A pavilion on the lake features restaurants and rentals of canoes, kayaks and pedal boats. From there, the path runs directly alongside the canal and through fashionable neighbourhoods such as the Glebe and the Golden Triangle. You’ll cycle past many gorgeous gardens and stately homes, and ride under the historic Pretoria Bridge. A short while later, you’ll reach the Bytown Museum — the turnaround point. Two recent cases define the current state of workplace law in Canada above all others. Both cases have made a drastic impact, and unfortunately both are often misunderstood. When the Supreme Court mostly erased the substantial damages a lower court awarded to Kevin Keays, an assembly line worker at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ont., employers in Canada collectively sighed in relief. According to the court, employers would no longer be responsible for “bad faith” damages based on how they treat their employees. Instead, it declared that employees could sue for mistreatment only if they could prove they actually suffered from harm. Most corporate lawyers leapt on the bandwagon and pronounced bad faith damages all but dead. An employee could be mistreated, they routinely argued, but without evidence of a medical illness, damages would be much more difficult to achieve. That is wrong. In the three years since the Supreme Court released its decision in Keays, low-

While the law may have changed, it is possibly only in the name. Similarly, when the Supreme Court ordered Donald Evans to return to work after his employer had already fired him, employers in this country felt they had gone from strength to strength. Employees have a duty to “mitigate” their losses following dismissal and, according to the Supreme Court, this duty includes taking a job with the company that has just fired them. Cognizant of the problems this finding could cause, the court thankfully made several exceptions. If returning to work was humiliating, for example, employees could refuse to return. Since then, companies have routinely relied on this decision in an effort to deny wrongful dismissal claims. Often employees are “invited” back to work, but ironically only after first threatening to sue. Very few judges agree that these invitations are legitimate or that returning to work is a reasonable demand to make. Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, not much has changed. As I usually find with workplace law, the game may be different but the decisions are often the same.

Aching Tiger may miss U.S. Open primer Tiger Woods says he’ll be ready to go for the U.S. Open. Good thing for Woods there’s time to get healthy. The golfing great hasn’t hit a ball in about two weeks. Woods needs crutches and a walking boot for relief on his aching left leg. He won’t even start leg training until the end of next week.

Two sturdy styles

The fuel-economy issue is crucial since all other Land Rover/Range Rover models are inherently thirsty beasts. For example, the best that either the V8-powered Range Rover or its Range Rover Sport relation can muster is 17.3 l/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Although the Evoque’s actual numbers have yet to be published, its 240horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, sourced from Ford, will be a relative gas miser.

When ogling the attractive two- and fourdoor body styles, it’s difficult to believe that the Evoque is the real deal when tackling the kind of off-road terrain that made its iconic ancestors so desirable. With its short front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, the odds of becoming hung up on uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog would seem remote.

Traction is supplied by a full-time allwheel-drive system with an electronically controlled centre differential that varies torque between the front and rear wheels depending on where the grip is greatest. The Evoque’s underpinnings can be supplemented with an adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option that offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride.

“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable en-

durance. Although the Evoque arrives this fall in multi-terrain-capable condition, high style at a good price is where this Range Rover really shines. The Evoque appears more like a sport wagon derivative of a compact passenger car, especially in two-door livery. It’s slightly shorter than a Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, or Jeep Patriot and about 45 centimetres shorter than a Range Rover Sport. As well, with its steeply raked windshield and tapered roofline, it can also lay claim to being one of the slinkiest, wind-cheating-est rigs around. With a starting price in the $50,000 range, the Evoque should provoke fresh patrons to consider a Range Rover to carry them down a decidedly different path.

hat’s the most efficient way to both beatify your vehicle and upgrade its performance? Simple. Get out of the car and let someone else drive... someone who’s better looking and a faster driver. The rims are bigger and more beautiful, but by fitting them with tires with shorter sidewalls (called low-profile tires), the new tire is able to retain the same diameter as the original one. This is crucial, because over-sized wheels/tires can cause problems with suspension travel, and various computer systems for braking, shifting and instrumentation. There is a bewildering array of wheel designs out there. While the big brands, (American Racing, Foose, O.Z., etc.) continue to set the fashion pace, many smaller brands have

entered the market, offering cheaper takes on hit designs and cool designs of their own. Many websites have 3-D configurators, so you can visualize your ride with all the possibilities. Johl noted that matte, anodized and painted finishes are currently popular. But he adds that the king of bling, chrome, continues to have its fans, even though the chroming process adds considerable weight to an alloy wheel. A good quality alloy wheel set, with good quality rubber, from a reputable and professional wheel shop, will set you back about $1,100 to $1,200. You can pay more of course, or less. Like your choice of design, it’s all up to you. Express yourself. Then roll slowly through the neighbourhood, with the window down and a face that says, “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.”

Ensure the transfer case switches between its various drive modes as outlined in the owner’s manual, and note that unwelcomed vibrations or sounds from beneath the vehicle could be the result of a worn out or damaged suspension component or driveshaft. Finally, note the quality of the gear shift between second and third on models with the automatic transmission. If the transmission feels like its slipping during said shift, there’s likely a problem with a gearshift solenoid in the transmission.
