RAFE ARNOTT/METRO FILE

Severed feet linked to missing man Authorities have solved part of the severed feet mystery after finding DNA evidence that links two feet to a 21-year-old Surrey man reported missing in 2004. According to the Ministry of Public Safety, the man’s feet washed ashore on two separate British Columbia islands in 2008. The feet were identified by DNA analysis after an “exhaustive” post-mortem investigation by the Coroners Service, the ministry said in a press release. The feet were found on Feb. 8 and June 16, 2008, on Valdes Island and Westham Island respectively, each with matching size 11 Nike running shoes. Autopsies showed the feet had not been mechanically removed but rather separated through the natural process of disarticulation. Foul play has been ruled out. The man’s identity has not been released. This closes another chapter in the mystery of seven feet belonging to five people that washed up along the B.C. coast between August 2007 and October 2009. Four of those feet have now been positively matched through DNA to three people, including the Surrey man. KRISTEN THOMPSON JEFF HODSON/METRO FILE

Homeless rate drops for first time since 2002 One per cent drop from 2008 Homeless Count MATT KIELTYKA

@METRONEWS.CA

There are fewer homeless people in the Metro Vancouver region now than there were three years ago, according to preliminary results of the 2011 Homeless Count. On March 16, volunteers counted 2,623 homeless people throughout the region, a one per cent drop over the last count done in 2008. It marks the first time since the count began in 2002 that the homeless population has dropped — though the number overall has skyrocketed from 1,121

homeless people in 2002. “For the first time in four counts, we counted fewer people,” said Alice Sundberg, co-chair of the Regional Steering Committee on Homelessness. “(It) indicates a change in growth patterns. This year’s count data is evidence that integrated community and government initiatives and partnerships contribute to better outcomes.” Sundberg said that if it had not been for several drastic measures, such as Vancouver’s HEAT shelters, the number of people out on the streets would be higher. In fact, the proportion of

sheltered homeless to unsheltered constituted the biggest swing in this year’s numbers. Mike Klassen, a candidate for the Non-Partisan Association Vancouver council, argued that while a chunk of the homeless population has shifted indoors, they’re still homeless. “The dial has not moved in the last three years,” he said. “The key question that everyone really asks is whether it’s about finding people homes.” But Judy Graves, the City of Vancouver’s housing advocate, said shelters have an important role in tackling homelessness. “The shelters need to be

understood in their proper role. We’re not warehousing people in the shelters,” she said. “It’s a very dynamic process. People are coming in from the streets and staying in shelters just long enough to get permanent housing.” She pointed to the 40-bed New Fountain Shelter, where 300 people have been transitioned to supportive housing since accessing the recently closed shelter.

Elderly men injured in two separate assaults METRO FILE

Two elderly men are in hospital after being injured in two incidents — one a robbery and another a violent, unprovoked shove — in the Downtown Eastside. The first victim, 85, who police describe as “frail,” was walking near Carrall and East Hastings streets just before 6 p.m. on Monday when he fell backwards and hit his head. A taxi driver pulled over

to help and noticed a second Good Samaritan seemingly on her way to lend a hand. As the elderly man lay there bleeding, the woman knelt down, rifled through his pockets, grabbed his money and ran off, said Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness. “This is a robbery that even the most seasoned criminals would find despi-

cable,” McGuinness said. Police arrested a 33-yearold Vancouver woman nearby. The victim remains in hospital. A few hours earlier, a 79year-old man was walking near Main and Hastings streets when another man came up behind him and, seemingly without provocation, shoved him face first to the ground.

McGuinness said two officers across the street witnessed the incident and ran to the aid of the victim, who “fell very hard and smashed his dentures.” Graham Neil Balanko, 41, is facing one charge of assault. Police have also recommended Balanko undergo a mental-health assessment. KRISTEN THOMPSON

Men who are all smiles may have something to frown about, according to a new University of B.C. study. Women find happy, smiling men significantly less attractive than swaggering or brooding men, says the study, published online yesterday in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion. The paper found dramatic gender differences in how men and women rank the sexual attractiveness of commonly displayed emotions, including happiness, pride and shame. The study, which queried 1,000 men and women, found women were more attracted to men who looked proud and powerful or moody and ashamed. Men, on the other

Compromises pledged U.S. Congress gives Israeli PM standing ovations days after his dustup with Barack Obama Netanyahu rejects ‘indefensible’ pre-1967 borders Borders Israel, which enjoys strong bipartisan backing in U.S. Congress, has been rattled by President Barack Obama’s support for drawing the future borders of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state on the basis of Israel’s pre-‘67 war frontiers. Benjamin Netanyahu has challenged Obama’s position repeatedly, ignoring Obama’s assertion that the territorial markers could be adjusted through agreed land swaps. The Palestinians accept that principle. In his speech before Congress, Netanyahu backed off from his dispute with Obama.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged yesterday to make “painful compromises” for peace with the Palestinians, for the first time explicitly saying that some West Bank settlements would find themselves outside Israel’s final borders. He also tacked on a list of often-stated conditions that have been unacceptable to the Palestinians. Speaking before a warmly receptive joint meeting

of the U.S. Congress that showered him with more than two dozen sustained standing ovations, Netanyahu said Israel wants and needs peace. But he repeated his flat rejection of a return to what he called the “indefensible” borders that Israel had before the 1967 Middle East war. He also restated Israel’s refusal to repatriate millions of Palestinian refugees and their families to homes of what is needed to resume negotiations. Nabil Shaath, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on keeping key parts of the territories the

in Israel that they lost in fighting over the Jewish state’s 1948 creation. Netanyahu also maintained anew that contested Jerusalem could not be shared with the Palestinians, who want the eastern sector of the holy city as the capital of their hoped-for state. He insisted that Israel maintain a long-term military presence on what would be the eastern border of a Palestinian state. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Erupting Iceland volcano grounds flights — again But no mishap as defiant budget airline takes off SCOTT HEPPELL/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ash spewing from an Icelandic volcano is bringing disruption and uncertainty to European air travel. Despite claims of a massive over-reaction, hundreds of flights were cancelled yesterday as winds blew the cloud of ash from the Grimsvotn volcano over Scotland and other parts of Europe. Experts say particles in the ash could stall jet engines. Officials in Germany said dozens of flights would be grounded today. The only comfort for frustrated passengers and airlines is that officials in Iceland said the amount of ash being released by the volcano was decreasing.

been hit hardest. In Sweden, 10 domestic flights were cancelled last night. Although British authorities said concentrations of ash in the skies over Scotland were too high to fly through, Irish budget airline Ryanair challenged the results, saying it had sent its own airplane into Scottish airspace and found no ash in the atmosphere. “We encountered absolutely no problems,” said Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary. “There’s no cloud over Scotland. There’s no dusting of ash on the airframe or the wings.”

A traveller waits for a flight at Edinburgh airport.

The officials don’t expect the disruption to be as bad as last year’s, when millions were stranded after the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Travellers trying to go to or leave Scotland have

A sudden downpour makes life uncomfortable on the Manila barricades, but protesters vow their standoff won’t be a washout.

Graphic black-and-white videos have sparked a sex scandal in Turkey. They appear to show senior members of an opposition party in liaisons with women. The video spies did not just rig hidden cameras. They posted taunting screen text before slapping the footage on the Internet. The scandal could benefit the government in elections next month. If the opposition party, MHP, falls below a vote threshold of 10 per cent June 12, it will lose a place in parliament. Ten MHP members have resigned. But a video message urged the ouster of the MHP leadership, saying “If you have at least a little bit of shame … you should all resign.”

Canada gets tough on Syria No plans for NATO no-fly zone in Syria, says Baird Opposition Leader Jack Layton supports sanctions SEAN KILPATRICK/THE CANADIAN PRESS

Canada has imposed economic sanctions against Syria in response to the Mideast country’s violent suppression of anti-government protesters. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird called the Syrian regime’s actions a grave breach of international peace yesterday. He said the measures — effective immediately — are intended to target Syrian rulers, not the people. The sanctions prevent Syrian leaders from travelling to Canada and essentially ban trade between the two countries. Canada exports only about $60

Royal visit for Obamas Warm welcome from the Queen cements relations between the U.S. and U.K.

Michelle Obama talks to Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, at Buckingham Palace in London yesterday.

U.S. President Barack Obama spent yesterday in the splendour of Buckingham Palace during his four-state European tour, tending to the importance of U.S. relations with England. Along the way, Obama and his wife Michelle cemented their friendship with the 85-year-old Queen. A 41-gun salute at the palace, a grand ceremony

private luncheon and meeting with newlyweds Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, was followed by a glitzy state dinner, only the second Britain has ever thrown for a U.S. president. In toasting Queen Elizabeth II, Obama called her “a living witness to the power of our alliance and a chief source of its resilience.” The Queen said the relationship

between the two countries is “tried, tested and, yes, special.” Following the gift-giving tradition, the Obamas gave the Queen a selection of memorabilia and photographs from her parents’ 1939 visit to the United States. The Queen gave the president a collection of letters from the Royal Archives and Michelle an

antique brooch. As the Obamas bonded with the Queen, there was a parallel effort to build ties with British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose help Obama will need on an array of issues. Today, Obama will delve into foreign policy with Cameron and address British Parliament. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A pancake-shaped fish, a “T-Rex” leech found inside a human nose and a bacterium that eats rust from the sunken Titanic are just some of the weird new species discovered last year, say U.S. scientists. The experts from the International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University warn that many species may become extinct before they are even discovered. Glowing reviews?

A jumped-up insect?

The pancake batfish, found in the Gulf of Mexico before last year’s oil spill, seems to hobble along the seabed on thick arm-like fins.

The leech, which has earned the name Tyrannobdella rex (meaning (“tyrant leech king”) is very much like that famous toothy meateating dinosaur. Curiously, it was discovered in the nostril of a nine-yearold girl in Peru.

Tiny mushrooms in the forests of Brazil were discovered with “gelcoated stems that glow constantly, emitting a bright yellowish-green light,” said the scientists.

Other newly found species include a West African antelope found at a bushmeat market, an orb-weaving spider whose silk is twice as strong as ordinary spider thread and a cockroach that jumps like a grasshopper.

You would think Harold Camping would know when to shut up already. Camping is the 89-year-old PAUL SULLIVAN evangelist from Oakland, METRO Calif., who managed to convince a lot of gullible people that the world was coming to an end Saturday (and it would have spoiled a long weekend, too). Then, as Saturday dawned on Business as Usual, Camping compounded his cuckoo quotient by claiming it was a mathematical error and the real end of the world is still coming Oct. 21. Those people who sold all their worldly possessions to prepare for Apocalypse Now are stuck and will have to make it until Oct. 21 with just the clothes on their backs until they are saved, or taken up, or whatever. Camping tried this trick before in 1994 and it didn’t work then either. Same problem — mathematical error. Camping may be one heck of a preacher, but he should “(Harold) consider remedial math. And come Oct. 21, we could be the victims of a cataclysmic coincidence, and there is Camping saying “I told you so” as he gets taken up. “Next time, you’ll listen. Oops, my bad. There is no next time.” The truth is (and I can’t believe I need to say this) whatever does or does not happen to the world Oct. 21 will have nothing to do with some old guy from Oakland. There are 170-billion galaxies in the known universe and each galaxy has between 200-billion and 400-billion stars. It’s more than a little difficult to believe that God will point a big old finger at the tiny third planet circling around one of those 400-billion stars and say “That’s it, folks. Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning ASUNCION, Paraguay. The Asuncion zoo is desperately seeking a mate for Coco, the last known male of his species left in Paraguay. Coco is an endangered hyacinth macaw, known in Paraguayan Spanish as a “papagayo azul.” Scientists estimated several years ago that only 6,500 were left in the wild, mostly in an area of neighbouring Brazil that is quickly losing natural habitat for the birds. Capturing and exporting the Macaws is illegal and Coco was sent to the zoo eight years ago after authorities broke up a gang of animal traffickers. Only recently did a DNA test show he is male, zoo veterinarian Cristiane Rainner said. To avoid mixing species, the zoo has had to keep him apart from other Macaws, which has left him lonely and a bit bored, Rainner said. “He’s quite sociable, although he’s only learned to say ‘hello.’ But when he hears the cumbia he dances,” Rainner said. “The hyacinth macaw is a beauty, but if it doesn’t reproduce, that’ll be it. Coco is a male and his life expectancy is 80 years.”

Stealth chopper at night is optional The official tourist map for Abbottabad, Pakistan, urges visitors to discover its “hidden” treasures. Some think that should include a peek behind the infamous walls of Osama bin Laden’s compound. It makes sense to the deputy head of the tourism office. The threestorey villa is known around the world. Abbottabad is already popular as an alpine escape from the summer

heat. And a museum at the last stand of the al-Qaida leader could mine some long-term cash from the town’s instant brush with notoriety. It’s not a universal view by any stretch. Many want to demolish the building to try to recapture Abbottabad’s ambiance as a quiet corner in a chaotic country. But those contemplating some way to profit from the May 2 raid that killed bin Laden seem to know there is a well-established market for infamy. The Tower of London — and its sometimes role as a prison and execution hall — is one of the city’s main tourist draws. Tours abound for everything from Hollywood tragedies to the trail of the Boston Strangler. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The highs and lows of O Oprah Winfrey’s last show airs today so what better time to look back at her TV career And it was good… Super-Oprah comes into the world on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah gets her start, meets Gayle After three years of anchor news reporting, in 1976, Winfrey hosts the six o’clock news at Baltimore’s WJZ-TV, where she meets future bestie-for-life, Gayle King, who was working there as a production assistant.

Forming an empire and defending free speech In 1998, Winfrey forms Oxygen Media, which would spawn the Oxygen cable channel. In the same year, she wins a “food disparagement” case against Texas cattlemen after her comments in a 1996 episode about Mad Cow Disease. Let the lifestyling begin Winfrey expands her reach with O Magazine, which offers advice on personal finance, fitness and spiritual wellness.

The Color Purple Winfrey stars as Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple in 1985 and scores a Best Supporting Actress nod by the Academy Awards.

Paging Dr. Phil Winfrey may be leaving but her self-help posse remains: Dr. Phil debuted in 2002, Rachael Ray in 2006, The Dr. Oz Show in 2009 and The Nate Berkus Show just last year.

The big break Since her move to Chicago in 1983, Winfrey was hosting localized version of what was to become The Oprah Winfrey Show, which first nationally broadcast on September 8th, 1986.

“You get a car!” On September 12, 2004, Winfrey shocked the audience: Each one of those lucky, well-deserving, loyal jerks got a Pontiac G6 — 276 in all.In November 2010, she gave away VW Beetles.

The Emmys In 1987, Winfrey receives her first of more than 45 Daytime Emmy Awards that she would collect before removing the show from consideration in 2000.

Tom Cruise gets excited talking about Katie Holmes Remember May 23, 2005? According to the Urban Dictionary “jump the couch” is “a defining moment when you know someone has gone off the deep end.”

The weight struggles Winfrey starts what would become a 20-plus year public discussion about her weight fluctuation with the Diet Dreams Come True episode of November 15, 1988, in which she is a slim size 10.

Opens school in South Africa The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls debuts in January 2, 2007, lauded by humanitarians, and nearly overshadowed when a female employee is later accused of molestation.

The engagement that would last a lifetime In 1992, Oprah Winfrey gets engaged to businessman Stedman Graham — whom she has yet to actually marry.

Denies being gay After years of dogged rumours about her sexuality, and questions about her relationship with friend Gayle King, Winfrey opens up to Barbara Walters in December 2010. “I’m not lesbian. I’m not even kind of lesbian,” she said, soon tearing up while praising King. “She is … the mother I never had. She is … the sister everybody would want.”

The Queen of Daytime and the King of Pop In 1993, it was only Winfrey who could get the pale Michael Jackson to explain that he had not bleached his skin, but that he had skin-pigment disorder known as vitiligo. This was to become one of her highest rated episodes, with 62 million viewers watching. The Oprah Book Club Oprah Winfrey launches her book club in 1996. More than 60 selections have instantaneously earned a lucky author boatloads of money and an immediate spot on the New York Times’ Best Seller List.

sticky situation in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the movie’s best boozers have been a

varied group. There’s the happy drunk, a smashed stereotype best personified by Dudley Moore in Arthur. Rarely sober, the character stumbles through life with the aid of his loyal butler and bottles of champagne. When his fiancée Susan (Jill Eikenberry) tells him that “a real woman could stop you from drinking,” he replies, “It’d have to be a real BIG woman.” If Moore was most loveable, then Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa con man in

is the least likeable. As a mall Santa who only takes the job to rob the place on Christmas Eve, he drinks, destroys a holiday display and scars an entire crowd of children. Drunk movie moments abound although the sight of a wobbly Santa Claus in a back alley swigging from a flask is the most indelible. Jeff Bridges has played a variety of drunks in his day, most recently in True Grit and Crazy Heart, but his best known drinker is Jeffrey (The Dude) Lebowski

who singlehandedly repopularized the white Russian. As laid-back party monster he drinks nine white Russians during the course of the movie. Of course Hollywood occasionally uncorks a serious look at drinkers. Ray Milland showed the destructive side of boozing in The Lost Weekend, ditto Barfly’s Mickey Rourke, but few have brought as much boozy beauty to a role than Elizabeth Taylor as the cantankerous Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Indiana brings his goodies to Montreal Items from the four Indiana Jones movies go on display at Montreal Science Centre Exhibit aims to raise interest in archaeology and celebrate the 30th anniversary of franchise HANDOUT

Travel in brief

George Lucas figures he’s working on his third generation of Star Wars fans. And plenty of them were standing in line with their parents Friday to get first crack at Walt Disney World’s overhauled ride based on the iconic movie franchise. The 67-year-old Star Wars creator came to the park to celebrate the reopening of the venerable Star Tours motion simulator ride whose 25-yearold story and visuals have been updated with a digital projection system and 3-D effects. The Disneyland version of the ride opens June 3 in Anaheim, Calif.

Fact, fiction and fun are melded together in a new exhibit in Montreal’s Old Port which celebrates intrepid archeologist Indiana Jones 30 years after he burst onto the big screen with feats of daring and the crack of a bullwhip. Visitors to Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology at the Montreal Science Centre are welcomed by a bilingual message from no less than Harrison Ford, who brought Indy to life in the movies beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Jones’ fabled leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip are among the first things people see when they walk into the show which has enough props and real relics to tickle the most diehard fan.

If you go … Address: Montreal Science Centre, King Edward Pier, Old Port of Montreal, corner of de la Commune Street and St-Laurent Boulevard. Price: $23 for adults, $20 for teens and seniors. Children get in for $13.50. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On the web: montrealscie ncecentre.com/home.html

“We’re using the character of Indiana Jones as an invitation to discover what the world of archeology is today as well as what the world of archeology was in the past,” said Genevieve Angio-Morneau, one of the show’s creators. The original Raiders remains one of the top-grossing films of all time and was followed by three sequels and a TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. There have also been comic books and video games with the character. Angio-Morneau, a designer and museologist with Montreal’s X3 Productions, says the idea for the show came from Lucasfilm when it saw the success of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. “Lucasfilm realized that there was a lot of attention and that he was still very fa-

France’s hidden jewel

Like Venice, the French town of Troyes has to be seen to be believed The heart of this stunning town is lined with 16th-century timbered mansions At the heart of France’s textile industry, there’s discount shopping too EMMA E. FORREST

METRO WORLD NEWS

There are many beautiful towns and villages in France, and they are all worth visiting, but few are as standout-spectacular as the town of Troyes. The streets of beautifully preserved timbered medieval buildings in the town’s historical centre

make it a very special place to visit. Set in the heart of the Champagne region, the centre of Troyes (pronounced “trois,” like the French word for three), is actually shaped like a champagne cork. The magnificent architecture dates back to 1524 when 500 houses were built by wealthy mer-

chants after a fire had burned down most of the city. Those houses, with their timbered fronts, have been lovingly restored and it’s a pleasure to stroll down the cobbled pedestrian streets. Pick up one of the many guides in the tourist office at 16 rue Carnot, and follow a route through the town so you catch all the

highlights. Check out the historical tool museum, and if the exhibits don’t sound appealing, stop by just for a walk round the beautiful interior courtyard garden, which showcases useful and beautifully scented herbs. There’s also the Gothic

cathedral St Pierre et St Paul, which boasts 1,500 square metres of stained glass dating from the

This medieval town is so remarkable that it feels like a theme park. 13th to 19th centuries, as well as the Modern Art Museum (Musée d’Art Moderne) in the former bishop’s palace next door, with more than 2,000 works from French artists including Rodin, Dégas and Derain. Tucked down the picturesque alleys are lots of little shops, as well as restaurants and bars, with terraces outside. There’s also a manicured park to laze in and a busy main square packed with bars with terraces, the perfect pitch for people-watching with a glass of wine. In the evening, the pavements outside restaurants are lined with tables for al fresco dining. Gourmet adventurers beware: the local specialty, Andouillette de Troyes, is a sausage filled with smoked tripe, and smells a bit like halitosis. It’s not for the faint-hearted. When you’ve had your fill of culture, give yourself a shopping hit without depleting your wallet: Troyes is at the heart of France’s textile industry and it’s where the big brands have their outlet stores.

Employment lawyers predict that cases of dismissal involving Twitter and Facebook will become common

Those in the public eye aren’t the only ones who should watch what they tweet. Lawyers warn it probably won’t be long before an unknown Internet user inadvertently becomes a case study in how not to use social media. Lawyers caution that there are real risks in sharing potentially controversial opinions or statements with the world via Twitter, or even in a private network on Facebook. But they can’t say exactly what kind of statements constitute crossing the line, because Canadian courts haven’t weighed in on the issue — yet. Toronto employment lawyer Stacey Ball isn’t CORRECTION: Please note

hearing about many claims of wrongful dismissal associated with social media posts gone wrong, but he expects that will change eventually. “It does happen but you don’t see a lot of it, it’s sort of a very recent phenomenon,” says Ball, who is also the author of the industry tome Canadian Employment Law. “But you’re going to see more of this.” Under Canadian law, a non-unionized employee can be fired at any time, for any reason provided they’re given adequate notice or pay in lieu. But an oft-cited 1967 Ontario Court of Appeal ruling provides grounds for an employer to terminate without compensation. “If an employee has been guilty of serious misconduct, habitual neglect of duty, incompetence, or

conduct incompatible with his duties, or prejudicial to the employer’s business, or if he has been guilty of wilful disobedience to the employer’s orders in a matter of substance, the law recognizes the employer’s right summarily to dismiss the delinquent employee,” reads the decision. Two recent cases define the current state of workplace law in Canada above all others. Both cases have made a drastic impact, and both are often misunderstood. When the Supreme Court mostly erased the substantial damages a lower court awarded to Kevin Keays, an assembly line worker at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ont., employers in Canada collectively sighed in relief. According to the court, employers would no longer be responsible for “bad faith”

Career Finder

damages based on how they treat their employees. Instead, it declared that employees could sue for mistreatment only if they could prove they actually suffered from harm. Most corporate lawyers leapt on the bandwagon and pronounced bad faith damages all but dead. An employee could be mistreated, they routinely argued, but without evidence of a medical illness, damages would be much more difficult to achieve. That is wrong. In the three years since the Supreme Court released its decision in Keays, lower courts have not applied it consistently and sometimes not at all. In one recent appellate case, the court upheld a bad faith damage award, as if the Supreme Court’s decision had never been rendered at all. While the law may have changed, it is possibly only in the name.

Similarly, when the Supreme Court ordered Donald Evans to return to work after his employer had already fired him, employers in this country felt they had gone from strength to strength. Employees have a duty to “mitigate” their losses following dismissal and, according to the Supreme Court, this duty includes taking a job with the company that has just fired them. Cognizant of the problems this finding could cause, the court thankfully made several exceptions. If returning to work was humiliating, for example, employees could refuse to return. Since then, companies have routinely relied on this decision in an effort to deny wrongful dismissal claims. DANIEL LUBLIN IS AN EMPLOYMENT LAWYER WITH WHITTEN & LUBLIN LLP. 2011 crop faces monumentally rough competition for entry-level gigs. Students can expect to vie against part-timers, the unemployed, and the farmore-experienced for that rarest of openings: the publicly-posted job listing. But there’s hope, CareerBuilder.com advisor Allison Nawoj proclaims. “We are seeing a slightly rosier picture when we’re looking at the college job market this year, she says. “It’s not anything like the pre-recession levels we saw in 2007, but 47 per cent of employers said they planned to hire college graduates, and that’s a bit better than the past few years.

More often than not, fresh graduates brave the open job market with no contacts, a department of elderly lecturers for references, and a stint marketing the soup du jour as their main work experience: hardly the stuff of a smashing resumĂŠ. The trick to beefing up

that meager resumĂŠ is to build it around the skills you’ve acquired at each position, says President Natascha F. Saunders of the Youth Career Coach. “Some people think, ‘oh, all I’ve got is that summer job, it doesn’t mean anything,â€? she says. “Just eliminate that thought. You have transferable

If stress is a norm in your current position or inherent in your career field, then perhaps you need to consider the repercussions your job may have on your physical health. Patchworkers are committed to seeking out work that is a healthy, inspiring part of their everyday lives.

You’ve always wanted more freedom on the job.

If you are a clock-watcher, imagine what your day might be like if instead the work you were doing was aligned with something you felt passionate about. Imagine your life spent doing work that caused time to race by each day because you were in your flow, engrossed in enjoyable activity. This is how a patchworker spends every work day. Bosses, don’t beat around the bush STUDENT VOICE HEATHER BELLINGHAM TALENTEGG.CA

I was always that kid who knew exactly what she wanted to do: Work behind the camera in the film and television industry. I attended Humber College’s Film and Television Production program and graduated with honours. We were warned repeatedly that we were going to be working for free for at least two or three years. I was abWhere Heather is now

solutely prepared to be underemployed. What I was not prepared for was the treatment I would receive. I learned that I had to grow a thick skin, very quickly. I interned at several companies that absolutely guaranteed I would get a job after six months, only to later discover that they had no intention of hiring me. Once I inquired about this “job offer,” they would let me go and look for a new, unpaid intern. When I did manage to get a paying job, which was rare, it was usually an “honorarium,” so I was paid significantly under minimum ough. It was, by far, one of the better decisions I have made, and I will forever be grateful for the experiences I had there. I now have a wider variety of qualifications, and I’m better prepared for the potential pitfalls of job searching.

Heather Bellingham wants employers to be perfectly clear about their intentions.

wage to work full-time. This was not always so bad. Something is better than nothing, after all, and some of the people I

worked with were absolutely lovely. However, many of these were shortlived contract positions. This is in addition to the

significant number of job interviews I attended. Without going into detail, I will say that there are a lot of shady people out there, particularly in the film industry, and in some circumstances the “casting couch” story is absolutely true, even for people working behind the camera. Needless to say, some interviews ended abruptly. The main recommendation I would give to employers would be to be completely and totally up front. Just be honest with us. If this unpaid internship will not lead to a job, tell us. Sometimes the experience is valuable on its own. If you want a personal assistant, advertise that, not a job that involves working on a project that doesn’t actually exist. If the job is unpaid, do not list the salary as “competitive.” If you are honest, you will build much better working relationships with potential employees.

What I learned Key take-aways from Heather’s experience: Don’t put up with degrading or possibly illegal behaviour on the part of an employer, and report it to the proper authorities when necessary. If an internship doesn’t pay, make sure it will provide the industry experience and networking opportunities you’ll need to take the next step in your career. Take advantage of the time during which you are unemployed.

Mom, what’s a ‘snow day’?

Could the advent of the Internet mean the end of sudden, snow-covered days off for young students? ISTOCK

Could the Internet mean the end of snow days? Some schools think so, and they are experimenting with ways for students to do lessons online during bad weather, potentially allowing classes to go on during even the worst blizzard. “Virtual snow days” would help ease pressure on school calendars. Because districts are required to be in session for a certain number of hours or days, losing teaching time to winter weather can mean extending the school day or cutting short spring break or summer vacation. And cancelling school in the winter, when some of the most difficult material of the year is covered, risks leaving students with a learning deficit heading into the spring, when many

Virtual classes The first experiments with virtual snow days began a few years ago as individual teachers started logging on during poor weather to drill older students. Since then, entire schools and districts have joined in, using websites such as Skype and YouTube to keep students as young as kindergarten studying during storms.

states administer standardized tests. “Even if you can't continue on at the same pace, being able to keep students on track can make a huge difference,” said Doug Levin, executive director of the non-profit State Educational Technology Directors Association. Virtual learning, which has been widely used by colleges and universities for years, is becoming more viable for younger students as teachers and administrators grow comfortable with the technology. Online learning also saves money because districts don't have to pay for transportation, electricity and custodians. But there are obstacles, too. Many families don't have Internet access with

speeds that would support complex classroom-style work, especially in rural areas and impoverished inner cities. Families with multiple children - without multiple computers - could be hard-pressed to keep up. And some people say kids just need an occasional extra day off in the depths of winter. “When deep snow falls, the world becomes quiet and still. And if we listen to our instincts, we settle in and enjoy the pure joy of not doing,” David Santner wrote on the website for the Poughkeepsie Day School in New York, where his son is a middle schooler, after the school turned to online learning during a spate of winter storms. Kevin Bieksa scored 10:18 into the second overtime as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 last night to advance to the Stanley Cup final for the first time in 17 years. The game was won on a strange play. The puck took a funny bounce off the back boards, and several of the Sharks were standing looking around when Bieksa fired a knuckler of shot that fooled everyone, including San Jose goalie Antti Niemi. “I shot it. I think when the puck went in the goalie was looking behind the net,” Bieksa said. “It was an ugly goal, but one I will take.” Canuck goaltender Roberto Luongo raised his stick in celebration as the rest of the team poured on the ice. Confetti fell from the roof as the sellout crowd of 18,860 chanted “We want the Cup.” “The only guy who knew where that puck was, was Kevin Bieksa and he almost fanned on it,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. “It’s one of those things you have no control over. We can talk about it all we want. There is nothing we can do about it.” The Canucks won the best-of-seven series 4-1. “It’s fantastic. It’s unbelievable,” Bieksa said. “To go to the Stanley Cup final is a dream come true.”

Alex Burrows celebrates Kevin Bieksa’s game-winning goal in the second overtime period last night.

Ryan Kesler scored with 13.2 seconds left in the third period to force the overtime. The gritty centre tipped a shot by Henrik Sedin past Niemi. The Sharks outshot the Canucks 16-9 in the first overtime. Luongo kept Vancouver in the game by making a glove save of a

Kyle Wellwood shot and blocking a deflection off the skate of Ian White. Vancouver was outshot 56-34. The game was played exactly 17 years after Greg Adams scored in double overtime to give Vancouver a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the

1994 Western Conference final. The Canucks would lose the Stanley Cup final in seven games to the New York Rangers The Canucks will now wait for the winner of the Eastern Conference final between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning. The Bruins lead that series

3-2 with Game 5 tonight. Devin Setoguchi gave San Jose a 2-1 lead with just 24 seconds gone in the third. A bouncing puck at the blue-line got past Canuck defenceman Alex Edler, giving Setoguchi and Joe Pavelski a twoman breakaway on Luongo. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Nash keeps close eye on Canucks NBA star Steve Nash is as keenly interested in the playoff run of the Vancouver Canucks as any British Columbian, but with a personal connection thrown in. Nash’s brother-in-law Manny Malhotra is a Canucks forward currently recovering from a serious eye injury. Nash, a Victoria native and all-star point guard with the Phoenix Suns, was at Rogers Arena for Game 2 of Vancouver’s conference final against San Jose. The 37-year-old wants to be in the building again for a Stanley Cup final involving the Canucks. After last night, he may get his chance. “I would definitely hope to make some games, Nash said yesterday during a conference call. “It would be a big disappointment if they got all the way to the final and I couldn’t make any. I’ll definitely try to get there. “The experience of Game 2 was phenomenal. The atmosphere and electricity not only in the arena, but in the city was beautiful. (I’m) extremely excited for the Canucks, as is everyone in British Columbia. The Canucks advanced to the Cup final last night, and are waiting the outcome of the Eastern Conference final. Malhotra is the husband of Nash’s sister Joann. Malhotra required two surgical procedures after he was struck in the left eye by a deflected puck during a game against Colorado on March 16. The Canucks declared Malhotra’s season over, but the 30-year-old forward has been skating with the team during their playoff run and wears a full shield to protect his eye. “He’s an amazing guy and obviously you want the best for anybody in that situation, but in particular a guy who is as classy and as good a person as Manny, Nash said. Keith Ballard battles with San Jose’s Ryane Clowe last night.

Doing his part Important for Ballard to be a good teammate even though he’s not playing in most games The best Vancouver Canuck playoff run in years has not always been a happy time for defenceman Keith Ballard. Ballard has done more watching than playing for the Canucks this spring. That has forced the former first-round draft pick to put the team first while swallowing his pride. “It’s tough when you come into the locker-room after a game, a big win, Ballard said prior to the Canucks’ 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 of the NHL Western Conference final yesterday.

“You are in a suit. Everybody else, you have seen the commitment they have shown on the ice. You, as a player, want so bad to be out there with them and be part of that. It’s definitely hard. Heading into last night, a healthy Ballard had dressed for just eight of the Canucks’ 17 playoffs games. He has no points while averaging 12:58 of ice time. Ballard has managed to keep his personal disappointment under wraps as the Canucks have made the push to win their first Cup. “You have to be a good

teammate, said the softspoken, 28-year-old from Baudette, Minn. “You can’t walk around with a bad attitude or be upset or pout. “We are all pulling for the same thing. I am as happy as the next guy for when the guys who are playing do a great job. When we win, that’s part of being a team. Canuck coach Alain Vigneault praised Ballard’s character. “He’s like the rest of the group, he wants to win, said Vigneault. “I’m sure he’d like to play on a nightly basis. THE CANADIAN PRESS

‘I think this time we’re going to do it’ Canucks fans measure their anticipation in years. Before they advanced last night, it had been 17 since Vancouver last made it to the Stanley Cup final, losing the 1994 series to the New York Rangers. And 41 since the Canucks joined the NHL, during which they have yet to actually win the Stanley Cup. They are numbers dutifully repeated by jerseydraped fans in Vancouver as the city prepared for Game 5. “For 40 years I’ve been a Canucks fan, it’s been ups and downs over the years, we’ve been close before, said Barb Timewell, who wore a Canucks jersey to the office yesterday before heading to a local pub after work to watch the Game 5. “I think this time we’re going to do it. The Canucks finished

the series in five games, and the celebrations that have marked each playoff win were expected to reach new heights after the 3-2, double-overtime win. Hockey jerseys were easy to spot in the city’s downtown in the hours before the puck dropped. Flags hung inside local restaurants and flapped out windows of passing cars, while the iconic lions on the city’s Lions Gate Bridge were wearing jerseys of their own. Someone plastered posters to downtown light posts with an image of the Stanley Cup along with the mantra, “Stay positive, and city buses that normally take passengers along the popular Granville Street entertainment district were re-routed in anticipation of the playoff celebrations. Fuel-economy

Two sturdy styles

Traction

The fuel-economy issue is crucial since all other Land Rover/Range Rover models are inherently thirsty beasts. For example, the best that either the V8-powered Range Rover or its Range Rover Sport relation can muster is 17.3 l/100 km in the city and 11.2 on the highway. Although the Evoque’s actual numbers have yet to be published, its 240horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, sourced from Ford, will be a relative gas miser.

When ogling the attractive two- and fourdoor body styles, it’s difficult to believe that the Evoque is the real deal when tackling the kind of off-road terrain that made its iconic ancestors so desirable. With its short front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, the odds of becoming hung up on uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog would seem remote.

Traction is supplied by a full-time allwheel-drive system with an electronically controlled centre differential that varies torque between the front and rear wheels depending on where the grip is greatest. The Evoque’s underpinnings can be supplemented with an adjustable Adaptive Dynamics option that offers either a soft or firm (sporty) ride.

“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and

boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s

steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable endurance. Although the Evoque arrives this fall in multi-terrain-capable condition, high style at a good price is where this Range Rover really shines.

The Evoque appears more like a sport wagon derivative of a compact passenger car, especially in two-door livery. It’s slightly shorter than a Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, or Jeep Patriot and about 45 centimetres shorter than a Range Rover Sport. As well, with its steeply

raked windshield and tapered roofline, it can also lay claim to being one of the slinkiest, wind-cheating-est rigs around. With a starting price in the $50,000 range, the Evoque should provoke fresh patrons to consider a Range Rover to carry them down a decidedly different path.

HAPPINESS IS NEW, BIG, SHINY WHEELS AUTO PILOT MIKE GOETZ DRIVE @METRONEWS.CA

W

hat’s the most efficient way to both beatify your vehicle and upgrade its performance? Simple. Get out of the car and let someone else drive... someone who’s better looking and a faster driver. If that’s not going to work for you, consider the second-best option — a new set of wheels and tires. A well-chosen set of alloy rims fitted with aggressive tires looks awesome. And because they are lighter, stronger, and put

more and stiffer rubber on the road than your stock pieces, your vehicle’s handling dynamics will substantially improve as well. It’s a no-brainer. But before you jump in the pool, may we suggest these safety tips, gleamed from our conversation with Param Johl, owner and operator of Megawheelz in Mississauga, Ont., (megawheelz.com). Megawheelz stocks over 5,000 wheels at any given time. The staff sees a lot of wheel consumers, from serious customizers, to those contemplating their first wheel upgrade. When they see those in the latter group, staff often start the consultation process with a reality check. Johl notes that 20inch and larger wheels are certainly in vogue and captivating, but that doesn’t mean they should go on everything, particularly smaller cars.

building a show car, or a “People see these large hobby car for occasional rims on the SUVs and preening around the ‘hood, trucks of their buddies and forget about “Dub” wheels. want them for their (Dub became the famous vehicles too ... but if they short form of “double have a small car, we have dime,” a cooler way of to explain that it is just not referring to tires that are going to work for them.” 20 inches or larger.) For one thing, a small For a daicar will need sheet metal ly and other modifications to accommodate 20inchers. For another, huge rims necessitate extremely low profile tires, and that combination, while visually overthe-top, means the vehicle will ride hard — very hard — Concept One's new Executive like you’re riding wheel line is designed for on wheels of luxury cars, and features a chrome stainless steel lip. concrete. So unless you’re

driver, Johl suggests “plus one” or “plus two” sizing. For a vehicle that comes stock with 15-inch wheels, that means upgrading to 16-inch or 17-inch wheel/tire sets. The rims are bigger and more beautiful, but by fitting them with tires with shorter sidewalls (called low-profile tires), the new tire is able to retain the same diameter as the original one. This is crucial, because over-sized wheels/tires can cause problems with suspension travel, and various computer systems for braking, shifting and instrumentation. There is a bewildering array of wheel designs out there. While the big brands, (American Racing, Foose, O.Z., etc.) continue to set the fashion pace, many smaller brands have

entered the market, offering cheaper takes on hit designs and cool designs of their own. Many websites have 3-D configurators, so you can visualize your ride with all the possibilities. Johl noted that matte, anodized and painted finishes are currently popular. But he adds that the king of bling, chrome, continues to have its fans, even though the chroming process adds considerable weight to an alloy wheel. A good quality alloy wheel set, with good quality rubber, from a reputable and professional wheel shop, will set you back about $1,100 to $1,200. You can pay more of course, or less. Like your choice of design, it’s all up to you. Express yourself. Then roll slowly through the neighbourhood, with the window down and a face that says, “Don’t hate us because we’re beautiful.”

Keeping just the right temperature The Ford Focus Electric, launching next year, uses thermal management technology on batteries

DRIVING FORCE JIL MCINTOSH DRIVE@METRONEWS.CA

Batteries are a lot like people: they don’t function as efficiently if they’re too cold or too hot. With an allelectric vehicle, keeping the battery at its optimum temperature helps to im-

prove charging and increase the vehicle’s range. For its upcoming Focus Electric, scheduled to launch in Canada next year, Ford uses thermal management technology, a liquid heating and cooling system that works when the car’s lithium-ion battery is plugged in and charging. “Batteries like to stay around 20 to 30C,” says Sherif Marakby, director of

electrification programs and engineering for Ford. “The performance of a cold battery is worse than a warm one.” Ford’s system uses a mixture of water and antifreeze that circulates across the cells inside the battery pack. It’s sealed, so owners don’t have to check it or top it up. It’s also engineered for safety. The water flows through separate

channels across the battery surface, and goes nowhere near electrical components. Depending on the outside temperature, the system uses either a heating element to warm the fluid, or a heat exchanger to cool it, along with a pump to circulate it. Once the vehicle is plugged in to charge, the system determines if the battery needs to be heated or cooled. If so, it activates,

getting its power strictly from the wall outlet. “It only happens while it’s charging,” Marakby says. “We manage that automatically, so the customer doesn’t have to do anything. They just plug in the vehicle. In extreme temperatures the chemistry and the battery cells have limitations on how far and how fast they can charge. This system, allows

the maximum performance from a charge standpoint. You can put more charge into the battery in extremely cold temperatures, and more range.” Marakby says that liquid cooling is more effective for regulating lithium-ion battery temperatures than an air-cooling system on the larger, more complex battery packs used in electric cars.

A long lifespan is a good thing TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series are inexpensive and solid used truck buys

SECOND GEAR

What’s the 4-1-1 Model: 1998 to 2007 Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series Vehicle Type: Pickup

JUSTIN PRITCHARD DRIVE@METRONEWS.CA

The Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series pickups might be the longest-lived models on the Canadian market. With a lifespan from 1998 to 2010, these small, cross-branded pickups lived from 1998 to 2010 with minimal changes. Cheap, capable and reliable, they offered plenty of selection to shoppers after anything from a simple two-wheel drive work truck to a nicely loaded 4x4. Low used prices and good overall reliability make these trucks worthy contenders for your used

pickup dollars. Selection is tremendous. Depending on the year and model selected, used shoppers can look for numerous engine, transmission, drivetrain and body configurations. Also depending on the year and model in question, feature content included such goodies as tire pressure monitoring, tip-up rear seats, ABS brakes, fog lamps, chrome accents and power accessories. Engine options included a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 120 horsepower, and

Mazda B-Series

both three and four-litre V6 units with 150 or 160 horsepower, respectively. From 2001 and on, a new four-litre V6 engine ramped output up to 200 horsepower. What Owners Like

Owners seem most satisfied with the styling, comfort, interior space, legroom, offroad capability and overall value of their trucks. Depending on the model in question, ride quality is also highly rated, and depending on the equipped

engine, some owners even report good fuel mileage. Confident trailer towing and 4x4 operation round out the package. What Owners Dislike

Common complaints include small rear seats, subpar power output with the smaller engines, a bouncy ride (depending on the model), excessive fuel consumption with the larger engines, and a big turning circle. “Clumsy” rear doors and limited headroom for taller

drivers and passengers round out the list of common complaints. Common Issues

Check your potential used Ranger or B-Series for rust at the rear cab corners, lower portions of the doors, driver’s floor board, around the wheelwells, on the bottom of the tailgate, and on the corners of the roof. Owner’s forums also suggest checking for cracks or leaks from the differentials and transfer case. Ensure the transfer case

switches between its various drive modes as outlined in the owner’s manual, and note that any unwelcomed vibrations or sounds from beneath the vehicle could be the result of a worn out or damaged suspension component or driveshaft. Finally, note the quality of the gear shift between second and third on models with the automatic transmission. If the transmission feels like its slipping or “flaring” during said shift, there’s likely a problem with a gearshift solenoid in the transmission. The Verdict

Search for as new a used model as possible, and note that a Ford or Mazda mechanic will be familiar with how to search for any potential issues. The low price of a used Ranger or B-Series, as well as its overall value and looks will be its biggest draw.
