Four barns and the hens inside were destroyed after a commercial fire in northeast Calgary yesterday afternoon that will leave the province without half its egg production. “I saw smoke from the highway and immediately thought fire,” said Wesley Dougan, a truck driver who delivers to the farm. Fire crews were called out to the Sparks Egg Farm at Range Road 283 shortly after 1:30 p.m. yesterday, and the fire burned throughout the afternoon, according to fire marshal Garth Rabel of the Rockyview fire department. At this time, fire officials were unable to speculate on the cause of the blaze. Although Rabel did add that “the barns were all married

together, so they all burned together.” Rabel praised Spark’s fire marshal for evacuating all 80 employees from the facility without any injuries. “They had a good fire plan and fortunately managed to evacuate all the employees and get them onto busses,” he said. The fire department did manage to save the housing and workshops on the property. “This facility produced about half of Alberta’s eggs (and) between 15,000 and 30,000 hens, depending on the timing,” said David Webb, the marketing communications co-ordinator for Alberta Egg Producers. “Our other farms do have extra capacity, so that will help compensate for the loss of this farm,” Webb added.
