One day after both the anniversary of Edward Cornwallis’ landing in Chebucto and National Aboriginal Day, one the former Nova Scotia governor’s namesakes. The Halifax Regional School Board voted unanimously last night to change the name of Cornwallis Junior High School on Preston Street in Halifax. Kirk Arsenault — the Mi’kmaq representative on the board — brought forward the motion to change the name of the school, saying the name was “deeply offensive to members of our Mi’kmaq communities.” “I consider this a victory for our community,” Arsenault told reporters after the vote. “What I want this to be is an exercise in healing and education. I don’t want any bad feelings in this. But I do celebrate the victory for the Mi’kmaq community.” Cornwallis was the English colonel credited with the founding of Halifax in 1749. mous “scalping proclamation,” authorizing a bounty on the scalps of Mi’kmaq men, women and children. Mi’kmaq historian and author Daniel Paul has lobbied for 25 years to remove Cornwallis’ name from the school, as well as other public places including a street and a park. “I’m very delighted tonight to see this happen,” Paul said. “I feel like dancing in the street, but I’m too old for that.” Paul said he hopes the HRSB decision will start a “push to (start) correcting other things that should be corrected.”
Silence No representatives from the school spoke at last night’s meeting. Also, no one argued against the motion.
Students walk into Cornwallis Junior High School yesterday. The school will have a new name in September.
