Ford not ruling out Pride ANDREW FRANCIS WALLACE /TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Mayor’s stand-in heckled and booed at the raising of the Pride flag over city hall ANDREW FRANCIS WALLACE/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
After spending the morning with Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, who is marching in this year’s Pride parade to honour his late son, Mayor Rob Ford finally opened the door to some participation in the huge gay-pride celebration. “One day at a time,” Ford told reporters yesterday when asked if he will go to any activities during the 10-day festival. The event began Friday and ends Sunday with a parade expected to be attended by hundreds of thousands of Torontonians and visitors. Ford emerged from his office wearing a Leafs jersey and said he spent the morning touring the ACC with Burke. Asked if Burke invited Ford to join in marching with family members of gays and lesbians, the mayor said: “It was a confidential meeting.” Burke’s son Brendan was killed in a car accident in February 2010, not long after the 21-year-old former goalie, working with a topranked university hockey program, went public with the fact he is gay. Brian Burke’s acceptance of his son’s orientation was heralded

across the continent. He marched in last year’s Pride parade to honour his son’s memory. “Pride isn’t just a queer issue, it’s a community issue. And it’s a giant ‘screw you’ to the city to not turn up,” said Erin Filby, a 32-yearold self-described “heterosexual housewife” who lives in the Church-Wellesley area. Ford has said he cannot attend Sunday’s parade because he has an annual family commitment at his cottage. Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday, among others, has suggested that Rob Ford attend a nonparade event to quell accusations he is homophobic. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

United Way invests $78.7M in Toronto ANDREW WALLACE/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
The United Way will offer its member agencies special one-time grants as it invests a record $78.7 million in Toronto this year. The funding is buoyed by the organization’s 2010 fundraising campaign, which raised a record $113.2 million. United Way Toronto
president and CEO Susan McIsaac announced details yesterday during the charity’s annual general meeting at the Royal York hotel. McIsaac said a one-time grant will be available to each of its member agencies on top of their annual funding. They will be eligible for grants of up to two
per cent of their operating budgets — a total investment of $1 million across 150 member agencies. The organization froze agency allocations during the recession, with the freeze continuing until the end of this year, McIsaac said.

THIRD-LARGEST EXPENSE
City debt $4.4B and climbing The City of Toronto’s net debt increased almost 20 per cent in 2010, to $4.4 billion at the end of the year. The increase means that paying off principal and interest will continue to be the third-biggest expense facing taxpayers, said Coun. Doug Holyday. The police department’s budget, almost $1 billion, represents the single-
news: toronto biggest expense, followed by the TTC. Payments on the city’s debt are expected to total more than $400 million this year — more than the $370-million cost of operating the fire department. The debt grew by $721 million in 2010; as of Dec. 31, 2009, it was $3.7 billion. A staff report said one factor that drove up debt was the $253 million borrowed to repair Toronto Community Housing Corp. units. The housing company, which has 58,000 units, has warned the repair backlog continues to grow. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Court rules judge had bias in woman’s trial
LUCAS OLENIUK/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Deemed a rare move, judge thrown off case after refusing to postpone a trial for a woman fighting cancer In a rare decision last week, the Ontario Superior Court has removed a lower court judge from a case for “bias” after refusing to postpone the trial of a young Toronto woman fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Peter Thorning, Torontobased lawyer for Krystal Hill, had to use what’s described as an “extraordinary remedy” in law to prevent his client’s trial from going forward after a London, Ont., judge, Gregory A. Pockele, refused to postpone it in November. While Hill was waiting to learn whether six months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments for her cancer had worked, Pockele looked at her in a London courtroom on the first day of the trial, offered his sympathies, and refused
to postpone the hearings. Hill was charged in 2009 for refusing to take a breathalyzer test, weeks before her diagnosis. By the time of the trial, she could barely make the car ride to London from Toronto, let alone contemplate defending herself. Thorning went in armed with medical documentation, hoping the judge would be sympathetic. “She was in court wearing a wig,” says Thorning, a senior partner of Brauti Thorning. “She just finished chemo and radiation therapy, and the day before the trial she was basically supposed to find out if she would live, but that appointment got postponed. The system completely breaks down if every party in the courtroom doesn’t

Doctor ‘squandered’ second chance Treated female patients despite ban, watchdog told
Licence had been reinstated in 2009 after five-year suspension HENRY STANCU/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
A Peel Region doctor, accused of touching a female patient’s breast while already under a restricted licence for allegations of sexual abuse and harassment, admits he “squandered” a second chance to practise medicine. But Dr. David Stuart Lambert, who could have his licence revoked for the second time, says he did not sexually abuse the woman as she and the college claim. Lambert, who is facing the disciplinary committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario for the third time in his career, should not have even been treating female patients. It was one of the many strict limitations placed on his licence in 2009, when he was reinstated as a doctor following a five-year suspension. He was also barred from selling his various wrinkle creams to his patients, due to the conflict of interest, and he could not administer cosmetic treatments or anything not covered by OHIP. “Almost immediately upon his return to practice, Dr. Lambert repeatedly breached all of these term restrictions and limitations,” said Carolyn Silver, the college’s lawyer. Lambert pleaded guilty yesterday to the professional misconduct charges that he breached the limitations

on his licence, and not guilty to the allegation of sexual touching. Four months after Lambert’s licence was reinstated, the college sent two private investigators to Lambert’s clinic, ostensibly to receive a cosmetic medical procedure, according to allega-
tions from the college. One of the private investigators, who cannot be named, testified yesterday that Lambert “swiped” the back of his index finger across her right breast and nipple when she handed him a consent form. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Dr. Lambert In 1991, Dr. David Stuart Lambert’s licence was suspended for six months after the college found he made “a series of derogatory and demeaning comments of a sexual nature to patients.”
Then, in 2002, his licence was revoked after the college found Lambert sexually abused one female patient, made sexual remarks to two others and acted unprofessionally with another by trying to sell her skin care products.
The college decided in June 2009 to reinstate Lambert’s licence, albeit with very strict conditions. He was only allowed to treat adult male patients, had to see a therapist, practise under supervision, and refrain from selling skin care products.
Danforth’s ‘big hole’ filled with mixed blessings RICHARD LAUTENS/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Neighbours call it the “big hole” — an empty, weedridden plot of land with a torrid history that sits on the Danforth Avenue near Woodbine Avenue. A massive fire in 2001, one of the biggest in Toronto’s history, destroyed Woodbine Building Supply, the empty lot’s former occupant. One arsonist died in the fire and another was seriously injured. John Magno, 53, one of three brothers who coowned the store, has been
charged with second-degree murder, accused of hiring others to organize the blaze. Yesterday, the jury began its deliberations. During the trial, the prosecution alleged Magno did it for the insurance money. But there’s another twist: The brothers also own JFC Properties, the company behind a bid to build new condos in the “big hole.” Before the fire, the brothers had made plans to demolish the store and build condos on the lot. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Condo construction on the “big hole” on the Danforth, the former site of Woodbine Building Supply at 2055 Danforth, will begin this summer.

The condo development will include street-level retail spaces and has been touted as a way to increase foot traffic for local businesses.

The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday refused to let California regulate the sale or rental of violent video games to children, saying governments do not have the power to “restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed” despite complaints about graphic violence. John Baird said the group preparing to take power once Libya’s dictator, Moammar Gadhafi, is ousted has a strong dedication to democracy. But he added no one should expect that transition to take place overnight. Baird’s trip to rebel-held Benghazi was his first major one as foreign minister, aside from a jaunt to the G8 summit in France last month. It came as a stalemate between Libyan dissident groups and Gadhafi forces prompted questions about whether the NATOled bombing campaign in Libya is working. “It was important to me to come here and get the facts for myself,” Baird said. Canada recently joined
European and Arab countries in recognizing the National Transitional Council as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people. Baird spent half a day in the city and met for 30 minutes with coalition leader Mahmoud Jibril, followed by a meeting with council board members. Behind closed doors, Baird presented Jibril with a letter from Prime Minister Stephen Harper inviting him to Canada to meet with officials and parliamentarians. The council is setting itself up as an alternative to Gadhafi. But some of Canada’s allies fear the council’s military strength and political know-how are too thin to do the job. THE CANADIAN PRESS

ISRAEL DELAYING AID TO Country pressuring Greece to halt flotilla to Gaza, organizers say 9 activists died in Israeli raid last year Organizers of a flotilla to challenge Israel’s sea blockade of the Gaza Strip say they will sail any day now, but are struggling to overcome delays they blame on Israeli pressure. They have held regular news conferences to talk up their campaign, but are so cautious they refuse to say where their boats are docked. Dire warnings and diplomatic sensitivities shadow the politically charged plan to deliver aid to the Palestinian territory. The looming fear is a reprise of a similar mission a year ago that ended when nine activists on a Turkish vessel died in a raid by Israeli commandos who rappelled on board from helicopters in the pre-dawn darkness. Prosecutors portray Anthony as an uncaring, hard-partying mother Courtroom drama full of twists It has become one of the most-watched murder trials since the O.J. Simpson case and has galvanized a nation with its lurid, shocking details. Indeed, the U.S. soap opera that is the Casey Anthony first-degree murder trial seems to be the only thing on all-news channels these days, and is expected to send reporters into a frenzy next week as the jury begins deliberations in the sad, sordid affair. Anthony, 25, is the nownotorious Florida mother accused of killing her twoyear-old daughter Caylee in 2008. She first made headlines when she claimed her daughter was
kidnapped by a nanny, sparking a five-month search for the little Caylee girl. Marie But invesAnthony tigators soon turned their attention to Anthony. During the five-week trial in Orlando, prosecutors alleged Anthony murdered her daughter June 16, 2008, by smothering her with chloroform to make her unconscious, and then covered her nose and mouth with duct tape to suffocate her.

he didn’t go into details. HMV has been gradually reworking many of its Canadian stores to focus on a broader selection of music- and film-related products, including T-shirts, headphones, video game controllers, mobile phones and other electronics, in an effort to curb declining revenues as disc sales weaken and more shoppers opt to download content. HMV has been in Canada since 1986 and originally sold primarily music. The retailer has been struggling to overcome the downturn in physical media sales, which has been a challenge because HMV’s brand was originally built on records, cassette tapes and CDs. BARING THE TRUTH ABOUT LINGERIE Women are better dressers than men; even when they’re undressed. Nine out of 10 men arrive JESSICA NAPIER in the bedroom clad in novelMETRO ty print boxer shorts or a pair of briefs with elastic that gave up three weeks ago. Strangely, they expect their female bedmates to put a little more effort into their costume choices. This is what keeps Victoria’s Secret in business. The bright pink lingerie mecca is an exhilarating place to be. Undergarments are mounted in displays with their own built-in lighting. Walls are lined with fragrances that have ambiguously sexy names like Fantasies, Attractions and Bombshell and all smell exactly the same. There are 11 different styles of underwear. ELEVEN. After roaming the cavernous rooms of bras and body lotions, you enter a boudoir-like dressing room that will make you feel like you’re preparing to go on stage at “For the next the Moulin Rouge. Inside the dimly lit cubicle you 30 minutes you will struggle into a corsetare the sexiest style contraption that actuwoman in the ally makes you look world. You ooze amazing. With lace, and plenty of bonsensuality as you ribbons ing, it’s possible to strut through the convince yourself that you, too, are worthy of a pair of mall; nothing angel wings. could kill your Before you know it, buzz. For the next 30 minutes you are the sexiest woman in the world. You ooze sensuality as you strut through the mall; nothing could kill your buzz. Until you get home. Back in the harsh reality of your well-lit apartment you begin to think that maybe you don’t actually look that fantastic squeezed inside this torture device masquerading as underwear. All of a sudden those feathers don’t make you look fun and flirty; they make you look like a slutty Muppet. Worst of all is the realization that nothing in your wardrobe is capable of concealing this getup. You would need to wear a burlap potato sack in order to hide the awkward lines and protruding ruffles attached to the apparatus that is now trying to suffocate you. Since real life doesn’t permit “let me slip into something more comfortable” opportunities, you will ultimately decide to ditch your fancy lingerie in favour of a practical tummy-trimming spandex number with a decidedly un-sexy name like Spanx. This, of course, will lead to the eventual Bridget Jones moment you have been dreading, where you are discovered to be the sensible, high-waist, control-top woman that you have been trying to hide all along.

Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning OTTAWA. Canadians are a talented bunch with a lot of bright ideas — but we struggle to cash in on those ideas. That’s the conclusion of a new report by an advisory body to the federal government on science and technology matters. The Science, Technology and Innovation Council’s report, to be released today in Ottawa, found Canadian businesses don’t spend nearly as much on research and development (R&D) as other countries. And that could affect Canada’s ability to turn ideas into products and services that can be sold globally. “An excellent talent pool and increased efforts by government, higher education and some industries are not preventing stagnation in Canada’s overall innovation performance,” the report says. “Despite an overall economic performance the past two years that has exceeded that of its major trading partners, the current level of effort by all performing sectors has not been sufficient to bring Canada’s expenditures in R&D to the G7 average.”

Iran ready to monkey around in space Iran says it plans to send a monkey into space next month as the next step in a space program that Western leaders worry could also bring major advances in Iran’s missile arsenal. The state-run news agency IRNA quotes the head of Iran’s space agency yesterday as say-
ing that five monkeys are undergoing tests and one will be selected for the flight on a Kavoshgar-5 — or Explorer-5 — rocket. Last year, Iran announced it had launched a rocket carrying a mouse, turtle and worms into space. The U.S. and allies are concerned the technology in the space program could also be used to develop long-range missiles with possible nuclear warheads. Iran denies it seeks nuclear arms and says it wants only energy-producing reactors. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

FESTIVAL HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Alan Jackson
Embracing music styles as varied as pop, jazz, classical, world and country music, the first annual Capital One BlackCreek Summer Music Festival offers something for everyone. The 14-week festival, which kicked off June 4, takes place at the Rexall Centre on the grounds of York University. The amphitheatre seats up to 11,000 people, depending upon seat and stage configuration for the individual performances. Jeff Melanson, Cultural Adviser to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, says that until now, the city “has not seized the opportunity to create a large-scale, outdoor summer destination for audiences to see and hear an eclectic mix of the world’s leading musicians, singers and entertainers. “BlackCreek changes that dynamic and at the highest level of artistry.” Tickets for all the concerts can be purchased at blackcreekfestival.com or by calling 1-888-860-7888. Back in the writer’s seat
Nia Vardalos teams up with Tom Hanks (again) to write Larry Crowne She dishes to Metro on working with Hanks, her latest project and heading to Winnipeg this summer
HANDOUT
NED EHRBAR
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
Actress, writer and director Nia Vardalos admits that she actually loathes writing — except when it’s for Tom Hanks, who’s been a close friend and colleague since he produced her first film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The pair teamed up for the script of Hanks’ latest, Larry Crowne, so hopefully that writing experience wasn’t too terrible. Metro caught up with the Winnipeg native to talk about working with Hanks, heading home this summer and the legacy of her breakthrough film. How is Tom as a boss?
Well, besides the alcoholic blackouts, he’s awesome (laughs). Clearly, you see him. He’s one of the most gregarious, fun-loving, well-read, interesting people I’ve ever met — who happens to be married to my fantastic friend, Rita Wilson. They’re just a stellar, shining example of people who have maintained their civility and humanity in a cesspool of an industry. And I just love them both. What makes the three of you click so well?
We’re all dorks, and we like to laugh at ourselves and each other. It’s been almost 10 years since My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Isn’t it hilarious? Just today
in Times Square, a gaggle of beautifully black-haired Japanese girls screamed when then saw me. They were all going for their cameras, and this one girl kept bowing and saying, “I am Toula! I am Toula!” That makes me cry. That’s a really cool feeling.

How have you dealt with the pressure of having such a big hit right out of the gate?
Flood relief
Some people ask me that, but I just don’t feel it. I don’t think of things that way. I’m such an optimist, I feel no pressure whatsoever. I don’t look at anything in terms of monetary success because that’s rather gauche. I just kind of look at it as that movie opened so many doors for me. I met fantastic people, I had dinner with the Queen of England and I met Elton John, and these are not things that I ever aspired to. I never even dared to hope that they would happen. So I don’t think of anything as a pressure. It’s just, “What’s next?” Nia Vardalos worked with Tom Hanks on the script for Hanks’ new film, Larry Crowne. You’re going home to Winnipeg soon to film an American Girl movie.
Yeah, I’m really excited. I’m giddy about getting the chance to go back to Winnipeg and spend some time with my family, but also that I got offered a role that I didn’t write. I think I Tweeted out that it’s another sign of the rapture. What are you looking

forward to most about going back?
I’m looking forward to hanging around with family, and my daughter having time with grandparents and cousins. And also I’m actually a huge fan of the American Girl series because they promote girl power without being anti-boy, and I
like that. I don’t believe in an us-or-them mentality. Even with Bridesmaids making such a huge splash, I didn’t see it like, “Yeah! One for the women!” That is, I feel, pandering to us. We know we’re funny. It’s one for comedy. I just love that entire movie, and that’s how I feel about American Girl
— not the same, G versus R. But, it’s about empowerment and about being your best you without it being at the expense of another of the other gender. An R-rated American Girl movie would be very interesting, though.
You’re right, you’re right. We should write that.

Barney’s Version Genre: Romantic comedy Director: Richard J. Lewis Stars: Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman 888 1⁄2
The single greatest feat of Barney’s Version may be the cohesive movie that emerges from Mordecai Richler’s shaggy horndog of a novel about a score-settling Montreal philanderer (and possible murderer). It took 12 years and much sweat for producer Robert Lantos to bring to the screen the late Richler’s final tome, which spans decades and countries plus multiple wives, a missing pal and other dilemmas. The Barney of the book,

sounding very much like Richler himself, promises us “the true story of my wasted life.” Director Richard J. Lewis and screenwriter Michael Konyves tilt toward bittersweet romantic comedy rather than whodunit, making this sprawling entertainment one of the most successful adaptations yet of a Richler novel. Paul Giamatti makes an engaging Barney, adroitly negotiating multiple femmes, meddling family and a cumbersome ghost. But a hilarious Dustin Hoffman is the real draw as Barney’s rascal dad.
Sucker Punch Genre: Fantasy action Director: Zack Snyder Stars: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone 88 1⁄2
Season of the Witch Genre: Fantasy action Director: Dominic Sena Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman 8 1⁄2
Nicolas Cage and director Dominic Sena last united 11 years ago for Gone in 60 Seconds, a heist flick remake that had the good sense to remain stupid. Cage back then was also doing fun knuckledraggers like Con Air and
Sena was not long off the juicy pulp of Kalifornia. Both had a knack for elevating trash. Now they just shovel it, as per Season of the Witch, which sets Cage and Ron Perlman as 14th-century rebel knights fighting the Black Plague, Satan and boredom. They lose that last battle. Extras include deleted scenes, an alternate ending and featurettes. PETER HOWELL

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
Alongside all of the sexy, scary, supernatural goodness that makes True Blood as addictive as V — that’s vampire blood — a couple of regular ol’ humans are making a play for the series’ best storylines. The frontrunner? Tara Thornton, played with grit and vulnerability by Ruti-
na Wesley, gets another chance to steal scenes as Season 4 started Sunday night. We checked in with the actress to find out what bad — and good! — things are in store for her this summer. Tara got mixed up with some bad vampires last season. Are things looking brighter now?
We are finally going to see happiness for Tara. Defi-
nitely some stability — she is more stable — and powerful. She has started going to the shrink and she has learned how to love herself in a way that is beautiful and secure. I think it is nice to see because we have seen her suffer so much. And she may have a smile on her face. The writers really put Tara through the wringer.
I kind of like where they have been taking me. That doesn’t happen all the time but I really trust them. They haven’t given me anything that I’ve been like, “Wait a minute.” A lot of the time, I’ve been like, “Does she have to suffer so much?” and “Do I really have to cry in every scene?” But those are challenges, and I just have to cry for 18 hours.
Zack Snyder’s latest kinetic exercise is best described as a girl-powered Sailor Moon anime crossed with Russ Meyer sexploitation. It provides sporadic seconds of splendid eye candy separated by minutes of muddled exposition and flat acting. Set in the 1950s and shot with a similar desaturated colour palette as his Spartan hit 300, it begins as our late-teen heroine Babydoll (Emily Browning) is framed as the cause of a
family tragedy. Dressed as a saucy schoolgirl, like her fellow beauties in bondage, Babydoll is sent to an insane asylum where mental illness is treated with deprivation, abuse and lobotomies. Babydoll finds virtual escape through her mind. Each time she goes into a dance trance, a different set of villains emerges: zombie German soldiers from World War I, Asian battle robots with Pinocchio noses and glowing red eyes, and so on. After a while you might wish, as I did, that you could just watch Babydoll dance. No such luck. PETER HOWELL

MS linked to low sun New study lends credibility to the theory that vitamin D a modifiable factor in disease risk Experts speculate it leads to abnormal response CELIA MILNE

It’s a wicked combination that puts people at risk for multiple sclerosis: Low levels of sunlight plus “kissing disease.” Researchers at the University of Oxford in the U.K. have found that people who live far from the equator (in countries like Canada) and have had mononucleosis are at much greater risk for developing MS. “It is an important finding because it adds weight
to the possibility that vitamin D can be considered a modifiable factor when it comes to increased MS risk,” says Karen Lee, a scientist and assistant vice president of the MS Society of Canada. Researchers in England studied records for Britain’s National Health Service over seven years; they identified 56,681 cases of MS and 14,621 cases of mono. They also studied NASA data on sun intensity over the country. They found that the effects of sun exposure plus mono together explained 72 per

Dear Charles the Butler, My wife and I have been invited for the first time to my boss’s house for dinner. We are both very nervous. We live a casual lifestyle, but my boss and his wife live very formally. Tips please! Nervous Couple
Dear Nervous couple: Going to your employer’s for dinner is stressful at the best of times. But alas, one must overcome social fears, especially if one wishes to succeed in long-term business relationships.
Brush up on the latest news, master your table manners, but most importantly, be yourself when invited over to someone’s home for dinner.
Etiquette is about confidence building, allowing you to be comfortable in most situations. As a child, my parents laboured tirelessly to teach me table manners — no fingers even for chicken wings! I fought them both tooth and nail. Soon enough I noticed that when I went to my friends’ houses for dinner, their parents would say, “Why can’t you learn to eat correctly like Charles?” And
that made me feel proud and confident. Here is all you need to know to enjoy dinner with your boss — with confidence. 1. Take the time to learn how to correctly hold and use a fork and a knife — and practice, practice practice. If at any point you don’t know what to do, take a deep breath and follow the hostess. 2. Derek says... Some people are completely unaware of boundaries, though I’m sure that would have materialized before now. If talking doesn’t work, you may need to employ some digital revenge. Just be prepared for a change in her Facebook relationship status. What’s your stance on PDA?
Angela says ... Context is everything when it comes to public displays of affection. A couple in an embrace at the airport can warm the heart. Add heat or cool it down — surviving summer love Metro speaks with a handful of love experts who offer five steps for enjoying a steamy hot summer romance KARIN WASTESON
LIFE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS
1
How to find the right type for a summer fling:
Since it’s summer, any
terrain will be well stocked with holidaying hotties. “Whatever the activity is, tell your love interest you’d enjoy meeting up at some specific event,” says Leil Lowndes, author
of How to Make Anyone Fall in Love With You.
2
How to write a sexy text: Now is the time
to get sexual with the written word. Or at least
the typed version. Swedish relationship specialist Eva Rusz recommends you be anatomical in your prose. “Describe what body part you really long for,” she advises. But remember:
“It can be as sexy to swoon for a person’s brain as a person’s private area.”
3
How to overcome jealousy: Even on a far-
flung vacation, jealousy can rear its ugly head. But as Simone Bienne, a TV relationship expert in the U.K., advises: “when a jealous thought creeps into your mind, shout stop. This can be super effective in managing your problem.”
4
How to know when it’s time to cool your summer romance: When
the alluring mystique of your holiday lover is no longer there, then it’s high time to end the romance in a swift and painless manner. “If you no longer feel excited to see the person, if you are no longer intrigued by him or her, then you’d better call off the relationship,” says Blaire Allison, the self-proclaimed “initiative heart
healer” and blogger of LoveGuru.net.
5
How to write a love letter: But if the embers
of your fiery summer romance still glow a little, how about rekindling that flame with a traditional, far-from-cheesy love letter? “Firstly, spell the person’s name correctly. Anything after calling ‘Ellen’ ‘Susan’ won’t matter,” warns Bill Shapiro, former editor of Life magazine and author of Other People’s Love Letters: 150 Letters You Were Never Meant to See. “The letters with the most resonance are those that capture a specific moment and how you thought about the person. Honesty counts for so much. ‘Jesus, I love your smile’, or ‘every time you walk towards me, I feel something’. You want to catch the spirit of the meeting right away when you put pen to paper,” Shapiro says.
TROJAN, NAKED SENSATIONS, FIRE & ICE and the Warrior Head logo are Trademarks of Church & Dwight Co., Inc.
Ahh, this feels nice. Creating extra sizzle in a summer romance is much easier than you think, say the pros.

7 drawbacks of working at home ISTOCK IMAGES

ALISON GRIFFITHS
Nearly 12 per cent of all paid employees in Canada work at home.

I’ve worked at home for more than 25 years and almost everyone I know who doesn’t, envies me. There are workplace benefits galore: short commute, no wardrobe issues, few distractions, no time clock and excellent coffee. But it’s not Shangri-La. So as a public service to all you work-at-home wannabes, here is a list of drawbacks.
This can range from unexpected and unwanted dropins during prime work hours to family calling for a lengthy chinwag.
Alison’s money rule: Make working from home effective with a strict schedule and a do not disturb sign.
2. No water cooler! It can get lonely with no coworkers for time-wasting chats. I’ve found myself trying to keep delivery people hanging around for company. Sure you can take a break or vacation any time you want, but when you’re not working you don’t get paid. Most self-employed people I know rarely take holidays. And sick days? Forget about it!
4. The office is always open. Nights and weekends are fair game because the office is right there. Even on a Sunday morning an unfinished job seems to find you and push the guilt button. And employers know you’re there so they don’t hesitate to call outside normal office hours.
5. Hey! I’m working here! Guests never seem to get it that you have a job to do

employer fired him for dishonesty. Can you blame them? References
DANIEL LUBLIN
I am often asked whether it is “legal” for a former employer to provide a negative reference. Generally, the answer is yes. As long as an opinion is honestly provided, the individual providing it cannot be successfully sued, even if you disagree with what was said. Further, when you provide the name of a reference to a prospective employer, you implicitly provide permission to contact him or her.
DAN@TORONTOEMPLOYMENTLAWYER.COM TWITTER: @DANLUBLIN
As the boundaries between employees’ personal and work lives become increasingly blurred, we receive more and more questions about the boundaries of privacy in the workplace. Consider this your cheat sheet on some of the more commonly asked questions at work: Medical information
Does your employer have a “right” to your entire medical history when you request a medical leave? The answer is no. An employer has a right to know when

Surveillance
There is generally no “right” to privacy in the workplace, although there are exceptions. Surveillance evidence, for example, can only be used if there is a reasonable basis to justify it, such as employee theft, and after ap-
propriate warnings. In a recent Ontario case, the court found that a hidden camera secretly installed in a manager’s office had no basis to be there and awarded an employee severance even though she had resigned. Workplace computers
While there is no right to privacy in personal information held in employer’s computers, an appellate court recently concluded that information within personal computers used for work does not belong to your employer. Although the distinction seems subtle, this ruling could extend to personal BlackBerrys and cellphones, meaning that whoever owns the device owns all of the contents, regardless of what it is used for. (teammate Robin Gayle) said, ‘You can scrap it off your bucket list, you trended last night.’ I said, ‘I don’t even know what that means,’” Sinclair said with a laugh. But while the 28-yearold from Burnaby, B.C., might have been big news Sunday night, she wanted little to do with the spotlight the next day — especially if there were cameras involved. She met with a small group of reporters in a hotel lobby,
“It was painful, but there was so much adrenalin.” CHRISTINE SINCLAIR
but paused when she walked off the elevator and spotted a camera. “There is nothing good about this,” Sinclair said, pointing to her nose and frowning. Sinclair had her nose broken by a hard elbow from Germany’s Babett Peter, but stayed in the game — against the wishes of
the team’s medical staff. She had her nose reset in a Berlin hospital, and spent yesterday morning being fitted for a protective face mask. She isn’t thrilled with the thought of actually wearing it Thursday when the sixthranked Canadians face No. 7 France in a game Canada can’t afford to lose. “I’m going to try to convince (the medical staff) to not make me wear it,” Sinclair said. “I’ve heard it’s not fun to wear. Your vi-
sion is limited.” The mask is similar to the one worn by Italian soccer star Marco Materazzi or Detroit Pistons guard Richard Hamilton. For now, she has a fleshcoloured hard brace protecting her nose. Sinclair shrugged off talk of being a big deal back home. “No, I have no idea, it’s been a hectic day,” she said. “I haven’t even called my parents yet.” THE CANADIAN PRESS
“I expect a real motivated, real focused guy, and a guy whose body and his injury is ready to go. He’s really well beyond (ready), so I think he’ll be at full-go coming into training camp and really motivated.” PENGUINS COACH DAN BYLSMA ON STAR CENTRE EVGENI MALKIN, WHO HE SAYS IS PROBABLY “ALREADY READY TO GO” FOR THE START OF NEXT SEASON FOLLOWING
Dodgers file for bankruptcy protection One of baseball’s proudest franchises is in tatters, its future to be decided not on the field but in the courtroom. The Los Angeles Dodgers filed for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court yesterday, blaming Major League
Baseball for refusing to approve a multibillion-dollar TV deal that owner Frank McCourt was counting on to keep the troubled franchise afloat. McCourt, upset that baseball commissioner Bud Selig rejected the proposed TV deal last week,
hopes a federal judge will approve $150 million US in financing to be used for daily operations, which would give him more time to seek a more favourable media contract. A hearing is set for today in Wilmington, Del. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

and Shawn Camp came in to relieve Rzepczynski. Peralta sliced a liner into the right-centre gap and Jose Bautista missed an attempt at a sliding catch. The ball rolled to the wall before centre-fielder Rajai Davis could retrieve it, giving Peralta a standup triple. After the Blue Jays intentionally walked Alex Avila, Ryan Raburn beat out a
double-play ball to drive in the fourth run. Jose Valverde earned his 18th save in as many attempts. Toronto put two on in the ninth, but Juan Rivera hit into a game-ending double play. Toronto’s Zach Stewart gave up two runs in six innings and Adam Lind hit his 16th homer for the Blue Jays. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
