The face of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics is now tasked with reviewing the Stanely Cup riot that tarnished the city’s image — an image he helped build. Former VANOC CEO John Furlong and former Nova Scotia deputy attorney general Doug Keefe were officially named cochairs of the independent review of this month’s riot. They are tasked with investigating the planning and operations of the province, the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Police Department before and during the Game 7 riot. “I think there are important questions circulating in the community and I think people want answers,” Furlong told media yes-

terday. “The advantage I have here is I have good working knowledge of many of the agencies and partners.” One of the biggest questions surrounding the riot is the level of
police deployment on that night. Vancouver police have refused to release operational details — even to Mayor Gregor Robertson — but Keefe is confident he’ll have access to those plans. Whether he chooses to release that information publicly is a different matter. “There are very good reasons why the police do not give out operational details,” said Keefe. “I would caution people not to get hung up on watching a number. The real question is the adequacy of the deployments.” Keefe said he is particularly interested in seeing how much of the advice after the 1994 riot was heeded in the planning for this year’s Stanley Cup run. The pair have until Aug. 31 to file their report, which will contain recommendations on preventing similar incidents in the future.
