Two York police officers embrace yesterday at the family visitation for Const. Garrett Styles at the Jerrett Funeral Home on Yonge Street. Today, the widow of the fallen officer will say goodbye in one of two eulogies for her husband during funeral services in Newmarket, her husband’s hometown. More than 6,000 police officers from across North America are expected to attend the funeral, the second for a GTA police officer in the last six months. RENE JOHNSTON/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Thousands of officers to mourn fallen constable
Today’s funeral procession for Const. Garrett Styles, 32, will begin at about 10:30 a.m. from the Upper Canada Mall at Yonge Street and Davis Drive. Sixty to 100 GTA police officers on motorcycles will escort the hearse and the vehicles of Styles’ family members. York Const. Kevin Ban, a close friend of Styles, will march immediately behind the cars and carry the fallen officer’s cap. Thousands of officers, led by Styles’ platoon mates, will march in formation behind Ban, south down Yonge Street toward the Ray Twinney Complex. Yonge Street will be closed from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., from Kingston Road to Eagle Street, to accommodate the procession. Styles’ children — nine-week-old son Nolan and two-year-old daughter Meredith — are expected to attend the service with their mother Melissa, who has not spoken publicly since her husband’s death.

Bathurst station ranked No. 3 on transit romance index
Montreal stations ranked 1 and 2
TONY BOCK/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Montreal officially has the most crush-worthy commuters in Canada. By “officially,” it means Craigslist researchers have decreed Montreal’s LionelGroulx Metro station the most romantic transit stop in the country. Toronto’s Bathurst station trails well behind on the love-o-meter, pulling in only a 4.95 on the TRIST (train romance index score total) scale, compared to 8.95 for LionelGroulx, and landing in third place overall. Montreal’s Saint-Lau-
rent was No. 2. The survey, “Love on the Line,” analyzes a year’s worth of “Missed Connections” personal ads on Craigslist that mention individual subway, Metro or rapid transit stations in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto. The TRIST scale is tallied by dividing the number of Missed Connections mentions at each station or line by the daily ridership, and then multiplying by 10,000 and rounding to two decimal places.
Jessica Martin
Back in November, Craigslist declared Bathurst station as the most romantic in Toronto.
So where did Toronto’s love train derail compared to Montreal? “I would say Montrealers are a bit more laid back. We have a very relaxed lifestyle,” suggested Matthew (last name withheld to protect his air of mystery), who is originally from Montreal but lives in Toronto and is among those romantically inclined TTC riders. His post to a tall, plaidhatted hottie at Bathurst — “You waved and smiled at me as you left the TTC wagon” — sadly came to
no avail. When told of Bathurst’s No. 3 standing, TTC spokeswoman Jessica Martin replied: “Oh no!” But she didn’t begrudge Montrealers their mobile mack sessions. “I think it’s wonderful that people are finding romance on transit and whatever city you choose to do that in, I support it,” said Martin, who has herself exchanged a few meaningful glances on the TTC but never been so bold as to act on them. Greeks disable Gaza-bound ship
JIM RANKIN/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Activists say armed coast guard officers boarded Canadian ship, soldiers took command of its bridge The Greek coast guard has crippled a Canadian ship bound for Gaza, forcing it back to shore and ramming it against a cement pier, activists said yesterday. Activists on board say the ship appears to be sinking and they are calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government to intervene. The Tahrir, bearing at least 30 Canadians, left a Greek port early last night and was boarded 15 minutes later by armed officers from the Greek coast guard. Within an hour, the ship was back at another Greek port, where supporters of its mission were gathering. “They arrived back to land into a location ... where the coast guard
forced them to go to. Not the original dock,” said Ehab Lotayef, a Montrealbased spokesman for the ship. “They slammed it into the concrete, into the pierside. At the beginning it wasn’t obvious, but now there is big probability the boat is sinking. It got damaged in that slam. It’s taking water, leaking diesel.” Lotayef said efforts were underway to get passengers off the boat. “We are holding the Greeks responsible for all that — totally unjustified action by the Greek government, arm-twisted by the Israelis,” he said. “It is a setback but it’s not the end of the road.”
The Canadian boat made a run for open water yesterday morning. Delegates from Canada, Australia, Belgium, Denmark and Turkey are on the Tahrir, the Canadian boat participating in Freedom Flotilla II to Gaza.

CIA analyst hunted bin Laden for nearly a decade
Knack for the job
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
After U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden, the White House released a photo of U.S. President Barack Obama and his cabinet inside the Situation Room, watching the raid unfold. Hidden from view of that now-famous photo was a career CIA analyst. In
the hunt for the world’s most-wanted terrorist, there may have been no one more important. His job for nearly a decade was finding the al-Qaida leader. “John” (his middle name) oversaw the collection of clues that led the agency to a fortified compound in Ab-

bottabad, Pakistan. He examined and re-examined every aspect of bin Laden’s life. How did he live while hiding in Sudan? With whom did he surround himself while living in Kandahar, Afghanistan? What would a bin Laden hideout look like today?
The CIA had a list of potential leads, associates and family members who might have access to bin Laden. “Just keep working that list bit by bit,” one senior intelligence official recalls John telling his team. “He’s there somewhere. We’ll get there.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
“John’s” ability to spot the importance of seemingly insignificant details gave him a particular knack for hunting terrorists. “I knew he was the guy in the room I always listened to,” a former counterterrorism boss said.

Police had been charged with killing protesters during uprising Hundreds cut traffic for six hours on highway GETTY IMAGES FILE
Riots erupt in Egypt.
“They are trying to deceive the people to pacify them,” said the lawyer Amin Ramez. “The policemen are now at army headquarters seeking protection. If people saw them, they would tear them apart.” Ali el-Ganadi, a father of one of the victims, said he received a promise from the prosecutor general to enforce the annulment of the court’s order and bring the officers back to jail. Relatives of slain protesters, who were involved in the unrest, cut traffic on the highway from Cairo to the city of Suez, leaving hundreds of cars lined up. After clearing the highway, protesters moved to inside Suez, according to one of the protesters, Ahmed Khafagi. He said
The policemen 17 were charged with killing 17 people and injuring more than 350 in the city of Suez during the 18-day uprising that ended Feb. 11. The court released seven of them on bail and postponed their trials to Sept. 14. Three are tried in absentia. traffic was halted inside two main squares in the city and thousands of people are holding protests and chanting slogans. Suez was a flashpoint of violence during the uprising, with many deadly confrontations between protesters and security forces. Footage posted on YouTube showed policemen at the top of a police station in Suez main square opening fire on protesters. The release of the policemen looked likely to fuel plans for a one-millionman rally Friday to push for fair trials of former regime members including top security officials suspected of giving the orders to shoot protesters. Ukraine’s former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, went on trial yesterday in a case that has raised concerns in the West over the government’s commitment to democracy. Hundreds of Egyptians attacked a courtroom in Cairo yesterday, scuffled with security guards, and blocked a major highway for hours after the court ordered the release of 10 policemen charged with killing protesters during the country’s uprising. The unrest added to tensions already running high in Egypt over the ruling military council’s failure to hold accountable security forces involved in killing protesters during the uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak. Nearly five months later, only one policeman has been convicted in the deaths of more than 846 people killed in a government crackdown on protesters. He was tried in absentia. After the riots broke out, Egypt’s prosecutor general, Mahmoud Abdel-Meguid, ordered the court’s decision overturned in a clear attempt to defuse anger. However, a lawyer for the victims’ families said such a decision is “illegal” because the prosecutor general has no authority over the court.

Did princess try to flee? Reports say Charlene bolted after rumours Albert sired another love child the last minute, various reports said. French magazines reported confirmation by palace sources that Albert, 53, will undergo DNA tests because of claims that he has fathered another illegitimate child. He already has a son and daughter from previous affairs. The rumours about Princess Charlene, 33, start-
ed just days before the wedding when the French newspaper L’Express reported the bride tried to bolt three times: Once during the Monaco Grand Prix; another time in Paris when she holed up at the South African Embassy; and a week before the wedding when her passport was confiscated at Nice airport. Princess Charlene’s fa-
ther, Mike Wittstock, said his daughter was shopping in Paris with her mother, not seeking asylum. The palace has also denied the allegations. “There is no child,” said lawyer Thierry Lacoste. “I heard everything about the child — white, black, who has been born, not yet born. It has to stop.”

Will and Kate enjoy royal soaking in P.E.I. Couple face off in dragon boat race Prince William practises ‘waterbirding’ search-and-rescue exercise When most people envision a day on the water, it doesn’t generally involve full-blown dragon boats or a multimillion-dollar piece of military hardware. Of course, most people aren’t the future king and queen of England. Prince William traded navy blue for drab olive and the luxury of a landau for the throb of a Sea King helicopter yesterday as he donned a flight suit and practised a quintessentially Canadian manoeuvre — landing on the water. Later, he and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, grabbed paddles and life vests for a dragon boat showdown that left William a fairly drenched victor and his wife with

more than one faceful of paddle spray — a cautionary tale about sitting in the stern. That might be why they seemed utterly unfazed when the traditional Maritime weather showed up, sprinkling both the royals and the gathered throngs of fans and well-wishers as they shook hands, sampled lobster, participated in a traditional smudging ceremony and watched Acadian dancing and beach volleyball. William kicked off the couple’s afternoon on the
water quite literally. Swapping his crisp jacket and tie for a jumpsuit and helmet, he climbing into the co-pilot’s seat aboard a grey Sikorsky CH-124 and plopped it down repeatedly on the surface of Dalvay Lake, near the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the edge of Prince Edward Island. He spent nearly an hour perfecting the Canadianmade “waterbirding” move — sometimes turning circles on the water like a giant mechanical duck, windshield wipers clearing the spray from the windscreen, or performing a touch-and-go exercise that at times pushed the water levels nearly to the windows. Mummy in waiting? Four simple words reportedly uttered by Kate have sparked a firestorm of speculation by international media and gossip rags alike that the royal couple are planning on starting a family — or that they may have begun already. A seemingly innocuous response to a bit of chitchat with a fan has generated scores of headlines proclaiming the duchess a “mummy in waiting.” David Cheater, a British expat now living in Quebec, met Kate during a walkabout and her comments to him, as reported by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, formed the basis for a story about Kate’s desire to have children. “When Mr. Cheater wished the duchess well in her efforts to start a family, she thanked him saying: ‘Yes, I hope to,’” the Telegraph reported. Fake tweets about Obama assassination leaves news organization red-faced FoxNews.com issues apology GETTY IMAGES FILE
Several false but shocking tweets about the assassination of U.S. President Barack Obama resulted in an embarrassing Fourth of July yesterday for the news organization frequently accused of inciting anti-Obama sentiment. Hackers broke into a Fox News Twitter account in the early morning hours of U.S. Independence Day to falsely tweet that the president had been shot and killed while campaigning in Iowa. “@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July, indeed. President Barack Obama is dead,” read the first tweet. The hackers went on to report in another dispatch that Obama had been “shot twice in the lower pelvic

The tweets remained visible on the Fox News politics Twitter account, with almost 35,000 followers, for more than six hours after the first one appeared. A group calling itself The Script Kiddies took responsibility for the tweets, replacing the account’s profile picture at one point with its own logo and a description that read “H4CK3D BY TH3 5CR1PT K1DD3S.” A red-faced Fox News released a statement about the hoax. “The hacking is being investigated, and FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.” No need to apologize, according to several people who commented on the Fox News website and expressed regret that the tweets were false. “That’s okay Fox, no ‘distress’ here. French proposals not solution, S&P warns
Standard & Poor’s, a leading credit ratings agency, warned yesterday that Greece would be considered to be in default if banks rolled over their holdings in the country’s debt as proposed by an association of French banks because both proposed options offer “less value than the promise of the original securities.” S&P’s position could wreak havoc on Europe’s attempts to deal with the Greek debt crisis, especially if rivals Moody’s and Fitch come to the same conclusion.
June car sales spike
Top sellers Ford Canada once again claimed the top spot with June sales that increased six per cent. That was its best June since 1989. General Motors Canada, Canada’s second-best selling automaker last month, said sales grew 12 per cent from a year ago, led by its Chevrolet Cruze.

Some of Canada’s top automakers are reporting a strong rebound in sales last month after a weak performance in May. Canada’s top three automakers — Ford, General Motors and Chrysler of Canada — saw their sales improve dramatically on an annual basis. Ford and
GM also saw a bounce from weak sales activity reported in May, when the industry recorded a 3.8 per cent drop in sales. Automakers have been reporting larger increases in car sales for most of this year due to soaring fuel costs. THE CANADIAN PRESS

SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME We all make mistakes. The chances of making those mistakes increase exponentially when alcohol is involved. In JESSICA NAPIER fact, the decisions you make METRO during a night out on the town are almost exclusively regrettable. Here are just a few of the things that you would never, ever do in real life (read: sober) but that seem like a really good idea at 2 a.m. • Ask the DJ to play an obnoxious pop track from the mid-2000s — think Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl — and scream “THIS IS MY JAM” at anyone within earshot. • Wear sunglasses indoors. Convince yourself that sunglasses are a fun prop and that wearing them at night will make people think you are a hilariously zany individual. If Corey Hart can do it, so can you. • Get into a heated discussion about religion/politics/anything of a sensitive nature. Assume you are correct no matter how outlandish your point “Walk home is. There is no reasoning barefoot through with someone under the influence of drunk logic. the city streets. • Order a pitcher of beer Hepatitis be … for yourself. When the server asks: “What type of damned; your beer?” Respond with: “Surfeet really hurt prise me.” from wearing • Get all confessiony and tell your best friend about cheap heels all that time you hooked up night long and with her exfive kilometres boyfriend/brother/dad. isn’t really that • Purchase a large pulled pork poutine with extra far of a walk gravy or some other calorieanyway.” laden late-night snack that you will inevitably spill all over yourself. Not that it matters. One of your friends accidently poured a double vodka cranberry down your back an hour ago. • Send (what you think are) nonchalant text messages to that guy you went on a few dates with back in May. You didn’t really like him and it didn’t go anywhere, but for some reason you feel the need to see what he’s up to right now. • Walk home barefoot through the city streets. Hepatitis be damned; your feet really hurt from wearing cheap heels all night long and five kilometres isn’t really that far of a walk anyway. • Facebook creep your ex. Wind up in a shameful spiral of despair before falling asleep on your keyboard. Wake up at 5:30 a.m. to a photo album titled I Luv U Babe featuring him and his new girlfriend, who you suspect is at least five years younger than you. • Decide that the remedy for nausea is not water but tequila. So be sure to proceed with caution on your next night of summertime revelry. Engage in any one of these activities and you will guarantee yourself a miserable morning after.

Cartoon by Michael de Adder Worth mentioning TORONTO. It’s part cathe-
dral, part parking meter and part Cadillac. And it’s the latest invention out of Great Britain. It’s called the AutoWed Wedding Machine — a kind of vending machine for wedding ceremonies. It’s the brainchild of Sam Lanyon, a 30-yearold electronics engineer. It’s a simple process: You put in $1 and the machine begins to play a wedding march. Then it asks you what kind of ceremony you want: Gay, straight, lesbian or best friend forever. Once you have selected the type of wedding, AutoWed takes over. If you agree to marry, you press the No. 1 on a computer keyboard. If you don’t agree, you press 2 for “escape.” After you exchange vows, it dispenses two plastic rings. Once the rings have been exchanged, a voice congratulates you and instructs you to kiss. With the ceremony over, the vending machine dispenses a receipt with your names on it and asks you to hold on to it. Lanyon admits the ceremony is not legally binding, but designed only as a novelty.

Not the best idea to invite him to lunch Joey Chestnut scarfed down 62 hotdogs to win his fifth consecutive Fourth of July hotdog-eating contest at Coney Island — the equivalent of about 20,000 calories in 10 minutes. It wasn’t a personal best for the 27year-old nicknamed Jaws, but it was enough to out-eat second-place finisher Patrick Bertoletti by nine wieners. Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., won $10,000 and the coveted
mustard-yellow belt. “I feel great!” he said, sweat pouring down his face after the contest, adding he was going to drink a lot of water and avoid hotdogs for a few days. This year, for the first time, the annual contest in front of Nathan’s Famous fast food stand was broken into two divisions, one for men and one for women. Sonya Thomas, known as the “Black Widow” of competitive eating, won with 40 downed dogs, earning her $10,000 and her own pink champion’s belt. Both Thomas and Chestnut broke world records in 2009; he with 68 and she with 41. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Horrible Bosses with a twist
Charlie Day plays a meek dental hygienist who doesn’t want to be hit on by his boss, played by Jennifer Aniston Believable? You be the judge
Bearded humour Is facial hair funny?
HEIDI PATALANO
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN NEW YORK
Charlie Day, best known for his illiterate, glue-sniffing character on FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has been put in the unlikely position of explaining why being pursued for a sexual liaison by a character resembling Jennifer Aniston is an unpleasant prospect. It’s not an easy job.
“Most men don’t cheat on their wives. Not all, but close,” he offers rather sheepishly. His character in the comedy Horrible Bosses is a dental hygienist for Aniston’s man-eating dentist. Devoted to his fiancé, Day’s character Dale is terrified by his boss’ blackmailing seduction. As the logic of the film goes, he and his buddies, played by Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman, decide to kill Dale’s boss. Dark as it may seem, Bosses isn’t afraid to cover
the controversial topics. “I don’t think anything is too taboo to make funny,” says Day. “Murder is a terrible thing. It ruins people’s lives. But set against this backdrop, in this idiotic light with these guys that have no business trying to commit a murder go about it, then it becomes a comedy. The things aren’t inherently funny themselves. It’s how you tell the joke.” That’s where the overlap lies between Horrible Boss-
es and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He’s just wrapped production on the seventh season of the sitcom on which no topic — from abortion to crack smoking — is too crooked or bizarre. “Managing to fly under the radar enough so that we don’t lose our street cred but be a big enough hit that we’re actually a very successful show has been a really nice balance,” says Day. The next season premieres in September.
“Having a beard just makes me look older,” says Charlie Day. “Sometimes when I shave it off I feel like I still look like I’m 15. Mac (on Sunny) kind of grows his beard a little bit longer this season. He’s definitely funnier, but I’ve definitely seen some unfunny people with beards. I don’t know that it makes people unfunny. I just know that there are plenty of people who grow beards who still remain completely humourless.”
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe says he has given up drinking alcohol after realizing he was partying too hard. The 21-year-old says he began to drink too much while filming Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in 2009. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Herzog digs deep in Cave Newest doc is director’s first and will possibly be his only film in 3D SUBMITTED
PHIL BROWN
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
Over 50 films into his career, Werner Herzog is undeniably one of the most masterful filmmakers alive and a rare beast who nimbly jumps from documentaries to fiction. Having recently coaxed a particularly deranged performance out of Nicolas Cage (even by his standards), Herzog returned to non-fiction with Cave Of Forgotten Dreams, a hypnotic documentary about the remarkable ancient paintings in Southern France’s Chauvet Cave. Ever experimental, the film was Herzog’s first in 3D. “I’m still a skeptic of 3D, but the moment that I saw the cave and how the paintings used the drama

of the walls, there was no choice,” the director told Metro, adding, “but if I look back, none of my other films would be right in 3D.” Cave paintings have been a lifelong obsession for Herzog, who leapt at the chance to make the film. Unfortunately, the Chauvet Cave is a very fragile environment and
few people are allowed to enter, requiring some careful negotiation by the director. “It was complicated and culminated in a meeting between the French Minister of Culture and me,” explained Herzog. “He asked, ‘Why shouldn’t it be a French filmmaker to make this film?’ So, I proposed to
work as an employee at a French Ministry of Culture for a fee of one Euro. Then they could show the film in 30,000 French film classes for free. That was kind of helpful,” he deadpanned. Like all of Herzog’s work, the film required an incredibly difficult and at times painful production (this is the man who once had his crew pull a steamship over a mountain), but the director hopes that the behind the scenes stories will not overshadow the actual movie. “The journey doesn’t count,” he claimed. “Who cares if we like each other or how deep we had to plunge down into a cave. That’s not interesting. It’s only what you see on the screen.”

Conan O’Brien can’t stop New documentary captures talk show host’s ups and downs during the creation of his live touring show SUBMITTED
RICHARD CROUSE

Rodman Flender says the hardest part of making Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, a movie about his pal Conan O’Brien, was detaching himself from their friendship. “All of us experience terrible disappointments in our lives and careers,” he says. “We all get jobs and lose jobs but very few of us do it on the front page of the New York Times. So as his friend I wanted to be there for him. However, as a filmmaker I wanted to detach myself. That was difficult for me.” The pair began to document the creation of O’Brien’s live touring show, a two-hour, allsinging, all-dancing way for the talk show host to

capture Conan at this moment in time, at such a crossroads in his career. To see how the tour evolved and the nuts and bolts of the tour in a kind of Judy Garland Mickey Rooney, ‘Hey let’s put on a show’ kind of way. “I never wanted it to be a promotional piece for Conan. I just wanted to capture, in the true, oldschool direct cinema style, whatever happened.” In that spirit the movie reveals an unvarnished portrait of the star. “People have asked me, ‘Is this the real Conan O’Brien?’ Yes. But so is the guy you see on TV every night. What you see in the movie is the real Conan O’Brien without a script. “And like a real person he has real feelings and he has moods and he is kind
and generous and he gets tired and cranky at the end of a long day and that is what I think it is to be a human being. It’s interesting to me that so many people have thought, ‘Oh wow, it’s such a negative portrait of him,’ but he doesn’t do drugs, he doesn’t abuse anybody.” O’Brien’s down-to-earth side is evident in the off-
stage footage, particularly in his interactions with fans. “He really wants to be kind to everybody and really show his appreciation to his fans and everyone who has done so much and stuck by him,” says Flender. “But there is a toll that takes. He is a human being after all. He’s not a machine.”

Hobo with a Shotgun Genre: Thriller Director: Jason Eisener Stars: Rutger Hauer, Brian Downey, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth 888 1⁄2
To describe Hobo with a Shotgun as being over the top would be like calling a
beaver furry. Directed by Halifax’s Jason Eisener, it’s like no other Canadian movie you’ve seen, and that’s OK. The Hobo (Rutger Hauer) rides the rails into Scum Town, like Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name, looking to buy a lawnmower.
Maybe he can start his own gardening business: “You grow it, we cut it.” But Hobo can’t close his eyes to the carnage around him. A sadistic capitalist named Drake (Brian Downey), and his stooge sons Slick (Gregory Smith) and Ivan (Nick Bateman) are terrorizing Scum Town by beheading people in the street. Only Hobo and his new shotgun stand in their way. The lawns will have to wait. Extras include commentary with Eisener and Hauer, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, video blogs and featurettes. This drama about corporate downsizing has an A-list cast that includes four Oscar winners: Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner. The film, written and directed by John Wells, speaks to an issue that is as current as a newspaper's front page, and plays as almost a companion piece to Up in the Air, Jason Reitman's like-minded film about workers squeezed by a bad economy. In this case though, the workers are suits who considered themselves bulletproof. It's meat-and-potatoes drama, but The Company Men depicts harsh reality truthfully. PETER HOWELL

Anyway, this weekend, he was tasered by cops, reports TMZ. The site says he was playing music loudly
in his car and got mad when the police approached. We’re guessing the line “Don’t you know who I am?” drew blanks. METRO

Neo-soul artist Jill Scott brought a sassy new look, new music and a surprise performance with soulsinger Anthony Hamilton on the second day of the Essence Music Festival. Scott performed some of her timeless hits Saturday evening such as Long Walk, and The Way and drew heavily on tunes from her new release, The Light of the Sun. She delighted fans
when Hamilton joined her on stage to perform their current hit, So In Love, which has helped push the new album to No. 1 — her first release to do so. Scott was among the headliners for Saturday’s festival, which also featured performances by El Debarge, Chaka Khan and the night’s closer, rapper Kanye West. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
A career-first for Taylor Swift Taylor Swift recently postponed a show for the first time in her career. Swift had to postpone Saturday night’s sold-out show at the Yum Center in Louisville under doctor’s orders because of an illness. She tweeted the bad news to fans: “This is my first time having to do this. I’m so, so sorry.” Within 20 minutes, hundreds of followers had responded with get-well wishes, which were already
among the most popular international trends on Twitter for the day. Swift postponed the show until Oct. 11. She’s due for a short break before returning to the road in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday in support of her multi-platinum Speak Now album. THE

New Zealand researchers find that self-expression and life options are more important than having money CELIA MILNE

Money doesn’t buy happiness. But what does? According to a large worldwide study, having choices in life and being able to express yourself are the most important ingredients in being happy. Researchers in New Zealand collected data from all around the world on what factors contribute to well-being. Altogether, the studies included 420,599 people from 63 countries over several decades, so the science behind their results is very strong. “The main finding is that money does not buy happiness and well-being,” says Dr. Ronald Fischer, lead author, in an email to Metro. “Choice and autonomy are more directly related to happiness than having lots of money. Autonomy provides you with the options to pursue meaning in your life, to find activities that stimulate and excite you and keep you active,” explains Fischer, who is a
senior lecturer in psychology and Fellow of the Centre for Applied Cross-Cultural Research at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He and colleagues were surprised by the finding that choice and self-expression are more important than money, especially once you have your basic needs met. “We did not predict we would find these clear patterns when we started and none of our friends or colleagues would have bet on this.” Job searchers take note. “People may not need to go for the highest paying job, but rather focus on something that fulfills them personally and gives them greater happiness and satisfaction in their life,” he says. He warns that too much of anything is bad. “Having too many choices or too much autonomy can lead to doubt about what to do, and regret that you aren’t making the right choices.” The study was published by the American Psychological Association.
A life of choice is a life of happiness, a new study shows.

Worry-Free Travel Is Just A Few Clicks Away Travelling more than once a year? If you take more than one trip a year, chances are it’s cheaper to buy a full-year travel policy than it is to buy one-off coverage each time you leave your province for business or pleasure. For as little as $275/year a family of four can be covered for complete medical and non-medical travel insurance for one full year.
Travel Medical Insurance You might have travel medical insurance coverage from your employer, but it’s important to make sure you are fully covered. Nothing would be worse than needing medical coverage while out-of-town and finding out after the fact that your work policy only covers half of the expenses incurred...you could be out-of-pocket several thousand dollars, depending on the nature of your claim. Alternatively, you may think that all of your in-country travel is covered by your provincial plan; but, you might be surprised to learn what this plan pays for when travelling in other provinces. It pays to do your homework and a small yearly fee could be the best money you’ve ever spent.

Sausages grab the lunch spotlight The simple menu at Wvrst focuses on sausages, fries, beer and wine The meat is served in two different ways STEPHANIE DICKISON
Non-Medical Travel Insurance Even if you are fully covered for medical, it’s still a good idea to purchase a non-medical plan that can cover you for trip cancellation, trip interruption and baggage loss. When booking any trip, your travel agent will always offer this type of coverage and it’s generally a good idea to make sure that you are covered for these items; however, it’s usually cheaper to purchase a yearly plan rather than buy one-off policies each time you travel.
Travel with Confidence Once you’ve bought your yearly policy you can rest assured that you, and your family members, are covered for all of your trips – even a 24 hour shopping trip to Buffalo. You’ll also get the added advantage of knowing that there will be someone available 24/7 to help you in the case of an emergency. Wvrst is all about sausages, which are served up on a bun or sliced.

Wvrst, pronounced “verst”, has a simple menu: sausages, fries, beer and wine. Booze, a choice of artesian and game links (Kangaroo! Guinea fowl!) and a cool interior (coral red subway-tiled wall and communal tables) add a unique
draw and separate it far from street vendor carts. Choose your style: On a fresh bun with 2 toppings or sliced with tomato curry sauce and a slice of “country bread.” Choose your sausage: Venison ($9) on the bun with caramelized onions and sweet peppers and an Italian Pork ($6) with the sauce, please. Venison with red pepper/dijon delights (it’s not as gamey as you think), but the pork loses its juices when sliced (you miss out on that moist
burst when you take a bite). Golden, crisp and salty Duck Fat Fries ($4.50) however, are a must. It’s crazy loud, but fun in here. Just what a sausage hall should be. Wvrst 609 King St. W. 416-703-7775 wvrst.com Reservations: No Licensed: Yes Lunch with co-workers: Yes Rating: 4 out of 5

SEALING THE DEAL WHEN YOU SIGN
WORKPLACE LAW
ISTOCK
DANIEL LUBLIN DAN@TORONTOEMPLOYMENTLAWYER.COM TWITTER: @DANLUBLIN
What happens if a group of just-dismissed, hourly wage employees, who barely speak English, sign a broad-ranging release preventing them from taking further legal action? Does it matter that their former employer paid them next to nothing to sign that release or that the employees feared they would get nothing at all if they refused to sign it? According to a recent human rights decision that amazes even me, the answer is that it does not matter at all!
Perceived ‘duress’ is unlikely to invalidate a signed document.
Just-fired from their jobs as general labourers at Global Egg Corporation, a group of 10 Spanish-speaking former employees found themselves in a pickle. Presented with a severance agreement that they claimed not to understand, they were given
one week to sign the documents, in exchange for an extra one or two weeks’ pay, or they could refuse, in which case they thought they would not receive anything at all. The group took the documents to the Centre for
Spanish Speaking People and spoke with two lawyers from the Centre and an interpreter who explained the requirements of severance and gave them advice about the consequences of refusing to sign the agreement. After the meeting everyone signed the documents, still fearful that they would not receive any money if they refused to sign. According to the one of the members of the group who testified at the recent hearing, she did not want to sign, but felt that she had no choice since she “needed the money.” However, later on, believing the deal they received was discriminatory and unfair, the group complained to the Human Rights Tribunal, arguing that it should be set aside. In a surprising human rights decision, the tribunal dismissed the claims at a preliminary hearing because of the agreements that were signed. Although the group believed that they would re-
ceive nothing unless they signed their names, it was not because of anything their former employer said. The group received advice from lawyers and, however ill-advised, decided to take the deal. Although this “deal” was unfortunate and paid them less than they would have otherwise received, even a human rights tribunal was not prepared to intervene. This result can be avoided by observing two simple rules: Visit - Termination packages are clubmetro.com negotiable. Seek specialized and tell us legal advice before signing which page your name. you found - Ask for more time or the him on! opportunity to meet with a lawyer if the terms of an offer or release are unclear.

What’s the “big deal” today? Check your email, Facebook or Twitter and within seconds you’ll know it’s 50 per cent off rims for your ride or a two-for-one pass to Ashton Kutcher’s new flick. Sites like Groupon get frugal types like me all revved up. They negotiate huge discounts with popular local businesses and pass along savings of 50 to 90 per cent to subscribers. If you’re in the market for a particular product and its price gets slashed, online coupons can save you hundreds of dollars.
Saving money is en vogue and often the topic of water cooler conversation. But, if you’re leading your offices’ popularity contest for nabbing the best daily online deal, watch out! You’ll quickly fall from financial grace once your credit card is maxed and you’ve got nothing more to share with your colleagues. It’s important to ensure you’re not spending money unnecessarily simply for the sake of a “sweet deal.” If a fancy trip out to the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel wasn’t part of your travel plans this month, don’t buy one. Sure, it’s important to include fun and entertainment in your budget, but not at the expense of building your financial security. A great deal you can’t afford is never a good deal.

Liberating though it can be, working at home isn’t all hanging out in sweats and catching up on daytime TV. Last week I presented seven drawbacks of the home-based job and you readers reminded me of five more.
1. Lack of spousal support A spouse who doesn’t respect and support what you’re doing can turn working at home into a nightmare. In a previous incarnation I had one of those. For instance, reading the papers and magazines, and now browsing the Internet is a big part of my job. But he refused to see it that way, always character-

The reality is that down time is limited because you are on your own with no colleagues or assistants to take up the slack. Set boundaries, although it can be tough when family is involved.

3. Kids home sick!
5. Credit scarcity
You’re home so you can just keep an eye on those sneezing, coughing, feverish kids. Then there are school holidays and snow days, which fall in the lap of the work-at-home parent.
Banks still look askance at the self-employed. I believe they have a secret, negative category for us. Assets, sparkling credit score and low debt to income ratio be damned, the work-at-home crowd have a tough time getting things like a business related line of credit without pledging their first born. I’ve outlined 12 pitfalls of working at home this week and last. Even so, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
4. Non-custodial drop off I’ve never personally experienced this but several readers complained that their ex just drops the kids and says, “You’re at home anyway and I’ve got this big business trip so I

The Wild have certainly addressed some of their offensive shortcomings with the additions of Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi. They combined for 48 goals a year ago and have shown in the past they are capable of a much higher output.
Not only did Caps GM George McPhee land a proven veteran in Tomas Vokoun — at an extremely cap-friendly price tag of $1.5 million US — he also obtained a potential lottery pick from Colorado for unpredictable goalie Semyon Varlamov.
The addition of Brad Richards doesn’t solve all of New York’s problems, but it drastically improves the outlook for next year. He will slot in as the No. 1 centre and should make life a little easier for Marian Gaborik.
Despite immense pressure to start winning immediately, the Leafs have avoided getting in cap trouble by overspending. The team’s only free agent signing, Tim Connolly, will strengthen a weak group at centre.
They overpaid for defenceman Christian Ehrhoff and forward Ville Leino, but when was the last time you could say that about the Sabres? Buffalo established itself as an off-season winner simply by making a splash in the free agent pool.

“For us, it’s about proving that we belong here, that we deserve to be No. 6 in the world, it’s not a fluke and we have to go out and prove to ourselves and to Canada that we’re a lot better than we were that day.” CANADIAN GOALKEEPER ERIN MCLEOD, ON HER TEAM’S DESIRE FOR REDEMPTION AFTER A 4-0 LOSS TO FRANCE AT THE WOMEN’S WORLD CUP. To be fair, the Panthers were pretty much in a nowin situation. GM Dale Tallon acknowledged as much at the draft when he said the need to spend up to the $48.3-million US salary floor would actually make his team worse.
GM Paul Holmgren has made a habit of doing things his own way. The culture change that comes with the departure of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter probably won’t be enough to overcome the drop in talent that accompanies it.
An uncertain ownership issue has made the job of building a team particularly tough on GM Joe Nieuwendyk, who simply couldn’t come up with the kind of offer needed to keep Brad Richards in the fold.
A team that missed the playoffs a year ago lost veteran defenceman Robyn Regehr in exchange for nothing more than salary cap flexibility. While that certainly has value in today’s NHL, GM Jay Feaster has yet to put it to use.
After letting both of his goaltenders walk away, GM Greg Sherman is taking a bit of a gamble. He is banking on the duo of Semyon Varlamov and J.S. Giguere making his team much better. THE CANADIAN PRESS

He said that the cure was best in person which is why we went to see the Shaman who did cure us. Thanks Shaman. Christian James & 100% Yariela Martinez GUARANTEED
