Bursting Into Flames I remember reading about a study a while back that suggested that having too much choice — like an aisle full of cereals to choose from — actually makes us less happy. That paradox — that by having more, we feel worse — comes across in Martin Dockery’s spectacular monologue, which suggests that even Heaven may not be so heavenly. That’s what we discover in this story, as our unnamed hero tells us the story of his afterlife. Martin Dockery absolutely burns down the house with Bursting Into Flames.

Katy Perry’s colourful performance Fans — a good mix of men and women under 20 — seemed ecstatic to see Katy Perry, whose voice and band sounded superb. The eye-catching, colourful set proved a fitting backdrop to Perry’s candy-coated singalong songs.

News in brief
Paying fare on city transit to get easier AUTOMATED. Winnipeg Transit is finally making it easier to pay for your fare, rather than scrounging for change in your couch. Automated bus fare boxes will arrive in 2013, said Winnipeg Transit di-
rector Dave Wardrop. The new machines will allow you to load a smart card with money online or at a kiosk. Or for those who still wish to pay cash, transit will make sure you’ve put in the right amount. The plan has been in the works for about five years. ELISHA DACEY
BRT plan changes again ROUTE. Council is now
considering running the
second phase of the much-anticipated Bus Rapid Transit line through several south Winnipeg neighbourhoods instead of alongside Pembina Highway. The new line would instead run around the Parker, Maybank and Beaumont neighbourhoods in Fort Garry. Mayor Sam Katz said he has not seen a formal plan for the new line, but is aware of the idea. Raven Causes Mischief Every culture has a trickster — whether it’s coyote or rabbit or Charlie Chaplin. For the Haida of northwestern B.C., it’s Raven. And here, Roberta Kennedy (whose Haida name is Kung Jaadaa) brings stories of how Raven created the world, brought ‘the two-leggeds’ the sun and moon, and brought about the creation of Moon Woman. Kung Jaadaa delivers the stories with a calm seriousness that gives them gravity, but also keeps her audience at a bit of a distance. And while she smartly wraps her show up at 35
minutes, it’s a shame Kung Jaadaa saves the show’s most powerful moment — explaining her personal connection with Raven — until the end. As it is, her Raven stories can make for quiet, reflective Fringe fare — but may also test the attention span of fidgety Fringers. JOFF SCHMIDT/CBC REVIEW CREW
Oh, That Wily Snake! This show is — like a flying mattress — a weird ride. Unfortunately, like a flying mattress, it ultimately crashes. I bring up the flying mattress because it’s a key element in this expressionist retelling of the Garden of Eden story. And watching characters argue in a dream isn’t particularly more interesting than watching them argue in a more grounded setting. It’s a bold experiment, particularly for a writer like Dockery, who has had great success with solo shows. But Wily Snake is not the most tempting fruit on the Fringe tree. JOFF SCHMIDT/CBC REVIEW

Gang crackdown won’t compromise core operations, according to police The core public-safety mission of the Winnipeg Police Service won’t be hampered as officers are moved around in an effort to clamp down on the bikergang war, police pledged yesterday. “The everyday operation of the service is not being compromised in any way, shape or form,” said spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen. Officers across several key units of the force are
being shuffled to try and resolve the conflict between the Rock Machine and the Hells Angels-affiliated Redlined Support Crew. Over a month, police have identified 13 outbursts of violence they believe stem from the clash. Asked if investigations unrelated to the biker conflict would be hampered, Michalyshen said supervisors are tasked with deciding how best to use resources. “Some things may have
to be put on the back burner, some things may not,” he conceded. Arrests have been made in two of the 13 incidents. Two men police identified as gang associates have been charged with arson-related crimes and held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. Officers arrested the suspects early Wednesday, shortly after firebombs crashed through the front door of an Osborne Village tattoo shop. “There were of-
ficers in the area at the time of the incident,” Michalyshen said. He declined to discuss police tactics further. “That would certainly defeat the purpose,” he said. Taylor Morrison, 23, and Shaine Stodgell, 33, are in custody. Police said Stodgell also faces an arson charge in connection to another incident at an auto dealership on St. Mary’s Road last Sunday. We’re not mosquito capital CONTRIBUTED
We’re not the murder capital, either But don’t worry — we’re still the Slurpee capital of the world Winnipeg is getting a run for its money this year as the mosquito capital of Canada. The latest mosquito trap count in Edmonton has hit 30 per night. In Winnipeg, the count is nine and holding. High numbers of bloodsuckers have been pestering Edmontonians for weeks, and the population is expected to climb after recent heavy rain. Officials in Edmonton are considering spot spraying at some summer festival sites to control mosquitoes. Taz Stuart, entomologist with the City of Winnipeg, said Thursday that since trap counts are low,
there is no fogging being contemplated here, even though the second week in July is usually when fogging begins. He said Winnipeg is winning the mosquito war thanks to the stepped-up larviciding program and the co-operative weather, although he warned that a few days of rain could change everything. Extremely hot temperatures and a chance of thunderstorms are forecast for this weekend. As an aside, Edmonton is also the murder capital of Canada, with 28 homicides so far this year, the highest per capita in the country. ELISHA DACEY/WITH FILES FROM

Determined Filipino family ignores skeptics to succeed in Canada When Erick Alfonso meets immigrants who feel overwhelmed, he gives them hope by telling his own family’s story. In fact, the Manila native and his wife achieved personal success in a remarkably short time, by ignoring skeptics who scoffed at their Canadian dreams.
Erick also gives pep talks on job searches, based on his experience and that of his wife, Maria Rosario, who within a year moved from a temporary accounting job to accounting manager with a local ďŹ rm.
“We didn’t do anything special, but we were determined. By believing in ourselves and supporting each other, we got through each difďŹ culty,â€? says Erick. “It is possible – If you show what you can do, you can build the right connections and open the door to a new life in “They told us that you need Canadian experience Canada.â€? to find a job,â€? recalls the former IT project THIS ADVERTORIAL IS PREPARED BY SCOTIABANK. manager at a Philippine bank. “But we decided to try because we knew it was a good country to raise our kids.â€? Now working as a Manager of Customer Service at Scotiabank in Calgary, Alberta, Erick remembers how friends discouraged them from migrating to Canada with their ďŹ ve young children.
Now established as a Scotiabank Manager, Erick Alfonso welcomes other new Canadians to his branch.
Upon arrival in Canada in 2006, the Alfonsos discovered that many Filipino compatriots were juggling low paying jobs to survive. While Erick also took a temporary factory job to pay the bills, he refused to give up hope. “A friend told me to open my ďŹ rst bank account at Scotiabank, and the teller was so helpful that I decided to submit my resumĂŠ,â€? recounts Erick. To his amazement, the branch manager hired him within a month as a casual teller, and two months later, gave him a full-time customer support role. “I was lucky that Scotiabank gave me the chance to prove myself,â€? notes Erick, who has risen through the ranks and now serves many Asian customers at Calgary’s Castleridge Centre Branch. “I can relate to them because I remember arriving with no bank account and no permanent address. The Scotiabanker explained everything to me, and I try to do the same for others today.â€? For example, Erick recommends the Scotiabank StartRight Program1 for Newcomers, which includes a free day-to-day bank account for one year 2, a wide range of VISA* card options3 and a number of other customized services and benefits. He also provides plenty of ďŹ rst-hand ďŹ nancial advice. ÂŽ
“Since many newcomers arrive with personal savings, I help them invest their savings wisely, including short-term investments such as a TaxFree Savings Account (TFSA), which lets them earn tax-free income that they can access later for other needs, says Erick. He also explains the importance of building a Canadian credit history. “Some newcomers are afraid to use a credit card, but I tell them how it can help them achieve other goals if they use it responsibly.

Metro graphic designer Kyle Dratowany: I’m not crazy about the use of the maple leaf, necessarily — just with Winnipeg being so close to Toronto and them using the maple leaf. We don’t have to yell Canada on everything just because we’re Canadian. No one liked this logo. People thought it wasn’t enough “Go Jets go” and too much “Team Canada.”
Kyle: I like the general shape and how they’re playing off some of the old elements with the jet and the circle. I’m not crazy about the Esplanade Riel … but it does incorporate the name into the logo.
Kyle: I actually like this one quite a bit because it has that retro look to it, using the same jet and the red circle. Everything is symmetrical.… I kind of like how they incorporated the W shape.
Chris Butt, 25, Garden City: It kinda resembles the old style. Let’s just keep it the original. Let’s go back to 1996. Let’s just do that.
Sean Leggett, 25, West Kildonan I like the jetstream W. It reminds me of a jet, the way that it’s coming down like that. I think it’s got a couple real cool designs in it and it represents Winnipeg.
“It is easy to use and doesn’t seem to give off harsh fumes. Simply assemble, start and put under your patio table or chair and it should keep the mosquitoes away.... (I’m told) that this product will even keep the

Kyle: I really like the more illustrated style of this. The sharp lines of the jet, it looks more modern and fits in with the current NHL logo and the type is handled really well. The colours I’m not crazy about. Darron Field, 46, St. Boniface. It’s aggressive. It’s a different colour scheme.… The funny thing is that none of these planes fly here. They should have a Herc or something. That kind of looks like an F-15.

Officials with the University of Manitoba say they don’t understand the current brouhaha over parking near the new Winnipeg Blue Bombers stadium — they’re planning to open up thousands of spots to Bomber fans. “There’s ample parking,” said U of M spokesman John Danakas. “There’s construction going on on the campus, so the number of parking stalls does vary, but we have upwards of 6,000 stalls available.” This is in addition to the already 7,100 stalls that

“We’re in discussions with the football club, who are the experts on what kind of parking would be necessary on football games,” said Danakas, adding they’re talking about which stalls they will make available.
But that doesn’t mean students and staff would be out of a parking spot. “We certainly would want a certain amount of parking available for people who are visiting the university,” said Danakas. The plan comes after the city asked surrounding businesses to open up their parking lots to football fans. A City of Winnipeg community committee accepted a traffic-control plan from developers that recommends reserving parking stalls for carpoolers, building bicycle stalls and creating extra bus stops and routes for game days.

Don’t call them rodeo clowns or say they’re crazy. Scott Byrne and cousin Jesse Byrne are bullfighters at the Calgary Stampede, and not the Spanish kind that wear sequins and swing a cape at a bull. When a bull rider gets thrown from a snorting, leaping bull that weighs over a ton, their work begins. They distract the animal and draw the beast’s attention away from the cowboy so the vulnerable human has time to get away from those swinging horns. “I get the question quite often, ‘Are you crazy?’” says Scott. “We’re not crazy. We’re just guys that chose a profession that’s a little on the edge. “Crazy to me is someone jumping in a race car and going 200 miles per hour around a race track 500 times.” They’re routinely and mistakenly called “rodeo clowns.” There is a rodeo
clown on the arena infield who entertains the crowd during down time. Bullfighters in the past have worn makeup and baggy pants, which has contributed to their misidentification. “Now we wear jerseys and no makeup. We’re trying to define it now,” Scott explains. “A lot of people will ask what you do and you say you’re a bullfighter and they just don’t get it. Thankfully, bulls don’t seem to have a long attention span. Quick movements combined with a holler, clap or whistle can be enough to cause the animal to lose interest in the cowboy. If the cowboy lands awkwardly and can’t quickly get away and the bull decides to exact revenge, then the bullfighter tries to get between the pursuer and the pursued. “Essentially, we’re just getting their attention so whatever works, but there has to be a system to it with the three of us working in the arena together,” Jesse explains. “It’s all basically angles and timing.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Public-sector workers in Ontario got 274 pink slips Thursday, the first in what their union is calling the “biggest wave of layoffs since the Mike Harris era.” The Ontario Public Service Employees Union expects 1,900 jobs cuts between now and March. The cuts mean the province will stop verify-

Union president Warren (Smokey) Thomas says the Harris era should have taught the province that public cuts hurt everyone. Premier Dalton McGuinty, he says, was elected to “turn the page on eight years of destructive cuts” — not make the same mistakes.

The sentence was far more lenient than the five years Crown prosecutors has asked for. The video of a parole officer’s visit shows yet again how the state botched chances to find Dugard as she was kept hidden for 18 years in the backyard of the couple’s home in Antioch, North Carolina. Throughout the years, parole officers had paid dozens of visits to the home to check on Phillip Garrido and give him drug tests, but none of the officials reported any irregularities. New hope for U.S. debt-ceiling deal? CHARLES DHARAPAK/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Senate leaders discuss fallback plan as crisis talks continue Same day Wall Street warns of catastrophe The top Democrat and Republican in the U.S. Senate are constructing a legislative detour for President Barack Obama, a path around the bitter partisan divide over raising the American debt limit and avoiding a U.S. default on its spiralling debt. Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic majority leader, and Sen. Mitch McConnell, the top Republican, are at work on a
legislative manoeuvre that would give Obama the power to raise the debt limit unilaterally. That would sidestep the seemingly intractable impasse in White House talks that have failed now in five sessions to find an agreement with Republicans in the House of Representatives who are demanding dramatic spending cuts but are refusing Obama’s insistence that tax loopholes al-

Obama’s Treasury Department has said Aug. 2 is the deadline for raising the debt limit to forestall an unprecedented American default on obligations at home and abroad. The notice read that the suspension was due to “multiple or severe violations of YouTube’s copyright policy.” The Google Inc.-owned YouTube declined to comment. It’s YouTube policy to remove accounts after three copyright violations, though they can be restored after being corrected. Reports have suggested that the infringing video was a recently uploaded clip of Gaga’s performance on Fuji TV. The account, “ladygagaofficial,” is one of two for Gaga. The removed channel is run by Gaga’s camp, while she also has an unaffected Vevo account. The Vevo account, which has more than 1.6 billion views, generally debuts her music videos. Co-owned by Universal Music Group and Sony Entertainment, Vevo is a music-video platform that also distributes videos on YouTube. The suspension is expected to be temporary.

Replace the gym with 20 litres of wine Scientists have discovered that resveratrol, a natural substance found in grapes and wine can reverse the negative effects of zero gravity in rats. Why should you care if you are not an astronaut? “We feel the resveratrol would be a good way to prevent the effects of physical inactivity for people who cannot undergo regular activity,” Dr. Stéphane Blanc said.
For the experiment, two groups of rats were suspended by their tails, to create the effect of zero gravity. One group was given daily 400-milligramper-kilogram supplements of resveratrol, the others were given nothing. The scientists initially tested the rats to see whether the resveratrol was able to prevent loss of muscle mass. It was. They then looked at its effect on muscle metabolism. It was positive. After further tests the team found the same dosage of resveratrol had positive effects on bone density and insulin resistance, a cause of diabetes. According to Blanc, the average person would have to drink 20 litres of wine for the equivalent of one reservatrol supplement given to the rats. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Best Potter movie yet Richard Crouse and Phil Brown agree the franchise finale is completely satisfying Creepy villains Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman steal the show
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
Richard Crouse: Mark, the decision to break the final Potter book into two movies was criticized as a money grab, just a cheap way to get a few extra dollars out of Potterheads before the franchise ends. But I have to tell you I think they made the right move. The movie is completely satisfying, with a well told story and great action scenes. What did you think? Mark Breslin: Yes, Richard, you’re right. The movie is completely satisfying. But I think it’s at the expense of the movie that preceded it, which I found inert and talky; the worst of the franchise. But this
one felt like a thrilling send-off to characters we’ve grown to love, with some great action set pieces thrown in for good measure. RC: This is as close to an all-out action movie as there is in the Potter series. Harry’s Horcrux hunt (say that three times fast!) takes up much of the movie leading up to some major revelations, an existential train station scene and a heartwarming conclusion, but along the way it’s an exciting ride. A small quibble though. What did you think of the 3D? It didn’t add much to the experience for me.
Check Theatre Directory or harrypotterandthedeathlyhallowsmovie.ca for Locations and Showtimes
MB: The best thing I can say about the 3D is that it was unobtrusive, letting us pay attention to the complex plotting. But I think the movie, unlike most in the series, doesn’t work as a standalone film. It would make little sense if you haven’t seen the last few installments. And fans of Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort won’t be disappointed — he’s as creepy a villain as you can imagine, with lots of screen time. By the way, I did try saying Harry’s Horcrux Hunt and was kicked out of the restaurant I was in.
since Boris Karloff and really brought something to a character that could have been one note. And you’re right, it isn’t a standalone, but it doesn’t have to be. Harry Potter has stood at the centre of popular culture for the last decade. The franchise is the thing, not just the one picture.
RC: I thought Alan Rickman stole the show. He has the creepiest vocal tics
RC: I have to tell you, I think the new one is the best of the bunch!

Actors Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis say their new film Friends with Benefits is more of a buddy comedy NED EHRBAR
MWN IN HOLLYWOOD
Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis want people talking about their new movie, Friends with Benefits. Just don’t call it a romantic comedy. “We always thought of it more as comedy than a romantic comedy,” says Kunis. “If anything, it was a two-hander — a buddy comedy with a little romance in it. Because you care about the characters and you watch the characters fall in love, but it’s not your stereotypical romantic comedy.” Timberlake is on the same page about the film, about two love-weary friends who embark on a sexual relationship with-
out all that messy romance stuff. “I don’t know that we’ve ever treated it like a romantic comedy or a slacker comedy. To me, funny is funny and not funny is not funny,” he says. “And so we just wanted to find the funny in all these situations, and that’s how we treated this.” Friends with Benefits marks a major milestone for both Timberlake and Kunis, as it’s the first time either has top-lined a film, though they’ve both received positive reviews for supporting turns in the Social Network and Bad Teacher in Timberlake’s case, and Black Swan and Forgetting Sarah Marshall in Kunis’. Still, taking the lead has to come with new pres-
sures, but Timberlake insists they’re quickly pushed aside. “We deal with those demons before we sign contracts. After you commit to the movie, you have to let all that stuff go,” he says, though he admits having Kunis along for the ride was a huge help. “That was a little bit of a comfort, knowing that you were going to be sharing the bill and the comedy and the whole movie with a counterpart,” he adds. “There’s never a moment in this movie where it’s just one of us out there by ourselves.” If the premise of Friends with Benefits sounds more than a little familiar, that’s because it’s not the first movie this year to tackle

Actress-singer Zooey Deschanel tries to satisfy kids, parents with her new music, new role on Fox
Are you excited about jumping into television?
I am. ... When I got the script, I thought, well, you know, it’s so rare, just even in the world of movies, to get a really great role, and to get a great role that I get to like, play for a long time, is so exciting, and I feel like, I just don’t get these kind of roles.
Though considered left of the mainstream, she has a chance to connect with the masses this fall on The New Girl, a Fox TV comedy. Deschanel talked with The Associated Press about all things Winnie the Pooh, her new series and her next role.
Has your sister Emily (who stars in Fox’s Bones) given you any advice about the world of television?
I was. I feel like if you asked me when I first heard of Winnie the Pooh, I don’t remember, because it’s so much a part of my childhood. ... I feel like it would be weird if I didn’t love Winnie the Pooh. Is writing for movies different
Zooey Deschanel wrote the closing song for the film, which opens in theatres on July 15 from what you do with She & Him because of all the visual elements?
As far as lyrically, you want to hit the point and hit the themes without be-
ing too specific, because if you’re too specific, for me, No. 1, it’s very unsubtle. You have to walk a line lyrically ... I want it to feel like the movie without it
being about the movie. You take the themes into account, but you’re not telling them what happens in the movie. They just saw the movie, they don’t

from —including the mysterious Arthur Foegel of Live Nation, the Canadian mastermind behind this tour and mega-tours by Madonna, the Police, David Bowie and other superstars — acknowledges that there isn’t another act on the planet capable of duplicating what U2 has done. Even the U2 organization itself can’t imagine anything bigger or more successful. Why? After 35 years, U2 remains a working
rock ’n’ roll band that still can release albums and have them go platinum around the world. There’s just not another act with U2’s musical firepower or financial backing. There isn’t another band capable of raising the start-up capital for staging a tour as big as 360. U2 and their people had to spend upwards of $150 million before a single ticket was sold. In the current musical environment, I can’t see
anyone ever outdoing this U2 tour. The Rolling Stones? They might come close, but they’d have to play more shows — and at their ages, that would be tough. I may just have to fly to Moncton to see that final show. Not because I want to see U2 again but because once the lights go down at the end of the set, I fear that we will never, ever see the likes of a rock ’n’ roll show on this scale ever again.

As I stood watching U2 play the 105th of 111 shows on their 360 Tour, all I kept thinking was “Now what?” No tour has sold more
tickets or grossed this much money. Every single show throughout the seven legs has sold out — this despite a million tickets having been thrown into disarray by Bono’s back injury last year. By the time it comes to an end in Moncton, on the 30th, the total box office take will be somewhere around $700 million. So I ask again: Now what? Everyone in the industry that I’ve heard

Were you a big Winnie the Pooh fan?
When Zooey Deschanel was a little girl, she listened to children’s music by Harry Nilsson, Carole King and others — and those songs remain on her playlist today. So when the actress and She & Him singer was tapped to write the closing song for the new Winnie the Pooh movie, she sought to set that same kind of standard for her tune. The 31-year-old is known for her quirky performances in films including (500) Days of Summer and Elf, as well as her musical career with M. Ward as part of the retro, folkypop duo of She & Him.

Miranda Kerr names her kid after dead ex Actress gets permission from Bloom to name the baby after her first love

Miranda Kerr named her and Orlando Bloom’s son in part after a deceased exboyfriend, she tells Australia’s Daily Telegraph. One of baby Flynn’s middle names, Christopher, was chosen in honour of Kerr’s first boyfriend, Christopher Middlebrook, who died in a car accident as a teenager. “Chris and I had been dating for two years,” she says. “After he died, I wrote him a letter that said I hoped to name my first child after him in some way. I told Orlando and he was the one who said he’d be happy to do that. Orlando’s a good guy.” The baby’s full name is Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom.

Though I don’t work magic in the kitchen as much as I used to, I’m still a cookbook fan. Culinary text and images never fail to inspire me to nag my wife to recreate whatever catches my eye. One of my favourite recent releases is Jeff Potter’s Cooking For Geeks (O’Reilly, $43.99): A macho tome that reads more like an issue of Popular Science than an artsy Gordon Ramsay creation. Potter takes the MythBusters route by explaining the ins and out of everything from baking bread to making things melt in weird ways in what ends up as a fascinating read. But experimenting with Potter may have to wait until after barbecue season: The few months when I can hold up my end of meal creation. One of my fave grilling grapes is zinfandel and the 2008 Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin ($16.95 $19.99) is a mocha-meetsdeep berry wonder that rocks everything from cuts of beef to burgers. These Pork Chops with Yuzu-Miso Marinade are marinated in miso overnight for two reasons. First, it takes time for the pork to absorb the miso flavour. Second, it gives the active bacteria culture in miso time to tenderize the meat. The result is tender, lip-smacking chops with a pleasing touch of heat from yuzu kosho.
Master the grill
Master the grill with tips and trade secrets. 1. Trim excess fat from meat before grilling to help reduce flare-ups. 2. Always brush barbecue sauce on food towards the end of cooking to prevent sugars from burning. 3. Never pierce meat with a fork to flip it on the grill. This releases juices making it less moist.
Preparation:
1
Mix miso, sake, mirin, yuzu kosho, scallions, and sesame oil in bowl to make marinade. Pour three-fourths of marinade into baking dish or rimmed sheet
Ingredients: • 1/4 cup red miso • 1 tablespoon sake • 1 tablespoon mirin • 2 teaspoons red yuzu kosho • 1/4 cup finely chopped scallions (white and green parts) • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon sesame oil • 4 bone-in pork chops (about 11/2 pounds)

Bombers fall apart in first loss of season “I have the ability and the backing to give fair criticism. The only time I have trouble with people giving criticism is when they haven’t walked that walk. RETIRED NBA SUPERSTAR SHAQUILLE O’NEAL, WHO ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT HE’S TAKING AN ON-AIR JOB WITH TNT’S INSIDE THE NBA TELEVISION BROADCAST.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers blew a ten-point fourth-quarter lead Thursday night, surrendering 11 points to Henry Burris’ Calgary Stampeders to lose 21-20 at Canad Inns Stadium. Kicker Justin Palardy missed a potential game-winning 44-yard field goal with 24 seconds left in the game as the Bombers fell to 2-1 on the season.
Prosecution botches Clemens’ trial Judge leaves question of a new trial for former all-star up in the air until September Almost as soon as it began, former baseball star Roger Clemens’ perjury trial ended Thursday — in a mistrial the judge blamed on prosecutors and said a “first-year law student would have known to avoid. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton called a halt to the trial under way after prosecutors showed jurors evidence that he had ruled out — videotaped revelations that former teammate
Andy Pettitte had said he’d told his wife Clemens confessed to using a drug. Walton scolded prosecutors and said he couldn’t let the former all-star pitcher face prison if convicted on such “extremely prejudicial evidence. “Mr. Clemens has to get a fair trial, Walton said. “In my view, he can’t get it now. Defence lawyer Rusty Hardin, who had asked for
“Government counsel should have been more cautious.
U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE REGGIE WALTON
the mistrial declaration, patted an unsmiling Clemens on the back as the judge announced his decision. As he left the courthouse, Clemens did not comment but accepted hugs from a couple of court
workers, shook hands with the security guards and autographed baseballs for fans waiting outside. Walton said he would hold a hearing Sept. 2 to decide whether Clemens should face another trial. Hardin told reporters, “I wouldn’t even hazard a guess about what Walton will decide. Walton could end the prosecution by declaring that a new trial would run
afoul of double jeopardy — the right not to be brought to trial twice on the same charges for the same offence. But experts said it was unlikely that he would go that far, especially since the trial was just under way. Pettitte had told committee investigators that Clemens confessed in 1999 or 2000 that he used human growth hormone. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Calvillo’s greatness becoming unquestionable CRAIG KLEM/ALLSPORT
CFL EXTRA POINTS DAN TOTH
WINNIPEG@METRONEWS.CA
The debate over Anthony Calvillo’s place in CFL history has started, even though the sensational quarterback is a long way from finished. Detractors argue that although A.C.’s career numbers make him appear to be the best QB in CFL history, the Als star is just a capable player who profits from playing on great teams. Plenty of CFL followers will tell you Calvillo’s not as talented as Doug Flutie, Ron Lan-
caster, Jeff Garcia, Warren Moon, etc. The 39-year-old Calvillo last week tied Damon Allen’s all-time CFL record of 394 touchdown passes when he threw for five majors in Montreal’s win over Saskatchewan. While Calvillo might not be your first choice if you were starting an expansion team, he’s more than just a decent QB who was lucky to land with a great franchise. Not only does Calvillo own three Grey Cup rings with the Als, he’s also on course to establishing a new record for career passing yards before season’s end. And don’t be surprised if he caps that off with a fourth Grey Cup ring. Dunigan’s head still in the game: Not long ago, a player suffer-

ing a mild concussion was said to have “had his bell rung” and would often return to the game with little consideration for future effects. Recent advances in science and a more humane approach to player health have made brain injury research a priority.
CFL Hall of Famer Matt Dunigan sat down with the CFL on TSN’s Brian Williams last week to reveal his own personal fight with head injuries and post-concussion syndrome and how concussions have affected his life. Despite retiring 15 years ago, Dunigan is still affected by the dozen concussions he suffered during his stellar career. Dunigan will donate his brain to concussion research in hopes that “they’ll be
able to advance the science and understanding of concussions and brain injuries to help others.” Toothless Lions: B.C. Lions head coach/general manager Wally Buono said it best. “It’s very ugly,” he said. “It’s sickening.” Buono was referring to the video of Lions DB Stanley Franks’ gruesome knee injury, but he could have just as easily been talking about the Leo’s 0-2 start to the CFL season. Franks was taken off the field on a cart, and the initial diagnosis is a severe dislocation of the knee. Now Buono has another headache. In addition to his team’s slow start, Buono now has to make adjustments in his secondary when the 0-2 Lions face Ricky Ray and the 2-0 Edmonton Eskimos Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.
Amateur leads pack at British Open Lewis first amateur to lead round at a major since 1976
‘He could be my grandson,’ says playing partner Watson PETER MORRISON/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Tom Lewis shares a name with one of the British Open’s greatest champions. The kid sure lived up to it Thursday. Lewis, a 20-year-old amateur, shot a 5-under 65 to share the lead after the opening round of golf’s oldest major — a day that was even more special because he played alongside the man he was named after: five-time British Open champion Tom Watson. “I was more nervous not to embarrass myself in front of him,” Lewis said. No worries there. Lewis pulled off some Watsonlike shots at Royal St. George’s, making four straight birdies coming down the stretch before a par-saving tap-in at the 18th left him tied with Thomas Bjorn.
Amateur elite Tom Lewis posted the lowest round ever for an amateur at the British Open. His score of 65 beats the 66s posted by Frank Stranahan in 1950, Tiger Woods’ in 1996 and Justin Rose in 1998.
England’s Tom Lewis shoots out of the bunker on the 6th hole on Thursday.
“I just had to smile inside watching him play,” said the 61-year-old Watson, who needed seven more strokes than his namesake to get around the course.
“I didn’t play particularly well myself, but I certainly was impressed by the way he played.” Lewis’s late-afternoon charge was definitely impressive, but it didn’t total-
ly overshadow an earlymorning round by Bjorn, who was playing at this course on the English seaside for the first time since his meltdown in the 2003 Open.
That year he threw away a two-stroke lead on the final three holes — he needed three swings just to escape the bunker at No. 16 — and allowed Ben Curtis to snatch away the claret jug with one of the sport’s most shocking upsets. Two very different players. Two hugely compelling stories atop the leaderboard. “I’m 40 years old,” Bjorn
said, “and there might just be a little bit more in me.” U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy got off to a sluggish start but was still in the mix, putting up a 71 that left him six strokes back. Considering he played in the morning, when conditions were tougher, McIlroy had no complaints about a round that began with two bogeys on the first three holes. “It was a day where you just needed to grind out a score,” McIlroy said. “Anywhere around even par was a good start.” In the afternoon, the gusting breezes off the Strait of Dover died down and the rain held off, resulting in about twice as many rounds in the 60s as the morning starters put up. Kia the best deal for Winnipeggers C hange is not always convenient. Winnipeggers often navigate through detours and one-lane traffic during construction season, watching as their money gets put to good use to improve their driving experience. And smart Winnipeg drivers are already finding out how to drive their money further, by sitting comfortably behind the wheel of Kia. Birchwood Kia on Regent quickly grew into the largest growing dealership in Manitoba, something Sales Manager Rylie Saunders says is all thanks to positive change and a great team. Saunders, along with General Manager Shayne Rankin and Sales Manager Derek Witty, all joined the Birchwood Kia team within the last year. “We pride ourselves in that we’re not ‘old school’ salespeople,” says Saunders. “I think a lot of people notice that right when they first speak to us. We’re specific to customer
service, and we create a different experience from what people are used to and what they expect.”
“We create a different experience from what people are used to and what they expect.” The Regent Avenue West dealership managed to breathe new life into its sales strategy, while also offering affordable prices drivers can only find locally at Birchwood Kia. With zero per cent financing on every 2011 model and options like heated seats and Bluetooth,
it’s a welcome fit for drivers who are new to the Kia brand.
“Any Kia car suits the Winnipeg consumer,” says Saunders. “It’s affordable, but still has a lot of options, and a five-year bumper-tobumper warranty that’s unheard of in this industry. You can get our vehicle with the lowest payments, the most options and the best warranty.” Birchwood Kia sells the 2012 Kia Sorento at lower payments than competitor’s 2011 “blow-outs” with more options and warranties. It also offers the Kia Forte, which grew to become the top-rated car in its class. “We’ve implemented all these changes to try to become more progressive,” says Saunders. “People will be pleasantly surprised once they come in. They might not be used to the Kia brand, but interested to see what all the hype is about. It is different, but in a positive way.”
