Bluesfest defends weather call Type of stage that collapsed, rented from Montreal’s Groupe Berger, has been in use by Bluesfest for five years Those with day tickets for Sunday’s cancelled shows can get a refund or exchange for a day ticket for the Ottawa Folk Festival or Bluesfest 2012 STEVE COLLINS/FOR METRO

Police secure the collapsed MBNA stage with crime-scene tape yesterday morning. More coverage, page 3.

Jeff O’Reilly had great seats on the MBNA stage for Cheap Trick’s Bluesfest performance Sunday, but he couldn’t see the sky darkening. The general manager of D’Arcy McGee’s Pub was with his daughter Tegan, 12, among the fewer than 40 guests seated at the sides of the stage, with an up-close-andpersonal view of the band. The party ended abruptly when the stage crew cut the sound and began evacuating the backstage area as winds gusted in, he said. They told O’Reilly and his daughter to run as fast and far as they could. “If it wasn’t for them, we’d be dead, he said. “Those guys saved our lives. Yesterday, Bluesfest executive director Mark Monahan defended the judgment call he made about when to stop the show and evacuate LeBreton Flats, despite Environment Canada warning of thunderstorms and high winds earlier in the day. “We were monitoring the weather and what was a (thunderstorm) watch turned into a more severe situation, and when that happened we called it immediately, he said. Ontario’s Ministry of Labour is investigating the stage’s collapse. Investigators and engineers are going over the wreckage and the ministry has requested any video Bluesfest has of the collapse.
