Crime capital of Canada Manitoba tops provinces for violent crime

Manitoba is once again leading the country in violent crime.

Data released Thursday by Statistics Canada shows there were 3.6 murders for every 100,000 people in Manitoba last year, the highest rate among the provinces.

Manitoba also recorded a higher robbery rate than any other province: Twice as high as the national average.

It’s not the first thing people offer to low-income Winnipeggers, but Siloam Mission opened a gym Thursday with free access to its patrons.

“When you’re living on the street, the first thing to take a beating is your health,” said Vicki Olatun-

dun, manager of Siloam Mission’s onsite Saul Sair Health Centre.

“Many (patients) have expressed their desire to work out, but simply can’t afford a gym membership.”

University of Manitoba Occupational Therapy students, Craig Bennett and Nadine Blankvoort, interned at Siloam earlier this year. They developed a fitness program and made cold calls to fitness centres, looking for donated

equipment.

“To go from a concrete floor covered in dust and half-walls put up ... in six weeks,” said Bennett, gesturing around the room.

“We certainly couldn’t have done any of this without the community involvement and the backing of our managers.”

“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback from Siloam patrons,” said Blankvoort.

The gym is open from 2 to 4 p.m, Monday to Friday.

Autobahn A very good and very professional production of one of bad boy Neil LaBute’s more varied and likeable works. In fact, even if you can’t stand the guy (like me), it’s a damn good play and a damn fine production, though it does cut one of the vingettes to make the show run in Fringe time.

Each segment is a lovely short story; some are funny, some are sad, some are both. The segments deal with LaBute themes: power, violence, men, women — all the happy stuff. If I hadn’t just seen it, I’d go see it again. In fact, I think I will, and I might bring the wife if we’re not fighting, or she hasn’t betrayed me, or me her. Did I mention it is very good?

Fear Factor: Canine Edition Even if you’re not a dog person, there’s no denying the power and poignancy of John Grady’s story of a man and his dog. In this case, the dog is Abby, and Grady relates a series of stories involving his beloved companion.

Grady tells these stories with a smooth patter and a dry wit, but delivers a powerful emotional punch with the framing story — one in which he faces the decision of

whether or not to put an ailing Abby to sleep.

Saying that there were considerable sniffles and much dabbing of eyes at the end of Fear Factor: Canine Edition may suggest how that story ends.

But knowing where John and Abby’s story will — and must — end does little to dull its impact.

Police, government, social-welfare agencies and citizens must each share the burden of battling social problems contributing to Winnipeg’s sky-high robbery rate, the city’s top cop says.

Winnipeg’s rate of robberies was more than double the national average in 2010 (176 per 100,000 residents), according to statistics regarding policereported crime released by Statistics Canada Thursday.

It’s a grim statistic that comes despite a 13 per cent drop over 2009 robbery levels here, and declines in many other major centres.

“It’s high. And that’s a real concern for us as a police service and it should be a real concern for the citizens of Winnipeg,” said police Chief Keith McCaskill.

But police aren’t social workers and can’t be expected to enforce the law and solve society’s ills at every turn of the road, McCaskill suggested, naming addictions and poverty as major issues contributing to the high number of robberies.

Police already run a cadet program for kids, place officers in schools and take a leading role in a number of city crimeprevention programs.

Expert opinion Robberies are well-reported to police, so it’s unlikely a statistical anomaly is at play in Statistics Canada’s recent crime findings, said University of Manitoba criminologist Rick Linden.

But robberies are difficult to prevent or predict, and it’s hard to point to one thing that could help bring the number of them down, Linden added.

Police can do geographic mapping and increase patrols, but that won’t get to the root of the problem, Linden suggested.

“It’s not amenable to quick fixes. … It really is the case where you have to reduce the culture of violence, starting with kids and working your way up,” Linden said.

“We have to be part of it, we have to make sure we do as much as we can, but it’s a community at large that has to work hard to reduce the crime in this city,” said McCaskill.

“Socially, there (are) some issues. … All of those things have to be attacked by government, the city, by the community to get people steered away from those,” he said.

Between Jan. 1 and July 19, police have recorded 770 non-commercial robberies, according to city statistics. That’s a decline of four per cent over the same period in 2010.

Ex-general fined for affair

Federal officials have released the names of 30 suspected war criminals they say entered the country illegally.

The government launched a website Thursday identifying the suspects and is asking the public to report any information that could lead to their whereabouts.

There are stringent measures to prevent war criminals from entering the country, but it can be difficult to spot those who apply for asylum using false passports, he said.

The bones of Adolf Hitler’s deputy Rudolf Hess were exhumed under cover of darkness, burned and secretly scattered at sea after his grave became a shrine for thousands of neo-Nazis, a cemetery official said Thursday.

Workers removed Hess’ remains from his family’s plot with the permission of his relatives, cremated the bones and dispersed them before dawn on Wednesday, said Andreas Fabel, a cemetery administrator in the Bavarian town of Wunsiedel.

Hess was captured in 1941 when he parachuted

into Scotland saying he wanted to negotiate peace between Britain and Germany.

The attempt was denounced by Hitler, and Hess later told British authorities that the Nazi leader knew nothing of it. Hess spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of the Second World War allies and since his death in 1987, became a martyr for the far-right. Neo-Nazis have used the anniversary of his death as an occasion to hold large rallies, with Wunsiedel — near the Czech border — often a focal point.

Sell before prices cool: Report Housing market may return to slow period not seen in about 15 years Prices could significantly decline The time may be right for Canadian homeowners to consider selling as industry experts forecast that prices should soon hit a peak and at best flatten over the next few years.

The Royal Bank forecast Thursday that the Canadian market will return to a period of much slower sales and pricing growth.

“Going forward, the housing market will look much like the second half of 1990s, with minimum growth in resales and minimum growth if any in

terms of pricing,” said senior economist Robert Hogue.

In its housing market outlook report, the bank forecast that home resales will grow by 0.9 per cent this year and remain unchanged in 2012, while home prices will increase by 4.4 per cent this year and a slight 0.4 per cent in 2012.

That would mark a moderation or cooling off from strong growth enjoyed between 2002 and 2008. That period was followed by

volatility caused by the global recession and domestic policy changes — such as a sharp drop in interest rates, three rounds of mortgage rule changes and the introduction of the HST in Ontario and British Columbia.

RBC expects Canada’s economy will grow by about three per cent this year and next and continue to generate more jobs and income to offset the cooling effect from higher interest rates.

Attitudes toward Muslims have become slightly more positive in the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Russia compared with five years ago, though negative views between Muslim countries and the West persist on both sides, a Pew Center survey found.

The survey, by Pew’s Global Attitudes Project, found majorities of Muslims surveyed in five of six Muslim-dominant countries and the Palestinian territories described non-Muslim Westerners as selfish and greedy.

In all of the six Western countries surveyed, less than 30 per cent of non-Muslims said they consider Muslims respectful of women.

Ten years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks against the World Trade Centre in the United States, Muslims in the Middle East and Asia and non-Muslims both have concern about Islamic extremism.

when the animals suddenly wandered onto the road and into the peloton.

Old-fashioned action Richard Crouse and Mark Breslin agree that Captain America is more of an action flick than another superhero movie But it has flaws, like sloppy CGI

Richard Crouse: Mark, I went into this with low expectations. I’m kind of superheroed out these days, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a bit long, but it doesn’t feel like the other hero movies we’ve seen recently. The hipness of Iron Man is absent, the jokey feel of Thor is gone. Instead, this is an old-fashioned action adventure movie with extraordinary poets at the heart of it.

What did you think?

Mark Breslin: I’m superheroed out as well but this guy’s no superhero: he’s an enhanced mesomorph with a magic frisbee! The movie works as an action flick, but it’s missing the irony of the source materi-

al. Is America so desperate to believe in its military that it has to go back to “the last good war” to feel good about itself ? And I have other complaints too, like the sloppy CGI. In the beginning, Chris Evans as a 99-pound weakling looked like a bad photoshopped pic from 2003.

RC: I liked its lack of irony.

Perhaps part of the appeal is that in the complicated times we live in it’s refreshing to see a movie that harkens back to a simpler time when the enemy was easily identifiable and a strong guy with a colourful shield and plenty of heart could be a hero. The premesomorph Evans may have been a bit sloppy CGI-

wise, but you have to admit, Red Skull’s lack of identifiable facial features was a nice villainous touch.

MB: It may say too much about me that I always enjoy the villain rather than the hero. And Hugo Weaving was very good indeed, especially with his red skull. And Tommy Lee Jones always brings his game to a movie, even if the role was rote. Same with Stanley Tucci and Toby Young. The satiric USO tour sequence was fun.

And I liked the way the movie ended.

See, Richard? I can find the good in anything, even jingoistic propaganda.

RC: I know it’s jingoistic

propaganda, but it’s 1940s jingoistic propaganda! I liked the way the movie paid tribute to the rah-rah movies of WWII and B movies of the period. The bad guys are really bad, but never fear! The good guys are better. Where else are you going to see giant bombs, each labeled for extra evil effect with the name of the city they are meant to destroy?

MB: The labeling of the bombs was exactly what I wanted more of! I would forgive this movie its flaws if its strengths were greater. But it’s mostly derivative storytelling, choppy editing and unmemorable dialogue.

Good action, though.

Kim Kardashian wants Old Navy to stop using a Canadian lookalike to advertise its clothing. Aside from getting the chance to help update a beloved franchise, there was one main draw about starring in the Smurfs for Neil Patrick Harris: It was nothing like his over-thetop How I Met Your Mother character.

“I spend six-and-a-half, seven months a year playing the chewing-on-thescenery Barney Stinson, and so I look for a role that is different than him in some way during my off time,” he says. And his character, Patrick Winslow, a father-to-be and put-upon marketing exec whose New York apartment becomes a hide-

out for Smurfs, is indeed nothing like Barney.

The character is also apparently a departure from Harris himself, who admits he wouldn’t be as welcoming as his on-screen persona if a gaggle of little blue people were to invade his home.

“I’d probably Taze them and keep them in a small box and quickly find a reality show or some way to make a profit from it, and travel around like the Warner Bros. cartoon with the frog,” he says before stopping to consider the severity of his answer. “I’m Gargamel, apparently.”

Just because Harris has now starred alongside the legendary Smurfs doesn’t mean all his Smurf-related questions have been answered. “Who’s shagging Smurfette, really? They always kind of go, ‘Ooh,’ and then they pass out, but I want to know what’s going on late at night in Smurf Village,” he says. “Does she get passed from Smurf to

Smurf ? Is she a one-Smurf girl? Is Papa involved? That doesn’t seem right at all.

She could swing the other way.”

While Harris has been having fun exploring the world of Smurfs over the summer, it will soon be time to get back to work on his hit sitcom — not that he knows exactly what’s happening next.

While Harris’ Barney is apparently set to tie the knot, they haven’t told him who he’s marrying. “I keep prying them for information, but they fear that I’ll someday be sitting at a big rectangular table around a bunch of people asking me questions and say something that I’m not supposed to.”

Twilight stars surprise fans at Comic-Con Early risers among Twilight fans have gotten a chance to see what some of their big-screen idols look like first thing in the morning.

Not long after dawn broke Thursday, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Elizabeth Reaser and other costars of the supernatural movie franchise made a surprise visit to greet fans who had camped out for days to catch a preview of the next Twilight flick at Comic-Con. Greene, Reed and Reaser, who play members of the Cullen vampire family, were joined by Julia Jones and Boo Boo Stewart, who co-star as kinfolk in the rival werewolf pack.

The actors signed Twilight posters, mugs and other movie memorabilia, posed for pictures with fans and even served some breakfast goodies to “Twihards,” some of whom were in line since Monday afternoon to get into the preview at Comic-Con, a massive gathering for fans of comics, video games, television and film.

The comedy is sharper, the pace brisker, and while Timberlake is

alarmingly limited as an actor, he’s vastly preferable to Ashton Kutcher in No Strings Attached.

Kunis does the heavy lifting to make up for her partner’s blandness, and she nearly runs away with

The only real fault is an emotional storyline about Timberlake’s character’s father and Alzheimer’s, which grounds the movie to a halt.

Plummer plays his father who came out of the closet at 75 before dying of cancer shortly thereafter. There’s also a painfully realistic love story between the broken character played by McGregor and an equally damaged actress played by Melanie Laurent. Dane voluntarily checked himself into a facility to work on getting off pain meds, says his rep Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane, who is expecting his second child with wife Rebecca Gayheart, quietly checked himself into rehab last month as a “preventative measure” to deal with a dependency on painkillers, according to Star magazine.

“Eric felt things spiraling out of control and decided he needed to get some help,” a source says.

The actor’s rep confirms the rehab stint, saying in a statement that Dane “voluntarily checked himself into a treatment facility to help him get off of pain medication that he was prescribed for a sports injury that he suffered over the recent hiatus. He reports back to work next week.

French wines, though, have a reputation for being full-bodied and not so easy drinking.

I spent two weeks travelling the country and was pleasantly surprised to re-discover how approachable its wines actually are, especially the reds from Beaujolais. Balanced, soft and fruity, they’re ideal introductions to French wines and make perfect summer sippers after a short time in an ice bucket.

At 0-3, some passionate Saskatchewan fans are calling for the new coach’s head on a platter while other scapegoats range from erratic starting QB Darian Durant to defensive co-ordinator Richie Hall, who replaced ‘D’ guru Gary Etcheverry in the off-season.

B.C.’s slow star nothing new under Buono: Is it time to fire Wally Buono?

When the B.C. Lions last started a season 0-3 in 2002, the perfect solution was to gas Steve Buratto and replace him with Adam Rita.

Lions owner David Braley said this week he’s confident in Buono (for now) and you can’t really blame him for sticking with a winner. Buono’s Lions have suffered slow starts the last two seasons before turning it around in the second half of the year. Additional pressure to make a move this season comes from hosting the 2011 Grey Cup, but whacking Buono at this juncture is an unlikely solution.
