DNA cracks 30-year-old case Accused GTA rapist unmoved by arrest

The hunt by GTA police for Alexander Winston Sylvester began 30 years ago, at a time when there were no computerized police data banks or DNA testing. It successfully ended this month when Sylvester, 55, stood up in Old City Hall Court to face charges of

sexual assault with a weapon, kidnapping, forcible confinement, robbery and threatening death. One of the four sex attacks Sylvester’s charged with dates back to 1981, when a 14-year-old girl was dragged into bushes and raped in Mississauga. That victim, now

Has served time in U.S. for range of charges including murder 44, told police she’d be willing to testify in court. So have three women — all of whom are now seniors — who were sexually assaulted at gunpoint in their homes in the Huntingwood Avenue and Brimley Road area of Scarborough in June 1993.

Forensic evidence from the 14year-old’s attack had been stored in a Peel police fridge until 2002, when an officer decided to send it to the downtown Toronto Centre of Forensic Sciences for testing. Shortly afterwards, the victim learned a suspect had finally been

identified in her attack. Sylvester originally arrived in Toronto in 1980 as a visitor from Jamaica. Since the 1990s, the GTA has remained a home of sorts for Sylvester, who once jumped parole in the U.S. to visit a wife here. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

There are about 5,598 Toronto officers, 2,068 full-time civilian staff Chief Bill Blair has determined that as many as 750 officers and 400 civilian staff will need to be let go in order to hit the mayor’s budget target, police sources say. Mayor Rob Ford said last Friday that if it were up to him, no Toronto police officer would be laid off to fill the funding gap. But the Ford administration is still demanding the service find 10 per cent in cuts — about $84 million — in a budget made up almost entirely of salary and benefit costs. This math problem has created confusion, both within the police service itself and on its civilian oversight board, about the mayor’s intentions. “On one hand, (Ford is) saying no layoffs. On the

Laid-off workers turn anger on Ottawa LIEM VU/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Critics call for unemployment law reform Financial support on hold unless company declares bankruptcy Bob Brigaitis and his wife, Cindy Rupert, considered themselves an IQT family. As operation managers, they spent ungodly hours at the job, working weekends and evenings to file reports. Their kids grew up listening to conference calls on the drive to school. But it all came to a halt when Brigaitis and Rupert were abruptly laid off on July 15 along with 1,200 workers in Ontario and Quebec without notice, wages or severance pay. A week later, the anger toward IQT co-founders David and Alex Mortman is being redirected to the Canadian government. “We have a month (of savings) to keep us afloat and then we’re done. We’ll lose our house and our cars,” said Rupert, fighting back tears.

Under federal law, workers can claim up to $3,400 in unpaid wages, severance and vacation pay under the wage earner protection program (WEPP). The only catch is the company must file bankruptcy, which IQT Solutions has not done. “In our experience, a lot of companies don’t go through with formal bankruptcies … they simply shut down,” said Mary Gellatly, a legal worker with Parkdale Community Legal Services. Gellatly said this leaves workers without financial support, which is problematic since low-income employees often live from paycheque to paycheque. Following the layoffs, provincial Labour Minister Charles Sousa also urged the federal government to

Many said none of the options provided the immediate help they need. Employment Ontario is offering the Second Career program to former workers. It gives up to $28,000 for skills training to laid-off employees. Employment insurance is also pending for them because they did not get records of employment from IQT, Brigaitis said.

Norway suspect on anti-Muslim crusade

HAKON MOSVOLD LARSEN/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Man who confessed to the attacks is charged with terrorism Wants to explain himself in court: Lawyer The man blamed for the terrorist attacks on Norway’s government headquarters and an island retreat for young people that left at least 93 dead was motivated by a desire to bring about a revolution in Norwegian society, his lawyer said yesterday. A manifesto he published online — which police are poring over and said was posted the day of the attack — ranted against Muslim immigration to Europe and vowed revenge on “indigenous Europeans,” whom he accused of betraying their heritage. It said that they would be punished for their “treasonous acts.” The lawyer for the 32year-old Norwegian suspect, Anders Behring Breivik, said his client

Muslims in Britain on alert Group says it warned British police of increasing hostility from far-right Some of Britain’s mosques are adding extra security after the terrorist attacks in Norway, Muslim community leaders said yesterday. his lawyer, Geir Lippestad. Britain’s Muslims have seen an increase in attacks since 2005, when homegrown suicide bombers killed 52 people in rushhour attacks in London.

An online manifesto ranting against Muslim immigration to Europe was written by the alleged assailant, 32-year-old Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik, and he had been working on it for years, said

Norwegians shocked by tragedy Flowers and a sign left on the Norwegian war memorial on the Halifax waterfront this weekend expressed heartfelt concern for the nearly 100 people who were killed in a horrifying terrorist attack. “It’s a terrible thing. The country is in total shock,” said Steinar Engeset, who has worked in the Royal Norwegian Consulate in Dartmouth for over 40 years. He said he took photos of the thoughtful sign and wants to send it to Norwegian newspapers to show his countrymen that Canadians care. Engeset said he’s talked to a number of Nova Scotia Norwegians over the weekend. “They are more or less speechless.… It’s something that’s unbelievable,” he said. “It was young people. What motive is there

to take out almost 100 young people?” He’s also tried to contact a number of friends in Norway, including one who works in the office of the prime minister. He said it’s been difficult because the government asked people to stay off their cellphones to help keep lines clear for people who are trapped in the rubble. But while he waits for word, Engeset said he’s working on plans to hold a church service. “I would like a church service where we’d invite Scandinavians plus Canadians.” Marshall Burgess, president of the Scandinavian Society of Nova Scotia, said between a quarter to onethird of their members are from Norway. Nova Scotia Nominee Program, Economic Stream Refund Preliminary Notice If you paid fees to the Economic Stream of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, there is a proposed settlement of your claim being considered by the courts. Read this to find out more.

What is this about? A lawsuit was started against the Province of Nova Scotia in 2009. The goal was to get a refund for people who applied for and paid fees into the former Economic Stream of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program. The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia is now being asked to certify that lawsuit as a class action. Your legal rights may be affected. The lawyers for both sides have made a deal that would give a refund to eligible people. The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia is being asked to approve the settlement as fair and reasonable.

Would I be included if the court approves the settlement? You would be if you (1) paid money to Nova Scotia under the Economic Stream of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, (2) landed and obtained permanent resident status in Canada, and (3) did not already get a refund. As long as you told the truth in your application and immigration filings, you should be eligible for a refund.

How much would I get?

Would I have to pay anything out of my own pocket? No.The lawyers' fees will simply be deducted as set out above. You will not be billed. The amount deducted from your own award for legal fees will be 15% or less. There is a costs award of $450,000 proposed to be paid on account of fees by the government directly. The Supreme Court must approve the lawyer’s fee as fair and reasonable.

Can I apply to get my money now? No. The court has to approve the settlement first. If you would like to make sure that you receive a claim form later, you can email your details to the lawyers for the proposed class. The contact lawyer for the class is Greg McMullen, who can be reached at gmcmullen@branmac.com or 604-631-2560.

What do I do if I want to support or oppose the settlement? Let Greg McMullen know. You can email or mail him your views at gmcmullen@branmac.com or 1410-777 Hornby Street, Vancouver BC, V6Z 1S4. You also have the right to attend the hearing, which will take place at The Law Courts Building, 1815 Upper Water St., Halifax on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 9:30 a.m.

What if I do not want to be part of the class action if it is approved? If the settlement is approved, you have the option not to participate. You will be able to complete an opt out form if you do not want to receive any benefits or be bound by the result. If you do not want to take part, you have to opt out. If you opt out, you will not get any benefit from the settlement.

What if too many people opt out? If more than 50 people opt out, the Province will have the right to cancel the settlement. Neither the Province nor the lawyer for the class expect this to occur however.

I have other questions. For more information, visit http://www.branchmacmaster.com/nova-scotiaimmigration/. The formal court documents can be found there. If you still have questions, just contact the lawyer appointed by the court to act for the class, Greg McMullen at Branch MacMaster LLP, at gmcmullen@branmac.com or 604-631-2560.

U.S. debt talks still deadlocked Opposition from new Republicans who signed pledge not to hike taxes Democrats and Republicans were deep in crisis talks yesterday on painful cuts in U.S. government spending as the price for extending the country’s borrowing limit and avoiding catastrophic default, but each side was sticking to positions unacceptable to the other with time running out before an Aug. 2 deadline. House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in the lower chamber, said he is working with his members on a two-part plan to raise the debt limit. U.S. President Barack Obama and the Democrats insist that any plan must raise the borrowing limit enough to keep the issue off the agenda until after

After a long $1T day of meetings Saturday, U.S. lawmakers were looking at a plan that would boost the debt limit immediately by roughly $1 trillion US — about enough to last through this year — while locking in slightly more in spending cuts. the 2012 election. 55% Artist Jack Dylan gets sketchy at the Drake Hotel’s Life-Like Drawing sessions.

TAKE A SHOT AT DRAWING AT THE DRAKE URBAN COMPASS

At the centre of the Drake Hotel’s rooftop bar, a buxom blond is entertaining an entranced audience by doing LIA GRAINGER nothing more than perching METRO TORONTO motionless on the edge of her chair. The crowd that has gathered — an eclectic crew of men and women, young and old — gaze at her intently, glancing away only to scribble furiously on the large pads they clutch in their laps. “Life drawing is like exercise for artists,” says Jack Dylan as he quickly traces the curve of the model’s back with one fluid stroke of his pencil. Dylan is a prolific fine artist and illustrator for magazines and newspapers, and today he’s playing host at Life-Like Drawing at the Drake Hotel, a series of free life-drawing sessions that take place every Tuesday until the end of the August in the Drake’s rooftop Sky Yard. Billed as a “drink and draw,” the event is definitely a step up from high school art class. There’s music, sunshine, cocktails and a rotating roster of “creatively clad” models plucked from the Drake’s own staff. Dylan himself knows a thing or two about posing: “It’s funny — I actually worked as a life-drawing model myself when I was in art school,” he says with a grin. Today’s model, 22-year-old Shannon Murphy, works at the Drake General Store and has never posed for artists before — an activity professionals will tell you is infinitely harder than it looks. Clad in jean shorts and a tank top, she appears nervous as she strikes her first pose, but quickly relaxes as Dylan calls out for her to switch it up, guiding the group through a series of one, two and five minute poses. Murphy extends one arm and then pulls the other back to mimic shooting a bow-and-arrow. “I’m reenacting the zodiac,” she exclaims as the group chuckles. “That’s brilliant,” says Dylan. The artistic skill level of those in attendance varies wildly. Some of the first-timers chuckle at their own oddly proportioned but nonetheless charming efforts, while the OCAD students and professional artists that dot the crowd dash out impressively lifelike renderings of Murphy’s seated form. As the evening winds down, participants peruse their neighbours’ work. Regardless of the finished product, everyone involved seems pleased to have spent a creative evening in the sunniest classroom in Toronto.

Volkswagen Golf that was once owned by Kate Middleton attracted close to $75,000 as bidding closed on eBay yesterday. Book value on a 10year-old Golf is about $5,700. The difference with this used car is that it comes with a document that says it was once owned by Prince William’s new bride. She bought the car in 2001 while she was a student at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. It was there that she met and began dating Prince Andrew. After putting on about 100,000 kilometres, Kate passed the car on to her brother James in 2007. A few years later, the Middletons made a deal with a local car dealership in Berkshire, and the car ended up with the dealer owner’s son, Sonny Brazil. “When I saw who had had the car, it was quite a surprise, and I thought it might be a nice piece of history,” said the 21year-old Brazil. With his eyes set on a down payment toward a house, Brazil decided to put the car up for auction.

Study finds link between penis size, economy To his surprise, a Finnish doctoral student has discovered size really does matter when you compare penis length and world economic growth. But despite rigorous analysis and careful mathematical charting of data, Tatu Westling isn’t quite ready to, as he puts it, “imply that I believe in causality at this point.” The Helsinki University economic doctoral student’s study says penis

size, more than democracy, has a “robust” effect on gross domestic product. The healthiest economies grow in countries with the penis sizes of 13.5 centimetres, just shy of the average. Canada measures 13.92. “One striking result is the collapse of the GDP after male organ exceeds the length of 16 centimetres,” Westling concludes. “Male organ alone can explain 20 per cent of the between-country variation in GDP growth rates between 1960 and 1985.” Westling’s study employs a recognized 121-country dataset also used by leading economists, including chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke, to study economic growth. Amy Winehouse, the beehived British soul-jazz diva, possessed self-destructive habits that overshadowed a distinctive musical talent.

Troubled talent Lately, Winehouse had been more famous for her druggy exploits than her performances. Anyone who saw the YouTube footage of a June concert in Belgrade knew she was ill — she cancelled her European tour immediately after. Before Saturday, that clip was a funny train

Cowboys & Aliens an ‘8-year-old’s fantasy’ Comic-Con fans get first glimpse of sci-fi Western flick

Giddy-up: Daniel Craig attends the premiere of Cowboys & Aliens at Comic-Con 2011 at San Diego Civic Theatre Saturday in San Diego, California.

The star-studded Cowboys & Aliens cast walked the red carpet in San Diego on Saturday, giving Comic-Con its first Hollywood-style movie premiere. Fans lined up in front of the San Diego Civic Theatre to see the sci-fi Western’s starring actors, who include Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Keith Carradine. The film’s director, Jon Favreau, and producers Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer also were at the premiere. Rockwell called the mash-up of film genres “a total 8-year-old’s fantasy.” Hundreds of Comic-Con attendees followed clues texted to their cellphones to win tickets to the event. “This kind of overshad-

ows Comic-Con,” said 22year-old Khalil Tiner of Las Vegas, a six-year veteran of the fan festival. “This is something new, and it’s exciting.” Wendy Lee of Los Angeles and Chris Saguisag of San Francisco, said they enjoyed dashing around town trying to win tickets. “We got a lot of cardio running after the bricks” that contained a chance to attend the premiere, Lee said. “It’s something we worked for really hard.” The couple was in line hours ahead of the scheduled showing, but they didn’t mind missing the happenings inside the San Diego Convention Center. “We already saw everything we wanted to see,” Lee said. Favreau said he unveiled

Red carpet shift The film’s director, Jon Favreau showed early footage from Cowboys & Aliens during a Comic-Con panel last year. Favreau invited Comic-Con fans to be a part of the premiere to “see what that part of the equation is like.” “They generally don’t get to experience that part of it,” he said. “That’s more of a Hollywood thing.”

The cast of Snow White and The Huntsman from left, Sam Claflin, Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron pose for a photo at the Comic-Con International 2011 convention on Saturday in San Diego, California.

Twilight’s Stewart suits up for battle in Snow White remake Kristen Stewart dons armour and wields a huge sword and shield for her next movie. Rest assured, it will not be your mother and father’s Snow White. Stewart joined other cast and crew Saturday at the Comic-Con fan convention for a preview of next year’s Snow White and the Huntsman, an action-packed twist on the fairy tale. The Twilight star told a Comic-Con crowd that doing a sweet, traditional Snow White was not something “I was jumping at.” What attracted her was that this Snow White was a bold leader with her feet firmly on the ground. “Also, I get to have a sword and stuff,” Stewart

said. “Really cool weapons.” The movie is due out next June and is one of two Snow White movies Hollywood has coming. The other, due out next March, features Julia Roberts as the evil queen. The cast of Stewart’s Snow White includes Charlize Theron as the wicked queen, Chris Hemsworth as a rugged huntsman and Sam Claflin as a prince. The movie starts shooting in a few weeks. Director Rupert Sanders showed off photos of the stars in costume, among them Stewart in her fighting outfit and Theron in a sleek black gown with savagely high and sharp collars.

Sanders also showed a photo of the dwarves that accompany Snow White in this version, all standing in a row looking scruffier than a gang in a police lineup. The actors playing them include Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost and Toby Jones. There are eight dwarves rather than the usual seven. Sanders said “there are eight because there are a few great lines when one of them gets killed.”

Freida Pinto is the envy of women Comic-Con. She gets to sex up the star of the new Superman movie in her upcoming action tale Immortals. Pinto and Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in Man of Steel, wound up getting acquainted quickly when Immortals went into production. Director Tarsem Singh told a Comic-Con audience Saturday that the sex scene was the first thing shot on the first day of filming. Immortals arrives in theatres in November.

Another Earth was a surprise award-winning success at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, coming out of nowhere as the fiction debut from documentary filmmakers Mark Cahill and Brit Marling (who co-wrote the script with Marling starring and Cahill directing, shooting and editing). Their film is both a metaphysical science fiction movie about a world with a duplicate earth and a delicate character piece about a young woman with a troubled past. In short, it’s a unique vision by a pair of emerging talents. With an odd concept in their heads and no fiction credits to their names, the filmmakers simply started

The fledgling filmmakers have officially started new careers, but hope that as the budget and scale of their films expand, they can still retain the same level of artistic control. “It’s a huge benefit to know how to do everything on a set,” said Cahill. “I think all of those different departments on a film can be like one artistic brushstroke and I’ll still be heavily involved with all of it in the future.”

Guilt: A mother’s disease Sometimes as a mom everything can be totally perfect Yet you feel this gnawing sensation that something is just not right It may be irrational but it feels very real ELISABETH BRAW METRO WORLD NEWS

Riley Harriff, 5, and his sister Maddy, 4, are happy children. They’re well-adjusted, too, and do well in pre-school. But even so, their mother, Roberta, feels incessantly guilty. “Every day I have times of feeling guilty for working too much, or having to work at all when I see so many stay-at-home moms,” she says. “I feel guilty that I let them watch too much TV.” Harriff, 37, works fulltime as a human resources administrator in Chicago. “Sometimes I feel guilty because other kids are in dance classes and do sports, while we don’t have the time or extra money to do those things with them right now. The guilt is constant!” On a rational level, Harriff’s guilt feelings are misplaced — but virtually every mother has them. “Mother’s guilt goes back to biblical times,” says Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, a professor of psychology at Temple University and the author of Einstein Never

used Flashcards: How Children Really Learn and Why They Need To Play More and Memorize Less. “But today’s mothers are expected to do it all, and they don’t have extended family nearby. And the grass is always greener on the other side: stay-athome mothers want a job, ‘working mothers’ want to stay home, and mothers with part-time work feel insufficient in both roles.” But working mothers feel guilty more often. “I have one hour in the morning and two hours before bed with my kids, and most of that time is spent getting dressed, eating, and getting ready for bed,” says Harriff. “It’s hard to feel like you are able to have any quality time with them.” Though most scientific studies show no difference between children of stayat-home-mothers and children of working mothers, some reports reverberate in the mother-guilt community. One, earlier this year, showed that children of working mothers gain two pounds more per year than other children. Another study this year showed that when a moth-

Roberta Harriff with Maddy and Riley.

er works outside the home, her child’s risk of having overnight hospitalizations, asthma episodes, injuries and poisonings increases by 200 per cent.

There’s no formula to fix mother’s guilt, says Hirsh-Pasek. “The best mothers are the ones who make peace with themselves. If you don’t have

dinner ready on time, don’t say, ‘I failed again!’ See it as an opportunity to teach your child that humans are not perfect and don’t have to be.”

Saving the world’s oceans GETTY IMAGES

Philippe Cousteau Jr. talks to Metro about his efforts to educate on conserving the world’s oceans KARIN WASTESON

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA

The acute decaying health of the world’s oceans surfaced in a report by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean in June. Metro met Philippe Cousteau Jr., grandson of legendary filmmaker and marine biologist Jacques Cousteau, in London to discuss the future of our coral reefs. What is the future of the coral reefs?

A recent report cited coral reefs as one of the indicators of the general decline in ocean health.

“Eat less meat, more local and seasonal produce. Use organic cotton and public transport. Every person in the world has power to make the world a better place.”

By some estimates we’ve lost already about 25 per cent of the world’s coral reefs. And further estimates suggest that over the next few decades we’ll lose another 25 per cent. What will happen if we lose the coral reefs?

PHILIPPE COUSTEAU JR

A tremendous amount of seafood either has its origins in, or is related to, coral reef ecosystems and a lot of people rely on them, especially developing nations. If the coral reefs had been healthy along the coastlines in South East Asia, the damage of the tsunami would have been greatly reduced. Protecting nature for

nature’s sake isn’t always enough justification for everybody in the world; it ought to be, but there are real human issues here as well, so corals are very important. Why is the health of the coral reefs declining?

Philippe Cousteau Jr., says coral reefs place a unique role in safeguarding our human habitat.

Coral is coloured because of an algae living inside it. As oceanic temperature rises, which is happening all over the world, the al-

gae leaves and the coral can’t survive. If corals are dying, it means that throughout the oceans something is wrong. It’s a great indicator of pollution. How does coral gardening work?

The corals are taken out of the ocean and put under lamps and given perfectly clean water and perfect temperatures, just like you would in a nursery with a tree or a plant or flowers. What can we do as individuals to save the seas?

Buy environmentallyfriendly cleaning products, detergents, soaps, and use them as little as possible. Eat less meat, more local and seasonal produce. Use organic cotton and public transport. Every person in the world has power to make the world a better place.

Cadel Evans won the Tour de France yesterday, becoming the first Australian champion to win cycling’s greatest race. The 34-year-old Evans crossed the finish line on the Champs-Élysées at the end of the largely ceremonial final stage. He had virtually secured the title with his ride in the time trial in Grenoble a day earlier. Andy Schleck of Luxembourg finished second overall for the third straight year, with brother Frank Schleck in third. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Toronto Blue Jays have finally built a nest in Cooperstown. Roberto Alomar and Pat Gillick were given plaques beside one another in the Baseball Hall of Fame after getting inducted as part of the same class yesterday. It was fitting, as each of their memorials included a reference to the World Series titles they won together in Toronto in 1992 and ’93. Alomar spoke passionately about the five seasons he spent as a member of the Blue Jays during his acceptance speech.

The sharp-fielding second baseman thanked Gillick for the 1990 trade that brought him to Toronto and indicated the honour is a chance to give back to the fans in the city. “My time in Toronto was the best of my career,” said Alomar. “It was with Toronto that we won two World Series together — you guys embraced me from Day 1. You were with me through ups and downs and I am so proud to represent you here in Cooperstown as the first Toronto Blue Jay inducted into the Baseball Hall of

Brett Cecil pitched a fourhitter for his second complete game in his last four starts as Toronto beat the Texas Rangers 3-0 last night. It was the first career shutout for Cecil (3-4), whose only other complete game in his 55 games was in a loss July 5 at Boston. The left-hander allowed only four singles to the AL West-leading Rangers, who had only one runner reach second base. Jose Bautista had an RBI double and a diving catch in an unusual spot to back up Cecil, who struck out seven and walked two. Bautista’s hit sent home Yunel Escobar, who led off the sixth with his third hit. Edwin Encarnacion and Travis Snider had consecutive RBI doubles later in the inning off all-star right-hander Alexi Ogando (10-4). Until Nelson Cruz reached with a two-out infield hit in the ninth on a slow roller toward third base, the other Rangers singles had been leading off innings. They still were never CANADIAN OPEN

able to put together a runscoring frame against Cecil. The Rangers lost for only the third time in 17 games overall, and had their nine-game home Country Club. It was O’Hair’s fourth PGA Tour victory but the first since 2009. He shot a 2-under 68 to finish at 4 under in the $5.2-million US tournament. Canada’s Adam Hadwin began the day one back of the leader, slipped down the leaderboard, but then battled back to finish in a tie for fourth place. winning streak ended. It was the fifth time this season the Rangers were shut out, but the first by an individual pitcher. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

“I just think you appreciate the blessings you have,” said the 29year-old from West Chester, Pa., who collected $936,000 US. “Sometimes when you are playing well, you take that good play for granted. It’s not easy out here. There are a lot of good players. To win out here and play well is difficult. I’m not the type of player that is going to win 10 times in a year. I just think I’ve learned to appreciate being where I am right now.” THE CANADIAN PRESS
