Province, HRM waiting for federal support for convention centre project RYAN TAPLIN/METRO

Members of the Sobeys Penhorn Heartbeats team yell “charge” as they pedal around Dartmouth Crossing aboard the Heart and Stroke Big Bike yesterday. More than 100 teams are scheduled to ride the bike in 36 communities around the province this summer to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. RYAN TAPLIN/METRO

A hastily scheduled event featuring Defence Minister Peter MacKay next week in Halifax has once again fanned the flames of convention centre speculation. MacKay is set to address the Halifax Chamber of Commerce on Monday morning. According to his office, he’ll be discussing “federal investments on infrastructure in Nova Scotia’s economy.” MacKay’s office was mum on the specific content of Monday’s event, as well as the nature of another announcement scheduled for Tuesday. Premier Darrell Dexter will be in attendance on Monday, but will not be speaking. “(Dexter) pretty much knows what’s going to be announced, but it’s not his announcement to make,” said Jennifer Stewart, Dexter’s press secretary. Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Janet Creamer said they received the call to schedule the

event on Tuesday morning. “We’re under the impression they’re making some announcePeter MacKay ment,” said Creamer. “They definitely did say the infrastructure projects he’ll be talking about … (include) the convention centre and the shipbuilding project.” MacKay made headlines this week when he told reporters there were details still to be worked out, but the federal government was “ready to go” on the convention centre file. The federal government was initially asked to contribute $47 million to the project. Since April, the overall cost of the project has gone up, but it isn't known if the federal portion of the ask has increased. ALEX BOUTILIER
