CUPE leader says she won’t run again Looming contract talks expected to be combative Mayor has vowed to shrink city’s payroll, possibly through layoffs Dembinski’s term ends same day as contracts expire The union leader representing more than 18,000 City of Toronto “inside workers” has announced she’s retiring just as contract talks loom with representatives of Mayor Rob Ford’s administration. Ann Dembinski released a letter to members of CUPE Local 79 yesterday stating that, after 11

years at the helm, she won’t run for re-election in November. Dembinski said in an interview she decided on the weekend not to seek re-election, noting she started working for the city 36 years ago and her family life “has been on hold” because of the long hours demanded of a union leader.

“I’ve never run away from a fight in my life, and my members will attest to that.” ANN DEMBINSKI, HEAD OF CUPE LOCAL 79

She said she’ll be involved in contract talks with the city right

up to the end of the year, and potentially after if the local asks. In 2009, Dembinski led her members, alongside their 416 counterparts, off the job for 39 days, some say setting the stage for then-mayor David Miller’s replacement by the right-leaning Ford. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

No wildlife vets to aid dying deer

RODAN GALIT/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

After she was hit by a car early Sunday morning, the deer lay helpless in the middle of a residential west-end street for nearly four hours. Coe Hill Drive — just west of Grenadier Pond in High Park, from where the frightened whitetail is likely to have bounded — was closed and concerned citizens were dabbing the

animal’s eyes and head with a cold compress, like it was a sick child. The injured deer had severe injuries to its head and internal organs; it needed to be tranquilized and relocated, and probably required euthanasia. A police officer was on scene, trying to find a wildlife veterinarian to take the situation off his

hands. The Toronto Zoo’s vet was tied up in surgery and would be at least another two hours. No others were available. The deer — 200 pounds of immobilized terror — had no chance of survival. There are no organizations in Ontario, let alone the GTA, that can rehabilitate injured adult deer.

Falling glass causes injury

STEVE RUSSELL/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Fourth building to rain glass in Toronto this summer Linked to the same developer, Lanterra Another glass bomb exploded in Toronto’s downtown skyline yesterday morning, leaving one woman bloodied and scores scrambling for cover. Glass rained down from a balcony on the 29th floor of the Murano condo’s south tower onto Bay Street around 11:30 a.m. Pedestrians and cyclists heard what they thought was the sound of rain, before realizing it was shards of glass. Some fell on a woman in her 30s, slicing her wrist and leaving a pool of blood where she was treated, although paramedics said the injury was minor. This is the fifth time balcony glass has showered the roads around the Murano’s two condo buildings near Bay and College streets, but the first time from the south tower. “We don’t know why it’s happening, and continues

While the glass installer on the north tower went out of business a few years ago, the south tower’s balcony manufacturer and installer, Toro Aluminum Railings, was on site yesterday afternoon. “We don’t know what caused the breakage right now,” said Mike D’Agnillo, vice-president of Toro, “but we do have engineers on site who will be reporting to us shortly.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

The cream of the crop Thirteen high school students in the Greater Toronto Area are at the top of their class, graduating with near-perfect averages CONTRIBUTED

Navneet Natt, 18, earned 100 per cent average and her dad Balbir Singh, who works as a cab driver, is more than proud of her.

Navneet Natt and Ashley Deonarain both reached for the top, and it paid off, graduating from high school with a perfect 100 per cent average. The Peel District School Board students are among 13 in Greater Toronto who are at the top of their class, graduating with impressive averages while also volunteering or holding down a part-time job — and managing to squeeze in a social life, too. “I never thought it could actually happen,” said Natt, who tied for top spot in the Peel public board with Deonarain, with 100 per cent in their top six subjects. Natt remembers reading about a student from her school, Brampton’s Turner Fenton secondary, who was the board’s top scholar with a 100 per cent average (something that happened in 2009 and 2010 as well as this year). “After hearing that I thought: ‘Wow! I wish I could do that as well.’ ” Natt’s parents, who immigrated to Canada from India, left their homeland to give her a better life, something she said was always in her mind. Both parents worked in the medical field in India; her father,

“They sacrificed so much; they had a great life in India but left so that I could have a good education. It made me realize that I shouldn’t take it for granted, and it made me work that much harder ... so their sacrifices weren’t in vain.” NAVNEET NATT, ON HER PARENTS

Deonarain credited strong family ties for her success as well, saying her parents instilled the importance of education since her childhood. Both also cited the support of their teachers. For Tony Pontes, director of education for the Peel District School Board, such academic achievement — both top scholars were in the enriched International Baccalaureate program — is impressive. “(It) requires an extremely high level of commitment and determination,” said Pontes. “... Get politically involved: Union president IAN WILLMS/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

The head of Canada’s largest teachers’ union is calling on members to get political in the Ontario election to fight the rightwing tide he says threatens public education. Warning the shutdown of many school libraries could be a sign of more cuts to come, president Sam Hammond told the annual meeting of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario that teachers have an obligation to fight to keep public schools “the great equalizer” against poverty and injustice. TRANSIT IN THE CITY

Driver, riders chime in Ever show up late to work because your train broke down? Or forked over a small fortune to ride a cab home because you missed the last bus? It looks like you’re not alone. From tardy service to illegible timetables, Metro readers from coast to coast shared their beefs — and praises — with transit in their city. Here’s what you had to say ...

Commuters should be educated on the rules and policies transit operators have to follow, says TTC driver Sherry Newton. “One rule in particular: Once we pull away from the platform, we’re not supposed to stop again. And then people yell and scream at you for not stopping to pick them up,” she said. “What they don’t know is that it’s our policy.” If TTC drivers break the rule and get rear-ended, they’re automatically at fault and get hit with a three-day suspension without pay, according to Newton. With announcements posted at stations regarding request stops and the usual

bylaws, Newton says some changes have been made. But more effort should be put into educating commuters so they have a better understanding of the rules TTC employees have to abide by, she says. “It would be nice if they were more aware of our do’s and don’ts,” said Newton.

Coming up next Grab a copy of Metro tomorrow for the final instalment of our three-part transit series. We’ll look at what readers from coast to coast would do if they could start from scratch and build their own transit system, as well as the role of smartphones in making transit more predictable and user-friendly.

I hate that they open so late on Sundays, but I love the Request Stop program they have for women, and I wish it would be also (available) on streetcars.

I would like to see a subway line go across Eglinton and address the issues that are the most pressing, and I’d like to see it access the outlying areas.

They need more buses. The times that you wait for the scheduling, it’s not consistent. If I’m late for work, sometimes it’s due to the fact that it’s not running on time.

I really liked the new subway trains that came out. They were spacious ... and there was security on every single train. ... I’d like to see more of those new trains.

It’s very convenient to go around the city, it’s affordable. The only disadvantage is that it can be very crowded at times. (And) lately there’s been a lot of technical problems.

You have to wait a long time (for service). ... But what I love about it is that it’s always accessible to people who need to get downtown who don’t want to drive or have cars.

There’s always some type of delay. ... I basically have to add an extra hour just to get to my destination. Timing is not consistent. If they know that, they need to put it on their sign.

Better service. I find they discriminate against youth. ... (The ticket-booth worker) will drop the coins to make sure I put in the exact three dollars and I find that degrading.

Let it snow, Kiwis say

SARAH IVEY/NEW ZEALAND HERALD/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Residents of New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, are taking delight in the sight of snow falling in what forecasters say is a once-ina-lifetime event. Services across the country were disrupted yesterday by the snowfalls, which were accompanied by heavy rain and high winds. Mail delivery in many centres was cancelled, as were

some flights, roads, libraries and swimming pools. The few inches of snow Wellington got over the past two days are the most in at least 30 years, so people are taking to the streets with cameras and cheers. Forecasters predict the cold snap will continue through Wednesday.

Denounces circus atmosphere as lawyers, activists vie for attention The judge trying ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters who toppled his regime ordered a halt to the live broadcast of his trial yesterday after a chaotic session in which lawyers pushed, shoved and scuffled to get on television. Showing the hearings live on state television had been a nod by Judge Ahmed Rifaat to activists who complained that the military rulers now in charge of the country were dragging their feet bringing Mubarak and stalwarts of his regime to justice. “The aim is to remove the humiliation. Now, God knows how long the trial will take,” said Alaa elAswany, a bestselling novelist and prominent rights

Blind justice The decision was met with suspicion by Ramadan Ahmed, father of a 16year-old protester killed during the 18-day uprising that toppled the regime. “This is not correct. How can I be reassured and feel the justice,” said Ahmed, who was refused access to the courtroom. “I want to see justice realized before my eyes.”

activist. Rifaat said his decision to stop the broadcasts was designed to “protect the public interest.” He did not elaborate, but the presence of cameras, television commentators and journalists interviewing lawyers had given the trial a circus-like atmosphere.

Keeper of the legend Phillips’ adopted son, William R. Phillips, believed his stepfather was Butch Cassidy, said Pointer, who interviewed him in the 1970s. William R. Phillips has since died. In 1938, after her husband died of cancer, Gertrude Phillips told a Cassidy researcher that she and her husband had known Cassidy but that Phillips was not him. She did so only because she “didn’t want the notoriety,” Pointer said William told him. The many reports of later Wyoming sightings have convinced Carol Thiesse, director of the Fremont County Pioneer Museum in Lander. “If Phillips wasn’t, he certainly knew a heck of a lot about Butch,” she said. NEVADA HISTORICAL SOCIETY, FILE/AP PHOTO

Butch autobiography ‘total horse pucky’ Rediscovered text resurrects debate over outlaw’s death in Bolivia Butch Cassidy historian Dan Buck says manuscript no match for bandit’s life as we know it Did Butch Cassidy, the notorious Old West outlaw who most historians believe perished in a 1908 shootout in Bolivia, actually survive that battle and live to old age, peacefully and anonymously, in Washington state? And did he pen an autobiography detailing his exploits while cleverly casting the book as biography under another name? A rare books collector says he has obtained a manuscript with new evidence that may give credence to that theory. The 200-page manuscript, Bandit Invincible: The Story of Butch Cassidy, which dates to 1934, is twice as

long as a previously known but unpublished novella of the same title by William T. Phillips, a machinist who died in Spokane in 1937. Utah book collector Brent Ashworth and Montana author Larry Pointer say the text contains the best evidence yet — with details only Cassidy could have known that “Bandit Invincible” was not biography but autobiography, and that Phillips himself was the legendary outlaw. Some descriptions fit details of Cassidy’s life too neatly to have come from anyone else, said Ashworth. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

“All of these people were bamboozled by this faker from Spokane? These weren’t hayseed, duped ignorant people. These were pillars of our community. And if they said something, you had to better take it seriously.” AUTHOR LARRY POINTER

Robbin’ and rustlin’ Historians more or less agree that Butch Cassidy was born Robert LeRoy Parker in 1866 in Utah, the oldest of 13 children in a Mormon family. He robbed his first bank in 1889, and fell in with cattle rustlers who hid out at The Hole in the Wall, a

refuge in northern Wyoming’s Johnson County. He left the area before cattle barons hunted down cattlerustlers in 1892. Cassidy then served a year and a half in a Wyoming prison for possessing three stolen horses. But for most of the next 20 years, his Wild Bunch gang held up banks and trains. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Hells Angels will seek revenge: Expert Shooting in Kelowna said to be part of gang warfare CHRIS STANFORD/THE CANADIAN PRESS

MATT KIELTYKA

@METRONEWS.CA METRO CANADA IN VANCOUVER

With the brazen day-time murder in Kelowna of Jonathan Bacon, British Columbians have got a vivid and disturbing glimpse of how the crime world operates. Kelowna RCMP confirmed yesterday the man killed in a targeted hit outside a hotel Sunday was an infamous Red Scorpion gang member, the oldest of three siblings all believed to be players in the B.C. Lower Mainland criminal scene. Three other people in a car with Bacon, 30, were injured: A male Hells Angels member now in critical condition and two

women expected to recover. One other victim who fled the scene after the shooting has yet to be located. Rob Gordon, the head of criminology at Simon Fras-

er University, said the high-profile incident should come as no surprise. “[Bacon] has created a lot of enemies and this is how gang members settle dispute. They don’t use lawyers or a courtroom, they do it on the street,” Gordon said. It could be a race between investigators and those looking for revenge. The fact the Hells Angels and their probable female associates were caught in the crossfire may increase the chance of retaliation. “They’re going to be very pissed off. Whether they give a hoot about Jonathan Bacon or not, you don’t go after their women.”

Tax rich: Buffett

Billionaire recommends any deficit-cutting plan leave rates for 99.7 per cent of taxpayers unchanged PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett is calling on the so-called “mega-rich” to pay more in taxes. Buffett said yesterday in a New York Times opinion piece that he would immediately raise rates on households with taxable income of more than $1 million US, and he would add an additional increase for those making $10 million US or more. “My friends and I have been coddled long enough

“It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice.” Buffett noted that the mega-rich pay income taxes at a rate of 15 per cent on most investment income but practically nothing in payroll taxes. The middle class, meanwhile, typically falls into the 15 per cent and 25 per cent income tax brackets and is hit with heavy payroll taxes. Buffett said he knows many of the mega-rich well, and most wouldn’t mind paying more in taxes, especially when so many fellow citizens are suffering. He also said he has yet to see anyone shy away from investments because of tax rates on potential gains, even when rates were much higher in the mid1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

I remember when 26 seemed impossibly old, the way 35 seems to me right now I guess, but now I’ve really started getting comfortable in my quarter-life status. The days of looking forward to agespecific birthdays as they relate to laws — driving, voting, gambling, drinking — are long gone as all of the milestones start to blend together. When people ask, “How old are you?” I often answer incorrectly, not because I’m embarrassed but because I really cannot remember — another sign of just how much I’ve settled into being a “20something” rather than a specific number. But it’s not just the physical changes that have me feeling like I’m getting on in years. All of my peers in the 25-to-30 age bracket seem to make a habit of complaining about just how ancient we’ve gotten. We whine sardonically about being “too old” for stuff that we still do on a regular basis. We’re too old to host keg parties, too old to live in a basement apartment, too old to wear five-inch heels, too old to be waking up in a stranger’s bed, too old to go back to school and so on. And herein lays the irony of mid-20s limbo: Old enough to know better but immature enough to do it anyway. We’re almost grownups, but we’re not quite there yet.

Cartoon by Michael de Adder Letters GET ON THE GO. A GO Tran-

sit on-time guarantee with refunds for GO train delays is the least that GO Transit can do to compensate customers and is something that is long overdue. This is something that many transit systems around the world already have, including London Underground in London, United Kingdom and MetroLink Trains in Los Angeles. As a regular GO Transit customer, and having been a regular customer of many transit systems, I strongly welcome this idea. Each time a GO train is delayed, someone is late for work, school or other engagements. Often, meetings will need to be postponed or cancelled affecting upwards of 20 people per passenger delayed. Multiply that by the number of passengers on the train and that shows how much transit delays affect our economy and our quality of life. As such, the cost of a single journey ticket to compensate for a train delay is insignificant compared to the actual cost of the harm caused by the delay itself. EDWARD CHOI MARKHAM

Mayor sends ex-wife a rock-solid gift A Quebec mayor could face criminal charges after he delivered an unwelcome birthday present to his exwife: A 20-tonne boulder, topped with a pink ribbon, dumped on her front lawn. Dany Lariviere, mayor of StTheodore-d’Acton, delivered the notso-happy birthday gift over the weekend to Isabelle Prevost — from whom he divorced last year after a

decade of marriage. The giant stone was spray-painted with the message, “Happy birthday, Isa.” Lariviere owns an excavation company. He said he used one of his own front-end loaders to transport the rock. He jokingly compared it to a giant diamond ring. He said his ex-wife always wanted one, and he described his “present” in one newspaper interview as 18-to-24 “carat-tonnes.” “I brought what we call a big rock to my ex-wife,” Lariviere later added in an interview with The Canadian Press. “I took a rock from one of my quarries and I brought it to her place with a little message and a nice ribbon, just like a real gift.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Studios take bite from the same apple Next year, a pair of live-action adventure flicks based on Snow White will come out in theatres just months apart. The first, still-unnamed Snow White movie is set for release March 16. That gives moviegoers two and a half months before Snow White and the Huntsman on June 1. Executives are confident that both projects can succeed, given their differences in stars, tone and plot.

This cinematic standoff pits a couple of “frenemy” studios against each other — newbie studio Relativity Media and its longtime distribution partner, Universal Pictures. Since 2005, Relativity had provided financial backing for most of Universal’s new movies in a deal that was to last through 2015. But Relativity has been eager to make money from distributing as well.

Charlize Theron is set to play an evil queen.

So in June, Relativity passed its co-financing deal with Universal to Relativity's financial backer,

Elliott Management. That paved the way for the two studios to compete head to head — Relativity with the unnamed movie and Universal with Huntsman. “It’s the nature of competition. It’s the nature of this business,” said Tucker Tooley, Relativity's president of worldwide production. Universal executives declined to comment. Executives argue that the two Snow White

movies are spaced far enough apart so that advertising one won’t inadvertently drive people to the other. Most movies make 95 per cent of their sales in the first four weeks. So there's plenty of time to get refreshed and go out again. “Ten weeks in the movie business is a lifetime,” said Huntsman producer Joe Roth. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

For British actor Jim Sturgess, filming the romantic drama One Day was like coming home again. “It was kind of cool,” said the Across the Universe star recently in New York. “I’ve done one other film in London but it was sort of nice to shoot on streets that I know and recognize and walk down in my everyday life,” he said. Set in England, Edinburgh and Paris, One Day is based on the international bestselling book by David Nicholls and features Sturgess and Anne Hathaway as two English chums whose love blossoms as they reunite on an anniversary date over 20 years. “I never made a film where the book is so much of a help,” insisted Sturgess, who contributes the involvement of Nicholls to the filming’s ease. “To make an adaptation (and) have the writer who wrote the book write the screenplay for the film; to have him around on set, to dive into the book and just read more thoroughly about this

scene that you’re in at that particular time was a massive help.” Published in more than 30 countries, One Day will undoubtedly have a dedicated following when the film hits theatres this Friday. For Sturgess, that also means there will be a lot of scrutinizing eyes watching his performance measure up to the character in the novel. As for Sturgess, he is likely hoping fans’ opin-

ions are slightly less critical than his own. “A lot of people read books and think of actors to help get an image of the character but I don’t really do that. I think of types of people so I had a type of person in my head and then suddenly I had to put my face in there,” laughed Sturgess. “(It was like) what are you casting me for? “This is all wrong,” he added.

Jim Sturgess on filming One Day (It was) probably the best filming experience I ever had,” said Sturgess. “Normally you go to a hot country and they put you in some massive costume that’s really uncomfortable to wear but for this, I literally had to wear a pair of swimming shorts, come out of the pool and go sunbathing.”

Jane Eyre Genre: Drama Director: Cary Fukunaga Stars: Mia Wasikowska 8811⁄2

Mia Wasikowska commands the title role for the 19th Jane Eyre, and like a distaff version of 007, she’s a heroine who shakes and stirs. Luminous in The Kids are All Right and Alice in Wonderland, Wasikowska makes drab seem rad in director Cary Fukunaga’s insightful rendering of Bronte’s gothic love story, a new classic version of this oft-told tale. She’s superbly matched with Michael Fassbender, the charming chameleon of

Hunger and Inglourious Basterds, who as Jane’s mysterious swain Edward Rochester is a figure at once menacing and vulnerable. Rounding out the impeccable cast are Judi Dench as Rochester’s loyal housekeeper Mrs. Fairfax, and Jamie Bell as the starched clergyman St. John Rivers. Fukunaga’s vision, in concert with screenwriter Moira Buffini (Tamara Drewe), strips the Bronte novel to its dark roots about the physical and emotional travails of young orphan Jane. The two main protagonists have been given

small but significant personality makeovers: Jane is less pious and Rochester is less verbose than in the novel. Wasikowska and Fassbender do such a superb job in their roles, and

match together so well, that no one need fear any disservice to Bronte’s everlasting intention: a love story where the woman is the equal to the man. PETER HOWELL

Parents of autistic children have long been told there's a roughly one in 10 chance a younger sibling may also develop the disorder, but a large international study suggests the actual risk is substantially higher. The study by the international Baby Siblings Research Consortium, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, estimates the overall risk at almost 19 per cent after studying 664 infant siblings with at least one older brother or sister with autism spectrum disorder. Study could deflate MS Zamboni theory

NATHAN DENETTE/THE CANADIAN PRESS

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in world A huge international study that has bolstered the genetic evidence that MS has its roots in an aberrant immune system has added to questions about the validity of a theory that obstructed neck veins are behind the progressive neurological disorder. It also raises questions about whether Ottawa and some provinces will follow through on plans to conduct patient trials of the so-called Zamboni procedure that unblocks those veins in a bid to alleviate symptoms and possibly halt progression of the disease. The genetics study, pub-

lished in this week’s issue of the journal Nature, identified 29 new genetic variants common in people with multiple sclerosis, compared to those without the disease, and confirmed 23 others previously linked to MS. Many of those genes are critical to how the immune system functions, and some of them have also been implicated in other auto-immune disorders, including Crohn’s disease, Type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The findings are sure to add to the controversy over the theory by Italian vascular specialist Dr. Pao-

lo Zamboni that narrowed neck veins — which he’s dubbed chronic cere-

brospinal venous insufficiency, or CCSVI — are a likely cause of MS. It’s estimated that thousands of Canadian patients have flocked to clinics outside Canada, paying thousands of dollars for the procedure — known as venous balloon angioplasty — to open up their veins. Dr. John Rioux of the University of Montreal, a member of the international consortium that conducted the study, said the research was aimed at locating genetic factors underlying MS, not to look at whether or not the Zamboni procedure works. That question can only be answered by well-designed clinical trials, he said. THE CANADIAN PRESS

MS What is it, how does it effect people and how many Canadians have it? Disease Multiple sclerosis is an often disabling disease, which occurs when the protective coating around nerve cells, called myelin, is attacked and progressively destroyed. Disease With an estimated 55,000 to 75,000 Canadians affected, Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the modern world.

Want to know if it’s a boy or girl? Test gives answer with accuracy but raises concerns HANDOUT/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Boy or girl? A simple blood test in mothers-to-be can answer that question with surprising accuracy at about seven weeks, a research analysis has found. Though not widely offered by North American doctors, gender-detecting blood tests have been sold online to consumers for the past few years. Their promises of early and accurate results prompted genetics researchers to take a closer look. They analyzed 57 published studies of gender testing done in rigorous research or academic settings — though not necessarily the same methods or conditions used by direct-to-consumer firms.

The authors say the results suggest blood tests like those studied could be a breakthrough for women at risk of having babies with certain diseases, who could avoid invasive procedures if they learned their fetus was a gender not affected by those illnesses.

But the study raises concerns about couples using such tests for gender selection and abortion. Couples who buy tests from marketers should be questioned about how they plan to use the results, the study authors said.

MAKE OTHERS FEEL GOOD CHARLES THE BUTLER ASKCHARLES THEBUTLER@ METRONEWS.CA FOR MORE, VISIT CHARLES MACPHERSON.COM

Dear Charles the Butler: Where is the line between being well mannered, and simply faking it? Just sayin’

Dear Just Sayin’: What a great question! A well-mannered person always puts themselves in someone else’s shoes first and never attempts to belittle others or make them

feel badly. One of the absolute golden rules of etiquette is to make others feel good. Someone who is polite and well mannered will always do their best to make others around them feel comfortable, no matter how awkward the situation. Someone who is false or disingenuous doesn’t worry about others’ feelings or making others feel comfortable in social situations. These people rely on what they see in the movies and on television for their cues to good manners and proper conduct. In practice, however, nothing could be further from the truth!

Gap years are a terrific experience if you build in money management skills. I’m a huge fan of gap years for high school graduates. Many parents worry that kids who take a break before going to college or university will come to love the freedom too much to hit the books again. I say, don’t fret. Why? Two words — minimum wage. It takes only a few months for your young adult to grasp the idea that bottom of the barrel income is the norm for those with only a high school diploma. It’s more important than ever before for young

Gap-year goals A good rule-of-thumb for managing gap-year earnings for not-so-young ones still living at home:

With savvy planning, taking a gap year before starting college or university can be a terrific way to gain money smarts.

adults to develop money management skills. The 2011 TD Canada Trust Student Finances survey discovered that 58 per cent of post-secondary students are anxious and stressed about their finances. A gap year is a great way to build financial skills, while setting money aside to reduce reliance on student loans and lines of credit during post-secondary studies at the same time.

Another benefit is that the money saved might mean less need for a parttime job during the school year. Work is a great learning experience but it can also detract from academics and campus life. This is what the bottom line looks like for a 35-hour week (one full-time or two part-time jobs) at or close to minimum wage for 50 weeks. I’ve used $10 an hour, though the provincial rates vary from $8.80 in

Alberta to $10.25 in Ontario. This amounts to $8,750 in savings; $4,375 for personal spending, and $4,375 for food and rent. With the youth unemployment rate ranging from nearly 15 per cent to over 20 per cent it can be difficult for young adults to find full-time work. Even so, help your gap year youngster develop a basic plan for whatever is earned and the savings will be appreciated down the road.

Think you’ll only be able to afford post-secondary when pigs fly? Don’t give up before tapping every resource available.

The majority of Canadian students are stressed or anxious about having enough money to pay for school, according to a recent TD Canada Trust Education and Finances Survey. “For university and college students living away from home, the annual cost of pursuing an undergraduate degree is approximately $20,000. If you’re a student and haven’t managed to put enough away, there are options available to you so you can focus on your studies without worrying about how you are going to pay for school,” says Raymond Chun, Senior Vice President of TD Canada Trust. Chun offers his advice to students on how to fund their post-secondary education. Explore your financial options

Investigate what scholarships, bursaries and loans you qualify for. Remember

to think outside the box and check if there are any local businesses or associations in your local community that offer help. For example, the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership rewards students who have shown leadership in their local community with up to $70,000 towards their post-secondary education. Get a student line of credit

A student line of credit from your bank can be a smart way to ensure you have access to money for things like books, tuition and rent at a lower interest rate than a loan or credit cards Set a budget

First list the money you have coming in such as money from scholarships, work, family and student loans. Then calculate your expenses like tuition fees, books and rent. Subtract your estimated expenses

from the money you have coming in. If you have a negative balance you need to rethink your spending or look for alternative financing options for school. Roll up your sleeves

Working part-time while you study will give you invaluable experience and help put more money in your pocket. Universities and colleges have career centres equipped with resources to help students find work. A quick Internet search will also unveil useful tips and advice for job interviews. Make your money work for you

You work hard to save money for school, so put your money to work for you. Set up a preauthorized transfer to a tax free savings account to take advantage of compounding interest and tax-free growth. NEWS CANADA

What happens to the workplace bully when he or she is fired for bullying? Sharon Lynn Rodrigues, a manager at a Dairy Queen in Castlegar, B.C., was a very competent employee. But she was also a bully. Rodrigues openly swore at work, referred to her staff as “stupid,” arrived late, took long breaks and did not hesitate to criticize other employees for their performance. When she was in a foul mood, she was miserable to be around, and co-workers ac-

cused her of being verbally abusive. Even the restaurant’s owner was afraid to confront her. Although Rodrigues saw many of the staff as friends, they did not see it that way. They found her difficult to work for and highly critical. Rodrigues’s management style eventually caught up to her when complaints mounted to the restaurant’s owner, Tim Kenna. One employee even inquired about a harassment claim. In response, Kenna resolved to deliver the message in the form of a probationary letter, warning Rodrigues that her behaviour was intolerable and that unless it improved, she would be fired. Kenna then left the store. In Kenna’s absence, Rodrigues launched a tirade against him, showing the letter to the staff and calling Kenna an idiot or a moron — or possibly worse. She even showed the letter

to a customer. Eventually, she just left. The situation was extremely awkward for the staff and one of them threatened not to return to the store until the problem was resolved. When Kenna learned what happened, he fired her. Out of a job of 16 years and without severance, Rodrigues sued. Amazingly, she was in luck. The legal doctrine of condonation provides that an employer cannot later rely on misconduct as grounds for discipline if no steps were taken to correct that behaviour when it first occurred. Here, Kenna made one crucial mistake. Although he was aware of the staff’s concerns, he stood by, never formally warning Rodrigues that her behaviour was unacceptable — until it was too late. Crosby won’t be rushed JAMIE SQUIRE/GETTY IMAGES

Penguins taking cautious approach as their captain continues his recovery from concussion Sidney Crosby’s summer vacation is almost over. Still, there’s no telling when the Pittsburgh Penguins star will return to work. General manager Ray Shero said yesterday the former MVP is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms and it’s too soon to know if Crosby will be available when the Penguins open camp next month. “There’s no expectation from me that he won’t be ready or he will be ready,” Shero said. Crosby hasn’t played in a game since Jan. 5, missing the rest of the regular season and Pittsburgh’s first-round playoff loss to Tampa Bay as he slowly recovered from a concussion. He said in April he would be back for training camp, but with about a month to go before the team reports, Shero wouldn’t guarantee No. 87 will be in uniform. The 24-year-old Crosby has spent the summer at home in Nova Scotia working out on his own. Shero doesn’t anticipate Crosby returning to Pittsburgh until a week before camp begins. He will undergo a thorough evaluation before he’s cleared to participate in full-contact drills. “He won’t be pushed to come back,” Shero said. Though Shero acknowledged Crosby has dealt with lingering symptoms “off and on” over the summer they have not pre-

It’s too soon to say when Sidney Crosby will be returning to action, the Penguins’ general manager said yesterday.

“I want him to feel good about himself. He’ll be back at some point to play hockey.” GENERAL MANAGER RAY SHERO

vented him from shutting down his workout program. “The good news is he continues to work out, he’s worked out hard during the summer,” Shero said. “We’ll see where we are come training camp.” Coach Dan Bylsma doesn’t think the team will need to treat Crosby with kid gloves whenever he’s cleared. Bylsma doesn’t anticipate holding Crosby out of the pre-season if his superstar has been OK’d by doctors. “I don’t think when Sidney Crosby is healthy and ready to go, he’s not going to shy away from contact, nor is he going to shy away from competition,” Bylsma said. “It would take quite a bit to keep him out of getting ready for the start of the regular season.” Crosby was in the midst of an MVP-type season before the injury, amassing 66 points (32 goals, 34 assists) in 41 games. He sustained hits in consecutive games in early January before being diagnosed with the concussion. He flirted with returning during the playoffs before a series of setbacks kept him off the ice. Rypien found dead Former Vancouver Canucks enforcer Rick Rypien was found dead by a family member yesterday inside his Coleman, Alta home. The news was confirmed by Angela Rypien, Rick Rypien’s cousin, on her Twitter account. Local RCMP officials say the death was sudden, but not suspicious.

Rypien, 27, signed a oneyear contract with the newly-established Winnipeg Jets on June 2. He missed most of last season after taking a leave of absence in November for personal reasons. That came on the heels of an October incident in which Rypien grabbed a fan at Minnesota’s Xcel Energy

Center, trying to pull him into the tunnel before being restrained by teammates and coaches. He was suspended for six games and struggled to regain a spot in the lineup afterwards. The Canucks didn’t publicize the reason for Rypien’s leave of absence. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
