Local Libyans rejoice over country’s future Gadhafi’s overthrow greeted as a dream come true by tight-knit community here
Ibrahim Momen compares the fall of Moammar Gadhafi’s compound to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Nothing could ever be the same again. “I am ecstatic,” said the 58-yearold Toronto-based financial adviser. He is part of a community group that has raised nearly $4 million from the 3,500 Libyans across Canada to send medical staff and supplies such as baby formu-
la to help civilians in their homeland. For Momen, watching his country enjoy a taste of the freedom that kept him in Canada since 1981 is an extraordinary feeling. “People are smiling,” he said. Tears poured down Adel Esayed’s face as the 47-year-old watched the breach of Gadhafi’s compound with his family. “I was always praying for God to extend my life to see this day. That
was my dream,” said the chair of engineering at Niagara College. Another prayer was answered soon after. On Wednesday, he had one of his first ever open, unguarded phone conversations with his family in Tripoli. Fear of the Gadhafi regime usually confined them to the basics. While many local Libyans celebrated, a 24-year-old IT worker who left his job in Ottawa to work
with Libyan rebels has reportedly been killed while storming a compound believed to be occupied by Moammar Gadhafi, his friend says. Haitham Alabadleh, of Ottawa, said his friend, Nader Ben Raween, had been shot and killed Tuesday by one of Gadhafi’s snipers. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE/ WITH FILES FROM METRO IN OTTAWA
