The next time a space mission returns samples of the moon, Mars or just about anything else in the galaxy, they could land in London for a look-see. At least University of Western Ontario researchers hope so. The university has received more than $2.1 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation. The money, announced Thursday, will benefit multiple projects, but the largest chunk of change, about $750,000, will go toward a $1.9 million piece of technology called a field emission electron microprobe. The equipment will allow researchers to examine even the tiniest samples in extreme detail so they can learn more about what lies beyond the Earth’s realm. Western has been running tests similar to the way analysis of topnotch samples would work. This week, two researchers travelled to Kamestastin Lake, Labrador,

where they are checking out a nearly 30-kilometre crater. By relaying information to a “mission control” centre at the university, the researchers are trying to learn more about what caused the dent — nearly identical to those on the moon — and what tools are best for learning more about it. Gordon (Oz) Osinski, the university’s industrial research chair, is leading the “moon mission” and will be one of the lead researchers using the new microprobe, which is expected to arrive in about a year.
