With hours to go until the strike deadline, Air Canada reached a tentative contract agreement with the union representing flight attendants yesterday afternoon. The Canadian Union of Public Employees said it was recommending Air Canada’s 6,800 flight attendants accept the deal, details of which won’t be made public until after a vote is held. A strike deadline was set for just after midnight this morning, though federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt had warned she would introduce back-to-work legislation. It was a turbulent situation ever since talks broke down on Monday. A number of rallies were held across the country yesterday, including at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Deborah Archur, a flight attendant for 29 years, said she was recently working on a flight in Munich that was delayed to the next day — her day off — and she wasn’t paid “a penny extra.” “Does anyone else go to work for free?” she asked. Otter Lake landfill could save millions ALY THOMSON

Last night Halifax Regional Council approved a recommendation that could save millions in operating costs at the Otter Lake landfill outside Halifax. Regional Council agreed to the terms of a tentative supplementary agreement with Mirror
N.S., the private firm that runs the landfill for the city. According to a staff report brought before council last night, starting in the 2012-13 fiscal year, there will be an annual cost reduction of an average $7.45 per tonne of waste, resulting in operating savings of approximately $1 million per
year over the remaining four years of the agreement with Mirror. Although one part of the report was approved unanimously last night, it was part two that generated discussion around the council table: Staff recommended bringing back a review of the existing waste resource strategy to identify opportunities to

The starting gun has sounded for the Halifax Regional Municipality’s 2012 mayoral race. Tom Martin, a retired police officer, officially announced his candidacy at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth yesterday. Flanked by two banners encouraging citizens to “Ask For More” — which appears to be his campaign’s main slogan — Martin said he believed the current administration has run its course. “The days of backroom details, absence of accountability and lack of vision must come to an end,” Martin told a group of reporters, campaign workers and supporters. “A municipal government that is not able to set priorities, that does not answer

The former Dartmouth YMCA site will remain a patch of grass for now, after Halifax regional council rejected a strategy that would allow the development of two apartment buildings. United Gulf Developments Ltd. proposed to build two 17-storey towers with 128 residential units on the Lake Banook site. But the proposal is not in keeping with the Municipal Planning Strategy, which says buildings in that area cannot be taller than 11 metres.

In 2003, United Gulf Developments submitted a proposal to build two 12-storey towers on the same site and was turned down. The purpose of the height limit is to prevent tall buildings from altering wind patterns that would negatively impact the Lake Banook canoe-racing course. A 2003 wind study concluded that a 12-storey building would not affect the wind on the course, but
councillors were skeptical. “It’s kind of a gamble as to whether the wind would or wouldn’t affect the race course, but once these buildings are up, there’s no going back, and we lose our world-class facility,” Deputy Mayor Jim Smith said. After a few councillors toyed with the idea of holding a public hearing, Coun. Bill Karsten said citizens already expressed their disdain for the project at a hearing in 2005. “Why would we want to go back to the public, and what — hope that they’ve changed their minds? The public spoke, and spoke clearly,” he said.

Councillors’ salaries frozen HRM councillors will not be getting a pay raise this year. The citizens’ commission presented a report to council last night recommending the remuneration formula remain the same. “The existing process
... now allows representatives to perform their roles in a manner which is remunerated and supported appropriately and to the best ends of public interest,” the report states. The report also says pay should not increase after council shrinks. The commission looked at other municipalities in the country as well as past HRM reports in order to reach its decision. METRO

The Nova Scotia government says a plan to make sure the shuttered NewPage paper mill is kept ready to be sold is nearing completion. Premier Darrell Dexter announced the plan more than a week ago as the money-losing mill won protection from its creditors in Nova Scotia Supreme Court. The province says NewPage has agreed to the government’s $14-million plan to keep the woodlands operation intact.

But the Tories dismissed the cost to taxpayers and the downward direction of crime trends. “We’re not governing on the basis of the latest statistics,” Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said in Brampton, Ont. “We’re governing on the basis of what’s right to better protect victims and law-abiding Canadians.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper has moved to make good on an election promise to bundle a series of proposed measures as part of his self-described “tough-on-crime” agenda.

Co. said yesterday it has agreed on an exclusive deal to build attractions based on James Cameron’s Avatar at its theme parks, starting with its Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, Fla. Construction is set to begin in 2013 and is expected to be finished about three years after that. The Avatar attraction is to be an immersive land spanning several acres and will cost less than half of the estimated $1 billion US it cost to expand Disney California Adventure Park, or around $400 million US. CEO Bob Iger made the announcement at a news conference yesterday. Cameron, who is working on the second and third instalments of the top-grossing film of all time, said the attractions would be a way to bring the lush world of Pandora to life, and would include animatronics and potential multimedia shows that use 3-D and holographic technology. “This is a pretty darned exciting project,” Cameron told reporters.

Under new rules approved by Turkey’s soccer association, only women and children under the age of 12 will be admitted to watch games — for free — involving teams which have
been sanctioned for unruly behaviour by their fans. Yesterday, women formed long lines around Fenerbahce’s Sukru Saracoglu stadium. The game kicked off with Fenerbahce and Manisaspor players hurling flowers at the spectators. The visiting team was greeted with applause, instead of the usual jeering. Fenerbahce was sanctioned by the association in July following trouble by fans who also attacked journalists for what they regarded as critical coverage of a match-fixing probe that involves the league champion. TV on phones means cash: BCE head Real-time programming of sports and TV shows on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets will provide new revenue from consumers and other wireless providers, BCE chief executive George Cope
said yesterday. “I think that's a brand new stream for wireless going forward,” Cope told a Goldman Sachs telecom conference in New York. BCE Inc. recently bought the CTV assets that it didn't already own, providing the telecom giant with content, for example, from BNN, CTV News Channel, TSN, and RDS. Consumers can sign up for the service and Bell can sell the content to other

Canada goes wireless Several million Canadians will have only cellphone service by the end of the year as they increasingly ditch their more expensive landline telephones, suggests a new study. About one in seven households — or two million in total — will have
just cellphones by the end of 2011, the Convergence Consulting Group said yesterday.

If you ever find yourself searching for the room where you’re scheduled to interview Taylor Lautner, look for the one with the duo of hulking security guards suspiciously eyeing every room service attendant or housekeeper that walks down the hall. That’s the place. It makes sense that Lautner would need to take certain precautions given that he’s been an international megastar since the age of 16, thanks to a little something called Twilight. Now at the ripe old age of 19, with his time as werewolf Jacob Black wrapped on the final installment of the series and set to come to an end in November 2012, Lautner is looking to grow from teen idol to leading man with his first solo project, Abduction, an action adventure helmed by John Singleton. As grateful as Lautner is for the success of the

Twilight franchise, one has to wonder if he isn’t more than a little excited to escape certain byproducts of the series’ success, like the hysterical screaming teens that swarm him wherever he goes. Asked if he ever grows weary of hearing shrieks, he shakes his head. “I love that noise,” he smiles. “We feed off of their energy. When we walk into a room, an auditorium or a red carpet and there’s thousands of fans screaming, it really gets us pumped. I remember the first time we ever heard it was at Comic Con
for Twilight and we were like, ‘Whoa! What is going on?’ But now we’re kind of used to it. We love it.” Leaving the Twilight series behind and embarking on more mature roles, Lautner has been hailed as “the next Tom Cruise,” a distinction he embraces with a “Gee, shucks, me?” attitude. “Tom Cruise has been my idol my entire life. Lautner have in common, besides those delightfully toothy grins, is a love of performing their own stunts. As an accomplished martial artist, Lautner is extremely physically ca-
pable and was thrilled to tackle the action sequences of Abduction, which included boxing, riding on the hood of a careening car and sliding down the sheer glass face of an escalator overhang. “When I hear about the stunts that my character is going to do, I want to do them myself,” Lautner beams. “Selfishly, they sound fun, but our goal with this movie was to make it seem as real and grounded as possible and it always helps when the real actors are doing the stunts.”

Jonah Hill is understandably a little hoarse when we meet up with him at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. The night before, he had been partying with the staff of the Harvard Lampoon in nearby Cambridge. “Oh my gosh, one of the best nights of my entire life,” he says. He gets a little starry eyed. “It was very inspirational because not only have a lot of the great comedy writers of our time and before passed through there and were a part of that organization, but it was inspirational and moving in that I always felt like, displaced a lot. Because there weren’t very many film people or comedy people really in my high school and college was kind of the same. I just
would have felt so at home there. I got the feeling that gosh, I just felt like I would have thrived in that environment.” Regardless of oppressive environments of his past, Hill is thriving. He is starring in his first dramatic role, playing opposite Brad Pitt in the film adaptation of Michael Lewis’ 2003 book, Moneyball. I know you must be sick of talking about your weight, but could you give me a CliffsNotes’ version?

The Coen Brothers focused an entire film around the Uncertainty Principle in Quantum Mechanics. In A Serious Man Prof. Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) teaches his classes the principle, but desperately wants to believe, despite the equation, that life makes sense. It’s not a movie about wave-particle duality and the DeBroglie hypothesis — it’s a very human story about a man searching for answers — but the math is crucial to the story. The same holds true for Moneyball, the new Brad Pitt movie opening this weekend. The story of a baseball team’s general manager who uses algorithms and computer-generated analysis called sabermetrics to draft his players isn’t strictly about the math, but the story wouldn’t be the same without it. I’d like to have a few DVDs — or whatever space technology they have — to show to my grandkids and go, ‘This is what I spent my life doing.’ Hopefully there’s three or four in there that are just worthy of having said I spent my life doing something... At what point did you know you wanted to try a drama?
I think I’ve always wanted to take this turn — it just had to be the right thing. … With all these talented people, I mean it was a no brainer. The truth is I feel very similar right now at this moment in my career
to how I did when Superbad was coming out, because Superbad was my introduction to people. I was this underdog, an unlikely star. I was not famous and I was the star of this big motion picture. I was saying ‘Hey, I’m Jonah. I’m in this movie. I’d like to do more of this and I hope you accept me.’ And I got really lucky and it was really popular. Why must my three keep out of sight?” The Da Vinci Code famously uses the Fibonacci sequence — 1 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 8 - 13 – 21 — as a key to unlock the movie’s mystery and Cube sees people trapped in a giant cube with mathematic problems as clues to their salvation. Winter is the real-life inspiration of the story of a bottlenose dolphin whose tail was lost in a crab trap. Rescued and rehabilitated by the folks at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the giant marine
mammal was equipped with a prosthetic tail which allows it to swim normally. “I’ve been around dolphins before but there is something different about her. I guess it’s because she’s been so ultra social-
ized, she’s been around so many different people since she was months old that maybe there is a different type of relationship she has with humans. I’m not sure. There is something you can feel. It’s pretty cool.”

Simon Cowell, the everconfident reality guru, is calling it now: The X Factor is going to be a huge hit. “You do it because you want to be number one. “You don’t enter something for the silver medal.” the TV producer/judge says of his expectations to not only meet the success of American Idol with his new venture, but surpass it.
“We’re going to try and make it the best show on TV.” There’s a lot on the line for the new talent competition, another singing contest Cowell has imported from Britain. The winner is guaranteed $5 million cash in addition to a recording contract and a Pepsi-sponsored commercial to run during the Super Bowl. “If I didn’t think that the talent was worth $5 million in America, I wouldn’t have made the
show in America,” the famously direct Brit says. Despite its pedigree, Cowell insists that this is not an Idol clone. The X Factor is open to both solo artists and groups, ages 12 and up. Contestants will be broken up into four categories: girls ages 12 and 30, boys ages 12 and 30, individuals over 30, and groups. Also, the judges panel — including Cowell, Idol mate Paula Abdul, former Pussycat Doll Nicole

After leaving the city of Hilo, and climbing 4,000 feet straight up, my first reaction after arriving at Kilauea was just how black and barren it is. Hundreds of miles of black rivers of lava flow frozen in time, flooding the landscape. Always one to bring back a memento or two, I decided to break myself off a few tiny pieces of black lava to bring home as a souvenir. I soon found out this is a very big no-no! A park guide soon rushed right over and insisted I empty my pockets of the new-found rubble. It seems ancient tradition dictates that taking any lava rocks away from the sacred volcano site will

In fact, there is a huge pile of returned lava rocks at the entrance of Volcano National Park put there by people who made the mistake of not heeding the warning! Despite the fact there is enough erupted material here to pave a road around the world three times over, those rocks stay put… forever. The Kilauea Volcano has been constantly erupting since 1983, and it really is a thrill to be right there in the thick of it. It’s also considered the most dangerous volcano in the U.S., so admittedly I was treading a bit gingerly as I approached the actual fire show. What followed was one

Heat oven to 220 C (425 F). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. In saucepan over medium-high, heat water, butter and salt until boiling. Add flour and stir vigorously with wooden spoon until mix comes away from sides of pan and forms a ball of dough, about 1 min. Transfer dough to bowl of electric mixer. Mix with paddle attachment 1 min. Add eggs, one at a time, waiting until fully incorporated before adding next. When all of the eggs are incorporated, mix in cheese.

Add tea leaves; steep 5 mins. Let cool slightly. Strain tea into blender; discard tea leaves. Add peach slices and honey. Blend until smooth. Add lemon rind and juice. Most college and university students start their summer job search in February. But actually, job searching much earlier — in September — can lead to summer employment. In the beginning of September 2010, I began looking for work-study positions at my university. The Federal Work-Study Program allows students like me to gain some extra cash while still putting school as their first priority. The program restricts students to a maximum of 12 working hours per week and usually runs from September to early March.
Tommy Tam knows first-hand what staying ahead of the pack can do for the career-minded student.
After sending my resumé and cover letter to a
few work-study positions, I was invited for an inter-
view and was granted the position of Research Assistant at the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (HPME). I truly enjoyed my time and my work with the professor and her team, but found myself searching for a summer job as April 2011 came around. To my surprise, my professor offered to hire me from May to August, as a summer student with her team. And even more amazing than that, I was accepted as a graduate student in that same department! Searching for jobs early on in September really paid off. Based on my experience, I would recommend career centres continue actively promoting and advertising the Federal Work-Study Program so that students can be informed of these types of
opportunities. The Federal WorkStudy Program has worked wonders for my career and I sincerely hope that it will do the same for others as well. I also hope that my fellow students learn how important it is to start your job search early, in September when companies are hiring students who are going to graduate that year. Students often start their job search in February or even later on in the year but I hope I can encourage students to start their job searches as early as possible.
What I learned Key take-aways from Tommy’s experience: Don’t leave job-searching to the last minute. If you want a job after graduation, then start applying when employers are hiring: in September. Networking is vital to landing any job — if employers can put a face to a name, you’ll stand out from the numerous resumés they receive every day.

Penguins star skating hard in training camp Still questionable for season opener Oct. 6 vs. Canucks Sidney Crosby was uncommonly upbeat a few minutes before his fourth training camp practice in as many days, regularly flashing smiles yesterday while fending off the playful kidding of his Pittsburgh Penguins teammates. The reason for Crosby’s cheerfulness seems evident. He appears to be getting closer to being cleared for contact — the biggest remaining hurdle as he recovers from a concussion that has sidelined the Penguins’ star for 8 1⁄2 months. “I’m pretty happy with the way they’ve gone so far,” Crosby said of the onice workouts. That was evident as he skated full speed through another all-out practice, this time with co-star Evgeni Malkin skating alongside him in the same group. Malkin is recovering from knee surgery. Crosby hasn’t backed off any drill, except those that require contact. But he hasn’t appeared reluctant to engage in contact, skating just as hard into the corners as any of his teammates during drills. Crosby clearly has progressed significantly from a few weeks ago when he was forced to cut back on conditioning work due to concussion-related side-effects that occurred once he reached the 90 per cent exertion rate. The Americans on the Calgary Stampeders are about to get a geography lesson on just how big Canada is from west to east. The Stampeders depart today for Moncton to prepare for Sunday’s Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Some players may be amazed to find out they can fly for seven hours and still be in the same country. Receiver Nik Lewis estimates 90 per cent of the Stampeders haven’t been further east than their annual road trip to Montreal. “It’s a long way, especially being from Texas where I’m two hours from Mexico,” he said. The iMiEV’s 49-kilowatt (66-horsepower) electric motor is located in the rear and directs its 145 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. The iMiEV’s top speed is 130 km/h, but driving at that velocity for any length of time will quickly sap its 330volt lithium-ion battery pack positioned beneath the passenger floor. Mitsubishi places the typical range at about 135 kilometres per charge, less than the 160 kilometres claimed by the Nissan Leaf and other electrics.
A 240-volt home charging system will top up the iMiEV in about six hours. Plug it into a regular 120-volt home outlet, however, and it’s an agonizingly-long 22.5 hours. That doesn’t leave much time in the day for driving. What will eventually be needed is a network of public charging stations that allow all electric vehicle owners to top up the batteries in the shortest possible time.
The iMiEV’s true purpose is abundantly clear: a short-haul urban commuter pod that can also tackle more mundane chores. It will easily accommodate four adults as long as they’re packing light. However with only the front seats in use, cargo capacity with the 50:50 rear seatbacks folded flat matches the space available in the larger Nissan Leaf.

Some issues have been reported with electronics, suspension and other systems by owners in online forums, though a Jeep mechanic should be able to check for and diagnose any of the Commander’s common problems. One such problem is a random engine stall-out situation that poses a safety risk. This could be caused by a transmission fluid filter or overly sensitive ignition switch. Ask the vehicle’s seller if they’ve ever experienced this sort of problem.

Taking a place above the Grand Cherokee in the Jeep brand’s product lineup, the Commander was available from 2006 to 2010 inclusive. Based on the Grand Cherokee, it was blockier looking, bigger, and boasted three rows of seating and room for seven occupants. Commander packed plenty of capability and traction on the road less travelled with the Quadra Drive II 4x4 system on board. Look for features like heated leather seats, navigation, a driver computer, parking sensors, power accessories, remote entry, a sunroof and plenty more.
Engine Look for a 3.7-litre V-6 with 210 horsepower, or a 4.7-litre V-8 with 235 horsepower until 2008, and 305 horsepower thereafter. Chrysler’s 5.7-litre HEMI V8 with 330 or 357 horsepower was also available, depending on the year. All models got an automatic transmission.

Don’t be surprised if there’s no spare when you look in the trunk. This year, more than 14 per cent of new models on sale in the United States came with liquid tire sealant and a portable electric air pump instead of a spare, a trend that is growing as automakers try to shed pounds and boost gas mileage. But there can be problems. While the sealant works well in most cases, you could be stuck on the shoulder if the hole that caused the flat is larger than a quarter of an inch, or if the puncture is on the side of the tire. However, General Motors Co., Hyundai Motor Co. and other automakers that use the pump-and-sealant
kits say they have many advantages, mainly the weight savings. The kits are about nine kilograms lighter than a temporary spare and the jack and other tools needed to put on the tire. Also, the inflator kits don’t take up as much room in the trunk, leaving more space for luggage or other cargo. GM, which has made inflators and sealant standard on all but five of its 22 U.S. car and crossover models, said the kits can fix 85 per cent of tire punctures. They’re easy to use, even for someone who might be afraid of changing a tire, and they’re safer because tires can be quickly refilled, getting the driver off the roadside and back in traffic faster than putting on a
spare, said Dave Cowger, GM’s tire engineering group manager. Hyundai says the inflator kits help avoid another problem: getting dirty while changing a tire yourself. All you do is attach some tubes and fill the tire with sealant and air. GM’s market research, Cowger said, shows that half of consumers would call for roadside assistance rather than using a spare. Still, for the 85 per cent of flats that the sealant can fix, there are 15 per cent that it can’t. That’s why Honda Motor Co. uses spares on all its 2011 models, spokesman Chuck Schifsky said. “An actual spare tire is the best backup system should a customer have a

All the big cheeses at big automotive companies are male. I think that’s why we always hear talk about who is – or who is gunning to be – the world’s No. 1 automaker.
I
t has something to do with sales and profits, yes, but a bit more to do with testosterone. The latest “king of the hill” rhetoric emanated from the Frankfurt Auto Show, which is in full swing this week. Volkswagen issued a statement at the show, detailing how they plan to spend 62.4 billion euros (about $84 billion) in the coming five years to boost its worldwide production. Currently the VW group, which includes VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands, ranks third in the
world motor vehicle production rankings. But it wants the No. 1 status, currently held by Toyota. Also ahead of VW at the moment, is No. 2 man, General Motors. Yes, that same General Motors that filed for bankruptcy protection back in 2009. “Top of the agenda for us are investments in environmentally-friendly, sustainable models and drives,” noted CEO Martin Winterkorn, in VW’s statement. One of those sustainable models sure to drive future volume is the VW Up, shown for the first time in production trim at the show in Frankfurt. The “mini” or “city” Up is a class smaller than Golf, so we probably won’t see it here in North America, which would be a shame, because it’s looks pretty good. And where VW is adding future production speaks volume about which world markets are expected to produce the most incremental sale growth in future years. Those markets would be China, Russia, etc., and North America and Europe not so much. I guess being No. 1 would be a good thing for

any automaker, but I sometimes wonder if people forget about the baggage that comes with being No. 1 at anything. It doesn’t take long before the cooler kids start looking the other way, or throw rocks at you when you’re not looking, because you are now the boring establishment, and had it coming. And you can forget about having any “underdog” support you once enjoyed. So go ahead, take your place at the top of the hill if you want to, just bring a helmet.
Behold ... The final resting place of your deceased vehicle Once considered scrap, endof-life cars are now considered an asset, dismantled and sold for the value of their parts and metal. It’s a process that involves both reuse and recycling once they go to their final resting place. Some 1.2 million vehicles come off the road in Canada every year, according to Steve Fletcher, managing director of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada. Good recyclers will get as much as they can from each one. “First, they’ll remove any parts that can be directly resold,” he says. “Engines, transmissions, mirrors, taillights, anything that doesn’t have to be reworked and can be directly reused.” Next, the recycler drains the 20 to 40 litres of fluid that each one may hold, including gasoline, antifreeze, transmission oil, brake fluid, washer fluid and engine oil. Fluids that are fresh enough are used in company vehicles, while

old or excess liquids are sold for recycling or reuse. “We’re paid six to eight cents a litre for oil,” Fletcher says; it will be re-refined into recycled oil or burned in asphalt furnaces. “We want the lead acid battery, not just for the environmental reasons, but because it’s worth $4 to $5 as a core that can be refurbished,” Fletcher says. Freon is extracted from the a/c system using special equipment, and is either sold or reused. Recyclers also check for mercury-filled switches, which were used in some older vehicles to activate the under-hood light, and which must be handled as toxic waste. “From here, the recyclers start to take it down by the metal,” Fletcher says. “That’s anything like the
copper in radiators, or aluminum in the wheels or engine.” What’s left is called the hulk and it’s flattened in a giant press, mainly to make it more convenient to ship. If the seats, trim or windshield weren’t good enough to reuse, they’re simply left in and pressed during the process. From there, the hulk is shipped to a facility that shreds it into fist-sized chunks. Magnets and other secondary recovery systems such as pressurized air are used to separate the metals, which are then sent for recycling, while foam, carpet and glass go to landfill. “On an average vehicle, you’ll get 75 per cent recycled as metal,” Fletcher says. “Once you factor in the parts we take out, such as tires and (reusable) parts, up to 83 per cent of the vehicle is recycled. You get about $500 to $600 for the metal in a flattened hulk for about $100 in time and effort, so a car has positive value.”
