With hours to go until the strike deadline, Air Canada reached a tentative contract agreement with the union representing flight attendants yesterday afternoon. The Canadian Union of Public Employees said it was recommending Air Canada’s 6,800 flight attendants accept the deal, details of which won’t be made public until after a vote is held. A strike deadline was set for just after midnight this morning, though federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt had warned she would introduce back-to-work legislation. Air Canada’s flight attendants were set to go on strike this morning, but the airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees reached a deal late yesterday afternoon.

Fitzpatrick said the company’s preference was to reach a deal with CUPE without the federal government stepping in with back-to-work legislation. Flight attendants in Halifax responded yesterday by chanting, “Negotiate, not legislate!”

“We want to have an opportunity to share what our plight is and what we’re dealing with,” said flight attendant Heidi Cohen. “As a Canadian, I believe we should have the right to protest, picket and have our voices heard if it comes to it.” WITH FILES FROM THE CANADIAN PRESS
