Mount Royal eyes massive rebuild of its residences Students. Providing more jobs, capacity and attractions among benefits of idea in early discussions
Mount Royal University (MRU) is exploring a potential multimillion-dollar residence redevelopment that could provide attractions for thousands while better utilizing space. MRU president David Docherty told Metro initial discussions have begun between his administration and
developers of a 3,200-residence site across Richardson Way Southwest at the old Currie Barracks site. The plan would be to tear down portions of the townhouse-style student residence on the east side of campus and replace it with apartments outfitted on the ground level with restaurants, shops and other businesses. Benefits would include amenities for both students and nearby residents, added capacity for on-campus living and far more part-time employment opportunities. “It’s about how we build a little community” Docherty said. “That’s actually really exciting.” No cost estimates were
available Wednesday as discussions are still considered preliminary, but the construction bill for the latest studentliving tower at SAIT Polytechnic came in at $53 million. Alex Campbell, an 18-yearold pursuing a music diploma at MRU, was intrigued by the idea. “My program’s really demanding — I don’t have time to take the bus to a job,” he said. “If there was something I could do here that would be way better.” The Currie Barracks development, being steered by Canada Lands Co., would also feature numerous amenities and the interest of working with the university seems to have peaked the interest of officials.
