A local designer says a U.S. design firm has been tapped by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) to create the logo for the city’s new CFL team expected to take the field at revamped Frank Clair Stadium in 2014. Randy Burgess, the Ottawa 67’s vice-president who represents OSEG, said that the group has “engaged the services of a design firm,” yet wouldn’t confirm if it is the rumoured Oregon-based Morrow Creative Group. The firm has done branding work for the NFL, NBA, Reebok, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Mavericks and Notre Dame. “We’ve contracted a highly respected firm that has done tremendous branding work for teams across North America in recent years,” he said, adding that city-wide contest for fans to name the team is now in the works. “We hope to launch it within the next couple of weeks,” he said. “It depends on the feedback that we get from the branding company.”

A few weeks ago Barrette unveiled a logo and team name that he hoped would be in the running. “I liked the Ottawa Highlanders,” said Barrette, adding he was just about to order a run of hats with his design stitched on them. “It’s always nice to have something that ties the name in with the city.” Barrette said he chose the name as a nod to the Cameron Highlanders who stormed the beaches of Normandy and were stationed at Lansdowne Park before joining the Allied forces in the Second World War. “It would have been fun for local companies to get a fair look,” he said. “We had developed branding logos for helmets and jerseys.”
