Three Cole Harbour residents have a lucky stroke of timing and two brave neighbours to thank for escaping a major house fire unharmed. Jillian Shipley said she saw smoke rising from the deck of a neighbour’s home just before 10 a.m. Thursday, and alerted her mother. “People around here, none of us neighbours are ever home at this time, and we were all home,” said the shaken woman as firefighters doused hotspots in the ruins of the house at 114 Maplewood Drive. As she watched flames consume the home’s back deck, Jillian called 911 while her mother, Janet, and another neighbour headed for the house. There were three people inside the house, all of whom were asleep at the time the fire broke out. Shipley and John Robicheau said they didn’t know whether anyone was home, but they didn’t leave anything to chance. “It was either somebody comes to the door, or I’m coming through it,” said Robicheau. “So I just banged on the winIrreplaceable

most of the day at the scene, but hadn’t determined a cause by 5 p.m. “They have not completed their investigation yet,” said McNulty, adding there are no indications the fire is suspicious.

Halifax woman. Missingpersons case turned over to major crime unit Police say the missing-persons case of a Halifax woman has been turned over to its major crime unit. Earlier this month, Tantallon RCMP say they received a report about the missing 34-year-old woman, Reita Louise Jordan, who was last seen on March 19 by friends in Halifax. She hasn’t been seen or heard from since. On Thursday, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Scott MacRae confirmed that HRM’s integrated major crime unit is now looking into the file. MacRae said the case is still being treated as a missing person, however. “We have a lot of questions still unanswered,” MacRae said. “We don’t want to speculate. Everybody wants to locate Ms. Jordan, but without a lot of questions being answered, major crime is going to take the file on.” MacRae said an area of concern is that Jordan hasn’t been active on any forms of social media since she went

The Halifax Mooseheads are a very hot ticket these days. Fans started lining up at the crack of dawn Thursday to snap up tickets for the upcoming series against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. “They’re the hottest ticket in town,” says J.P. Martin
of Halifax, who lined up at 8 a.m. inside the Halifax Metro Centre box office. “I just want to get seven tickets together.” More than 100 people were lined up at the Metro Centre box office for the 10 a.m. sale time. “A guy at the front says he was here at 5 a.m.,” says Craig Fleming of Halifax, who was looking for five lower-bowl tickets. “That’s a little too early for me.” Dreary-eyed or not, fans were confident this would not be their last chance to buy Mooseheads tickets during the playoffs.

Crowds have been growing throughout the playoffs for Halifax. In its first-round series against the Saint John Sea Dogs, Halifax averaged 9,335 fans. Against the Gatineau Olympiques in Round 2, the average crowd at the Metro Centre was 10,068.

The government would like to see a referendum held before the provincial portion of the HST could be added back into essentials like home energy, but both opposition parties say it’s a non-issue. Finance Minister Maureen MacDonald proposed the changes to the Financial Measures Act on Thursday in Province House, which would also make budget measures into law. “We’re very pleased with the fact the first thing our government did was to take the HST off electricity and home energy, and we believe that to change those exemptions Nova Scotians should have a say,”

MacDonald said to reporters. If passed, the act would ensure anyone trying to impose the tax hike to energy, children’s diapers, feminine hygiene products, first-time home purchases, or a few other things would have to go to the public. Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie said while he supports rebates it would be best if the province went one step further and provided referendums on any future increase to the HST.
“Only then would Nova Scotia taxpayers feel protected from political parties that promise one thing before the election, and then do the opposite,” he said. “Clearly the government is scrambling because they have no credibility on tax promises again.” Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil said he has no idea why the government would choose to protect these items through a referendum. “It’s irrelevant to me. We’re not talking about adding HST to any of those items, we’ve been talking about the issues that matter to Nova Scotians, like high power rates,” McNeil said. He added if the referendum was so important to the government, they should have proposed it in the first financial budget act. “What they did was all about politics, nothing more,” McNeil said. “It’s funny, they want (Nova Scotians) to have a say on issues that no one’s talking about.”

Police fear posters may spark vigilantism Rehtaeh Parsons case. Girl’s family call posters ‘disrespectful’ The RCMP say they’re concerned posters that have appeared on Halifax streets in support of four boys accused of sexually assaulting Rehtaeh Parsons could incite vigilante behaviour against the teens.
The posters urge people to support the boys, though it does not identify them. RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae said Thursday the posters don’t break any laws but police have received several complaints. He also said a Facebook page created in support of the four boys was recently taken down after the Mounties raised concerns that the identities of the boys could be made public.

HRSB. Experts brought in to review how board handled Parsons case The province says two Canadian experts have begun the review process into how the Halifax Regional School Board handled the events leading up to Rehtaeh Parsons’ death. On Thursday, the province announced Debra Pepler and Penny Milton of Ontario will begin the review immediately and will report their findings to minister Marilyn More. “We need to take a close and sensitive look at the programs, supports and policies we have in place now and figure out how to improve them,” More said in a press release. Pepler is a professor of psychology at York University and has been on the Ontario Minister of Education’s Safe Schools Action Team since 2004. Milton is former CEO of the Canadian Education Association and a former deputy minister of the Premier’s Advisory Council on Health, Wellbeing and Social Justice in Ontario. Milton said a plan hasn’t been developed yet but that she is coming to Halifax “fairly soon” to meet with the board as well as the IWK and Capital Health. “It is such an important

case, and sad as it is, it provides an opportunity for looking again at how we provide support,” Milton said by phone Thursday. She added she feels a real commitment to helping teens because they’re a “really important group.” “The world for young people today is a complex place,” Milton said. “Their lives are both enriched but also sometimes made more difficult by the access to modern ... technologies and the social behaviour that goes with it.” The panel has until June 14 to examine current policies and determine whether they were followed. Halifax, CBRM mayors meet ... finally It was billed as a “historic meeting” between the two largest urban regions in the province — the first meeting between the mayor of Halifax and his poor cousin, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM), since municipal amalgamation in 1995. CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke and HRM Mayor Mike Savage have kept in regular contact, discussing issues of interest to both municipalities. The IWK Health Centre is eying some much needed upgrades thanks to six-figure donation. CIBC announced on Thursday they are giving $250,000 to the IWK’s Women’s and Newborn Health Program. The money will go towards a new perioperative centre, which in-
cludes the pre-operating area, operating rooms and recovery area. Michelle LeDrew, director of Women’s and Newborn Health, says a new perioperative centre will focus on providing minimally invasive procedures. “That really allows women to have a better recovery time and get back to work and to their families quicker,” she said. They still need to secure more funding. “Any redevelopment in a health-care centre costs quite a bit of money,” LeDrew said. “This donation will certainly go towards it, but we still have a ways to go before we break ground and start our renovations.”

West, Texas, tends to its wounds as investigators await clearance to enter the blast zone Rescuers searched the smoking remnants in West, Texas, Thursday for survivors of a thunderous fertilizer-plant explosion, gingerly checking smashed houses and apartments for anyone still trapped in debris or bodies of the dead. Initial reports put the number of fatalities as high as 15, but later in the day, authorities backed away from any estimate and refused to elaborate. More than 160 people were hurt. A breathtaking band of destruction extended for blocks around the West Fertilizer Co. in the small community. The blast shook the ground with the strength of a small earthquake and

There was no indication the blast, which sent up a mushroom-shaped plume of smoke and left behind a crater, was anything other than an industrial accident, he said. The Wednesday-night explosion rained burning embers and debris down on terrified residents. Food bugs: Report shows campylobacter is on the rise
U.S. health officials are seeing more food poisonings caused by a bacteria commonly linked to raw milk and poultry. A study released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said campylobacter cases grew by 14 per cent over the last five years. The report was based on foodborne infections in 10 states, and found that overall, food poisonings held fairly steady in recent years. Don’t worry, the great cupcake crash of 2013 hasn’t hit Canada. Prominent bakers say our cupcake industry is better structured than its U.S. counterpart and will withstand the “cupcake crisis” going on south of the border. “Forget gold, the gourmetcupcake market is crashing,” The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) declared Wednesday, in an article that chronicled the rise and fall of the Crumbs Bake Shop Inc. stock price. At the peak of the U.S. cupcake boom in mid-2011, Crumbs traded at $13 a share, the Journal reported. With 67 cupcake shops, Crumbs locations have nearly doubled in the last two years. As of Wednesday, it was $1.70 after a precipitous drop of 34 per cent on Friday, in the wake of Crumbs’ announcement of falling sales. The analysts weighed in. The problems are not confined to Crumbs, but reflect sectorwide decline. “The novelty has worn off,” Kevin Burke, managing partner of investment banking firm Trinity Capital LLC, told WSJ. “It’s a short-term trend and we’re starting to see a real saturation,” Darren Tristano, executive vice-president at Technomic Inc., a Chicago research and consulting firm that specializes in the food industry, told WSJ. “Demand is flat. And quite frankly, people can bake cupcakes.” Taking a fresh approach

None of that fazes cupcake baker and owner of Toronto’s Dlish shop, Verge Manuel. “I think the U.S. market is different than what you see in Canada,” he said. “They’re suffering from over-saturation — chain upon chain, selling franchises to anyone who can put up the money.” Business is booming for Dlish, which recently opened up a second location in Toronto’s tony Yorkville neighbourhood, to complement its Queen West flagship cupcake shop. Manuel plans to open up a third location by the end of 2013. Despite getting many offers from people wanting to buy a Dlish franchise, Manuel has resisted that fast money to keep quality high by making sure any Dlish cupcake shop remains under his control. “You have to ask yourself, do you want to become the McDonald’s of cupcakes?” he said. “Our philosophy is freshly baked on-site cupcakes.” While Crumbs is seeking to expand to suburban malls, Canadian gourmet cupcake shops have been generally confined to upscale and gentrifying neighbourhoods, so the idea that cupcakes in general will go down-market when chains expand into malls is a real concern, he said. Jean Blacklock, owner of Prairie Girl Bakery, is planning to open her third shop this week. She already has a store in Toronto’s First Canadian Place and said malls are now attracting high-end retailers, and gourmet cupcakes belong there. Blacklock is very familiar with Crumbs and believes the company’s stock price is only a reflection of the expenses related to its expansion — not a comment on the cupcake industry as a whole. “I don’t think cupcakes ever were a trend,” she said. “They’re individual-sized cakes with icing that kids love because they get to pick their own and adults like because they can choose their preferred flavour and size. The combination of cake and icing has been around for decades and will be around for decades to come.”

As a 40-year-old woman, having marginally lived through a similar circumstance as Rehtaeh Parsons, I feel compelled to comment. When funding is cut in programs such as violence prevention and education, this is the result. Females are not being educated on how to protect, defend, and care for themselves. Males are not being educated about respect, relationships, and sexual health. As a youth, I was raped, I was drunk and I was a virgin. I can speak for many friends who experienced their first sexual encounter the same

We need to tell our girls that they are at risk when they drink. We need to tell them that their peers will take advantage of them, mock them, ostracize them, and, yes, even rape them. We need to teach them to stand up to what is ahead and that even their friends will hurt, crush, humiliate, and even rape them. I think we need to teach boys more about consent, responsibility, respect, and healthy sexual relationships. They need to be informed that a conversation should come before sex. Just another pretty film Oblivion. Tom Cruise’s new post-apocalyptic thriller is all style with very little substance Richard: Liz, this is one stylish movie. Every frame could be clipped and hung on the wall to garner oohs and ahhs from your house guests. Everything about it looks great. Morgan Freeman even wears a jaunty cape. But, I’m afraid the style took precedence over the substance. There is much to like here, but for me the story starts to go slightly out of orbit in the last hour and never quite becomes earthbound again.

What did you think? Liz: Richard, I agree. The sights from Jack and Vika’s fabulous tower in the sky ... the sweeping aerial scenes ... and don’t get me started on Jack’s secret mountain hideaway where he listens to Zeppelin on vinyl — the stunning visuals made me crave life in a post-apocalyptic world. The wild tale was fun, until it turned into a renegade Armageddon. I don’t know if Joseph Kosinski ran out of ideas as he wrote, but the last half feels a bit hastily cobbled together. RC: It does. I won’t give away any spoilers from the last half because the plot
thickens near the end, but it still manages to be kind of standard. Of course there is a scene of Cruise outrunning a giant fireball, and does everyone in post apocalyptic worlds listen to classic rock? But, having said that, I liked a lot of this. This is the kind of movie Tom Cruise was born to star in, the sort of thing that made him a superstar. What did you think of costar Olga Kurylenko? LB: Olga’s Bond Girl cred makes her the perfect counterpoint to Cruise’s action hero swagger — his comfort in these types of roles is palpable and you can just sit back and enjoy the ride. After
a few flops last year, Tom is back in my good books! RC: Nobody outruns a fireball quite like Cruise and I thought Riseborough brought a lot of humanity to a character who isn’t required to do much. A lot of the heavy lifting is left to Olga’s character, and while she’s beautiful, I’m afraid she has the range of an emoticon. She does much better work in To the Wonder. LB: Riseborough was great in her role — though her character’s refusal to question the status quo irked me. I like my ladies a little stronger. This is no Minority Report, but it’s a fun futuristic adventure fronted by Tom Cruise.

The intertitle comes as the story descends into the surreal — Dwayne Johnson grills human hands, Mark Wahlberg hacks up a body in Calvin Klein underwear and Anthony Mackie tangles a
chainsaw in human hair as he tries to decapitate a corpse. Aside from a few creative liberties, everything in Pain & Gain did happen in Miami in the mid-90s, when a couple of bumbling bodybuilders came up with a get-rich quick scheme that involved kidnapping, extortion and eventually murder. The real-life criminals — Daniel Lugo and Noel Doorbal — now sit on Florida’s death row. Bay pulled the story from a three-part crime series by Pete Collins that was published in the Miami New Times in 1999. The series outlines the missteps Lugo and Doorbal took, from trying to return a bloodied chainsaw to Home Depot, to failing to ensure one of their intended victims was actually dead — after they blew him up in a
car and then ran him over twice. It’s hard to deny the story is darkly funny, something seemingly pulled from the brain of Quentin Tarantino, with torture scenes in warehouses filled with sex toys. But the fact that it’s been turned into a crime comedy doesn’t sit well with some people — including one of the victims, Marc Schiller, who last week told the Huffington Post he was “appalled” at the film. But Bay was expecting mixed reactions to the movie. “I want people to be conflicted (when they see this film),” he says. “I want to show a lot of grey areas. When you return a chainsaw that you’re trying to cut a body up with — with hair in it — to Home Depot, to get a bigger chain-
saw, you don’t think that’s kind of funny? It’s not your cookie cutter movie.” It’s smart storytelling, according to Johnson, who plays a character that was a composite of two real men who played lesser roles in the crimes. “In the beginning you want to go on the journey with these guys; they’re kind of likeable, but at the end, all that gets thrown out the window and you’re happy and satisfied that they get punished,” he says. Bay hopes that the movie shows crime from the perspective of the criminal. “(Criminals) sometimes think they’re not doing something morally bad, or they think they deserve (what they’re stealing). You really go into a criminal’s mind (with this movie).”
Kevin Zegers tries out life in The Colony While filming The Colony, Kevin Zegers forged a friendship with renowned actor Laurence Fishburne over a rather unique common bond. “He started (in the film industry) when he was really young too, so without being pushy, he was very open to talk about how he dealt with it all,” said the one-time child star (now 28) during a recent interview. “I still hear from him all the time.” Zegers has of course matured from earlier days playing opposite a basketball-dunking dog in 1997’s Air Bud. In fact, the young talent is more recognized these days for his acclaimed work in such awardwinning films as Transamerica and his stint on TV’s Gossip
Girl. In The Colony however, Zegers has atypically turned to sci-fi action, playing opposite Fishburne in the apocalyptic thriller. Set during a futuristic ice age, Zegers leads an outpost struggling to survive against an onslaught of virus and a maniacal mob. “That was kind of the draw for me going into it,” said Zegers of the uncharacteristic role. “I just finished a six-month period drama thing and I kind of wanted some fun and (to) run around and kick some ass and this thing came. Series explores life after prison Rectify. The Sundance Channel show looks at what happens after you’re set free michael freidson

Thanks to advances in CSIlike technology, more convicts are being released from prison early, exonerated by DNA evidence. “I’m glad to be free,” they usually say, “and start my new life.” And then what? How do they ease back into a world that has left them behind? That’s the premise of the new Sundance Channel series Rectify, from a producer of Breaking Bad. Daniel Holden (Aden Young), convicted of raping and murdering his teenage girlfriend, is freed 19 years later, left in the care of his sister (Abigail Spencer) and worried mom (J. Smith Cameron). Meanwhile, a Senator fights to prove he’s guilty. Outside, Daniel is as trapped as in. The series was shot on location in Georgia — in a real house, among locals. Creator Ray McKinnon was inspired to do for the South what Scorsese did for New York. “I’m not from New York,” says the writer/director, best known as an actor on Deadwood and Sons of Anarchy, “but I knew something about ‘Mean Streets’ was authentic. And as someone from the South, I wanted to show the third dimension.” Every character — from Holden to his “hick” brotherin-law — is fully developed, far from a Deliverance caricature. “These are complex people.” The new Breaking Bad? Rectify is from a producer of Breaking Bad, but it’s a natural fit on the Sundance Channel — it’s languid, with dappled sunlight, long silences and a meditative quality. How will it be received, in an era of cliffhangers, hooks and binge-viewing? “There is a bit of a ‘did he do it, did he not do it,’ that’s an ongoing ‘what’s gonna happen?’ But ultimately, that’s not what the show is about. The show

is about private lives. And as a viewer, I become very empathic because I really care about everybody,” says Spencer. “And it’s timely,” she adds, mentioning the West Memphis Three case. “People are spending their lives in prison and then getting off because of DNA. So it’s foreign and yet it’s known.” Spencer was a natural fit for the sister Amantha — she grew up partly in the Redneck Riveria of northern Florida. Jail time McKinnon has spent some
time in prison — “Mostly drinking offenses. My 20s were … a selfdestructive time. Well, teens too.” — but nothing compared to Daniel. “The time I spent in a jail cell was very short, so it was a completely different experience. “I just remember — there’s something about the idea of having something that restrictive and how that, in a strange way, because of the lack of choices, gives you a lack of freedom that too many choices don’t. This show taps into that.”

The Canadian crooner has a new confidence about himself that comes through clearly on his album To Be Loved After the spectacular success of his Christmas album — eight times platinum in Canada, thrice in the U.S., a Juno award win for album of the year — Michael Bublé might have felt a certain pressure in trying to create a follow-up, the sleigh bells ringing in his ear turning gradually deafening. Instead, he says he went into To Be Loved — out Tuesday — feeling more blithely self-assured than he’d ever been in the past, committing to a breezy live-off-the-floor recording strategy and declining to polish away the resultant small blemishes in his production. He had the most fun he’s had recording an album, he says. And the principal reason he was so unfettered? He says that the news that his wife, Argentine model Luisana Lopilato, was expecting their first child made everything else seem a little less pressing. “I think the whole lack of trying (to top Christmas) came from me finding out I was having a baby — I think when that happened, it made me very brave,” Bublé said during a recent chat in Toronto. “The truth is, really, my

priorities just flip-flopped, and I went: ‘What’s important to me? My wife’s health. My baby’s health. My family. And then this record.’ If people love it, that’s awesome. If they don’t love it? You know what, I’ve done pretty well. “Not that I didn’t care, because of course I care, but I wasn’t insecure.” Bublé, of course, has been provided plenty of reasons for such validation within the industry. It’s clear he’s not immune from the influence of naysayers, whether imagined or not — when discussing the Junos, he calls it a “thankless job” because “no matter how good I do, or how funny it is, there will be people that just can’t stand me” — but the slights

seem to weigh less on Bublé now than they did at a more diffident stage of his development. For instance, when asked about the dearth of similarminded crooners operating on such a large scale, he disagrees and points out that for a long time he felt he was in close competition with other artists intent on cruising
down the same lane. “When I started, I remember looking at (manager) Bruce Allen and saying: ‘Bruce, man, we’re in trouble here. We’ve got (Harry) Connick, we’ve got Jamie Cullum, we’ve got Matt Dusk, we’ve got Peter Cincotti — I’m going to get buried here.’ He used to say, ‘You’ll be the last man standing, kid.’” So why has Bublé succeeded to an extent that others haven’t? “Maybe I’m not following everybody else. I’m not doing the same thing everybody else does. I’m not just writing a song and having the rapper rap a thing over it. There are panoramic aerial battles on Krypton, there are touching moments between young Clark Kent and both his biological and adoptive fathers, there are closeups of a fist pounding into ice, and there is lots and lots of big-budget flying.
“I wanted the movie to be a big movie-going experience, full of action, full of emotion and full of the biggest super hero in the world,” Snyder said Tuesday before giving the Las Vegas movie theatre convention CinemaCon a brief glimpse. “I wanted to give to the cinemas of the world a big, giant ‘movie’ movie.” The film follows in the modern tradition of the naturalistic superhero movies. It takes place in a gritty-looking, colour-drained world of greys, brown and icy blues. All the better to set off that red cape, perhaps. You can either bake this fish or barbecue it on a cedar plank. The planks are available at fish stores, supermarkets or lumberyards.
Preheat the oven to 425 F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking oil (or have ready a presoaked cedar plank and preheat the barbecue to high).

To make the glaze, combine the miso, orange juice, soy sauce, oil, sugar and orange peel in a small bowl.

As a James Bond aficionado, I was more than a bit disappointed that vodka didn’t make an official appearance in his blockbuster, Skyfall. Jonathan Drouin is itching for game action. After another Halifax Mooseheads practice at the Forum on Thursday, exactly a week since the Moose swept away Gatineau, it seemed the Herd’s star forward spoke for
everyone on the team. “The break’s been good,” said Drouin. “We’ve watched the game clips. I feel good and we’re all ready to go.” It wouldn’t take a sports psychologist to know that going into their semifinal series against the RouynNoranda Huskies on Saturday, the Herd has a lot more to give than last year’s team, which entered Round 3 coming off a remarkable but emotionally draining sevengame series against Quebec. The Mooseheads clawed their way back from a 0-3
series deficit. But, in doing so, had little left for their next opponent, the Rimouski Oceanic, who dropped Halifax in six games. “We were exhausted,” said Drouin. Not so this time around. Boasting a healthy lineup, the Mooseheads are rested and hungry as they countdown for Game 1. “There’re a few guys here that have been around for a while and we’re all excited to get going,” said third-year Mooseheads forward Luca Ciampini.
As impressive as his offensive game has been, notching nine points in eight playoff games, he’s as enthusiastic about putting his developing defensive game to the test. He’s quick to attribute much of his growth to head coach Dominique Ducharme, who has spent countless hours with the 19-year-old both on the ice and in the video room breaking down game tape. Now it’s go time. “I feel more confident this year,” said Ciampini. “We just want to get the job done.”

Throughout Ryan Falkenham’s difficult recovery the 17-year-old believed he would end up exactly where he is today. After being knocked out of a Jan. 31 road game with a concussion, it took the versatile Halifax Mooseheads forward more than two months to return to the Halifax Mooseheads lineup. Even after the infuriating highs and lows that go along with concussion recovery, he knew his time would come. “I just had a lot of faith,” said the Halifax native. “I knew, I hoped, we would have a long run and that’s what kept me motivated.” Since rejoining the Mooseheads on April 5, for Game 1 of their secondround series against Gatineau, his game and conditioning have progressed to the point where he feels like his old self again. In the end, he’s grateful for his health and has since put his ugly ordeal behind him. “I didn’t think I’d be out for as long as I was and it was hard watching the guys, especially when the playoffs started,” said Falkenham. “But I’m thankful I feel great. I’m mentally fresh and physically fresh, and ready to go.”
