NEW KIDS BLOCKED?

The New Kids On the Block, seen here performing at the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards, were given an extra day of rest before their Ottawa show after their trailer was held up at the Canadian border, causing Tuesday night’s concert to be postponed until Wednesday. Concert promoter Live Nation Ontario said in a statement that the production crew was delayed as it entered the country from the U.S. and it didn’t have enough time to set up for the concert. Live Nation said tickets purchased for Tuesday’s show would be honoured Wednesday at Scotiabank Place at 7:30 p.m. Jordan Knight tweeted, “Desperately needed this day off...phew!” after news started to spread about the postponement. Mayor Jim Watson says he was operating under the assumption Ontario Lottery and Gaming would consider two gambling facilities in Ottawa. That assumption was dashed with a May 2 letter from former OLG chair Paul Godfrey, the mayor’s office says, leading to Watson’s motion requesting the Rideau Carleton Raceway be named the only acceptable site for expanded gambling in the nation’s capital. “I thought there would be some willingness, in conversations that I had with Mr. Godfrey, that they would entertain a second, either a satellite or a standalone operation, for the slots at Rideau Raceway,” Watson told reporters Tuesday. Watson drew parallels to the two casino zones near Toronto, where Woodbine race-

track was treated as a separate entity to a proposed downtown casino. In Godfrey’s letter, he outlined for Watson how OLG drew up the zones, and reiterated satellite sites would not be considered. Godfrey’s ouster from OLG last month does not appear to have altered the gambling organization’s opinion. In an emailed response Tuesday, OLG spokesman Tony Bitonti reiterated satellite sites aren’t in the organization’s “modernization” mandate. The response was almost verbatim to the May 2 letter received by Watson’s office. Watson’s new-found desire to limit expanded gambling to the Albion Road racetrack drew the ire of Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk Tuesday, who sent an open letter to the press criticizing the motion. Melnyk, calling himself an “avid horseman,” said Watson’s motion essentially sole-sourced the casino’s location. “Clearly, I believe Senators Sports & Entertainment has the potential to play a significant role in the future of Ottawa’s casino,” Melnyk wrote. Council will debate Watson’s motion in July.
