Happy Valentine’s Day From Management & Staff

The development that could transform an entire block in downtown Halifax has been endorsed by the city’s Design Review Committee. The committee accepted a mostly positive report on 22nd Commerce Square Thursday night, even rejecting the only two conditions suggested by city staff. “This is a very complex proposal. I think it’s an iconic opportunity,” said committee member Louis Lemoine. The staff report recommended approval of the mixeduse development bordered by Duke, Hollis, George and Granville streets. The two conditions addressed proposed changes to the Champlain building at the corner of Duke and Hollis and the Bank of Commerce Building at George and Granville —

both heritage buildings. After a presentation from Lydon Lynch architect Eugene Pieczonka, the committee agreed the alterations represented a “reasonable change to improve (the buildings’) functional and economic viability,” as stated in HRM’s Design Manual. There was some debate over the bonus height of 85 metres, well above the HRM by Design maximum of 49 metres. Some committee members felt preserving the facades of four heritage buildings on the block constituted “demolition” of the buildings, therefore excluding the development from eligibility for bonus height. “The heritage space is also the inside of the building,” said committee chair Ramzi Kawar. “What you’re preserving is also the experience inside, not just outside.” Ultimately, the committee voted to allow the bonus height based on the public benefits offered by the developer. Its recommendation now goes to regional council for a final decision. RUTH DAVENPORT/METRO

A snowy weekend is in the forecast for Halifax and the rest of the province after what is expected to be a rainy end to the work week. Weather Network meteorologist Dayna Vettese says it looks like there will be about 10 centimetres of snow for the Halifax area starting at noon on Saturday and ending midmorning Sunday. “The further east and north you go in the province, the more snow you’ll get,” she said. “Anywhere from 10 to 15 centimetres.” Although the rain will stop Friday afternoon, the wind will carry into Saturday when it begins to snow, making it feel like there’s one storm ongoing for the entire weekend. “The first storm will come to end Friday night and the second round will begin around noon Saturday,” said Vettese. “The two storms are related, associated with the same energy.” Vettese advises people to keep drains clear of snow and bring in any loose objects that could blow around. “Shovel in bits and pieces, because it looks like a whole weekend duration with both storms coming one after the other.” Environment Canada has issued a weather statement saying a significant amount of snow and high winds are possible from the Saturday storm. A 46-year-old Halifax man who works with children appeared in provincial court Thursday on child pornography charges. Robert William Harris was

arrested after members of the integrated Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit searched a home in the 6100 block of Allan Street in Halifax on Thursday morning. Officers seized computer equipment at the house. Harris is charged with making available child pornography, accessing child pornography and possession of child pornography. Metro has learned Harris is a musical therapist who specializes in working with people, including children, who suffer from autism and mental and physical disabilities. Halifax Regional Police

spokesperson Const. Pierre Bourdages couldn’t confirm Harris’ employment, but noted that “in this case, this individual was brought in front of a judge so a judge can assess the circumstances surrounding this individual and his employment and determine what condition he should be put under.” Harris was kept in custody until a brief appearance in court Thursday. He kept his head down throughout the hearing, which lasted about two minutes. Bourdages couldn’t provide details on what led investigators to search the Allan Street

Love of baking and biking now a dream job for local On the web. Go to halifaxcookiecravings. com to place an order or read about Diana Manuel When Diana Manuel meets someone new, they usually give her a hug. It could be thanks to her wide smile, but it’s likely due to the boxes of cookies she delivers to Haligonians on her bright red bicycle throughout the year. “I’ve gotten a few hugs. It’s really funny, people I’ve never met, just saying ‘I feel like I should hug you,’” Manuel said Thursday as she took a break from biking around the peninsula during her busy Valentine’s week. “It’s really sweet.” Manuel started up Cookie Cravings in 2012 but decided to “take a leap” and begin working full-time for her business last November. After finishing university, Manuel wanted to find a job she loved and decided to combine her hobbies of bikes, baking and crafts. “That’s kind of everyone’s goal in life, to enjoy what they do for a living,” Manuel said. Baking all day is a fun part

of the job, Manuel said, but she especially likes making her own packaging with ribbons and stamps and doing deliveries because biking is relaxing and “everyone’s super happy and friendly” when she shows up at their door. If the roads are clear, Manuel said she can be spotted around town with her cookies in a small black trailer behind her bike, but she’ll still deliver on rainy days by hopping on the bus. The cookie “menu” on Manuel’s website shows about 15 or 16 types people can choose from, but she’s always open to trying something new if you have a special craving. Someone asked her to make a date-filled oatmeal cookie and she loved it so much she added it to the menu, Manuel said, but her current favourite is a lemon-shortbread cookie with raspberry buttercream filling. “Every time I make them, I eat a bunch myself,” Manuel laughed. “Hazards of the job, I eat a lot of cookie dough and baked cookies.” Manuel said she’s hoping to get a storefront within a couple years, and said business has been better than ever this winter. “There seems to be a lot of cookie lovers in Halifax, so it’s going pretty good,” Manuel said. Taylor said they came to court to have the trial switched to judge only, but then the guilty plea was issued by the accused. “We had heard that is what he was planning to do … we just didn’t know when it would be,” Taylor said. Park was found in a stairwell of the apartment at 117 Albro Lake Rd. in Dartmouth on June 1 after police responded to reports of a commotion in the building. An autopsy determined she was stabbed to death, and police say Hutchinson became a person of interest early on. He was arrested and charged two days later. Police said Park and Hutchinson were boyfriend and girlfriend, and referred to the murder as a domestic dispute. With the guilty plea, Hutchinson gets an automatic life in prison sentence. His parole eligibility, which can range from 10 to 25 years, will be determined at a sentencing hearing on March 20.

haley.ryan@metronews.ca

With one win under their belt, Canadian fans are already confident the men’s hockey team can repeat the golden performance from the Vancouver Olympics. Jonathan Moulins and Ben Tardiff watched Thursday’s game against Norway at Bubba Ray’s Sports Bar in Halifax. Both friends are liking Quoted

“It’s Olympics and it’s your country, and we’re doing pretty well, so I’m pumped.” Ben Tardiff, local fan

Canada’s chances although some sportscasters have been “downplaying” the team’s ability to take gold, Tardiff said. “There’s been a lot made out of maybe not having superior goaltending, but you have the best players in the world,” Tardiff said of Canada’s team. “You’re throwing wave after wave of MVP, 45-goalscorers at other teams so I think over time it’s going to be too much. “It’s going to be overwhelming. Knock on wood,” Tardiff added with a laugh as he rapped on the table. Moulins said he likes watching Olympic hockey because all the fans wear the same jersey and “everyone’s on board,” compared to the regular NHL rivalries. The stakes are also higher during the Olympics, Tardiff said, because there’s no room for error. “There’s no ‘Ah crap, the Leafs lost. Well okay … we’ll get that one back,’” Tardiff said.

“If you lose here, especially at a certain time, you’re done. It’s four more years.” Dagny Kavelaars, who

was also watching the game Thursday at Bubba Ray’s, said she’s “very proud” to be Canadian as the athletes have

been bringing home medal after medal. “They’ve been doing such a good job. It’s very exciting.”

The general manager of Bubba Ray’s Sports Bar said business has been “okay” so far during the Olympic games, but expects the crowds to really grow now that men’s hockey has started. On Thursday, the downtown Halifax bar was busy during the CanadaNorway game and Woody Menear said the first game is always exciting. “I think people want to see what the roster looks like,” Menear said. “See who the starting goalie is, who’s playing with who.” Haley Ryan/metro

Province Proposed faith-based to improve workplace law school under scrutiny safety No room for prejudice. University’s policy prohibiting same-sex intimacy comes under fire from Nova Scotia law community Lawyers and legal experts urged Nova Scotia’s bar society to deny accreditation to a proposed law school in British Columbia, arguing that the university’s policy that prohibits same-sex intimacy is discriminatory. More than two dozen people went before the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society on Thursday to make submissions on whether it should recognize degrees from Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C., a faith-based institution that wants to open a law school

in 2016. The majority strongly condemned the university’s prohibition of intimacy and marriages between same-sex couples, which is spelled out in its covenant that says “sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage between one man and one woman.” Elaine Craig, a faculty member at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, told the society panel that endorsing the institution would amount to sanctioning “blatant and explicit discrimination” and is not consistent with Charter values. Craig called on the panel to refuse to grant the accreditation, adding that when she came out as gay in her first year of law school at Dalhousie she was accepted and didn’t have to hide her sexual orientation.

Details

The panel expects to make a decision in April.

Archie Kaiser, a Halifax lawyer and law professor, opposed the accreditation and said it would not likely be tolerated if the restriction applied to other visible minorities. “I cannot see the difference when you think about the indivisibility of human rights between what TWU proposes and excluding women, Jews, atheists, people with disabilities and so on,” he told the six-member panel. “So I urge you to take decisive action to indicate that the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society does not welcome the proposed TWU law school.” the canadian press

The Nova Scotia legislature will return March 27 after its winter break. The house adjourned Dec. 12 as the Liberals held a short session after October’s election. The Liberals are expected to bring in their first budget this spring since defeating the NDP in the election.

The Nova Scotia government is adding 12 positions to its occupational health and safety division that it says will align with recommendations from the province’s former auditor general. In his fall report, Jacques Lapointe said Labour Department inspectors needed to do a better job of following up after identifying safety issues. Lapointe said only a small fraction of employers in Nova Scotia were given tickets for safety violations over a one-year period, despite missing deadlines. Labour Minister Kelly Regan says the 12 positions are in addition to five new safety inspectors announced last year and will focus on education, enforcement and compliance in the workplace. Another Danish zoo considers killing healthy giraffe Death threats sent to Copenhagen Zoo, which last weekend killed a healthy giraffe named Marius and fed it to lions in front of a young audience, have not deterred another Danish zoo from the same course of action. Jyllands Park Zoo is seeking a female giraffe that would replace one of its two males, a seven-year-old, also named Marius. The zoo claims the animal could not stay without threatening the breeding programme, and would be difficult to re-house. “If we are told we have to euthanize (the giraffe) we would of course do that,” Jyllands Park zookeeper Janni Løjtved Poulsen told Denmark’s TV2, adding that she was “completely behind” Copenhagen Zoo’s decision. At noon EST Thursday, the Olympics in Sochi changed — and some people are suggesting not for the better. That was when the Canadian men’s hockey team took to the ice against Norway and began their 11-day pursuit of the Olympic gold medal. So despite Patrick Chan beginning his chase for the elusive Canadian dream of winning the first men’s singles figure-skating title, most of the attention in homes, offices and bars was to watch Sidney Crosby, Drew Doughty and other NHLers.

“In terms of trying to support the other athletes ... it’s not necessarily a good thing.” Dr. Janice Forsyth, on the attention paid to the men’s Olympic hockey team.

Dr. Janice Forsyth, director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at Western University, said the non-NHL athletes need more support, at least for the 17 days of the Sochi Games. “This intensive focus that we have on hockey is understandable from a cultural point of view, but I think the media isn’t doing our athletes in our sport system any favours by not giving the other athletes their due attention,” Forsyth said. Forsyth said even though the women’s hockey coverage has improved, it has nowhere near the same interest as the men. “In Canada, there is just that intensive focus that we have on hockey — and it’s mostly around men’s hockey, let’s face it. It’s really challenging when you don’t see the other athletes getting as much attention,” she said. Forsyth said the focus on men’s hockey is a “detriment to the other sports.” There is more balanced coverage of all athletes in Quebec, she said. “We could actually learn a lesson from Quebec because they really do hold up their athletes as role models, and not just the hockey players,” she said. “They’ve got a really good funding base in the province, they’ve got good opportunities for sponsors — of course corporate sponsors step up to the plate — and media is very supportive of all of the athletes.”

Afghan women protest domestic violence law Article 26 limits justice for abused. 100 women march through Kabul Afghan women marched in Kabul on Thursday to protest violence against women and decry a new draft law that activists say will severely limit

justice for victims of domestic abuse. Afghanistan’s parliament recently passed a new criminal procedure code that would ban people from testifying against their own relatives. Legal experts say the law would curb prosecutions involving violence against women, where relatives are often the only witnesses. While the new legislation,

known as Article 26, does not specifically mention women or domestic violence, it bars a broad swath of “relatives” from acting as witnesses, which presents a problem in a country where women are often cloistered at home and the bulk of violence committed against them is either by or in front of family members. In practice, legal experts say, it would mean that a

woman cannot testify that her uncle raped her, that a mother who sees her daughter beaten by her father or brother cannot testify, that family members witnessing a young woman being forced into marriage by her father cannot be used in a prosecution, that a sister or brother who witnesses an honour killAfghan women in Kabul protest a new draft law that they say will limit ing cannot be questioned. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday wished Egypt’s military chief victory in the nation’s presidential vote, even though he has yet to announce his bid — a strong endorsement signalling Moscow’s desire to expand its military and other ties with a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. Putin appeared to be capitalizing on a growing move by Gulf nations — particularly Saudi Arabia — to move the Middle East off its traditional reliance on the United States. Egyptian Field Marshal Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s visit to

Moscow comes amid reports of a $2 billion Egyptian arms deal with Russia to be funded mainly by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which is part of Egypt’s shift to reduce reliance on the United States. “The United States’ influence is steadily waning in the region for several years,” said Gamal Abdel-Gawad, a political analyst at Cairo’s Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. “Traditional allies like the Saudis are becoming more and more suspicious, and U.S. credibility in the region is at stake.” Without naming the United States, the Kremlin criticized what it regards as U.S. interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Russia’s ties with the U.S. have been badly strained by disputes ranging from Syria’s civil war, to missile defence plans in Europe, to Moscow’s human rights record. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Canadian-style winter weather wallops U.S. East Coast, South Snow, ice all over. More than 750,000 homes and businesses without power

At least 18 dead

The latest storm to roll off nature’s assembly line this winter spread heavy snow and sleet along the U.S. Northeast corridor Thursday, while utility crews in the ice-encrusted South laboured to restore power to hundreds of thousands of shivering residents. The sloppy weather shuttered schools and businesses, grounded more than 6,000 flights on Thursday alone and created more back-breaking work for people along the East Coast, where shovelling has become a weekly chore — sometimes a twice-weekly one. “Snow has become a fourletter word,” said Tom McGar-

At least 18 deaths, most of them in traffic accidents, were blamed on the storm as it made its way across the South and up the coast. Among the victims was a pregnant woman who was struck and killed by a snowplow in New York City. Her baby was delivered in critical condition via cesarean section. The dead also included a man hit by a falling tree limb in North Carolina and a truck driver in Ashburn, Va., who was working to clear snowy roads and was hit by a dump truck.

Victims of the Lac-Mégantic train disaster want to sue Ottawa for allegedly failing to prevent a railway with the poorest safety record in North America from shipping highly explosive cargo through their town. Synopsis

• Richard: ••••• • Mark: ••••• Reel Guys

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN

It’s a testament to Colin Farrell’s charm that Winter’s Tale doesn’t completely fall flat. CONTRIBUTED

Lovers in a mystical time Winter’s Tale. The Reel Guys aren’t buying this Colin-Farrell-fronted story of love, time travel and a flying horse Richard: Mark, I am not a coldhearted man. I like love stories as much as anyone and, as a fan of Say Anything, almost well up whenever I hear Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes. But the sledgehammer romance of Winter’s Tale left me feeling bruised rather than buoyed. The mix of metaphysical romance, magic realism and demonic revenge is a strange stew that worked well in the book by Mark Helprin but seems to have lost something in the translation to the screen.

I feel the sight of Colin Farrell flying above New York on a winged Pegasus is best left in the mind’s eye. Mark: Richard, sometime in the ’80s, I was dating a girl who gave me a copy of the book, which she said was the “greatest novel of all time.” I read about a third of it, tossed it on the floor, and subsequently broke up with her. So obviously the story, with its magic/tragic, hocus/pocus view of romance isn’t for me. This is not a poorly made movie. It’s lovely to look at, has some fine acting, and has a lot of good dialogue mixed in with the bad. But Richard, there’s a magic horse in it. That horse will separate those who will be enthralled by the film from those who think it’s embarrassing hooey. Guess which group I fall into?

RC: I’m with you on the Pegasus and it’s a credit to the charm of Colin Farrell and Findlay that the romantic side of the tale comes alive at all. The first meeting between Peter and Beverly, over a cup of tea, is simple, effective and bristles with starry-eyed tension. More of that and less of the magic horse and I might have bought into the story. As it was I felt like I was strapped to a chair and force-fed all the Valentine’s Day episodes of Touched by an Angel. What did you make of Russell Crowe? He seemed like he was having fun with his demonic gangster routine, but did it work for this movie? MB: Yes, Crowe is one of the things in the movie that worked for me. It was the casting of his boss that was ridiculous, a preposterous cameo

that threw off the already precarious balance of the film. When he came onscreen, there was no turning back from its silliness. But even if I accept the movie on its own ridiculous terms, it still has a major problem. It’s like a two act play, but the two halves don’t cleave together. The second act, which happens in present day New York, feels rushed and arbitrary. At least the first act takes some time building characters and mood. What did you think of the female lead, Jessica Brown Finlay?

SCENE

Just in time for Valentine’s Day comes Winter’s Tale, the romantic time travel tale of Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a turn-of-the-last century burglar who comes across the love of his life while robbing a mansion he thought was empty. Beverly Penn (Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay), the beautifulbut-doomed daughter of a wealthy newspaper tycoon, is a precocious and philosophical young woman with just months to live. He wants to save her, but first he must save himself from evil crime lord Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), a brutal man who wants Lake dead. Then, in a twist suggested by the Brothers Grimm, he finds himself thrust 100 years into the future with only the faded memory of Beverly and a white guardian angel horse as company.

RC: She’s beautiful, a little frail and doesn’t get buried by the schmaltz. I thought she was nicely cast. MB: As was William Hurt. Always nice to see him working again.

Audience anticipation for the film:

Films to remind us life isn’t all about love and roses gotten too used to having an understanding, weak-willed paramour.” (His “pet name” for her appears to be “rat.”) It’s an insightful examination of mutual neediness.

About Last Night

Director. Shana Feste

Director. Steve Pink

Stars. Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde

Stars. Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall

Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde star in Endless Love, the story of a privileged girl and a charismatic boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart. Endless Love was inspired by the 1979 novel and 1981 film of the same name.

A modern reimagining of the 1986 romantic comedy starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, this contemporary version closely follows new love for two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world.

It’s Valentine’s Day, which doesn’t mean you need to torture yourself with a film affirming the power of love. Instead, snuggle up with one that speaks to the other extreme: that love can die. Gone With the Wind (1939) Deplorable ode to the South rising again or the artistic pinnacle of the Hollywood studio system? It’s both — and it’s also one of the great antiromances. Shot down by Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard), Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) instead toys with the affections of dashing ladies’ man Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). After 3 ¾ hours of being jerked around, he’s finally had enough. His weary kiss-off — “Frankly, Scarlett, I don’t give a damn” — has been replayed

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Oh, if we could erase the bad memories of a failed relationship, as Jim Carrey’s sad sack does in Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry’s manic break-up fantasy. Crippled after his relationship with free-spirit alkie Kate Winslet ends horribly, he finds that his solution only makes him long for the good times being zapped from his brain along with the bad. As Woody Allen concluded in Annie Hall, we repeatedly put ourselves through the often atrocious and upsetting process of dating because “we need the eggs.” If only we didn’t.

“Did you think I’d forgotten you?” asks Francis Underwood, addressing us viewers near the end of the second-season House of Cards debut. Then he roguishly adds, “Perhaps you hoped I had.” As if! Portrayed by series star Kevin Spacey, Underwood, the soon-to-be-sworn-in vicepresident, has a delicious way of conspiring with the audience in his Beltway depravity: A sly aside, a knowing roll of his eyes, a caustic pronouncement shared only with us. Though many of the firstseason batch of episodes are sparked with Underwood’s inour-face declarations, he keeps his own counsel until late in this second-season kickoff. “There is but one rule,” he reminds us in its final moments — “hunt or be hunted.” Happily for us, another 12 new episodes keep Underwood on the hunt as Netflix releases the full second season on its website Friday. Set in Washington in the current day, House of Cards is a loose reinvention of the 1990s British political thriller of the same name. It premiered a year ago and instantly established Netflix as a bold new contender in the world of original video, stealing thunder from such august cable networks as HBO and AMC while landing the first major Emmy nominations for a streaming video series. In short, this Cards game

was a game changer, forcing viewers (and the industry) to think outside the box: The box known as TV. Now Underwood, formerly a ranking U.S. congressman, has plotted his way into the vice presidency. But there’s no hint he’s satisfied with that lofty perch, if the first four hours made available for preview are any indication. Even as he faces growing threats that could lead to his downfall, he’s driven to climb higher, whatever it takes. “That’s the interesting thing about Francis: He has no allegiance, not even to a party,” says Spacey with an admiring laugh. Actually, Underwood does seem to have a precious pair of allegiances: To his own accumulation of power and to his wife, Claire, his loyal partner-incrime, played by Robin Wright. Last season, Underwood memorably stated that he loves his wife “more than a shark loves blood.” As he navigates the political world, and taps into the underworld, his collusion with Claire is one of the series’ most fascinating elements. “There is so much I don’t know about Francis, so much that I’m learning,” says Spacey, clearly pleased to be granted even more time to explore him: Netflix recently announced plans for a third season. “I’ve always thought that the profession closest to that of an actor is being a detective,” he goes on. “We are given clues by writers, sometimes clues they’re aware of and sometimes not. Then you lay them all out and try to make them come alive as a character who’s complex and surprising, maybe even to yourself.” the associated press

Netflix’s Internet video service is coming to the rescue of Star Wars fans left in limbo by the abrupt cancellation of The Clone Wars, an animated television series that embellishes the lore of the Jedi Order and Sith Lords. The sixth and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be shown exclusively to Netflix subscribers in the U.S. and Canada beginning March 7 as part of a licensing deal announced Thursday. The Los Gatos, Calif., company has already

pledged to spend about $3 billion this year on licensing video as it tries to expand its audience of 48 million worldwide subscribers. A significant chunk of that money is being earmarked for video that can only be seen on Netflix. One of the company’s most popular exclusives, the Emmy-award winning political drama House of Cards, returns for its second season on Friday. The resurrection of The Clone Wars will finish the story that was still unresolved when Time Warner Inc.’s Cartoon Network cancelled the series following the fifth season. Cartoon Network dropped the series after Time Warner rival Walt Disney Co. bought the Star Wars franchise as part of its 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm. Besides showing all 13

episodes of the sixth season, Netflix’s video-streaming service gained the exclusive rights to the director’s cut of previous seasons of The Clone Wars. Netflix is emerging as a popular alternative for TV series cancelled by broadcast and cable networks. The company revived the critically acclaimed comedy Arrested Development last year and plans to bring back the mystery The Killing. the associated press

• Disney has also struck an agreement with Netflix that allows the Internet video service to show the next wave of Star Wars movies shortly after they leave theatres. That deal begins in 2016.

Afternoon delight not so delightful for Farrell since jumping on the wagon Colin Farrell admits adjusting to a life of sobriety eight years ago was a bit daunting. “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to talk, full stop,” he tells Elle magazine. Drake has a little problem with Rolling Stone. The rapper has now sworn off magazine interviews after he claims Rolling Stone tossed his cover for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman for this month’s issue — and misquoted

him regarding his “mentor” Kanye West’s Yeezus” album. “There were some real questionable bars on there. Like that Swaghili line? Come on, man. Even Fabolous wouldn’t say some s— like that,” he supposedly said, which the mag then printed. Drake took to Twitter to recant the line. “I

never commented on Yeezus for my interview portion of Rolling Stone,” he wrote. “They also took my cover from me last minute and ran the issue.” Regarding the “took my cover” mention — that’s media speak for Drake being promised the cover in exchange for the interview. He was apparently then bumped by the editors for Hoffman. “I’m disgusted with that. RIP to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. All respect due. But the press is evil,” he wrote (it should be noted that all of Drake’s tweets have since been deleted). “I’m done doing interviews for magazines. I just want to give my music to the people. That’s the only way my message gets across accurately.” That, or Twitter.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

After Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter, today is the biggest wine buying day of the year. And it should be. Short of keys to a new car, there’s no better way to show your love than from the inside of a glass. It’s a holiday to toot the horn of sparkling wines. Not only do they pair well with

everything, they taste sublime all by their lonesome. Pink versions really speak to Valentine’s Day, with France’s Louis Bouillot “Perle d’Aurore” Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé ($19.99 - $28.29) a non-vintage, Burgundy-based fizzy that takes its production and grape

blend cues from the champagne region. Its soft, red berry flavours and delicate, crushed raspberry aromatics are a burst of summertime that will warm the winter-ravaged heart of your special someone. If you’re having a love affair with the Olympics

this month, crack a Molson Canadian Victory Bottle (625 ml, $4.20 - $4.95). It’s a limited edition inspired by the three litre versions given to Canadian athletes during the 2010 games in Vancouver. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.

Ehlers comes of age in win vs. Gatineau QMJHL. Soon-to-beadult forward snaps goalless stretch as Fucale earns milestone ANDREW RANKIN

andrew.rankin@metronews.ca

Nikolaj Ehlers perhaps couldn’t have picked a more appropriate day to rekindle his scoring touch than on Thursday, a day before his 18th birthday. Riding a four-game goalless stretch, the Halifax Mooseheads’ rookie and top goal scorer re-emerged in style against the Gatineau Olympiques, leading the Herd to a decisive 5-1 victory in front of 7,220 fans at the Metro Centre. But in his two-goal performance it was a matter of when, not if. “I was confident the whole time,” said Ehlers, who also picked up an assist. I knew it would come back to me.” Ehlers and Co. were the picture of offensive efficiency, registering just 18 shots. Despite that, the Herd managed to control the flow of the game while preventing Gatineau from establishing much momentum. After the visitors made it a two-goal game just past the midpoint of the middle frame, the Mooseheads responded in short order with a pair of tallies, entering the third period with a 5-1 lead. The Mooseheads did it without seven regulars in the lineup. They would lose two more key players to injury:

then to practice and then I’ll open some gifts when I get home,” he added with a smile. Meanwhile, Zach Fucale quietly set a new franchise record for games played by a goalie, with his 153rd regular season appearance between the pipes.

He was his solid self, making 25 saves for the victory. “A lot of it comes from having great teammates and a coaching staff that believes in you,” said Fucale. The Mooseheads improve to 36-18-0-3 and sit in third place in league standings. Matt Murphy, Luca Ciampini and Andrew Shewfelt rounded out the scoring for the Herd, while Adam Stevens responded for the Olympiques. The Mooseheads hit the road to take on the Bathurst Titan on Sunday.

Halifax’s Darrell Young signs on as new Sea Dogs GM Halifax’s Darrell Young is bringing his vast hockey portfolio to the Saint John Sea Dogs. The 55-year-old, who has 25 years of NHL scouting under his belt, signed on as the team’s new general manager on Thursday. It will be his second stint with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. From 2000-02, he served as the director of hockey operations for the Moncton Wildcats. Leaving behind his scouting role with the Vancouver Canucks, Young said he’s eager to get to work on bringing a championship to the Port City. “It’s going to be both fun and challenging,” said Young. “We all want to win a Memorial Cup, and I think it’s going to be rewarding to try to put the pieces in place and be a part of the team’s growth.” The former Dalhousie Tigers player and coach will officially start his new role in March. For the next couple of months, he’ll be on the road putting his scouting expertise to work. With scouting stints with the Washington Capitals, Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning — where he won a Stanley Cup in 2004 — Young said he knows what it takes to win. “I’ve been around people who are used to winning for the past 25 years,” he said. “It’s been rewarding.” ANDREW RANKIN/METRO

Canada shrugs off nerves Men’s hockey. Canucks overcome early jitters to dominate Norway Several minutes after Norway took the ice for its pre-game warm-up on Thursday, pucks still hadn’t arrived. Players skated or just stood around waiting. It turned out to be a preview of the second period, when Team Canada found its groove after a slow start and simply dominated the Norwegians on its way to a 3-1 victory in its opening game of the Olympic men’s hockey tournament. It was a stark contrast from Canada’s scoreless, sluggish first period, which players attributed to nerves more than any technical adjustments. Mentally, though, it was like a switch got flipped. “You’re playing your first game and everyone’s probably thinking about where they need to be and systems — probably a thousand things going through their minds,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “I think just once we settled in and realized how we play and how we need to play, we started to get some good results.” Canada, which got goals from Shea Weber and Jamie Benn during the second and one from Drew Doughty later to provide insurance, was tenuous at best and sloppy at worst early on. Being unsure of the big ice, of new teammates, of unfamiliar opponents, led to pucks hopping over sticks

When that was lacking, Norway was able to use tight, five-man units to frustrate the Canadians and keep them off the scoreboard. Thrill of chase inspires Chan Figure skating. Three-time world champ trails Japan’s ‘100-point phenom’ As the most dominant skater on the planet for the past three years, Patrick Chan has been peering over his shoulder, skating with a target on his back that had grown increasingly heavy. Canada’s three-time world champion goes into Friday’s long program at the Sochi Olympics in second place, looking at someone else’s back for a change — and it’s a position the Toronto skater doesn’t mind at all. “I like being in second, I like being in the chase. It’s exciting,” Chan said afterward — sounding more relaxed

post-competition than he has in a while. Yuzuru Hanyu — a 19-yearold Japanese phenom who lives and trains in Toronto — won the short program with a whopping world-record 101.45 points, making him the first man in history to break the 100-point barrier. The 23-year-old Chan, who’s gunning for Canada’s first-ever Olympic gold in men’s singles, scored 97.52, landing a beautiful quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination to open the program. But he slightly over-rotated a triple Axel that was so big it got away from him. Chan is well ahead of third-place Javier Fernandez of Spain (86.98), setting up virtually a two-man race Friday for gold. It was a rough night for Canada’s other two skaters.

Patrick Chan gestures as he waits for his results after the men’s short program competition in Sochi on Thursday. ivan sekretarev/the associated press

“Yuzuru has a target that he’s not used to having. And at the Olympics the target is double in size.” Canadian Olympian Patrick Chan explains why it will be difficult for his opponent to prevail.

Kevin Reynolds of Coquitlam, B.C., was 17th in the short program after falling twice. Liam Firus of North Vancouver, B.C., was 28th and didn’t qualify for the long program. Chan’s night, by comparison, wasn’t nearly so dramatic. He felt relieved he didn’t fall on his triple Axel, saying he could tell when he looked on the replay that he “had way more height than normal.” But Chan’s performance was otherwise flawless. Chan has been No. 1 in the world since winning the 2011 world championship in Moscow by a margin so wide it was like he was skating in a one-man field. But through two more world titles, the margin of victory had narrowed, and the pressure on the Canadian increased. And in December, the upstart Hanyu topped the Canadian at the Grand Prix Final ‑— Chan’s first loss against a full international field in three years. When asked if Hanyu will feel the weight of a target, Chan said: “Absolutely.”

Back injury forces Plushenko’s exit Evgeni Plushenko withdrew for medical reasons Thursday from the men’s figure skating competition at the Sochi Olympics. The four-time medallist fell on a triple Axel during warm-ups for the short program and immediately grabbed his back. Lone Filipino. A brush with greatness spurs Martinez Michael Christian Martinez used to study Canada’s Patrick Chan on YouTube. In Sochi, the Filipino teen got the real deal. The 17-year-old figure skater is the lone member of the Philippines Olympic team, and because he and Chan were the

first two skaters to arrive in Sochi, they found themselves alone together during several practice sessions. The Toronto skater befriended Martinez, gave him some pointers and even invited him to dinner. “It felt really great,” Mar-

tinez said, with a big grin. “I feel like a champion because I’m skating with Patrick Chan, and I feel like a world champion also.” Whatever instruction Chan provided certainly helped. On Thursday, Martinez finished 19th in the men’s short and

qualified for Friday’s long program. Martinez, the first Olympic figure skater from Southeast Asia, was born in Paranaque City and took up the sport after seeing people skating at a mall — one of just three rinks in the Philippines. the Canadian press

Nesbitt left looking up at the podium in gold medal defence Speedskating. Veteran athlete entered Sochi without any medals from World Cup season Christine Nesbitt finished far off the Olympic podium Thursday in a race she once dominated. It was a disappointing chapter in a frustrating season for the Canadian speedskater. The 26-year-old from London, Ont., finished ninth in the 1,000 metres at Adler Arena after winning Olympic gold in the distance four years ago. The opposing skater in Nesbitt’s pairing, China’s Zhang Hong, won gold for her country’s first long-track medal. Zhang’s time of one minute 14.02 seconds was almost seven-tenths quicker

than the field. Ireen Wust of the Netherlands was .67 seconds back and teammate Margot Boer .87 behind for silver and bronze respectively to bring the number of Dutch speedskating medals

to a dozen. It was more hope than expectation Nesbitt would stand on the podium again in Sochi, because she hadn’t won a medal this World Cup season. “It’s been such a crappy season, excuse my language, and every time I feel like I’m getting better something’s happened or I haven’t quite figured something out,” Nesbitt said. Post-2010, Nesbitt earned multiple World Cup titles and set a world record of 1:12.68 in January, 2012. So when she opened her season at home in November more than two seconds off that time, Nesbitt looked bewildered. “I don’t really want to talk about it,” Nesbitt said after the 1,000 metre. “I still have the 1,500 in a few days and the team pursuit coming up.”

Canadian men stumble in semifinal Francois Hamelin of Canada, left, crashes out in a men’s 5,000-metre short track speedskating relay semifinal at the Iceberg Skating Palace on Thursday in Sochi. The Canadian men won’t be defending their gold medal in the event after finishing fourth. Bernat Armangue/the associated press Medal count

Canada loses some momentum in Sochi Shut out of the medals Thursday, other countries caught and passed Canada at the

2014 Winter Games. It was the first day Canada didn’t win at least one medal. With just one in the last two days, the Canadian team stalled at 10 and was tied with Germany. Russia leapfrogged Canada

to 11, and the United States and the Netherlands jumped ahead to 12. Norway remained the frontrunner at 13. Canada’s goal is to top the overall medal count in Sochi after finishing third with 26 in 2010. tHE CANADIAN PRESS

Jeter delays in-depth talk about retirement MLB. Yankees legend delays press conference to discuss recent decision Derek Jeter pulled into the parking lot of the New York Yankees’ minor league complex on Thursday, walked out of his grey Mercedes-Benz and waved a hand holding a bottle of mineral water as about 50 fans applauded his mere arrival. After taking batting practice in an indoor cage and throwing on a field, he started to drive out of the parking lot about 90 minutes later — the car cleaned and polished, its silver hub caps shining. He

stopped and rolled down the driver’s side window to sign photographs, baseballs and other memorabilia for the first dozen people or so who had waited in line.

Already the most adored player on the baseball team with the highest profile, the New York Yankees captain figures to be the recipient of an ever-heightened level of adu-

lation during the next 7 1/2 months as he circumnavigates the major leagues in a farewell tour that could be called Pinstriped Parting 2 following Mariano Rivera’s emotional exit last year. Asked whether he felt good about the decision he announced Wednesday, Jeter responded: “I do.” But he didn’t want to get into an extended discussion. New York opens its big league spring training camp Friday, and position players report next week, when Jeter is likely to hold a news conference to discuss his decision. “I’ll address it when we get over there the first day of spring. It’s easier that way,” he said. The associated Press

Horoscopes

Aries

March 21 - April 20 Although today’s full moon takes place in your fellow Fire sign of Aries you could still get emotional and say things you later regret, so bite your tongue and keep your feelings to yourself — for now.

Taurus

April 21 - May 21 You like to aim high but sometimes you wonder if it’s worth the effort. Only you can decide but today is not a good time to make decisions concerning either your career or your family.

Gemini

May 22 - June 21 Today’s full moon makes minor disputes seem bigger than they actually are, but now that you know that you can make a conscious effort not to take what you see and hear seriously.

Cancer

June 22 - July 23 What looks confusing now will seem logical come the start of next week, so no matter what happens over the next two or three days, don’t let it worry you. That applies especially to money matters.

Leo

July 24 - Aug. 23 Try not to jump to conclusions today because either your grasp of the facts is wrong or you are looking at them through an emotional haze.

Virgo

Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 As today’s full moon occurs in the most sensitive area of your chart, things you could not usually care less about will worry you. Provided you don’t act on those worries everything will be fine.

Libra

Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 It may be annoying that someone is dragging their feet but don’t make an issue of it. The full moon means you just have to accept that not everyone thinks or moves or acts as fast as you.

Scorpio

Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 It seems you’re having second thoughts about a career move. You want to move up in the world, of course, but is this the route you should be taking? Think about it but don’t make any decisions until next week.

Sagittarius

Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 If you do things for others that they should be doing for themselves it won’t be long before they expect you to do it all. Let others know that they need to take more responsibility for themselves.

Capricorn

Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 It seems you’d rather go on making mistakes than admit you’re on the wrong track. Your fixity of purpose is often a great strength but not when you so obviously need to change direction.

Aquarius

Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Today’s full moon can either be a positive or a negative influence, depending on how you choose to react to people who annoy you. No matter what they do or say, just smile.

Pisces

Feb. 20 - March 20 What you have been doing is good but the way you have been doing it is bad and today’s full moon will in some way highlight that fact. SALLY BROMPTON
