Alberta’s former PC government said a drop in oil prices meant spending to schools, universities and hospitals had to be cut. The NDP delighted many Thursday by launching $624 million in new spending. While many are pleased, others are concerned about where the money will come from.

Ex-hacker on school hacks No matter what the Calgary Board of Education spends on upgrading cyber-security, clever students who are bored in class but motivated by mischief will find a way to digitally break in, says a young person who hacked into school servers as a teen. “They can upgrade security, but they will still have wayward kids wanting to access it … the kids that are too smart for their own good,” said ‘Sam.’ (Metro has agreed not to use the person’s real name.) Sam’s comments come a day after police announced charges against a 15-year-old for allegedly hacking CBE servers, accessing private corporate and personal information. Police Staff Sgt. Ryan Jepson said the method the teen used “would not require a high degree of sophistication.” Sam said the best way for the CBE to mitigate these types of hacks is to reach out to disaffected students by “fixing teaching styles, having more hands-on learning in schools, not making failure a huge ordeal in school, but making it a lesson to learn from.” In a response statement, the board said it “follows the program of studies as directed by Alberta Education” and “makes a priority of personalized learning for students.” LUCIE EDWARDSON/FOR METRO
