top of his list.” On Tuesday, the ministry said 101 of the current Alberta school projects would be delayed — 23 in Calgary alone, and 70 per cent of those are delayed a year or more. The government released a document outlining new projected opening dates, and has asked the auditor general to look into delays. David Eggen, Minister of Education, said it’s safe to say the majority of projects will still open within the dates on the document. “Certainly, they will not be delayed because of money, because I got the money secured, which, again, the former government failed to do,” he said, adding some delays could be due to unforeseen problems, such as finding wells on school building sites and other technical issues. Smith agreed that local issues could delay schools, but said all delays are not the responsibility of the local school divisions.
