Dispute

SU sues U of C Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary The Students’ Union at the University of Calgary is now suing administration over Mac Hall ownership squabbles. In September, the SU divulged two-year long discussions they’ve been having with the University in the ownership dispute. The union said it found evidence they owned 55 per cent of the building and have since been treated as tenants instead of halfshare owners of the student-run structure. In a September letter, University Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dru Marshall, wrote: “The 1999 License Occupation, Operation and Management Agreement (LOOMA) clearly refers to the University as the owner of Mac Hall.” The letter continued to state in an act of “good faith” the University would extend the agreement to May 1, 2016 on the condition that the students not sue the university for ownership. Levi Nilson, president of the SU, told Metro in September they had filed a statement of claim a year ago but not served it. Yesterday it was served, according to Nilson. The University, which has released a statement, now has 20 days to file a statement of defence. “The University of Calgary is extremely disappointed that the Students’ Union served the university with a lawsuit claiming ownership of Mac Hall on October 21, 2015,” read a statement from Dru Marshall.

Urban sprawl good for Calgary: Report planning

to be more decentralized. He noted that the mass transit system seems to be very successful now — especially with a downtown parking freeze — but wondered if it would be as useful if Calgary were to decentralize. “What happens if all the lines lead downtown, but the jobs move to the subcentres?” he asked during a presentation of his report on Thursday. Arnott was also critical of a lack of empirical data in many of the city’s reports, which he says are heavy on theory. Lacking that data, Arnott’s report contains some “back of the envelope” calculations on rent prices under several scenarios. He said a doubling of the population without outward growth could raise rents by 50 per cent by 2070, because housing rental growth rate would be almost stagnant. Rollin Stanley, general manager of planning development and assessment, took issue with many of Arnott’s claims. He said Arnott didn’t contact the city to request any of the

Richard Arnott published a critique on Calgary’s municipal planning on Thursday, saying he predicts higher rents and longer commute times if the city tries to contain its borders. Brodie Thomas/Metro

A California economist is warning Calgary could be headed for higher rents and longer commutes if it tries to contain urban sprawl, but city planners disagree with his report. Richard Arnott is a professor of economics at the University of California, Riverside and his report commissioned by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy looks at some of the potential problems with the city’s Municipal Development Plan and Calgary Transportation Plan, both adopted in 2009. Arnott said Calgary is very different from other American cities of similar size, which tend

data behind its municipal and transit plans. He pointed out that the city is already decentralizing by design, and that transit will carry workers both towards and away from the city centre on any given day. Stanley said increasing density will help keep the rental supply and demand in check. He added there’s plenty of undeveloped land within the city limits. Overall, he was skeptical of many assertions in the report, including some of the example cities mentioned. “Any time I see someone using Phoenix or Houston… I know I don’t want to emulate Phoenix or Houston,” said Stanley.

Skaters scorn park barriers Shaw Millennium Park

City and users still debating value of public compromise Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary Skateboarders who regularly use Shaw Millennium Park are on the fence about the city’s choice to install permanent gates. After public consultation last year over whether the city should allow users to ride ramps into the wee hours, the city struck a compromise. They promised to install fences to cordon off the skate park’s hidden areas, where “anti-social” behaviour was taking place, but pledged to keep the park open 24/7. But now that the gates are going up, some skaters are speak-

The beauty of Millennium is that it’s lit, it’s 24-hour.... There are almost no parks like it in Canada. Adding restrictions takes away from that freedom. Ron Scott ing out against them. “About three quarters of it’s installed right now,” said Todd Reichardt, manager of parks, centre division. “Despite our efforts to discourage (anti-social behavior) or to have people report it or encourage case members to phone the police when they see it, it still persists,” Reichardt said. Right now, the city regularly sends crews to clean up these areas, where people tend to leave trash, human waste and even used condoms. But for Ron Scott, these sheltered spots are the only opportunity he has to skateboard in the winter. “I have fond memories of bundling up in winter gear with

clean shoes in a backpack to head to that little bit of clean, flat pavement, which is now inaccessible due to those ugly things,” said Scott. He said the gates have also ruined the flow of the park, adding that “if it ain’t broke,” don’t fix it. Zev Klymochko, co-chair of the Calgary Association of Skateboard Enthusiasts, acknowledged the concerns with appearance, flow and winter use but said fences are a small price to pay for 24-hour access. “However, most of our members realize that the park will in fact be safer for everyone and potential for illegal activity will lessened,” reads an email from Klymochko.

The municipality promised to cordon off hidden areas where “anti-social” behaviour was taking place. Helen Pike/Metro

Calgary police have identified the two homicide victims found in a Coventry Hills home on Monday. Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus said the victims have been identified as Selamawit Alem, 54, and Julie Tran, 25, both of Calgary. He said they died of stab wounds, according to an official autopsy. Police said they were called to the 200 block of Coventry Close N.E. at about 10 a.m. on Monday. Inside, they discovered the bodies of two women. Andrus said this is not a random attack and that police have identified a person of interest, who is in police custody for an unrelated matter. “We believe based on our investigation that at least one of the victims and the attacker knew each other,” he said. Alem, a mental-health care provider, lived in the home with Tran and another man who she also cared for but who was not home at the time.

He had boarded an idle bus and was taken into custody. “We worked quite hard to make sure that there weren’t any gaps in the investigation,” said Brian Whitelaw, superintendent of public safety and enforcement

for Calgary Transit. “There were two witnesses and one officer who testified against him.” On Oct. 13 he was sentenced by a judge to 30 days in jail. Last April, Calgary Transit embarked on a publicity campaign to attempt to curb costly bus shelter vandalism, which had spiked in 2014, and see perpetrators charged — something they have had difficulties doing in the past with little evidence to go on.

“This is certainly the largest (sentencing) in recent memory,” said Whitelaw. “Since we did the vandalism awareness campaign we’ve had steady little successes along the way.” Bus shelter vandalism, including smashed shelters, can cost the city up to $400,000 a year. Since launching the campaign Whitelaw said awareness and reporting have gone up, giving them more leads when it comes to solving these crimes.

Oops, store does it again Cultural appropriation

Edmonton shop sells ‘Pocahottie’ costume Taryn Brandell For Metro

As Halloween approaches, seasonal stores are selling costumes — including one in particular that’s offensive to many in the indigenous community. The costume in question, the ‘Pocahottie,’ is being sold (indeed, staff said it’s currently sold out) at Halloween Alley in Edmonton, even after the store removed it last year. Last October, after unfavourable press coverage, Halloween Alley released a statement saying it acknowledged the costume was inappropriate and it was removing it from its stores.

“The Pocahottie costume has been identified as potentially offensive to aboriginal women and the aboriginal culture as a whole,” the store wrote in October 2014. “We also now recognize how insensitive the costume in question may come across as to the aboriginal community, and we have since removed the costume from our stores.” Metro called Halloween Alley several times but no one from the company returned those calls by press time. Halloween Alley is not the only seasonal store in Edmonton selling similar costumes. Metro reporters visited Party City and found costumes that may be offensive to indigenous people. The manager at the store declined comment. The situation is familiar to one Edmonton woman, who said she faces it every year in October. “This comes up pretty much every Halloween,” said Danielle

Bashir Gaashaan, 34, admitted to seconddegree murder and offering an indignity to a body earlier this week. Court heard Gaashaan and Jenna Cartwright of Red Deer were hanging out and doing cocaine on March 30, 2011, when he suspected she may have stolen or hidden some of the drug from him.

Paradis, an indigenous woman in Edmonton. Paradis, who also saw and photographed an advertisement for the Pocahottie at Halloween Alley, said the store’s apology last year has been nullified by it selling the costume again. “For them to respond that way and then to continue a year later, you have to ask how much they care about this.” Paradis said she’s tired of her culture being sold as “savage.” “Aboriginal people are being portrayed as mythical, historical creatures,” she said, even though they’re everyday members of society. with files from rhonda kronyk

Dave Dickenson

find out what this SOON-TO-BE HEAD Coach gets up to on and off the field, in our ongoing look at Players, coaches, staff and fans of CALGARY’S CFL club

The Coaching Life CANDICE WARD FOR METRO

Recent Hall of Fame inductee, offensive coordinator and assistant head coach to the Calgary Stampeders, Dave Dickenson is currently preparing to help lead the team towards another run at the Grey Cup as CFL playoffs are fast approaching. But before the season wraps and he is handed the reins as Stampeders head coach, Dickenson talks to Metro about his life, his legacy in the CFL and how it all balances with his commitment to family. Football Family For Dickenson, his family is not just his wife (Tammy) and kids (Cooper, 8, and Avery, 10) at home, but family extends to the playing field as well. As a coach for more than 70 players a year, Dickenson places great value on the relationships that are built with his team over the season. “I still in my mind feel young and I find the idea of being a mentor, you feel like you’re on different levels. I want the feeling that we’re all in it together,” said Dickenson. “I try and give them some guidance and I try and be a stand up guy. You have a chance to be a positive influence on them.” But it’s not only the impact that he makes on the team, but the way the team also impacts

his own character. “I see how they give back to their community. I want to be a part of something bigger than wins and losses, I want to be a part of an extended family,” he said. Legacy Once the 2015 CFL season is completed, Dickenson will take over the role as head coach for the Calgary Stampeders. After having his own lengthy and successful career as a player — and now a Hall of Famer — Dickenson hopes to leave his mark on the Stamps as a head coach. “The thing I’m most proud of is that I have been in Canada for 18-plus years and I have never had a losing record up here,” said Dickenson. “I just want to be known as a guy with high respect from both teammates and opponents, as a winner, and a guy that they can trust.” Off Season As the 2015 is close to concluding, Dickenson has already made plans to how he will spend some of his downtime this off season. Since he and his wife have two school-aged children, the Dickenson’s will wait until the holiday break before heading out on a cruise in the Caribbean.

While looking forward to spending valuable time with his family this off season, the cruise will mean that the Dickenson’s will be missing quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell’s New Year’s Eve wedding. “Otherwise I would be there,” he said. But before the family sets sail this Christmas, Dickenson has one more important item to check off: Seeing his parents in Montana. As for taking part in any hobbies over the off season, he said that being a dad is all he’s interested in tackling. “I’m gone enough, I would rather do stuff with them,” Dickenson said. “I would rather do the activities with my kids instead of going to watch them do activities.” Pre Game The pregame ritual or meal even extends to the coaches. Dickenson doesn’t do the common breakfast consisting of eggs and potatoes like many of the players, but coffee and chocolate instead. “I do stop and get a Timmies coffee on the way to the stadium,” said Dickenson. “My new vice is coffee and Tim Hortons coffee is the go-to.” Dickenson said he usually adds something with dark choc-

Metro | Calgary Calgary Transit is reminding passengers to think twice before jaywalking over train tracks after

two fatalities in two days. Last night during the evening rush hour, at around 4:30 EMS and police rushed to Chinook station where a man was struck at a pedestrian crossing. He died at the scene. At 8:30 a.m., Thursday morning, EMS responded to 36 Street and 26 Avenue NE for reports of a pedestrian who was hit by a CTrain. Delays in both cases backed up the system as Calgary Transit rushed shuttles to passengers

and ensured the scenes were contained for police. “It’s been a very tragic two days certainly on transit. With the two fatalities on the system we want to just reinforce some of our safety messages,” said Supt. Brian Whitelaw, coordinator of public safety and enforcement for Calgary Transit. Both of these incidents were ruled as accidental, according to Whitelaw. He added over the years about half of pedestrian

fatalities on the train line are self motivated. He said passengers should be careful not to run in and around the trains, even if they are late, because the next train is only moments away. He said it can take a train about 80 feet to come to a complete stop. Every year there are two or three fatalities on the transit system. Since the system opened there have 70 fatalities. This year’s fatality total is at three.

Province focuses on economic diversification Premier Rachel Notley has shuffled her cabinet and created a new department to focus on growing Alberta’s economy. Deron Bilous was moved Thursday from the Municipal Affairs portfolio to the new department of Economic Development and Trade. Danielle Larivee, a backbencher from Lesser Slave Lake, takes over from Bilous as the new minister of Municipal Affairs and for Service Alberta. “This is a unique effort for a unique time in Alberta’s economic story,” Notley said after a swearing-in at Government House. The NDP premier noted the province has not had a minister devoted specifically to economic growth and diversification for almost a decade. “Growth used to be taken for granted, but the shock of low oil prices has lain bare how vulnerable these old attitudes have made us,” she said. Bilous said the department will usher in policies to grow the economy on a large scale as well as assist business people and entrepreneurs with their ventures. “My ministry will provide a single storefront for all of government’s economic, trade and

Notley, asked if the diversification plan is to include direct public investment in private business ventures, said things will become clearer in Finance Minister Joe Ceci’s budget on Tuesday. “What I will say is that we agree that it is time for the government to very intentionally focus its efforts on diversification. We can’t have bits and pieces happening all over the place independent of each other. “We need to develop a plan and we need to be intentional on how we shepherd that plan.” Bilous’s new portfolio pulls in Notley’s international and intergovernmental relations duties, as well as the innovation side of Lori Sigurdson’s Advanced Education ministry, which she keeps. She will also remain as minister of jobs, training and labour. The Canadian Press

Why are we still distracted driving? Opinion

Addiction to social media behind need to check phones In defence of

Mike Morrison

Metro | Calgary The cellphone has changed the way we live. It’s our computer, camera, game system, oh and it’s also our phone. Yeah, that sound you hear, that’s ringing. Strange right? But the cellphone is also dangerous. No, I’m not talking about bad Tindr dates, I’m talking about distracted driving. And if the 27,000 distracted driving tickets issued annually in Alberta are any indication, we’re still not getting the non-text message. Here in Calgary, police have handed out 26,000 tickets alone since distracted driving laws were introduced in 2011. In fact, city police say that number is only going up.

With 26,000 tickets issued in Calgary alone, Metro columnist Mike Morrison is wondering why the behaviour is still so widespread. Metro file photo

So why are we doing it? And I say “we” because I would be lying if I said I didn’t do it. I tell myself I’m not the problem because I only do it at red lights, which yes, is still against the law.

Collectively we’ve convinced ourselves that checking our phones at red lights isn’t dangerous. Sort of in the same way we’ve convinced ourselves that everyone is a bad driver … except for us. The

fact of the matter is it really does only take a split second for lives to be changed forever. Even if you’re stopped at a red light. In fact, it’s really not that different than smoking,

Police responded to a call on Oct. 11, around 5:30 p.m., to a home on the 0-100 block of Ranchlands Bay NW for reports of a suspicious death. Mobile shop goes pop-up Willow Park Village

A unique business experience is taking Calgary’s mobile businesses off the streets and into a brick-and-mortar store. Kristin Poch who runs the mobile record shop Beatnik Bus, is ready to stop spinning her wheels for a few weeks and settle into a storefront to test the waters. “It’s always something that I thought could be a possibility,” Poch said. “The pop-up style for me, in terms of the bus, or this mobile retail style, was really to test things out … I think we see a lot of people trying to avoid brick and mortar these days just because the start-up costs and the overhead costs are significant.” In August, Western Securities Ltd. launched a project to see different pop-up shops occupy an empty retail space in Willow Park Village as a way to give new businesses a “leg up” and a way to bring new clientele to the retail space.

Series to showcase up-and-coming businesses

“They were looking for unique businesses that could diversify the traffic in there,” said Poch. “I’m kind of a popup style so it was just kind of a natural fit.” Past pop-ups in the space have included local juice purveyors Juice Because, artist BEX Vintage’s mid-century furniture pieces, and natural yoga clothing from Seed Yoga. Emily Couto, communications associate with Anstice Communications, and working with Western Securities, said the project started “by building on the concept of collaboration and the entrepreneurial spirit. “The series is intended to showcase some of Calgary’s top, up-and-coming local businesses while engaging a new generation.” Poch said she will be using the opportunity to see how her business works in a stagnant storefront. During her stay she will be keeping track of things such as foot traffic, which can give her an idea of what it would be like to work in a storefront instead of on her regular wheels. “Is this sustainable? What’s it like to be in a shop every day?” Poch said. “I’m not too sure what it will be like, this is just kind of a unique opportunity to test it out.”

Musician says he has the material for a new album Lisa Wilton

Metro | Calgary Tom Holliston has been playing solo shows for the past 15 years. But every once in a while he’ll get a gig that makes him re-evaluate his career choice. Take for instance a recent show booked in Kimberley, B.C. “I showed up and I was told I would have to set up the PA myself and there was only one microphone that worked, and the show had not been promoted at all,” recalled Holliston, who has also been a longtime member of The Hanson Brothers and Canadian prog-jazzpunk legends, Nomeansno. “I ended up not playing

Holliston, who plays at the Oak Tree Tavern in Kensington Friday night, said he’s become a more confident solo performer over the years, but also admits there are things about playing in that are irreplaceable. “There are certain people I love playing with and being with,” he said. “Sharing non-musical experiences can go a long way as well. It’s great to play and sing for 90 minutes and afterwards people are smiling instead of throwing punches.” The 55-year-old musician has released four albums, the latest of which is 2011’s Rotherhithe. Holliston said he has enough material for another record, but wants to make sure he can work with the right people going into the studio. “It’s vital for me to work and play with people who have a similar sensibility,” he said. “Usually, if not always, this means working with people who just want to play music and aren’t interested in career moves.” Holliston’s name has been well known in Canadian independent music circles since he replaced Nomeansno guitarist, Andy Kerr, in 1993 and gained a cult following in NMN’s hockeyobsessed side project, The Hanson Brothers. Metro | Calgary After a busy five-month competition, the PEAK Performance Project is starting to wind down this weekend. The contest, presented by Alberta Music and radio station 95.3 The PEAK, gives 12 artists from across the province five music business challenges to complete for a chance to win a grand prize of $100,953. One of the challenges is a live showcase, the last of which wraps up Friday at The Nite Owl. Bands must also organize a charity benefit and Calgary garage duo Miesha & The Spanks are giving a helping hand to one that’s close to their hearts — Women’s Centre of Calgary. The band is throwing a

brunch party with music from several local female musicians between noon and 5 p.m. at The Palomino Smokehouse on Saturday. Singer and guitarist Miesha Louie gives Metro the deets: Why did you choose the Women’s Centre as your charity? I wanted to do something in line with Girls Rock Camp, but it’s not a registered charity. We’re feminists and we like to support cool community things involving girls and women. So,

I was looking around and I noticed the Women’s Centre. The Women’s Centre does this Girl Power After-School Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays to mentor girls between the ages of 10 and 12. It promotes equality, self-determination and empowerment, and the Centre covers expenses such as transportation, snacks and supplies. The program really caught my eye. I went to the Women’s Centre and it’s really cool. It’s more than just counseling for women.

How are you raising funds for The Women’s Centre? The Palomino already has a Dixie Fried Brunch on Saturdays, where the deejays play country, soul and rock records. I thought it would be cool to join up with them and have a few bands play. There’s a small silent auction. (Calgary artist) Mandy Stobo has given me the goahead to put up some of her Star Wars series in the auction. Does the competition feel like a step forward for you? Definitely. Just being in the top 12 seems like a step up. The top 12 all got $5,000 grants, so that’s helped. And making this business plan, which is one of the challenges, has helped us put together a timeline and a plan of what we want to do. It brings back a sense of focus that you can sometimes lose when you’re just playing weekend shows in the same town. It’s easy to get into a routine and you forget about pushing for anything extra. This has been really pushing us.

On the way home, it can take up to 45 minutes. “I remember going through this before, when my daughter was in kindergarten, sometimes it used to take 45 minutes to get there, then all of a sudden we had to drive home quickly because she had to get to the washroom,” he said. “They’re little kids right? The kids shouldn’t be on the bus for 45 minutes at that age.” The Calgary Board of Education told Metro it has added 70 yellow school buses, for a total of 831. Staff are still finalizing the routes and work is expected to be complete by early next week. The CBE said some students may experience longer ride times as a result of the route changes. Haminder said of the 20 or so parents he talked with at his daughter’s stop, none had complained about the congregated bus stops this year. “I understand lots of parents had concerns with longer walk times to the bus stops, but the thing is, to fix that issue, it shouldn’t add too much to the commute for these kids.”

SAIT holds on to their position among top research colleges in Canada. In the annual Top 50 Research Colleges list by RE$EARCH Infosource Inc., SAIT ranked third and took the top spot in the list of Top 10 Research Colleges “partnering with companies.” “Collaboration and partnerships are cornerstones of applied research at SAIT,” said Dr. David Ross, president and CEO of SAIT, in

a press release Thursday. “Investments from both the federal and provincial governments allow SAIT students and instructors to engage with industry and turn research concepts into practical solutions — making ideas a reality.” SAIT has been in among the top five research colleges since the inaugural ranking in 2013 and continues to hold on to its standing. As part of the student experience at SAIT, around 250 learners are involved in research projects each year, which enables them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects in their respective industries.

‘Engulfments’ a real farm hazard Agriculture

Grieving son shares story, as seven have died this year When Dennis Becker saw his grandson sinking in a semitrailer loaded with grain, he did all he could to save him. But as he clawed through the pile of tiny kernels trying to free 14-year-old Layne Langridge, the 63-year-old man became trapped as well. Within minutes, both had suffocated on Becker’s farm near Burstall in southwestern Saskatchewan. Family members later realized, after the bodies were

RCMP have said Catie Bott, 13, and 11-year-old twins Dara and Jana were playing in a truck loaded with canola on their family’s farm near Withrow when they died Oct. 13. Their funeral is in Red Deer on Friday. Becker is sharing the story of his family’s tragedy now, he said, to bring awareness to the risks of handling grain on a farm. The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association has also called for more education on so-called “grain engulfments.” It says there have been a growing number of cases in recent years; a man in Ontario and a woman in Saskatchewan also died this year.

Becker’s son, Barry, says he and his family replay the Aug. 31 tragedy in their heads every day. And since last week, when three young sisters died the same way on their Alberta farm, the family has been especially devastated. Becker, Layne’s uncle, says he even feels a bit guilty. “We never talked about our incident and that these things do happen,” he told The Canadian Press from his home outside Calgary. “Grain is dangerous.... Currently the City of Calgary has a free fare zone between 7 Avenue stations from the Downtown West/ Kerby station to the City Hall station. “It would probably be an incentive,” said Jim Hughes,

who prepared the questionnaire for the Eau Claire Community Association. “I think the Green Line itself, by providing more transit to the city as a whole, would be a very positive development obviously, but for residents in a community like Eau Claire, we’re essentially living downtown right now. We’re not using transit to get to downtown, because we’re already there.”

MP wants open leadership race politics

Quest for top job should be based on ideas: Rempel Lucie Edwardson

Metro | Calgary

Calgary Nose Hill MP Michelle Rempel metro file photo

Calgary Nose Hill’s recently re-elected Conservative MP Michelle Rempel said it’s time the Conservative party have an open race for the leadership role. This comes after Rempel went on a Twitter rampage Wednesday evening to voice frustrations in a series of candid tweets about being a woman vying for party leadership. “There are all of these preconditions,” Rempel told Metro in an interview Thursday. “I think it should be an open leadership race more based

on ideas, it shouldn’t be about framing a person out one way or another.” Rempel said she thinks their leadership race shouldn’t be based on preconceived notions developed 48 hours after the federal election results. “It’s not so much about me, but more about how these are the sort of things that causes people to self de-select from a process like that,” she said. Although Rempel said the tweets weren’t entirely about her, but more about the current process, she did include some very personal narratives. “Rempel, forget those 43 CBC panels, and the 15 years of successful campaigns you’ve managed for the Party. Or the money you’ve raised,” read one tweet. “But but but but she’s so YOUNG and ONLY FOUR YEARS and SO BOSSY,” read another. Rempel said she was showing authenticity in her tweets and thought it was ironic how people accused her of being drunk for going “off script.”

There are all of these preconditions. Michelle Rempel

“You get so much criticism of people telling you that you’re too scripted and then when you’re not scripted it’s like ‘Wait you can’t do that,’” she said. Rempel said her main point is there should be a long leadership selection process in the party, with a lot of people running. As for being one of those people, she said she still isn’t sure. “I don’t know, it’s too early, we’re still picking election signs up,” she said. “But, what I don’t want to have happen is to have the race over before it starts. I don’t want good people, one gender or the other pulling themselves out because they’re being defined one way or another.”

Popular horror game gets revival 3D Modelling

Developer uses elements from original source to please fans Aaron Chatha

Metro | Calgary Calgary software developer Farhan Qureshi is learning horror — by recreating one of this year’s most popular horror video games on the computer. Earlier this year, horror video game fans lamented the removal of the game PT from the online Playstation 4 store. The game was incredibly popular, and was even developed with input from director Guillermo Del Toro. Developer Konami decided to pull the free download, meaning anyone who didn’t already have a copy was forever out of luck.

Owl Tree has no ‘hidden meaning’, creator says Jeremy Simes

For Metro | Calgary This tree has no leaves. If it did, it would’ve likely been a hazard for pedestrians along 13 Avenue SW, according to Tobias Luttmer, who was adding the final touches to his sculpture — Owl Tree — in late September. Luttmer sculpted the 17foot installation over five months. He said there’s no “hidden meaning” behind the privately-funded sculpture — it’s a tree, although wonky. “I don’t want something that’s normal looking,” he

see this a lot — this is rare.” Luttmer primarily used stainless steel to make the piece, burning it to produce its rugged exterior and welding it to twist its branches in irregular directions. The process of creating the work was the best part, Luttmer said. “I love the interaction it gives me,” he said. “I like the way the steel reacts to the heat, where you can almost get it to drip and bend it without much effort.” The steel aspect really impressed Dingman. “It just gives it this look that makes the building pop,” he said. “I think it’ll draw interest.” Luttmer said he hopes people just interact with the sculpture, whether they’re looking or feeling it. “I want people to just enjoy it,” he said. “It’s art that’s approachable, and I think people will really connect with that.”

Three Calgarians are facing a slew of charges following a drug bust estimated to net over $123,000 in illicit substances. Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said police charged the individuals after an investigation led them to a home on the 600 block of 21 Avenue NE, in the Winston Heights-Mountainview community, where they executed a search warrant Oct. 14, as a part of an ongoing investigation.

“Drugs were found inside the home and two suspects were taken into custody,” he said. “A third suspect was taken into custody at another location the same day.” Schiavetta said police returned to the home the following day to search a vehicle, where they found more drugs. Andrea Susan Wood, 30, Shane David Emond, 37 and Corey Adam Legault, 28, are now all facing charges includ-

ing possession, trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. “In total we seized $105,000 worth of marijuana, $9,100 worth of magic mushrooms, $4,100 worth of cannabis candy shapes, $3,600 worth of cocaine, $1,200 worth of hashish, 421 grams of an unknown brown liquid in syringes and 9.9 grams of an unknown brown powder,” said Schiavetta.

University of Calgary students are asking the school to explain and enforce their policy on pushy companies on campus after a distasteful few encounters with a marketing group. Vector Marketing has been on campus for about 14 years according to Sarah Pousette, vice president of operations and finance with the University of Calgary Students’ Union. The company has come under fire by students who aren’t happy with their aggressive tactics when it comes to reeling in students. The group employs students to sell cutlery. The university limits thirdparty commercial presence in academic spaces on campus. A statement provided to Metro read they generally don’t allow advertisers to promote their offerings on campus. “With the exception of some advertising on mini-boards in select washrooms, and some more expansive advertising in and around the gymnasiums,

Oval and kinesiology facilities,” read the statement. One student, who asked not to be named, said members of the group sometimes hand out clipboards during class, write on chalk boards and walk around on campus to recruit students. “I thought it was an emergency or he was trying to warn me of something.. but then he just started giving me his script,” said the student. Pousette said they have approached Vector about the incidents from a Reddit thread and reminded them that if they don’t comply with the union’s rules they won’t be welcomed back to MacHall. “After hearing about this we got in touch with Vector marketing and basically spoke to them about the rules that we have around it,” Pousette said. “They did apologize and say it won’t happen again.”

Woman dies after bus, minivan crash An Alberta woman who was a passenger in a minivan that police say rear-ended a school bus has died. Lethbridge RCMP say the bus was stopped on Highway 25 near Lethbridge on Monday afternoon to let a student off when a brown minivan hit the bus from behind. Police say the driver told them the school bus had its stop-sign arm out and warning lights activated at the time. Mounties say students and

school bus driver were shaken up but not injured, and that a woman in the minivan was taken to hospital in Lethbridge with non-life threatening injuries. RCMP say the woman’s condition changed for the worse and she was taken to a Calgary hospital where she died Wednesday night. Police say the woman was in her mid-60’s and from the Picture Butte area. ‘It’s sadness, but it’s also pride’ Ottawa shooting

Thousands mark 1-year anniversary Joe Lofaro

Metro | Ottawa Marcus Cirillo, son of fallen soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, had a front row seat to an emotional show of sympathy and honour on Thursday as thousands of people gathered to mark the one-year an-

niversary of the Ottawa shooting. The six-year-old boy sat with his family just a few feet away from where his father was fatally gunned down from behind by a shooter on Oct. 22, 2014, who then stormed into Parliament Hill’s Centre Block. The event also honoured the life of warrant officer Patrice Vincent, who was purposefully run over by a vehicle two days earlier in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. It was a sombre ceremony, marked by several moments of silent reflection that was only pierced by the sounds of march-

CPl. nathan cirillo Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, was shot fatally from behind by a lone gunman, who then raced into the House of Commons before he, too, was gunned down. Cirillo, a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment, left a young son, Marcus Ciril-

ing orders of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, a 21-gun salute, and a CF-18 flyby. Thousands of people lined the streets surrounding the National War Memorial hoping to get a glimpse of the ceremony and to hear Gov. Gen. David Johnston speak. “Last year many people said Canada would never be the same. But I don’t think Canada changed forever. Canadians are a caring and courageous people. This is who we are and that will not change,” said Johnston. Yvan and Angela Barbe, veterans with the Canadian Armed Forces, were among the dozens of people who laid a bouquet of flowers at the memorial. Their son, Canadian Air Force aviator Remi Barbe, was the one who handed Trudeau and Harper the wreath Thursday. It was “amazing” to see such a large crowd to pay their respects, but he said he now has mixed emotions when he walks by the War Memorial. “It’s sadness, but it’s also pride,” he said.

Trudeau note worth $12K eBay

Document written in 2013 during run for leadership A note that referenced the past while predicting the future has been sold for more than $12,000. The document is a 2013 note

in which then-Liberal leadership contender Justin Trudeau predicted he would succeed Stephen Harper as Canada’s prime minister. Michael Kydd was on a Porter Airlines flight on March 20 that year and passed a note to Trudeau, whom he had never met, asking “Can you really beat Harper?” Trudeau responded with a quote from his late father — former prime minister Pierre El-

Court hears shots that killed Yatim The sound of nine loud gunshots shattered the quiet of a Toronto courtroom Thursday as a jury heard for the first time audio of the final moments of Sammy Yatim’s life. The 18-year-old was holding a small knife on an empty streetcar when, after a 50-second confrontation with police, he was shot several times. Const. James Forcillo has pleaded not guilty to seconddegree murder and attempted murder in Yatim’s shooting death. Crown prosecutors have said they plan to prove that Forcillo’s actions during the July 2013 incident were neither necessary nor reasonable. Forcillo’s lawyer has said he will be arguing that the officer’s actions were justified and carried out in self-defence. In court on Thursday, two cellphone videos taken by civilians, an audio recording from a microphone inside the streetcar, and a recording of police radio communications, combined with surveillance videos played earlier this week, all stitched together a narrative of what happened on the night of the shooting. Yatim had consumed the drug ecstasy before he boarded the streetcar, the trial has been told.

Later Thursday, while crossexamining the Special Investigations Unit officer who introduced the videos and audio to the court, Forcillo’s lawyer suggested the knife Yatim was holding at the time of the shooting was a deadly weapon. “Being in possession of that knife is a criminal offence,” said Peter Brauti as he asked the investigator to hold up the knife in court for the jury. “Officers can die from those knives.” Brauti also said that a number of illegal narcotics were found in Yatim’s system, including ecstasy, marijuana and byproducts of cocaine. “At times he presented himself as somebody who was out of control.” The Canadian Press

IN BRIEF Three arrested over Nigerian dating scam Three people have been arrested in connection with what police are calling an international fraud and money-laundering scheme allegedly run by a secretive, violent Nigerian organization with affiliates around the world. Police say one of the alleged victims of the scheme is a 63-year-old Toronto woman who was defrauded of $609,000 over the course of three months in 2014.

Toronto police Det. Const. Mike Kelly says the woman has been devastated and “economically ruined.” Ikechukwu Amadi, 34, of Mississauga, Ont., Lineo Molefe, 31, and Akohomen Ighedoise, 41 — both from Toronto — have been charged with laundering the proceeds of crime and fraud over $5,000. Ighedoise is also charged with participating in a criminal organization. Police say they believe there may be other victims. The Canadian Press

liott Trudeau — “Just watch me.” The younger Trudeau, who was running for the Liberal leadership at the time, is now the prime minister-designate after helping his party win a majority government in Monday’s election. The note, which was posted on eBay, sold this afternoon for a total of $12,301. Kydd, who formerly worked in communications for the Nova Scotia Progressive Conserva-

tives, said the reference was instantly recognizable to him as someone with a “true love” of Canadian history. “I immediately understood the significance,” said Kydd. “I actually laughed out loud when I read it because I thought it was the absolute perfect response.” Kydd said he is considering what to do with the money from the eBay auction, including a potential charitable donation. Israel

One dead in case of mistaken identity A Jewish Israeli man was shot and killed in a scuffle with Israeli soldiers who suspected he was a Palestinian attacker, police said Thursday, in a reflection of the jittery mood that has gripped Israelis amid a spate of near-daily stabbings. The shooting came as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Germany for talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on how to restore calm. Kerry is set to meet with the Palestinians this weekend. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the shooting of the Israeli man in Jerusalem late Wednesday occurred after soldiers patrolling the area asked him to show his ID as he got

off a bus. The man refused, scuffled with the soldiers and then attempted to seize one of their weapons. A private security guard nearby shot the man, and one soldier also opened fire, police said. The man later died of his wounds. Police said the soldiers had grown suspicious when the man, speaking in Hebrew, asked to see their IDs and proclaimed, “I am ISIS,” referring to the Islamic State militant group. “The soldiers had high suspicions that he was a terrorist,” Rosenfeld said. Police later identified the man as a 28-year-old Jewish resident of Jerusalem, without providing further details. The Associated Press

The current outbreak Ten Israelis have been killed over the last month, mainly in stabbing attacks. On the Palestinian side, 48 people have been killed, 27 of them labeled by Israel as attackers, the others killed in clashes with Israeli

forces. The violence erupted a month ago, fueled by rumours that Israel was plotting to take over a sensitive Jerusalem holy site revered by both Jews and Muslims. The Associated Press

Arson suspected as fire makes refugee barracks unlivable The teenage refugees had a new home in the newly built asylum centre in southern Sweden. Hours before moving in, flames broke out in the wooden barracks. No one was hurt. But it was among a spate of fires at asylum facilities raising concerns that the Scandinavian country’s generous policy toward refugees is under a serious backlash. “Happily no one has died. These people have fled war,

hunger, terror, poverty and found shelter here, where they are met with fire,” said Mona Lindgren, a retired shopkeeper in this sleepy town just north of Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city. “That’s not acceptable.” Last week’s fire at the barracks, intended as temporary housing for unaccompanied children, was quickly extinguished, but the building became uninhabitable. The Associated Press

More fires Early Thursday, a former retirement home, also meant for refugees, was partly damaged by fire; no one was inside at the time. Two days earlier 14 refugees were evacuated in the middle of the night from a burning building near Munkedal, in southwestern Sweden. The Associated Press

Tensions rise at border crossings Balkans

Police struggle to handle thousands of refugees Refugees traded punches and scuffled with police at a Serbian border crossing and a man was stabbed in a similar clash on the Slovenian border Thursday, as pent-up pressures on their trek toward hoped-for safe haven in the European Union boiled over. Slovenian police said the stabbing took place near Rigonci earlier in the day, and that the victim was given medical treatment. The unrest at Berkasovo village on the Serbian border subsided after several minutes. But the outbreak reflected the frustrations of the tens of thousands of people facing long waits and other hardships as they make their way north over the Balkans each day in search of better lives in prosperous EU countries. Further along that route, Austrian police moved to relieve pent-up pressure which they feared could lead to violence, removing barriers at an overcrowded collection point at a border crossing with Slovenia. A day earlier, thousands of refugees broke through police obstacles at the same collection centre at the Spielfeld border point. Many of the refugees spilled out of the facility Thursday but then gathered nearby, following police instructions. But many others walked away from the border. The collection area just inside the Austrian border was again full by afternoon. Police and soldiers struggled to maintain

order as the crowd surged every time a group was separated for transport by bus to shelters and processing. Trampled, pushed or otherwise hurt, several people were seen receiving medical attention, including one boy, about 8 years old, whose leg was being

bandaged and a younger boy being given oxygen. At least two adults were taken away on stretchers. A police officer with a loudspeaker urged people to sit and wait for buses, warning “if you make trouble, we make trouble.” The Associated Press

Russian military opens up on Syrian operation middle east

Exhibition comes as leaders meet in Moscow Russian fighter jets streak into the sky from this base in western Syria for yet another day of the heavy bombing runs that have allowed Moscow to portray itself as a major global player, projecting military power far from its borders. While support crews attached a missile to an Su-30 jet for a mission Thursday, helicopter gunships buzzed around the base to make sure there was no threat of a ground attack. Russia has been conducting daily airstrikes in Syria since Sept. 30 to back a government offensive by its longtime ally. U.S. and others have criticized the strikes, which they say are aimed primarily at groups fighting Assad’s forces and likely only to fan the violence. The Russian Defence Ministry flew Moscow-based reporters to the air base early Thursday, giving a few international news organizations their first inside look at its operations here. The tour was organized Wednesday, the same day the Kremlin announced that Syrian President Bashar Assad had met in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin. Assad’s visit Tuesday was his first known trip abroad since the conflict broke out in 2011 and raised intense speculation about the their motives. A diplomatic push also was underway. Russia said Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry would meet Friday in Vienna and would be joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia and Turkey, both staunch critics of Assad. Senate endorses cybersecurity bill u.s.

Officials say bill is crucial to stop attacks The U.S. Senate has taken an initial step toward passing a bill aimed at improving cybersecurity. The bill is intended to encourage the sharing of threat information among companies and the U.S. government. Thursday’s 83-to-14 procedural vote was a healthy endorsement of the bill. It’s opposed by companies such as Apple, who say

it lacks key privacy protections. The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act is co-sponsored by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Republican Sen. Richard Burr. They say it’s critical to limiting increasingly highprofile cyberattacks such as the one suffered by Sony Pictures last year. More than 21 million Americans recently had their personal information stolen when the Office of Personnel Management was hacked in what that the U.S. believes was a Chinese espionage operation. Island nation creates huge sea sanctuary Conservation

Palau pledges no fishing, mining in 80% of its territory Lawmakers in the tiny Pacific island nation of Palau passed a law Thursday to make almost all its coastal waters a marine sanctuary in the latest move to expand ocean protections. A news release said Palau’s president plans to sign the legislation next week. Friday is a national holiday in Palau. The Palau National Marine Sanctuary Act designates 80 per cent of the nation’s maritime territory as a fully protected marine reserve in which no extractive activities, such as fishing or mining, can take place. At 500,000 square kilometres, or slightly larger than the U.S.

state of California, the sanctuary will be the sixth-largest fully protected marine area in the world. The measure also seeks to prevent illegal fishing by tightening rules for vessels passing through Palau’s waters. About 20 per cent of Palau’s waters will be reserved as a domestic fishing zone for local fishermen and small-scale commercial fisheries with limited exports. There will be a five-year transition as the number of commercial licenses issued to foreign commercial fishing vessels will be reduced and phased out. President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. described the measure as essential. “We want to lead the way in restoring the health of the ocean for future generations,” he said in a statement. The country created the world’s first shark sanctuary in 2009. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Airbnb offers host insurance sharing economy

Canada one of 15 new countries to get protection Airbnb is adding a new level of insurance coverage in Canada as part of wider support for people who list their properties through its service. The online accommodation provider announced Thursday that its Host Protection Insurance program, which launched earlier this year in the United States, would be rolled out in 15 more countries. The expanded coverage will provide compensation if a guest is injured at a property listed on Airbnb and brings a claim against the host. The insurance could also cover damages a guest causes to the surrounding area of a property — such as accidental water

damage if a pipe burst affects a neighbouring apartment. Coverage, which comes at no additional cost to the host, tops out at $1 million, the company said. The Host Protection Insurance program, which will be provided through a partnership with a Lloyd’s of London participating insurer, comes after Airbnb spent four years on an agreement that satisfied the insurers, said Airbnb product lead Jonathan Golden. “The insurance industry is not fast paced, so it has taken time to educate them on these platforms,” he said. “It has been a challenge to handle products like these (which are) unique and indi-

vidual solutions.” Airbnb has been growing in popularity as the so-called “sharing economy” becomes more commonplace with the help of taxi-hailing service Uber and various other apps. Golden said Airbnb executives wanted to line up a significant number of countries before it launched the expanded insurance coverage. Since its U.S. launch in January, less than 50 claims have been filed under the Host Protection program when factoring in all of the eight million guest bookings, he said. Airbnb, which offers a substitute to hotels, has about 33,000 host listings across Canada. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Major solar players expanding globally Canada’s few major players in the solar industry are growing up and heading out into the world. Private companies like Amp Solar Group Inc. and SkyPower Global, both of which were raised on Ontario’s generous renewable energy subsidies, are now making big pushes into emerging markets as they outgrow limited opportunities in Canada. AMP Solar chief executive Dave Rogers said that while the company is still committed to expanding in Canada, the market is relatively small. AMP has several hundred megawatts of power installed in the United Kingdom. It has also established itself in Japan, India, Thailand and Jordan, and is set to expand into the U.S. Toronto-based SkyPower has also made in-roads into emerging markets. It has announced roughly $8 billion US worth of deals to build solar projects in Bangladesh, Kenya, Panama, Mexico, Djibouti and India. Canadian Solar started with solar panel manufacturing in China and then branched out to become a major project developer. THE CANADIAN PRESS

CATHERINE LITTLE ON TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT SAD STUFF

A horrible car crash. Three sisters killed in a farm accident. The anniversary of the shooting in our nation’s capital. These images are seared into our collective memory. The reality is, many children will experience death. When I was in Grade 10, there was an announcement on the PA system in the middle of English class. A student had died. I remember the teacher was visibly shaken. What made me think about this more than 30 years later were recent news events. Multiple horrible car crashes. Three sisters killed in a farm accident. The anniversary of shooting in our nation’s capital that left a young soldier dead. These deaths were particularly horrific and will be deeply traumatic to many. The images of the dead and grieving seared into our collective memory. The reality is many children will experience death, sometimes that of a young friend. Occasionally, they learn about these things at school or in the media. Teachers can help, but other significant adults are just as important. A 2013 paper in the Alberta Journal of Educational Research reported that teachers are uncertain about discussing death in the classroom. And it certainly wasn’t covered when I went to teacher’s college. I wish I had been better prepared when one of my students died suddenly a few months into Grade Seven. My principal phoned me at home on a Sunday night so I would know ahead of the PA announcement. It was my first year teaching and I was struggling to get to know almost 200 students. It was her first year at a new school.

Children need to talk about death. Protecting them from what has happened often leaves them feeling alone, even alienated.

Significant adults — parents, teachers, extended family and even coaches — have a responsibility to answer kids’ questions about death head-on, writes Catherine Little. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Students and staff were encouraged to attend the funeral, and counselors were available. But we didn’t know who would need the most support. Some of the students barely knew who she was. Others were close friends. Significant adults — parents, guardians, extended family, special teachers and coaches etc. — are vital in these situations. According to the Canadian Virtual Hospice, children need to talk about death. Research shows that honesty is the best course of action. Protecting children from what has happened often

leaves them feeling alone, even alienated. And yes, children can even become deeply affected by a tragic story on the news. Each death will affect each child differently. It helps if there is an adult to start an honest conversation. It can start very simply with, “I’m really sad that they died. How do you feel?” Acknowledging feelings and leaving an open invitation to talk can make the difference. The student who died when I was in Grade 10 was my friend Loretta. No one in my high school knew we had been

friends since we were six or so. I visited her at home when she got sick. I stood by her hospital bed when we knew the end was near. And yet, I learned about her death like it was a reminder to try out for the volleyball team. Luckily, I had some significant adults in my life. They didn’t tell me it was for the best. They listened when I needed to rail against the injustice of it. But mostly, they were there to sit with me when I didn’t want to be alone. Catherine Little is a science and mathematics educator, consultant and writer.

It’s hard not to admire — even idolize — Marie Henein. Particularly after you’ve read the new magazine profile of her. Until it landed this week in Toronto Life, Henein had been defined in most Canadians’ minds as the enigmatic lawyer representing former CBC host Jian Ghomeshi against explosive sexual assault charges. That made her, to some, an enemy of feminism. To others, it made her not just a boss, but the boss. A frighteningly smart, incredibly talented (not to mention impeccably dressed) woman at the very top of criminal defense law in this country. So what if she is defending an alleged predator? Someone’s got to. Now, Henein is allowing us a far more intimate look, from which emerges a far more complex picture. And there are two questions to ask: Why now? And what (or so what) about her feminism? Described as a shark, a brilliant strategist and incredibly hardworking, Henein also emerges as an astute sculpturer of her own image. There are no missteps, there is always calculation. Take this comment, which a CBC story attributes to a lecture she gave in 2010: “The importance of developing your narrative starts from the moment the client walks into your office. It drives everything that you do, your analysis of the law, your

comments to the media, your approach with experts and witnesses.” Under that light, I read the article as part of the Ghomeshi saga. After all, Henein hardly needs the media profile — she got that just by taking the case, and her handling of it will speak far more than a magazine piece. Then there’s her feminism. A criminally low sexualassault conviction rate in this country won’t go away if lawyers like Henein keep doing their best in a system stacked against victims. On the flip side, lawyers should always do their best. Even if that means — as Henein has done in the past — attacking the credibility an alleged victim. She is undoubtedly a feminist, who rejects the message women have to be perfect to “have it all.” She brushes off questions about juggling motherhood and work by telling women to just do it. But that’s not the sentiment of someone inclined to prioritize structural inequality in society, or our legal system, over individual agency. Henein’s apparent religious devotion to the law seems to supersede her feminism. We seem to want powerful women to reflect our own brand of feminism. But Henein seems to judge herself on her devotion to upholding the law. It’s hardly fair to condemn her for doing exactly that.

Elijah returns at witching hour Interview

Actor goes back to big-budget roots in The Last Witch Hunter Matt Prigge

Metro | New York Like his fellow Lord of the Rings co-stars, Wood has the luxury of being picky. He could have settled for a string of never-ending fantasy knockoffs. Instead, like Viggo Mortensen, he’s done what he wants. The last decade has seen him lending his presence to smaller and/or unusual fare: the first-person horror Maniac; Open Windows, set entirely on a desktop; the TV show Wilfred, in which he acts opposite a talking dog. Wood comes back to both

big budgets and fantasy with The Last Witch Hunter, a super-sized Vin Diesel vehicle in which he plays the new priestly sidekick to the star’s immortal slayer of the supernatural. He didn’t take the job lightly. What convinced you this was a worthy return to big budget genre fare? It’s weird to even say this, because it wasn’t the case 20 years ago, but it was interesting to read something that was not based on a pre-existing source or was a sequel. It’s bizarre that we have to say one of a film’s merits is that it’s original. F—ing strange.... And I was just surprised by the script. I found the mythology to be really detailed, the worldbuilding to be really interesting. This film is strong on visuals. The sets, for one, appear to be mostly real, as

do many of the effects. Some people are asking questions about what it was like to deal with the CG. In reality it was almost imperceptible to us — save for the witch bar where there was quite a bit of CG effects. But even there, there were a lot of practical effects. Most of the time we were surrounded by real things.... A lot of the sets and environments we were in were real. That goes a long way to making you feel rooted in the space. Is it typical for you to get so involved with looking at all aspects of a production? These are all questions I ask, honestly. When I read something I want to know what the approach is, who’s going to shoot it, how it’s going to be shot, what is the visual tone of the film and what are the designs going to look like. I’m a nerd, so I always ask these questions.

“I think what’s interesting about the mythology (behind The Last Witch Hunter) is it posits that witches come before man.... witchcraft predates man,” says star Elijah Wood. contributed

things we learned from the Star Wars trailer (or think we did)

After a year of being teased, we finally got a full trailer this week for the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. It answered many questions but also raised new ones. What did we actually learn from the trailer? Quite a bit, but little of it is confirmed. Rigorous precautions have been taken to keep the plot of this seventh episode top secret. We can, however, tease out at least five things from the evidence at hand, with the assistance of fan speculation online. Torstar News service

The Force is for real

Darth Vader has an evil apprentice

The action picks up 30 years after events in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, long enough for younger people to wonder if stories about the Force and the dark side and Jedi Knights are real. “It’s true,” Harrison Ford’s Han Solo says. “All of it.”

Adam Driver’s villainous Kylo Ren, along with having a cool crossbar light sabre first glimpsed in last year’s teaser, harbours ambitions to follow in Darth Vader’s despotic footsteps with the First Order, an evil organization that morphed out of the vanquished Empire. “I will finish what you started,” he says, as Vader’s crumpled face mask suddenly flashes onscreen.

Rey takes the lead from Luke

Leia is upset

British actress Daisy Ridley is assuming the main hero role in The Force Awakens, similar to Mark Hamill’s Jedi Knight trainee Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. Her scavenger character Rey is every bit as resourceful as Luke, who so far has been barely seen and heard from. And her roly-poly sidekick droid BB-8 recalls Luke’s mechanical pal R2-D2.

Han Solo and Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia got happily married after all, but now they’re very worried about something. They’re briefly seen embracing in a manner that suggests great concern — Leia seems to be crying. Are they fearful for the fate of the galaxy or their daughter, who many fans think is Rey?

Trudeau in on the action Even Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister-designate, got in on the act. The same night his Liberals roared to a governing majority in the federal election, he viewed the Star Wars trailer with his family. He was photographed watching his two young sons duel with toy light sabres.

Right from the first teaser last year, John Boyega’s character Finn was hinted to be an Imperial Stormtrooper who is trying to go straight. He was trained to be a ferocious TIE Fighter but now says, “I have nothing to fight for.” Oscar Isaac’s X-Wing pilot character Poe Dameron, meanwhile, seems to be having trouble choosing between the light and the dark sides. He’s seen screaming at someone who appears to be Kylo Ren.

Journalists fixate on newsroom dramas, Classics majors love to hate sword-and-sandal movies and chefs adore films where food factors large: They have cult favourites like Big Night, Babette’s Feast and Tampopo. But in recent years, movies like I Am Love, starring Tilda Swinton, and Eat Pray Love have taken food styling to the next level: one that leaves the audience drooling and on the edge of ecstasy.

It’s called food porn. Judging from the trailer, Burnt, which opens in select theatres on Friday, is not only a tale of redemption but a movie that will leave food lovers quivering. Bradley Cooper stars as chef Adam Jones, a former bad-boy chef hungry for a third Michelin star. So he assembles a dream team to open up the best restaurant in the world. “I don’t want my restaurant to be a place where you come and eat,” he tells fellow chef Helena, played by Sienna Miller, as she effortlessly churns out fresh ropes of linguine. “We should be dealing in culinary orgasms.” Cooper researched his role by spending time with three professionals, including Gordon Ramsay and his former mentor Marco Pierre White, who was the first British chef to be awarded three

Michelin stars and, at the time, the youngest. But real life was just as instructional: “The thing that really paid off was the fact that I’d been doing research since I was a kid, working in restaurants,” Cooper said in a recent interview. I never cooked during my decade-long tenure at an Italian restaurant. But I washed dishes, bussed tables, served

food, recommended wine, expedited the pass and managed the front of house. I don’t miss the hours — long nights and early mornings — but I miss the verve of restaurant life; the hustle and those moments when you lift your head from the chaotic multi-tasking and everything is swinging, just right. It was an education, too.

WHAT IT MEANS TO SHOP AT the new N O R T H H I L L

I learned that the best tomato sauce is essentially just really good tomatoes; that Italians don’t put chicken on pizza, and green peppers are an anomaly in their kitchens. I learned classic combinations that allowed me to experiment with great success at home: think sausage and rapini; prosciutto and figs; good, extra virgin olive oil on everything. This wasn’t Michelinstarred cooking. Most dishes had five ingredients. Take the a fagiolo: red kidney beans, Italian tuna, tomatoes, red onion and fresh basil served over greens, which has become a dinnertime staple at home. Yes, I roll my eyes too when people talk about salads for dinner. But this salad satisfies — especially when served with good bread. When I made it the other night for dinner, Simon swooned. He could, however, do without my overly affected Italian pronunciation of the dish. But I’d wager no one will protest Bradley Cooper’s speaking French in Burnt. Cue the quivering. Meet the James Bond of journalism documentary

Chameleon from being an amusing documentary about an oddball character to an astonishing examination about the ethical boundary between journalism and activism. In fact, as the film points out, Anas “works directly with law enforcement to ensure that justice is carried out effectively” — not exactly non-partisan reportage.

MASTER OF DISGUISE

Vigilante reporter walks ethical line with covert tactics

Anas Aremyaw Anas is well-known for his elaborate disguises to bust open cases of corruption. While Mullins “didn’t get to use a lot of them in the story line,” he does admit there are a few favourites that pop up.

Steve Gow

For Metro Canada Anas Aremeyaw Anas is one compelling news reporter. Not only has the young investigator been labelled the “James Bond of Ghanaian journalism” but he has exposed sex-trafficking rings and uncovered human rights violations by going undercover using unorthodox costumes that include everything from posing as a brothel janitor to a sheik and even a rock. As uncovered in the new documentary Chameleon, Anas’s provocative work as editor of the New Crusading Guide has gained notoriety in Africa and even a mention on the world stage by President Barack Obama. But Anas is still largely unknown — mainly because he hides his identity to ensure the secrecy of his investigative stings. “A mutual friend of ours sent me this article about Anas in Atlantic Magazine and it was just incredible,” admitted filmmaker Ryan Mullins about how he discovered Anas. “I thought, this has to be my next story.” The Montreal-based director was so intrigued, he quickly decided to craft an onthe-ground exposé of Anas’ work. Through a mutual friend, Mullins easily located the disguised detective. But persuading the everelusive crusader to allow him to hang around while he cracked cases of corruption in the West African nation wasn’t quite as simple. “I’m naturally a very cautious person so I needed to think through it,” explained Anas, adding he even did a thorough background check on Mullins before agreeing to make the movie. “The bigger picture was what I wanted to see or propagate (in the film) so that people can understand the type of journalism I do and how I do it (and) I felt that a film like this was going to help do that.” In a sense, Anas used the opportunity

The Rock “Obviously the disguise as a rock is a great one,” admits Mullins. What’s basically two eyeholes cut into a giant paper bag was efficient enough to observe trucks smuggling cocoa beans cross-border in 2010. The Mental Patient Undercover for seven months, Anas posed as a mental patient to uncover the horrible conditions in a Ghanaian psychiatric hospital. He exposed abuse, corruption and even a neglected body in the late stages of decay. The Cop Using cheap prosthetics and a walkietalkie, Anas once dressed as an officer to catch corrupt customs officials at Ghana’s largest seaport leading to the recovery of $200 million in smuggled funds. steve gow/metro

While that grey area of his work may be controversial to many, Anas would be first to say it’s an area that is clearly worth pursuing. “I don’t mind any tag that I’m given,” said Anas. “If you call me a spy, I’ll take it. If you call me a journalist, I’ll take it. The key thing is, if journalism is about doing what benefits society, then I will call myself a journalist. The end (result) is most important — if it benefits society.”

to help disseminate his crusade to “name, shame and jail” those accused of misdeeds in Africa. But Mullins was soon surprised to find larger issues plaguing the reporter’s stealthy activism. “At first I was just drawn to this largerthan-life story,” said Mullins. “But gradually as time passed and some of the cases got a little more complicated, you can see the thought process going on — sometimes the lines that were being crossed. Was Anas a journalist? Was he a vigilante? What does it mean to be a journalist?” It’s just those ethical issues that elevate

Abrahamson: Thinking inside the box interview

Director tours psyche of captive family in new movie Matt Prigge

Metro | New York

At first glance, filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson’s current and previous work seems quite different. Frank is a film about a band fronted by a singer (Michael Fassbender) who wears a papiermache head. And Room is about a mother (Brie Larson) and son (Jacob Tremblay) who have been held captive for seven years. Yet both movies concern people trapped in tiny little worlds who nudge their way

a huge amount of visual freedom. We were trying to get inside his head in a subtle way, without using obvious heightened techniques. We were trying to show that this small space can be a whole world. When you go back to it at the end, you see it in a colder way than before. It was kind of amazing: it’s small but it felt quite full and rich, and it’s just this tiny little box. There are a number of films that make use of limited space, like Lifeboat, Life of Pi, Buried. Compared to something like Buried, we had loads of options. We had different parts of the room. We had three light sources which could create different moods. What we were trying to do was not make shooting in a small space feel like this thing. With Buried, it’s like, “Whoa, they made a story work in a coffin!” I wanted people to disappear into the richness of the story and for us to make it less intrusive. The amazing thing is you have the book, which is a first-person narrator. You lose that. So you think, “How do you keep with him?” The answer is you have his face, which is something you don’t have in a piece of literature. The human face is something you can look at for a long time without getting bored.

When they finally escape and have to adjust to the real world, is very different visually. What was your approach for that? You’ve held people in this room for so long. You’re with the actors. When you come out you put a wide shot on that garden and you allow the actors to do the work and you build up a soundtrack that’s way more three-dimensional and rich. You have to trust that a certain amount of that discovery will come from just that. You don’t need to go crazy and underscore the contrasts between the two halves. If you do that it becomes heavy-handed. My impulse is to always allow the audience to discover these contrasts and insights for themselves. The first half you only have two, sometimes three actors. What was that level of intimacy like for you over the four weeks of shooting that half? It’s such a long time together. It would be a nightmare if we hated each other. A big thing was in the casting process. We thought it was really important to find a genuinely warm person to play “Ma.” Brie’s a warm and funny person, and Jake’s just a wonderful child. They formed a real relationship. And that core is what made those weeks in the room so bright. When we burst into the real world, in a strange way we felt like the characters.

I’m becoming more optimistic in my middle age. I’m exploring how it might actually be possible to live in the world. Director Lenny Abrahamson

BEST BOOK TO MOVIE Adaptations Saying ‘I saw the movie’ is never a good answer when you’re asked ‘Have you read this book?’ Still, some movies get it pretty close. Here are five to (almost) fake it with. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

The Commitments It’s the music here that adds so much. Irish writer Roddy Doyle’s first book in The Barrytown Trilogy (followed by The Snapper and The Van, which were also made into movies) became an unqualified on-screen success — Mustang Sally, anyone? The unemployed gang of Dublin residents who start up a band is faithful to the book and brings to life the language and the grittiness of the time.

Lord of the Rings Everyone thought J.R.R. Tolkien’s series of books creating the world of the hobbits was unfilmable. It took director Peter Jackson’s three blockbuster movies — Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King — to effectively evoke Tolkien’s imaginary world.

Carrie

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The three books in now-deceased author Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series have all been made into movies — and with a new book just out, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, carrying on the character of Lisbeth Salander, chances are there’ll be a fourth. The first three were made into movies in Swedish; this one is the 2011 remake starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

To Kill a Mockingbird It’s arguable as to which is more famous, the book written by Harper Lee or this movie, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and directed by Robert Mulligan. Lee did have a hand in writing the screenplay. And, certainly, in people’s minds the two are inseparable; try reading the book without hearing Peck’s voice, or Scout’s either as the adult narrator or as a child.

The movie brings to full technicolour life some of the more graphic scenes in Stephen King’s first novel. Carrie was also the first screen adaptation of King’s work and it now stands as both a classic book and movie in the horror genre, thanks to director Brian De Palma’s eye for making things as scary as possible. Dean Norris is not simply another cop in Remember Richard Crouse

For Metro Canada Dean Norris is best known for portraying police officers. “I play DEA, CIA, FBI, LAPD; I got ‘em all,” he once said. He became instantly recognizable to a generation of TV fans as the boisterous DEA agent Hank Schrader on Breaking Bad, and in his new film he’s once again playing a cop, but with a twist. “You almost feel sorry for him,” says Norris, “until you realize who he is.” The film is Remember, a road movie of sorts. Christopher Plummer plays Zev, a man on a journey to justice, a quest to find the Nazi guard who killed his family 70 years before. Along the way he meets Norris as Officer Kurlander, a sad and lonely man with a connection to one of Zev’s suspects. Their explosive meeting is difficult to discuss without giving away a plot point, but suffice to say Norris reveals when he had a chance to watch it he

did so with his hands covering his face. “We had three cameras going and I was like, ‘Just run them and let me hit it,’” says the fifty-two-year-old actor. “It was one of the few times where I almost felt out of body. You know when you see red and get kind of blinded? I’m not even sure what I said some of the time.” Norris credits his director and co-star with making the five-day filming of the wild sequence possible. “(Atom Egoyan) does what the good directors do,” he says, “and makes a comfortable space for you to play in and feel safe, which was important on this damn thing because it is so crazy. You want to feel safe to be able to go to wherever you have to go to, and I did with him.” Norris describes Plummer as one of the greats. “It was like working with Laurence Olivier.” “It was a pleasure to watch him,” he says. “There would be moments where I’d be in the scene and saying to myself, ‘I’m looking into the eyes of a man who has been in these scenes for decades. Been in the moment with unbelievable people in unbelievable movies.’ It’s like I wanted that to seep into me. Steal his essence. “It’s a memory I’ll have for the rest of my life.”

Cases of real life Paranormal Activity interview

Investigator talks about truth in those ghost films Matt Prigge

Metro | New York

Full disclosure: this writer doesn’t believe in ghosts. But he does believe, as scientists do, that there is plenty we can’t currently explain about the universe. So does Christopher Chacon, an “anomalist” and a “scientific investigator of paranormal phenomena.” Chacon does some advising on the Paranormal Activity series — whose latest, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, hits theatres today. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. contributed

A former magician and illusionist, Chacon went from a full-on skeptic to someone who occupies a space in-between skepticism and belief. He investigates extreme cases of phenomena that he claims cannot be explained, at least not now, by rigorous scientific explanation, and could possibly point to ghosts or something else beyond humanity’s limited perception. We spoke to Chacon about the science behind his approach and what the movies, he says, get right.

It turned out they were testing a new stealth bomber, and every time it would take off it would have this very strange trajectory, and it wound send a huge impact tremor that shook the whole house. Nobody had explanations while it happened. There were no earthquakes, there was no airport nearby. It was a top secret aircraft, so there was another explanation. Seventy to 80 per cent of phenomena that happens does have a rational explanation. But of course there is the 20 to 30 per cent that cannot be dismissed, cannot be explained by scientific means.

A lot of films about the supernatural tend to embellish these events. How much do the Paranormal Activity films get right? Katherine Waterston’s climb to big roles

Writer Aaron Sorkin turns fact into fiction interview

The man behind Steve Jobs film defends his creative liberties

Katherine Waterston stars in Steve Jobs. contributed

In the last few years, mostly thanks to Inherent Vice, Katherine Waterston has made the shift from struggling actor to an “It” girl. In fact she’s in London shooting the J.K. Rowling-penned Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. “I feel like I’m on the backlot at Paramount in 1950 and Elizabeth Taylor’s going to come around the corner,” she says. Right now, though, she’s promoting another major release: Steve Jobs, the Aaron Sorkin-written account of the late Apple icon (played by Michael Fassbender), which relates the frenzied buildup to three of his most significant product launches. Waterston plays Chrisann Brennan, an ex who’s justifiably furious with him, as he doesn’t want to claim paternity of the young girl they had together. The move to major productions must be jarring. How have you dealt with it? It’s not really as much of a shift as I probably imagined when I would be fantasizing about having a proper career. (Laughs) You don’t

know what you’re doing and it all comes together at the last minute. Steve Jobs has this feeling of controlled chaos. What was it like being in the middle of that? That’s supposing something that wasn’t really my experience. I didn’t feel it was particularly controlled or particularly chaotic while I was working on it. It felt more like we were chipping away at something. When you’re shooting a scene you’re just trying to find everything that’s in it, especially when you have such good writing. When a scene is really well-written it’s like, “Ok, I don’t know what’s in there but I know enough to know there’s a lot in there. And how much am I going to be able to find before they call cut?” I’m glad it felt chaotic. That’s a testament to Danny (Boyle)’s skill (as director). I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m glad you’re describing it that way. metro new york

Aaron Sorkin will remind you that he is a writer when talking about his latest film, Steve Jobs. As such, the dialogue-heavy account of the late Apple cofounder’s life contains obvious fabrications in service of a larger truth. It’s centred on a series of verbal smackdowns between Jobs and various members of his inner circle, with Michael Fassbender starring as the tyrannical genius, Seth Rogen as co-founder/friend Steve (Woz) Wozniak and Kate Winslet as former Macintosh marketing chief Joanna Hoffman. In the face of ardent critics — including Jobs’s widow Laurene, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Apple’s head of design and close friend Jony Ive — Sorkin has insisted this is “a painting, not a photograph.” “I would describe almost all non-fiction movies that way. But this one in particular,” the screenwriter says in a recent visit to Toronto to discuss the film, which largely steers clear of impersonations and familiar catchphrases. “And that’s not to say I’ve changed any biographical facts about Steve Jobs. Here’s what I’ve done: Steve did not have confrontations with the same five people 40 minutes before every product launch that he

Michael Fassbender plays the titular role in Steve Jobs, opening this weekend. contributed

did. That’s a writer’s conceit and it announces itself pretty early on as one. The content of those confrontations, those are real.” If people are looking for a journalistic account, Sorkin encourages them to check out Walter Isaacson’s exhaustive biography. “The Santa Fe Opera just commissioned an opera about Steve Jobs that’ll be out in 2017 — I wonder if people are going to be going around saying, ‘Now, wait a second. Was Steve really a tenor in real life?”’ Here Sorkin talks about condensing a life and dealing with critics. The construct employed here is obvious. But people who were close to Jobs seem to be upset that softer elements of the man they knew are not presented as they’d like. The people I think you’re talking

about — Mrs. Jobs, Tim Cook the CEO of Apple, Jony Ive — haven’t seen the movie. So they wouldn’t know what’s in the movie. I think they’re reacting to Walter’s book and they don’t know what’s in the movie. The people who knew Steve well who have seen the movie (including) Woz ... have reacted very positively to it and feel that Steve was captured. So I would just ask that judgment be reserved until you’ve seen the movie. It is the movie you set out to make. I’m really proud of everything that I’ve written — and that said, there isn’t anything that I’ve written that I wouldn’t mind having back and doing it again. And the same is true for this movie, for Steve Jobs, but not because of anything anyone has said.... It’s a little surprising that there are certain

things which in 2015 are coming up with very sophisticated audiences. For instance, take a movie like The Queen — no one thinks that Peter Morgan, the writer of The Queen, was actually in Balmoral Castle when these discussions were going on.... Writers are going to invent dialogue because people don’t speak in dialogue and people’s lives don’t unfold in a series of scenes that form a narrative arc. Seth Rogen will surprise his comedy fans for showing a lot of emotion as Woz. He’s fantastic in this movie. I think I’m right that we didn’t discuss any other actor but Seth. Someone who can do comedy as honestly and intelligently as Seth does, there’s really no worry in your mind that they’re going to be able to do this material. You’d worry, ‘Is someone able to be funny?’ but you wouldn’t worry going the other way. I never had a concern about Seth being able to handle this material. the canadian press

Ode to an obscure English music scene Interview

Northern Soul is a sleeper hit about a 1970s cultural anomaly Steve Gow

For Metro Canada There was glam rock. There was new wave. And who could forget disco. But there is one 1970’s musical movement that you may not have heard of — northern soul. Captured in the new film Northern Soul, the cultural movement briefly emerged in a distinct part of Britain and it consisted of particular dance moves and a penchant for obscure American soul music. Photographer-turned-filmmaker Elaine Constantine has such fond memories of being a part those dance-hall days, she spent 15 years making a drama about coming-of-age in the midst of that northern English scene.

“Whenever I wasn’t shooting photographs or in the lab, I was writing this film and trying to get it produced,” admitted Constantine recently about the inspired narrative of two teens discovering the scene. “Everything that happened has happened to someone at some point that I know and the actual characters all exist — they’re all real people (so) they kind of wrote themselves in a way.” Over those years, Constantine slowly accumulated funds, found her cast and taught hundreds of extras specific dance moves (“we were training those kids for three or four years”) but once she completed her project, she was disappointed to discover her efforts would only be seen on a handful of screens across the U.K. “We put the message out to all the fans who had been following the film’s progress and said demand your local cinema puts it on,” said Constantine, whose followers were obviously eager. “Within two weeks we had 125 cinemas confirmed and a

A lost legacy Artists never knew their reach in the U.K. Constantine’s affection for the era is bittersweet. After all, she recently met a destitute, former-soul singer named Darrow Fletcher that only discovered his popularity after being invited to the U.K. for a northern soul event. “He could hardly get on the stage he was so unwell but he was overwhelmed by the effect his music had had on these people,” said Constantine. “That moment seeing his legacy in the U.K. was wonderful.” It took three to four years to teach hundreds of extras the dance moves for Northern Soul. contributed

Huard’s earnest Steve Guibord just wants to do the right thing, but finds himself disillusioned by jingoism, gladhanding and shameless horsetrading. “We sort of became cynical about politicians, I would say the last 15 or something years. We all see them as evil, as corrupted or with bad intentions and power junkies — and I don’t think that’s the case,” Huard said while screening the film at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. “I think most of them are just normal people trying to make a difference and realizing that the system is so big, the machine is huge and tough to steer, that the toll on them is bigger than they thought.... It’s not easy and I wanted to show the human side of that job and maybe, I hope, give some hope back to the voters’ mind.” It’s a coincidence that this French-language feature hits select theatres around the time Canadians went to the polls, added Huard. He said writer-director Philippe Falardeau began writing the story five years ago,

Clement said her character is a bit more savvy about what’s at stake than her downto-earth husband, a former hockey player who maintains an against-all-odds optimism in a series of community meetings that are clearly hijacked by interest groups. “I wanted to push this side

of her ... that was a little ambitious,” said Clement, best known for her roles in the Xavier Dolan films Mommy, Laurence Anyways and I Killed My Mother. Working on the film was “like a lesson in Canadian politics,” she said. “It also (offers) a different look at our precious democracy that we kind of maybe forget we have sometimes.” The Canadian Press

Books

BOOKS IF YOU CAN’t get enough of BASEBALL If there was ever a time to venture into the sports genre, this is it. One in four Canadians tuned in to some part of Game 5 last week when the Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers. Now, even more is at stake as Toronto attempts to avoid elimination and advance to the World Series for the first time since 1993. From historical to analytical, biographical to fiction, baseball literature — like the games themselves — can capture the imagination of anyone. Metro looks at five recent books if you want even more baseball before Friday’s important game. ETHAN ROTBERG/FOR METRO

The rules The game changer At 13 years old, Mo’ne Davis was on the cover of Sports Illustrated after becoming the first female pitcher to win a game in the Little League World Series. In her autobiography Mo’ne Davis: Remember My Name: My Story from First Pitch to Game Changer, she covers learning to play baseball with the boys in Philadelphia to her rise to stardom on a national stage. Davis breaks longheld stereotypes and proves to young women they need not be relegated to softball. It’s an inspiring memoir for young readers and adults alike.

Baseball is known — heck, even loved — for its complex rules and statistics. Reading the game’s official rulebook would be beyond tedious for even the most hardcore fanatic. So You Think You Know Baseball: A Fan’s Guide to the Official Rules by Peter E. Meltzer uses real-life situations and commentary to explain both the obvious and ambiguous aspects of the game.

NEW

The mental game

The Art of Fielding: A Novel by Chad Harbach doesn’t require the reader to have a heavy understanding of the game. The book focuses on a fictitious small liberal arts college baseball team. The protagonist — an undersized athlete with an unusual gift for fielding — is approaching a record for errorless games until things go awry. Now struggling with the mental aspect of the game, he faces an existential crisis.

The road trip

It’s been more than 10 years since the Expos were relocated to Washington D.C. to become the Nationals, but the memories remain for fans in Quebec and beyond. In Up, Up, and Away: The Kid, the Hawk, Rock, Vladi, Pedro, le Grand Orange, Youppi!, the Crazy Business of Baseball, and the Ill-fated but Unforgettable Montreal Expos, Jonah Keri speaks to just about everyone involved with the team — from fans, players and executives. From the early years, to the strike-shortened team of 1994, to the ownership that allowed the team to be moved, Up, Up, and Away is the definitive history of Canada’s first major league baseball team.

Best friends Ben Blatt and Eric Brewster set out on the impossible task of visiting all 30 baseball stadiums in 30 days. Part story of baseball fandom and part road trip logistics, I Don’t Care if We Never Get Back: 30 Games in 30 Days on the Best Worst Baseball Road Trip Ever is a story of friendship, and how it is tested and endures through the many challenges along the way. It’s an entertaining look at what will remain only a dream for many fans of the game.

About an hour drive from Cairns, the sprawling organic tropical orchard produces 12 different types of wine and port, many award-winning, priced at $25 a bottle. The Eco Lover Unwind inside a luxurious tree house to a symphony of birds, frogs and waterfalls at Daintree Ecolodge and Spa (rooms starts at $330 a night). This 32-acre property is dotted with wild orchids and papaya trees, and lies within the lush Daintree Rainforest. The world is not enough

If you think you’ve seen a lot of the world, consider James Bond. Everyone’s favourite movie spy has visited nearly 50 countries and every continent over the course of his long and adventurous career. He’s even been to outer space. His latest movie, Spectre, takes him back to Mexico City, among other places, and brings him into contact with his arch-nemesis Blofeld. In honour of the upcoming release, we’ve chosen five epic travel destinations that Bond has visited and so can you. MARK STACHIEW FOR METRO

Luxor, Egypt

Jamaica The first assignment of Sean Connery’s Bond in Dr. No brought him to Jamaica, which happens to be where series creator Ian Fleming wrote all of his Bond novels. His Goldeneye villa is now part of a hotel of the same name. Your visit should take you to the beach at Dunn’s River Falls, where an appreciative Bond watched Honey Ryder, played by Ursula Andress, emerge from the sea. Be sure to pack your white bikini.

Schilthorn, Switzerland Britain’s super-spy spends a lot of time on skis as many of his adventures take him to the European Alps. Some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the series is set atop the Schilthorn in Switzerland as seen in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, George Lazenby’s only Bond movie. Visitors can dine at the Piz Gloria, a revolving restaurant on the summit, which was completed thanks to financing from the movie’s producers.

Roger Moore’s Bond amassed a ton of frequent-flyer miles as he criss-crossed the globe chasing villains in a series of exotic locales, including the awe-inspiring, ancient Karnak temple at Luxor in Egypt. While there, he battled his metal-mouthed foe, Jaws. You won’t have to worry about Jaws if you go, but some travellers are skipping Egypt these days because of terrorism fears, real or imagined. Bond laughs at terrorists.

Put on your tuxedo and brush up on your baccarat skills at the Casino de Monte Carlo in Monaco, and hope that you are as lucky at gambling as Pierce Brosnan’s Bond was in Goldeneye. If you’re bad at cards, you can always play the slot machines, which somehow seem out of place here.

For Metro Canada

Book now The clock is running out on early booking deals. Destinations like Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and Kimberley Alpine Resort located in British Columbia’s interior are offering two nights free when you book five or more nights, the fifth day on the mountain free and free skiing for kids if you book by Nov. 30.

Planning to hit the slopes this winter? Here are some tips to make the most out of this year’s ski season.

beauty. In British Columbia you will find great ski-in/skiout options like Kelowna’s Silver Star Resort or Sun Peaks in Kamloops. For a mix of culture and ski consider spending your days on the slopes of Le Massif or Mt. Ste. Anne while you spend your nights in charming Quebec City. Hotel or condo? If you stay in a hotel where you can’t cook your own meals, pick a destination with a variety of dining options. If you don’t mind the cooking

and cleaning, book a condo with kitchenette and inquire about food delivery options. Some of the resorts like Big White near Kelowna have arrangements with local grocery stores to deliver food to your condo. They can have it waiting for you when you arrive, saving you the need of a rental car. Embrace technology Resorts across Canada are using the Flaik GPS system for children’s ski lessons. It not only tracks kids all over

the mountain, but shares stats with parents, including the trails their kids traversed, how much vertical they skied or boarded and their average speed. Want to scratch heli-skiing off your bucket list? Nonstop Ski and Snowboard’s Ready to Heli program is a great option for skiers who may be nervous about their ability to ski in powder or offpiste. The package includes three days of coaching at B.C.’s Fernie Alpine Resort, a day of

cat-skiing and has you graduate to a day of heli-skiing in the Purcell Mountains at the end of the week. What about the non-skier in the family? The fastest-growing winter activity for non- skiers is fatbiking. Monster tires and low gearing mean biking in snow is easy for both first-timers and seasoned cyclists. Many spots across the country including smaller resorts like Ontario’s Horseshoe Resort now offer groomed trails for fatbikers.

Must beat Royals twice in K.C. to reach World Series The Kansas City Royals have established a reputation for dramatic post-season comebacks the past couple of years, beginning with last season’s wild-card victory over Oakland. Turns out, the Toronto Blue Jays have some never-say-quit spirit as well. After going on a second-half run to make the playoffs, then rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Texas in a best-of-five matchup, the Blue Jays will try to beat the Royals in another win-or-else situation in Game 6 of the AL Championship Series on Friday night. Toronto forced the series back to Kansas City with a 7-1 rout Wednesday, closing to 3-2. “You look at all the elimination games, our offence has really come to life,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Thursday. “We’ve said all along that’s the key to our team, scoring runs. You hate to make a habit of it, but maybe we can pull it off again.” David Price will take the mound for the Blue Jays after his collapse in the series opener, when he tossed six shutout innings and then surrendered

David Price is ready to prove his critics wrong. The Blue Jays ace gets the start in Game 6 on Friday with his team’s season on the line. Price has dominated in the regular season throughout his eight-year career, but he’s never won as a starter in the playoffs. “I have to prove that I can pitch at this point in the season in the playoffs,” he said Thursday. “I get that. But I don’t have to go out there and prove that I’m a good pitcher. I think I’ve done that over my career.” tHE canadian PRESS

five runs in the seventh. Yordano Ventura will oppose him for Kansas City. He was only marginally better, allowing three runs and eight hits in 5-1/3 innings before watching the comeback win from the dugout. “I’m very fortunate and happy that this game has landed on my turn, here in Kansas City, and with the opportunity to take this club to the World Series,” Ventura said through catching coach Pedro Grifol,

acting as a translator. “I’ll be ready for this game.” The Blue Jays promise they will be, too. Toronto lost the first two games against the Rangers at home, then won three straight with its season hanging in the balance. The first two were at Texas, and the last at Rogers Centre, but none of the victories was even close — all by at least three runs. The Blue Jays lost the first two games in Kansas City, too. But in Game 3 in Toronto, the

hosts overcame a 1-0 deficit and rolled to an 11-8 victory. “We’ve been through a bunch of hurdles all year,” Blue Jays’ Chris Colabello said. “We were 7-1/2 games (back) at the deadlines. ... We had to claw back from that. We were down two games back in the division series and we clawed back from that. I’ll tell you what, we’re going to leave everything we have out there.” They may have to do just that. While the Blue Jays have

won four straight elimination games, the Royals are 6-2 in their last eight post-season games at Kauffman Stadium. The ballpark matters in this series. While the homer-happy Blue Jays were built with the small dimensions of Rogers Centre in mind, the speedy, defensive-minded Royals were built for their home park. “Nothing but positivity. We’ve got a 3-2 lead and we’re heading back to Kansas City,” Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said. “That’s where we play our best baseball, so everyone is still feeling pretty good about the series.” tHE associated PRESS

In the 1960s, the idea of the Mets winning a World Series was as farfetched as man walking on the moon. Just 88 days after Neil Armstrong took his giant leap, the Amazin’s were champions. Now Tyler Clippard is convinced an extraterrestrial has led the Mets back to the Fall Classic. “He’s not human. He’s not on this planet right now,” Clippard said about Daniel Murphy. “Another life form jumped into his body.” It seems as if it is in the stars whenever the Mets are successful. In 1969, there were hard-to-fathom catches by Tommy Agee and Ron Swoboda in the Series against B a l t i m o r e . In 1986, there was Mookie Wilson’s grounder that went through Bill Buckner’s legs at first base to cap a three-run, 10thinning rally in Game 6 against Boston. The Mets were twice down to their final strike. Now there’s Murphy, who has seven home runs in nine playoff games, setting a major league record by going deep in each of his last six. the associated press

Elliott back for Argos CFL PREVIEWS

While Jennings and Mathews face off when Ticats visit B.C. Kevin Elliott is thankful to be back playing football. The lanky receiver returns to the Toronto Argonauts’ lineup Friday night when they face the Montreal Alouettes at Tim Hortons Field. Elliott missed last weekend’s 27-15 loss there to the Calgary Stampeders following the death of his maternal grandmother, Madear. “I missed my guys, I feel good being back up here,” Elliott said following Thursday’s practice. “It was good for me to go back home and be with my mom. “It’s always

The 23-year-old Jennings moved from No. 3 to No. 1 on the depth chart with B.C. after starter Travis Lulay and backup John Beck got hurt, while the 24-year-old Mathews assumed the top job in Hamilton when Zach Collaros was lost to seasonending knee injury. And while Jennings and Mathews have each shown poise and promise, their teams are in very different predicaments with the regular season winding down. The Lions (5-10) need a win in the West Division playoff chase after blowing leads the last two weeks, while the Tiger-Cats (10-5) are in a battle for top spot in the East.

Dutch football great Johan Cruyff is battling lung cancer, his spokeswoman said Thursday. “He has been in hospital this week for tests and lung cancer has been confirmed,” said Carole Thate, a spokeswoman for the former Ajax and Barcelona star. She gave no further comment on Cruyff’s condition, saying he was undergoing further tests. Cruyff, 68, who personified his country’s attacking Total Football in the 1970s, was a smoker during his playing days and until undergoing an emergency heart bypass in 1991. Afterward, he became the face of an anti-smoking campaign. His career began at Ajax and took him to Barcelona where, as player and later coach, his footballing philosophy laid the foundations for the dominant Barca teams of recent years. SOCCER Germany insists World Cup bid was an ‘honest’ one Germany’s football federation president again denied any vote-buying in the winning bid to host the 2006 World Cup, saying Thursday that “everything was done with honest means.” Wolfgang Niersbach said a payment to FIFA first reported by the weekly Der Spiegel last week was privately arranged to secure a FIFA grant to the German World Cup organizers. The deal was made during a private meeting between

suspended FIFA President Sepp Blatter and World Cup organizing committee chief Franz Beckenbauer in January 2002, Niersbach said. Der Spiegel reported Friday that a slush fund of 10.3 million Swiss francs (about $6 million) was set up to buy the votes of four Asian representatives on the FIFA executive committee. At a hastily organized news conference Thursday, Niersbach repeated that Germany had done nothing wrong in bidding for the 2006 World Cup. the associated press

For Metro Canada The combination of crunchy fish, spicy mayo and crusty bread is killer. And a sandwich for dinner is easy yet satisfying. Ready in Prep time: 15 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients • 2 Tilapia filets • 1/4 cup corn meal • Salt and pepper • 1/4 tsp chili powder • A bit of vegetable oil • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped • 4 buns • 4 romaine leaves, chopped • 2 tomatoes, sliced • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1 1/2 Tbsp ketchup • 3 tsp Sriracha Directions

1. Spread corn meal evenly on a plate and toss in salt, pepper, chilli and parsley until it’s all combined. Spread the mixture evenly on your plate. 2. Rinse fish and pat them dry with paper towel. Press the fish into the corn meal and turn over, press the other side into the corn meal. 3. In a large pan, heat some vegetable oil to medium heat. Place your fish down in the pan. It will take about 5 minutes on the first side and only about 3 on the other side. 4. While your fish is cooking, mix up your mayo, ketchup and Sriracha in a small bowl. 5. Check your fish. The corn meal will be crusty and the fish should be opaque. Break your fish into large pieces. 6. Slice open your buns and spread mayo on each side. Place your chopped lettuce down, then fish, then tomato. for more meal ideas, VISIT sweetpotatochronicles.com
