Mayor calls for answers TRANSIT

City spending LRT cash ahead of Alta. funding commitment Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary The train has left the station, but it may never arrive if Mayor Naheed Nenshi doesn’t get a firm LRT funding commitment from the province. The City of Calgary has already put their money where their mouth is, so to speak, and invested cash in design and acquisition for the proposed north-south LRT Green Line. But the mayor said he needs answers from the province if the city wants to continue the build out. During a GreenTRIP announcement Thursday, Infrastructure and Transportation

Minister Brian Mason squirmed as Nenshi put him in the hot seat over whether or not the province can commit Green Line dollars with a looming $10-billion deficit. “We’re not going to get the money in this budget — it’s not coming in this budget is it?” inquired Nenshi. To which Mason quietly responded: “He’s trying to get me fired.” “If it’s not in this budget, what I’m going to need towards this summer and this autumn is a real firm commitment, because the city has been fronting the costs on design work and some land acquisition,” Nenshi continued. “I don’t want to spend a whole bunch of the city’s cash if this is going to be a non-starter.” Mason gave the mayor a preview of a letter he sent in response to funding queries, but no solid commitment on cash. “We’re very interested in supporting you, we have difficult financial circumstances,” said Mason.
