Residents of Beacon Hill, Abasand and Waterways — Fort McMurray neighbourhoods hardest hit by wildfire earlier this month — will be unable to return home this week, as more than 500 homes have been declared uninhabitable, Premier Rachel Notley said in a press conference Monday. Since the fire ripped through the city, extensive testing of air, soil and ash has revealed the presence of chemical con-

tamination. In particular, the ash has very high pH levels, which makes it very caustic, according to Dr. Karen Grimsrud, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. “These results are not unexpected, but it’s critical we take steps to protect residents from them,” she said. Residents of the affected neighbourhoods will be offered an escort to view their homes and retrieve belongings but won’t be able to stay permanently until the debris is removed, which could take until September, officials said. “I realize this will be very difficult news to hear, but as always, safety and health remain top priority,” Notley said.
