Metro | Calgary Several groups in Inglewood have raised concerns about building a new four-lane bridge into the community and it appears the city is prepared to hear them out. The city was planning to hold online and in-person engagements this month about its plans for a new 9 Avenue Southeast bridge — often known as the Fort Calgary Bridge. However those plans are on hold after concerns were raised by the Inglewood Community Association (ICA) and the Inglewood BRZ about putting a fourth lane on the new bridge, to match the

four lanes of road on both sides of the bridge. “Congestion isn’t going to be solved by more lanes,” said Sara Poldaas, president of the ICA. “There’s lots of research that shows that you don’t build more roads to ease congestion.” She noted that at peak hours, the four lanes on 9 Avenue are more like three anyway, since one is a bus-only lane. At other times, one lane is used for parking. Rebecca O’Brien, executive director of the Inglewood BRZ, said local businesses benefit from the traffic calming effects of having a three-lane bridge. A spokeswoman for the city confirmed the city has pressed pause on plans for information sessions in favour of more consultation with local groups. “We haven’t made any decisions at this point. We want to go out and talk to the community more about this,” she said.
