Nail biter as anxiety drags on Too Close to call

Supporters try not to show the strain as results roll in Matt Kieltyka

Metro | Vancouver It’s official: the 2017 British Columbia provincial election is close. Really close. Too close to call, in fact, as of Metro’s deadline Tuesday night. As of press time, the Liberals and NDP were tied with 42 seats each and the Green Party appeared to hold the balance of power with a historic three seats — though many of those ridings had yet to be declared. Early poll results showed the Liberals pull ahead with a healthy lead, but the incumbent party and the NDP were soon swapping positions back and forth as more and more stations began reporting their results. Supporters in both camps looked on with anxious anticipation. Some, to their credit, refused to let on how much tension was in the air, as otherwise sedate Liberal voters watched the results wearing “Keep calm and Christy on” T-shirts at party headquarters at Fairmont Waterfront. The NDP, meanwhile, saw its Vancouver Convention Centre hall packed full and raucous — though campaign staffers remarked on how overwhelm-

ing it was to watch the results come in. No matter who emerges the victor on Wednesday morning, the tight race mirrored what many polls and observers have been saying about a particularly heated campaign fraught with attack ads, scandals and fierce exchanges.

Meanwhile, the B.C. Liberals have stuck to their go-to lines on job creation and economic growth once more as they tried to hang on to a fifth consecutive term in office, according to the professor emeritus at the Beedie School of Business. Public opinion polls before the election also seemed to

“It was much more of a horse race this time around,” said Simon Fraser University’s Lindsay Meredith. “The NDP represented a party that actually had a shot — they were actually trying to have a little bit more of an organized platform this time — and the Green Party became a wild card.”

point to a nail-biter. The last Forum Research poll on Monday night projected a 42-42 seat split and a minority government. “The race has been very close,” Forum president Lorne Bozinoff said at the time. “Over the last week, the two parties have been see-sawing back and forth. But when you take the margin of error into consideration, we’ve seen the parties essentially tied.... The polls have tightened up to nearly dead even.” Veteran poll analyst Eric Grenier had also projected a statistical tie, as had Insights West. Coupled with the political drama in B.C. — over issues such as housing affordability, the economy and political donations — has been a global trend against incumbent governments, according to Meredith. “I think what’s happening is a besieged and pissed-off middle class who, for want of anything better, is just kicking over the whole bucket because they’re fed up with the way business is going,” said Meredith. “That sets the cat among the pigeons and creates all kinds of unknowns. It’s a global trend, whether it be Trump politics or the Brexit crowd, I see some serious push-back that seems to be popping up all over the place.” With files from David P. Ball

Green Leader Andrew Weaver casts his ballot at Gordon Head Middle School in Victoria. Chad Hipolito/the canadian press

B.C. Greens make gains third-place party

Candidates won two key ridings Wanyee Li

Metro | Vancouver The BC Green Party won at least two ridings in Tuesday’s election as of Metro’s print deadline, doubling the number of seats they held last election. Green Leader Andrew Weaver was re-elected in Oak Bay-Gordon Head and Adam Olsen was elected in Saanich North and the Islands. Sonia Furstenau was also leading in the Cowichan Valley. The Greens doubled their hold on the popular vote, earning 15.6 per cent as of deadline. The Greens polled as high as 24 per cent province-wide in the middle of the campaign but dropped to 18 per cent the eve of the election, according to Forum Research. It’s not surprising the Green Party, which gained a seat in the legislature for the first time four years ago, was unable to translate that popularity boost into seats on election day, says UBC political science professor Kathryn Harrison. “There was certainly a very strong push especially from the NDP to pressure Green voters to vote for the NDP instead, arguing that strategic voting is necessary

to defeat the Liberals.” But she says winning even two seats — one more than last election — would be a victory for the third-place party. “Winning more than one is the baseline. That’s not guaranteed by any means. That would be a challenge to do,” Harrison told Metro before polls closed Tuesday. Green leader Andrew Weaver won the party’s first seat in the 2013 election in the Oak BayGordon Head riding. His party won 8.13 per cent of the popular vote in that election. The Greens ran on a relatively centrist platform and one economist, Lindsay Tedds from the University of Victoria, called it the most “realistic” among the three platforms presented to voters. Weaver endorsed policies like rolling medical service premiums (MSPs) into income taxes, and a comprehensive tolling system to reduce congestion. The party ran a candidate in every riding this election for the first time. A political party needs to win four seats to achieve official party status in B.C. But any significant jump in the number of Green seats in future elections will probably require electoral reform, said Harrison. A proportional electoral system, as opposed to the current first-past-the-post system, would likely mean more seats in the next election for smaller parties like the Green party, she explained.

turning ndp George Chow leads tight Vancouver-Fraserview race It’s been closely watched as a swing riding for the past few elections — but it took 16 years for the B.C. NDP to win in the southeast riding of Vancouver-Fraserview. As of press time, George Chow was leading the riding with 833 votes. Suzanne Anton won the

riding for the B.C. Liberals in 2013, narrowly beating NDP contender Gabriel Yiu by just 470 votes. Anton held the high-profile cabinet position of Attorney General and Minister of Justice under Premier Christy Clark. This time Anton faced Chow for the NDP. Both are former Vancouver city councillors. Jen St. Denis/Metro

The BC SPCA have made a public plea for help to give

an abused puppy a “fresh start.” According to the society, Stuffy — a seven-month-old Pomeranian — was recently confiscated by animal cruelty investigators after being found with two broken front legs. But now that he’s receiving treatment at a Maple Ridge animal hospital, the BC SPCA says it needs donors to help fund the more than $3,000

required for orthopedic sur- protection officer Eileen gery to heal its injuries. Drever. “Despite the pain “He’s such he’s been in, an adorable he’s so friendlittle guy. The society says the investigation into Stuffy’s circumstances remains ongoing. Once the puppy has surgery and has recovered, he will be put up for adoption, Drever said. In what was a razor-thin race right up to the 11th hour, pollsters had predicted that the high number of still-undecided voters would play a big role in Tuesday’s election. And as pollsters were reminded in 2013, when the surge of B.C. NDP support suddenly drained in the final day, the electorate can shift gears unexpectedly. “Some are going to make that decision closer to election day, and they may strategically vote for another party,” explained Forum Research president Lorne Bozinoff. Metro spoke with several who changed their vote this time. One of them was Fares Boulos, a former Bay Street investment banker who teaches at an international business management school. He has voted B.C. Liberal every election since voting for Gordon Campbell in the 1990s. “I agreed with them when they said, ‘We can keep the ship running steady, B.C.’s doing well and we can continue to do well — why would you want to take a risk?’” Boulos recalled. But this time, things are different. The last straw was the Globe and Mail’s exposé of lobbyists saying they gained access to B.C. politicians by donating, and the New York Times reporting B.C. was the “Wild West” of lax donation rules.

“If we have one more government or four years more where this thing is left to run amok like it has in the last four or five years, I think it’s going to be extremely detrimental,” he said. “This process appears to be entirely dominated by big money.” He couldn’t feel “at home” in the B.C. NDP, which is widely mistrusted in the business community. “But now I am willing to take that risk … if (Horgan) gets in we’re going to keep an eye on him — and if he goes crazy we’ll vote him out four years from now.” For Port Moody’s Victoria Parhar, who works in the housing sector, this election inspired a big change. She’s alternated between NDP and B.C. Liberals for several elections, and admires Clark. “I appreciate Christy’s contributions, especially as a woman in politics, I know there’s barriers to that,” she told Metro. “But I just don’t believe in her platform.” As a mother of four, her one big issue was education, and although she felt the NDP were “too close to the unions,” she “cannot forget” the teachers’ strike and that turned her off the Liberals. She liked the Greens’ ideas on boosting education spending and felt the other two parties were offering “little innovative” or compelling. “This year, I came the conclusion I’m voting Green,” she revealed, “because I just couldn’t vote for either of the other two parties.”

Langley Teen with fake gun causes brief voting station closure A polling station was briefly closed at a Langley high school Tuesday morning after a student was spotted in the hallway with a fake handgun. Aldergrove Community Senior Secondary School, a polling station in Tuesday’s

general provincial election, was placed on lockdown after a young man was seen in the school with a gun. RCMP quickly arrived at the school, found the boy and took him into custody. The handgun turned out to be a prop, used by the school’s drama department. Jeff Hodson/Metro

Brain injury causes impulse issues in rats science

Study could lead to better treatments for head trauma Wanyee Li

Metro | Vancouver UBC researchers have found that even mild brain injury can cause impulse control issues in rats. Rats with head trauma were unable to wait in order to receive a bigger reward, and instead opted for a small, immediate reward, the study found. The rats’ lack of impulse control lasted throughout the eightweek experiment, indicating it could be a chronic symptom of head trauma, persisting even after memory and motor functions return. “We saw that relatively mild brain injury can induce a longterm impulsive state,” said Cole Vonder Haar, lead author of the study. Eight weeks is about a tenth of a rat’s lifetime, he explained. His team tested the rats’ impulse control by offering them sugar pellets. Rats could choose to either receive one sugar pellet now or four sugar pellets later. Those that had suffered brain injuries chose the single sugar pellet more often. Researchers found that rats that were more likely to choose the single sugar pellet also more often also had higher levels of interleukin-12 in their brain tissue.

The experiment on rats demonstrates a chemical link between brain injury and addiction. waterloo region record

Hopefully, if that holds true for brain injury, it may also have relevance in fields like addiction. Cole Vonder Haar

That finding could be the missing link in explaining addictive behaviour in people who have suffered brain injuries.

“One of the things that has been most heavily linked to addiction is problems with impulse control,” said Vonder Haar. “People are seeing increased rates of addiction in populations with brain injury,” he said. But scientists have not been able to definitively say brain injury can cause addictive behaviour because people who are more likely to have brain injury could simply be the type of people who have less impulse control in the first place. This experiment on rats

demonstrates a chemical link between brain injury and addiction. Vonder Haar hopes his findings will lead to new treatment options for head-injury victims as well as addictions patients. “The next step would be to go in and start to treat those impulse control problems. We will look into whether manipulation of interleukin-12 could improve function or not.” “Hopefully, if that holds true for brain injury, it may also have relevance in fields like addiction.”

Millennials to unveil housing solutions Jen St. Denis

Metro | Vancouver For months, a group of 30 young people under the age of 30 has been getting creative about Vancouver’s dire housing problem, and they’re ready to share their ideas at an event tonight. “We’ve been hosting … a pop-up think and do tank for 30 people under 30 to really engage and figure out how they can take action and build solutions in their communities,” said Tesicca Truong, a 23-year-old Vancouver consultant who cofounded an organization called

CityHive. Mayor Gregor Robertson will speak at the event Wednesday night from 7-9 p.m. at SFU Woodwards. “So really moving away from just waiting for the government and big institutions (to act).” The projects to be unveiled at the launch event include: • Empty Nesters: pairs elderly people who want to age in place but have empty bedrooms with young people looking for less expensive housing in return for providing elder care; • A platform that helps connect landlords and renters and increases trust and builds knowledge for both landlords and renters — especially targeted towards

inexperienced, first-time renters; • 100 Small Actions: break down small steps millennials can take to learn more about housing challenges and then take action; • Flat Form: similar to Airbnb, but for students or artists to sublet their apartments while they are travelling or working in a different city; and • YoPro: a young professionals’ network to advocate for young people in the city with actions such as “a day without young professionals” to show the challenges Vancouver could face if the housing crisis continues on its current trajectory. CityHive, which aims to en-

gage young people in city-building, has partnered with a Toronto-based organization called Youthful Cities. The event is sponsored by Vancity Credit Union, The McConnell Foundation, the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. and Generation Squeeze, who are offering a $5,000 prize to the project that gets the most votes tonight. Each of the six teams then plan to continue to work on their idea with one of the event sponsors with the hope of making it work in the real world. For more information visit www.cityhive.com.

Tent city residents vow to fight injunction housing problem

Homeless say they feel safe but court action is being taken Jen St. Denis

Metro | Vancouver The City of Vancouver has gone to court to seek an injunction to remove homeless people who are camping in a vacant lot at 950 Main St., but residents are vowing to fight eviction. “On this site right now, everybody feels safe, everybody looks out for one another,” a tent city resident called Crystal told Metro. the street — and some shelters, they’re just not safe.” Vancouver’s latest protest tent city set up on April 24, an action activists and homeless people said was necessary. Homeless numbers have risen sharply over the past three years, while the region contends with a deadly opioid overdose crisis that shows no sign of slowing. A previous tent city at 58 W. Hastings St. operated for six months in 2016 before the city obtained a court injunction to shut it down. But the city-owned lot is the future site of a social housing development planned by the Lu’Ma Native Housing Society, said the city, and a development application is already underway. That application was filed on April 19, and proposes a six-storey building with 26 social housing units for aboriginal people who are homeless or at risk of

The project will go before the city’s development permit board on June 24, but the city is arguing the tent city is preventing soil testing and drilling work that needs to be done now. “None of this can occur while that site is occupied and these concerns have been relayed to the site’s leaders,” according to a press release from the city. “I knew they had plans to build housing on the site, but

it’s been empty for decades so I didn’t think they were in any particular hurry to build it,” said Maria Wallstam, of Alliance Against Displacement, There are currently 50 people living at the site, and they will have no alternative but to return to living on the street if the city shuts down the camp, Wallstam said. She added the camp had provided a community for people and when one resident overdosed, his life was saved when others nearby quickly called 911. “I do want housing for the 50 residents that are here, plus the over 200 people that are homeless in the Vancouver area,” Crystal said. (There were 539 unsheltered homeless people in Vancouver when the city did its last homeless count in May 2016.) “I’ve been to quite a few shelters and it’s just not somewhere I want to be.”

Flood forcing residents to ‘discover our neighbours’ As Liz Smart sat in a canoe outside her Montreal-area home, surrounded by several feet of water, she joked about having to make sure her husband’s ashes were kept on high ground. “I know it’s morbid but it’s the truth,” she mused in an interview Tuesday. “He built this house 10 years ago — in three months. He was a master plumber. I was like, ‘Out of all the times I need you here!’ He could have come in handy.” It took only a few hours Sunday morning for the water in Smart’s basement in DeuxMontagnes to reach just below the first floor. Nonetheless, she was in relatively good spirits being transported around the neighbourhood by her friend James Taylor in his rented canoe.

“When my husband died (a year ago) I was very alone; it was a very lonely time,” Smart said. “This is a collective. People are smiling. They are putting things into perspective — your wealth is your health.” Not far away, the water was acting like a moat around

Sylvie Briere’s flooded stone house but that didn’t prevent her from emphasizing the positive. “The solidarity is incredible,” she said. “We have discovered our neighbours.” Briere said she and her neighbours spent Saturday night together building a wall

of sand with the help of concrete blocks that were transported to the end of her street by another resident. By 5 a.m. Sunday she was awoken by a knock at her door and the news the water had burst over their makeshift dam. “There is no one to blame,”

she said, her voice quivering. “When this is over we all decided we’re going to have a block party. My stepson has a food truck and he’s going to give everyone ice cream.” Roughly 130 homes are flooded in the community of 20,000, prompting the mayor to declare a state of emergency on Monday that allows municipal authorities to buy supplies quickly without having to go through the normal tendering process. Deux-Montagnes director general Benoit Ferland said “there was nothing we could do” to save homes from the water. “We laid sandbags very high and the water passed over,” he said. “It would have taken a Berlin Wall to save us from the river.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Ouster comes amid probe of Russia’s election meddling U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey Tuesday, ousting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the midst of an investigation into whether Trump’s campaign had ties to Russia’s election meddling. In a letter to Comey, Trump said the firing was necessary to restore “public trust and confidence” in the FBI. Comey has come under intense scrutiny in recent months for h i s

role in an investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s email practices, including a pair of letters he sent to Congress on the matter in the closing days of last year’s election. Trump made no mention of Comey’s role in the Clinton investigation. But the president did assert that Comey informed him “on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation.” Tuesday’s stunning announcement came shortly after the FBI corrected a sentence in Comey’s sworn testimony on Capitol Hill last week. Comey told lawmakers that Huma Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Clinton, had sent “hundreds and thousands” of emails to her husband’s laptop, including some with classified information. On Tuesday, the FBI said in a two-page letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee that only

“a small number” of the thousands of emails found on the laptop had been forwarded there while most had simply been backed up from electronic devices. Most of the email chains

on the laptop containing classified information were not the result of forwarding, the FBI said. Comey, 56, was nominated by President Barack Obama for the FBI post in 2013 to a 10-year term. Praised for his independence and integrity, Comey has spent three decades in law enforcement and has been no stranger to

controversy. Before the past months’ controversies, Comey was perhaps best known for a remarkable 2004 standoff with top officials in the George W. Bush administration over a federal domestic surveillance program. As the deputy attorney general, Comey rushed to the hospital bed of Attorney General John Ashcroft to physically stop White House officials in their bid to get his ailing boss to reauthorize a secret no-warrant wiretapping program. Comey described

the incident in 2007 testimony to Congress, explaining that he believed the spy program put in place after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks was legally questionable. When he learned that Andrew Card, the president’s chief of staff, and Alberto Gonzales, the White House counsel, were heading to Ashcroft’s hospital room despite Ashcroft’s wife’s instructions that there be no visitors, Comey told Congress, Comey beat them there and watched as Ashcroft turned them away. “That night was probably the most difficult night of my professional life,” Comey said. carbon tax

Program to mimic Alberta’s

The federal government’s plan to impose a carbon tax on provinces that don’t do it themselves is expected to mimic the Alberta carbon program, including rebate payments sent directly to lowand middle-income individuals. A source who has seen the plan says the technical paper outlining Ottawa’s proposal will be released next week, seven months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told provinces they’d have until 2018 to implement a price on carbon or have Ottawa do it for them. The Alberta model applies a tax on carbon generated by burning most transportation and heating fuels, except for those used on farms. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Two wrecks of migrant ships in the Mediterranean have claimed as many as 245 lives, including those of at least five children, according to survivor accounts given to UN agencies and authorities in Sicily, where dozens of rescued migrants were taken. The dinghy started deflating on one end, the passengers quickly shifted their positions in the boat, and the craft tipped over, authorities said, based on numerous survivors’ descriptions. The dinghy wasn’t equipped with any distress signalling

JESSICA ALLEN ON SUPERHERO BRANDING

Diversity opportunity in public newspaper funds

Here are five Wonder Woman partnerships worth considering

Vicky Mochama

Warner Bros. has joined forces with a nutrition bar called thinkThin to promote its upcoming Wonder Woman film. I know what you’re thinking: Sure, the studio has had marketing tie-ins with other superheroes on the payroll — Batman got chocolate strawberry cereal — but aligning the greatest heroine with an absurdly named diet snack is outrageous and sexist. Not for me. This is the #thinspiration I need for bathing suit season. I say this is a chance for brands to make some money while simultaneously empowering women to lose weight and also aid them in just being better at being women.

Invisible airline seats

2

Delta and United have recently received a lot of flak for overselling their seats. Even though every airline does it, here’s their chance for redemption: market “invisible seats,” like the kind you’d find on Wonder Woman’s invisible jet. These seats exist only in your imagination. Instead of passengers being dragged off a flight or threatened with having their children taken away by social services, flight attendants can just point to their boarding pass and say, “You’re a superhero, too.”

3

Saving shoes

Wonder Woman is an Amazon. The ancient Greeks used to depict Amazon battles on everything from pottery to architectural friezes, like the one on the Temple of Athena Nike on the Athenian Acropolis. Nike, are you listening? I’m thinking kneehigh, shock-resistant sneakers that absorb the emotional pain of the gender pay gap.

Those are extremely short star-spangled shorts, Wonder Woman. Three words: “bikini waxing kit.” One with no soothing after-lotions because no pain, no gain, as no woman has ever said after a wax but with Wonder Woman pictured on the box I bet it will sting less.

This one is almost too easy because “Wonder” is literally in their name already: Wonder Bread. All they have to do is introduce a gluten-free loaf because last time I checked, superheroes, especially the handful of female ones, don’t eat carbs.

Crystals

Superman’s nemesis is the mineral Kryptonite. I say Wonder Woman should have a mineral — no, make that a crystal — but it makes her stronger and wards off negative energy because women and Spencer Pratt love crystals. Wear Wonder Woman’s rose quartz, or maybe citrine, around your neck for health, wellness, and a clear head. Because you can’t fight the patriarchy if you’re thinking about what the hell you should cook for dinner. Don’t forget to breathe.

If our institutions won’t take diversity seriously, then it’s fitting they be forced to if Ottawa gives them money. Last week, the federal government issued an ultimatum to universities participating in the Canada Research Chairs program. Within the next three years, schools must meet diversity targets or face funding cuts. Currently, universities underperform in awarding chairs to four designated groups: women, people with disabilities, Indigenous people and visible minorities. Schools have made some progress. 2017 data shows universities met targets of 15 per cent and one per cent for visible minorities and Indigenous people, respectively. But, as federal Science Minister Kirsty Duncan told the Globe and Mail: “It’s been a decade, and there simply hasn’t been enough progress.” Thus, the ultimatum. It should work that way with newspapers too. Some publishers are asking the Canadian government to assist the industry with its struggles and others are suggesting Ottawa step up its print advertising budget. This is an opportunity. The carrot-and-stick approach might work for more than one industry lacking diversity. Canada’s print media could stand to feel some pressure.

If the federal government opts to assist the press, there should be strings attached – on diversity. It’s a truism that Canadian media is mostly white. But it’s only axiomatic because the data is non-existent: the majority of print publications do not publish diversity data. Unlike print media, the nation’s broadcasters are bound by the Employment Equity Act. With varying degrees of transparency and consistency, they report their diversity efforts. Print media has been hesitant to tackle diversity despite there being ample evidence of its benefits. It would not infringe the free speech of the press to join the rest of the nation’s media in both making a profit and reflecting the nation it serves. There are countless studies showing the value of diversity. A 2015 study from McKinsey, a global consulting firm, found gender-diverse companies are 15 per cent more likely to financially outperform their competitors. For ethnically diverse companies it’s 35 per cent. There is a clear return on investment. For the most part, it seems universities are welcoming Ottawa’s demands. Selfregulation has only gotten them so far, and it’s not far at all. The academy and the press are valuable members of our society and democracy. While universities have made steps towards diversity, they can’t do it alone. The same is true for print media.

Malts for mom: Time to close Whisky Gap For whisky companies, Father’s Day is Second Christmas. Sales teams position their fancy single malt or smooth blend as the must-have gift for dad. Meanwhile, mom gets a DustBuster. That’s just not fair. It’s time to close the Whisky Gap. Here are four reasons why whisky is better than a vacuum for Mother’s Day gifting. torstar news service

Hold the girly drinks nonsense

Although the spirits and cocktail world is often divided into girly drinks and manly ones, there’s no earthly reason for it. Men can metabolize more alcohol than women, not different types. There’s no more alcohol in brown spirits than there is in vodka or gin. And a five-ounce glass of Pinot Grigio contains the same amount of alcohol as a one-ounce pour of liquor. Gooderham & Worts is a tribute to the whisky once made at Toronto’s legendary distillery, which was once the largest in the world.

Moms already spend on malts

Sales statistics suggest that more than a third of whisky consumers are women, maybe even two-fifths. So, there’s a pretty decent chance that mom is already a part of the whiskydrinking demographic but has to buy her own, while dad gets bottles for free. That’s just like being charged more for dry cleaning or haircuts. Toki, from Japan’s House of Suntory, is delicious goodness.

Every palate can be trained

Subverting the lazy sales pitches

Men and women have, essentially, the same physiological taste mechanisms. Most taste scientists agree that experience matters more than biology: if you can teach yourself to like bitter greens, you can learn to like just about anything. Few Spirits all feature different images from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Whisky for men and vodka martinis for women is totally arbitrary, like the way books at the airport are divided into shelves with pink covers decorated with cakes and shoes versus all the serious, hardcover black-and-gold business books. Whenever we have a chance to subvert that kind of nonsense, we should. The Dalmore 12 is sweet deliciousness.

The most Instagrammable coffee in the world is here... just hold it at the right angle

#CoffeeInACone: It’s part of the new generation of novelty snacks and drinks engineered not just for taste, texture, and mouth-watering appearance, but shareability. It’s billed as “the most Instagrammable coffee in the world,” but unlike most socialmedia-ready coffee creations, it comes from a country where coffee is actually grown: South Africa. The patent-pending confection, which is just what it sounds like — a coffee drink in a purpose-built waffle cone — is the brainchild of 30-year-old South African entrepreneur Dayne Levinrad. It’s celebrating its Canadian debut at Balzac’s Coffee Roasters in Toronto on Thursday. Levinrad says plans are in the works to expand to more cities. Levinrad, who has spent years as a consultant to coffee shops in Australia, Brazil and Los Angeles, moved home to South Africa and was casting around for a “new and exciting way of a bringing people to the door.” Recalling the passionate love people have for ice cream cones, and inspired by the perennial success of food mash-ups like the cronut, he hit on the idea to combine coffee and cone.

“I wanted ... to play on nostalgia and childhood,” he said. “It becomes quite a decadent experience because the (melting) chocolate mixes into the drink.” If you think that sounds like a potential melty mess, you’d be right. After a great deal of trial and error, Levinrad landed on a blend of four different chocolates to coat the inside of the cone and prevent leaks.

With Weil’s help it became a social media sensation. Interest in the drink — 50 million total online impressions, across all platforms, according to Levinrad — has far outpaced its availability. Just over 4,000 posters have used the hashtag #coffeeinacone on Instagram, most of whom appear to be taking pictures of themselves with the treat in hand. Coffee in a cone is avail-

I wanted to play on nostalgia and childhood. It becomes quite a decadent experience. Dayne Levinrad

Any creamy hot drink, such as a latte, cappuccino, matcha or hot chocolate, will work. The one exception is plain hot drip coffee, which tends to melt the chocolate a little too fast. The beverage has to be slurped up within 10 minutes before structural failure becomes a concern. And make sure to hold it at a 45-degree angle: Otherwise the drink will pour our over your wrist and onto the floor. Coffee in a cone was born last year at the Grind, Levinrad’s Johannesburg café. Shortly after its launch, it caught the eye of Aviv Weil at the African chapter of Creative Shop, Facebook’s small-business support program.

able at select cafes in Hong Kong and the U.K., and will soon be in Australia. When the treat was featured on the CNN website in May 2016, Levingrad said he was still making the cones in his garage with help from his mother. He’s since employed 30 local women to hand-turn the waffle cones at a factory in South Africa. Levinrad loves that the product already has “fans all over the world, “ even if they haven’t yet gotten the chance to try it for themselves. “People rally behind a good story,” he said. “(Maybe it will) damage the big retail gods who normally trump people like us.”

LOVE IT • Plenty of passenger space • Driving dynamics • Standard active safety features LEAVE IT • No all-wheel drive • Tiny cargo compartment • Few infotainment features

It’s hard to believe, considering the automaker practically pioneered the segment, that Toyota waited this long to introduce something smaller than its RAV4. More surprising still, the 2018 Toyota C-HR wasn’t even planned as a Toyota and was supposed to hit the North American market bearing a Scion badge. That the C-HR was initially intended to be Scion’s first crossover is useful in explaining its looks. The C-HR’s slight exterior proportions don’t, however, result in a cramped cabin. The vast majority of space has been

handout

dedicated to the passenger area. However, the C-HR comes up short in the cargo compartment. Underpinning the C-HR is a variation of the architecture that is shared by the likes of the current Prius and the upcoming redesigned Camry. With plenty of

torsional rigidity and a low center of gravity, the C-HR features a taut chassis that is atypical of a crossover. Add in wheels that sit about as close to the corners as possible and actual steering feel and feedback, and the C-HR is a nimble package.

Considering how engaging and enjoyable the C-HR can be on a twisty road, the engine propelling the C-HR is an underwhelming one. Also somewhat disappointing is the crossover’s official fuel economy ratings. With only two trims available

— XLE and XLE Premium — the subcompact crossover starts at $24,690 and comes with a great suite of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. Also along for the ride is a dual-zone automatic climate control system and backup camera, and a standard seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Smartphone interfacing systems Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t included just yet. The infotainment system also lacks satellite radio, though Bluetooth audio streaming is built in. The Premium trim brings the price to $26,290, and adds a few features, including 18-inch alloy wheels, blind spot monitoring and Smart Key with push-button start, to round out the Scionesque trim walk. Ibini signed through 2018 with club option for ’19

Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson expects Bernie Ibini to offer something different up front. Fans will just have to wait a little while to see the club’s newest signing in action. The Whitecaps announced Tuesday they have acquired the 24-year-old winger/forward from Club Brugge KV of Belgium’s top division. “Young, athletic,” Robinson said of Ibini after practice. “He’s got a huge upside.” Ibini has spent most of his career in Australia, having just wrapped up a second straight loan spell at A-League side Sydney FC where he helped the club win both the regular-season and playoff titles. He played in Sydney’s recent semifinal victory, but missed

Robinson said the injury isn’t thought to be serious. “An exciting young player who’s got power, strength, is direct,” said Robinson. “He’ll fit

into the group very well.” The deal for the Australian international was agreed to prior to the close of Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window on Monday. Ibini’s contract with the Whitecaps runs through 2018, with a club option for the 2019 season. Vancouver had $300,000 US

in allocation money left over from the trade that sent Kekuta Manneh to the Columbus Crew for Tony Tchani, which no doubt helped make the transfer possible. The six-foot-two, 195-pound Nigerian-born Ibini was property of Brugge, but never played a game for the club after breaking his leg in pre-season in 2015. While Ibini can line up wide on either flank, Robinson said he expects him to suit up predominantly as a striker, either alongside Fredy Montero or when the smaller Colombian designated player needs a rest. “He can fit multiple positions, but he’s different to what we’ve got,” said the coach. “That’s why we’re excited to see him.” The Canadian Press

This might be the most painful defeat as Lundqvist turned 35 earlier this season, and there has been season-long speculation that general manager Jeff Gorton may attempt to either trade or buy out veteran defencemen Dan Girardi and Marc Staal in an attempt to get younger and free up salary cap space. Captain Erik Karlsson scored and added an assist to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 4-2 win in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal on Tuesday night, eliminating the New York Rangers with a 4-2 series victory. The Senators have reached the Eastern Conference final for the third time in franchise history, making it that deep into the playoffs in 2003 and 2007. They now await the winner of the Penguins-Capitals semifinal. Game 7 of that series is Wednesday at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. Mike Hoffman, Mike Stone and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored for the Senators, and Craig Anderson stopped 37 of 39 shots. Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider scored for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves. For the second time in three years, the Rangers’ season ended on home ice. And for the 22nd

It’s all in The Stars Your daily horoscope by Francis Drake Aries March 21 - April 20 Issues regarding money, cash flow and earnings might come to a head today. Likewise, discussions about an inheritance or shared property also might be difficult. Fortunately, these matters will be resolved quickly.

Cancer June 22 - July 23 Parents must be patient with their kids today if they want to avoid hissy fits and meltdowns. Likewise, romantic partners will have difficulty with each other. That’s because this is a Full Moon day.

Taurus April 21 - May 21 Today the only Full Moon that is opposite your sign all year is taking place. This will produce tension between you and partners and close friends. Have patience.

Leo July 24 - Aug. 23 Some Full Moons are easier than others. This is not one of them. You might feel pulled between the demands of home and family versus the demands of your career.

Gemini May 22 - June 21 Be patient with co-workers today, because everyone can feel the energy of today’s Full Moon. This makes people overreact and be too emotional.

Virgo Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 Pay attention to what you say and do because this is an accident-prone day for you. An accident could be caused by your own emotional distractions.

Libra Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 Keep an eye on your money and your possessions today, because something might create problems for you. This is a Full Moon day. Forewarned is forearmed.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 Be tactful and diplomatic in order to avoid difficulties with friends and members of groups today. People are on edge because of the Full Moon energy.

Scorpio Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Today the only Full Moon in your sign all year is taking place. Quite likely, this will create stress between you and others. Stay chill.

Aquarius Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Avoid arguments with bosses and parents today, especially female authority figures. This is a particularly challenging Full Moon for your sign.

Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 You might feel unhappy about something going on behind the scenes, but you feel you cannot speak out. This means you’re doing a slow boil. This feeling will be gone in 24 hours. (Whew!)

Pisces Feb. 20 - March 20 Be wise and avoid controversial subjects today — including politics, religion and racial issues — because people are emotionally upset and overheated today. It’s a Full Moon, and it’s a tough one.
