Celebrating
in Tampa Bay
Spring Has Arrived.
It’s a season to get outside and enjoy area farmers market, film and music festivals, and food and wine events. It’s a time when things come alive before the heat forces us back inside. Enjoy all the events that the Tampa Bay area has to offer.
In METROPeople, meet Mike Ingold who recently started his own guitar making business. A talented musician is following his passion and dream by combining his woodworking skills and love for guitars. It’s never too late to make dreams a reality.
METRO is out in the community supporting many charitable events. We have photo pictorials of several fashion events including the Tampa Museum of Art’s CITY and Bespoke & Co. Signature Event. Both events offered spectacular evenings of fashion. If you missed it, mark your calendar for Morgan Auto Group Charity Polo Classic, which is always a great time with colorful fashions, great food and drinks along with a professional polo match raising funds for dozens of local non profits.
We went on location and in the studio for a Spring fashion shoot with the talented photographer Brian James. Stylist Valerie Romas gathered fashions from Deborah Kent’s, z•aa dress up studio and Dillard’s in spring colors of pinks, blues and yellows. Hair and makeup stylist Monique McLaughlin created stunning looks on the models.
As we gear up for spring travel, two local historic hotels that originally opened in the 1920s have undergone renovations and are ready to welcome guests for the season in Historic Hospitality. Whether you want a beach escape or a city vibe, The Don Cesar Hotel or The Vinoy St. Pete Resort & Golf Club will welcome you through their iconic entrances.
In METRO Home + Design, we feature condominium designs on both sides of Tampa Bay. In At Home, McKinley Rose Interiors showcases a modern, coastal elegance at Hyde Park House. The design is warm and cozy, but reflects a sophisticated style. In the Home Tour of the Bliss condo project by Rob Bowen of Bowen Design Group, Bowen blends Old World charm with modern design. The space includes textures of rich fabrics, metals and graphics, reflecting the metropolitan surroundings.

IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT SOUND
Meet Mike Ingold, Ingold Audio Design Co.
Mike Ingold’s love of music, woodworking and fabrication have finally all come together in a new business venture with the opening of Ingold Audio Design Co. earlier this year.
Born and raised in the Detroit metro area, Ingold received a BFA from Grand Valley State University and a MFA degree from Kendall College of Art and Design. For the last 10 years, Ingold as been working as a Professor of Art and Design and the Wood Shop Technician for the University of Tampa while continuing to design, build, and modify guitars in his spare time. While professionally Ingold’s focus has been seated in the field of Art and Design, specifically woodworking, he has been playing, recording, modifying, building, and collecting guitars since he was in middle-school. In his free time from work, Ingold can always be found tinkering with his guitar gear; swapping
out hardware, modifying circuits, experimenting with signal path, all in search of the (un-gettable) “perfect” sound.
METRO: What made you decide to open your own business?
INGOLD: Historically, I had always seen my interest in guitar as a hobby or side-project, but a few years ago I began posting images of the things I was working on in some guitar forums online. To my surprise, my work received a ton of positive feedback and interest. Designing and building guitars combines all of my interests and skill-sets into one perfect endeavor.
M: What inspires you and why did you want to make guitars?
I: Having been educated in the field of art and design, I have always been inspired by artists who take risks and operate outside the boundaries of popularity and acceptance. I have an immense respect for
those who aren’t afraid to push the avant guard and question the norm. My favorite artist is Marcel Duchamp, who pioneered the idea that art can be anything that the artist says is art. For me, the guitar has always been a symbol of experimentation, rebellion, and freedom.
M: How long does it take to make a guitar?
I: I am a one-man show and every part of every instrument that comes out of my shop has been touched by me. It is faster to work in small production runs of three or four instruments at a time, but speed is not necessarily the ultimate goal. I actually prefer it when I get one-off custom orders so I can really focus on one guitar at a time and make it a singularly perfect object. Production can take as little as a week or as long as six weeks.
M: What is your favorite type of music?
I: I tend to lean into musicians and groups that have an experimental component to their sound, which can be true of music in many different genres.
M: Where is the best place to watch live music in Tampa Bay?
I: Our city is lucky to have a ton of great music venues, and I’m lucky enough to know a few of the amazing folks who help run them. I love what’s happening at the Floridian Social Club (formerly the State Theater) in St. Pete right now. Jannus is always a great place to see a show. My favorite place to both see and play music in Tampa has to be Crowbar in Ybor.
M: What do you like to do in your free time?
B: I’m a family man who loves spending time with my fiancé and our three kids. We are all movie-buffs, so we do a lot of family movie nights and still love going to the theater when we can. Aside from family, it’s all music. I am always playing in at least one, if not several bands in the Tampa Bay area. My next gig will be at Hooch and Hive on Mother’s day, where some local musicians and I will be playing a cover set of Depeche Mode’s greatest hits for all the moms.
—— Ronda M. ParagMUSIC FOR ALL 12th Annual Gasparilla Music Festival
Presented by Coppertail Brewing Co. the Gasparilla Music Festival is set to take to the stages over two days April 29 – 30, 2023 at Curtis Hixon Park. Headliners recently announced include hip-hop duo Run The Jewels comprised of Killer Mike and El-P. The other headliner on Saturday night includes Canadian electro-funk duo and Grammy Award® Nominees, Chromeo, who recently released a new album and performances at Coachella. The festival closes out on Sunday with American Rock Bank, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, which pays tribute to Grateful Dead. performances including surprise guests and high-energy jams. The schedule is jammed packed with other national and local acts including Cannons, Rising Appalachia, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Flipturn and The 502s.
“It’s a transitional year for GMF as we adapt to the challenges of rapidly growing downtown development,” said Melanie Rouse, GMF Board President. “We’re looking forward to celebrating one last year in Curtis Hixon with a sensational lineup. We’re very excited to establish our new home at Julian B. Lane Park in 2024 where we can grow for years to come and remain an integral part of the downtown landscape.”
New this year is extension of music up and down along the Riverwalk from the Straz Center for the Performing Arts to Sparkman Wharf. This will give musical fans the opportunity to catch live music in various venues along the Riverwalk. Festival goers will have a variety of ways to move up and down venue sites with the Pirate Water Taxi, TECO Streetcar trolley, E-scooters, bicycles and by walking. Bike riding is encouraged with an expanded Bike Valet area and is free for concert goers. Returning again this year is the popular Silent Disco and the amazing food vendors set up at Calle Cocina.
Gasparilla Music Festival is a nonprofit event that serves as an immersive experience celebrating the best of Tampa culture through music, food, fashion, art and, of course, award winning beers. Musical education is supported through its Recycled Tunes program which provides instruments to students, who otherwise would not have access to them.

Like a splash across the sky, Spring 2023 arrives on the runway with colors that are painted by an artistic hand. Wild brush strokes of blue, pink and yellow create art in the form of fashion. A natural unity in nature’s color and collaboration.
Have you seen her dressed in blue?
See the sky in front of you — a cobalt blue, mixed back to pops of celedon and citron, feels so fresh and fun. Whether it be fringe or herringbone, this deep hue compliments every color in our collection.
Have you seen her dressed in pink?
Fiery, strong and still — fuschia soars high with red by its side. The splendor of this color combination takes on a softer feel when colors fade into each other-an ombre dress perhaps, yet packs a punch when shown as a bold tropical print.
Have you seen her dressed in yellow?
Born of the sun — it radiates warmth against a giant palette of blue. Burning its path through the sky, orange follows close behind. We love it featured in a playful, one-shoulder romper that can be worn in a casual or formal fashion, depending on its accessories.
She shoots her colours all around. Like a sunset going down. She’s a rainbow.

H ISTORIC HOSPITALITY
In Tampa Bay
By Ronda M. ParagBe a tourist in your own hometown and discover, or perhaps even rediscover, some favorites places to stay, eat, or even, play. The Tampa Bay area is home to two classic and beloved properties that have undergone renovation and transformation in the last several years. The Don CeSar Hotel on St. Petersburg Beach is celebrating its 95th anniversary this year, and completed a remodel and transformation that was finished in 2021. The Vinoy® St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club in downtown St. Pete boasts iconic waterfront views and is located within walking distance to great restaurants, museums and nightlife, and has been undergoing renovations to bring grandeur back to the iconic hotel. The Vinoy renovations should be complete later this year.
The Vinoy® St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club
Originally opened on New Year’s Eve in 1925 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Vinoy® St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club is the only historic luxury resort on Florida’s west coast that boasts 13.5 acres of idyllic waterfront property, a private 72-slip marina, 18-hole golf course on the
exclusive Snell Isle, tennis complex and fitness center. Known for its signature pink façade, Mediterranean Revival style and old-Florida hospitality, the 362-room resort is emerging from a thoughtful renovation and rebrand, joining Marriott’s renowned Autograph Collection.

The iconic pink hotel blends modern elegance with Mediterranean Revival architecture in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, with over 60,000 square feet of spectacular indoor/outdoor event space, innovative restaurants and a day spa. Recently, local boutique Sunni Spencer opened in the Vinoy lobby area to provide shoppers with a selection of contemporary labels including Cult Gaia, LoveShackFancy, James Perse and Stoney Clover Lane, along with exclusive totes from Poolside Bags that are custom-made for The Vinoy. “My brand is inspired by my travels across the world and expressing the carefree
The new, sophisticated aesthetic reflects The Vinoy’s timeless glamour and tips its hat to a longstanding legacy. The Vinoy offers a combination of elegant rooms and suites that have undergone updates with new wood flooring, streamlined crown molding, and dramatic fixtures that create a sense of relaxed luxury. The bathrooms in most room types will also have walk-in marble showers.
The ballrooms were the first spaces to be unveiled as part of the resort’s comprehensive renovation that also includes the legendary veranda, porte

cochère, main lobby, guest rooms, spa, and restaurants. The Vinoy’s transformation will shine new light on the resort as a grande dame of Floridian hospitality.
If walls could talk, The Vinoy’s would have endless stories to share thanks to a rich history that includes hosting U.S. presidents, celebrities and athletes, and even serving as military housing in the 1940s.
The Don CeSar Hotel
For a relaxing and peaceful beach getaway, head to The Don CeSar Hotel, also known as the Pink Palace® on St. Pete Beach. Opened at the height of the Great Gatsby era in 1928, The Don CeSar is celebrating its 95th Anniversary this year.
The revamped Vinoy pool terrace will exude old Florida glamour, with stylish cabanas, bespoke sun loungers and a new pool restaurant and bar adding to the existing Paul’s Landing, making it an enticing area within the resort to relax and soak up the sun.
The National Historic Landmark hotel is reminiscent of a Mediterraneanstyle castle with 277 guest rooms, including 36 luxurious suites. The guest room décor incorporate a beach-inspired design using elements such as wicker, whitewashed headboards and airy and blush tones reflective of the hotel facade’s signature pink.
Bar & Lookout and the Lobby Bar at the hotel’s epicenter. The Vinoy® Resort & Golf Club has recently been named the top hotel in St. Petersburg by U.S. News & World Report. The Vinoy is a Gold Badge winner for 2023 having placed in the top 10 percent of all ranked luxury hotels in the country. This accolade comes ahead of the historic resort’s ongoing renovations, which will establish a new, sophisticated aesthetic that will reflect The Vinoy’s timeless glamor and tips its hat to a longstanding legacy.
Set upon the white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, the hotel offers six restaurants and lounges: the award-winning Maritana, Society Table, Uncle Andy’s Market, The Rowe Bar, Beacon Pool

Shop That Vibe
By Ronda M. ParagAs millennials begin to settle into their newlypurchased homes, the task of furnishing them comes down to one question — what’s the vibe? Sure, there’s plenty of big box furniture stores catering to fit every budget, but millennials aren’t exactly the same shoppers as Gen X. They aren’t looking for cookie cutter rooms where everything looks like it was purchased in one place. No, these shoppers are all about building a mood. Creating spaces where they can drink Negronis and eat cheeseboards while photographing it all for Instagram.
So how does an independent furniture shop stand out? Answer: Curated Bespoke and Vintage pieces.
While the Wayfairs and RHs of the world compete for get-it-now designs that lack personality, local retailer Clayton Gray Home sources heirloom-quality pieces like imported Moroccan rugs, African carved wood stools, local plaster art and vintage crystal glassware. While the shop does include some newer products from brand names Palecek, Made Goods and Arteriors, owner Wendy Garraty says it’s all about blending the new and sourced pieces to create a final look.
“You never want someone to look at your home and know exactly which store every piece came from,” says Wendy Garraty, owner of Clayton Gray Home. “That’s why our customers love shopping with us. We work with a variety of vendors and carefully curate the whole look for them. They shop at Clayton Gray Home because it feels good — like a place they want to live in.”
Designing with antiques and vintage items isn’t necessarily a new concept. Then again, Clayton Gray Home isn’t selling grandma’s old china. When you have expert designers sourcing all the items and pulling together the look for you, you’re no longer shopping for vintage or new pieces. You’re shopping for a vibe. M

Local Tampa Bay Dentist Creates Custom Artwork “Goatavious”
By Ronda M. ParagAs a dentist with his own great smile and a keen sense of humor, Dr. Ron O’Neal has been helping his patients perfect their smiles for over 20 years. Dr. O’Neal has always had a flair for interior design creating his own dental offices with unique items in an eclectic style. It’s contemporary, casual and comforting, yet looks nothing like an ordinary dental office. Lately, Dr. O’Neal has discovered his artistic talents through creating his own custom artwork called Goatavious. Initially started as a joke, O’Neal said that he wanted to obtain an emotional support goat named “Goatavious,” the likes of which would drop horns and lay a gentle reminder to those that had cast
shade and untruths during opportune moments of struggle. “Although, I never obtained a goat, I hear they now utilize them for yoga,” says O’Neal.
“I have always had a passion for art and the creative process,” says O’Neal. “Creating with my hands as of late with wood, canvas, plaster and acrylic has become a creative outlet and place where I could think and reflect. In a world so filled with technology and screens, it provides me with an outlet to simply check out and work on my art and ultimately me.”
“Art is a cathartic type of therapist in my own life, devoid of any and all pre misconceptions. It is a time to let your mind wander and imagination soar,”
says O’Neal. “It provides you with an opportunity to be bold, a safe place to be vulnerable, a chance to be humbled, and in the face of anything, most importantly, be you.”
Goatavious art has been featured at Five Deuces Gallery in St. Petersburg and House of Shadows in South Tampa.
“Art for me is like life in that it teaches lessons of inclusivity instead of exclusivity,” says O’Neal. “We as humans, artists, and observers all have the basic desire to be heard, be valued, be loved and be our true self without judgment.” M

Modern Coastal Elegance at Hyde Park House
By Mary Lou Janson Photograhy by Danielle Bradley, Karen Wernert StudioDesigned to display stunning views of Bayshore Boulevard’s sparkling waterfront, the tree-lined neighborhoods of Hyde Park and downtown Tampa’s dynamic skyline, Hyde Park House enables its residents to enjoy iconic images of their community from the comfort of spacious condominiums boasting high ceilings, multiple balconies and lots of natural light.
Residential floor plans feature floor-to-ceiling windows and wall-to-wall sliding glass doors that beautifully frame those unobstructed, captivating views.
“The windows are the art,” said Kristen McKinlay who, along with business partner Melanie Rose, recently designed the interior of one of the new development’s units.
“Whether you are looking out from the living or dining room or standing on any of the balconies, you feel like you are captain of a cruise ship floating on the water,” she noted, adding that seeing the sun both rise and set is one of the perks afforded homeowners.
Creating an elegant interior that embraces and enhances those picturesque views led the McKinlay Rose Interiors’ owners/designers to curate furnishings, finishes and fixtures that connect coastal influences with the picture-perfect setting of the eighth floor residence.
Overseeing design elements for every room required the design team to leave “no detail untouched.”
Incorporating custom millwork crafted by the designers’ full time, in-house contractors in the den, installing sculptural light fixtures hand-fashioned by independent artisans and featuring fabrics, floor rugs and paintings highlighting hues of soft blue, cream and grey tones demonstrated their attention to detail and dedication to ensuring the interior complements, rather than competes with, the building’s vibrant exterior palette.
Other nods to nature include a sunburst mirror bordered with intricate beadwork and radiating lavish silver leaf rays of light that greets guests as they enter the foyer, a zebra-striped runner lining the lengthy hallway between the den and living and dining rooms as well as French oak floors resembling driftwood.
“It’s the vibe of driftwood but with a soft, cashmere feel,” said McKinlay of the flooring.
Lighting is key to the overall design. Chandeliers, sconces and pendant lights add interest and allure with their intriguing shapes and strategic placements. With the benefit of both recessed lights and ceiling and wall fixtures, occupants are able to create an ambiance similar to candlelight or adjust lights for a bold, bright look, according to their mood. Motorized window shades control natural light levels, adjusting sunlight as needed without masking the views.
Texture also plays a prominent role. Foyer walls are covered with silver lead grass cloth that pairs perfectly with wall mounted, hand applied silver sconces. A polished stainless steel framed head- and footboard in the primary bedroom is inset with capiz shells arranged in a starburst pattern.
“My whole philosophy in design is it’s all in how you put it together. By taking the water elements, the textures, the colors, the glass and basically all of the elements and putting them together, the finished design becomes what you see,” said Rose.
Adding to the luxurious look are lustrous elements like the Bianco Rhino white marble tinted with subtle white and beige shades and grey to gold veining. Each of the four living room mirrors made from a simple cockbead moulding set in a brushed silver finish feature centerpiece selenite crystals. Oxidized mirror tiles form the kitchen’s backsplash to add a vintage touch to an otherwise modern space. A silver framed bevel mirror finished in antiquated champagne silver leaf and bookmarked by natural selenite crystal wands accented by silver leaf sconces, create a spa-like appearance in the primary bathroom that is outfitted with an extravagantly large walk-in shower with and nearby soaking tub. Textures Tower Over Downtown St. Pete
By Mary Lou Janson Design by Rob Bowen Design Group Photography by Harvey SmithBlending Old World charm with modern design to create a polished and welcoming living space requires both bold choices and subtle nuances.
Rob Bowen, principal of the St. Petersburg-based Rob Bowen Design Group, achieved that balance by mixing neutral furniture and fabrics, reflective surfaces like mirrors and metals and textured wall treatments featuring graphic designs to compose an interior well suited to its upscale, metropolitan setting, while also providing a comfortable and welcoming living environment.
“We needed a level of warmth and sophistication so we layered in textures to make it all look timeless, but to also spark a bit of emotion due to the unexpected touches that make this place special,” Bowen said about the design project at Bliss condominium in St. Pete.
Residences within this downtown development include open great rooms, walls of windows and balconies with sweeping views of the city’s skyline and coast. The three bedroom, two-and-a half bathroom space owned by Bowen’s clients is configured to showcase not only the city’s scenic waterfront, but also the bustling thoroughfare of Beach Drive that is lined with popular restaurants and shops.
“This condo is deep urban living with lots of city vibes,” Bowen said. “As people walk in the front door, the dining room is what they first see from the hallway. We wanted it to look beautiful, but also feel familiar when their eyes land on it. That’s what makes a home feel like home.”
From the moment the elevator doors open to the vestibule, the tone for what awaits across the threshold is set. A zebra hide patterned rug, statement chandelier, dramatic bowl sculpture and a sketch signed by noted artist Dale Chihuly make an indelible impression, and a powerful statement, within a modest space.
Just inside, the foyer features a wall display of local artists’ works that the clients collected themselves.
The dining area features four wall-mounted antique mirrors that frame the incredible urban, bayfront view from the opposite side of the flat. Aside from the view, the eye is drawn up to the chandelier crafted from delicate strands of bronze, brass, nickel and iron draped over a metal frame. Flanking the waxed oak table are statement chairs made from hammered nickel. Classic slipcover dining chairs surround the rest of the table, adding a familiar and soft layer to the room.
The level of meticulous detailing follows through to the walls which are wrapped in woven seagrass with a bronze leaf reveal beneath.
“It feels rich and organic, but from far away seems soft without screaming for attention,” Bowen noted.
The kitchen exudes a homey yet modern feel that features open shelves and a backsplash assembled from glazed reclaimed, ribbed brick.
“Each brick is colored a little differently due to the variance in the glazing, which tells a story,” said Bowen who compares the exposed shelves to the welcoming nature of an Italian kitchen. “There is a modern but homey feel to the kitchen, a mix of clean modern with a warm, inviting and sophisticated vibe.”
The primary bedroom accommodates a cerused wood finished, four poster king-sized bed frame with a woven cane head- and foot-board that allows ample room for a chaise lounge and side table. A backdrop of wall-to-wall sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows provide sweeping views that extend above and beyond roofs and treetops.
“The bedroom emulates being in a treehouse — it’s light and airy during the day. At night, once the heavy, metallic drapes are drawn, it transforms to this cozy and protected oasis,” Bowen said. Earth tones layered on top of a plush rug add to the comfort factor, while the legs on the side table resemble tree limbs for an organic touch.
Bowen Design Group 300 Beach Dr NE #111 St. Petersburg, FL 33701 727.822.8200Tropical Florida Living with Stunning Waterfront Views on Snell Island
By Ronda M. ParagWaterfront living in Snell Island offers some of the most beautiful waterfront views in the area. The eclectic neighborhood is one of the most desirable addresses in St. Petersburg with its array of architectural homes styles. The sprawling one-story home boasts 6,270 square feet with five bedrooms and five bathrooms set on just under a half acre of prestigious waterfront.
The block home was was constructed in 1964 and reinforced with steel beams and updated throughout the years. The center of the home has a ceiling height up to 17 feet. Of course, the beauty of the property is the deep sailboat water with approximately 140 feet of seawall with unobstructed views of the Pier, and enough room to dock a 50’ + yacht. From the rear of the home, watch dolphins and
manatees swim and play right in your backyard. The South facing rear offers natural ambient light streaming through the windows.
The split floor plan allows for privacy in the home where the entire west wing has been designated the owner’s en-suite, with double vanity master bathroom, walk-in closet, and a separate Jack & Jill bathroom shared with a private home office and the multi-use bonus room. In the east wing there are three spacious guest bedrooms, an original blue-tiled bathroom with two separate shower stalls, indicative of the 60’s style, as well as long hallways with substantial storage capability. The modern, open floor plan kitchen features solid wood cabinetry, walk-in pantry with wine refrigerator and wall ovens. The pass through counter bar seats four comfortably.
In addition, the home features a separate casual dining area and sitting/ reading room adjacent to the kitchen, where the warmth of the wood burning fire place can be enjoyed. Swim those laps in the nearly 44 feet long swimming pool that overlooks the waters of Tampa Bay. The convenience of downtown St. Petersburg is just three miles away to restaurants, shopping and nightlife. The proximity to the Vinoy Golf Club is just under a half mile from this stunning waterfront home. For that easy tropical lifestyle, you just might be home. M
