Another noteworthy (now historic) event is the sudden resignation of our former Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. While politically polarising, Jacinda brought New Zealand into the world spotlight for many good reasons.

Love her or not, the fact is that Jacinda is highly regarded in many international political arenas, and notched up several “firsts”. Politics is often a thankless task, and many former politicians will empathise with her “getting out”. There is life after politics.

Speaking of getting out, it is time for Cantabrians to start planning to get out and catch some action on the waves at Lyttelton next month.

SAIL GRAND PRIX COMES TO LYTTELTON

18-19 MARCH

Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour will come to life with the inaugural ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Christchurcha two day spectacle of thrilling racing, intense rivalries and boat-on-boat action just metres from the shoreline.

Thousands will experience the action, watch the drama, and be part of SailGP’s long-awaited New Zealand debut, taking place in front of sold-out crowds at Lyttelton’s newly transformed Naval Point.

If you’ve managed to secure tickets to the event, the best way to get to Lyttelton will be via o cial event shuttles, built into the ticket cost. Buses will leave from, and return to, Te Pae on both race days. Road closures will be in place from noon to 6PM each day and there will be no public parking in Lyttelton, so patrons are encouraged to plan ahead, get to the shuttles early and take advantage of this free service.

In just a few short weeks, racing fans will be able to catch Peter Burling, Blair Tuke and their New Zealand SailGP Team as they show o this new format of live action sailing for the first time in New Zealand.

Lyttelton was close to the epicenter of the devastating earthquake on 22 February 2011, but it’s now bouncing back and moving forward.

With the upcoming ITM New Zealand SailGP event taking place in Lyttelton on 18-19 March, the town is gearing up for an influx of tourists. Unsurprisingly, as one of the most popular activities in Lyttelton is taking a walk along the town’s waterfront, which o ers beautiful views of the harbour where you can also see the various ships and boats that call the port home.

Veteran Christchurch rally driver Trevor Crowe is a motorsport legend. Metropol catches up with him about the recent launch of his book, As The Crowe Flies.

FLYING HIGH

For many, Trevor Crowe (pictured) is best known for his motorracing exploits, yet he is a competitor in every sense, far beyond the race track. From running marathons, tackling the Coast to Coast, and even risking life and limb in the notorious Maraton Nautico del Rio Balsas Mexican powerboat race, his story is an inspirational one.

Following all his childhood escapades growing up in a workingclass Christchurch neighbourhood, to his formative years, and his long list of successes, As The Crowe Flies by author Steve Holmes, tells the story of Trevor’s life and exploits.

A local hero, creative, determined, competitive and courageous are all words used to describe him. Add in a disciplined work ethic, instilled by working with his father in the family garage at Waltham, and you have some insight into what shaped him.

“Growing up, I read all the hero stories I could lay my hands on,” he explains. “I loved them, and what they achieved in many di erent fields.”

The adventures of others set the scene for his own undertakings. With the “want wheels you work for it and save for it” advice from his father ringing in his ears, young Trevor followed his dreams from the age of seven.

Seventy years later that same steely determination still drives him to break new boundaries. “Looking back just gives you a sore neck,” he says.

“Everything, and I mean everything, is about going forward.”

Trevor knows how to drive a car fast no problem, but building the perfect competition car is a never-ending challenge for him. He’s always thinking, always prepared to go back to the drawing board, always an open mind to new ideas and concepts.

From a 1932 MG J2 through to the highest level of international competition car, Trevor has done it all, building at least 20 of them himself.

Some of his creations have been “downright scary’. “They were all well thought out, and engineered, but the biggest engine in the smallest cars... that required a skilful pilot,” he laughs.

Along the way, Trevor mastered the ability to build and motivate a great team, in business and in his many sporting adventures. “It’s simple principles, such as sharing knowledge, building talent, celebrating success, courage, fitness, and attitude,” he says.

“In a team, everyone has a voice, and is open to feedback, learning and moving forward are the key to success.”

Recent years have seen Trevor facing a few medical (and life-threatening) challenges. In his characteristic determined way, and with the same “bloody mindedness wrapped in courage” he always displays (according to partner Colleen), he’s dealt with them.

Once one car had served its purpose it was sacrificed to provide the funds for the next exciting project already ruminating in Trevor’s brain. Motorsports are just part of his achievements, which include building and running successful businesses, Coast to Coast competition, international marathons, Mexican jet boat odysseys, and a Himalayan adventure, riding his motorcycle over the highest road in the world. Having a quiet lie-in is not something in his repertoire.

“He’s always asking questions and continually seeking a practical solution,” Colleen says. This approach has served him well, and still today he is building new race cars, competing in high profile events, as well as following a strict health and fitness regime.

He’s still flying high.

Angus “Gus” Leen, a young entrepreneur and industrial designer, and Deborah Still, an interior designer and business owner of 39 years, have found solace in each other’s company, and a shared appreciation for design.

“I was judging a book by its cover and thought, Oh – I haven’t got it in me to talk to this young lad that I don’t know when I’m feeling so heartbroken – just my luck!”

Deborah recalls, “I don’t remember how the conversation started out. But suddenly, we were looking at Instagram because I told Gus I was a designer, and he was chatting about design. Then the whole evening just flew by, us sharing pictures on our phones and talking all night.”

It was unexpected, Gus adds. “We’ve talked about it since and thought it must have been Barrie who sat us together at his funeral as a way to help us through since his passing.”

Despite their initial reservations about talking to someone they didn’t know at such a di cult time, Gus and Deborah found that they had a true connection through their shared fascination for design inspired by nature.

Gus admits how surprised he was that they have so much in common considering the 38 year age gap.

He describes how he found a great mentor that evening.

“At the funeral, I remember sharing

with Deborah about how I wasn’t enjoying my first year in university.”

To o er Gus some new inspiration, Deborah introduced him to her business friends at ‘Tréology’ in Christchurch.

Gus came away feeling incredibly motivated.

The unlikely duo soon found they were meeting regularly, and realised the potential for professional collaboration. They have since worked on many projects together, and have discovered a natural synergy and ease in their workflow.

“I don’t look at gender, sexuality, or age; it’s actually completely irrelevant. Those things don’t change who a person is.”

Deborah shared that she is thoroughly enjoying watching a young New Zealand designer’s journey.

“I really admire Gus’s dedication to quality and eye for detail, and that he’s pushing the boundaries. Like that Newcastle design he’s doing right now, it’s so di erent.”

Bringing a fresh perspective and honest feedback to the table helps them both in their design work.

“Deborah never creates two designs that look the same, and they are always unique to the customer,” explains Gus.

“There are so many people that you find that are just focused on what’s trending, which is beautiful, but they’re

not focusing on actually what matters for the customer.

“She takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape of the interior she’s working on.

‘When I walk into a space that Deborah has created, I can see where she pulled her colours and forms from in the natural features that encompass the home,” he adds.

Deborah’s clients work with her because they trust her design, she says.

“They know I’ll sell them something they’ll love for a long time, which is why I love to tell Gus’s story.”

Gus makes beautiful, fine quality lighting and furniture pieces from sustainably sourced materials at his workshop in Timaru.

Despite their di erence in age, it doesn’t get in the way of their friendship.

“I don’t actually ever think of Gus as older or younger than me. But, I don’t think of anyone that I care about as anything other than the actual essence of who the person is. I don’t look at gender, sexuality, or age; it’s actually completely irrelevant. Those things don’t change who a person is,” says Deborah.

“Deborah and I can talk for hours and lose track of time” Gus adds, “We get music on and talk over a few gins, the conversation always comes back to design, and it’s so inspiring.”

Their unlikely friendship serves as a reminder that age is just a number and that sometimes, the most unexpected connections can lead to the most rewarding collaborations.

SLOWING costs

The average cost of building a home in New Zealand’s main centres increased by 11.3 percent last year, but the good news is that the rising cost of construction appears to be slowing down.

Industry watchdog QV CostBuilder’s December price update analysed more than 51,500 rates to reach the latest increase in the cost to build a standard three-bedroom home.

This compares with a 20.9 percent annual increase in its May 2022 update.

Spokesperson and quantity surveyor, Martin Bisset says it appears that construction costs may finally be levelling o now, although at double-digit growth

over the past year, there’s a long way to go to pre-pandemic prices.

The biggest elemental price increases since the May update related to framing, which went up 9.5 percent due to the increasing cost of precast concrete, reinforcing and structural steel. Costs related to exterior walls and exterior finish went up 7.7 percent, and the cost of upper floors and stairs and balustrades went up 7.4 and 6 percent respectively.

How are forward bookings and existing contracts handled in a sales process?

It is exciting for a Purchaser to have forward bookings or existing contracts when they purchase a business – these provide confidence in the business.

Often an Agreement for the Sale & Purchase of a Business will have a clause of acceptance by a Purchaser undertaking that they will honour all forward bookings and existing contracts included with the business, providing that they can be provided profitably. There is no advantage to a Purchaser if the goods or services can’t be provided at a profit for them.

With forward bookings, any deposits received by the Vendor for these will be passed on to the Purchaser to enable the goods or services to be provided.

Existing contracts (often with suppliers to the business) will need to be renewed with the Purchaser (who should ensure that the terms and conditions remain the same as those enjoyed by the Vendor). These matters are normally dealt with quite smoothly at sale time and should not cause disruption to the process.

If we make one New Year’s resolution, let it be to listen to people who know what they’re talking about and whose vast financial knowledge easily dispels much of the doom merchants’ predictions. People such as Alistair Bean (pictured) of Alistair Bean and AssociatesFinancial Advisers, whose 42 years working in finances – 32 years with ANZ and 10 years heading his own financial advisory service - underscores his astuteness on all matters financial. “We have seen a lot of bad news from politicians and the media lately – but there’s far more good news out there than they would have you believe.”

While acknowledging times have been tough for many the world over, Alistair says there are positive things happening that we should be aware of. “People can be far more positive than they are. Borders are open, shipping and trade is greatly

improving, tourism is thriving, and global employment is at record levels.” “There will be pain with fixed mortgage rates going onto new fixed mortgage rates but that may not last for long. There’s a bit of crystal ball gazing happening out there, but when interest/inflation rates go down, and they will, that can only lead to good outcomes.”

“Having funds sitting on the side-lines in term deposits while all this occurs is likely a much bigger risk by not participating in all that recovery. Money still makes money over time.”

Regarding oil costs, Alistair says the price of oil went from $125 per barrel to just over $80 per barrel.

“With the government assistance of 25 percent coming o that price at end of January, it may not be as bad if the price comes down.”

Comparing where we are today with where we were 50 years ago, Alistair believes we are in a far better place.

“If you look at the World Poverty Clock, in the 1970s, 30 percent of people were living in extreme poverty; now that percentage has dropped to 7.7 percentwhich is a huge improvement.”

“Things are getting better, especially with those macro things that politicians tend to forget about,” Alistair says.

His role in his financial company is to chat with clients and put their minds at ease, and to help them think about the medium to long term as well. “Because we’re all living longer, less of us retire at 65. We’re still working, and earning money, and are probably the wealthiest and healthiest we’ve ever been.”

With 2023 well underway, some New Year’s resolutions may have already fallen by the wayside (whoops). It’s not too late, however, to initiate a new lifesaving resolution and start donating blood or plasma right now.

Aotearoa needs more than 4000 blood donations each week, but fewer than four percent of the population are donors. Demand for plasma is also growing. More than 7000 donors are needed in the next 12 months to keep up.

In total, NZ Blood – the sole provider of blood products to New Zealand – needs approximately 40,000 new donors this year to meet requirements. In 2023 demand is predicted to increase by four percent for blood and 10 percent for plasma.

Red is the colour of love, and can be used in a variety of ways, every day, to show someone you love them. Here are some quick and easy suggestions:

CHOCOLATE DIPPED STRAWBERRIESperfect when strawberries are in season. Simply melt chocolate buttons over a slow heat, dip the strawberries in, and arrange artistically before serving them. Try white chocolate for a change, and remember to leave the stalks on the berries. Alternatively thread on a kebab stick and serve.

HAND-MADE CHOCOLATES

Invest in a silicone chocolate/candy mould, stock up with chocolate buttons, and fresh fruit such as raspberries. Melt the chocolate, pour half into the moulds, add the fruit, then add the remaining chocolate. Allow to set. Dark chocolate works well with raspberries. Remember fresh fruit goes o so eat as soon as possible.

FRESH BERRY SMOOTHIES

Treat your loved one to a red-hued berry smoothie for breakfast. Milk, yoghurt, berries, a raw egg, and a dash of chilli flakes will set their taste buds on fire.

Instead of bacon with pancakes and maple syrup, try fresh berries instead, especially during the summer months. (See our recipe on the next page)

If you plan on celebrating Valentine’s Day regularly, invest in a heartshaped cookie cutter. Make your favourite biscuit mix, cut, bake and ice with melted white chocolate, sprinkled with red jelly crystals.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be a huge affair, and neither should treating someone be confined to just one day of the year.

Swapping bacon for berries is a healthier option, and using buttermilk instead of regular milk, ensures light, flu y pancakes. This is a recipe which originated with Annabel Langbein, but has been adapted slightly.

INGREDIENTS — MAKES 10

2 cups self-raising flour

1 Tsp baking powder

1/4 cup raw sugar

2 eggs

1 Tsp vanilla extract

2 cups buttermilk

METHOD

50g butter, melted, plus extra to cook

2 cups fresh raspberries and/or strawberries

Maple syrup

Separate the egg whites from the yolks. Whisk together the egg yolks, buttermilk and vanilla in a mixing bowl, then whisk in flour, sugar and baking powder.

Add butter and whisk until smooth. Beat the egg whites until sti , and then gently fold into the mix.

Leave to stand for 10 minutes before cooking to allow the gluten to relax.

Melt a little extra butter in a heavy-based frying pan. When it is hot and bubbling, drop in about a quarter cup batter from the end of a spoon.

Cook over a medium heat until bubbles form on the surface (2-3 minutes) then flip to cook the other side. Repeat until the mix is used.

Serve in a stack drizzled with maple syrup, and topped with fresh berries.

• When researching a breeder, check they’re undertaking all the important health tests, like for certain hereditary and congenital conditions and to assess eyes, ears, hips, thyroid, heart and more. Otherwise you could be stuck with a pup who’s often at the vet.

Many youngsters start out with a pet goldfish in a bowl, and some progress through to having their own home aquariums.

Creating your own aquarium is relatively easy, depending on what type of fish, and how many you want to keep. Guppies, zebrafish, goldfish, loaches, mollies, neon tetras, and suckerfish are some of the easiest fish to take care of in a community aquarium. Talk to an expert at your local pet shop for advice. Here are Metropol’s suggestions for setting up a tropical fish aquarium:

1. DECIDE WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO PUT IT, AND HOW BIG IT WILL BE. Some fish tanks come with a stand, others are freestanding. Choose a place where it is out of direct sunlight, near a power supply,

and in a draught-free, relatively consistent temperature area.

2. RINSE GRAVEL, FILTER (if using one), rocks, plants, and ornaments in cold tap water, then add to tank, creating an underwater garden for the fish to play in.

3. FILL WITH WATER, THEN ADD HEATER NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE AQUARIUM. Make sure it is not touching the gravel or anything else in the aquarium.

4. SET UP EXTERNAL FILTRATION AND LIGHTING as per the instructions in the product manual.

5. ADD A WATER CONDITIONER AND BACTERIAL AGENT and wait for a couple of days so it settles, and the water comes up to temperature, before adding your fish.

From rows of plants in test tubes lining the wall, to complete plant coverage, there are numerous ways to go about it.

Here are some suggestions:

1. DECIDE WHERE AND HOW BIG. Assess the environment, and make sure there is plenty of natural light to encourage plant growth. Bright, indirect light is ideal for most plant walls.

2. SORT THE STYLE AND DESIGN OF THE WALL. It may be as simple as a DIY shelving system for pots to sit on, or an inbuilt, long-term, plant wall system, complete with timed water drippers, professionally designed and constructed.

3. THINK ABOUT WHAT PLANTS WILL WORK BEST IN YOUR WALL. Select low maintenance varieties such as pothos (Epipremnum aureum), philodendron,

Anew app, developed by a group of New Zealand researchers can let you do just that.

Members of the TAIAO project at Waikato and Canterbury universities have used a data set of more than one million identified images to train Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify Aotearoa’s plants, animals and fungi. It’s the first tool tailor-made for Aotearoa wildlife and plant species.

The programme recognises unique features in photos of species large and small, from Hector’s dolphins to striated ants, and returns the scientific name, common names, and other related classifications, including Māori names where available.

The Aotearoa Species Classifier app can also identify wildlife wherever the user is, even without an internet connection. For those who wish to delve deeper at home,

there’s an additional web classifier with more powerful models and tools.

PhD student Hongyu Wang and research programmer Paul Schlumbom developed the models and software and are continuing to work on the project. Paul says they have discovered some unexpected benefits.

New Year New Opportunities

Welcome to 2023: a year that, like its recent predecessors, will have its very own signature.

That combination of continuing market changes (think price), challenges (think interest rates plus inflationary pressure) and beauty (or opportunity, as I like to call it).

I’m curious about the year ahead. We have an election, always interesting, given its potential to hamper major decision-making at both an individual and a national level, and we have that vacuum created when everyone is trying to pick the bottom of the market and the likelihood of an upswing.

Which, I might add, will eventually happen, as it has every other time there’s been a slump in activity –repositioning, as some industry experts like to describe the current market.

Last year, at about this time, I looked at my very old and battered crystal ball hoping for some sort of insight befitting my now 29-year tenure.

I noted that experts were at odds, with opinions that ranged from a 4% decrease in prices across the board to others thinking that the astronomical gains of the 2020/’21 period could continue. In retrospect, it looks like no-one realised the depth of the correction we would go on to experience – or the level of zeal the Reserve Bank would bring to the country with its ‘stop spending’ and ‘beware the property market is unsustainable’ mandate.

Frequent increases in our OCR levels, interest rate rises (with more to come) have all but brought to a halt that runaway horse we were riding, one which had indulged itself on huge increases in property values, cheap money and eye-watering auction clearance rates.

So where are we going?

A lot of the dialogue is once again mixed, so maybe rather than look at data (which can be confusing no matter how experienced you are) I’d prefer to look at opportunities that are being created.

I’m thinking about you, buyers!

You are the lucky ones in this orbit of the marketing cycle.

Do not squander your chances while standing on the side-line thinking, I’ll wait it out, I’ll squeeze every last ounce of opportunity out of the seller.

You have so much on your side, especially choice, that most exquisite of factors which over the last few years has been such a rarity.

There are large numbers of properties on or coming to the market. On December 19th, 2022, there were 1,917 Christchurch homes for sale.

Owners are also more educated as to prices now, many doing their best with both their presentation and their negotiation opportunities, and you, our dedicated buyers, have the chance to lock in your interest rate.

Make the decision to buy and get on, or further up, the property ladder, because you certainly have that chance.

It’s perhaps a fact of human nature that even when you have everything you could possibly want, you’ll still go for more. That’s the dilemma I’ve seen with some buyers as they challenge prices, even those that are vastly reduced, whilst insisting on extra chattels to be included in the sale. Rather than the property, we’re talking fridges, spas, trampolines and cushions.

But there’s a flipside here. Recently (January 5th, 2023), CoreLogic noted that although there’s been a nationwide drop in prices, slowing in December, Christchurch bucked the trend (the only main centre to do so).

Here’s the clincher: Christchurch is an incredibly affordable city with attractive lifestyle options, so despite everything that’s happening we are still fortunate here.

With that, I’m keen to make the most of what’s ahead. I’ve planned a massive year prioritizing health and wellbeing, doing great business and hopefully getting out of my comfort zone.

HAIR SALON DESIGN WINNING

Surreal Hair (Christchurch) was recently judged best salon design at the annual Industry Awards.

The awards recognise the best business, training and creative talent in New Zealand’s hair, beauty and barbering industries.

Salon owner Michelle Marsh relocated her business and reopened Surreal Hair in July 2022, saying at the time that it felt like a “homecoming”.

“As soon as I arrived here, I had that feeling of excitement again – all the things I had missed working in a proper salon were

right in front of me,” she explains. The 2011 earthquakes required the salon to move to a renovated-for-purpose villa in Westminster Street. Clients loved it, but Michelle and the team found it a limiting workspace.

The salon, designed by Krush Architecture Ltd, exudes calm and serenity, something Michelle was focused on from the beginning. “People’s lives are so busy now; it’s nice to have an oasis – a place to

enjoy time out.”

It’s natural to think about the future at the start of the new year. For Urban Development, the newest team here at ChristchurchNZ, future focus is part of the everyday.

There is tremendous value in intentional urban planning and place-making. One of these projects is the old Citycare site on Milton Street, Sydenham, where site preparation

works are underway, enabling construction of a new research facility and upgrades to water and electricity infrastructure.

Part of the site will be developed into a sustainable residential project, near Sydenham Park. This will result in a well-designed neighbourhood close to jobs, services, recreation and pedestrian, cycling and public transport options.

The value won’t stop at the site boundary, also creating communities and connections to both park and city, with the research facility providing good employment opportunities.

With time, patience and capital, thoughtful urban development will support the city’s sustainable urban growth and economic development goals.

Game on Canterbury

Over the past few weeks, our team has been returning to the office, refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead.

We’ve already held our first event for 2023, and more are planned over the coming weeks, including an event we are particularly excited to see get underway –Game On Canterbury.

Taking place on Sunday 19 February, Game On Canterbury is a first for Ōtautahi Christchurch –a new event aimed at showcasing the sport and active recreation activities in our city, and encouraging people to sign in, join up and get active.

I’ve spoken previously about the responsibility we feel towards our community. As a regeneration project

for the city, we acknowledge the role we have in supporting the growth and success of our city and its residents – and not just through economic impact.

Game On Canterbury is one of those ways we can give back. We’ve partnered with a local company to get this underway, attracting local sports and organisations for the benefit of local residents.

Resetting priorities

We saw couriers racing around delivering goods, and the stifling presence of shoppers in unprecedented numbers in retail outlets right across the Canterbury region.

For others there was a di erent scenario. Spending constraints were palpable. We witnessed the pressure on charitable institutions desperately working to improve outcomes for many who were facing a tough festive season.

Demands on food banks and base level accommodation, pressures on mental health providers and anti-social behaviours were all increasingly evident.

These sad and challenging aspects of society are more acute every year and seem to show no signs of abating.

This year there was also reinforcement of the new dimension - families prevented from getting

together because of Covid-19 infections, or the lingering threat of Covid-19. Or possibly worse, families getting together with the best possible intentions and maybe creating a superspreader event.

The ongoing direct and indirect ramifications of Covid-19 on travel and service delivery, particularly in the hospitality sector, were unprecedented. However, we got through, and paradoxically all these disruptive dynamics made us more aware of what we really should be celebrating.

For many the “flu ”, the tinsel, the indulgences, the extravagances took second place to simply enjoying time with others, valued friendships, good company, and positive family interaction. There was a realisation that health issues (not just Covid-19) can compromise what the festive season is really all about.

Ihad a fantastic time away with my family for Christmas and New Year, but now it’s time to get down to business with a busy year ahead. Since being back in the o ce, I have been getting out and about in the city and it is great to see so many people enjoying the cafes, bars, shops, markets, and all the other attractions Christchurch has on o er.

The trams have been full and river banks are packed with people, enjoying the Garden City’s hospitality. We have been so spoilt with a number of enjoyable, and even spectacular, events over the summer. The return of the Bread & Circus World Buskers

Festival, the Christchurch T20 Black Clash, Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, and Treetech Sparks, to name just a few, have drawn people of all ages to the city, and also to explore wider Canterbury.

Christchurch has a real buzz, and it feels like we have really turned a corner in getting back on our feet after the Covid-19 pandemic ground the city to a halt.

I have a good feeling about 2023, and what better way to showcase our city to the world than by hosting the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix on Lyttelton Harbour in March. Bring it on!

I hope you had a well-earned summer break and are feeling refreshed for the coming year.

EXPERIENCES MORE DELAYS

Construction of Christchurch’s indoor sports and aquatics facility, Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, is now expected to be complete in spring 2024.

Construction sector constraints, challenging ground conditions and regular changes to the construction programme have continued to hamper progress, which Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive, John Bridgman, says is disappointing for everyone involved.

“We know people are incredibly eager to ride the hydroslides, play on the indoor courts and move their sport’s HQ into Parakiore, but the contractor hasn’t made

enough progress during this challenging period to have the work completed late 2023 as planned, and has revised its timetable accordingly,” he says.

“As the owner of Parakiore, Christchurch City Council will need time to commission the facility. If the build is finished towards the end of 2024, an early 2025 opening would be likely.

“Worker numbers are now increasing, which gives us greater confidence in the

road ahead,” he adds.

“While construction will take longer to complete, we have a fixed-price contract with the contractor and any variations beyond the $317m already allocated will be worked through and agreed on with the contractor at a later date, but these won’t prevent us completing this outstanding facility.”

Council’s funding contribution to Parakiore remains capped.

international quality of this convention centre. Moment of Movement forms the entry to Te Pae’s administration building that sets the scene and welcomes new prospective clients.

“Given the unique space in which Moment of Movement sits and the tapering forms of the work, it made sense to tackle the installation once the building was complete.

“With the artwork, Te Aika and Hana all visible on a walk around the outside of Te Pae, we’d encourage everyone to come take a look at these magnificent new artworks.”

The pool complex was a winner in the commercial category of the 2022 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) awards.

Near Methven and close to the base of Ōpuke, the complex design references a journey across the Canterbury Plains, through the nearby Rakaia Gorge, and into the mountains beyond.

Judges say the architects cleverly illustrated this journey with material selections and architectural forms that reference ideas of protection, compression, and opening: a gabion walled entranceway leads one inside, where internally expressed roof grid of LVL beams float mountain-like above beech-clad interiors. From here, alternate pathways lead to family, adults-only, or exclusive luxury spa areas, making this facility a pleasure to explore, and a positive addition to the area’s tourism.
