Ready to offer care without compromise.
For Oceania, great care is about building a supportive environment that feels like home. For Sandy, The Bellevue’s new Care Manager, there’s a simple way to tell when they’ve got it just right.
“Smiling and happy residents. That’s what great care looks like. Being part of the community and participating in activities.
”Sandy admits her favourite part is building bonds with the residents. “It’s great hearing all the stories of their lives and their experiences. They put their trust in us, and that’s a truly humbling feeling.
”What’s her vision for The Bellevue? An environment where everyone feels valued and included. “Happy staff means happy residents. It’s always been my motto. We’ve built a team who are focused on providing a more person-centred approach. But it’s also about the residents getting their say. It’s important they have an input.”

I’m a magazine junkie from way back, whether it’s the latest science journal, my husband’s boating publications, a lifestyle magazine such as Metropol, or a relaxing fashion fix.
During the pandemic, many magazines folded, although
NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019
post-Covid-19 there are now more published nationally than pre-pandemic.
Lifestyle magazines are one of life’s essentials, with a unique value in that they entertain, relax, inspire, and open our eyes to what’s on-trend, who’s who, and to advertising opportunities.
They’re inspirational and aspirational, and leading the field in Christchurch is Metropol magazine. Celebrating 25 years this October, Metropol is, and will continue to be, Christchurch’s number one lifestyle magazine.
The numbers speak for themselves. The only audited lifestyle magazine in Christchurch, 40,000 copies

John and Lynette McFadden are well known Christchurch real estate professionals, with more than 26 years in the industry. They own New Zealand’s No 1 residential office and francise for Harcourts. They talk to Metropol about working together and philanthropy.
Not everyone would find it easy, or preferable, to work so closely with their partner, so it’s interesting to discover some of the lessons John and Lynette McFadden have learnt over the years while excelling in a highly driven and competitive industry.
Lynette says she has always considered herself lucky to work with John.
“We have entirely di erent skill sets and have learnt over the years to let those speak for themselves. The acumen John brings to the business, his comprehensive contractual knowledge and ability to problem solve di cult matters in a calm way leaves me in the dust,” she explains.
“I’d end up with palpitations and go o on some tangent. I’m not a particularly practical person.
“Equally I have a lot of influence over the tone of our business, what our marketing looks like, how we can enhance the experience for the team we work with and the people we work for. I’m the creative force and John encourages and trusts that to me so we are not second guessing and questioning each other.
“I guess you’d say we stick in our own lanes, and we are also big goal setters.
“We have done this for our entire lives together,” she adds.
John is also full of praise. “I’ve always thought working together had some real
advantages. You can work on the business beyond the usual working hours, reducing the chance of opportunities being lost because you can’t deal with them till the following week when you get back to the o ce,” he says.
“I guess you’d say we stick in our own lanes, and we are also big goal setters. We have done this for our entire lives together.”
“It’s also very satisfying achieving shared goals and dreams, and knowing that working together you’ve made a real
di erence for your family.
“I love working with Polly (which is the name I have for Lynette) and I make sure that we still make time to remember there’s more to life than work.
“We travel a lot. Due to my long time interest in cycling, we’ve been to France and other parts of Europe many times where I’ve enjoyed some fabulous cycling.
“Despite my encouragement Polly has passed on the cycling, preferring to check out the local villages and galleries instead. We also have our eldest son Harry living in the Northern Hemisphere for six months a year, so we’ve travelled extensively to visit him, often with our younger son Louis.”
Both agree that real estate has been
kind to them, and that giving back is extremely important. “For us that involves families in need, and children.
“We have a significant involvement, personally and as a business, with KidsCan, and have taken on helping a local cause called Full Bellies, which provides hundreds of lunches weekly to local schools,” they say.
John is also involved in helping young sports people trying to break into their chosen field, and collectively the McFaddens are committed to assisting Scape in its quest to secure incredible art for the city.
“Giving is one of our values as is family and friendship. It’s that simple really.”
The McFaddens have five Harcourts o ces throughout the Christchurch region, and previously included o ces on the West Coast and in Wanaka for a time.
With large teams of consultants, administrators, an inhouse financial team, marketing and design department, a property management o ce, an international division, and a staging company, they have more than 140 people to consider and look after.

Her inspiration comes from anything “that gives me ideas, energy and positive emotion”.
“People inspire me, particularly those who achieve something against all odds, or have the courage to step out of their comfort zone. I have just read The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates about the women who have inspired heryes, I was very inspired after that read,” she says.
The quote Chris was drawn to led to her and Margie Foster starting the Inspired Events organisation in Christchurch.
“I had been thinking for some time of creating a space and opportunity for women to network socialise and share information, a trusted community of women,” she explains.
“The stars aligned when Margie and I caught up, and shared our vision for what
became Inspired Events - Inspiring Me Now.
“We started it as a welcoming space for women to grow their network, share personal stories and expertise, as well as hear from amazing local speakers within the walls of a gorgeous private club or larger event space.
“To this day we still work to that model. For us, it’s like inviting someone into our own homes – manaakitanga.”
The mother of four grown sons, and wife of retired National MP Nuk Korako, Chris has a long and strong business career, and directorships, including Chair of a $600m+ Foundation. She has always been positive.
“I think I was born with the positive gene, it has been my guiding light throughout my life. For me, positivity is all about mind-set, surrounding myself with good people, and of course my whanau and friends. I see the absolute best in everyone and everything, until proven otherwise.”
One of Chris’ role models is her late mother Lily, who she lost to cancer while in her early 30s.
“She was highly intelligent and artistic, with the ability to see the best and beauty in everything. Mum had enormous inner strength and a can-do attitude that radiated an outward love for life and adventure.
“She was my positive gene.”
Chris’ advice to other women is to value their uniqueness. “Set your goals early in the year, not a shopping list, but a clear set of goals.
“Find a community of women you can spend time with, both face-toface, and virtual, who will challenge and inspire you. My final tip is to become one of our inspiring women.” Visit www.inspiringmenow.com
“Your value will be not what you know; it will be what you share.” GINNI ROMETTY. This quote proved inspirational for Christine (Chris) Korako, pictured, who now shares her knowledge to inspire others.
Christchurch has a rich Scottish heritage, evident in its people, buildings, and also its pipe bands. Metropol deputy editor Daniella Judge discovers the latter are gaining traction with young and old.
The Scottish heritage in Christchurch is deep-rooted, with many of the city’s early settlers being of Scottish descent. This has resulted in the preservation and celebration of Scottish culture throughout the city, as demonstrated through events such as the annual Scottish Festival.
Christchurch boasts several landmarks that pay tribute to its Scottish roots, although some were lost to time and nature. One was the iconic Caledonian Hall on Kilmore Street, destroyed in the 2011 Canterbury earthquake.
Various Christchurch groups continue to promote and preserve Scottish heritage through activities such as highland dancing, pipe bands, and bagpiping.
With such a rich Scottish heritage, it’s no surprise that pipe bands have gained popularity in Christchurch, and elsewhere in New Zealand. Next month Cantabrians will have a chance to hear and see its local pipe bands, and others, in action in the 2023 New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships.
The sound of marching feet, traditional kilts with box pleats, white shirts under black vests, unforgettable bagpipe melodies, and
Pipe band involvement has become increasingly popular among younger generations in Christchurch.
In an era where technology has created a sense of loneliness, more and more people are seeking new ways to spend their time and connect with their community.
The Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association (RNZPBA) runs many of the pipe band events in Christchurch, o ers summer school programmes for aspiring musicians, as also runs mentorship programmes.
Anyone of any age or skill can get involved and local bands are listed on the RNZPBA website (opposite).

Being part of a pipe band o ers a sense of community and a shared goal to produce a seamless musical ensemble, and great satisfaction. Joining such a band can also lead to travel opportunities. For example, the outstanding Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band will

A recent news article caught my eye, saying “Christchurch business owner jailed for attempted rape and indecent assault of employee”.
In summary Gerald Diver, the owner of a local painting business, had been sexually harassing and assaulting female sta members. While he was not convicted of rape, the judge “found it likely” that Diver had raped a young female employee, that he had plied with alcohol.
One young lady resigned, and another confronted Diver about attempting to rape her, and then he sacked her!
The issue for anyone dealing with o ensive behaviour of any type, particularly sexually o ensive behaviour, is what to do about it? A good first step is to get advice. Larger companies will say that they have HR to deal with such issues, but in my experience there are times when HR will support and protect the reputation of the individuals, and the company, over the employees.
Any employer should have simple and easy solutions about where somebody can go for further advice. It is as simple as reformatting this article as a poster, and putting it somewhere visible in the workplace. In cases of serious assaults or rape - start with the police.
A quick Google search will show several organisations working in this area. They include:
Safe to Talk , 24/7 confidential helpline, call 800 044 344, or text them at 4334
Aviva - www.aviviafamilies.org.nz
START - Sexual Assault Support Services Canterbury Victimsupport.org.nz 0800 842 846
Employers have a positive obligation to provide a safe working environment and something as simple as a poster in the workplace is not a big ask.

Lingerie specialists say there are three key steps you can follow to ensure a correct read every time when measuring your bust.
Bra sizes are based on your band size, which is the number, and your cup size, which is the letter, usually determined by using a soft, fabric tape measure around your bust, and also just beneath.
Step one: Measure underneath your bust. Wrap a soft fabric tape measure around your ribcage directly beneath your bust. Make sure the tape is in a straight line and
is snug but not too tight. Round up to the nearest even number and this is your band size.
Step two: Measure directly across the centre of your bust, once again making sure that the tape is snug, and in a straight band all the way around. It may help to take a deep breath in and out to ensure the tape isn’t too tight.
Step three: Round the number to the nearest whole number. To determine your cup size, first, subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement and refer to the adjacent cup size chart.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body and when it looks fresh and glows with good health, our confidence grows.
Laser Rejuvenation specialises in treating skin problems, such as dark spots, sun spots, pigmentation damage, freckling and frown lines, utilising its state-of-theart CuRAS laser, the latest in skin rejuvenation technology.
“We are the only laser clinic in Christchurch that boasts the CuRAS laser – cutting edge technology – and that specialises in this gamechanging treatment,” says owner Clayton Wills.
The carbon facial peel is a rejuvenation therapy that targets acne, blackheads, open pores, oiliness, mottled and dull complexions and reduced collagen.
Also recommended as an anti-aging treatment, the carbon facial peel can tighten pores, reduce creases, wrinkles and fine lines to enhance complexions.
Onychomycosis is a fungal nail disease (of both fingernails and toenails) that causes discoloration, thickening, and separation from the nail bed.
When the CuRAS laser targets the area of infection, the heat that is produced inhibits the growth of the fungus and destroys it.
Tattoo removal and lightening are two other treatments provided here.
“Tattoo lightening enables people to have choices around having another tattoo replace the former one,” says Clayton.

Confidence comes from feeling good about ourselves and is built from maintaining both our internal and external health.
Christchurch’s satellite towns have grown so fast that to keep up with rising populations, and demands, facilities have had to grow apace .
Kaiapoi, once considered a quiet retirement town on the outskirts of Christchurch, no longer fits that description. It is now a bustling, vibrant place that an increasing number of people call home.
Dentures Plus recognised there was a need to extend its Christchurch presence and opened a second clinic in Kaiapoi, in
March 2022.
Owner and Clinician Ryan Carlton is committed to providing the town and district with a quality dentures service.
“We are the only full-time dentures clinic in the region. We are really happy with the business expansion, as clients no longer have to travel into Christchurch to our St Albans clinic.
“Here [Kaiapoi] is an easy and very accessible location.”
There are many reasons people seek new dentures, from loss of dentures during a bout of illness through to dentures no longer fitting well or looking as good as they used to.
Ryan and the team also do repairs on emergency denture breaks of both full and www.denturesplus.co.nz
Fortunately, muscle tension in your neck and shoulders responds well to stretching, yoga, relaxation, and other stress management methods.
HOW DOES STRESS AND ANXIETY CAUSE TENSION IN YOUR NECK AND SHOULDERS?
When you experience a stressful event or a bout of anxiety, your muscles contract, sometimes forcefully. This is an automatic or reflex reaction. It’s known as a stress or “fight or flight” response.
HERE IS ONE STRETCH YOU CAN DO DAILY to help relieve tension and tightness in your neck and shoulders.
Deep Neck Stretch
This is a deep stretch that eases tension in your neck and helps improve your range of motion.
• Stand tall with your left arm at your side.
• Place your right hand on your head with your fingers pointing to the left side.
• Gently pull your head toward the right side until you feel a stretch in the left side of your neck.
• Hold for 20 to 30 seconds and return to centre.
GreenleesThe areas where you’re likely to feel stress or a anxiety-related tension are in your neck and shoulders. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain, and other health issues.
Child’s Pose
Child’s Pose or Balasana is a well-known yoga pose that can help relieve neck and back pain. It’s also a gentle stretch that helps you relax.
• Get on your hands and knees with your palms flat on the floor, wrists under your shoulders, and knees under your hips.
• Sit back on your heels, lengthen your spine, and walk your hands in front of you. Make sure to hinge at your hips.
• Fold forward and keep your arms extended in front of you.
• Hold this position for 60 to 90 seconds. Focus on breathing while you release tension in your neck and shoulders.
• Repeat 10 to 12 times.
Thread the needle
Thread the needle is a stretch that helps release tension in your back, neck, and shoulders.
• Get on your hands and knees with your palms flat on the floor, wrists under your shoulders, knees under your hips.
• Slide your right hand (palm up) on the floor to the left side of your body. Your body will rotate with the movement, and your right shoulder will touch the floor as you look to the left side. Use left hand to support weight.
• Hold position for 20 to 30 seconds and return to the starting position.
• Repeat on the left side, and do 2 to 3 times on each side.
The neck release is a gentle way to loosen tension in your shoulders and neck.
• Stand tall with both arms at your sides.
• Lower your head and bring your chin toward your chest.
• Gently tilt your head towards the right side and pause for 30 seconds. You should feel a stretch in the left side of your neck.
• Bring your head back to the centre and lift to the starting position.
• Repeat before changing sides.
• Do 3 to 5 times on each side.

Every year, like clockwork, most of us have to book a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) examination to make sure our vehicles are roadworthy.
Sometimes it necessitates repairs, which we instigate because we know it is in the best interests of our safety.
Just like getting a WoF for your car, there are many benefits to having an annual health WoF.
Yearly tests can give you insight into what lifestyle changes you might need to make to increase your quality of life. Keeping on top of your health and being aware of some of your deficiencies may also prevent certain medical conditions and occurrences from happening.
To avoid lengthy waits at your medical centre, you can opt instead to have a variety of tests done at the Cashel Pharmacy. Trained sta can check how you’re tracking on the following.
• Blood Glucose
• Blood Pressure
• Body composition
• Cholesterol
• Fat content
• Muscle content
• Nutritional status
• Phase angle
• Prediction marker
• Water content
With all that information, you will be able to make better, more informed decisions about your health.

One of these is exercise, and not just for your body. Regular exercise can help reduce stress, feelings of anxiety, and symptoms of depression while boosting self-esteem and happiness. Even a small amount of physical activity can make a di erence. You don’t have to train for a triathlon or scale a cli — unless that’s what makes you happy, of course.
Daily exercise has been shown to improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as increasing feelings of happiness, self-esteem, and overall well-being. It also helps improve sleep and cognitive function. Regular physical activity is a key component of maintaining good mental health.

Steve is a fully qualified audiometrist with more than 25 years’ experience, but was made unexpectedly redundant when the clinic he was working for was bought out by a large corporate identity.
Samantha made the bold decision to also leave her job to allow the pair to fully focus on starting their own business, with Steve initially visiting clients in their homes. Samantha became the General Manager, dealing with all the business administration.
One decade later and Hear Again has thriving clinics in Auckland and Christchurch, with a third poised to open in Tauranga this year. Its current clinicians, including Hornby clinic audiometrist Neil Hardisty, are all members of the NZAS (New Zealand Audiological Society) and have a combined 70 years of experience.
“Neil changes lives. He’s very approachable and caring,” says Samantha.
This business prides itself on its customer service and follow-up care.
“It’s the customer care and fine tuning that matters - we don’t just fit hearing aids –we fit them properly.”
Sudden hearing loss should not be left unchecked. “We can do the necessary tests then refer the client onto ENT specialists, if needed,” says Samantha. Alongside fitting aids and providing hearing tests, the clinic also o ers wax removal by micro-suction.
The Hornby clinic celebrates its sixth birthday this year; after chatting with Samantha, it is clear why this business has established such strong roots in the community it serves.
The key benefits of maintaining a healthy spine are better movement, posture, and quality of life.
Ahealthy spine is crucial for overall body stability, posture and protecting the spinal cord. Though often overlooked, the spine plays a crucial role in everyday movements. Neglecting your spine through poor posture or movement can cause pain and even lead to long-term joint damage.
Muscle People, experts in spine care, emphasise the importance of maintaining good posture and movement habits for a healthy spine.
HERE ARE FOUR SURPRISING BENEFITS:
• Proper spinal care helps prevent pain during everyday movements like bending and twisting.
• Poor posture can cause spinal changes, leading to degeneration and joint pain.
• Good posture helps with proper breathing, essential for overall health, energy and quality of life.
• In short, maintaining a healthy spine increases your quality of life, meaning you are able to do the activities you love for many years to come.
MUSCLE PEOPLE’S TOP TIPS: With more than 20 years of experience in physiotherapy, the team at Muscle People has expert tips for di erent positions. While there are many things that you may have been told, their absolute top tip is that our bodies were not designed to stay in one posture for hours on end. We were designed to move.
STANDING:
1. Prolonged standing: If you have to stand for a prolonged period, remember to stand in a good posture. Imagine a string is pulling you up from the head, this will gently straighten your spine, then open up your chest and shoulders.
2. Uphill: If you are walking uphill, rather than leaning forward (as might be
instinctual), place your arm behind your back and walk tall.
SITTING:
1. Positioning: Just like standing, you need to sit up straight with your shoulders gently pulled back and your bottom right back in the chair. Make sure you have a good chair and if needed, add a lumbar roll.
2. Crossing legs: If you like to cross your legs while sitting, make sure to alternate which leg you are crossing to avoid incorrect spinal curvature.
3. Breaks: No one can sit perfectly for eight hours – remember to take regular breaks to loosen your muscles and avoid tension.
4. Do not let pain persist: Muscle People are ready to help get you back to your best. Get in touch today, call 0800 027 194, or book an appointment online.

Mead is an alcoholic honey drink that’s recently gained huge popularity – understandably so, it’s delicious.
While it’s come a long way over the years, the ethos of mead production has remained relatively unchanged since medieval times; that is, using fermented honey as the base.
As you can imagine, mead can be delightfully sweet, but it doesn’t always have to be overbearingly so. Aotearoa is a great spot to create mead as our diverse native flora treats beekeepers across the country to some pretty unique and special flavour profiles.
The team at Buzz Club has created some perfectly balanced flavour profiles, which you’ll find sta serving up at their swish bar on Riverside Market Laneway in
Christchurch. These guys are paving the way for some pretty unreal drinks, focusing on using lesserknown honeys such as New Zealand kāmahi, rātā, and pōhutukawa.
At the bar, you’ll discover an array of delicious varieties available to suit your palete – there’s sweet, but also zesty and fruity for the delight of your tastebuds. Not in Christchurch? Keep your eyes peeled at the supermarket or check out their website. By enjoying NZmade mead, you’re supporting a range of native honeys, which helps to build a sustainable industry that contributes towards the healthy pollination of the pristine Aotearoa environments.

Sometimes, the inevitability of life’s troubles can win, and the day’s stresses can catch up with us before we’ve run a bath or changed into activewear. A small area in your home, set up for those life-is-movingtoo-fast moments can provide the relaxation you need. Consider incorporating these three tips when setting up your safe space.
Warmth and cosiness go hand in hand to produce a comfortable space. Include pillows or blankets to keep you snug,
being mindful of your favourite hues when curating your space’s colour palette. Colours that make you happy have the power to lift your mood. Candles have the ability to generate positive energy and ambience in your space, changing its feel through our senses,.
Making your space feel lived-in is a great way to create comfort. Not only does functionality ease and reduce unnecessary stressors, it can o er notions of habitation to help you relax. Subtle touches such as
coasters for your co ee, and a lamp for reading the latest Metropol, make a space feel easy and soothing, while avoiding feelings of mess or clutter.
A potted plant does wonders to uplift a room’s decor, and has hidden benefits for our wellbeing. Proven to help with mental and emotional stress, plants promote natural and relaxed feelings to lift your spirits. Sometimes, taking care of a plant is the simplest reminder you need to give yourself the same love and care.
Designating a safe space in your home to evoke serenity and calm can help turn a bad day into a good one.
German Bathroom Sector Association managing director Jens J. Wischmann says the show will shine a spotlight on the trends that are boosting a huge growth market with innovations, emotion and bathroom narratives. “In our trend showcase we will be telling the most important stories that can serve as a basis for planning modern bathrooms, as well as providing ideas and inspiration for translating them into reality,” he says.
For the ISH 2023, Pop up my Bathroom is staging a trend exhibition with new products for lifestyle-oriented bathrooms, presenting trend developments for small bathrooms, exploring the options for sustainable bathroom design, building a walk-through wellbeing studio and zooming in on the emotional side of bathroom design.
Here’s a sneak peek at what will be on show:
SUSTAINABLE BATHROOMS
A future concept that strives for the optimal combination of smart, water-saving and energy-saving products, eco-friendly industrial production, sustainable materials and enduring design – while simultaneously conveying a sense of being in touch with nature.
TINY BATHROOMS
The trend towards compact bathrooms for urban homes is prompting the industry and bathroom planners to develop innovative solutions specifically tailored to small spaces. Distinguishing characteristics are a simple aesthetic, new, scaled-down product categories, smart solutions, comfort and convenience, as well as a high degree of customisation.
WELLBEING BATHROOMS
Turning your own bathroom into a private spa comes with the promise of regenerative time out with health-promoting benefits – a little piece of luxury. A wellbeing bathroom comes with both simple and highly complex products like a bathtub or whirlpool (for indoors or out), an infrared sauna or individually programmable showers, classic water applications, a clean aesthetic, smart products for therapeutic lighting and experience-enhancing multimedia features, or a personal space for health-promoting activities.
EMOTIONAL BATHROOM
A feel-good space within the home, combining high tech with high emotion. The real goal of bathroom planning is high emotion – an emotional bathroom design based on colour, light and sensory appeal, achieved by means of sanitaryware and smart equipment, with actual technology hidden behind walls.
Designers from all around the world will converge on Frankfurt, Germany, next month for ISH, the biggest bathroom showroom on the planet.
We don’t just build houses. We build futures.

Asophisticated security system not only deters break-ins, but also provides the business owner with peace of mind outside business operating hours.
Paul McCormick, above right, of Combined Security Solutions, recently inspected and assessed two business sites for Christchurch’s Armstrong Motor Group.
The brief given by Dealer Principal Tim Bennet, above left, was to install a camera system that was easy to use, and which had
capabilities for future expansion to protect sta , facilities, and also the company’s valued clients.
From the first design coverage meeting, Tim says that Paul understood what the business was looking for, and demonstrated the product that would suit its needs.
“The installation was performed afterhours so as to not disrupt work day operations. The commissioning and user training of the camera systems for our two dealerships worked perfectly.”
Tim says the installed systems have been used for necessary security reviews, and also for Health and Safety education.
“Each time the system has proved its worth, providing high resolution footage and coverage that is perfect for our needs. The service provided by the Combined Security Solutions team was fantastic,” Tim adds.

Chess is well suited for incorporating into home decor due to its simple and graphic gameboard and pieces. Chequered patterns have also been a sharply rising trend.
To create a chessboard table, first, prepare and prime the surface with Resene Waterborne Smooth Sealer Surface, then paint it with two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Seashell. Use masking tape to draw the squares and mask o the ones you want to keep white and paint two coats of Resene Double Cod Grey on the unmasked areas.
Once the second coat is dry, remove the masking tape to reveal the chessboard. To make the chessboard part of the overall decor, use both colours in other places in the room, such as through accessories or accents. You can keep the scheme monochromatic or add contrasting accent hues like forest green, lilac, and creamy white to make it more interesting. Make sure to use each accent hue in three places in the room to create a cohesive scheme.
Walls in Resene Triple Merino with hand-painted pinstripes (above mantel) in Resene Double Cod Grey, floor in Resene Kensington Grey, mantel in Resene Raven with painted arch (on wall) in Resene Double Cod Grey and hearth in Resene Half Raven, chess board table in Resene Double Cod Grey and Resene Seashell, bowl (on mantel) in Resene Leather, tall cylindrical vase in Resene Balderdash and other small accessories in Resene Double Cod Grey and Resene Seashell.

Professional, experienced arborists, The Tree People care about trees, believing it to be both an art and a science. Here are some of their water saving tips:
MULCH
• Helps to keep moisture in the soil, and slows evaporation. It helps to reduce weeds, and keeps the soil temperature cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
• Adds nutrients to the soil, helps retain water in sandy soils, and improve drainage in clay soils.
• Provides cover and protection while nutrients break down.
PLANT CHOICE
• Choose drought tolerant trees, or those that have low watering requirements such as natives as they have adapted to survive using natural rainfall amounts.
• Choose plants based on soil type and indigenous vegetation to the area. This website may be a useful resource – ccc.govt.nz/ environment/land/ecosystem-map
• Utilise taller trees and plants to provide shade and shelter to smaller or new plants until they get established.
• Container plants usually dry out faster and will need more frequent water. Choose pots that are glazed so moisture isn’t lost through the sides of the pot. Alternatively use a liner
to provide a barrier that reduces the amount of water lost.
NEW PLANTS
• When planting consider using water storage crystals or gels mixed into the soil as these help to retain moisture and distribute water more evenly.
• New plants (less than 1 year old) will require more frequent watering whilst their root system becomes established. Where possible help them to grow by placing them in areas where other plants will provide some shelter.
• When planting, consider grouping water thirsty plants together to avoid overwatering those that don’t need quite so much water. Planting in groups rather than rows is a more e cient way to water than watering over a long row.
• Add a flat mulch ring around the tree (like a donut). To keep the tree healthy avoid mulching in a mound. Mulch that touches or covers the trunk or stem of the tree may cause decay in the living bark.
• Use irrigation lines or soaker hoses with automated tap timers that aim directly into the soil. Water is quickly evaporated o the leaves meaning very little water reaches the soil and into the roots where it’s needed.
• The best time of day to water is the morning when temperatures are usually cooler. Watering in the morning allows excess water time to dry out and minimises the amount of water sitting in the soil or around the roots. Wet leaves or water-logged roots are more susceptible to a range of diseases.
• Aim for slow watering to encourage roots to grow deep into the soil where the ground is cooler.
• If watering on a slope do so in slower, shorter bursts to allow time for the water to soak in rather than run o .
• To test if your soil needs watering, simply stick a finger into the soil. If the soil is dry two inches below the surface, you need to water, or if you see wilting leaves.
• Now is an ideal time to seek advice from a trusted tree professional.

Central to a flawless kitchen and bathroom are bench tops and vanities that are meticulously designed with hand-crafted finishing. “We don’t run a production line,” says managing director Andrew Crossland of Benchtop Concepts.
“Ex-joiners and stonemasons make up a high proportion of our team of 14. Some of them have been with us since we started, even one of the company’s former owners is on the tools. They really take ownership of their work.
“Our ethos is craftsmanship meets technology, with digital templating coupled with CNC machining, producing perfectly dimensioned tops, to which our sta add beautiful finishings. Also this technology enables us to maximise the yield of materials, thereby ensuring a ordability of the end product.”
Emphasising convenience for tradesmen and homeowners, they are one of only two or three businesses in New Zealand that provide the full range of bench top solutions.
Choices include natural stone, engineered stone, porcelain, acrylic, and high-pressure laminate. The company utilises the best global and national branded products available such as Silestone, Caesarstone, Dekton, Corian and others.
“For example, you may have engineered stone in the kitchen with laminate in the scullery and porcelain bathroom vanities, all of which we can provide. Joiners often send their clients to us to choose from the samples in our modern showroom.”

Located on New Zealand’s rugged South Coast, the windswept site for this small holiday house faces north and gently descends to the dunes.
Winner of the 2022 TIDA New Zealand Architect New Home of the Year, the low grounded home is bedded into the landscape, hunkering down from the harsh coastal weather, while materials and colours are deliberately pared back so as not to compete with the natural environment.
forms colliding; inspired by ocean waves journeying from the distant mountains across the bay and crashing into the shore.
The house itself wraps around a large windswept native beech tree, and opens to reveal views across dunes, the ocean and to snow-capped mountains.
The interior is oriented to make the most of the sun, views and solar gain, with a reduced material palette of two internal linings to match the two external claddings.
Not only is this home designed to be sustainable, with a small environmental impact, it’s also relocatable should sea levels rise.
The TIDA judges felt that this discrete hideaway retreat illustrated how thoughtful design and architecture can make the most of a remote site, and produce a very distinctive home – on a very small budget.

David Reid Homes Queenstown, won the national show home award for the house, which judges say was planned meticulously to create a versatile environment with the ability to entertain.
“Whether it is in the outdoor covered area by the fire, or the living area with full height windows and skylights, which provide uninterrupted views of the Remarkable mountains, there is an impressive attention to detail.
“Quality features throughout can be seen from the moment you arrive at the impressive entranceway. The builder’s workmanship is demonstrated throughout this beautifully appointed show home and it is one that the company is clearly proud to present,” the judges’ citation says.
The thermal e cient, eco-design show home has a pavilion-style layout, with a northerly aspect, clever floor plan, extensive decking and the luxury of a covered outdoor room with fireplace.
The living wing enjoys unobstructed mountain views, while the dramatic timber ceiling, bagged schist fire place and custom kitchen give it a modern alpine feel.
The master bedroom features an elegant mezzanine, and opens out to a secluded cedar hot tub.
This wing also includes two bedrooms, bathroom and separate powder room.

A new British Auto Trader study rates the Porsche 911 top overall eye-catching design, with the BMW 3 Series the best everyday car, and Porsche’s Taycan model coming out as the most ‘eye-catching’ EV.
The Porsche 911 captured the most attention, with an ‘eyecatching score’ of 91 percent, followed by the Lexus LC500 and Ferrari F40.
The study from the UK’s largest automotive marketplace Auto Trader used unique eye-tracking technology to discover which cars are the most attractive to the human eye.
Research participants were asked to look at a series of 40 images of the world’s best-selling car models while their eye movements were tracked, in order to discover which motors captured their attention the quickest, and which held the gaze longest. The two tracking metrics were combined to give each car model its own unique ‘eye-catching’ score.
Luxury cars dominate the top rankings, with 60 percent of the top 10 vehicles being supercars, while electric cars featured just three times in the top 20 most eye-catching car rankings.
In the EV category, the Porsche Taycan was deemed most eye-catching design. Other top 10 EV designs included the Tesla Model 3, MG4 EV, Kia EV6, the MINI Electric and the Audi e-tron.
When it came to which auto captured attention the quickest, the everyday bestseller Toyota Yaris topped the study, showing it took just 1.89 seconds for participants to fixate on the Yaris image on the screen.

Despite its SUV range being its biggest cash cow, and a surge in its all-electric 208e supermini, Peugeot has still decided to give its 308 mid-sized hatch a make-over. Ben Selby reports.
Its new lease on life includes new looks, new tech and new power units.
The range consists of two petrol variants, a plug-in hybrid and from next year, a BEV version.
My test car was the petrol powered 308 GT, which qualifies for a government clean car rebate. The fresh modern design makes for one handsome hatchback.
Its Full Matrix LED headlights, and revised grill sporting a new Peugeot Lion embossed logo, give it a clean cut face, while its 18-inch alloys look great. Plus, that Olivine Green paint scheme is stunning.
Inside you feel cocooned by funky touch buttons and other quality materials. The small heated leather wrapped steering wheel, unique to Peugeot, still has to be moved down to prevent the rim from blocking the instrument cluster, but after a while you get used to this.
Centre stage is a new 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Here you can operate many of the on-board gizmos, and can even add shortcut icons for regularly used features on the centre console, much like a smartphone.
The 308 GT gets ambient lighting, parking sensors fore and aft, USB-C ports,
tinted glass, autonomous engine braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise and lane departure warning. Also featured is an optional Premium Pack, with niceties such as a 10-speaker FOCAL premium sound system, and heated nappa leather front seats with built-in massage function.
The driver’s seat is electric with twoposition memory function. Practicality is also half decent. The 308 GT has a deep boot floor and can hold 417L to 1323L if you drop the second row of seats.
The Pug’s turbo three pot emits a lovely mechanical burble, however, it is not what you would call quick. You won’t be setting any records when getting up to speed.
Regardless, while the 308 GT is no performance machine and on some less smooth tarmac roads there is a smidgen of tyre roar, it is sublime as a comfortable and quiet long-distance cruiser.
Thanks to a supple, comfortable ride, and a good dose of low-end torque, the motorway miles are easily dealt with. In sport mode, you can also have a relatively entertaining jaunt around back roads, thanks to a well sorted chassis and underpinnings.
It’s a bit pricey, but the funky petrol 308 GT still has plenty going for it.

In a two-year project that saw him travel the country, he collected stories from 85 passionate owners about them and their machines,
including the oldest bike in the book — a 1920 AJS Model D7win80. There’s also a host of Triumphs, Ducatis, Royal Enfields, the famous Britten, Moto Guzzis and more.
Kiwi Bikers showcases veterans of the track such as Grand Prix champions Hugh Anderson MBE and Graeme Crosby, along with women’s motocross triple world champ Courtney Duncan, European Junior Cup winner Avalon Biddle, and 17-year-old stunt rider Shontelle Feeney.
