THE BELLEVUE
Discover care without compromise at The Bellevue. Care Suites with Rest Home and Hospital care. Nestled on leafy Windmere Road, you’ll discover one of Oceania’s latest villages, The Bellevue. A beautifully designed and friendly village that is not only close to local shops and restaurants but also boasts its very own on-site café, idyllic gardens, and a hair salon.
The Bellevue resident Marie couldn’t be happier with her luxury Care Suite. “I love my room. I have a little outside patio area. I can boil the jug and make myself a cup of tea. I can entertain friends here. I have miles of photos up, I like having lots of photos around me. It’s nice, pleasant.”
And they’re on a mission to transform the aged care experience and redefine retirement living.
But Oceania’s difference is not just centred around the Care Suites. From having nurses onsite 24/7 to the Guest Services Manager organising fun activities and friendly fellow residents everywhere you go, The Bellevue prides itself on its community aspect. “Oceania really treats people differently,” Marie explains enthusiastically.
Oceania is a leading provider of premium healthcare services in New Zealand and has been part of local communities across New Zealand for over 50 years. They’re also recognised as industry leaders in aged care, winning awards for innovation, food, staff training and community engagement. One of their most successful innovations is their highly acclaimed Care Suites that offer both Rest Home and Hospital care. Designed so residents don’t have to move again, as the rooms can evolve as their needs increase. These Care Suites are designed to feel like home, with private ensuites, living areas and kitchenettes; so residents can entertain friends and family just like they always have. All whilst medical equipment can be discreetly hidden away, giving residents the space to truly make the suite their own. The Bellevue is one of the many Oceania villages to offer these luxury Care Suites for both singles and couples.

Reflecting back to when she first moved to The Bellevue, Marie continues, “Sarah (the Guest Services Manager) got to know me in the first week. We had dinner. She often pops in for a chat or to take me for a walk in the afternoon.” But Marie’s social life isn’t limited to dinner catch-ups. “Sarah gets to know the residents and what they want to do.” Marie explains, “Everyone is different and has different needs. She will arrange things for what we want to do.” Those activities could be something as simple as video chatting with family overseas or organising to meet up with some friends at a show. Either way, residents can sit back and relax as The Bellevue’s Guest Services Manager takes care of the logistics.
Because of this, The Bellevue’s activities calendar is packed with a variety of group and solo pursuits, so residents always have something in the calendar. From hopping in a van to explore an exciting new destination each week, to enjoying some me-time listening to their very own personalised playlist with Oceania’s award-winning I Love Music programme. Then there’s the food. When asked about what the cuisine was like at The Bellevue, Marie can’t help but smile, “The chef here is absolutely marvellous. The puddings are very nice and the chef has a good sense of humour.” The Bellevue’s kitchen is led by a skilled chef with every meal being carefully considered to ensure that taste and nutrition are balanced equally. Even better, each dish that the residents enjoy at The Bellevue is not only up-to-date with culinary trends, but is catered to their personal preferences. The menus are updated every six months, keeping them in season and on-trend, ensuring that dining at The Bellevue is always something to be savoured. With a comfortable home, friendly community and plenty of good food, Marie has found that feeling many of us are searching for, “I wake up every morning and feel good.” Since opening its doors last year, Oceania’s The Bellevue has established an intimate, friendly feeling where every single resident feels right at home. And, with a close-knit team and community, where better to enjoy life in Christchurch, than this vibrant village?

And a Happy New Year We’re all well into the New Year now, and on many fronts hoping that it will be better than the last. I learnt a long time ago that there really is no such thing as

luck. Life is what you make it, and preparedness helps. Remember the Boy Scout motto ‘Be Prepared’? That’s good advice, especially in times of crisis. Of course, we don’t know what lies ahead, however certain events during the last decade should have taught us a few lessons, such as having a ‘go-bag’ ready in case the earth shakes, rattles and rolls, stocking up on a few tinned goods, a roll or six of toilet paper in case of a lockdown, and having a list of emergency numbers. Being prepared is not just for the bad things
that happen in life; it includes preparedness for anything that life throws at you and yours. Setting new goals (short and long term), getting and staying fit, and re-focusing on what matters most to you are terrific ways to start. People set all kinds of personal goals to help themselves grow, such as learning new skills, taking up a craft, or a personal development course. Personal goals often lead to a more fulfilling life, yet setting work goals is also important, helping to ensure professional success. Combined they should equate to a better life.

Future arena design Preliminary design images for the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena (CMUA) are giving people an exciting glimpse into what the future holds for central Christchurch.
rafted by Christchurch-based architects Warren & Mahoney and international stadium design experts Populous, the images show how the CMUA will sit and look on the site. CMUA Project Delivery Ltd Board Chair Barry Bragg says they provide the most accurate picture yet of what the facility will look like once completed. The CMUA will occupy much of the central Christchurch site bordered by Hereford, Barbadoes, Tuam and Madras streets. At 232 metres long, 195 metres wide and 36 metres high at its tallest point, it will have a seating capacity of 30,000 for sporting events and up to 37,800 in concert mode. “We know people are really excited about the prospect of having a covered arena in the heart of the city and we hope these preliminary designs will capture people’s imaginations and give them a glimpse of what is to come. “We are well on the way to delivering Christchurch a world-class covered arena with high-quality acoustics that is capable of hosting top international music concerts as well as major international sporting fixtures,’’ Bragg says. Councillors meet this month to approve the preliminary design package, with the developed design scheduled to be completed by April.

Continuing cricket’s legacy Sir Richard Hadlee with young cricketers Mason, left and Bryden Pearce. 8 20 January, 2022 Metropol
Sir Richard Hadlee is fronting an urgent appeal to raise the final $1.6 million needed to finish the Canterbury Cricket Trust’s (CCT) new state-of-the-art facility being built at Hagley Oval. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch caught up with him to talk past, present and future.
A
n international cricket player for 18 years, Sir Richard has made the sport his life, devoting time now to ensure future generations have opportunities to experience the highs of the game as he did. Cricket, he says, is a superb game in so many ways. “Whilst it is a team game, each player has an individual role to play to complement the team. An inspired individual performance can turn or win a game.” He’s very much a traditionalist of the game, brought up on test cricket played over five days. “It is the foundation on which the game is based – a test of a cricketer’s technical, physical, mental, and tactical ability in different types of conditions and the need to adapt whenever necessary,” he says. “As the game has evolved, one-day cricket, T20 cricket, T10 cricket and the 100 ball game (played in England) has captured the imagination of the players and public. All these formats somehow have to survive and co-exist. “Hopefully, we don’t lose sight of the fact that test cricket is still the main format most players want to aspire to. We must protect this format of the game because of its 200-year tradition and history.” After retiring from playing professional cricket, Sir Richard was the BNZ Ambassador for cricket, then New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chairman
of selectors for the Black Caps for eight years. He previously managed several NZA teams in India, Sri Lanka and Australia, and was on the board of NZC for four years. Although he has relieved himself from all cricket responsibilities and decision making, he continues to watch the game (mainly on TV) and take an interest in other matches around the world. “My main goal now is to have the Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre at Hagley Oval completed so that the next generation of young aspiring cricketers and sportspeople can grow their love of sport and enhance their skills, and become future Black Caps and White Ferns.” His advice to aspiring international representatives is to aim high and aim big. “Dreams can come true. There are career paths in cricket available. “If you have potential I am sure the system will pick you up and help you progress through the grades and transition you into representative teams. From that point on it will require hard work in training and preparation – becoming technically efficient in whatever skill set that excites you – being fit and athletic – having a strong mindset and great work ethic - there are plenty of sacrifices to be made on the way. What are you prepared to give up to chase a dream and get to the top?”
Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre CCT and the Canterbury Cricket Association are aiming to raise the shortfall so the sports centre can be finished in time for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in March 2022. Sir Richard’s trust has donated $800,000 to the facility and he says he’s honoured it bears his name. “This will be one of the best training facilities in the country and will inspire the next generation of cricketers. I am appealing to those who believe in my vision for the centre to support it by donating whatever they can,” says Sir Richard. Featuring five 3.6-metrewide cricket lanes with a 20-metre run-up for the bowler, the centre is being built by Naylor Love, and will meet international cricket standards. When the nets are rolled back the versatile space can be used for other sports including, hockey, netball and football. Donations can be made via hagleyoval.co.nz

Christchurch-raised comedian and actor Chris Parker had a big year in 2021, winning Celebrity Treasure Island and adapting to a new way of working and creating throughout multiple lockdowns. Chris has an exciting year ahead, kicking things off with his nationwide tour this February.
G
rowing up in Canterbury, Chris developed a love of performing from a young age. Heading to Wellington to study at Toi Whakaari was a big step in getting to where he is today in his career. You may have spotted him on screen, having appeared in popular shows including Jono and Ben, 7 Days and Have You Been Paying Attention, as well as a handful of New Zealand films. While he now lives in Auckland,
Christchurch still holds a special place in his heart. “Absolutely I am still very connected to Christchurch. I have loved seeing the city through the rebuild come back to life again, I’m very invested in it.” For many industries, the year just passed was full of challenges, and unforeseen hardship. As a performer living in Auckland, Chris felt the impact of lockdowns and restrictions alongside many others. With cancelled comedy events and tours, Chris was looking for ways to still reach and connect with his audience, and he gravitated towards his social media channels. Short, humorous videos on Instagram became a new outlet. “I asked myself, well what can I do to keep myself entertained? I was mostly doing them for myself, and then a couple of big ones took off.” Playing various characters that were easily relatable seemed to be catching the attention of Kiwis all over the country. As we would wait to hear the weekly press conferences and latest alert level updates, Chris and his characters were also riding the same anxious wave with

us, providing much needed comedic relief to his audience, and himself. “I never want to torture myself with work, so I always make sure I am enjoying what I’m making.” Last year was also full of a different kind of challenge for Chris, as he underwent the gruelling process of competing in Celebrity Treasure Island and ended up coming away with the glorious win. Nine weeks in beautiful Northland competing against well-known Kiwis was no vacation. While physical strength was a factor, anyone watching at home could tell it was the mental game and determination that it all came down to. Chris taking the victory also meant the $100,000 prize money was donated to his chosen charity, Rainbow Youth. He gained the title but also learnt a lot of lessons about himself during the show. “I think we are so quick to define who we are, what we can or cannot do, I’m this and I’m that. The only person who is setting those limits is you. If you take them away, you can pull it off. I think I underestimate myself as a comedian because I’m always the funny one. I learnt I need to stop saying I’m just here as a laugh and actually take it seriously.” His new tour, Gentle Man kicks off in February and will be covering most of the country, arriving in Christchurch on 25 February. It will showcase some of his best material from the past few years, as well as some fresh and new work. He’s referring to it as, “Now that’s what I call Chris Parker.” Many New Zealander’s got to know Chris over the last few years from his viral videos during lockdowns as well as on Celebrity Treasure Island, so he is excited to be ‘back in his natural habitat’ onstage, to reintroduce himself to old fans and new.

Visions of the real Local artist Kees Bruin has seen great success throughout his career, with a multitude of awards, and his work now represented in collections around the world. Metropol catches up with him following his most recent endeavour.
L
ike many artists, Bruin discovered his gift at an early age, winning an art class contest at the age of seven. “Throughout primary and secondary schools, I largely regarded art as a mainstay subject that would help me graduate overall each year. Art then became the subject that propelled me to get a Fine Arts degree. It was only at this time, once I discovered I could paint with personal and public satisfaction, and especially after graduating with honours in 1977, that I began to be seriously drawn to art and creativity.” There is no doubt Bruin’s art is as incredible as it is unique, but it is also very intentional. “The primary reason why I chose the photorealist genre of painting was that I viewed this as the most sensible way to express

any perceived meaningful realities and truths I was concerned with and to reach as wide an audience as possible. Even at this time, I seriously mistrust much about ‘style’ in painting. I want to produce works that are so objectively realistic that even when portraying subject matter ‘style’ is largely redundant.” Bruin’s work is wonderfully varied, each series bringing new and different inspirations. Any Christchurch local would find a lot of familiarity in The Surf, Sea, Skate Series, with the recognisable landscapes of the beach in particular. Bruins explains what this means to him. “Apart from desiring to show respect, thanks, and glory to our Father and Creator for land and seascapes, I simply wish to add my personal interpretation on how these look to me.
What Bruin hopes that people will get from his work. An obvious transmission or feeling (that you can’t put your finger on) that elevates the soul. That they will be sufficiently enticed by beauty, whatever forms they are, to ponder and want to understand any narratives that on the surface are not clearly seen.

Secondly, as a homage to various traditions in art history of where and why the Masters included land or seascapes in their works, such as to pay homage to the district or culture they’re from and to serve as connections that viewers can make to the artists. Thirdly, this is where I have lived most of my life with mainly happy memories coupled with the inherent health advantages that this environment affords, including much pleasure derived from the surf.” Released last December, Kees Bruin: Visions of the Real is an accessible way for people to experience his art, with over 270 reproductions and images. The motivation behind publishing the book started nearly 14 years ago. “Motivation came about soon after the 2006 exhibition of my works, ‘Visions of the real – Illusion and Allusion,’ instigated by and held at the Christchurch Art Gallery. Following
this event, several colleagues and friends suggested I write a book that would ultimately allow me greater control and includes a more comprehensive outline (visually and literarily) of my career as an artist to this point. The first practical steps taken were due to a friend and colleague, John C. Stringer, who suggested I commission him to help write it. Much time and effort were undertaken over the following years, but the consequences of the earthquakes of 2010/11 halted the progress somewhat. “The final significant step that has propelled the book to completion is due to the enthusiasm and tireless efforts of my book publisher Quentin Wilson. Many other enthusiastic supporters, friends, and work-related colleagues have also contributed, notably, Dinesh Patel, who is largely responsible for the final digital files of my images.”
My dearest intent is that people would believe in my work enough to warrant owning one (original or reproduction and or purchasing the book) for pleasure, inspiration, and a sure-founded hope for the future.

Carbon Zero hospital unveiled Forté Hospital in Christchurch has been named New Zealand’s first Toitū carbonzero certified hospital. Koru Photography

We offer peace of mind in retirement
F
orté Hospital operates out of Forté Health, a health precinct built in 2013 in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes. The hospital, which operates out of one of New Zealand’s most environmentallyfriendly buildings, has been certified carbonzero by Toitū Envirocare. “Sustainability has been part of our kaupapa since the idea of Forté Health was born. We wanted to do things differently and show that you didn’t have to choose between looking after people and looking after your planet – you can do both,” says Forté Health Chairman David Barker. While Forté Hospital is the first hospital in Australasia to achieve a four-star green certification through the New Zealand Green Building Council, to achieve Toitū carbonzero certification, sustainability had to be taken to an operational level. Forté’s future sustainability goals include to further reduce its carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 10 percent over the next five years. As part of becoming Toitū carbonzero certified, Forté Health will be offsetting its carbon footprint by planting trees at Spray Point Station in South Marlborough, at Puhi Peaks Station and Nature Reserve in Kaikōura and at the Hinewai Reserve, Banks Peninsula.

CERT NZ is urging Kiwi organisations to tighten up the way they enable remote working for staff to avoid a ransomware attack.
G
overnment cyber security agency, CERT NZ says the majority of ransomware attacks occur through poorly configured remote access systems, which businesses use to allow staff to access systems from outside the office. While there are several systems in use, one of the most commonly used is Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), with more than 2500 identified in New Zealand. RDP has several weaknesses, which means when it is used over the internet it can be exploited by attackers, and is a leading contributor to the ransomware incidents that CERT NZ receives. “It’s essential that organisations make sure these systems are as secure as they can be. You may need to talk to your IT
team or service provider about how to do this,” says Michael Shearer, Principal Advisor – Threats and Vulnerabilities at CERT NZ. CERT NZ is partnering with internet service providers to contact organisations that use internet-exposed RDP to provide advice on how they can make remote working more secure. “Regardless of what technology organisations use to enable remote working, it’s important to keep your system up to date and enable two-factor authentication for logins.” As RDP is often exploited by attackers to gain access to an organisation’s network, CERT NZ recommends organisations consider other options to enable remote
working, such as a virtual private network (VPN). Good VPN solutions support twofactor authentication, which adds an extra layer of security, and are designed to be used over the internet. More broadly, CERT NZ is concerned about the growing impact ransomware attacks are having on New Zealand. “Recent events have brought to light the devastating effects a ransomware attack can have on an organisation. There’s been an increasing trend of these types of attacks globally over the past 18 months, and they’re only going to continue,” says Shearer. CERT NZ will soon be releasing more guidance for organisations about how to protect against ransomware. www.linkedin.com/company/certnz/

t’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki OgdenO’Fee. “Just because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.”
While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!” www.vforhair.co.nz

Hula your way to fitness Weighted hula hoops have come out as one of the biggest international fitness trends this year.
O
ther trends gaining plenty of enthusiasts include ZUU, stroller fitness, reverse running and trapeze classes. They were revealed in a new study by UK-based PureGym, which analysed worldwide Google search data for over
100 different fitness trends to calculate the increase in interest in the time between now, and the same period last year. Largely thanks to going viral on TikTok recently, weighted hula hoops have seen the biggest spike in interest heading into 2022. ZUU, the brain-child of Aussie fitness guru Nathan Helberg, that uses movements inspired by the animal kingdom to give a challenging full body workout, wasn’t far behind, proving more popular than other big fitness trends such as CrossFit and Boxercise. The trend to workout at home because of Covid-19 was found to be declining, with interest in the likes of ‘online workouts’ dropping by 64 percent, according to the survey results. The findings also showed that this year many who exercise regularly will be mixing up their routines by merging them with other interests or activities. Plogging, which benefits both your health as well as the planet by picking up litter while you run, is one example, while ‘beer yoga’ is also on the up, a trend that is exactly what it says on the tin: a yoga session featuring an ice-cold pint.

Longer lives tied to physical activity New research shows why people live longer, and it’s likely because they are more physically active.
R
esearchers from Harvard University in the USA used evolutionary and biomedical evidence showing that people, who evolved to live many decades after they stopped reproducing, also evolved to be relatively active in their later years. The researchers say that physical activity later in life shifts energy away from processes that can compromise health and toward mechanisms in the body that extend it. ExerciseNZ chief executive Richard Beddie says the exercise industry always knew physical activity was excellent for people’s longevity, but now they
know why because of this research. “The Harvard researchers hypothesise that people evolved to remain physically active as they age, and in doing so to allocate energy to physiological processes that slow the body’s gradual deterioration over the years. “This guards against chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers. “Their paper is the first detailed evolutionary explanation for why lack of physical activity as humans age increases disease risk and reduces longevity,” Beddie says.

Hit the trail North Canterbury is home to a growing number of cycle trails, suitable for all ages. Here are some to try next time you’re in the area. Amberley to Leithfield
8.3km, 1 hour Stage 1 of the Amberley Area Cycle Trails (AACT) is open so you can now cycle, walk or run safely between Amberley and Leithfield without needing to use State Highway 1. Starting near the Old Leithfield Hotel the trail crosses the usually dry Kowai Riverbed, passes through a scenic farm, then follows Stockdills Rd, on to Grays Rd, past the Recycling/Transfer Station, to the corner of State Highway 1 and Grays Rd. An alternative to the Grays Rd, Stockdills Rd, and Riverlea Farm route is to cross the Kowai on the downstream side of the SH1 bridge and use Hursley Terrace and Amberley Beach roads to enter Amberley.

3.6km, 20 min The trail to the beach starts on the banks of the Kowai River, upstream at Terrace Rd. It then crosses under SH1 and continues on down the banks of the Kowai River to its mouth, running south from there behind the sand dunes to the small coastal settlement. An off-road lime chip path connects the beach alongside Kings Rd back to SH1 at Pukeko Junction.

Fruity summer delights Stone fruit is one of the great joys of summertime.
P
eaches, nectarines, plums, apricots; there is no need to mess with the delectable flavours of these beauties, which can be enjoyed fresh all summer. If you want to create stone fruit magic in the kitchen, the options are deliciously endless. So too are ways to use excess fruit if you have a generous tree that provides more than your household can eat.
Desserts, spreads, jams and salads can all hero the sweet and fruity flavours. An array of stone fruits will work in sweet treats and desserts. Classic favourites include mixed fruit crumbles, peach tarts and plum cake. Jams, sauces and spreads are ideal for using up fruit, and also make a lovely homemade gift. Try an apricot jam,
plum sauce or a mixed fruit chutney. For summer evenings around the barbecue, you can’t beat a salad with fresh produce and grilled stone fruit. Adding a beautiful caramelisation, grilling peaches and nectarines will bring vibrance and sweetness to any summer salad. Combine with a sprinkle of feta or goats cheese for a match made in heaven.

A true Greek delight A whole lot of passion and love goes into creating the Greek destination that is The Athens Yacht Club. Beautiful food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere make the restaurant a standout in Christchurch’s dining scene, that has people coming back time and time again.
I
ts specialty is Greek cuisine, offered with professional service and a family vibe. Owners Emilios and Rebecca Kotzikas offer comfort food that encapsulates the Greek way of life. “Real Greek food from the heart; it’s all about passionate chefs, quality ingredients, and traditional recipes dating back hundreds of years,” says Emilios. “It is about culture, comfort, family, and life itself. We strive to bring you the total Greek experience with affordable quality, authenticity, and hospitality being our top priority.” Aside from the passionate owners and caring staff, diners join this extended family, soaking up the relaxed atmosphere, the wonderful service,
and most of all the delicious food. Seduced by “Greek food fit for the gods”, and by generous portions, diners never leave unsatisfied or hungry. Sourcing local produce and premium meat and fish, the carefully curated menu celebrates fresh and vibrant ingredients, bringing the authentic flavours of Greece to Christchurch. Some of the menu heroes include the cheese saganaki – flamed Greek cheese with honey, oregano, and metaxa, the slow roasted pork belly with full crackling, carrot puree, fennel eggplant and dill relish, the 1.2kg slow roasted Te Mana lamb shoulder, the stuffed eggplant, the prawn saganaki, the two new ‘specialty salads’ and one of the new desserts, the namelaka - white

chocolate and yoghurt, caramelised filo with freeze-dried raspberries. Thank goodness Greek food is made to share because choosing just one meal is no easy task! And it’s not just the food menu that will have you spoiled for choice. Athens’s new beverage list features an array of carefully selected New Zealand wines, speciality cocktails and craft beers. The wine list celebrates the amazing winemakers of Canterbury and the wider South Island, some North Island gems, as well as a few delicious international options. For those wanting to celebrate a special occasion there is also a large range of beautiful Champagne options that cover both ends of the price spectrum. This move towards a more locally curated wine list was important to Emilios. He not only wants to support our local industry, he wants more people to realise how good our local wines really are and to offer an array of wines that are not readily available in stores, showcasing some of the world-class offerings that New Zealand winemakers produce. The craft beer selection is from a local
favourite, Cassels Brewing Co, and the cocktail list has Greek-inspired creations sure to delight everyone’s taste buds. Emilios and Rebecca believe that dining out should be a memorable experience, every time. This is at the core of what they strive to offer everyone that walks through the door. Serving beautiful food, created with passion is a big part of that, but so too is the hospitality they deliver which creates a true point of difference. “People forget what hospitality means. For us, it’s loving each person that walks in the door and treating them the way
they should be treated. We look after them, greet them with a smile, and make sure they have a great experience.” Because of this, stepping through the club doors is like becoming part of one big happy Greek family. Calling all seafood lovers, March is the month to remember. To celebrate Bluff Oyster season, The Athens Yacht Club will again be hosting a Bottomless Bluff Oyster and Champagne event. Definitely one to put in your calendar. Open seven nights from 5pm until late, bookings are essential so don’t delay and book your table today.

Lemongrass mussels Courtesy of Everdure by Heston
Ingredients Coconut reduction • 2g cardamom pods • 40g lemongrass • 1 kaffir lime leaves • 2g coriander seeds • 400g coconut milk • 160g coconut cream Mussels and mussel juice • 500g mussels • 100g white wine
Mussel ‘stew’ • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1 garlic clove, peeled and finely chopped • 5g fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated • 1g Thai chilli, finely chopped • 85g onion, peeled and finely chopped • 90g red pepper, finely chopped • 150g reserved mussel juice • reserved coconut reduction • reserved mussels • 5g basil • 1 lime, zest and juice
Method 1.
2.
3.
For the coconut reduction, start by crushing the cardamom pods and chopping the lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. Add to a hot pan, along with the coriander seeds and toast until fragrant. Add the coconut milk and coconut cream and reduce the mixture to approximately 100g. Set aside to keep warm. In the meantime, add the mussels and white wine to a very hot pan and cover with a lid, allowing the mussels to steam for 2-3 minutes. Give the pan a shake, add 50g water and place the lid back, steaming for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain the mussels, reserving the juices. Discard any unopened mussels. To finish the mussel ‘stew’ heat the oil in a large pan over moderate heat and add the garlic, ginger and chilli and gently sweat for 1-2 minutes. Add the onion, red pepper and coconut reduction and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly. Allow the mixture to reduce for an additional 3 minutes. Add the reserved cooked mussels, and stir in the basil, lime zest and lime juice and season as needed with sea salt.

Beautiful baches WORDS BY LYNDA PAPESCH
From beachside cottages handed down through generations to cosy caravans, custom built hideaways and fold-out designer container homes, baches are part of the Kiwi psyche. Long weekends, holidays and overnight breaks are all excuses to up sticks and head for a bach. Usually located by the sea, river, lake or forest, baches are all about relaxing and enjoying nature. Here are some ideas for keeping your home away from home walk-in ready all the time.
Light equals bright
No matter what age or style, white always looks good on interior walls. Use light colours for accents and furnishings too, and your cosy hideaway will always look fresh and clean. Blues look great at the beach, along with serene green and most pastel colours. Remember too that dark colours absorb more heat than lighter colours, indoors and out.
Keep it simple
The idea of a relaxing getaway doesn’t include heading down there to do the housework and ground maintenance 24/7 so factor that in. Keep gardens and lawns low maintenance, and interiors user-friendly. Think wooden or vinyl floors with scatter rugs inside, with grasses and natives outside or no landscaping at all.
Stock up on supplies
Fit out your holiday home with its own bedding, towels, linen, kitchen utensils, and a small pantry full of basic cooking essentials. Keep a holiday wardrobe there too. That way there’s no need to waste hours getting ready to go away on holiday; just grab a few fresh supplies and head off, knowing most of what you need will be there already.

hether you need a relaxing spot to practise yoga or an organised area for your DIY supplies, chances are you don’t actually need four walls surrounding you to get the job done. Most of us have some space – be it a corner, closet, alcove or niche beneath our stairs – that can be reclaimed where we can create a special zone dedicated that’s just for us without taking up an entire room. Show off your DIY skills by creating a craft room in a reclaimed corner of your home. Like many other creative people, there are probably a whole bunch of different crafts you like to take part in – and that means you’ll need plenty of different types of storage solutions to keep all your supplies organised. Open shelves are a great option for pretty or inspiring items, or those you
use most frequently, while hooks and pegboards are great for tools that can be hung or spools of ribbon. Upcycled glass jars are ideal for smaller, loose items. You can colour code them by painting each lid first in Resene Smooth Surface Sealer and then two coats of a different Resene testpot colour that goes with your palette. To give our jars extra character, we painted large wooden beads in contrasting hues and glued one to the top centre of each jar. We also measured 10cm up from the bottom of our jars and masked them off using high quality painters masking tape. A basecoat of Resene Smooth Surface Sealer went on next, and once it was dry, we painted them with two coats of a third Resene testpot. That way, we could still easily see what was inside – and how much of it was left – but it allowed us to bring a little more colour to our space.
Rather than keeping our Resene Rice Cake walls plain, we painted a full circle in Resene Twine and a half circle in Resene Dust Storm. There are probably plenty of other things around the house that could find new use in your craft room, too. Or, look to the kitchen or bathroom organising aisle for other smart storage solutions. Try painting a large plant pot or umbrella stand to house rolls of wallpaper. A towel rack or ladder could be just the thing to keep your already ironed quilting fabric smooth and within easy reach. You never know; that old spice rack or makeup caddy could be just the thing to keep your beads or embroidery thread collection manageable.

In the same vein, the Linn Majik DSM has been designed for supreme performance. If you plug some $50 speakers you bought off Wish into it, you’re completely wasting your time. The Majik DSM is a powerful combination of network music player, pre-amp and power amp. It will connect to and stream almost any audio source you want to throw at it. With wired, or WiFi, Bluetooth and direct input via the many input ports in the rear, you can plug your TV, turntable, Sky Box, gaming console, Apple TV, and more into the unit and

The Majik DSM has built-in Space Optimisation, meaning the unique characteristics of your room are taken into account and no matter where your speakers are placed, the system’s performance will be personalised for your listening pleasure. As mentioned, if you’re not already set up with some premium speakers, then you’re going to want to invest in quality. Linn’s Majik 109 Bookshelf Speakers are the perfect match to sit alongside your DSM and are available in several colours, so you’re sure to find one that matches the decor of your entertainment space.

Forward thinking architecture When the Covid-19 pandemic hit New Zealand in mid-2020, Alan and Jordy Mayne decided to take matters into their own hands and established their company Boutique Architecture.
T
heir forward-thinking paid off. Specialising in unique meticulously crafted architecture, Boutique Architecture is committed to providing one-off homes that are specific to individual client’s sites and lifestyles. The key players in the business are husband and wife duo, Alan and Jordy. Alan has been in architecture since 2011. When the earthquakes hit Christchurch that same year, Alan knew that if this was a career path that he wanted to succeed in, he would have to evolve with the city. His wife Jordy has a high-performance sports background which helps add into the methodology that the building process is a true team effort. Close client connection, relaxed natural light, comfort and quality are the hallmarks of their designs. “We have been incredibly fortunate that the market has remained busy and to have fantastic clients that chose us to be a part of their building adventure,” says Alan.
The largest point of difference is that Boutique Architecture provides high quality and crisp 3D renders and movie walkthroughs. They don’t expect everyone to be able to read floor plans that can sometimes seem complicated to clients and have found that providing movies for them takes out a lot of the guesswork. They know that a Monday to Friday 9-5 operation doesn’t work for everyone, so they make themselves available whenever their clients are. What’s next for Alan and Jordy in 2022? They have had a range of renovations and new builds and are excited to share some stunning photos of their completed projects soon. “It’s extremely humbling to work with our amazing clients and create their dream homes,” Alan states. “Whilst we create our clients’ vision, we have great relationships with some fantastic engineers and builders who put the pieces of the puzzle together.” www.boutiquearchitecture.co.nz Metropol 20 January, 2022 53
year of the
welcome to the
tiger
Happy New Year and welcome to 2022, the Year of the Tiger, which is my Chinese Zodiac sign and one that sums up a number of my characteristics – but more on that later. I love the start of a new year. It allows me to unceremoniously let go of anything that preceded it and then welcome in the next with a sense of promise and renewal. If a year has been exceptional, I review it in the expectation of repeating some of the best moments. And if it’s been like the last two, a mixed bag of drama and challenges, I try to chalk it up to experience and put it all in the ‘impossible to imagine’ category. Think earthquakes, Covid and lockdowns. Being a natural optimist, I love the thought of what lies ahead and I’m very curious about the potential influence of the Tiger on the year to come. Yes, I know some of you will think this is crazy, but one of the most populous and powerful nations in the world places great faith in this and deeply respects its teachings, as do many of our Chinese sales consultants. Researching the Chinese horoscope, I’m told Tigers are brave, confident, unpredictable, outspoken and prone to taking risks. So, let’s look at what this could mean in 2022. Real estate brings considerable forces into play and these are constantly being discussed, debated and extrapolated around dinner tables, in boardrooms, at the beach over summer and on the television every night.
Everyone has something to say and the most prolific dialogue, to be fair, often comes from the armchair critic or theorist rather than those closest to the market itself. Here are some of my thoughts on the real estate market. You might say it’s neither outspoken nor unpredictable, but I think it’s always brave to put your name to your beliefs, so here are mine: There’s likely to be a cooling down in some areas of the market. Whether that’s a full freeze or a gentle dial-back of some prices is yet to be determined, but the current frenzy can’t continue unabated. But who really knows? Experts are at odds about where the market will go from here and forecasts range from the ANZ predicting a 4 per cent fall to property data businesses pitching opinions based on continued price increases! No wonder we get confused, and that’s before you consider the effect of supply shortages on new builds and increasingly stringent scrutiny from lenders on the affordability of loans for purchasers. This has been given the very appropriate name of ‘Stress Testing’. There’s also the relaxing of subdivision rules and criteria by the government, meaning some of the prices previously paid for land deemed R.S.D.T. (Residential Suburban Density Transition) and R.M.D (Residential Medium Density) are unlikely to be repeated due to the increased availability of property that can now fit these requirements. And then there are evolutions occurring within some market sectors, with two standouts worthy of mention.

The first, and this is based on my own marketplace observations, is that there is no such thing as a street, area or address that doesn’t have potential. I could name (though I won’t!) streets that were once considered deeply undesirable and unsaleable … but no longer. Everywhere, every property, no matter its look or condition, has a buyer and an upside, so don’t be put off. I’ve seen first-hand in our auction room the results for properties considered unlikely to sell, scooped up by those who are brave enough to take their chances at prices that leave room to breathe and then add value. And secondly, there’s a new market emerging. The higher end of the market is definitely getting higher; properties with values of $8 million to $15 million are emerging in our city. Yes, we are coming of age and in some leafy suburbs there’s a lot of building happening. But as big as this is, it merely aligns us with what’s happening in the rest of New Zealand. So, what to do? How about taking a lesson from the Tiger? Let’s all be brave, confident and occasionally outspoken – and take some good risks. All the best, we’ve got this year!

Native versus exotics what to choose? WORDS BY CHERYL COLLEY
There’s been an ongoing debate for quite some time about the merits of native versus exotic plantings.
I
t’s a debate which has been especially strong in Christchurch with its tradition of exotic and colourful azaleas and camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias as compared with our seemingly rather plain and less flamboyant natives. Taking a definitive side in this debate is rather dangerous, but let’s at least try to be a bit objective and look at both sides of the argument.
The case for natives
Many reasons exist for using native plants. It’s all about conserving, restoring and cherishing our native flora, which needs all the help it can get. Numerous cities around the world now use ecology and nature conservation as the primary criteria for selecting plants, to reinforce identity and placemaking. In Christchurch that approach would be in harmony with the concept of a ‘green’ city and sustainability. The native plant lobby argues that [for them] introducing exotic

species into foreign surroundings has compromised the natural interactions between plant and animal species and their physical environment. They argue such practices are as bad as habitat destruction and the ultimate threat to native plants – their extinction. Staunch proponents of natives over exotics might even go so far as to say that planting exotics out of their own environment is akin to man arrogantly attempting to be dominant over nature. This is one debate where some people take a very hard line!

Considering exotics
There is little doubt that exotic plants give colour and seasonal interest, as well as attracting birds and pollinators. Exotic plants excite people for their uniqueness, showy flora and rich variety. That really is the fundamental reason for having them in our gardens and why past generations planted so many of them in our city’s public places.
Is there a middle-ground?
For a Christchurch garden context, a blend of native and exotics will produce a better aesthetic and a richer garden story.
A Landcare Research study found that many Christchurch residents want to see a balance between native and exotic vegetation in the city. What is that balance? Certainly plant the exotic species in your garden because that is what Christchurch is known for, but if you don’t plant natives because you don’t like the
way they look, be encouraged to look at them again. Many gardeners are inexperienced with native plants and have not seen what can be done with them. Native plants have texture, look good and are there in the winter – and yes some of them offer flowers too. If you look closely you will be hard pressed to find many residential garden plantings that are completely composed of either all native or all exotics. For a Christchurch garden context, a blend of native and exotics will produce a better aesthetic and a richer garden story. As for plantings in public spaces however - along streets and river banks and in parks that really is where we can make a statement with appropriate native species to enrich our garden city and restore a more natural historic beauty.

Kindness and goodwill
It’s hard to write a welcome back to work message ahead of the summer break. At the time of writing, I didn’t know what I was going to be doing other than reading a pile of books I have amassed over the year. It doesn’t matter whether I ended up leaving town for a few days or not, reading is always a happening thing over the holidays. I love the opportunity to relax that this time offers, and although my usual trip to the Coromandel is off my schedule this time, relaxing is what I intend to do. This was my last Christmas as Mayor of Christchurch. Although the last two years have been particularly challenging for us all, it has been a true honour and privilege to hold this role as
we have navigated our way through all the challenges we have had to face. I can’t say that the alert levels and now traffic lights have been easy for anyone, not least of all the event organisers that had to make an early call on whether to proceed or not. Let us hope for better times ahead in 2022. And may we avoid the worst aspects of this global pandemic that we can see play out in different parts of the world, while treating each other with kindness and goodwill.
Look after others
What a bizarre year 2021 was. In its aftermath, many of us, during some well-deserved and much needed time out, will have reflected on the year past, and what it has meant to us all. Very few would have anticipated the way things played out. The race to vaccinate as many as possible in anticipation of the inevitable arrival of Covid-19 in our community has been a remarkable shift from the determined elimination strategy that was playing out earlier in the year. The change in dynamics in our communities and the ramifications for healthcare are enormous, and not yet fully understood. What is clear, as we embark on 2022, is that the game is going to continue to change and we will be faced with new and difficult challenges.
Ensuring members of our wider community, and particularly the most vulnerable members, are well protected is essential. The additional pressures faced by the health system will have wider consequences on the delivery of all health services. This puts us all under an obligation to do what we can as individuals to keep the pressure off the system by really looking after ourselves, actively pursuing wellness, and taking time out to take extra care of the most vulnerable in our community. Those sound to me like great goals for 2022.

A busy year ahead
Happy new year
Rounding out 2021 with the opening of Te Pae Christchurch was fantastic, and now the team at Ōtākaro Limited is looking forward to showing you what is inside.
Already 2022 is shaping up to be another year of change, with central government policies tackling immediate economic headwinds such as our slow economic bounce-back, immigration, a slowing China, tourism and inflation.
Come and see this amazing new venue during our upcoming public open day, on Sunday 13 February. Thousands of people turned out for similar days at Tūranga, the Town Hall and the Justice Precinct in recent years, so we have no doubt the people of Christchurch will come out in force for the tour. Granted, the latter was helped by offering a hopefully rare opportunity to see a jail cell, but Te Pae Christchurch will be home to many public events for years to come. Another milestone we are looking forward to reaching in the early stages of this
year is the installation of the five towering hydroslides at Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, as we look to complete the bulk of the facility’s remaining construction this year. Troubles with trans-Tasman travel prevented us from getting the eel-like tubes up on the Antigua St and St Asaph St corner last year, but our eagerness to show them off to you has not diminished. We’ll also complete another Anchor Project by the end of 2022, with construction of the final section of the South Frame soon getting underway.
Other big issues will be climate change, industrial relations and three waters reforms, the overhaul of the RMA, and the compulsory Fair Pay Agreements. It would be good to see Government take some pressure off with a pragmatic approach to immigration and getting skills into New Zealand to support business activity. At a regional level, we are on a relatively strong footing. Our economic activity has been robust, retail spending bounced back strongly last year and net exports remain strong.
We are also looking forward to events at Te Pae now that it is open, SailGP, the ICC Women’s World Cup, and the return of international events including Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival and Snoop Dogg. There is also the local election in October. Then it will be important to elect a council able to build on existing strengths, one with a willingness to incorporate new approaches and above all an enabler of business. We also look forward to (we hope) to the borders re-opening.

Construction is well underway on the new Rolleston Fields development.
T
he $85 million development is being built in four stages over five years. A mixed-use development, it will cater to a wide range of experiences – from food and beverage, health and wellness, retail, office and co-working spaces, plus public exploration and play areas. The goal is to deliver an award-winning town centre for the people of Selwyn. Caroline Cooper-Dixon and Lilly Cooper of the successful Tennyson55 developments have collaborated with Selwyn Council Urban Planners,
Thom Craig and PRAU Studio Architects, IZZARD Hospitality Architects, awardwinning builders Armitage Williams and placemaking and branding specialists Studio South. Health and wellbeing and eatery precincts are part of the design created by Craig, PRAU, and Izzard. The eatery area includes an inviting outdoor space and covering, so dining al fresco can be enjoyed all year-round. In the wellness centre, tenants include: O-Studio, contemporary gym Flex
Rolleston, Motus Health physiotherapy, and Embrace Skin & Beauty, while eateries will include Burger Fuel, Lone Star, and a Majestic Tea Bar. The Health and Wellbeing Precinct designed by IKON has a world-class boutique health focus. From engaging fitness classes that will utilise the outdoors on the green, saunas and ice baths for those looking for modern holistic therapies, and a spa for somewhere just to relax and unwind, with a facial or massage.

The project received $6.5 million from the New Zealand Government’s Shovel Ready Project Fund, with the remaining cost to be covered by insurance and land sales from the organisation’s earthquake-damaged facilities, as well as a fundraising campaign.
In addition to providing accommodation and transport services, the Cancer Society provides education and support services for cancer patients and their families. The organisation also undertakes national and regional health promotion and prevention programmes as well as coordinating and funding cancer research. When council buildings close, communities lose access to spaces to meet, socialise and access services, which can impact social and economic wellbeing.
F
ive years on from the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, a new decision-making framework is being launched to help councils navigate their legal obligations around managing earthquake-prone council buildings. The introduction of the Building (Earthquakeprone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016, alongside the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015, led some territorial authorities to rapidly close council buildings that were below 34 percent of the new building standard (NBS). This was despite there being no explicit legal requirement to suspend occupancy. The research that underpins the decision framework was undertaken after establishing differences in territorial authorities’ understanding of legislation relevant to earthquake-prone council buildings. The new framework addresses the fact that some territorial authorities lack a formal documented process for making public policy decisions about earthquake-prone council buildings. The BRANZ-led project was a collaboration with Resilient Organisations, Kestrel Group, the University of Canterbury’s Institute of Law, Emergencies and Disaster (LEAD), and Massey University’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research. Several councils were involved in co-designing the framework by sharing information about who
made the decisions, what the key drivers were and how engineering risk information was interpreted, evaluated, and acted upon. BRANZ social scientist and project lead Michael Nuth says the framework helps weigh-up all the risks and benefits associated with whether to close a council building. “The framework gives consideration to factors such as the number of building occupants, the average time spent in the building, and the duration the building will be occupied while earthquakeprone. In addition, it brings in the social and economic consequences of closure. “It’s been a highly collaborative project with expertise coming from a range of project partners, as well as several councils. We really hope all councils will find the framework useful in their decision making,” says Mr Nuth. The framework consists of five steps that generally align with the international standard for risk management (IS0 31000), stepping users through the risk identification, assessment and treatment phases of risk management. It can be downloaded at the BRANZ website: www.branz.co.nz

Architectural Meet, Greet & Eat
If you’re building or renovating, ArchiPro’s “Meet, Greet & Eat” is a must attend event, with the inaugural South Island event being held in Christchurch on Friday 4 March.
N
ow in its sixth edition, ArchiPro’s “Meet, Greet & Eat” is a national event that shines a light on the state of the architecture and building industry. Underscoring its strong links with quality design is a deep-rooted commitment to only showcasing trusted products and professionals. An exhibition devoted to cuttingedge design products and creative concepts, it was launched in 2016 as a vehicle to seamlessly connect aspiring home builders or renovators with trusted products and professionals, ensuring a national benchmark for those embarking on a building journey. More than 1200 homeowners and professionals attend the
evening each year, but spaces are limited and attendance registration is essential. “If you’re building or renovating, the Meet, Greet & Eat is coming to the South Island for the first time and is an unmissable opportunity to have New Zealand’s design community at your fingertips,” says ArchiPro Founder and CEO Milot Zeqiri. “From brands and retailers, to builders, interior designers and architects shaping New Zealand’s most iconic buildings, this is your chance to connect.” This event is designed specifically for homeowners to attend with the intention of finding an architect, builder or interior designer and to meet specialist product suppliers with a profile on ArchiPro.
Event details:
Date: Friday 4 March 2022, 5pm to 9pm Venue: Te Pae, 188 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch

Open day at Te Pae Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, officially opened prior to Christmas, will be on show for the public to check out on Sunday 13 February.
T
he first new-generation convention centre in New Zealand, Te Pae offers worldleading conferencing technology required for modern events. With a 2000-person capacity, the facility already has about 100 confirmed events in its first 12 months, including more than 50 multi-day conferences that will collectively bring more than 70,000 people to the city. Estimates are that it will inject about $60m per year into the
local economy, with international conferences anticipated to generate more visitor spending than some international sporting events. Reflecting the region’s bicultural heritage, the completed Te Pae holds its own as a piece of civic architecture in the ongoing re-mending of the city. Its design embeds craft, cultural meaning and a sensitivity to the place of Ngāi Tūāhuriri / Ngāi Tahu, with the exterior wrapped in a fluid façade of nearly 43,000 tiles, evoking the expansive braided rivers whose fast-flowing waters formed the Canterbury Plains. Built and designed by CPB Contractors, Woods Bagot with Warren and Mahoney, and Kamo Marsh, Holmes Consulting, WSP and Tonkin & Taylor, in consultation with Matapopore, the centre cost almost $450m. It represents the Government’s single biggest contribution to the regeneration of Christchurch. Metropol 20 January, 2022 75
