From the Editor Kia kaha Ōtautahi. Once again Covid-19 has shown the fragility of life and the uncertain times in which we live. The latest outbreaks have brought with them more tough times for people, businesses and organisations, yet it has also brought people closer together again. The stay safe, be kind, and look after one another messages that helped define Kiwis during the 2020 lockdown have risen to the fore again, even though some edicts have not been taken to heart by everyone. Despite the scare, Covid complacency has already set in again in Christchurch with many non-exempted people not wearing masks in public places, on buses etc. Social distancing too appears to have gone out the door as our Alert Levels have dropped. A growing percentage of people,

especially the younger generations, are electing not to be vaccinated. Certainly it is their right to choose vaccination or not, just as it is the right of companies such as Qantas to choose not to carry passengers on its airline unless they have been vaccinated. Various other airlines have also introduced the no vaccination/no fly rule, so if you do want to fly in the future, you will need to adapt. One of the lessons Covid-19 has brought with it is the need to adapt. No-one likes having to conform, but there are times when Metropol Circulation needs must and this is one of them. To bring Covid-19 under control means following the rules and doing what you’re asked to do. A vibrant new road mural is brightening up Christchurch’s red zone, with the artist Dr Suits hoping it will help encourage people to explore the space.

A

n abstract artwork, Crossings, painted on Burwood’s Corserland Street – a road that leads through a range of public activities facilitated by landowners Toitū Te Whenua LINZ and leaseholders Life in Vacant Spaces. The mural features geometric shapes that play on the way that roads remain in the red zone despite the absence of the houses they once served. A collaboration between Dr Suits and arts facilitators Watch this Space, it’s one of a series of creative additions to a nine-hectare area known as East x East. “It heightens the impact of the road markings to a more purely aesthetic level, while also

encouraging the viewer to enter the work and play across its shapes and lines,” says Watch this Space’s Dr Reuben Woods. “It also plays on the natural environment by aligning with the shadows cast by nearby power poles.” The road mural is complemented by another 80s-inspired artwork by local artists Porta and Bols – the latest addition to their ‘Power Up!’ interactive installation. Painted onto a shipping container, the new artwork uses a pixelated style reminiscent of a video game screen, inviting people to play the nearby ‘Power Up!’ treasure hunt game.

Top chefs at Cancer Society fundraiser Three award-winning Canterbury chefs will entertain guests at the Cancer Society Canterbury-West Coast Division’s fundraising dinner event “Too Many Cooks” at the Majestic on Durham on Saturday October 9.

W

e wanted to take the traditional fundraising dinner and add something special,” the Division’s Manager for Fundraising, Communications and Relationships, Heather Locke says. “We approached Jimmy McIntyre (Executive Chef at Otahuna Lodge), Darren Wright (former Head Chef at Chillingworth Road) and Andrew Brown (former Executive Chef at the George Hotel) and were delighted that they all agreed to be involved,” Locke says. Guests at “Too Many Cooks” will enjoy a delicious three-course meal, which they will be able to see the chefs preparing live

on stage, while MC Michele A’Court keeps everyone on their toes with her witty banter. During the evening there will also be an auction of rare and original items including a one-of-a-kind sculpture and a central city parking space for a year. “This unique event would not be possible without the support of our principal sponsor Cook Brothers Construction, and we are hugely appreciative of their generosity,” Locke says. “Each year, 500 New Zealanders receive the unwelcome news that they have cancer.

But while cancer doesn’t stop for Covid-19, lockdowns have severely limited our ability to fundraise during the past 18 months,” Locke says. Locke describes the cancellation of the Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day street collection on August 27 as “devastating”. “We are really hoping that Cantabrians will support this event and that they will see it as the perfect opportunity to treat themselves for a good cause after the restrictions of lockdown,” Locke says. When I paint landscapes, I look to create a magic moment in time with the play of light and atmosphere on the natural world that cannot be captured on camera

ondering what his own dog did when left at home, painter Ivan Clarke soon found a novel way to express what he thought they might be doing, creating what has become a world-renowned series. Along with his other paintings, to date Clarke has released more than 200 works in the Lonely Dog series, capturing hearts all over the world. The Lonely Dog remains the largest art licence to come out of New Zealand, and in June it was announced that it will be involved in an immersive art and multimedia production being created in America. “Lonely Dog paintings take us on a journey,” he explains. “People often see themselves and others in the pictures. “The common working-class hound has a simplistic way of celebrating life and I think people are taken with this,” says Clarke. A second-generation artist, he sold his first painting at age eleven. His journey started in the family business as a traditional sign writer. “It was diverse, anything from painting on the sides of a delivery truck to on a four-storied building - our work was always on show. It was always a statement, and we were paid for it. It was old school.” The business taught Clarke how to view art through a commercial lens, but he was looking to create something more - work that made viewers feel something. The old sign company still exists, although Clarke sold it long ago and transitioned full-time into making a living in fine art. Raised in Auckland, Clarke holidayed in Queenstown, and something about the region spoke to him. “As a kid, I remember

thinking: scenery, hunting, fishing, skiing, kayaking, tramping - It was like the wild west in a Kiwi sort of way.” Following his heart, he made Queenstown his home; residing there for 30 years now. The region’s breathtaking scenery often features in his works. “When I paint landscapes, I look to create a magic moment in time with the play of light and atmosphere on the natural world that cannot be captured on camera.” Strolling through the Camp Street Gallery in Queenstown you can see his love for the South Island terrain reflected in the work. His brushstrokes carefully reproduce the softness of light, clouds, and water, but also impress the wild transient nature of the landscape. Passing each canvas you are overcome with a sense of the momentary; a beautiful fierce scene that would have otherwise passed you by becomes immortalised in the piece. “With painting, you get to rewind all those magic components that you’ve observed,” says Clarke. His artistic influences are wideranging, from Claude Monet to Dr. Seuss, and this is portrayed in the contrast between his whimsical landscapes and “big-eared, saggyjowled” dogs. His original landscapes are for sale, but if you are wanting a Lonely Dog it will have to be a limited edition print. “With the Lonely Dog Art collection, I own the entire collection of originals; none have ever been sold except for the occasional pencil sketch donated for charity purposes.” Two new Lonely Dog editions were released this year, the first in two years, and Clarke plans to release more, aspiring to paint two or three new artworks annually and sell limited edition prints of them. www.ivanclarkeartist.com

Treasure hunting for charity

Christchurch radio DJ Lana Searle is one of 21 Kiwi personalities battling it out for $100,000 for their chosen charity in Celebrity Treasure Island.

14 16 September, 2021 Metropol

one on one What induced you to take part in Celebrity Treasure Island? I’ve always wanted to see if I would actually do as well as I thought I would from the couch, so when the opportunity came up I knew I had to step up! What preparation did you do? The only prep I did was talk to my dad who is a man of the Far North; he reminded me that there’s more to eat on the land than you think. What’s your game plan (do you have one)? My game plan is to be the ultimate underdog and be a sleuth. What do you hope to get out of it? To learn things about myself that I can then take on into life. Why that charity? I am of Ngāti Kuri descent and have wanted to reconnect with my iwi for a long time, this whole experience has enabled me to do that and 4th Gen is a wonderful charity bringing the rangatahi of Ngāti Kuri together to ensure the land and the people are better off.

O

ther contestants include All Black legend Buck Shelford, Shorty Street icon Angela Bloomfield, actor Chris Parker, comedian Joe Daymond, and reporter Jess Tyson. Filmed in the Far North earlier this year not too far from Lana’s home of Dargaville, the More FM Breakfast Club host, who is a self-professed Treasure Island fan girl, couldn’t wait to hit the beach. The Christchurch-based presenter is Ngati Kuri, whose iwi are also the founders of

the charity she is supporting. So relocating back to the Far North for a stint on the show makes this experience even more special for her. Called 4th Gen, the charity was founded two years ago and works to find ways to educate people on the culture and the biosecurity issues that we face in our ecosystem. “They are also doing a lot of work educating people on the arts in the Māori world. They are such a new charity and very close to my heart,” Lana says.

What do you think is your biggest asset or strength? I know a lot more than I realise about everyday stuff in the Far North, including a few things that aren’t really common knowledge. Things about tea tree, things about Harakeke flax. I know hundreds of things you can do with flax. I am that person you want on your pub quiz team. Did you pack anything strange or unusual? I packed two pairs of jandals. There would be nothing worse than a jandal blow out on Treasure Island. Maybe I could use Harakeke flax? Do you think you can win? I think I can win. I think I have been an underdog most of my life. I am most comfortable in the underdog environment.

Embracing change Flexibility in our work, business practices and in our personal lives is the most important trait to embrace in 2021, say realty duo, Milena Bartlett and Andrew Swift. The excitement of an online auction

A

ugust’s Alert Level 4 lockdown meant a scramble for most Kiwis to sort life out on multiple fronts, including Milena and Andrew of Harcourts Gold, who had two auctions arranged for August 25. Not wanting to let their clients down by postponing, they made it happen by moving the

auctions online. “We embraced the new processes needed to keep our vendors and purchasers moving forward,” says Milena. This paid off with two successful auctions, held via Zoom, with both properties selling above the reserve price, with multiple bidders.

As a team with 30-plus years in the Canterbury market and with proven sales strategies Milena and Andrew always have a contingency plan. “As an agent you can only get it right once. There’s no room for hindsight on how you could have done it better,” says Andrew.

The first step in the journey of selling a property will determine everything that follows. Get it right from the start by calling Milena on 027 917 5191, email milena. bartlett@harcourtsgold. co.nz or Andrew on 0274 319 621, email andrew.swift@ harcourtsgold.co.nz www.harcourtsgold.co.nz

Trust your gut instinct Ruth Coppard was diagnosed with breast cancer last October, aged 61. Now in recovery, she shares her story to encourage other women to be proactive about their breast health.

18 16 September, 2021 Metropol

To other women I would say: Self-examine your breasts monthly, after your period; make this a part of your routine (put it in your cellphone reminders). Get to know what your normal is. If you are one of those who have dense breast tissue, you may not be able to differentiate a tumour from your normal lumps, and mammograms are not as effective as a diagnostic tool for you either, so ask to follow through with an ultrasound. Stand up for yourself; be your own advocate - or find a friend who can do this for you. Be proactive; become knowledgeable and involved in your own treatment. You do have choices every procedure is agreed upon in consultation with you. Trust your gut instinct. I did, and I’m hoping it’s saved my life.

It’s a big job, but we know you’re up for it

oming face to face with the issue of my mortality was my first hurdle. I loved and wanted to be with my grandchildren in their formative years. I then faced the loss of my breast, but this was not nearly as difficult as the impact of losing my hair. I had always had a wonderful tumble of curls and it was a very large part of my ‘identity’. I lost my sister to breast cancer when she was 35 years old, and had been having yearly mammograms since my late 30s. Then in May 2019, I noticed a lump in my left breast. A mammogram and ultrasound showed no concern in that area, but the ducts under the nipple were distended and ‘debris-filled’. On ultrasound three months later I was given the all-clear. My 2020 screening mammogram in early September came back clear, but I was still concerned about my left breast so I asked for it to be reviewed. In October further tests showed I had invasive ductal cancer. In December I had breast conserving surgery (a lumpectomy) and one lymph node taken, but in January I was back for a mastectomy and to have all the lymph nodes taken from my underarm area.

Concerned at delays in receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment in the public system, I saw a private oncologist for a ProSigna gene test. My result, within two weeks, showed my cancer was more aggressive than first thought, and I started chemotherapy privately before continuing in the public system. Chemotherapy was followed by three weeks of radiation treatment in June/July. I’m feeling on top of the world now! I’m definitely not the same person as I was pre-diagnosis; I’ve grown immensely in wisdom. I have always found the joy in every day, but now I feel that my outer layers have been stripped away. I have learnt to simply project my happy bubbly self - to trust my authenticity, with a new strength and honesty - from the Inside - the ‘real me’. The support I receive from Breast Cancer Foundation NZ has been amazing; the nurses were my lifeline in my first few months of breast cancer. Of all the medical people I have spoken with, they have been the most knowledgeable over a very wide range of expertise, offering support, encouragement, and suggestions for a way forward for me to consider. I can’t underline enough how valuable they are.

ow there’s a new book out that may help. Local author, part-time lecturer and teaching assistant at the University of Canterbury, Dr Tessa Grigg has teamed up with Australian Dr Jane Williams to produce Grandparenting Grandchildren. Dr Grigg has extensive experience in teaching and child development, while Dr Williams has been working with families and young children for over 45 years. She is the Director of ToddlerROO, KindyROO and GymbaROO, and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the College of Health Sciences at James Cook University, Queensland. Grandparenting Grandchildren is written specifically for

grandparents, and aims to help raise well-rounded, ready-tolearn, happy grandchildren. The authors combine their practical experience as childhood development professionals with international research, to help grandparents understand the key influences on healthy development in the first five years. These include movement, music and sleep, how best to integrate ‘super brain foods’ in a grandchild’s life, and how to build a loving, supportive relationship that helps grandchildren feel positive about their future, while constructing essential life skills that ensure they are well-rounded, happy and capable, confident learners.

The South Island tour takes in Queenstown, Invercargill, Oamaru, Christchurch and Ashburton. Jazz adaptations of classical music by Gino Vannelli, arranged by acclaimed composer Bill Cunliffe, will be performed at each event, as well as the Cunliffe original ‘Warriors’ and a rhythm/vocal version of Charles Trenet’s I Wish You Love sung by Ferry. Ferry will also present The Rolling Stones classic Honky Tonk Women, a version of George Gershwin’s Summertime and the Peggy Lee classic I Love Being here With You. The Big Band’s contribution is material from the American modern big band library. Book at www.eventfinda.co.nz

Jazz, blues & classical piano

Leading New Zealand musicians, classical pianist Michael Houstoun, jazz trombonist and bandleader Rodger Fox and special guest, acclaimed blues vocalist Erna Ferry, are coming to Christchurch in October.

Rookie realtor’s love of tourism When Dilan De Silva switched careers, little did he know how successful he would become.

D

ilan, a former hotel general manager, decided, just prior to New Zealand’s 2020

Covid-19 lockdown, to try his hand at real estate, specialising in tourism businesses and properties. Since exiting 2020 lockdown, the proud South Island resident has sold 33 tourism businesses, worth more than $20 million, earning him Tourism Properties’ ‘Rookie of the Year” title. “Even though our borders were shut, the tourism real estate sector has been very active,” he says. “If you are thinking of a lifestyle change or a move to the South Island, now is an ideal time to consider investing in tourism or running a tourism business,” he adds. Dilan says opportunities [motels, hotels, campervan parks, backpackers, restaurants and activities] are plentiful, and most will provide free housing, pay your bills, generate good net profit, and offer an affordable work-life balance. “At any given time, I deal with 20 to 30 tourism businesses; I should be able to find you the perfect match at the budget you require. “It’s the perfect time to join the industry. Our borders won’t be shut forever.” www.tourismproperties.com

Prepping for a successful sale While the universe throws curveballs into the mix of life, a reassuring constant presence is the buoyancy of the housing market. Houses continue to sell quickly, prices are still rising, and there are plenty of buyers about.

ntering the market as a seller is a step to be taken thoughtfully, with an agent that understands your requirements and knows the market for your property. The right person will have a proven track record, be a people person, and a provide service that is bespoke to you. Feeling like you’re on a conveyor belt with a bunch of other clients is never satisfactory. The right agent will also love meeting people and love what they do. They will in fact be just like super-agent Karen Glassey, of Mike Pero Real Estate Avonhead. Karen says sellers just need to get the basic presentation right, she takes over the rest, and the result is very happy clients. Simply clip lawns and edges, remove rubbish from everywhere (don’t forget behind the garage), declutter inside to the point where it seems empty to you, and have your EQC paperwork handy. If selling is on your mind this spring, Karen would love to give you a free appraisal. Phone her today on 027 567 8605 or email karen.glassey@mikepero.com www.karen-glassey.mikepero.com

Take a deep b Star of TVNZ 1 show The Apprentice Aotearoa, Mike Wilson knows the importance of mental health, having battled with it for the past two decades. Now a fully certified Rebirthing Breathwork facilitator and life transformation specialist, he explains to Metropol readers how breathwork can help others.

L

ockdown, isolation, social distancing, quarantine are all terms that have made their way into everyday use. “Covid-19 has had a significant impact on how we interact with others, go about our lives, our work, our study and many other aspects of our lives. And as we’re facing uncertainty for the coming weeks and possibly months, it’s now more important than ever to look after our mental health,” says Mike. “Simply put, breathwork refers to any type of breathing exercise or technique and people often perform breathwork exercises to improve their mental, physical or spiritual well-being. “If you’ve ever been to a yoga class you would have heard the instructor reminding you to ‘control your breath’. And at its core, this is what breathwork is all about, breathing consciously, with awareness and with intent.” Mike says that tools such as breathwork are exactly what is needed to ensure mental, spiritual and physical health are all in alignment, which is crucial during these turbulent times. Where do you start? There’s a mountain of different types of breathwork, so Mike suggests starting with a simple daily breath routine, one that he can teach in under two minutes. “This short routine will ensure your immune system is growing stronger, lower your stress levels and bring you out of your mind and into your body, where you will feel more grounded, less reactive and firmly into the present moment rather than the worrying mind.”

he cheesemaking season has officially begun this month at Barrys Bay. The much-loved Canterbury business is busy making cheese five days a week, at their factory near Akaroa. They’ve also been busy developing some fresh new packaging which will be hitting the shelves very soon. Spot it in your local store this summer! Barrys Bay have recently added an exciting Sheep Milk Pecorino to their collection. With a nutty, earthy and slightly fruity flavour, this cheese is a must-try. Find it in their factory shop or online store, along with their full range of cheese. The website also offers a variety of gift boxes, perfect for any cheeselover or that hard to buy for person! Digital inefficiencies cost millions A new survey shows that Kiwi mid-market businesses lose millions of dollars annually because of ineffective digital solutions.

T

he MYOB-commissioned survey says Kiwi employees waste an average of 12.5 hours weekly (75 working days annually) on manual or repetitive tasks due to digital inefficiencies. For businesses with 100 employees, that’s roughly $2.2m per business, per year. MYOB Head of Customer Service – Enterprise, Jo Tozer, says the study supports recent findings highlighting New Zealand’s falling productivity growth rate, and are a direct result of a heavy reliance on out-dated legacy technology.

Of businesses surveyed:

“Many leaders are unaware of the very real link between their operations software and achieving business goals, so senior decisionmakers must take charge and illustrate how the wrong digital solution can waste time, negatively affect sales growth, result in extra costs and create poor customer experiences,” she says. “Too many New Zealanders are currently working harder, not smarter and it’s costing businesses significantly.”

Meet your financial adviser A regular face-to-face meeting with a financial adviser is essential in today’s world.

T

hat’s the advice from Alistair Bean & Associates – Financial Advisers who believe this is the most important service that their firm offers. “In a recent survey, New Zealand clients were asked how often they met with their financial adviser. Concerningly, less than 20 percent of financial advisers met with 80 percent of their clients at least once per year, not even for annual reviews. This shows that four out of five financial advisers need to lift their game,” says Alistair. “Your financial adviser should constantly monitor your short, medium and longer-term plans. It is particularly imperative that this occurs in present Covid-19 times when unforeseen changes have been thrust upon us again. We can help you calm the waters to make the best adjustments to meet your individualised needs or assist you with staying the course if your goals have not changed.” Meeting face-to-face is not intimidating at all, he adds. “You are in charge, and we guide you with our recommendations, although we can also make decisions for you, so you don’t

have to.” Provisioning for ongoing financial needs is an important consideration in life. “Treat a financial advice meeting as if you’re consulting other essential services, such as seeing your doctor, dentist, lawyer or accountant, hairdresser, builder or butcher. Some of these may seem intimidating, but they’re all there to help you with your personal needs.” His advice is to challenge anyone not instigating regular client meetings. “We offer a true one-toone service, meeting clients at least annually face to face, and many of them more often. We also provide quarterly portfolio updates, quarterly newsletters, tax reports, and are only a phone call away. We specialise in nest-egg lump sum clients and will create an investment plan to meet your short, medium and longer-term needs. We can assist with KiwiSaver and help you find specialists for your other financial needs, without any obligation.” Disclosure document available free on demand. www.abafs.co.nz

Best known among the brides and bridesmaids of Christchurch, Stacey Banfield is paving the way for young women in business and showing what a whole lot of talent and passion looks like. Metropol chats to her about her journey so far.

A

Absolutely go for it, you are the only person standing in your way, and if you are genuinely passionate about what it is you’re doing you are truly capable of achieving anything you put your mind to.

n incredibly talented make-up artist by trade, Stacey’s creativity is not limited to the beautiful looks she creates for her clients on their special days. Looking back to where it all started, Stacey says that it took a lot of hard work and time to get things off the ground. “Having left school at 16 to work on counter, I always knew being a makeup artist was what I wanted to do. I freelanced on my days off, did makeup for fashion shows when my sister was at fashion school doing her diploma, and slowly built up my clientele on the side. It definitely wasn’t an overnight success story. I worked really hard for years until I had a steady stream of clients weekly to be able to support myself full time. It was at that point that led me to become my own boss and never look back.” As her business and clientele grew over the years, so did her ideas and ventures. Just last year during lockdown, the Wandering Collective came to life. “The Wandering Collective is something I dreamt up a wee

while ago but came to life during Covid, especially when the borders were closed. We have such a beautiful backyard here in New Zealand and so many big-name brands would always fly here to shoot their next campaigns regularly. Think of it like kitset photoshoots where you give me the brief and I put together a team for you, made up of some of the best creatives in the industry.” Now with over a decade worth of experience under her belt, there have definitely been lessons learned and wisdom gained. Her advice for other women who are thinking of starting their own business? “Absolutely go for it, you are the only person standing in your way, and if you are genuinely passionate about what it is you’re doing you are truly capable of achieving anything you put your mind to. Be open-minded and remember that things won’t instantly happen overnight, you have to put in many hours of hard yakka but to be able to wake up every morning excited for the workday ahead is a pretty awesome feeling.”

orth Canterbury is well known to many for the wide range of recreational opportunities it offers, its winery cellar doors and restaurants and its welcoming heartland towns. Visitors are welcome whether just passing though or staying a while. The Waimakariri and Hurunui regions’ sandy beaches, estuaries and rivers offer great fishing, boating and rafting along with family picnics and relaxing on sunny days. Elsewhere there are numerous walking tracks, bike trails and tramping experiences. A growing number of cycle trails dot the landscape and its wine and

food trail grows more popular every season. The latter encapsulates several areas including Waipara, Rangiora, Oxford, Pegasus, and Amberley. A variety of annual and regular events also make North Canterbury an attractive destination. Farmers markets are held in Oxford, Ohoka, Kaiapoi, in the Waimakariri, as well as a Sunday market in Rangiora. Fetes, garden tours and art trails also bring opportunities to visit, if you need a reason. Here are some suggestions from Metropol to help you on your way, once travel is permitted again.

luscious locks

Exfoliation is not a new word in the beauty industry. The tried-and-true practice is a staple in many skincare routines and for good reason. Smooth, clean and healthy is the result of regularly removing dead skin from the face and body, and this is no secret.

R

emoving dead skin cells from the scalp is key for healthy locks. Especially in the cooler winter months, a dry scalp can become a more regular occurrence and can get you reaching for that beanie all too often. Product build up is also a contributing factor of an unhappy scalp, and if you are someone who reaches for the dry shampoo or defining

Goop Himalayan salt scrub mousse on the daily, then you can guarantee your scalp is holding onto some of that product – yes, even after shampooing. Introducing a scalp scrub into your hair care routine will banish any product build up woes, as well as remove dead skin cells and help promote a healthier environment for your locks to grow lusciously long.

health

such as ingrown, split or involuted (curved) nails often result from incorrect cutting, minor infections, excessive shoe pressure, or a major nail trauma. These conditions often require a surgical procedure. Feet First Podiatry offers an innovative non-surgical solution, known as Toenail Bracing. Although a lengthy process (between 8-24 months to complete), the exciting news is that any anesthesia, recovery time and much dreaded procedural pain, is completely eliminated. The titanium toenail brace is designed to allow for your natural toenail to regrow in the correct position. This is achieved by applying a titanium wire to the nail, and a LED light to cure it. New wire is applied every 8-12 weeks depending on the rate of nail growth. After completion, a healthy nail continues to grow naturally. If you would like more information about this or any other podiatry services visit the website.

From sporting to frivolous

Lingerie and lockdowns – what’s the link? Confined to homes and professional lives experienced through video meetings changed the way women like to feel. Non-wired bras and sports bras have increased in popularity exponentially since the pandemic.

A

s daywear became more comfortable and tailoring languished in the closet, bras followed suit becoming an extension of loungewear. However, comfort doesn’t need to equal frumpy, because nonwired bras run the gamut from sports to lacy and frivolous. At The Fitting Room, fuller cup size brands have continually improved their non-wired options, so much so that even sports bras come non-wired and still give excellent highperformance support. The Shock Absorber D+ Max is very popular, as is the Panache NonWired Sports bra.

New Zealand brand, Hot Milk, has a cute bralette called Heroine that works brilliantly for cup sizes DD-F. The Wacoal Raffine Bralette is a pretty lace option for B-D cups, and Panache Andorra Non-Wired Bra is lacy yet supportive up to H cup size. Of course, underwired bras still play a key role in our wardrobe as the underpinning that can make an outfit sing. Store owner Deborah Leuthwaite (pictured) says “As bra fitters we believe that underwired bras are very comfortable as well - it’s just about getting the right fit.”

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone. It’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully, doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris,

strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!” www.vforhair.co.nz

Leaders in the internal cosmetic revolution, Qt believe men deserve the same opportunities for care and wellbeing as women. As such, they have formulated a professional-grade marine and bovine collagen, adding a perfect mix of complimentary ingredients for ultimate body maintenance results. More than just a beauty formula, Beaū’s premium quality Bovine and New Zealand Marine collagen not only helps defend the skin against signs of ageing, but also helps boost energy and stamina with scientifically researched ingredients that can support the increase of muscle tone. Beaū contains ‘activated charcoal’, known to help eliminate toxins and chemicals in the gut, allowing greater collagen and nutrient

health

A timely update Bowel Cancer New Zealand has recently released some sobering statistics. Gastrointestinal surgeon, Ross Roberts of the Endoscopy Clinic in Christchurch, says these statistics are a definite wake up call for anyone who may be complacent about the possibility of developing bowel cancer.

1.

2.

What are the facts?

What are the symptoms to look out for?

Every year more than 3000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with bowel cancer and over 1200 of us will die from it. Even more startling is the fact that one in every 18 Kiwis is estimated to develop bowel cancer in their lifetime. Men are at increased risk of the cancer. The most recent NZ data shows men at 44.8 per 100,000 with women 35.2 per 100,000. Bowel cancer can also affect people of all ages. Over 350 people aged under 50 are diagnosed each year. There has been media coverage lately of exactly this scenario.

4.

Ways to get checked for bowel cancer Make an appointment to see your GP. You can also begin the process of checking for bowel cancer through the National Bowel Screening Programme. Men and women aged 60 to 74 are eligible for the free programme which has been available in Canterbury since the end of October 2020. If you are eligible for the programme you will be sent a test kit, instructions on how to use it and a consent form. You can find out more about this programme through the Bowel Cancer NZ website.

3.

Being aware of the symptoms is the first step you can take to prevent bowel cancer. Symptoms may include: bleeding from the bottom (rectal bleeding), change of bowel motions/habits that come and go over several weeks, anaemia (iron deficiency), severe persistent or periodic abdominal pain, a lump or mass in the abdomen, tiredness, and loss of weight for no obvious reason.

5.

Bowel screening is not right for everyone You should not do a bowel screening test if you have had a colonoscopy within the last five years, are on a bowel polyp or bowel cancer surveillance programme, have had or are currently being treated for bowel cancer, have had your large bowel removed, or have ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease that is currently active. *Information – Bowel Cancer New Zealand Inc. Myth-busting back pain Back pain is extremely common, affecting up to 80 percent of people at some point in their life.

U

nfortunately, myths about back pain are widespread, leading to confusion, fear, and sometimes prolonged symptoms. Metropol speaks to Cath Julius, Physiotherapist, and Clinical Pilates therapist about some of the common back pain myths.

Myth 1: Pain is proportional to injury.

It is common to think that the intensity of pain is indicative of the extent of any underlying damage. “We categorically know this is not the case, especially when it comes to back pain,” says Cath. “There are several factors including stress, fear and past injury that influence how we experience pain.” Be sure to rely on an experienced health professional to get an accurate assessment of the injury and its severity.

Myth 2: Back pain equals poor core strength.

Myth 3: Rest is best for back pain.

It seems natural to think that when something hurts, you should rest it. But research shows that gentle movement and gradual return to strength are more beneficial with most injuries. “I see more long-term issues resulting from people avoiding movement than those who try to stay active. Find a professional who you trust to guide you through the appropriate movement for your injury, and you will recover quicker and with more confidence,” advises Cath.

“This is a common misconception,” says Cath. “It is reflective of our understanding 10-15 years ago, but we understand pain better now. Back pain is more commonly a result of stiffness in other areas, leading to excess load through the lower spine.” A Physiotherapist can assess your movement and determine if you need more mobility or strength to help your specific condition.

Freedom Health Physiotherapists are experts at assessing your injury and helping you find freedom in your movement again.

Dog Stream Waterfall

Conical hill This popular walk is a great option for families as it is a relatively gently zig zag trail. The track is about 2.7km and should only take about an hour to complete the return trip. The viewing platform at the top offers incredible panoramic views of the Hanmer basin and the forest is full of beautiful natives, making for an enjoyable walk both ways.

A nice short walk of just under 4km, the waterfall track is a moderate level hike through beautiful native forest and streams. It should take an hour to an hour and a half and includes a few simple stream crossings. With some steep uphill sections, it will give you a good workout but the 40-metre-high waterfall at the top is well worth the burn.

Lewis Tops Track

Mt Isobel

A more challenging track, the Lewis Tops Track winds through stunning beech forest and climbs to open tussock ridges. The hike is steep in parts and can be difficult, taking around 4 hours return to complete, so one for the more confident hikers. The views of surrounding mountains are picturesque and make the hard work very much worth it.

There are four different trails to choose from to walk Mt Isobel, the most popular being the Mt Isobel Track. This is about a 9km trail which estimates 4-5 hours walking. The return trip makes for a good half day excursion and is a moderate level so okay for most levels of hiking experience. The panoramic views of the Hanmer basin and Hanmer range are incredible, and well worth the efforts.

Fresh & fancy salads A well assembled salad can make a delicious one bowl meal, especially as a fuss free, throw-together dinner. Salads are the ultimate way to use up leftovers from the night before, and with a bit of love, can become an interesting meal full of flavour and textures.

A

perfect salad has variety, and includes protein, grains, leaves, veggies or fruit, nuts, herbs, and a dressing. This insures it is filling and substantial, tasty, has different textures, and isn’t dry. Start with your protein and build your salad around that. Leftover roast chicken or lamb are delicious. Lentils, chickpeas, tofu, eggs or cheese are good vegetarian options, and of course tuna and salmon work great too. Adding a grain is a great way to add more sustenance to a salad. Quinoa, bulgur, farro or couscous are some of the many grains that help to bulk up a salad. Once you have your protein

and grain sorted, it’s time to get creative. Having a leafy green adds nutrients and bulk, this could be spinach, kale or mesclun. Other veggie ideas are leftover roast kumara or pumpkin, avocado or pickled onions. The final step brings it all together. Toast some nuts and seeds to add a nice crunchy texture, chop up herbs for fragrance and freshness, and decide on a dressing, which is crucial to any salad for much needed moisture. A lemon or vinegar-based dressing, yoghurt dressing, honey mustard dressing, the options are endless and delicious.

Baking 50-60 mins

4 ripe pears 2 eggs 250g brown sugar 350g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 150g butter 100g Chai syrup 100g milk Toppings 2 Tbsp brown sugar 75ml maple syrup

Make sure you are gentle when you do this, as you don’t want to push up too far and remove the top of the pear where the stalk is. Just do enough to remove the core.

3.

4.

5.

Now, beat the eggs and sugar in a mixer until thick and fluffy, then add the flour and baking powder to the mixer bowl and beat to combine. Place the butter, chai syrup and milk in a suitable bowl and heat in your microwave in 30 second bursts until the butter has just melted. Add half at a time to your mixer bowl, beating well after each addition, then add the diced pear and fold through the batter. Pour a quarter of the batter into the bottom of your tin. Get the three prepped pears that now have no furry bits or innards (lucky them) and stand them up in a row down the centre of the tin, then pour the remaining batter around the pears. Sprinkle the batter with your 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Put the loaf in your preheated oven and bake for 50–60 mins until golden brown on top. Give it a poke or two with a skewer and make sure the skewer comes out clean-pay particular attention to the batter around the pears, as this will take longer to bake. Remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool slightly in the tin, then tip it out onto a cooling rack, being careful not to damage the pear stalks. Drizzle the maple syrup over the loaf while it’s still warm . . . slice and serve!

Method 1. 2.

Preheat your oven to 170°C. Grease your loaf tin (standard size) with a little butter and line it with baking paper. Peel one of the pears and chop it up into little 1cm pieces (this doesn’t

need to be exact—seriously, DO NOT measure the diced pear!). Peel the other three pears, leaving the top stalk on (this is for visual effect). Keeping the pears whole, cut out the furry bit on the bottom and use an apple corer to remove the core.

ack your handbag and man bag, round up family or friends and head along to The Athens Yacht Club in central Christchurch. Relaxing in the fresh yacht club-inspired ambience, you can experience the distinct flavours, family atmosphere and traditional comfort food that encapsulate the Greek way of life. Inspirational Greek cuisine and hospitality ensure diners return again and again to this familyoriented restaurant, where the owners and their staff take great pride in offering a slice of authentic Mediterranean dining. The aim is to have diners feel like they are in Greece, enjoying a joyous family dinner, celebrating life with good food, good drinks and learning about the true tastes of Greece. “Real Greek food from the heart; it’s all about passionate chefs, quality ingredients and traditional recipes dating back hundreds of years,” says Emilios Kotzikas. “It is about culture, comfort, family and life itself. We bring you the total Greek experience with affordable quality, authenticity and hospitality being our top priority.” What they offer is as close as possible to a Sunday family meal in Greece, without diners having to travel thousands of kilometres to get there. Open seven nights from 5pm until late, the restaurant has constantly changing seasonal menus. Head chef Lawrence Harvey (aka Loz) uses mainly local ingredients – fresh produce, top quality meat and sustainable seafood – to create culinary delights rivalling those found in the Mediterranean. To ensure authenticity, Emilios’ family regularly help to “fine-tune” the flavours. Stepping through the club doors is becoming part of one big happy Greek family. Aside from the owners and the caring AYC staff, diners join this extended family, enjoying the atmosphere, the service and most of all the cuisine. Seduced by “Greek food fit for the gods”, and by generous portions, diners never leave unsatisfied or

That’s no surprise with tempting selections such as succulent crispy black tiger prawns or pasta stuffed and topped with European cheeses; combinations featuring tzatziki, taramosalata and tyrokafteri, Saganaki (flamed cheese), grilled broccolini and asparagus, baked eggplant, seared yellowfin tuna, Greek meatballs, flash-fried calamari, slow cooked 1kg+ lamb shoulder, chargrilled steak, fresh seafood options and those are just a few. In the balance When cooking with punchy flavours, there is a fine line that balances a meal perfectly. Too much salt, sugar, acid or spice and a meal can change hugely. We all know what it is like to lovingly prepare a dish only to have it turn out a little too spicy or a little too salty and a little disappointing.

A

few simple adjustments can coax a dish into a flavourful and wellbalanced eating experience. If you have accidentally added too much salt, bulking up a meal by adding more vegetables and diluting with a little water can help reduce the intensity of the salt. Adding sugar or something spicy can also help balance and mask the excess salt. Adjusting the salt in a dish

can also enhance sweetness and suppress bitterness. Getting the acid balanced correctly can also change the flavours. Adding a squeeze of lemon or lime juice, or a dash of vinegar can bring out different flavours in a dish and enhance them without having to up the salt. Another more hidden gem in cooking that transforms dishes is umami. Think soy

sauce, hoisin sauce, fish sauce and miso. In many of these Asian sauces and pastes, umami gives an incredible depth of flavour to cooking. Familiarising your pantry with umamirich products as well as delicious fresh flavour enhances like chilli, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaf will allow you to create punchy, well-balanced dishes.

For the sweet chilli sauce, deseed then finely dice the chilli, and whack the lemongrass a few times with the back of a knife to release the goodness but leave it whole. Place the chilli and lemongrass in a small saucepan with the sugar, vinegar and lime leaves or zest, and stir to combine. Simmer on a low heat for around 30 minutes. The sauce will be a lot runnier than store-bought varieties but is really delicious and perfect for dipping. Pop all of the ingredients for the fishcakes into a blender and pulse to combine well. Heat a frying pan with a good amount of oil. Take heaped tablespoon-sized amounts of fishcake mixture and add to the pan. Cook 5 or 6 (you’ll get 12–14 altogether) at a time, and fry for around 1½ minutes each side until the fish cake has turned white and a little golden on the outside but is still juicy and moist inside. Serve the fishcakes with the sweet chilli sauce; pile them all on a platter and garnish with extra fresh coriander if taking to share with friends. Serve with an Asianstyle slaw if having them as a dinner.

500g hoki (or any firm, white-fleshed fish) 1 zucchini, grated 3 spring onions, roughly chopped 1 egg 2 Tbsp cornflour ⅓ cup any soy-based or ginger stir-fry sauce ½ teaspoon sesame oil zest and juice of 1 lime 30g coriander 20g mint oil for cooking Sweet Chilli Sauce 1 long red chilli 5cm piece of lemongrass ½ cup white sugar ½ cup white vinegar 2 kaffir lime leaves (or zest of 1 lime)

Whitebait time again An indelible part of being a Kiwi, for some the first whitebait patty of the year takes on the significance that the first Easter egg does for others.

T

hey’re not known as ‘white gold’ for nothing – swimming upstream from the sea in the Spring, these tiny slivers of deliciousness are our taonga, to be treated with reverence, and every mouthful is an occasion. If you only get to worship at the whitebait altar once this season, make sure its at the Purple Weka Cafe on Fitzgerald Avenue where the precious treat is served in the traditional way. Owner Stewart McDougall says “we respect the natural flavour and natural goodness by preparing our patties simply with two eggs, seasoning and a wedge of lemon if you like.” Customers can order whitebait patties with thick slices of fresh white bread or as a meal served with fries and salad, and, subject to availability, whitebait patties are served every day in season, all day long. Of course, all of the other options on the all-day menu and the great coffee or cool drinks are served with a cheeky weka grin all year round.

Flowers by

YOU Floral arrangements create a beautiful burst of colour in any room and add a little something special to a home. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at creating your own pretty arrangements, Metropol has a few top tips to get you started.

Selection

When selecting your flowers, try choose a range of varieties that each bring something different to the arrangement. Some will fill space and add texture and bulk, without stealing the show. Some will bring movement and add dimension, and some will be the stunning focal flowers that give the bunch its wow factor.

Colour

Decide on a colour scheme before you start arranging. You might choose to stick with one tonal colour scheme, fun and bright complementary colours, or beautiful rustic neutrals. Whatever you choose, make sure you have some greenery in there as this will fill the gaps. Use whatever flowers are currently in season as inspiration.

Tools

Aside from the flowers, you don’t need much to create a floral arrangement. Good sturdy shears or scissors are needed to give the stems a fresh, clean cut. A vase is also a necessity, and the shape and size of this will change how your arrangement looks. The wider the opening is, the more flowers you will need to fill it.

Arrange

Start with a focal flower, and begin to add greenery, filler flowers and focal flowers, rotating around your bunch to create variety. The twisting and turning will also keep the stems looking tidy. For the outer layer, use greenery, to tie everything in nicely. Before placing the bunch in a vase, give the stems a trim so they are all even.

Taking shape

Geometric shapes are taking pride of place through new ways of bringing placed blocks of colour into our homes. This living room channels art nouveau glamour with an arrangement of hexagonal shapes.

Styling by Vanessa Nouwens | Photography by Bryce Carleton

FURNISHINGS: Rug from Citta, resuable cup and faux plant from Freedom

G

lamourous tones and graphic shapes add a contemporary edge to a neutral wall. This one looks fabulous against the soulful neutral of Resene Tea, with accent colours displayed across the room. From here, the colours build. A traditional green tone emerges in Resene Bush with its deep, jewel-like presence. The coastal blue of Resene Ming continues to resonate further with the warm rusty tan of Resene Brown Sugar. It brings the liveliness of Resene Ming and the richness of Resene Bush down to earth. The deep, dark blue of Resene Blue Night calmly centres the colour scheme. Finally, Resene Summer Green balances the composition with its cooling, light blue. Although these colours differ dramatically, they work together

harmoniously, balancing drama and softness. Bringing in your chosen colours in furniture and objects will have a significant impact on the feel of the living room. It’s vital to harmonising the room, which in turn will create a more comfortable experience. By upping the ante on geometrics by using rich and light colours, this hexagon feature illustrates how to create impact with tones in an elegant way. It’s a stylish, unexpected alternative to a simple living room wall, celebrating the freewheeling spirit of rich colours amid graphic designs. The bold contrast between the feature and the neutral wall identifies your space as a destination in which to relax, recharge and reset.

MOODBOARD: Background in Resene Tea with A4 drawdown swatches (from bottom to top) in Resene Bush, Resene Summer Green, Resene Edgewater, Resene Blue Night, Resene Ming, Resene Brown Sugar and Resene Tea, vase in Resene Brown Sugar and small hexagon dishes in Resene Summer Green and Resene Bush.

“This house is still like the day it was built,” say the very happy owners of a Merivale home, seven years on. This would be the timeframe when many homes would start to show wear and tear. However, they knew well that in the end, you get what you pay for, and more. The pitched roof, two-story home resides on the former site of historic Elizabeth House, on Circuit Street. The opportunity to utilise the same stately footprint became the challenge of DJ Hewitt Builders. A luxury solid-concrete build now stands as a contemporary icon. The discerning first owners welcomed the opportunity to buy an ideal replacement to their former penthouse living. The O’Neill Architecture designed home was Rockcote plastered on Integra panel. Its 600sqm includes six bedrooms, a home theatre, lounge, and family room. However, it was the sort-after four-car garage for the motor enthusiast that ticked the most poignant box. Although an expansive airy abode, it provides sumptuous cosy warmth in winter, with underfloor heating and hi-tech air-conditioning. A partially

covered timber-decked courtyard creates another kitchen dining alcove for hosting the retired couple’s friends and family. Elegant lighting and skylights accentuate striking black, white and neutral pallets. As does the quality tiling over the underfloor heating, and the ambient gas-fire surround. Three years ago, the opportunity to purchase the adjacent section, doubled the land size. The owners didn’t hesitate to bring Daryl and his team back on the job, this time to build another separate three-car solid concrete garage. Top quality and simple was the brief. It now looks completely in keeping as part of the home. With a separate entrance on Heaton Street, the land still has its own title for future options. A former builder himself, of many a Christchurch property, the owner recognised Daryl Hewitt’s long-standing experience as being right at the top of his game. He described working with Daryl on the project as absolutely superb - being like-minded perfectionists enhancing the perfect home.

Closet envy Contemporary home design often includes a walk-in wardrobe as part of the master suite, and also as part of a guest suite.

Create a focal point If you have the space to hang statement lighting, try a large ring pendant to create practical illumination and a wow factor all in one.

Bespoke vanity Include a gorgeous vanity table, with compartmentalised make-up drawers, complementary chair and well-lit mirror.

S

pacious, well organised and with a built-in storage system are the basics, however the finished room will depend on who it’s for and what their style is. A luxury wardrobe is all about creating a beautiful space that you enjoy walking into every time. Here are some suggestions from Metropol.

Central island

Hang one or two of your favourite art works on the walls to enjoy, with proper lighting to show them off of course.

Add an island of drawers, including special jewellery compartments, and accentuate it with a large chandelier for extra glitz and glam.

Organise your makeup

Arrange the perfume and make-up you use every day neatly, using decorative trays and storage vessels.

Dump old makeup

Throw out old make-up, perfume and toiletries. Products past their use-by dates may harbour harmful bacteria.

Replace old pillows

If your pillows don’t easily spring back into shape, dump them and invest in some new ones. Try bamboo pillows.

Ban random rubbish

Regularly clean out any rubbish, old knick knacks, papers and used coffee cups that accumulate.

Improve your sleep A bedroom should be a sanctuary, a peaceful haven where a blissful night’s sleep is top of the list. Often it’s a neglected room, a dumping ground for clothes (clean or dirty), and clutter and a quick hiding place when guests are suddenly due. Never fear; follow these simple tips from Metropol and you’ll not only banish the clutter but be well on the way to a more restful sleep.

Clean out your clothes Keep those you wear the most and get rid of everything torn, saggy, shrunken, old, mouldy, smelly or stained.

Banish the laundry basket

Don’t keep dirty laundry in your bedroom. Use a basket in a bathroom or laundry. Put clean laundry away straight away.

Ban fur babies

Don’t let your pets into your bedroom. They disrupt sleep, shed pet hair onto bedding, bring in fleas and dirty bed linen.

Mobile phones

Ban these from the bedroom. They’re usually home to more bacteria than a toilet seat, and expose you to non-ionizing radiation.

‘Locked down but looking up’ is how I’d describe this, our second national Level 4 lockdown. What have you made of it? Did you survive, thrive, walk daily, bake madly, online shop gladly, consider other job prospects, think about those that are finding themselves in tremendously vulnerable positions and, more importantly, what did you learn about yourself and the worlds – personal and professional – that you occupy?

Locked Down but

I’ve learnt so much about myself and about the resilience and compassion that exists around us all. In 2020, when we went into our first lockdown, my major emotion was fear. Fear of the unknown, fears for our business, our family, our friends.

Lookking Up

en

You name it I was scared silly about it. Strategy, support and structure got me through – as they probably did for many others – but this time it’s different. You’re not as scared when you know a bit, or should I say a lot, more about d d cFa by what you’re dealing with. Here’s some of L y n ette M what I’ve learnt.

1. Business hasn’t completely stopped.

Auctions were able to be undertaken utilizing the Zoom platform and this allowed us to sell unconditionally 24 out of 26 properties at a full range of prices and across a myriad of locations in a 14 day period. That’s a massive change from last year and it’s gone a long way to ensuring confidence in the market for all participants. For me, the standouts from the auctions have included the huge benefit to vendors of having property videos and floor plans, the increase in buying without seeing and the continued strong demand for property despite everything, as evidenced by multiple bidders and some bidding wars between

also been more evident. What if this is an ongoing part of our reality? What changes need to keep occurring to remain relevant and productive? And then processing these thoughts into an actionable plan. We are currently in level 3 on the cusp, I hope, of a level 2 announcement in the next 24 hours and if this happens an entirely new world opens up. Bubbles get a lot more flexible and our office which is operating at a skeleton staff level, could get back to its usual busy bumptious self.

3. At a personal level, last year’s bubble was a biggie. Five beautiful members of my family all together with John and I made for a noisy, busy time. This time, with only the two of us, it’s been so different. No more Warriors reruns, war movies or gentle walks with my dad, no more ten meals a day, care of my mum or dance lessons from our niece. I’ve missed that. Whatever your lockdown has looked or felt like, I hope there’s been a quiet lesson somewhere in it. Here’s mine:

Keeping tabs on screen time Keeping track of the amount of digital screen time your family clocks up, especially teens and younger children, can be a tricky thing for even the most vigilant of parents. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott takes a look at one option designed to make it simple.

Y

ou know how it goes, teenagers jumping from one screen to another. No sooner finishing up a gaming session on their PC and they’re in bed on their phone scrolling through a couple of hundred TikTok videos. Controlling screen time from a central point can be done at a router level, but it requires a fair bit of technical knowledge. But with the Circle Home Plus, keeping tabs on screen time, websites, apps, devices and their whereabouts, for every family member and device connected to your home network, is as simple as checking your phone. The Circle (which is actually a cube), lets you have full control over how long your kids can spend on specific sites. Want them to have unlimited access to Wikipedia and YouTube, but have only one hour per day on Instagram, and not have access to Reddit at all? You can do that within the Circle Parental Controls app. Set times and limits can be enforced easily and extra time rewards can be given if they’ve done their chores. You can even cut the internet off altogether during certain times when you want some family

bonding, such as dinner times for example. Granted, they can use mobile data instead, but just watch how fast that gets used up with videos, gaming and Netflix. The Circle is easy to set up and the accompanying app couldn’t be any simpler to use, however all this comes at a price. The Circle unit itself retails for around $200, and the use of the Parental Controls app requires a subscription. That itself is a couple of hundred yearly, but there are monthly options and a more sensible lifetime option if you’re going to need to use it for a few years. Buying the hardware normally includes 12 months subscription to the app, so you’ll get to assess the very clever features for free before making further commitment.

Pros: An incredible range and depth of in-app controls. Simple to follow and operate, even for noobs. Offers peace of mind.

Cons: Ouch! It’s pricey if you want to use it past the free period. But the lifetime membership is worth the outlay in the long run.

Optimising outdoor living Spring comes with unpredictable weather and just as we optimistically venture to our outdoor living areas, a sudden change sees us darting indoors again.

A

louvre roof is the perfect way to optimise your enjoyment of that space, even in the unpredictable spring weather. Louvre Solutions roof systems are more than just a slatted covering. They are customised with heating, lighting, and ventilation so you can create your own comfort zone, and you have the option of installing pull-down side screens. Thanks to a rain sensor, the louvres close automatically when it starts raining, just like magic. No more dashing indoors when a sudden shower arrives. For more than 17 years the company, owned by Craig Rogers, has been manufacturing louvre systems in Canterbury at its Rangiora base. Only high-quality materials are used, from the New Zealand extruded aluminium

louvres and fastenings to the motors and controls imported from Europe. The metal system is stronger and more durable than traditional patio covers and conforms to nearly all wind and snow load requirements. All the company’s louvre roofs come with a 10-year warranty. Sounds expensive? Not necessarily. “In the early days premium products like these definitely were expensive,” says Craig. But that’s changed. “Technology has advanced and has widened the options for customers. Louvre roofs are now within the realms of possibility across the spectrum, from entry-level properties to high-end architecturally-designed homes.” Incorporating a louvre roof system is something to consider in the design stage of your new build to maximise the

positioning of your outdoor living space or they can be retrofitted to complement your existing patio or spa area. The systems are also a practical and efficient way to make the most of your commercial building, enabling heating and cooling control in the office environment or extending the time that you can use your restaurant or cafe’s outdoor dining area. New Zealand’s changeable weather conditions are beyond your control but a louvre roof puts you in control of your own microclimate, allowing you to enjoy al fresco living year-round. “Whether entertaining, relaxing, or simply expanding your indoor area, we can bring your ultimate outdoor environment to fruition,” says Craig. The company has agents in the North Island as well as in Nelson, mid-Canterbury, Wanaka and Queenstown. Enjoy a great sleep The benefits of a good night’s sleep are multiple. Studies worldwide have shown that a decent sleep nightly should boost your immune system, result in better work productivity, improved mental agility, weight loss and mood control.

S

leep helps keep your mind and body healthy. Most adults need seven or more hours of good-quality sleep on a regular schedule each night. Quantity and also quality are important so that you feel rested when you wake up.

Sleep is especially essential for various aspects of brain function such as cognition, concentration, productivity, and performance, all of which studies have shown are negatively affected by sleep deprivation. On the other hand, good sleep

has been shown to improve problem-solving skills and enhance memory performance of both children and adults. To sort your perfect bed and mattress visit the Dreamwool Beds showroom at 96 Disraeli Street, Sydenham or call 0800 753 754.

Pick your mattress

Bed size matters

Key to that is having the right bed and mattress which is where Dreamwool Beds can help. Company director David Henderson says there is no better way to spend nights than sleeping soundly on a mattress filled with generous layers of soft, luxurious Merino wool sourced directly from select South Island farms. Dreamwool mattresses provide optimum comfort and temperature control, enabling you to get to a deeper sleep, faster, he says. “The combination of pure Merino wool, natural latex infused with activated charcoal, thousands of delicate microcoils and supportive pocketsprings, means Dreamwool mattresses provide sleepers with the perfect microclimate for any season: cool, moisture-wicking confidence in summer and warm, luxurious comfort in winter. “Like sleeping on a cloud,” he adds.

Sleeping in a size-appropriate bed also helps with a good night’s sleep. For older singles, David suggests an old-fashion three-quarter size bed. “It’s four feet wide, which is larger than a king single, yet smaller than a regular double bed. I know several older people on their own now who have downsized and love it.“There’s plenty of room for one person not to get lost or swamped by the size. There’s also room for bedtime stories with grandchildren when they visit.” Often called a “small double”, three quarter beds are very spacious for one person and compact enough to fit in a standard-sized modern bedroom. For those who enjoy relaxing in bed, sitting up and watching television then drifting off to the best possible sleep, try the recliner option. You’ll love it.

Spring garden

into the

With the welcomed arrival of spring, it is the time when people start thinking about their gardens and what to plant for the season ahead. Growing plants and trees at home takes the right knowledge, and a little help from the experts is never a bad idea.

K

Current trends Kiwiflora Nurseries are seeing include an ongoing demand for fruit trees. This is possibly the result of Covid-19 creating a want for self-sufficiency, it makes sense that in our current climate, having fresh, healthy food grown at home is appealing.

iwiflora Nurseries have an ever-changing range of plants available, as well as expert advice on how best to grow and look after different varieties. They respond to consumer demands as garden trends change, and watch the trends in popularity of different plants to ensure they are ready for whatever it is their customers are looking for. Current trends Kiwiflora Nurseries are seeing include an ongoing demand for fruit trees. This is possibly the result of Covid-19 creating a want for selfsufficiency, it makes sense that in our current climate, having fresh, healthy food grown at home is appealing. People who may not have before, are now taking it upon themselves to grow their own produce. Kiwiflora Nurseries currently have 19 varieties of citrus trees, including lemons, limes, mandarins, and oranges. Other fruit trees in stock include apples, apricots, blueberries, cherries, feijoas, figs, peaches, and plums, so there is plenty of choice if you are just getting started or adding to your growing collection of fruit trees. Another current trend is the increasing popularity of flowering perennials. These are a beautiful

long living plant that unlike annuals, don’t need to set seed to keep thriving. They often grow as clumps, which get bigger every year by expanding sideways, and can then be divided to spread out over the garden. The seasonal colours are stunning and will bring so much beauty to your outdoor spaces, so these are a great option for planting this spring. Kiwiflora Nurseries propagate and grow a vast range of trees, plants and shrubs, and are always looking to develop and refine their customer experience. Next on the horizon is a new website, due to be live later this September. This will mean introducing online shopping and click and collect orders for ultimate customer ease. There will also be advanced features including plant photos and cultural information. Look out for future developments and additions of handy resources for gardening at home, articles on specific tips and tricks and tutorial type videos. The

language of flowers WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH

For many centuries, flowers have been used to convey various messages such as love and hope. During the Victorian era saying it with flowers became a fine art with nearly all homes having a guidebook to help send the right message.

F

lowers were often used to deliver messages that couldn’t be spoken out loud, and even the method of delivery was part of the language. Sometimes a “yes” answer came in the form of flowers handed over with the right hand; if the left hand was used, the answer was “no.” Plants were also used to express aversive feelings, such as the “conceit” of pomegranate or the “bitterness” of aloe. A rose declaring “devotion” or an

apple blossom showing “preference” might have been answered with a yellow carnation to express “disdain”. Some flowers, such as roses, poppies, carnations and lilies were used to express a range of emotions, based on their colour alone. Pink carnations meant “I’ll never forget you”; red said “my heart aches for you”; white was for the “the sweet and lovely”; and yellow expressed romantic rejection. A red rose was used

to express feelings of love, while a red tulip was a confession of love. The colour of roses played a huge role in the language of flowers. White roses symbolised purity and a new beginning; red roses love, dark crimson roses mourning, pink roses happiness, yellow roses jealousy and infidelity, orange desire and enthusiasm, lavender love at first sight, and coral friendship and sympathy.

Electrify Aotearoa

Project completion delayed

Together with Blackbird Ventures, one of Australasia’s leading venture capital companies, Ministry of Awesome is taking action with the launch of Electrify Aotearoa.

Delays in completing our major projects due to the latest Covid-19 lockdown are a tough pill to swallow.

This is New Zealand’s first women founder startup conference which is taking place right here in Christchurch on October 14. The basic premise here is that we believe that - like the saying says - “You cannot be what you cannot see.” When the most widely circulated startup success stories feature Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, or Steve Jobs, it’s hard to imagine yourself as a potential unicorn founder when all role models look, sound, and are nothing like you. That’s why we are gathering together a power of New Zealand’s top women startup founders to inspire and connect with the next generation of women-led startups.

We were preparing for an official opening and public open day at Te Pae Christchurch early next month and Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre was rapidly growing. No work in Level 4 and the restrictions that come with Level 3 now pose significant challenges to advancing construction as quickly as we would like. At Level 3 the workforce had to be reduced to meet social distancing requirements on the sites, resulting in a dip in productivity. More disruptive, though, are the travel restrictions. The scale, size and complexity of some equipment and services required numerous specialists from outside of Christchurch

Speakers include startup mavens such as Sharesies’ Brooke Roberts, Yabble’s Kathryn Topp, Outset DeepTech’s Imche Fourie, and Theresa Gattung, NZ Lead for SheEO, and Chair of Women in Entrepreneurship at the University of Auckland Business School. The intention is that Electrify Aotearoa will help establish a foundational network for women entrepreneurs, New Zealand’s top investors and venture capital companies, and the nation’s most successful women entrepreneurs. This network will help them form a pathway for more women founders to activate and succeed with a powerful community supporting them

to install and get running. In the case of Te Pae Christchurch, at least 30 experts in areas including fire systems management, commissioning and compliance are Auckland and Wellington-based. Of course, we understand and support the steps taken to combat Covid-19, as a community outbreak would be far more detrimental to our work. It’s important to remember that these facilities are long-term investments in Christchurch’s prosperity. Thousands of people will come here to visit Te Pae Christchurch and the hoops at Parakiore will wear out with all the shots taken over the coming years.

No matter what you need, you can trust DGI Morgan Ltd for reliable construction & maintenance solutions. There is no job too big or too small – we do it all.

Exploring community issues

Coping with a chain reaction

Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct continues to explore issues in health that are of interest to the wider Canterbury community.

Who was it who said: ‘it’s like déjà vu all over again’? I think many of us felt we would never have to go through another Covid-19 lockdown. But one case of the Delta variant started a chain reaction that would have kept going without one.

Recent events supported by Te Papa Hauora include; the Future of Health Challenge, where Canterbury tertiary students worked together to create solutions to health issues, the CDHB Youth Advisory Council’s public endometriosis education evening, a joint Canterbury Tech and Canterbury Health Innovation networking event highlighting innovation within our health system, and the Health Research Society of Canterbury’s annual Poster Expo where researchers showcased current projects. This month it plans to hosts its annual research talks ‘we’re talking health’. This public forum addresses health issues through the various stages of our lives. Presentations on ‘Starting well’ include birthing

procedures, nutrition, and treating infections in children. Talks on ‘Living well’ emphasise healthy lifestyles, and ‘Ageing well’ has speakers addressing age-related issues such as Parkinson’s disease and the relationship between active living and healthy ageing. We are fortunate to have a rich resource of expertise across a wide range of health and wellbeing areas to draw on, and keep our community up to date with issues that directly impact their own lives, and those of their whānau. Te Papa Hauora is committed to encouraging wider community engagement, and appreciates the support and feedback from attendees to these excellent events.

I want to acknowledge the 300 or so Christchurch residents that were in a place of interest in Auckland, who came home, were tested twice, and stayed home until the two-week cycle was over. By doing the right thing, you have served your community well, and helped protect us all. I would also like to acknowledge Annabel Turley who is not only the Chair of the Christchurch Central City Business Association but is also a pharmacist. The pop-up drive through vaccine service in Cashel Mall was fantastic. And that is the key to our ‘living with Covid future’ - getting as close to 100

percent of us vaccinated as soon as possible. What I did like about the Alert Level 4 and 3 lockdown was walking around Hagley Park and through the city centre. There were quite a few people doing the same, socially distanced and wearing masks of course. But I will never miss Zoom meetings. I like people-topeople contact. And I won’t miss seeing our businesses doing it tough. We learned last year that the best way to recover from lockdown is to back our local businesses, and that’s what we will do again.

Congratulations to Barry Connor on winning the ADNZ Award

as something truly beautiful to use on the exterior and interior of homes. Timber cladding is also an extremely workable material, which helps architects incorporate innovative designs, shapes and ideas into their buildings that might not have been possible with materials such as brick and stone. Architects are using timber in inventive ways that really highlights the natural beauty of the material. Gone are the days where it was only to build rustic and unpolished, bach like designs. New modern builds are using timber cladding to create a contemporary aesthetic that is sophisticated while also creating a warm, homey feel. Something timber does more so than most materials is connects us to nature. The natural textures, feel and colours are parallel with those found in nature. Similar to the increased popularity of indoor plants and greenery, there is a sense of calm and peace when these natural features are incorporated into a home.

uring the recent 2021 Canterbury/Westland ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards, his design for the cabin was highly commended in the Residential New Home up to 150m2 Category. Skylark Cabin (pictured), nestled among the foothills of the Ben Ohau Range, is a tiny home big on design and creature comforts, and just the start of a larger project on the site. The Awards’ judges say it is “a beautiful design that has been well laid out and located on an exceptional site.” They add that the strong roof form relates sensitively to the mountain context, while the low profile and material palette works well in its setting within the powerful landscape. An oculus adds a great finishing

Barry says regulations allowed a minor dwelling no more than four metres in height and 50sqm in total, hence Skylark Cabin, which is the first stage of an ongoing two to five year vision for the site. Future development of ‘The Burrows’ will include a cluster of partially buried 20-foot shipping containers converted into luxury cabins, interconnected to a main living area. The eventual placement of the main dwelling was a factor considered when siting Skylark Cabin. Barry Connor Design also won a regional commended award in the Residential Alterations and Additions Category for the renovation design of St Columba’s Hall in Hawarden, Canterbury.

touch offering an incredible view of the night sky. The client’s brief, says Barry, was for a simple retreat with honest materials, a place to quite literally soak up the landscape with a focus on effortless relaxation. The exterior is cloaked in a band-sawn larch timber rain screen which represents the idea of a bird’s nest, while the interior comprises beech ply, with simple shadowline negative detail and the use of light beams to accentuate lines. Seemingly randomly placed windows frame spectacular mountain views during the day and at night a circular skylight over the bed provides views of the prized and protected Mackenzie Aoraki Dark Sky Reserve.

His design has the cabin’s underlying form as two offset open plan spaces. “One contains the bedroom and bathroom and is positioned to allow morning sun in both winter and summer to filter through. These spaces are orientated towards The Black Hills and Backbone Peak. “The other holds the kitchen, entry and living areas with closer views of the Ben Ohau range. The angle of the offset was derived from plotting specific views from certain activities; lying in bed, washing the dishes, having a shower, sitting, standing. The folded form also nods to the distinctive aerial display of the local skylarks with their angular, precise, and purposeful acrobatics.”

Or something more nature-inspired, with tumbling waterfalls, native ferns and a rock surround? And let’s not forget about adding a built-in spa or hot tub which can easily be combined with a new pool. Here are some other criteria to take into account:

Cost

Care

Basic costs to install an inground pool range from around $28,000 to $55,000 and often more for special customisation, extra features and landscaping. An in-ground spa pool, for instance, costs from $6000 to $15,000 and pool lighting from $700 to $1800.

Pool care is not necessarily a hard task, especially if you contract a professional company to do it. Otherwise there are numerous gadgets to help. Some rove around the pool cleaning it while others will dispense necessary chemicals at set times.

aster Joiners belong to one of the world’s oldest trades, dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. Most of us have heard of Master Builders and Master Plumbers, but Master Joiners are perhaps not so well-known. A joiner is a skilled tradesperson who works with timber and board products to create constructions such as kitchens, doors, windows, staircases and counters. It is an area of professionalism and craftsmanship. Joiners are represented in New Zealand by the Master Joiners

Federation which has 10 regional associations, including one in Canterbury. As a group they aim to promote the Master Joiners brand encouraging customers to use joiners who are masters of their trade, producing high standards of workmanship. Membership of the Federation has benefits not only for customers, but for the joiners themselves. It bestows credibility and the interaction and sharing of information with fellow joiners is invaluable to all involved.

The latest offerings follow good progress on the nearby Seaview housing development on the northern side of the mall. That site has been cleared in preparation for 50 new homes. ChristchurchNZ General Manager Urban Development Cath Carter says a real buzz is building in New Brighton. “He Puna Taimoana has proved a huge success for the suburb, with visitor numbers in its first year of about 120,000 smashing expectations. The hot pools café is also being used as a new events venue, with 40 tourism business leaders recently attending a business development function. “More people are heading out to the seaside, enjoying the pools, taking the kids to the new playground and making the most of local businesses and cafes. We’ve always known that the key to the successful regeneration of New Brighton would be people: the more people we can bring to the heart of the suburb the more businesses will thrive and it will become more attractive to visitors,” she says. “With the public projects a big success, and business landowners beginning to make improvements, the final phase is the development of housing within walking distance of all

the exciting new developments. Work is well underway on Seaview Road and we’re now releasing a significant block of land on Beresford Street,” she says. Alongside the Seaview Development, work is pushing ahead on the creation of a community-led arts hub in the former Roy Stokes Hall. Twenty-five proposals have been received from potential tenants as part the pilot programme to create

the Art and Community Hub, with a business case being led by Life in Vacant Spaces. Carter says there is already strong interest from developers in New Brighton land parcels as the city experiences a strong property market. “We’ll be working with the successful parties to confirm a medium-density residential development that will get underway as soon as possible.”

Dream stadium doors open

The recently opened MainPower Stadium is a dream come true for North Canterbury sports enthusiasts and an exciting, highly anticipated addition to the area. The 6000-square-metre, state-of-the-art stadium in Rangiora opened its doors in early August and is the largest of its kind to be built in the region.

Warren and Mahoney architects were behind the design of the centre, and Leighs Construction Ltd the company chosen to build it. The North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust will manage the

stadium. CEO Michael Sharpe says, “With MainPower Stadium we now have a fantastic facility which can be used by all our residents of all ages, from fitness centre members, to interest groups and sporting clubs. A big advantage is reducing the need for the community to travel outside the district for training or competitions as we can cater for multiple sports and uses at the same time.

We have everything here under one roof. In addition to servicing the needs of the people in our region, the stadium gives us the exciting opportunity to provide top-level amenities which would put us in the perfect position to host regional and national competitions.” The facility is a huge win for the whole Waimakariri community and offers huge potential for the region. Illuminated spaces

With warm summer nights in sight, it is time to start thinking about creating your perfect outdoor entertaining area. When the sun sinks, outdoor lighting is the real hero. There is so much you can do with lighting to create ambience and a sense of cosiness outside. The right lighting for your area will highlight colours from the garden, illuminate seating and pathways and create an overall warmth and softness to the space.

Uplighting Positioning lights under trees, plants, pots or built- in benches and chairs creates a beautiful soft glow to the area. The subtle, understated lighting can also be nestled into flower beds to highlight the colours when it gets dark. If you are wanting to maximise cosiness and create an intimate setting, uplighting is the key.

String lighting An affordable, quick and easy way to create ambience in an outdoor area is using string lighting. Hung overhead, string lights create definition in darkness and add a festive feeling to the space. They can be placed around fences, trees or along the sides of the house. Once it is dark, the string disappears, and the twinkling lights bring the area to life.

Solar lighting

Floor lights

Growing in popularity, solar LED lights are a great option for outdoor lighting as they have high output and a large variety of colours available. There is obviously some care needed when placing them to ensure they get ample sunlight during the day, but they are a versatile option and can be used in spotlights, lanterns, downlighting and accent lighting.

Great for use around pools or patios and deck areas, floor lights help with guiding and defining spaces. A subtle way to bring light into a space, having flat floor lights along pathways also ensures safety at night. A contemporary look, the uplighting placement can also create ambience around the garden, water features or seating areas.

First of all a deep clean will extract years of dirt, grime, mould and contaminants from deep within the grain of a wooden deck. The products used are environmentallyfriendly and contain no bleach, acids or phosphates. Next the wood is left to thoroughly dry before stain or paint is applied, nourishing the timber with each coat. The products not only make the wood look like new, but help protect and maintain it for the long term.

What of the future?

Get decked out for summer

How does your deck look after winter?

When should you have your timber restored?

Perhaps it is in need of some TLC to make it look its best again. Deck and Fence Pro’s Tim Gerard is just the person to work magic on faded, dirty or mossy timber to give you an outdoor space where you can be proud to relax or entertain.

Spring and summer are the ideal times. The work can’t be done properly in the colder damper months when wood is wet. Water and the oil of timber stains just don’t mix. Attempting to do this kind of work at the wrong time of year is a classic DIY error.

Wood stains perform best when topped up every 12 to 18 months. An on-going maintenance schedule can include a light clean with a mild detergent and a stain recoat.

t’s a total team effort.” says Clive Barrington. “We could not have reached this pinnacle without the input of the entire team. Building quality into your home doesn’t have to cost the earth. It’s all about great people consistently doing great work.” Each of the six homes entered offered its own unique construction challenges. Building the Supreme Award winning

build home designed by South Architects though, was, as Clive puts it, “very demanding work, with its audacious freeform copper roof – but that’s what we specialise in and thrive on.” That it was indeed

demanding is echoed in the judges’ citation: “Combining design with functionality and excellent workmanship has resulted in this fantastic home. While this home created some major construction challenges, the builder relished in delivering a home of supreme quality and merit. “From the foundations, the precast concrete walls, to the complex roof structure, the accuracy of this builder is clear. This building is inspiring; it features a clever design, meticulous attention to detail and an accurate construction.” Clive Barrington Construction celebrates 40 years in business this year. Over that time working alongside its clients and internationally recognised architects, the company has built many of Canterbury’s most admired homes and achieved awardwinning results. It continues to be a formidable force in a competitive industry basing its ethos on honest old school values and quality craftsmanship. This has enabled the team to repeatedly bring the clients’ visions and the architects’ designs to life, exceeding expectations time and time again. After many successful years at the Registered Master

Builders House of the Year, both regionally and nationally, the company had a break from entering after being awarded a Platinum Award. The Platinum Award recognises builders who have won five National

Category Awards – Clive Barrington Construction had 13. As 2021 rolled around the company thought it was about time to front up again at the awards with a sample of its recent work. The rest is history.

Bringing home the gold B

And the gold goes to… M & S Construction of Queenstown for a home in the over $2million category.

uilder Marty Hulsman is over the moon at his company’s success in the Southern House of the Year awards. “This is only the second time we have entered one of our homes in the awards and it is really good for our team to be recognised as doing an outstanding job.” The house is spectacular in design and location. Curving around a ridge on Queenstown Hill the views span from the Crown Range in the east to Walter Peak in the west with the Remarkables Range taking centre stage. To take optimum advantage of those views and of the sun that is so important for southern home owners, architect Christine Hall has made the house long and narrow and stepped up the hill on six split levels as the ground rises. This feature allows the house to remain closely

connected to the terrain, a concept further enhanced through the use of schist and cedar cladding. Inside, the house is divided in two by a full-height honed brick wall, while panels of coloured glass in the entranceway transform the sun into rainbows. “We love the challenge of building architecturallydesigned houses,” says Marty Hulsman. “This project presented a few to keep us thinking ahead to overcome any issues that might arise. That’s where our years of experience are invaluable. We had to deal with both solid rock and softer earth, as well as with a very steep site. Because there are so many levels and angles in the house, the build took the best part of three years to complete. Winning the Gold Award is the culmination for us of a very satisfying project.” mandsconstruction.co.nz

A future classic Creativity coupled with a client-focus is at the heart of all interior designer Davinia Sutton’s work. A kitchen and bathroom recognised at the 2021 NKBA (National Kitchen and Bathroom Awards) is a consummate example.

M

y clients reside in a classic pavilion-style architecturally-designed home in a rural setting,” says Davinia.

“They wanted their kitchen to have a strong connection to the outdoors, as well as to complement the forms and

materials of the architecture.” A careful mix of selected finishes including natural and engineered bench tops and soft matt painted and veneerstained joinery achieve the desired outcome. Although the joinery is applied to reflect the form and detail of the architecture, it still provides a modern twist on the traditional cabinetry ‘panelled’ door profile “The bathroom also called for that mix of modern luxury and connection to the surrounding architecture. Our design

response is a master bedroom wing complemented by a sensual bathroom space with a modern Hampton’s aesthetic.” To bring this together the colour palette is kept simple with a mix of finishes providing the desired sense of warmth and luxury. A feature charcoal mineral stone bath placed in front of shutter- clad windows creates a sense of sophisticated style and classic charm. “The overall result is a space that our clients will cherish for years to come.”

Rock solid craftsmanship A “supreme” house - simple in form, but flawlessly constructed. That’s Te Toka, the Queenstown house designed by Rafe Maclean Architects and built by DCD Builders, which won the Supreme Award in the Registered Master Builders Southern House of the Year, plus several other awards in the competition.

T

he whole house is one seamless piece of architecture,” says Dennis Dowling of DCD Builders. “It was highly rewarding to work on as we were involved from the outset by the client and assembled the full team from architect to all the sub-trades.” From the quality of the build to the mastery of the craftsmanship this house in Jacks Point is exceptional. Its simple form belies the complexity, technology and workmanship required of the build over 19 months. A standout feature is that the landscape has contributed to the house through the use of quarried schist from

the site itself. The house is energy-neutral and completely self-sufficient – a home that looks to the future of environmental sustainability. “We were blown away by the win. It was very emotional because it was so unanticipated.” Successfully building architecturally designed homes involves collaborative teamwork, and that is certainly true of Te Toka. A standout feature of the house is the beautiful joinery designed by Sue Nauman Design and manufactured and installed by Nasko Factory.

“This was an epic project for us, spread over a year and a half,” says Steve Walak of Nasko Factory. “The sheer scale of it was a challenge as the house is 820sqm, including a separate apartment. Our role was to manufacture all the joinery for the kitchens, walk-in robes, bathrooms and laundries, as well as making built-in shelving in the living areas.” The results are spectacular – crisp white high gloss joinery complemented by black features and flecked engineered stone in both the kitchens and bathrooms. The banks of cupboards in the kitchens flow seamlessly and the walk-in robes and laundries are full of different clever storage spaces. “It was extremely satisfactory to complete the work in the timeframe allowed. We were delighted the house won the highest award and to know we were part of it all.” www.dcd.co.nz
