Because of different circumstances (such as tuition and surf ) he has lived and traveled to many places; places where he learned about architecture and people. He became a father in the year 2000 when his son Keoni was born. winding two-lane highway flows like a ribbon from Puerto Vallarta down south towards Manzanillo through the heart of the Costalegre, or “happy coast”. Upscale private resort enclaves intermingle with once-forgotten fishing villages which have been discovered by nature and beach lovers and are now ideal destinations for people seeking sun, sand and solitude. Three main bays make up the Costalegre: Navidad, Tenacatita and Chamela. Just north of Manzanillo airport (ZLO), Barra de Navidad and Melaque are the bustling hubs of the Costalgre on opposite ends of the Bahia de Navidad, with markets, quaint cobblestone streets with storefronts selling handicrafts and knick knacks, and numerous beachside restaurants specializing in seafood. port fishing for some is a passion; they live it, breathe it, dream it and talk it – with their friends, their acquaintances and with other sport fishing enthusiasts on chat and forum sites dedicated to the topic of sport fishing. For me, fishing is not such a passion but I do really like to get out on the water with some friends to fish and if we happen to bring in a mahi mahi or a yellow fin tuna to cook, or even a Sierra for ceviche so much the better. Sometimes we head way out to sea for five or six hours and those trips are fun. Once we were only about 300 yards from a passing freighter – they look really big from a panga. I don’t have the skill to fish the big trophy fish though, which I would release anyway so some of my favorite fishing trips are short, two or three hour trips either at first light or in the afternoon around 5:00 pm, just outside of Bahia de Navidad. My favorite time to fish is pg. 24

l deporte de la pesca es para algunos una verdadera pasión; lo viven, lo respiran, lo sueñan y hablan de ello – con conocidos, con sus amigos, y con otros entusiastas de este deporte en el chat y en los forum de los sitios de Internet que se dedican al tema del deporte de la pesca. Para mi la pesca no es tan apasionante pero realmente me gusta salir a pescar al mar con algunos amigos y si tenemos suerte de regresar con un Mahi Mahi (Dorado) o un atún aleta amarilla para cocinar, o al menos una Sierra para un ceviche entonces es aún mejor. Algunas veces nos vamos mar adentro por cinco o seis horas y son paseos divertidos. Una vez estuvimos tan sólo como a 280 metros de un buque carguero - se ven realmente grandes desde una panga. Yo no tengo la habilidad para pescar un gran pez de trofeo, el cual dejaría ir de todos modos, así que algunos de mis paseos de pesca favoritos son cortos, como dos o tres horas ya sea al salir el sol o por la tarde alrededor de las 5:00 pm, apenas fuera de la Bahía de Navidad. Aunque mi hora favorita para pescar es en la madrugada por los amaneceres. La gente elogia mucho los atardeceres y las puestas de sol, pero para mi, no hay nada más espectacular que el sol saliendo pg. 24

Catch and Release Facts Local boat captains will practice catch and release fishing, especially on the billfish, when asked. Sea to Sierra who operate the Barra office for Nautimar S.A. De C.V., the water sports provider at Grand Bay and Careyes hotels, are one of the only local companies that openly advertise and promote catch and release, however, all fishing guides and captains will comply upon request.

Pescar y soltar Los capitanes de los botes locales practican este tipo de pesca, pescar y soltar, si se les solicita, especialmente con los peces picudos. Some captains may try to avoid catch and release, saying they need the fish to feed their families – not always true. This is an area where there is plenty of food and no one is going to go hungry if they don’t have billfish to eat.

If you want to catch and release with a local captain and are concerned about this you may want to bring a supply of circle hooks with you as he may not have them.

article / artículo gans. For this reason circle hooks are recommended for live bait fishing. A circle hook is designed to be swallowed yet can be easily drawn back out of the fish. Whether using circle hooks, un-barbed hooks or regular hooks if the hook won’t come out easily the best course is to simply cut the line as close as possible to the fish’s mouth because a hook left in a fish is not necessarily a death sentence. Exposed hooks made from nickel, steel or bronze will disintegrate in salt water, normally within 48 hours. Another cause of mortality is when a fish spends a long time fighting. The physical exertion of the fight causes an oxygen deficit in the tissues so lactic acid builds up in the muscles and then passes to the blood having an adverse effect on the blood pH. Before release try to re-oxygenate the fish by bringing it in alongside the boat, holding the bill firmly while the fish is in the water at the side of the boat and motoring slowly so that the fish can get water that contains oxygen through its gills. The fish will let you know when it is ready to return to the deep and you can let it go. Billfish stocks are limited in all waters so, please if you like to angle for them consider catch and release as an alternative that will enable you to enjoy the sport today as well as preserve this valuable and threatened resource for next time – and for future generations.

El pez espada escasea en todas las aguas, así que por favor si está a su favor, considere pescar y soltar como una alternativa para disfrutar su deporte así como preservar este valioso recurso que está en riesgo, para la próxima vez que salga de pesca y para las futuras generaciones.

People rave over the sunsets but for me, there is nothing more spectacular than the sun coming up over Laguna Navidad or – if we get away while it is still dark – the sun coming up over the ocean. On one quick trip last winter we headed out a little late, about 7:30 am instead of 7 am which is the normal departure time. We had just cleared the channel and were setting the lines, heading out around the point towards El Viejo when the first fish hit, a nice mahi mahi that we quickly landed and was perfect for dinner for us four fisher folk. We trolled around El Viejo only twice before the second fish, a sierra or Spanish mackerel, hit. Rod landed it and we made pg. 32 plans for ceveche for lunch.

A fishing license is not required when fishing from land. It is no longer a requirement that private boats be registered for private sport fishing but all boats that are used for sport fishing charter are required to be registered with the Port Captain in their jurisdiction and Captained by a Mexican National who holds a fishing license from Conapesca. Fines of up to $5000 pesos can be levied against anyone fishing in Mexican waters without the proper license and permission. Fish caught under a sport fishing license are for private consumption only and may not be used for monetary gain.

No se requiere un permiso si se pesca desde tierra firme. Ya no es un requisito que los botes privados sean registrados para el deporte de pesca privado, pero todos los botes que se utilicen como charter para el deporte de la pesca deben estar registrados con el Capitán de Puerto de su jurisdicción y capitaneados por un nacional mexicano que tenga una licencia de pesca de la Conapesca. Se pueden levantar multas hasta por $5000 pesos a cualquiera que se encuentre pescando en aguas mexicanas sin la licencia y permisos apropiados. Los peces que se capturen bajo licencia del deporte de pesca son para consumo propio solamente y no podrán usarse para lucro.

Charter operators normally charge flat fee for a five or eight hour trip but some providers also offer bottom and inshore fishing by the hour with a minimum trip time of two hours. Prices, while they may be somewhat negotiable, are pretty standard by type of boat and engine and are calculated based on both time and fuel consumption. So, just remember, if you negotiate the price too far down the scale for offshore fishing you may not wind up fishing where you want to be.

Rather than head over to Lampoya where I have caught nice mahi mahi before, we trolled up and down just off of Playa de Coco and took more turns around El Viejo but the fish had lost their appetites and we didn’t even get another nibble that morning. That’s why they call it “fishing”, not “catching”. Not that we minded, coming in completely de-stressed and relaxed, with two fish, I for one was content and ready to get on with the rest of my day. Tenacatita, which means “colored rocks”, lies approximately 9 kilometers from the highway, and was so named because of a ridge of reddish rock rising out of the south end of the bay. Locals say centuries ago, the Aztecs who populated this sunny bay used pieces of the fiery stone in building their homes. Today, the fine golden sand and gentle surf form an ideal setting for relaxed family fun. Angus is fast asleep and it takes some effort to get him going. “Angus, Angus”, “tiburones, tiburones”, “come on shark boy, let’s go!!!” Angus sits up, shakes his head, and says “Papa, Papa” “tiburones?” “Yippee!” I haul the shark chumming gear over to the docks of downtown Manzanillo with Angus in tow. Jeremy Lusch and Capitan Moño of Albatross III are pleased to see Angus and I, and we all comment on how calm the sea is, and the expectation of a perfect day ahead. The boat chugs into gear and off we go with Moño busy spinning out the lines at the back of the boat. First the four main lines are out and then the two outriggers with the teasers for sailfish. By the time we round the Manzanillo lighthouse the sun is beginning to make its first appearance over the Sierra Madre Mountains of Michoacán to the east. Beautiful! A perfect day, not a cloud in the sky, a very slight gentle swell on the ocean, and with sea surface temperatures at 26 degrees Celsius: perfect for sailfish and dorado. All we need now are the fish! My objectives are two-fold; a hookup with sailfish and/or dorado, and chumming for sharks. But first I need fresh bonito for the sharks! We cross pg. 56 Manzanillo Bay and straight

We are hit by four bonito at once and the action is on big time! All hands to the lines and even Angus joins in on the action, reeling in a bonito almost bigger than he is! Right at this point we are joined by some Bottlenose Dolphins so we decide to head over to the coast of Majahual and Isla Peña Blanca to begin chumming as we now have enough bonito. I immediately get into the messy job of filleting bonito and jamming the fillets through a hand-turned mince grinder to make chum. Bonito, a smaller relative of the tunas, is an oily fish and sharks love them. Mako Sharks are especially fond of fresh bonito but with sea surface temperatures at 26 Celsius, we are more likely to encounter Silky Sharks or “Grey Whalers” and not the cooler water loving pg. 58 Makos. Silkies are in the same fampg. 55

They’re such good survivors that they’ve had little need to evolve in the last 150 million years. · A shark may grow and use over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime! · Sharks never run out of teeth. If one is lost, another spins forward from the rows and rows of backup teeth. · Almost all sharks are “carnivores” or meat eaters. They live on a diet of fish and sea mammals (like dolphins and seals) and even such prey as turtles and seagulls. · Their skin is made of denticles instead of ordinary fish scales. The denticles are constructed like hard, sharp teeth and help to protect the shark from injury.

It was Bulls that were responsible for the fatal shark attacks at Playa Troncones near to Zihuatanejo, earlier this year. This group of sharks also includes the beautiful Bronze Whalers (affectionally called “Bronzies”), Blacktips, Tiger Sharks, Blue Sharks, and Oceanic Whitetips. Collectively this group is known as the Requiem Sharks (derived from the term “Requiem Mass” or “Funeral Mass”). In other words, these are the sharks of legend and lore, the veritable leviathans of the deep. I ask Moño to keep an eye out on surface currents so I can drop the chum bucket over board and begin chumming. We are searching for a good strong current, preferably with flotsam under which will be baitfish, and hopefully, further below will be sharks and game pg. 60 fish. Now all we need is a

good current. We pick up the current that runs between the coast of Majahual and Peña Blanca and I drop the chum bucket overboard. We go a couple of nautical miles against the current and then as Moño cuts the engine, I attach a complete bonito to one of the lines and throw it overboard. We now drift quietly along with the current, the chum bucket doing its thing, spreading out small pieces of bonito into the current. Then just as we ignore the lines “BANG!” the rod with the bonito doubles over completely and the reel starts to scream. We all jump up and yell “Shark!” But it isn’t. A big bull dorado has come down the chum slick and chomped the bonito in half. Jeremy grabs his spinning rod and after a couple of quick casts has the bull dorado on the end, leaping clear out of the water, fighting spectacularly. Great fishing, but NO sharks! Where there should have been 15 to 20 Silky Sharks racing around the chum bucket, we have nothing more than small bait fish picking off bite sized bits of chum. The sharks have simply gone. pg. 58

Le pido a Moño que no deje de observar las corrientes de la superficie para que pueda botar la cubeta de carnada por la borda y comenzar a atraer los tiburones. Jeremy agarró la caña y después de un par de rápidos lanzamientos tenía el dorado al final de la línea, brincando fuera del agua, luchando espectacularmente. ¡Gran pesca, pero SIN tiburones! Donde debió haber 15 o 20 tiburones atuneros siguiendo el rastro dejado por la cubeta de cebo, lo único que pudimos observar fue pequeños peces arrancándole minúsculos pedazos al cebo. Simplemente los tiburones han desaparecido.

Why are sharks so important? An incredible discovery was made recently when scientists of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography visited a remote and uninhabited pristine reef in the Central Pacific. The assessment of Kingman Reef turned up an unusual find: An inverted food pyramid where predators such as sharks accounted for 85 percent of the total fish biomass. What this means, is that on pristine reefs, sharks are the dominant species. There are more predators than prey! The reef is simply full of sharks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a bit like the Serengeti being full of lions instead of wildebeest and zebras! And these pristine reefs are able to recover from damage due to hurricanes and most importantly, they show resilience to global warming. Kingman reef exhibits healthy coral populations and is nearly absent of seaweed and has low microbe concentrations, unlike evidence found elsewhere on disturbed reefs where sharks are few or absent. This is an incredible find as it points to just how important sharks are in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. And to find that sharks accounted for 85 percent of the total marine fish biomass is astonishing. Such a discovery indicates that the coral reefs around Manzanillo are in serious trouble. The reef at Carrizales (Juluapan Peninsula) and the reef at La Boquita, dominated by pg. 66 small fishes and algae, are classic examples of reefs in

poor terminal health. Offshore, the whole Eastern Pacific ecosystem has been devastated. Large sharks have simply disappeared. And catch rates for species such as Red Snapper (Huachinango) are down 85 percent with a predominance of juvenile fish now appearing in the markets and on restaurant tables. The tuna fishery is now on the verge of collapse. In fact, what we are seeing right now is a total collapse of the commercially important fisheries along the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The current indiscriminate use of drift gillnets, fixed bottom gill nets, and inshore longlines, are responsible for the drastic decline in local fish populations, elimination of large sharks from inshore waters (especially pregnant females), and the heavy mortality of reproductive aged marine turtles. Of course people don’t want to hear this type of news. But the reality is a total crash of commercial fish populations and the complete disappearance of large sharks. For marine turtles, the collection of eggs and release of hatchlings is a complete waste of time if you fail to protect the breeding adults! pg. 65

We are, in fact, the last generation to witness large sharks in the world’s oceans Are there immediate answers to this problem? Yes there are!

1) A total and immediate ban on the use of all types of gillnets with a return to traditional line fishing.

2) A complete ban on bottom trawling. 3) Dedicated application of NOM 029 by Mexican fisheries offi-

cers and PROFEPA: Only those fishermen who hold current permits and equipment as stipulated under the new NOM 029 should be entitled to fish.

4) Establishment of no-take zones in the Eastern Pacific. 5) Use of “catch shares” as opposed to “open access” fishe-

ries—the normal catch-all-you-can system. The catch share initiative grants each fisherman a fixed percentage of the fishery’s total allowable catch. Such shares can be bought and sold like stock in a corporation. As the fish population recovers and the total allowable catch is raised, the price of each share goes up.

6) Active exclusion of foreign fishing vessels from Mexico’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Dichas acciones podrían ser vendidas y compradas como valores en una compañía. Conforme la población de peces se recupera y el total de captura permitida se eleva, el precio de cada acción sube.

6) Expulsión activa de botes pesqueros foráneos de la Zona Económica Exclusiva de México. (ZEE).

fter two years of not visiting Natura Camp, we decided to go back and see what’s new at the beautiful site full of adventure, immersed in the tropical jungle in the town of Francisco Villa, only 5 minutes from the Port of Manzanillo. When we arrived we were surprised to see three camping tents set up for us. As soon as you enter the village you can feel a shift in temperature, and the foliage is beautiful. At sunset we travel towards the UMA reserve (Environmental Conservation Unit) for “white tailed” deer. This reserve, as explained by our guide Diego, has intensive breeding areas working with conservation techniques and careful handling in natural settings. These breeding areas

Primero reservamos para ir a acampar, hay que ir preparados con equipo, sobretodo con unas buenas chamarras ya que en esta época el frío en la noche es demasiado. Al llegar nos sorprendió ver que nos tenían montadas tres casas de campaña, desde la entrada al pueblo se siente un cambio de temperatura y el paisaje es hermoso. A punto del atardecer, nos dirigimos hacia la re-

serva UMA (Unidad de Mantenimiento Ambiental) de venados “cola blanca”. Esta reserva, explicaba Diego nuestro guía, son criaderos intensivos y extensivos que operan mediante técnicas de conservación y manejo de especies que se desarrollan en condiciones naturales. Estos criaderos consideran diferentes aspectos para el desarrollo de las especies, tanto el biológico, social y cultural, vinculados a los ecosistemas y sus componentes. Lo más increíble para nosotros fue cuando llegamos y “Xolo”, el encargado del cuidado de la UMA y de todo el parque ecológico, empezó a llamar a los venados con un silbido, de un momento a otro nos vimos rodeados de pg. 79

These reptiles, just like the deer, are always being observed and their care includes a special diet of fruits and vegetables, like melon, papaya, spinach, carrots, lettuce, etc. The trip is very pleasant, walking amongst nature, between enormous tropical trees, where the views are energizing. “Xolo” told us that Natura Camp has 39 hectares of ecological reserve, and many projects to develop, like bike and horseback trails, as well as a natural spring pool, which will soon be available to the public. Now that we were awake, and before breakfast, we decided to take a ride on the zip line, recently upgraded by “The Original Canopy Tour. This

high tech system has carbon fiber cables that can support up to one ton in weight, which makes them the safest zip lines in the world. Natura Camp has 5 zip lines, the longest is 800 meters long between the top of one hill to another, at 100 meters in the air. The real adventure begins when you are on your way up to the zip line and you cross a hanging rope bridge which is very fun, and safe. At the top of the hill you can see an impressive view of the Bay of Manzanillo. You think you won’t be able to do it, but it’s either take off, or walk all the way down the hill, so without another thought, you’re off flying!! 5 tirolesas, la más larga recorre 800 metros de distancia entre la punta de un cerro a otro, a una altura de 100 metros. Pero la aventura realmente comienza desde el trayecto de subida, al cruzar por un puente colgante, el cual es muy divertido, y seguro. Al llegar a la punta y ver la impresionante vista de la bahía de Manzanillo desde arriba, crees que no lo podrás hacer, pero es eso o hacer todo el recorrido de regreso caminando cuesta abajo, así que sin pensarlo mucho, nos lanzamos ¡¡a volar!!, la adrenalina es tal que no se piensa en otra cosa más que en el momento que estas viviendo, “esto una experiencia para contar y disfrutar” pensé, y más cuando vi a Carlitos tirarse de la tirolesa más grande, creí que iba a morir de miedo, pero el pequeño nos demostró valientemente a todos que la vida hay que disfrutarla y que debemos hacer un lado los miedos para poder vivirla intensamente. Así recorrimos las 5 tirolesas con igual emoción hasta llegar de nuevo a tierra firme. No pudimos haber pasado un mejor fin de semana, el equipo de Natura Camp nos hizo sentir como en casa, fuera de ella, rodeados de tanta armonía pero a la vez mucha aventura y diversión. Si quieres pasar un fin de semana de ecoaventura Natura Camp es ideal, ofrece grandes áreas verdes para el esparcimiento familiar, con juegos para los más pequeños, área de comida, un Temazcal (el cual si se quiere utilizar hay que hacer previa cita) y un excelente servicio. Miramar Along Miramar, the main hangout for many hotels in the bay, beachfront restaurants with lounge chairs and umbrellas provide the perfect location to watch the day unfold with a plate of ceviche and a cervesa. Whales and dolphins are often spotted playing in the waters just offshore. The sand on the beaches is creamy beige and flecked with gold that glimmers in the midday sun. The waves are a good size for frolicking with boogie boards. Certain portions of the beach have low tides that wash gently onto the sand, creating safe shallow areas for small children. Locals tell of finding gold coins wash up on shore from a sunken ship rumored to hold $1 million in gold. Playa de Oro es un paraíso virgen a 20 minutos al norte de Manzanillo pasando el aeropuerto. Chandiablo A scant few kilometers after turning off of the main boulevard in Salahua we pass under the Colima highway and the scenery changes abruptly from urban city to open countryside. We stop as a farmer herds his cattle down the narrow two lane paved road and then continue on, passing small farms sown with corn and chilies ripening in the sun and small ranches where cattle graze peacefully. This dish was created by Brother Pascual on the occasion of a banquet in honor of Juan de Palafox, Viceroy of New Spain and Archbishop of Puebla, who was visiting his diocese. The head cook, Fray Pascual, was a nervous man, and, being in a hurry, was rushing around the kitchen. While heading to the pantry with a tray piled high with ingredients, he accidentally stumbled -- right in front of the huge pot where some succulent turkeys had just about finished cooking. That was the end of the chilies, pieces of chocolate, and the wide variety of spices; and the Viceroy’s dinner was ruined. However, the result of Fray Pascual’s mistake turned out to be a complete success, and from then on, everyone has praised the accidentallycreated dish.

Fue creado por Fray Pascual en una ocasión que Juan de Palafox, Virrey de la Nueva España y Arzobispo de Puebla, visitó su diócesis y se le ofreció un banquete en su honor. Fray Pascual, un hombre nervioso, era el cocinero principal y ese día por la prisa corría por toda la cocina. Éste amontonó en una charola todos los ingredientes para guardarlos en la despensa, y sin querer fue a tropezar exactamente frente a la cazuela, donde unos suculentos guajolotes estaban ya casi en su punto. Allí fueron a parar los chiles, trozos de chocolate y las más variadas especias, echando a perder la comida que debía ofrecerse al Virrey. Pero el resultado de su error fue todo un éxito y todo el mundo elogió el accidentado platillo, hasta hoy en día.

ne of the most pleasant ways to get away from stress and from daily routines is to travel – to find new landscap es for relaxing or just getting in touch with nature. In the state of Colima, there is a wide range of places where this is possible. However, there is one spot that awes both local p eople and visitors, a place known for its natural beauty, its cool climate, and its friendly p eople – this is Minatitlán. On this trip we traveled from the dense fog of its cloud forests to the icy waters of its cascades, encountering on the way brightly colored towns and temp erate coffee plantations. Our first stop was El Terrero, a small town tucked high into the Sierra de Manantlán, where we found the cloud forest, an eco-system pg. 110

In this typ e of forest, thick fog dominates the landscap e, and imbues the place with an air of mystery, so that the little wooden houses can scarcely be discerned amidst its singular beauty. Among all this magnificence there was something that commanded our attention: little ‘flags’ flying overhead. This isn’t a typo; you read it correctly, little flags. Flags with wings, brilliant with green, white and red, which flew above us and around us. These were no less than the pájaro bandera, or “flag bird”, also known as the mountain trogon or the Mexican trogon. They are related to the quetzals, which are also classified as being in the trogon family. pg. 112

A bird exp ert told us that they live not only in the Sierra de Manantlán, but also elsewhere in this country, esp ecially where there are cloud forests, pine forests, or a mix of pines and oaks. Surrounded by all this beauty, we could sample the local apples, p eaches, and blackberries; walk along the mystery-shrouded roads; and marvel at the brilliantly-colored sunset. If you decide to visit this out-of-the-way area and want to camp, you can ask the local p eople to show you the p erfect spot for this kind of activity, a campground called Los Pinitos located nearby. Our second stop was the town of Minatitlan. Right in its center is the main plaza, a garden surrounded by imposing arches and a beautiful kiosk sheltered by the church. Here, during the first days of January, p eople celebrate the Virgin who is the local patron saint with folk dances, music, pilgrimages and much noisy merriment. Minatitlán also has a Coffee and Mining Fair, since it is one of the major coffee producers in the state, and has pg. 114 mexicanus. pg. 112 as well the largest iron ore deposit in the country. After visiting the downtown, we walked to a lake that is fifteen minutes outside of town. This is a magical lake, known, because of its round shap e as Ojo deMar, or Eye of the Sea. Some local residents swear that a large green monster lives in it, and that whoever sees it will be possessed by the place – true legends from an enchanted town. Nearby is a river called Los Copales, where, if you walk upstream, you can find pieces of quartz. Our third stop was at the little town of Agua Fría, where there is a reserve called La Gloria Escondida, which is dedicated mainly to the conservation and protection of deer. Here we enjoyed the beautiful view of its steep rocks and its coffee plantations – The smell of coffee is so p enetrating! But it will p enetrate your soul even more if you take time to enjoy a walk along the trail you find here. Continuing our trip among the valleys and glades of Minatitlan, we come to our last stop, El Salto. This is a cascade which has long awed its visitors, including some poets who maintain that the gods were very generous in endowing it with such sp ecial beauty. pg. 112 ponentes arcos y un hermoso quiosco bajo el cobijo de su iglesia, en este lugar los primeros días del mes de enero celebran a la Virgen del pueblo con danzas, música, peregrinaciones y mucha algarabía. También Minatitlán celebra su Feria del Café y Minería, ya que a nivel estado es uno de los productores más importantes de café y a nivel nacional cuenta con el depósito mineral de hierro más grande del país. Después de visitar el centro nos dirigimos caminando a un lago que se localiza a 15 minutos del pueblo, un lago místico, pues debido a su forma redonda es conocido como el Ojo de Mar. Algunas personas del pueblo aseguran que dentro del lago vive un monstruo verde, y que cualquiera que llegue a verlo queda poseído por el lugar, verdaderas leyendas de un pueblo mágico. Cerca de ahí se localiza un río llamado Los Copales, que si lo recorres cuesta arriba podrás encontrar algunas piedras de cuarzo. Nuestra tercera escala fue por un pueblito llamado Agua Fría, ahí se encuentra la reserva La Gloria Escondida, dedicada principalmente a la conservación y protección de venados, disfrutamos de la hermosa vista, de sus riscos y cafetales. ¡Qué penetrante es el olor a café!, pero más penetra el alma si lo haces disfrutando del sendero que ofrece este lugar. Siguiendo con nuestro recorrido entre los valles y cañadas de Minatitlán llegamos a nuestra última escala, la cascada llamada El Salto, hermoso lugar que por mucho tiempo ha maravillado a sus visitantes, en donde in- pg. 117

Following the course of the river, five hundred meters below El Salto, a miniscule stream jets forth its waters from above, forming another stunning cascade. Este sitio se encuentra a tan sólo un kilómetro del yacimiento ferrífero de Peña Colorada y a 8 kilómetros de Minatitlán. El Salto es una espectacular cascada de 25 metros de altura que la forma el río Marabasco que corre entre formaciones rocosas al fondo de una pequeña barranca. De trecho en trecho, esta caída de agua forma cristalinos y refrescantes estanques naturales, ideales para disfrutar de una zambullida. Cerca de este bello sitio hay varios lugares para descansar, un chapoteadero, restaurantes y todo lo necesario para disfrutar del hermoso paisaje, a los que puede acudir principalmente en tiempg. 114
