Springtime arrives in a gentle waft of color washing over the jungle and leaving multihued
blossoms in her path. The ocean warms from the constant heat of the tropical sun, and underwater sea creatures delight snorkellers and dives alike. Fields of banana also flourish under the live giving rays, stretching out in harmonious coexistence under towering coconut palms. And inland where breezes are cool the magnificent twin volcanoes of Colima loom above the city. Welcome to the Mexican Pacific.

de flores tropicales a su paso. Se envuelve en la calidez del constante calor del sol mientras las criaturas marinas son una maravilla para la gente buceando en las refrescantes aguas azules. Los campos de plátano también florecen bajo los brillantes rayos de sol, viviendo en armoniosa coexistencia debajo de las altas palmeras de coco. Y tierra adentro, donde la brisa es fresca, los magníficos volcanes de Colima se avecinan a la ciudad. Bienvenido al Pacífico Mexicano.

Growing Bananas in the Costalegre
Cosechando Plátanos en la Costalegre
Take
a drive through the Costalegre – especially around Cihuatlan, Rebalse, Aguacate, Jaluco and Barra de Navidad – and you see hectares and hectares of banana plants growing in the sun, their large leaves creating shady paths between the tall plants. Bananas love heat and humidity making the sea level fields of this area the perfect growing environment. Six varieties of banana are commonly grown in the Costalegre – Enano, Macho, Ratuan, Manzano, Pera and Dominico – representing a major cash crop for area farmers and their families. As a bonus for farmers, bananas are often grown together in the same field with the much taller coconut trees, thus providing them with two cash crops on one piece of land. Planting a new a banana field takes time and hard work. The fields must be cleaned, plowed and fertilized as bananas are heavy feeders and require lots of fertilizer throughout their life cycle. Once the fields are clean the banana stalks, called cabezas or heads, are planted in a 40 cm x 70 cm hole and covered completely with soil. The cabeza grows, sending a shoot up through the dirt to create the main banana stalk that will produce the first fruit. To reproduce, the main stalk of the banana plant grows smaller “sucker” shoots around itself that are all cut off to allow pg. 8

en la región de Cihuatlán, Rebalse, Aguacate, Jaluco y Barra de Navidad – verá multitudes de huertas de plátano ondeando debajo del sol, con sus grandes hojas entre los altos tallos ofreciendo sombra los caminos. Seis variedades de plátano son comunes por la Costalegre – Enano, Macho, Ratuan, Manzano, Pera y Dominco – representan una gran cosecha comercial para los plataneros y sus familias. Como un extra para los cultivadores, los platanares normalmente cohabitan la huerta con los cocoteros, ofreciendo así una cosecha doble y dos fuentes de ingreso a la vez. Para cosechar una huerta de plátanos, se requiere de mucho tiempo y esfuerzo. Los campos se tienen que limpiar, cosechar y fertilizar ya que necesitan muchos nutrientes y fertilizantes a lo largo de su ciclo de vida. Cuando ya se haya limpiado el campo, las cabezas de plátano se plantan en un hueco de 40 x 70 cm, y son cubiertas completamente con tierra. Las cabezas crecen, surgiendo de la tierra y creando cada una su primer tallo. Para reproducirse, estas plantas crean varios tallos secundarios que son cortados para permitir que el principal crezca más rápido para producir fruta. Bananas are harvested washed and packed right in the fields they are grown in. Starting just before first light the crew enter the field with a large truck and everything they need for the harvest. One man, using a machete, cuts two bunches of bananas directly onto the shoulders of one of the runners. The runner then runs to the process area behind the truck with his two bunches of bananas – each weighing about 50 kilos. Two other workers cut each bunch into “hands” culling damaged or undeveloped fruit at this time. The hands are then washed in a large vat to remove both chemical sprays and the viscous “sap” that is released when a bunch is cut from the stalk. If left, the sap will stain everything it touches a dark brown color, including the banana skins. After washing, the bananas air dry slightly and are packed into wooden crates lined with newspaper and plastic and loaded into the truck for shipment to Gualalajara where they are re-packed for shipment to market.
Los plátanos se cosechan, se lavan y se empacan en el mismo campo donde crecen. Empezando en la madrugada, los trabajadores pasan por el campo en un camión grande con todas las herramientas necesarias para la cosecha. Un hombre con un machete corta dos racimos de plátanos directamente encima de los hombros de los corredores. El corredor prosigue a correr hasta el área de procesamiento detrás del camión con sus dos racimos de plátanos encima, cada una con un peso de 50 kilos. Después se lavan las manos en un tobo grande para quitarse los químicos y la savia viscosa que se suelta al cortar el racimo. Si no se lava, la savia deja manchas color marrón oscuro en todo, incluyendo las cáscaras de los plátanos. Después de lavarse, los plátanos se secan al aire libre y se empacan en cajas de madera forradas en periódico y plástico y se cargan al camión para ser enviados a Guadalajara donde se vuelven a empacar para su envío al mercado.

pg. 5 the plant to focus energy on bearing fruit. The first fruit begins to grow about six months after the initial planting and is ready to harvest in about nine months. Bananas are cut while still green. The main stalk produces one large bud which houses male and female flowers which become one bunch of bananas before the stalk dies. Once a stalk has produced bananas it is cut off allowing the strongest sucker stalk to become the main stalk and produce the next bunch of bananas. This process can continue for years and an established field can produce bananas for harvest every 15 days. Bananas require a lot of maintenance; cutting back sucker shoots, clearing the area between plants, fertilizing, irrigating, and spraying for insects, molds and fungus. Have you ever wondered why the bananas on the trees are wrapped in blue plastic and newspaper? This is done once the fruit is formed but before harvest time to protect the bunch from cold, bruising during cutting, insects and the chemical sprays used throughout the growth cycle of the plant.

idday comes quickly to the coast. The sun sizzles on the sand, and forms shimmering, liquidy mirages that waver in the heat. Underwater, a different world appears on snorkeling and diving trips in the coolness of the serene blue. On clear days, you can see right down to the sandy floor. Multicolored fish flutter around in schools, feeding on bits of cracker crumbled into the water. Iridescent blue beauties the size of dinner plates dart among the rocky ledges. Fan coral reaches up toward the distant sky like huge hands with fingers outstretched. Lumbering midnight blue creatures covered with white polka dots graze serenely along the shallow outcropping of rock which jut into the water. Here’s a look at some of the most common aquatic creatures to spot in our waters: pg. 14

19 Retracing the footprints to Manzanillo´s historic past... Siguiendo las huellas hacia el pasado histórico...
L ong ago pirates and conquerors caught H ace a glimpse of Manzanillo’s golden beaches framed by jungle-covered peninsulas from great galleons at sea. Back in the 16th century Manzanillo was a virgin tropical paradise of sheltered coves and rocky shores, coconut groves and swaying palms on peninsulas of land that dipped like fingers into the sparkling Pacific Ocean. The Nahuatl indigenous peoples prospered along this fertile coastline and were the first to receive the ship captain Gonzalo de Sandoval who represented none other than the Spanish conquistador who would claim discovery of the Americas, Hernan Cortes. The historic meeting between the Spaniards and a local Indian chieftain was held in 1522 in the cupped bay of sand which eventually became known as Playa La Audiencia, after this monumental “first audience”. Today, the white tower of Tesoro Manzanillo marks the beach, where locals and visitors enjoy the watersports activities such as jet skiing, kayaking, banana pg. 20

En el siglo 16 Manzanillo era un paraíso tropical virgen, conformado de lindas bahías y costas rocosas, huertas de cocos y palmeras en penínsulas que se extendían como dedos entre el brillante Mar Pacífico. Los indígenas Náhuatl prosperaban a lo largo de esta costa fertil y fueron los primeros en recibir la nave del capitán Gonzalo de Sandoval, quien representaba al mismo Hernán Cortés. La histórica reunión entre españoles y un jefe de tribu local tuvo lugar en 1522 en la bahía que eventualmente llegaría a llamarse Playa la Audiencia, en honor a ese evento. boating and congregate to admire the fiery sunsets at dusk. The movie “10” which brought Manzanillo to fame with Bo Derek and Dudley Moore frolicking on the beach was filmed at La Audiencia. Both sides of the sheltered bay are lined with cliff-top homes and feature incredible snorkeling and diving to depths of 12 meters along a rock and sand floor. A small market tianguis offers up souvenirs such as painted terracotta pottery, shell jewelry, T-shirts. Club de Yates sits around the corner from La Audiencia in a crescent of sand ringed by rocky outcroppings that provide excellent underwater exploration. Several local dive shops offer night excursions in these waters to view the giant sleeping parrot fish in the shadows on the pg. 26 shallow left side of the bay.

Ambos lados de la bahía están repletos de casas sobre los riscos y ofrecen esnorqueleo y buceo hasta a 12 metros de profundidad por un fondo rocoso. About 100 meters offshore from Club de Yates – known by locals as Playa Perla – is a grouping of rocks that make for interesting snorkeling and diving encounters. Seahorses anchored to rocks are often spotted by divers who know what to look for, as well as moray eels, turtles, and a myriad of other colorful species. On weekend, families gather in this secluded beach to play in the gentle waves and picnic in the shade of several large trees on shore. People often dive for shellfish or try their luck fishing off the rocky points to the right of the beach. In the evenings as the sun dips down toward the horizon, there is practically no better place in the city to watch it slide into the ocean as the stars light up the sky.

Aproximadamente 100 metros mar adentro del Club de Yates – conocido por los locales como Playa Perla – se encuentra una agrupación de rocas ideales para esnórqueleo y buceo. Los buzos que saben buscar encuentran caballos del mar, morenas, tortugas marinas y un sin fin de otras especies marinas. Los fines de semana se reúnen muchas familias en está playa retirada para jugar entre las tranquilas olas y almorzar bajo la sombra de los árboles a la orilla. has developed the reputation as a “Mexico lover’s” paradise for its diverse beaches and laidback authenticity. Year-round sunshine and tropical surroundings that are often compared to the Hawaiian islands give sunseekers the perfect backdrop to appreciate Manzanillo’s charms. And the outdoor markets that fill the beaches, town squares and downtown centro make it easy to take home a memorable piece of real Mexico. Miramar Flea Market features a series of covered stalls right on the beach in Santiago Bay across from Club Maeva hotel complex. Merchants sell typical beach souvenirs such as sarongs, bathing suits, flip flops, and a whole array of local delicacies including coconut and tamarind candies, real vanilla and cajeta, a type of milk caramel. Miramar is also a good place to bargain for silver and shell jewelry. On the north end of the Santiago Bay inside Club Santiago neighborhood is La Boquita, a gentle stretch of sand at the mouth of the Juluapan lagoon where multicolored beach umbrellas and local seafood pg. 34

Several make-shift stalls are set up among the restaurants selling T-shirts and other beachwear but La Boquita’s specialty is the wandering vendors who sell hand woven hammocks, wood carvings, shell decorations and a huge variety of stone, shell and silver jewelry. This is also the place to try homemade ice cream in lime, coconut and tequila flavors, sweet pastries sold out of enormous baskets, or mangos on a stick served with lime, salt and chile. Trencitas (cornrow braids decorated with beads) are still in fashion thanks to Bo Derek, who made them and the area famous when she filmed the movie “10” in Manzanillo 30 years ago. The make shift Santiago outdoor market stretches from the main street about 20 blocks into the town only on Saturdays and is an excellent place to try your hand at bargaining. There is a silver jewelry shop and a knick knack store that features lots of handicrafts from around Mexico, including paper mache, candles and tin decorations. The main street in downtown Manzanillo, Avenida Mexico, is like a giant flea market with store after store selling the staple beach uniform: elegant linen shirts, dresses and drawstring pants. Other shops offer typical souvenirs such as postcards, T-shirts, and anything made of shells. Quench your thirst at the michoacanas, stores selling tasty fruitflavored waters by the liter. A covered stall area along M. Galindo off of Av. Mexico offers authentic dining on pozole, chile rellenos, fresh fish filets and fried chicken. Market Madness...
Local markets are treasure troves of hidden wonders. Remember: bargaining is a form of art. If you are reasonable, most merchants will lower the price a bit! - Miramar Flea Market are covered stalls right on the beach across from Club Maeva. Merchants sell typical souvenirs: candles, silver goods, and Aztec-inspired art. - Manzanillo Market is a local market downtown near the port that offers fresh fruits and vegetables, whole fresh fish, cuts of meat. Household items, local artisan pieces, and pottery can also be bought here. - Santiago Outdoor Market is set up each Saturday along the main strip in Santiago and is a good place to taste local flavors: tacos, fruit-flavored waters, and sugary fried-dough churros. - Audiencia Market is a small group of stalls on the public beach used by Hotel Tesoro Manzanillo. - Barra de Navidad offers lots of quaint storefronts with reasonably priced local handicrafts, pottery and everything you could want for the beach.

majestic twin peaks of the Colima volcanoes stretch into the blue skyline on clear days and are a familiar sight cloaked in age-old folk tales and modern day mystery. Located about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Colima, the volcano complex consists of the Volcan de Fuego (volcano of fire), the most active volcano in North America, and the Nevado de Colima (volcano of snow), the older, inactive brother. Legend tells of how the ancient Aztec spirit who inhabited the Nevado de Colima protected the surrounding villages and pueblos from the explosive and destructive temper of his younger brother, who lived in the Volcan de Fuego. The Volcan de Fuego formed roughly 2,500 years ago at a height of 5,000 meters (16,600 feet) above sea level, making it a menacing landmark probably seen from Manzanillo. Over time as the earth’s plates push the volcanic cone up through the existing core, the volcano has built back nearly 2,000 meters (6,700 feet). Visitors can see a ring around the volcano as the new cone thrusts upwards through the old cone. In 1869, a “volcanito” or little cone formed on the side of the Volcan de Fuego at around 2,000 meters (6,700 feet). Today, the volcano still has occasional historical eruptions that issue forth lava flows and pyroclastic flows and columns. From time to time, the army closes off roads to the summit
and evacuates villagers living in the shadow of the volcanoes in Laguna Santa Maria and La Yerbabuena. In 1991, Volcan de Fuego produced a dome that rose 30 meters (100 feet) above the crater rim and later collapsed, sending lava flows down the upper slopes of the volcano. And in June 2005, the volcano showed increased signs of activity six times in less than a month, causing officials to predict another massive eruption. Protective parenting. In an attempt to avoid sparking issues of territorial rights, Mexico’s Federal Constitution of 1917 severely restricted property ownership by foreigners. The Constitution proclaimed all land and water the right of the Mexican nation: it would either be ejido (communal) or owned by Mexican nationals only. Ejido land was given to every village in Mexico and could not be sold.

Opening the door a crack. More than 50 years later, the Foreign Investment Law is finally passed through the Mexican Constitution, allowing foreigners to purchase real estate anywhere in the country except in the restricted zone. At this time, the restricted zone encompassed areas within 100 kilometers (64 miles) of international borders or within 50 kilometers (32 miles) from the coastline at high tide.
Creating a loophole. In a bid to encourage foreign capital and jump start beachfront real estate development in the restricted zone, the Mexican government passed a constitutional amendment to create a “fideicomiso”. This 50 year renewable real estate bank trust allows Mexican banks to hold title for the property while obeying a fiduciary obligation as the trustee to follow instructions given by the beneficiary, or foreigner.

Share and share alike. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) accord between Canada, the United States and Mexico passed. A special amendment to the constitution is made allowing corporations to be 100% foreign-owned, and paving the way for non-Mexicans to purchase property in the restricted zone without having a fideicomiso. (Corporations can own beachfront property without the real estate bank trust.)

the sea to jungle, mountains to museums, the Mexican Pacific is a vibrant landscape of natural, colonial and historical beauty. Here are some highlights: Laguna La Maria—Well-loved by birders and hikers, the lagoon has a stunning view of the Colima volcanoes on clear days. Trails lead up into the hills or into the jungle around the lagoon, affording many chance encounters with nature. San Gabriel Caves—Discover the stalagmites and stalactites 30 meters down in the subterranean depths of caverns that were once a pre-Hispanic ceremonial site found 30 minutes from Ixtlahuacan on the way to Colima. Barra de Navidad—Found one hour north of Manzanillo in Jalisco, Barra is a quaint little beach town with lots of shops selling local crafts, pottery, paintings, trinkets and beach souveniers.
