Giant mantarrays that inhabit the deep also seem to delight in the new season. When the summer heat becomes overwhelming, there is always an escape inland in coolness of a little colonial town near the base of the volcanoes. Welcome to the Mexican Pacific.

The area is best known for Playas Barra de Navidad, Melaque, Cuastecomates, La Manzanilla, Boca de Iguanas, Tenacatita, Careyitos and Perula. However, nestled between these popular beaches, hidden away off of highway 200, other lesser-known beaches are waiting to be explored and enjoyed. If you are looking to catch an ocean breeze, chill out and get away from it all pack up the cooler, the beach umbrella and the beach blanket and read on... Located behind the community of Emiliano Zapata only a kilometer from the intersection of highways 200 and 80 Ranchito Beach is accessed via a shady dirt road that winds through the woods to the predominantly rock and gravel beach. Swimming is possible near shore but Ranchito is best known for surf. Kids like the beach because high tide leaves behind tidal pools in the rocks where they can play and observe marine creatures and tiny fish. About 2 km along the Tamarindo Resort access road at km 7.5 of highway 200, the private and steep dirt road to remote Playa El Palmito – best traveled on mountain bike or by high clearance vehicle – winds down through dense jungle affording an excellent opportunity for bird watching. Located in a small but long bay the secluded and usually deserted beach is good for boogie boarding, swimming and sunbathing. Continuing north, around km 36 an unmarked dirt road winds 6 km pg. 6

Sin embargo, situadas entre estas playas populares, se esconden lejos de la carretera 200 otras playas menos conocidas, esperando a ser exploradas y disfrutadas. Si está buscando disfrutar de la suave brisa marina, relajarse y escaparse de la vida cotidiana, llévese su hielera, su sombrilla, su toalla playera y síganos... Ubicada detrás de la pequeña comunidad de Emiliano Zapata a sólo un kilómetro del cruce de las carreteras 200 y 80, se llega a la Playa Ranchito por un camino de tierra que atraviesa de la selva hasta la playa donde abundan la piedra y la grava. Es posible nadar cerca de la playa, pero lo que atrae de Playa Ranchito es el surf. La playa es popular entre los niños porque las mareas dejan pozos entre las piedras donde pueden jugar y observar de cerca la fauna marina. A 2 km adelante de la carretera de acceso al Resort Tamarindo en el km 7.5 de la carretera 200, un camino escarpado de tierra nos lleva a Playa El Palmito. La mejor manera de llegar es en bicicleta de montaña o en un vehículo rústico a través de la densa selva que ofrece una excelente oportunidad para la observación de aves. Esta playa escondida y normalmente desierta, se ubica en una pequeña pero larga bahía; es buena para hacer boogie board, nadar y tomar sol. pg. 5 through farmland and Arroyo Seco the village before ending at southern Arroyo Seco beach. On foot or bike the beach connects directly with Playa El Tecuán to the south. Arroyo Seco and El Tecuán are favorites for local surfers and the ocean here is only suitable for very strong swimmers but the refreshing sea breeze and kilometers of flat packed sand also make these beaches great for walkers, joggers and sunbathers. Of all of the lesser-known beaches in the Costalegre the most spectacular are located roughly 64 km north of Melaque, down a cobblestone road off of highway 200, at the southern end of Chamela Bay. Here fine white and golden sand, the sparkling crystal blue and turquoise water, a cluster of small colorful islands, a shady green lagoon and a rocky headland strewn with cactus create a feast for the eyes. Playa El Negrito, the southern-most beach located in a cove just around a headland from the south end of Chamela Bay, boasts gentle waves, clear water and fine golden sand. The restaurant here is a great place to chill out in the shade with fresh seafood and a cold drink. Take a refreshing swim, snorkeling around the rocks at the edge of the cove or an easy climb up pg. 10

Beaches of the Costalegre
10 pg. 6 a trail to the top of the headland that separates El Negrito from the little fisherman’s cove and Chamela Bay to the north. From the top of the headland is a marvelous view of the surrounding countryside, Chamela Bay and the islands just off shore. Arrange a boat tour of the islands or a fishing trip with one of the handful of fishing panga captains that operate out of the little cove next to El Negrito. Rounding another small headland to the north of the fisherman’s cove opens the view to miles of fine white sand and the sparkling blue water and very gentle surf of southern Chamela Bay. Here you can enjoy more seafood and cold beverages in one of the small palapa restaurants, sunbathe on the glistening white sand, swim in the ocean, walk the beach for miles and miles or stroll down to the clear waters of the closed lagoon and observe the bird life in the mangroves. Whatever you choose to do you will be doing it in one of the most beautiful places in the Costalegre.

Desde la cima de la punta, la vista de la Bahía de Chamela y las islas es espectacular. Se puede arreglar un tour en barco a las islas o una excursión de pesca con los capitanes de las pangas que salen desde la pequeña ensenada a un costado de El Negrito. A la vuelta de otra punta hacia el norte de la ensenada de los pescadores la vista se abre para revelar una extensión panorámica de arena blanca, centelleante agua azul y el suave oleaje del sur de la Bahía de Chamela. Aquí también se pueden disfrutar de mariscos y bebidas frías en cualquiera de las pequeñas palapas que albergan los restaurantes de la playa, tomar sol sobre la brillante arena blanca de la playa, nadar en el mar, caminar por la orilla o cruzar a la laguna y observar las aves en los manglares. Sea la actividad que escoja, la estará haciendo en uno de los sitios más hermosos de la Costalegre.

To get to Ranchito Beach, just past km 0 turn left into Ranchito across the highway from the little police caseta. Drive four blocks up the street and turn left, then turn right again at the next corner and follow the road up a steep hill, keep going through the woods to the beach.

To get to El Palmito Beach, at km 7.5 turn left on to the Tamarindo Resort road, follow the cobblestone road around several curves up a high hill, on the first downhill slope around a couple more curves, about 2 km, watch closely on your left, the first dirt road you will see is the road to El Palmito, there is an iron gate that is usually open about 50 yards along the dirt road. To get to the beaches at Arroyo Seco, about km 36 turn left on to the dirt road. Follow the road through the little town and turn left for the south beach and right for the north beach. To get to Playa El Negrito, immediately after crossing the first little Chamela bridge, around the km 64 mark, make a left turn down off the highway onto a little cobblestone road and follow it about 2 km to the beach.

A la Playa El Palmito: en el km 7.5 dar vuelta a la izquierda en la calle de Tamarindo Resort, seguir el camino empedrado cuesta arriba por varias curvas. En la primera cuesta abajo después de un par de curvas más, aproximadamente 2 km, el primer camino de tierra que se ve es el camino a El Palmito. Hay una reja de hierro que normalmente está abierta a 50 m del camino. A las playas de Arroyo Seco: por el km 36 dar vuelta a la izquierda por un camino de tierra. Seguir el camino por el pueblito y dar vuelta a la izquierda para la playa del sur, derecha para la playa norte. A la Playa El Negrito: inmediatamente después de cruzar el primer puente de Chamela, por el km 64, dar vuelta a la izquierda por un pequeño camino empedrado y seguirlo por 2 km hasta la playa.

Mating Mantas...

Mantas enamoradas...
dolphin-like dorsal fins sliver simultaneously out of the water about 50 feet to the right of our double kayak. “Dolphins at starboard!” I shout and we pick up our paddling rhythm toward the craggy shore to get a closer look. Our eyes focus on the disappearing wake at the surface and shift slowly, reluctantly downward toward a black disk approaching in a leisurely fluid pulse. Before we can make any movement, two horns direct the blackness beneath us until it is all we can see. My intellect is catching up with my senses—we are poised above a 15-foot-wide manta ray! It’s no wonder that these creatures have earned the name “devilfish” but like many names ascribed by humans for what frightens them, this misnomer is undeserved. Mantas are docile beings of the sea. With recorded “wingspans” of up to 30 feet (9.1 m.) and weights of 3,100 pounds (1,400 k.) they do not invite petting. However, many bold divers have gone so far as to catch a ride on their monolithic backs. Not I or my paddling companions, Milora and Lobacita (a Mexican dog about half the size of one of the manta “horns”)! We’re already closer than we ever planned, gawking at the passing graceful colossus below that is languidly opening the black window shade once again to blue water. “Gentle giant” is the thought running through my head, and it is what keeps me calm throughout this day. We embarked from the sleepy fishing village of Chimo in the northern fringes of the Costalegre this early May morning on our way to Yelapa with expectations of a pg. 14

aletas dorsales rompen simultáneamente la superficie del agua a unos 20 metros del lado derecho de nuestro kayak doble. “¡Delfines a estribor!” aviso mientras subimos la velocidad de nuestro remar para acercarnos a la costa rocosa para poder verlos más de cerca. Nuestros ojos se fijan en la estela que desaparece sobre la superficie del agua para después seguir vacilantes hacia abajo hasta percibir una silueta negra acercándose lentamente hacia nosotros. Antes de que se nos ocurra qué hacer, dos cuernos dirigen la gran sombra oscura por debajo de nuestra posición, y por un momento ésta ocupa toda nuestra atención. Después de unos momentos de angustia, mi intelecto logra asimilar el mensaje de mis sentidos - ¡Estamos directamente por encima de una mantarraya de 5 metros de ancho! No es sorprendente que estas criaturas se han ganado el nombre de “pez-diablo”, como muchos de los nombres que el ser humano atribuye a lo que le causa terror, aunque éste en realidad no es el caso. Las mantarrayas son seres marinos muy dóciles. Con anchura de hasta 9.1 metros y peso de hasta 1400 kilos, son intimidantes y no invitan a tocarlos. Sin embargo, muchos osados buzos han llegado tan lejos como para sujetarse de ellos para disfrutar del viaje. Mis compañeros, Milora y Lobacita (un perro mexicano del tamaño de uno de los cuernos de la mantarraya) y yo no entramos en esa categoría de osados. Ya estamos más cerca de lo que nunca imaginábamos, mirando boquiabiertos al elegante coloso que pasaba lentamente abriendo la pg. 14

Now we find ourselves focused only on the rocks and water in the middle of a manta ray “mating train”, our kayak heading in the opposite direction of traffic and not knowing which lane to take. Several times we witness mantas breaching, like Frisbees flung from the water with fury. As many as 20 males

15 may follow a single female during mating season. Mantas are normally solitary except when they’re found at feeding and cleaning stations, and when they’re mating. In the end we witness about two dozen manta rays along our 15-kilometer paddle. Not one shows us any aggression, nor do they show any fear or curiosity when we approach. Rather, they are sucking up water and filtering out zooplankton, small fish and crustaceans, performing in their niche as filter feeders, one that has allowed them to grow larger than all other species of rays, which are still stuck bottom feeding. Oh, and those “horns”; they’re actually “cephalic lobes” that they use to scoop up plankton. This area of Pacific coastline, with its rocky substrate, appears to be an especially nutrient-rich environment, which likely explains their rendezvous choice. They are also mating. In this act, the male manta, which possesses a set of “claspers” on the inner margins of the pelvic fins, will chase the female nipping at her pectoral fins in order to impair her swimming. He then moves to her ventral surface, belly to belly, and inserts one of his claspers into her cloaca -- copulation lasts about 90 seconds. I watch the last two of the day sway together, dancing a Mobulidae swing to the rhythm of the swell, encompassed in a volcanic amphitheater, black on white, white on black.

Ahora, de pronto nos encontrábamos suspendidos entre rocas y agua concentrándonos en una cadena de apareamiento de mantarrayas, nuestro kayak lléndose en sentido contrario al tráfico y sin saber en qué carril meternos. En varias ocasiones vemos las mantasrrayas romper la superficie, como enormes frisbees lanzados con furia. Hasta 20 machos pueden llegar a seguir a una sola hembra en la temporada de apareamiento. Las mantarrayas son mayormente solitarias cuando no están en sus áreas de limpieza y alimentación y cuando se aparean. A lo largo de nuestro viaje de 15 km, terminamos viendo al menos 2 docenas de mantarrayas. Ninguna se mostró agresiva, pero tampoco mostraron temor cuando nos acercamos. Al contrario, ellos están filtrando los zooplánctones del agua, además de pequeños peces y crustáceos, este método de comer les ha permitido alcanzar un tamaño mayor a todas las especies de rayas, que se alimentan del fondo del mar. Y esos “cuernos” son realmente “lóbulos cefálicos” que utilizan para recoger plancton. Esta zona de la costa del pacífico, con su fondo rocoso, es un medio ambiente rico en nutrientes, que explica su presencia. También se están apareando. Este acto consiste en que el macho, que posee unos “agarradores” en el margen interior de sus aletas pélvicas, persigue a la hembra mientras le da mordisquitos en sus alas pectorales para impedir su natación. Luego pasa por su superficie ventral, panza con panza e inserta uno de sus “agarradores” en su orificio – el apareamiento dura aproximadamente 90 segundos. Whether it’s sugary fried dough churros Trátese de un churro con azúcar en el in downtown Manzanillo, a tall glass of chilled, fruity flavored water, or delicious sopes piled high with toppings, eating your way around town is a great way to savor Mexico. If plain beef tacos are an adventure, look no further than the “taco strip” along the main boulevard where there are countless stands selling their own version of the little pouch of meat. Try the tacos al pastor at El Rinconcito across from Bar de Felix for a tasty slow-cooked meat on a spit served with a slice of pineapple. A tip for the wise: look for busy stands as locals know where to go if they don’t want to get sick. The Saturday Santiago street market is also an ideal hotspot for local flavors. A taco stand serves them with all the fixings (fresh tomato salsa, guacamole, and a squeeze of lime) for a few pesos. Sample thirst-quenching fruit water in refreshing local flavors: tamarind, Jamaica (hibiscus flower), lime, orchata (cinnamon rice water) or coconut. Around the corner from the covered market in Santiago, you can’t miss the line of tall stools full of hungry eaters. It’s the best place to try homemade sopes, little tortillas with raised rims to hold in the tasty toppings. In the evenings, tasty tamales (little corn meal pouches wrapped in pg. 18

Si los tacos normales son una aventura, no vaya a otro lugar sino al boulevard principal donde hay una cantidad sin número de puestos de tacos, cada uno vendiendo su propia versión de plato típico. Pruebe los tacos al pastor de El Rinconcito, frente al bar de Félix, con su rica carne cocida lentamente en el asador y servida con rebanadas de piña. Un consejo sabio es buscar esos lugares llenos de gente local, puesto que ellos no sólo saben quién tiene el mejor sazón, sino qué lugares son los más higiénicos. Pero si acaso el pollo asado llama a su estómago, compre un paquete caliente del asado, mismo que incluye tortillas, arroz y salsas. Justo en el semáforo a la entrada de Santiago, en el local del toldo naranja brillante de Don Migue, donde con su receta de picosos sabores, siempre mantienen un continuo trafico de vehículos parándose a comprar pollos asados para llevar. El Tianguis de los sábados en Santiago, constituye también un lugar ideal para degustar los sabores de la comida local. Donde se sirven deliciosos pg. 18

Buttery corn meal steamed to perfection envelope chicken in green mole sauce, barbequed pork and a host of other stewed meats. Elote (corn off the cob) is served the local way, with chile, lime and a dab of cream. Locals have been visiting a small shack outside of Hotel Playa Santiago in Olas Altas for years and although the prices aren’t cheap nor the décor fancy, we can vouch for the freshness of seafood that tastes like it was plucked straight from the sea to your plate. In downtown Manzanillo don’t miss the street stand by the municipal library selling piping hot churros rolled in sugar. And amid the clutter of Avenida Mexico, duck down the side street Maria Galindo to a sprawling food market filled with senoras selling home cooked recipes at local prices. Try a bowl of steaming pozole, corn hominy stew with shredded pork, or some chile rellenos (stuffed chiles) smothered with tomato sauce.

Este es el mejor lugar para probar unos sopes caseros, especie de tortillas con bordes en su circunferencia, que mantienen los ricos ingredientes dentro. En las noches, se venden tamales caseros en unas ollas grandes que se ponen frente a los jardines de Santiago y Salahua, así como elotes, que son servidos a manera tradicional con crema, limón y chile. Los lugareños también tienen la palabra sobre los mejores mariscos en la zona. Siendo asiduos clientes por años de un pequeño puesto a las afueras del Hotel Playa Santiago en Olas Altas, no importando que los precios no son bajos, ni la decoración agradable, podemos asegurar la frescura de sus cócteles de ostras, camarones o pulpo, que saben como si fueran servidos directamente del mar a su plato. En el centro de manzanillo, existen también fabulosos lugares para probar los sabores de México. No deje de visitar el puesto de churros a un lado de la librería municipal que vende churros calientes cubiertos con azúcar. Y en medio de la abarrotada Avenida México, encontrara un mercado desordenado de comida, lleno de señoras que venden comida casera a precios locales. Conjunto Cultural: Ex hacienda Nogueras n I n the midst of a quiet little town, where E donde
time appears to have stood still, a small cobblestone lane washed by the fresh breeze and surrounded by mango, mamey, avocado, guava and other tropical trees, we find the walls of the old Hacienda Nogueras. Here in the ancient lands of the indigenous Ajuchitán, one can still see a great deal of Don Juan de Noguera’s original sugar cane hacienda where alcohol was produced in the 17th century. The old and the new are contrasted admirably, as the old chimney and chapel are still evident in the structures that were remodelled by famous Colimense artist Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo when he gave life to the cultural center and museum which he acquired in 1898 and maintained until 1996, when it became part of the University of Colima. The university established their Occidental Center for Anthropological Study and Design, Architecture and Aesthetics Research. The two level building is characterized by its artistic design, with the cedar, cypress and granadillo beams in the ceilings, two corridors supported by arches, the stone courtyard and a cobblestone terrace being some of the more pg. 42

medio de una tranquila población, parece que el tiempo se hubiera detenido, un camino empedrado escoltado por el fresco aire y rodeado de árboles frutales como el mamey, mango, aguacate, guayaba, se encuentran los muros de la ex Hacienda Nogueras. Aquí, donde anteriormente se ubicara la antigua población indígena de Ajuchitán, aún se conserva gran parte de la estructura de una vieja hacienda cañera que producia alcohol en el siglo XVII, la cual perteneció a don Juan de Noguera. Las construcciones de esa época como restos de la capilla y parte de una enorme chimenea, contrastan admirablemente con las nuevas y con las antiguas que fueron remodeladas por el célebre artista colimense Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo para darle vida al centro cultural y museo que adquirió en 1898 hasta 1996 que posteriormente paso a ser propiedad de la Universidad de Colima, donde se establecio el Centro de Estudios Antropológicos del Occidente y de Investigaciones del Diseño, Arquitectura y Estética. 42 pg. 40 interesting features. The furniture, designed by Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo himself, is worth a mention, and his works are displayed throughout. The museum is divided into 4 wings; in the first we find personal works, with unique furniture, paintings and drawings, with special emphasis on religious art with depictions of angels and shepherds. En wings 2 and 3 we find an impressive collection of Prehispanic art mostly made by regional craftsmen. Within this historically significant display, some of the more important cases contain warriors, elders, individuals with physical deformities, women with amphorae, and in one of the main cases entitled “The Zoo”, a collection of local animals including of course, the potbellied dog, a symbol of the Western Cultures of Mexico. In the posterior of the hacienda we find a large ecological reserve, including an eco-botanical garden with specimens of babmoo and many other decorational and medicinal plants, maintained and cared for with compost. The gardens are also home to a great diversity of local fauna including birds, iguanas, squirrels, raccoons, the ixtcuincle dogs and more. A nearby river can be spied from the lookout point at the very end of the hacienda where we also find two old fashioned bathrooms.

Destacan, dentro de esta distribución museográfica las vitrinas en las que se muestran guerreros, ancianos, individuos con deformidades físicas, mujeres con cantaros, y principalmente la vitrina titulada “El Zoológico” en la que se muestra una amplia variedad de animales de la región, sin faltar, por supuesto, los Perros Cebados, símbolo de las Culturas del Occidente En la parte trasera existe una gran reserva ecológica en la cual puede encontrar un jardín eco- botánico, además de bambú y muchas otras plantas de decoración y medicinales que son cuidadas y abonadas con composta (abono hecho de desechos órganicos), diversidad de fauna como aves, iguanas, ardillas, mapaches, perros ixtcuincles, etc. Más al fondo, un río pasa cerca de la propiedad el cual se puede ver desde un mirador que se encuentra en la parte trasera de la hacienda donde aún queda la dulce esencia del pasado.

Cascading waters flow between a high-walled grotto into a magical landscape of green. El Centinela—Separated by a steep sandbar, the crashing ocean meets the serene Centinela lagoon system that starts north of the airport and runs to Barra de Navidad. Kayakers and campers spot many bird species and the cold crocodile.

El Salto—Rodeada de una exuberante jungla, la cascada de 20 metros es un afluente del Río Minatitlán que está a 45 minutos de Manzanillo por el camino a Minatitlán. Cascadas de agua fluyen de una gruta de altas paredes hacia un mágico paisaje verde. El Centinela—Separado por una barra de arena, el océano se une con la laguna El Centinela que empieza al norte del aeropuerto y sigue hasta Barra de Navidad. Los kayakeros y exploradores pueden ver muchas especies de aves y extraños cocodrilos.
