Aves de la Costalegre...
is perhaps the easiest, least expensive and most rewarding way to get in touch with the natural world. All you need is a pair of binoculars and a guide book. Observing birds requires patience, intellect, and light excercise which open a sensory gateway to beauty and a path to knowledge of Mother Nature. The Costalegre is a Mecca for beginning and seasoned birders alike. With 270 different species, 22 of which are endemic, there is no shortage of avifauna to observe, and although some birds can be hard to see, they’re generally the most observable creatures out there. Early October to May are some of the best months to observe neo-tropical migratory birds that fly south from the U.S. and Canada for the winter. Here is a collection of several birds, both resident and migratory, that can be seen along the Costalegre:

Tricolored Heron / Garza Tricolor (Egreta tricolor) Mainly a coastal resident water bird, the Tri-colored Heron enjoys brackish and freshwater marshes where it hunts, either alone or in loose groups, by chasing its prey or slyly wading after it in water up to its belly. Its nests are found low in bushes, or even on the ground starting in July. This particular one is seen in its breeding plumage during which its bill turns blue, its neck yellowish, and it developes a slight crest on its head.

Es principalmente un ave acuática que reside en las costas, esta ave disfruta de las aguas de las marismas donde se provee de alimento ya sea sola o en grupos dispersos, sigue a sus presas vadeando en aguas que le llegan al vientre. Anida a principios de Julio en arbustos cerca del suelo e incluso en el suelo mismo. Requiere de mucha paciencia, inteligencia y un poco de ejercicio, pero lo volverá sensible a la belleza y al conocimiento de la naturaleza. Con 270 diferentes especies de aves, 22 de las cuales son endémicas, hay mucha fauna por observar, y aunque se dificulte ver a algunas aves, por lo general son las creaturas más observadas que hay. Desde principios de Octubre hasta Mayo se pueden ver las aves migrantes que vienen desde los Estados Unidos y Canadá a pasar el invierno, aunque todo el año se pueden observar diferentes especies de aves locales. Entre las especies más conocidas de la región y migratorias de la Costalegre se encuentran:
17 Western Grebe / Archichilique Piquiamarillo (Aechmophorus occidentalis) This species can be found in Canada and south to western Mexico. Its habitat is fresh-water lakes and lagoons. It has been found between 750 and 2500 meters of elevation. This Western Grebe a gray, feathered body. Its beak is long and pointy. It is of a good size, large for its family type, weighing up to 1.5 kg and is from 55 to 72 cm long. This bird is very similar to the Clark Achichilique but it is easy to distinguish them. The Western Achichilique has lighter colored feathers while its relative has feathers around light-colored eyes. The one seen here has an opaque, olive-yellow beak while the Clark Achichilique has an intense yellow beak.
Lo encontramos desde el Canadá hasta el occidente de México. Habita en los lagos y lagunas de agua dulce. Se le documenta de los 750 a 2500 metros de elevación. Este Achichilique tiene le plumaje del cuerpo gris. El pico es largo y puntiagudo. Es de buen tamaño, grande en su familia, con un peso de unos 1.5 kg y una longitud de 55 a 72 cm. Esta ave es muy similar al Achichilique de Clark, pero se pueden diferenciar fácilmente. El Achichilique Occidental tiene el plumaje de la cara oscuro, mientras que su pariente tiene las plumas alrededor de los ojos claras. Pardela Gris / Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus) The Sooty Shearwater is the most widely dispersed of all the members of its family species. It can be found all over the world except typically the furthest reaches of the earth, the Atlantic ocean, the Pacific and the north of the Indian Ocean. It avoids the frigid waters of the Arctic and Antarctic. Its population is numerous numbering in the dozens of millions. This Sooty Shearwater can reach 51 cm in length. Its wingspan can reach 109 cm.
La Pardela Sombría tiene la distribución más extensa entre todos los miembros de su familia.Tiene una ubicación global excepto por el centro, áreas más lejanas de tierra, del océano Atlántico, del Pacífico, y al norte del océano Índico.También se ausenta de las aguas congeladas del Ártico y Antártico. Northern Jacana / Jacana Mesoamericana (Jacana s. spinosa) The Northern Jacana can be found in estuaries and slow-moving rivers. They like fresh water areas with much underwater vegetation. Their weight is distributed. They have excellent balance, thanks to their large toes. They are able to walk on top of fragile plants floating as if they were on solid ground. These Jacanas are of the Jacanidae family. This is one of the families that is of the Charadriformes order. This gull family also belongs to this order therefore Jacanas are related to gulls.
A los gallitos de agua los encontramos en los esteros y ríos de poca corriente. Por lo general en agua dulce de mucha vegetación acuática. Estas aves logran distribuir el peso, al igual que tener un excelente balance, gracias a los largos dedos. Logran caminar sobre las frágiles plantas flotantes como si fuera el suelo sólido. Los gallitos de agua, jacanas o gallitos de pantanos como ciertos autores les llaman, se agrupan en la familia Jacanidae. Esta es una de las familias que se le asignan al Orden Charadriformes. La familia de las gaviotas y gaviotines también se asigna a este Orden, se le estiman estar emparentados.

Brown Booby / Bobo Vientre-blanco (Sula leucogaster) Blue-footed Booby / Bobo Patiazul (Sula n. nebouxii) Their name derives from the fact that they were rarely in human presence, out on their deserted islands, but make no mistake. These birds are not stupid. The species has evolved in desolate island environments with no predators, minimizing, thanks to their survival instinct, the need to stay alter in case of the appearance of a possible hunter or predator. In the parts, four species of boobies can be found. Open sea oriented birds that are between 70 and 100 cm long have a white, black and brown plumage, contrasting with the bright colors on their feet and face. The most common of the family is the Blue-Footed Booby and the Brown Booby.

Este nombre derivó del hecho de su escasa experiencia ante la presencia humana dentro de sus apartadas islas, pero no hay que confundirse, no son pájaros estúpidos, se trata de una especie que evolucionó dentro de ambientes isleños desprovistos de depredadores, minimizando dentro de su instinto de conservación la necesidad de mantenerse en alerta por la ocurrencia de un potencial cazador. En estos rumbos pueden incidir cuatro especies de bobos (boobies), aves marinas pelágicas (es decir, que viven en mar abierto) que miden entre 70 y 100 centímetros de largo, tienen un marcado patrón de plumaje en blanco, café y negro, que contrasta con los brillantes colores de las patas y la cara. De estas especies son comunes el bobo pata azul (Sula nebouxii, blue-footed booby) y el bobo café o patas amarillas (Sula leucogaster, brown booby).
American Avocet / Avoceta Americana (Recurvirostra americana) The American Avocet is a winter visitor shore bird. It can generally be found in estuaries, lagoons, marshes, etc... It feeds by sweeping a slightly upcurved bill from side to side in shallow water. It is quite sociable with ogher shorebirds, specially the resident Black-necked Stilts. During the nesting period, avocets are aggressive toward intruders.They engage in distraction ploys one after another until they drive the interloper away.These displays include loud cries of displeasure, a “crippled bird” act, a “begging for pity” act and even a spectacular anti-predator “dive bomb” display where the bird will swoop down on the predator and narrowly miss it.
La Avoceta Americana es un pájaro de invierno visitante de la costa. Puede ser encontrado generalmente en estuarios, lagunas, pantanos, etc… Se alimenta barriendo su levemente recurvado pico de lado al lado en el agua superficial. Mottled Owl / Búho Café (Strix virgata) The Mottled Owl can be found from Northern Mexico well down into Brazil and Argentina in South America. The Mottled Owl is midsize, 13 - 15 inches in length (about the size of a Sharp-shinned Hawk), and strictly nocturnal. It has a varied diet consisting of large insects and beetles, small mammals and birds, snakes, lizards, salamanders and frogs. It may be attracted to artificial lights and is considered an opportunistic feeder. It mostly hunts from a perch, often along a forest edge. The Mottled Owl usually lays 1 to 2 eggs between February and May. It generally nests in a hole in a tree or in the top of a broken off palm and sometimes even in vacant nests of other birds. It is resident (other than juvenile dispersals) and not believed to make any migratory movements.
El Búho Café puede ser encontrado desde el norte de México hasta Brasil y Argentina en Sudamérica. Es de tamaño mediano, de 33 a 38 cm de longitud y es estrictamente nocturno. Tiene una dieta variada que consiste en insectos grandes y pequeños, mamíferos diminutos y aves, culebras, salamandras y ranas. Puede ser atraído por luces artificiales y es considerado un comedor oportunista. Por lo general caza desde su rama, a lo largo de los límites del bosque. El Búho Café produce de 1 a 2 huevos entre Febrero y Mayo. Hace su nido en el hoyo de un árbol o en la punta de una palmera rota, y algunas veces en nidos vacíos de otras aves. Es sedentario, y no se le considera candidato de movimientos migratorios.
19 Ringed Kingfisher / Martin-pescador Collarejo (Ceryle t. torquata) This resident kingfisher can be seen along rivers, lakes, and marshes where, as its name suggests, it hovers over the water before diving for small fish. It is often mistaken with the migratory Belted Kingfisher, but can best differentiated by its larger size and completely rufous belly. Always looking out from a high point along a waterway like a branch overhanging a river or from telephone or high tension wires along watercourses, it can hover and will dive from a great height (10 m) into the water , wings along the body, to catch a fish. Then it flies back to its vantage point to swallow the fish headdown.

Black-throated Magpie-Jay / Urraca-hermosa Carinegra (Calocitta colliei) A magnificent bluish jay with an extremely long tail, a long, pointed, black crest, and white underparts.There are two very different types (black-throated and whitethroated) which were formerly regarded as different species. Deciduous open woodlands and arid scrub forests on the Pacific side of Central America. Lowland species which rarely venture above 4,000 feet. The long nesting season extends from November to July.They are social nesters, building untidy, bulky nests of twigs lined with mosses, lichens, and roots.The nest is placed in a thorny tree, sometimes 100 feet high. During the mating season, these jays have surprisingly sweet gurgling vocalizations as well as a variety of harsh calls more commonly heard. After nest building is finished, the female will lay 3-4 eggs flecked with brown.
Es la urraca más grande del continente americano debido a su larga cola y su negro penacho. Se conocen dos especies: La de cara blanca y la de cara negra. La especie se distribuye por la costa del Pacífico hasta Costa Rica y rara vez se atreven a volar hasta 4000 pies de altura. Desde noviembre hasta julio se dedican a construir nidos comunitarios con raíces, ramas, musgos y líquenes, sobre árboles espinosos de hasta 39 m de alto. Durante la temporada de apareamiento producen sorprendentemente dulces vocalizaciones y otros gritos secos y fuertes. Al terminar el nido, las hembras ponen de 3 a 4 huevos con puntos café.
This prehistoric-looking resident heron is the most strictly nocturnal of the night herons. On rainy days you can see them fishing or hunting small animals (crabs, frogs), not only in the marshes in the coastal region but also along creeks farther from the coast. They can make a sound by snapping with their bill and at night they sometimes give their presence away with their call. It lives in mangroves, freshwater marshes, and in riverside trees where it nests. Because it roosts in denser areas than other night herons, it is often easily overlooked. But it can be easily identified by its voluminous quack-like call.
Esta especie de garza local de aspecto prehistórico es la más nocturna de las garzas. En los días de lluvia puedes verlos pescando o cazando pequeños animales como cangrejos y ranas no sólo en los pantanos, también en la región costera y riachuelos más allá de la costa. Pueden emitir un sonido chasqueando su pico y a veces por la noche mencionan su presencia con su llamado.Vive en manglares, marismas de agua dulce y en los árboles o la orilla de los ríos donde también hace sus nidos. Mingo, an elderly, patient man explained the process to us. Fertilizer is made from organic waste, grass, cow dung and the key ingredient: worms that, ironically, clean the fertilizer. Approximately 3 tons are produced in 3 months. Following along the road, we arrived at Natura Camp. Upon arrival we were strapped into our harnesses and given a brief explanation by the instructors as to what we needed to do and needed to know on our adventure. We started up a steep hill, hiking to reach the first platform where we would leap off to swing over the forest on the first of three canopy tour stages. Beginning our ascent, we came to a suspension bridge where we admired the beautiful scenery bathed in sunlight. As we came to the edge and pg. 28

Una vez ahí, nos colocamos los arneses y después de una breve explicación de los instructores, nos encaminamos cuesta arriba para iniciar nuestro paseo en tirolesa. Tuvimos que cruzar el puente y llegar a la siguiente parada. Caídas, sacudidas, nervios, gritos locos, y poco después, cordura y equilibrio. Alcanzamos un alto obligatorio para recuperar el aliento. Seguimos ascendiendo y, después de 2 altos más, llegamos al primer punto de desplazamiento. Un tramo de 500 metros de largo a 70 metros de altura. 28 pg. 24 looked down into the void we would cross, we made a decision: now or never! We had to cross the bridge to proceed to the first platform. After numerous falls, spills, bouts of nerves, the occasional loud cry, a little later on, a calm equilibrium settled in. At a few points along the climb, we were asked to stop and recover our breath. We continued on up after our stops and arrived at the first take-off point where we would leap over the abyss on a 500 meter-long cable over a 70-meter drop. After seeing Eduardo and Max take off Superman-style, face down, and seeing them make it look so easy, we grew more and more exited. We had to be careful not to look down, though, or lose our nerve. The first question we had is how much weight the cable can support. Once Adan explained to us that the cables and nets support hundreds of kilos, we didn’t know whether to feel grateful or offended. Alex quietly took the leap and quickly arrived at the other side of the precipice. I went next. I screamed and shouted but the wind came pg. 30

30 pg. 28 along and slapped me across the face as if to say: quiet, enjoy the ride...I did it and it was stupendous. Gina and Estrella also shouted at the top of their lungs. Gina’s hat flew off along the way, drifting slowly into the gaping space below, leaving her mark at Natura Camp. I think the echoes of their shouts can still be heard. Ericka and Nena crossed quickly and easily. The whole experience was incredible. But, guess what? We still had two more stages to go, the second and fastest of the three a 250-meter length crossing at 40 meters height and another, the same length, 30 meters off the ground. A word of advice: listen to what your instructors tell you during orientation and, even though it seems daunting, brake with your heel first and not your toe. The experience was unforgettable. We woudl definitely go back and enjoy the other activities the camp has to offer such as rappelling, the climbing tower, the temascal, camping and the obstacle course (with handlebars, a balancing bar and various other commando challenges. It was a perfect day to end with home oven-baked pizzas in a beautiful setting that we can hardly believe is so close to Manzanillo and so easily reached.

Gina y Estrella definitivamente gritaron a todo pulmón y sin que Gina viera, su gorra cayó suavemente por el precipicio, dejando parte de su esencia entre la naturaleza. Creemos que todavía se escucha el eco de los gritos de ambas. Ericka y Nena cruzaron tranquilamente. Fue increíble, pero ¿qué creen? Nos faltaban dos desplazamientos más: el segundo y el más rápido de los tres, 250 m de largo a 40 m de altura y otro de igual longitud a 30 m de altura. Un consejo: escuchen a los instructores y por más abrumador que esté la vista, frenen con talón y nunca con punta. Fue una experiencia que todos volveremos a repetir y disfrutar otras actividades como rappel, torre de escalada, temazcal, camping y pista comando (carrera de obstáculos, pasamanos, barra de equilibrio). Un día perfecto para terminar con pizzas cocinadas al horno en medio de un entorno que no creíamos tener tan cerca.

Name: Luís Roberto Soberano Aldana Born in: Manzanillo Occupation: Reporter for the Guardian Angel program, public speaker, voice of the people. “I am the eyes and the voice for others.” What he likes most: “I love playing basketball, the black sand beaches behind the cross and going with my family to El Corazón at the Punta de Agua bridge. Passion: My work as well as my family and my children. I thank God for having brought me to this company. Roberto has worked in radio since he was 15 years old. He likes to have his finger on the pulse of the goings on in his community and to keep the public informed. People call
Roberto before calling the authorities. He has helped children from the Liborio Espinoza children’s home in Valle de las Garzas, taking them supplies that have been donated by sponsors, such as 30 pairs of shoes that were requested directly from Nike and that were handed out in November. He enjoys helping people and he dislikes lies. Helping people is his daily reward. His greatest achievement: On one occasion, there was a fire where the toll both to the airport was. The fire almost reached the high-tension wires. Roberto called the civil protection authorities and when the emergency crews arrived, they didn’t let people get through the toll booth quickly. They wanted to charge every car that went through! He contacted the Secretary of Communications and Transport and Silverio Cavazos, Colima’s governor. He received enormous support from both and the toll booth was removed.

Su mayor logro: En una ocasión hubo un incendio donde estaba la caseta de cobro hacia el aeropuerto, el fuego casi llegaba a las torres de alta tensión. Llame a protección civil y al llegar los servicios de emergencia no los dejaban pasar porque tenían que pagar!, así que contacte al secretario de la SCT y al Gobernador Silverio Cavazos de quienes recibí mucho apoyo y logre que quitaran esa caseta.

In my mind, I had pictured the entrance to the cave as a large opening in the side of the hill we’ve been climbing for the past half hour – something I could walk into – rather than a crevasse in the ground at my feet. I’ve come this far though so I take a deep breath, grab the rope hanging on my right and descend the wooden ladder into the depths below. To my pleasant surprise, as we descend into the cave, the small entranceway widens into a large chamber on three levels that is spacious and more than high enough to stand upright in. The lighting provided by a gas generator on the surface displays the many different shapes and colours of the stalactites hanging singly and in groups from the ceiling as well as other interesting rock formations pg. 56

Using the non-toll highway between Manzanillo and Armería it’s an easy drive or taxi ride south, about 11 km from downtown Manzanillo, to Las Juntas, where someone from the Hernández Cortez family will meet you and guide you to the Rancho and Ecosite.To find Las Juntas, follow the non-toll highway south of Manzanillo through Colomo.The turn off for Las Juntas is on the left between the PEMEX on the south side of Colomo and a bridge.

On a hill overlooking the property there is a palapa set up with a traditional wood-burning outdoor clay stove/griddle and rustic benches and tables. By prior arrangement, the family provides visitors with home-cooked meals that include wood-grilled fish from their fish pond or grilled beef with salsas and tortillas “hechas en mano” from pure ground corn instead of from corn flour. There are several trails leading through the woods from the rancho and while the trails have been left in a natural state the family has fashioned steps of logs and dirt and ropes to hang onto on the steepest parts. The climb up to the caves – only the one we explored is currently set up for visitors – is steep in places and takes about half an hour to forty-five minutes. There is a rest stop with rustic log benches about half way up. After exploring the cave, we climbed another 200 meters to a viewpoint on a cliff with a spectacular view of the now dry arroyo, valley and ocean far below our vantage point.
