Dave Collins Dave combines his passions in outdoor adventure and conservations wherever possible. After a stint as a professional whitewater kayaker, he finished an M.A. in English in 1999 and came to Mexico to teach humanities and ESL at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Colima. It didn’t take him long to discover the Costalegre and fall in love with it. In 2000 he started Immersion Adventures, an ecoturism company focused on sea kayaking, snorkeling, birding and ecology courses, based in La Manzanilla. Contracts included running the Earthwatch Institute’s Mexican Mangroves and Wildlife Program for four years. In 2005 he launched a recycling program in La Manzanilla which still continues today and has been officialy endorsed by the municipality of La Huerta. In 2007 he formed the nonprofit organization Tierralegre whose mission it is to protect the natural resources and biodiversity of the Costalegre. His most recent outdoor passion is stand up paddle surfing. Ten years later he’s come full circle to compete once again on a professional level.

Dave combina sus pasiones de aventura al aire libre y la conservación siempre que sea posible. Después de una temporada como kayakista profesional de aguas bravas, terminó una maestría en Inglés en 1999 y llegó a México para enseñar humanidades y ESL en el Tecnológico de Monterrey en Colima. No le llevó mucho tiempo descubrir la Costalegre y enamórese de ella. En el 2000 creó Immersion Adventures, una compañía de ecoturismo enfocada en kayak de mar, buceo, observación de aves y cursos de ecología, con sede en La Manzanilla. Los contratos incluyen la puesta en marcha del Instituto Mexicano de Vigilancia de los Manglares y el programa de Vida Silvestre por cuatro años. En 2005 se puso en marcha un programa de reciclaje en La Manzanilla, que todavía continúa y ha sido aprobado oficialmente por el municipio de La Huerta. En 2007 formó Tierralegre una organización sin fines de lucro cuya misión es proteger los recursos naturales y la biodiversidad de la Costalegre. Su pasión más reciente al aire libre es el surf con remo. Diez años más tarde el ha venido a competir una vez más a nivel profesional.

Evelio Culin 32 year old architect,  born in Manzanillo, Mexico. He studied at Facultad de Arquitectura, Universidad de Colima. Because of different circumstances (such as tuition and surf ) he has lived and traveled to many places; places where he learned about architecture and people. He became a father in the year 2000 when his son Keoni was born. Although he likes to travel,  his love for the place itself,  his family, friends and the ocean makes him always return back home to Manzanillo, the place where he works, and where he met surfing at the age of 11, and ever since has become his lifestyle as he continues to surf in the near beaches of Jalisco and Michoacán, with the same astonishment and expectations of what the sea and nature are, give and represent, just as the same very day he rode a board for the first time, 21 years ago... Por diversas circunstancias, tales como el surf y la arquitectura, ha vivido y viajado a distintos lugares, conociendo y aprendiendo acerca de ellos. winding two-lane highway flows like a ribbon from Puerto Vallarta down south towards Manzanillo through the heart of the Costalegre, or “happy coast”. Upscale private resort enclaves intermingle with once-forgotten fishing villages which have been discovered by nature and beach lovers and are now ideal destinations for people seeking sun, sand and solitude. Three main bays make up the Costalegre: Navidad, Tenacatita and Chamela. Just north of Manzanillo airport (ZLO), Barra de Navidad and Melaque are the bustling hubs of the Costalegre on opposite ends of the Bahia de Navidad, with markets, quaint cobblestone streets with storefronts selling handicrafts and knick knacks, and numerous beachside restaurants specializing in seafood. A fresh water lagoon flows behind the town, and surfers catch the perfect wave off the pier at the far end of town. Live music can be heard on the weekends resonating from several beach bars or in front of the Melaque town square. Found 40 min. north of the airport, La Manzanilla in Tenacatita Bay pg. 12

ingletrack mountain bike enthusiasts need not pass by the Costalegre in their search for fun, adventure, challenge and thrills. In addition to the many doubletrack routes that wind through this scenic area there are two challenging singletrack rides. Aguacatillo to Ranchito Beach offers cross country singletrack, open range riding through bunch grass and some serious downhill, switchback, singletrack that drops from about 1,200 feet to the beach. If you are a rider who likes the challenge of getting there as well as the thrill of the descent you can also ride rough doubletrack from highway 200 to the start of the trailhead as we did one morning in June. Arriving at Aguacatillo at 8:00 am Enrique, Isaac and Anna mounted the bikes for the 45 minute ride up to the trailhead. Though steep the dirt road levels off in places as it winds through the hills affording plenty of opportunity to rest one’s leg muscles from the hard climb. As one rides there is opportunity for bird and lizard watching in the thick jungle foliage as well as enjoying the stunning vistas towards Tamarindo and out to sea. Arriving at the trailhead we all walked up to the very summit of the hill to enjoy the spectacular view of Cuastecomates Bay and beyond that Bahia Navidad and the open ocean off of Playa de Coco. os entusiastas del ciclismo de sendero de montaña no necesitan pasar de largo de la Costa Alegre en su búsqueda de diversión, aventura, reto y emoción. Aparte de las diversas rutas de doble sendero que serpentean a través de este rumbo escénico, existen dos paseos retadores de sendero angosto. Aguacatillo a Playa Ranchito ofrece senderos angostos a campo traviesa, en terreno abierto de matorrales de pasto y una fuerte pendiente cuesta abajo, en forma de zigzag, que desciende desde 360 metros a la playa. Si eres un ciclista que gusta tanto del reto de llegar como de la emoción del descenso, también puedes montar la agreste carretera 200 de doble carril hasta donde empieza el sendero como hicimos una mañana en Junio. Llegando a Aguacatillo a las 8 de la mañana, Enrique, Isaac y Anna montaron las bicis para emprender el recorrido de 45 minutos cuesta arriba al inicio del sendero. Aunque empieza de forma empinada, el camino de terracería se nivela en partes al serpentear a través de las colinas, dando suficiente oportunidad de descanso a los músculos de las piernas de uno, después de la pesada subida. Al montar, hay oportunidad de observar a los pájaros y lagartijas en el denso follaje de la selva, así como de disfrutar de los panoramas sensacionales hacia Tamarindo y del mar. how to get here... / cómo llegar... The Aguacatillo to Ranchito ride is accessible from highway 200 at Aguacatillo. The La Paz to Los Engenios ride is accessible from a road off of highway 80 between La Paz and Lazaro Cardenas. On both rides there are several gates along the route and the local ranchers keep cattle in these parts so please if you venture out on your own be sure to leave the gates the way you find them. These routes are not marked and they run on private property so it is best to go with a guide who knows the route and has permission from the property owners to be there.

El recorrido de Aguacatillo a Ranchito se encuentra por la carretera 200 a Aguacatillo. El recorrido de La Paz a Ranchito se accesa desde un camino que sale de la carretera 80 entre La Paz y Lázaro Cárdenas. Sobre los dos recorridos, hay varias rejitas sobre las bardas que ponen los ganaderos por estas partes, así que, por favor, si te aventuras por tu parte a solas, asegúrate de dejar las rejas como las encontraste. Estas rutas no están marcadas y están sobre propiedad privada, por lo cual es mejor ir acompañado de un guía que conoce la ruta, mismo que ha recibido permiso de los dueños de la propiedad para estar ahí.

riders remounted the bikes and embarked on the rolling singletrack and open country ride that leads to the steep part of the trail. Arriving at the brink, and looking almost directly down onto Ranchito Beach, Anna decided that it was too steep for her abilities so she wisely decided to turn back with me. Enrique and Isaac – who’d done this ride before – took off along the trail for the downhill ride of their lives and made it to the beach unscathed and elated. From there they took another dirt road back to the highway where they arrived long before we did in the Jeep. The singletrack ride to Los Engenios Viejo on a route that runs through the hills from Barra de Navidad to La Manzanilla – while not affording the direct vertical drop of the Aguacatillo ride – is technically challenging pg. 24 pg. 20

even for experienced riders and best suited to those who don’t mind a bit of bushwhacking. This rocky, narrow singletrack that runs through dense underbrush is accessible only by first riding the course of a rocky arroyo that is often blocked by fallen tree trunks that one must climb and haul the bike over. This ride also involves some open country riding through bunchgrass. Unlike the Aguacatillo ride this route changes a bit after every rainy season and it is sometimes completely impassable until February when the undergrowth dies back or is cleared by cattle. Getting into the hills involves a steep climb along a rough dirt road pg. 22

that passes through spectacular dense jungle with enormous trees. The journey ends with a descent from about 800 feet to sea level on another rough doubletrack. Then, it is a short ride on the flat to the beach at La Manzanilla or Boca de Iguanas. There, those who have not had enough adventure for the day can boogie board and those that have had enough adventure can relax with a cold beverage and cool off with a swim. One fellow who did this ride wasn’t ready to stop when they got to Boca de Iguanas so he and Enrique rode on, all the way to Tenacatita on the back roads, but he is the only one who’s ever been that energetic.

s I finally scramble out of the surf zone I´m reminded of how impractical it is to paddle a loaded SUP. I´ve had to go back to shore once already to repack my load—shifted by the hammering surf. I wave to Elysia to paddle toward me. At first petrified by the waves, she dug deep and made it out of the surf zone before me. She´s still a bit wide-eyed, but maintains balance and equanimity in the mild noon chop. This is her first SUP expedition, and my second. Our shuttle driver is nowhere to be seen now. We are alone on the open ocean of the “Costalegre”, the southern coast of the state of Jalisco from Barra de Navidad north to the southern tip of Banderas Bay where Puerto Vallarta is located. I sense that this realization is still sinking in for Elysia, as I sense that my loaded board is sinking deeper into the water unless I paddle—which is what we begin pg. 30 to do in earnest.

Ya había tenido que regresar a la orilla una vez con anterioridad para reempacar mi carga que se había desbalanceado por el golpeteo de la marea. Saludo a Elysia, pidiendo que reme hacia mí. Al principio estuvo petrificada por las olas, pero remó profundamente y salió de la zona de la marea antes que yo. Only five minutes into establishing a rhythm we sight humpback whales about 100 meters offshore. In a magical instant two of them breach simultaneously about 60 feet out of the water, exposing some two-thirds of their cetacean mass. Awestruck and humbled, I wonder if the expedition might all be anticlimactic from here…? In any case, I take it as a most convincing sign of an outstanding trip to come. As Elysia and I look at each other there is a sense that the scene is a metaphor for our union on this long-awaited journey. “Wow,” is about the only word we can conjure. The whales cruise south with us for a while longer and then disappear. A headwind picks up and the paddling becomes even slower, especially for me as I am carrying at least three times the weight of Elysia and weigh twice as much as she. My mind is drifting and I´m beginning to fall under the awkward load and increased chop, while she is flying ahead featherlike and laughing. At me perhaps, but her laugh and lightness are inspiring nonetheless. With renewed concentration I try to drive

thoughts of the outer-world from my mind and drive my board forward. There is no better moving meditation than this sport and the need to focus is magnified by the load. With every new stroke thoughts of the economic recession are replaced with concentration on balance, strokes, foot placement and then flashes of the Snickers bar in my camelback. After two hours of hard paddling we sit on the boards to eat lunch, until I realize that we are drifting north, away from our destination, at a disheartening rate. There will be no opportunity for lunch on the boards today, and landing on the open ocean is not a viable option either considering the size of the surf and our already slow progress. We throttle down our Snickers and get paddling once more, but from here on out, due to our, and the ocean´s, conditions, we switch between sitting or kneeling on the boards and paddling standing up. Some two to three hours later we come upon the aptly named Punta Soledad (Solitude Point). A reddish volcanic sea stack capped by agave and Prickly Pear cactus, framed by scrub pg. 32

Sólo cinco minutos después de haber vuelto a establecer el ritmo, vemos ballenas jorobadas como a 100 metros de la orilla de la costa. En un instante mágico, dos de ellas emergen simultáneamente como 18 metros fuera del agua, exponiendo casi dos terceras partes de su masa cetácea. Impactado y humillado, me pregunto si la expedición será anti-climáctico a partir de ahora… En cualquier caso, lo tomo como signo más convincente de un sobresaliente viaje por venir. Tanto Elysia y yo nos miramos uno al otro con la sensación de que esta escena es una metáfora de nuestra unión en este largamente esperado viaje. “Guau,” es la única palabra que podemos conjurar. Las ballenas navegan al sur con nosotros por un rato más y luego desaparecen. Un viento contrario se levanta, haciendo nuestro remar aún más lento, especialmente para mí que llevo por lo menos tres veces más peso que Elysia y peso el doble que ella. Tras dos horas de haber estado remando fuertemente, comemos el almuerzo sentado en los deslizadores, hasta que me doy cuenta que nos hemos desviado hacia el norte de nuestro destino, a un paso desanimante. No habrá oportunidad de almorzar sobre nuestros deslizadores hoy, y permanecer a la deriva en el océano abierto tampoco es una opción viable, considerando el tamaño de la oleada y nuestro lento progresar. Enguímos nuestros Snickers y continuamos remando una vez más, pero de aquí en adelante, debido a nuestra condición y las condiciones del océano, cambiamos de estar sentados o arrodillados sobre el deslizador y remamos parados. Dos o tres horas más tarde llegamos al atinado nombre de Punta Soledad. Una enrojecida chimenea volcánica de mar, cubierta por agave y nopales con tunas, enmarcada por unos matorrales bajos y una implacable marea, sobresale como una señal de exclamación, marcando el final con la frase, “¡Tu estás solo ahora!” Inicialmente nosotros decidimos remar alrededor de ella para buscar un lugar para acampar, pero de repente me pegó, en un fugaz momento de claridad, que eso no era una idea sabia. pg. 30 forest and unrelenting surf, juts out like an exclamation mark ending the phrase, “You are alone now!” Initially we decide to paddle around it and look for camp, but this strikes me, in a fleeting moment of clarity, as not a very wise idea. The sun is going down and we are completely exhausted. Not only should one plan on going about half as fast as a sea kayak on a loaded SUP, one should also count on getting twice as tired. I suggest we backtrack a bit and grab a protected cove for the night and Elysia agrees. The first thing we do upon beaching our boards is rip open the dry bag that with yesterday´s leftover pizza in it. Between mouthfuls we smile, laugh and comment on the bounty and beauty of this beach, which I later discover is named Las Cuatas, or “female companions.” I´m not female, but I soon switch into my pareo, or beach skirt, the ideal after paddling wear in a tropical climate, and the name seems fitting. Dusk is upon us as we hike up to get a view of the surroundings, the sunset, and the moonrise—the brightest full moon of the year due to the phenomenon of perigree. Along the pg. 34

way we spot a fleeting Orange-breasted Bunting, one of the 22 endemic birds found in the Jaliscan Dry Forest, and a group of snorting, scurrying White-nosed Coati, a carnivorous raccoon-like mammal common to the region. At the top we are so enveloped in the sunset that we don´t notice the moonrise until we turn around to walk back down. Once again, as with the rising humpbacks, we are stunned beyond words—this time though, my imagination, far from thoughts of anticlimactic occurrences, now explodes with thoughts of infinite possibilities. The door opens to these on day three, our final day, when we find some secret surf. This is when the slower and more exhausting travel of SUP- expeditioning gets paid off in waves. The payoff is abundant this particular day: overhead faces smile in consistent sets, greeted by an offshore breeze. Elysia bows out gracefully and sets up the camera gear. I am unduly impressed with her performance on her first SUP expedition and grateful for her company. I know it won´t be too long before she´ll be joining me not only to enter and exit the surf zone, but to play madly in it…

The SUP Expedition Set-Up I am testing different gear than that from my first SUP expedition around Cape Scott last July(http://wernerpaddlesblog.com/blog/stand_ up_paddle_trips_and_destinations/index.html, or http://www.kenalu.com/2008/08/) and wearing a lot less gear thanks to the climate. I am using two of Werner´s (www.wernerpaddles.com) new paddles, the Advantage and the Carve. The Advantage is Werner´s new touring/racing SUP blade, and the Carve is their new specialized surfing paddle. Compared to all other SUP paddles I´ve tried, Werner is dominating the industry hands down. All those years of R&D in the paddle industry have transferred directly into their SUP line, offering superior quality, diversity and durability. To start, the ABS Palm-style grip on both the

paddles just feels right. And ergonomically it makes all the difference for stroke control while also lending to less strain on the wrist and hand joints at the end of the day. The attention to detail—just the right width, thickness, and angle of the grip—make all the difference, especially after taking some 10,000 strokes. Also, although I´m still quite fond of my Werner Spanker, I find the tear drop blade design on the Advantage and Carve more sophisticated and fluid. First of all, the surface area of the blade is now more elongated throughout and not as wide at the bottom of the blade. This reduces torque and makes for faster cadence, especially faster on the smaller Carve blade, which is ideal for making short, rapid strokes where they count—up front—when you need to build hull speed instantly to drop

And there is more scoop in both power faces of the blades which means more water catchment, and ultimately more efficiency. The versatility of the adjustable shaft makes it possible for me to fit Elysia with a properly-sized paddle as well. Finally, the durability of these paddles under the extra stress of paddling a loaded board is unmatched, an especially crucial detail on an expedition. Regarding boards, I am now paddling an 11foot ULI inflatable board (www.uliboards.com), and Elysia is paddling a 10-foot Infinity (www. surftech.com). I´ve mentioned that one should plan on going half as fast on an SUP expedition

versus a sea kayak one, but that is a very rough equation and has much to with conditions—e.g., headwinds versus tailwinds. An experienced SUP paddler has potential advantage in a tailwind, but any SUP paddler has an extreme disadvantage in a headwind. Speed is also relative to what length and width of board one is paddling. ULI has now come out with a 15foot board, which I imagine would cruise along much faster than the 11-footer. However, what one gains in speed by using a longer board, one will lose in performance in the surf zone, so it all depends on one´s preferences. On this particular trip my preference is catching waves at otherwise inaccessible spots, not on making faster time or longer distance. The ULI board is proving quite worthy, pg. 38

The first day I had the load packed too far toward the front of the board, and I have now moved it a bit further back which cures the problem. Also, my previous method of gluing E-Z plugs to the board and using nylon cord to strap down the load is not working as well either because the plugs do not adhere to the inflatable board material as well as they do to an epoxy board (at least with the glue I am using, which is a marine epoxy). The method I´ve switched to is simply using two cam straps and wrapping them completely around the load and the board. There may be a little drag on the hull, but I consider it miniscule, and far outweighed by the newly achieved security of the load to the board. I flip in the surf again on my take-off, but no going back to shore to re-pack this time—the load holds steadfast to the board. There is also the issue of increased board flex using an inflatable board versus an epoxy one, which tends to make paddling a loaded SUP slightly more unstable and slower. But again I find that the positives of the ULI board far outweigh the negatives for SUP expeditioning. I can travel anywhere in the world with this set-up without paying outrageous airline fares and worrying about the board getting damaged along the way. And finally, I don´t have to sweat dinging or breaking a board on an expedition, where the consequences matter more.

En este viaje en particular mi preferencia es alcanzar olas en puntos normalmente inaccesibles, no en hacer menos tiempo o más distancia a lo largo del recorrido. Una vez que me dí cuenta de cómo balancear y asegurar la carga, la tabla ULI ha probado ser de gran valor. El primer día puse la carga demasiado cerca del frente de la tabla, y ahora que la he movido un poco más hacia atrás, se ha resuelto el problema. Así también, mi método previo de pegar E-Z plugs a la tabla y de usar cuerda de nylon para sujetar la carga por debajo no funcionó tan bien porque los plugs no se adhieren al material inflable de la tabla como lo hacen a las tablas de epoxi (por lo menos con el pegamento que usé, el cual es un epoxi marítimo). Pero nuevamente encuentro lo positivo de las tablas ULI cuyas ventajas exceden los puntos negativos para una expedición en SUP. Puedo viajar a cualquier parte del mundo con este equipo sin tener que pagar exageradas tarifas aéreas además de la preocupación de que la tabla puede dañarse durante el recorrido. Y finalmente, no tengo que preocuparme de golpear o de romper la tabla en una expedición, donde importan más las consecuencias.

An extremely diverse ecosystem under pressure Globally there is little good news for the state of our environment. The Jalisco dry forest eco-region is no exception. Tropical dry forest is the most threatened tropical ecosystem on earth. And among this type of ecosystem the Jalisco dry forest, encompassing 16,218 square miles, is the most biodiverse in the world. It hosts 1,100 species of mammals, 270 of birds, and 1,700 of reptiles and amphibians, and contains the highest rate of endemic species—84 animals and 110 plants found only in Mexico. This forest is largely coastal, containing the section referred to as the “Costalegre”. The area has been identified by Conservation International as falling into the Mesoamerican “Biodiversity Hotspot”, one of 34 in the world, and by World Wildlife Fund as one of the 200 global areas in most critical need of conservation. These areas are selected for being the richest, rarest, and most endangered freshwater, marine, and terrestrial reservoirs of biota left on earth. The Costalegre is undergoing an unprecedented environmental crisis due to unsustainable and unregulated development, tourism, agriculture, fishing, deforestation, contamination and poaching. In collaboration with the University of Guadalajara´s Center for the Sustainable Development of Coastal Zones, I formed the nonprofit organization Tierralegre (www.tierralegre. org) two years ago. Its mission is to protect the biodiversity and natural resources of Mexico´s Costalegre. As I paddle this coastline I never take for granted that it is one of the least spoiled, most beautiful places on earth—for now.

Melaque and Barra de Navidad, twin towns on either side of an arching bay, are havens for sun-seekers, artists, and people looking to do a lot of one thing: nothing. Every winter in Melaque, the tiny town that sits to the north of the wide bay, it becomes quietly full of low-key, beachcombing vacationers. Time stands still, and even turns several years back. There isn’t much to do other than wander leisurely along the edge of the pounding surf, eat lots of seafood, and watch as generations of fishermen ply their trade in the frothing waves. Barra de Navidad, the site of the expansive Grand Bay five-star hotel complex and 18-hole golf course, is renowned for its clean point break that curls in off the south end of the bay. Here, surfers ply their trade, coaxing their boards along the edge of medium sized waves, while art lovers comb through the numerous shops filled with local crafts and handiwork.

tenacatita bay colored rocks... Tenacatita, which means “colored rocks”, lies approximately 9 kilometers from the highway, and was so named because of a ridge of reddish rock rising out of the south end of the bay. Locals say centuries ago, the Aztecs who populated this sunny bay used pieces of the fiery stone in building their homes. Today, the fine golden sand and gentle surf form an ideal setting for relaxed family fun. Several modest beachside palapa restaurants serving fresh seafood and plenty of cold beer and coconuts dot the north end of the bay where the waters are so clean and aquamarine you can see right down to the bottom. A group of jagged, weatherbeaten rocks rise out of the sea, forming a natural habitat for an amazing array of sea creatures.

The Costa Careyes is a flower-covered series of undulating cliffs between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, interspersed with hidden beaches and exclusive hotels. Known among a polo-playing, jet-set crowd of Europeans who own impressive holiday mansions, the area is also one of the prettiest and most scenic along the Pacific Coast. Gian Franco Brignone, an italian who made his fortune in oil, discovered the coast during the mid-‘60s and imagined merging European sensibilities with the natural vibrancy of Mexico. hen visitors see Manzanillo by air, they can’t help but become entranced by mystical whitewashed buildings and towers built by famed Mexican architect Jose Luis Ezquerra in the 1970s, that have since become synonymous with an otherwise ordinary Mexican beach town. Back then, these architectural masterpieces shaped the face of Manzanillo, sharing distinct flavors that evoke images of ancient Moorish cliff top cities, the Greek Isles, or even the exotic Middle Eastern feel of Arabian Nights. But the way in which this unique style mixture made its way to Mexico’s Pacific Coast is a fairy tale in and of itpg. 66 self.

Centuries before architect Ezquerra was commissioned by Bolivian tin magnate Antenor Patino to build Las Hadas Resort, Spanish conquerors had made contact with indigenous tribes in Mexico. In those days, Spain had fingers that reached to the furthest corners of the world, from the heart of Africa to Asia and beyond. As defeated countries fell and conquered peoples were absorbed into the vast Spanish empire, fleets were dispersed around the world with tradesmen, monks, sailors and masons who were recently converted Christians, and many of whom had roots in Asian, Muslim and even Gothic traditions. “Spanish conquerors brought spirituality from Islam to Mexico,” says Ezquerra, noting that from San Blas in the state of Nayarit, to Acapulco along Guerrero state’s coast – anywhere Spanish galleons were present – the pg. 68 fusion of international world pg. 65

cultures is apparent. “Mexico’s Pacific coast in particular has influences from the Philippines and Asia that have nothing to do with the Yucatan, Campeche and [colonial cities such as] Guanajuato,” Ezquerra says. Ezquerra refers to the colonial town of Comala at the foot of Colima City’s twin volcanoes – El Pueblo Blanco de America – as further evidence of Asian, Islamic and Mediterranean influences that infiltrated the design aesthetic of Mexico’s Pacific Coast during the Spanish colonial era. Ezquerra considers himself to be a balance of opposites, influenced by orderly Western culture from his Basque roots and birth in Northern Spain, and warmer, Mediterranean or Eastern philosophies of the country’s south in Cordoba, where his family fled after the civil war. “I love the south but I am a man of the north,” he explains. He moved to Mexico and studied architecture at the UNAM in Mexico City in 1953, and learned pg. 74 pg. 66

to question the existing Bauhaus design movement, eventually building his own philosophical theory of architecture that he called, “lejanista.” Lejanismo is an interpretation of architectural and historical factors that incorporates ancient and simplistic forms of architecture presented in a modern context. The style also references universal elements such as the sun, moon, water and air, and reflects expressions of contrasting Western and Eastern cultures, emotions and moods in harmony with the natural surroundings. The ideal chance to put his theories into practice was presented to Ezquerra in the 1964, when he was hired to construct a resort for Patino, who had acquired a choice piece of land on Manzanillo’s then largely undeveloped Santiago Peninsula. He had found the perfect canvas to interpret his own upbringing while reflecting upon the unique historical ethnicity of Mexico’s Pacific coastline. “For me, Las Hadas is more Mexican than a ranch in San Miguel de Allende,” explains Ezquerra, of the union between natural tropical elements and dramatic play of light and shadows off the lowrise, whitewashed buildings that are interconnected by meandering pathways and hidden plazas. “Mexico is multicultural not just Spanish colonial.” Many design enthusiasts consider Las Hadas, which Ezquerra completed in 1974, with changing the face of international resort architecture by breaking the common mould of high-rise towers centered around public dining and entertainment areas. The mark left by Las Hadas upon the visual landscape of Manzanillo forever changed the once tiny port town. The municipal government of Manzanillo in 2001 commissioned him to redesign the downtown core into a more traditionally colonial style, then create a walkable pier located at Miramar beach on Santiago Bay in 2002. In 2003, Ezquerra designed the master plan for the expansion of the port into the lagoon, and in 2004, the master plan for private housing development Cascadas de Manzanillo. La marca que deja Las Hadas sobre el paisaje visual de Manzanillo cambió para siempre el que una vez fuera un pequeño puerto. Ezquerra después construyó varias casas privadas y dos hoteles más aquí con su misma marca de edificios blancos de estilo México-mediterráneo: Club Maeva en 1979 y lo que ahora conocemos como Tesoro Manzanillo en 1990. El gobierno municipal de Manzanillo lo comisionó en 2001 para rediseñar el centro en un estilo más tradicionalmente colonial, y crear un malecón para pasear en la playa de Miramar en la Bahía de Santiago en 2002. aruata is an indigenous word meaning “place of beautiful things” and, quite frankly, there is no better description for this famous beach in Michoacán. It is a must-see for all those who seek an alternative to conventional tourism. Taking the Highway 200 to Lázaro Cárdenas, approximately two hours south of Manzanillo, this small bay is divided into several sections by impressive rock formations. The scenery was truly breathtaking, with its golden sand and misty ocean breeze sweeping across the pristine water of the Pacific Ocean. so logically the first duty upon arrival was to instead find a five-star camping site, which was really no problem at all. Apart from the thatched gazebo made of palm tree leaves, there were also tables and chairs for rent, as well as access to bathrooms and showersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all available for a very modest price. So, with that taken care of, all that was left to do was revel at the breathtaking view of the bay. The shimmering water, boasting its various hues of blue, along with brawny cliffs, jetting unapologetically from the ocean, created an interesting contrast, as if in an eternal battle against a stubborn intruder, the ocean had slowly eaten away at the rocks, creating an entirely new world of tunnels and crevasses. We decided to wander off the beaten path and were delighted to come across a turtle sanctuary. Este pueblito de pescadores no cuenta con infraestructura hotelera, por lo que al llegar lo primero que hicimos fue elegir el lugar donde instalaríamos las casa de campaña, para lo cual existe un área de palapas, en donde, por un módico precio, puedes rentar mesas y sillas y tener acceso a los sanitarios y regaderas. Una vez resuelto este aspecto nos dedicamos a disfrutar de la impresionante vista de la bahía, las diferentes tonalidades del agua, la limpieza y en general del ambiente y el contraste con los riscos que sobresalen en los extremos de la playa, algunos de los cuales han sido perforados por el constante golpe de las olas, formando túneles. Caminamos un poco alejándonos de las palapas y encontramos un campamento tortugario, ya que toda la zona es un importante punto de arribo

de tortugas Laud, Golfina y Negra, que llegan a desovar durante los meses de Octubre y Noviembre, para lo cual se establece un sistema de vigilancia por parte de las autoridades, pobladores del lugar y algunas organizaciones civiles. Poco antes de oscurecer regresamos a nuestras casas de campaña para preparar la cena y admirar, como en pocas ocasiones, un cielo tapizado por cientos de estrellas, sentados alrededor de una fogata. Al otro día, después de desayunar, abordamos una lancha tripulada por Don Rubén y sus hijos, para hacer un recorrido, donde nos fueron mostrando las caprichosas figuras de los acantilados y riscos, formados por la erosión y el paso del tiempo, destacando uno llamado “El Dedo de Dios” ya que semeja la figura de una mano con un dedo apuntando hacia el cielo. pg. 107

the campfire, we sat in awe of a night sky peppered by thousands of bright stars that few people have the privilege of seeing. After having breakfast the next day, we decided on a tour. Fearlessly taking to the waters in a small boat crewed by “Don” Ruben and his children, we were shown the rock and cliff formations up close. These formations serve as refuge for various bird species. Ruben pointed out one in particular. Perfected by erosion and the passage of time, “The Finger of God,” was a sturdy rock eerily resembling a hand with its finger pointing directly to the sky. On that particular day, the water was pretty choppy, making it impossible to swim in the area known as “The Jacuzzi.” Located on the side of one of the cliffs, this natural whirlpool is one of the biggest attractions of the tour. When and only

conditions permit safe passage, daring visitors enter “The Jacuzzi” that connects to an intricate tunnel that stops just short of the shore. Continuing with the tour, after about 15 minutes we reached two small beaches: Old Maruata and Cairitos. Reached only by boat, Cairitos allowed us to sunbathe and swim with a group of Argentinian visitors. We spent hours just taking in the relaxed atmosphere of the uninhabited zone. Finally, and without realizing, it was time to return to Maruata. The wife of our guide and new friend, Ruben, had prepared a delicious meal of lobster bathed in fried garlic and barbecued red snapper. It was a true delight to the palette to taste the succulent seafood dishes that had been caught just moments before being prepared. As our trip came to an pg. 108

Además, estos riscos sirven como refugio para distintas especies de aves. Ese día el mar estaba “muy picado” según palabras de don Rubén, por lo que no fue posible disfrutar la experiencia de nadar en área de mar abierto, conocida como “el jacuzzi” ya que las rocas forman una fosa natural a un costado de los riscos, la cual es uno de los mayores atractivos de este paseo, siempre y cuando las condiciones del oleaje lo permitan, así como atravesar el túnel ubicado justo frente a la playa. Continuando con el recorrido, después de aproximadamente 15 minutos, llegamos a 2 pequeñas playas: Maruata viejo y Cairitos, en esta última pasamos el tiempo tomando el sol y nadando junto con un grupo de visitantes argentinos, disfrutando del ambiente relajado debido a que la zona esta deshabita-

da y el acceso es solamente por lancha. Así las horas pasaron sin darnos cuenta, pero teníamos que regresar a Maruata, donde la esposa de nuestro amigo Rubén nos había preparado unas deliciosas langostas al ajillo y guachinango asado, fue realmente placentero degustar estos suculentos platillos y con la frescura de haber sido pescados unos momentos antes de ser preparados. Posteriormente desmontamos las casas de campaña y empacamos nuestras pertenencias para emprender el viaje de regreso a Manzanillo, recorriendo la costa de Michoacán a través de la sinuosa carretera, admirando nuevamente los impresionantes paisajes que conforman esta parte del pacífico mexicano, convencidos de regresar muy pronto, para revivir esta relajante experiencia en contacto con pg. 108

end, we disassembled the tents and packed our belongings to begin the trek back to Manzanillo. Retracing our steps along the winding highway, we admired once again the stunning coastal landscape that makes up this part of the Mexican Pacific and promised ourselves to return soon, to be close to nature and far from the ring of a cellular phone. If you are a fan of the sun, beach and tranquility, then there is no better place than Maruata. You will find time to escape the daily hustle and bustle of the city, read a good book, spend time taking pictures of the magnificent landscape or simply relax with a walk at sunset, appreciating this “place of beautiful things.” pg. 106

he observation area 4,000 meters above sea level on the inactive Colima “Snow” Volcano is above the summit of the 3,860 meter active “Fire” Volcano and only five km away as the crow flies. On a clear day the observation point provides sp ectacular views of both the Fire Volcano and the summit of the Snow Volcano above it. However, even on a foggy, misty, day the mountain exerts a mystical charm and the observation point and the trip to it offer plenty of natural beauty to exp erience and enjoy. When we set out to visit to the Colima Snow Volcano National Park the skies were slightly overcast and as we began to climb the dirt and gravel road that twists and turns its way up to the National Park the mountain p eaks were not visible through the clouds. We went on any way in hop es that the clouds would burn off by the time we arrived at the top. Driving up through the forest of oak, western pine and ponderosa pine with thick underbrush and many yellow, orange, purple and pg. 118

burgundy colored wildflowers we stopp ed to appreciate the beauty of the vibrant nature surrounding us as well as the panoramic views of the valley and Ciudad Guzman far below us. Further on we stopp ed again to examine layers of soil visible in a bank alongside the road. The layers, ranging in color from black to tones of brown and ochre and varying in depth, gave us a sense of how the mountain had been created in stages by the volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. With the clouds building and the temp erature cooling appreciably as we climbed we carried on to the top parking lot from where we began our 45 minute walk up hill to the observation point. The air is thinner at this altitude so we took it easy as we walked. As we climbed slowly up the dirt road the fog moved around us rapidly on the wind, one mo- pg. 120 pg. 117

La clasificación de las capas van de color negro hasta los tonos marrones y ocres y que variables en profundidad, nos dio una idea de cómo la montaña se había creado en las etapas por las erupciones volcánicas de millones de años atrás. Con la formación de nubes y el descenso considerable en la temperatura mientras subíamos hemos realizado una parada, desde donde iniciamos nuestra caminata de 45 minutos cuesta arriba hasta el punto de observación. The turn off to the Parque Nacional Volcán Nevado de Colima from highway 54 is about 20 km before Ciudad Guzman when heading out of Colima. One can go there on one’s own and a four wheel drive vehicle is not necessary though a high clearance vehicle is a good idea. It is best to check with Protection Civil prior to leaving to make sure that the observation area is open and that you can ascend on the road at the time you arrive.

Para llegar a el Parque Nacional del inactivo Volcán Nevado de Colima desde la autopista 54, está unos 20 km. antes de Ciudad Guzmán partiendo desde Colima. Uno puede ir allí en su propio vehículo, pero una unidad convencional de cuatro ruedas no es suficiente, aunque un vehículo de alto rodaje es una buena idea. Es recomendable consultar con Protección Civil antes de ir, para asegurarse de que el área de observación está abierta y que usted puede ascender en el camino desde el momento de su llegada.

ment thickening to obscure the pines and the clumps of mountain grass and the next minute thinning rapidly in swirling whorls, leaving them exposed to our view once again. Arriving at the observation center to find the buildings and both mountain p eaks hidden in thick fog was not as disappointing as one might imagine. The sound of the wind in the pines and the fleeting glimpses through the moving fog of the rocks, trees and grass that compose this high mountain scenery lent the mountain a mystical, almost eerie feeling as well as a sense of timelessness that we might not otherwise have felt so strongly. It was chilly at the top in the wind and the fog though, exposed to the elements as we were, so we waited a bit in hop es that the fog would blow off and then headed back down to the parking lot. On the way back Enrique took the camera and set off exploring deep in the woods where he discovered several different sp ecies of wild mushrooms in colors of white, brown, black, beige, red and orange growing amongst the trees. Sean Farley Gomez was born in Colima Mexico in 1987. In October of 2002 he had his first contact with kite surfing. Sean and his friend, Eduardo Ochoa, who were both supported by their parents, began to experiment and learned how to kite surf, without any kind of instruction. In a short time Sean was

invited to participate in a competition in Hood River, Oregon, and it was here that he began his professional Kite Board career. Focusing his skills primarily on Course Racing, Sean placed 3rd place in 2007, 2nd place in 2008 and won the 2009 World Championship in San Francisco, California.***
