Although he likes to travel, his love for the place itself, his family, friends and the ocean makes him always return back home to Manzanillo, the place where he works, and where he met surfing at the age of 11, and ever since has become his lifestyle as he continues to surf in the near beaches of Jalisco and Michoacán, with the same astonishment and expectations of what the sea and nature are, give and represent, just as the same very day he rode a board for the first time, 21 years ago….

So we have expanded to a 100-page magazine stocked full of more amazing photography and ecoadventures, but now with a longer stories that offer a greater emphasis on the distinct destinations which make up our incredible coastline.

We will publish twice a year and feature an increased circulation of 50,000 copies each edition—100,000 annually— which continues to make ours the largest free publication of its caliber along the Mexican Pacific coast. winding two-lane highway flows like a ribbon from Puerto Vallarta down south towards Manzanillo through the heart of the Costalegre, or “happy coast”. Upscale private resort enclaves intermingle with once-forgotten fishing villages which have been discovered by nature and beach lovers and are now ideal destinations for people seeking sun, sand and solitude. Three main bays make up the Costalegre: Navidad, Tenacatita and Chamela.

Just north of Manzanillo airport (ZLO), Barra de Navidad and Melaque are the bustling hubs of the Costalgre on opposite ends of the Bahia de Navidad, with markets, quaint cobblestone streets with storefronts selling handicrafts and knick knacks, and numerous beachside restaurants specializing in seafood. A fresh water lagoon flows behind the town, and surfers catch the perfect wave off the pier at the far end of town.

Live music can be heard on the weekends resonating from several beach bars or in front of the Melaque town square.

The lush, private hideaway, El Tamarindo Resort, sits at the southern part of the bay and the new eco-resort community of Boca de Iguanas lies across the water from La Manzanilla.

Ample snorkeling on one of the area’s best reefs and beachside restaurants fill in the main portion of Tenacatita Bay. Further north lies the Costa Careyes, an exclusive portion of the Costalegre defined by an ultraboutique hotel and multimillion dollar holiday mansions painted an assortment of rainbow colors and capturing a distinct architectural style best defined as Mediterranean meets contemporary Mexican. any people have an image in their heads of enjoying a horseback ride during their Mexican vacation.

Some dream of trotting or cantering along a beach as waves gently lap at their horse’s feet, a cool sea breeze refreshes both horse and rider, and the sun slowly sinks into the western horizon. This is possible on flat beaches with packed sand such as Miramar and La Boquita on Santiago Bay in Manzanillo, or for registered guests at Blue Bay Village Los Angeles Locos on Tenacatita Bay and also through Costa Careyes, both in the Costalegre.

But interesting and scenic adventure rides deep into the heart of real, traditional Mexico abound on the outskirts of Melaque and Barra de Navidad, and need not be the cliché of a sunset ride along the beach.

Being raised far from the beach but near plenty of open range land, I have always loved a good horseback ride through the countryside so I teamed up with bi-lingual local horseman Horacio of Aguacate, a small settlement just south of Barra on Highway 200, to meet that challenge. We mounted pg. 24

Pero paseos interesantes y escénicos en el corazón del México tradicional abundan en las afueras de Melaque y Barra de Navidad y no tienen que ser el cliché de montar a caballo al atardecer en la playa.

Crecí lejos de la playa, pero rodeada de áreas abiertas, y siempre he sido fan de montar a caballo en el campo, entonces me asocié con un señor local que tiene caballos, Horacio, de Aguacate, un pueblo justo al sur de Barra, en la carretera 200, para cumplir mi deseo.

pg. 23 up, hit the trails and back roads, and developed rides through the rich plantation and farm lands between Aguacate and the mountains; along the dry river bed that runs from Aguacate; around the back of Laguna Navidad and over to Playa de Cocos—a beach where I find that riding is a pleasure—and a Cowboy Cantina ride that includes, of course, a visit on horseback to a botanero, an oft-times rowdy cantina that serves Mexican tapas with alcoholic drink orders. Shhhh, no one under 18 on this ride please!

These pleasant and mainly traffic-free routes coupled with Horacio’s well-trained and well-cared for horses and my light-weight North American style leather western saddles – a comfortable change from the rigid carved wood saddles normally used in this area – make for horseback rides that provide a variety of scenery, are relaxing, a lot of fun and a pleasure for both horse and rider.

We decided to tackle the shortest ride first, the two-hour plantation ride through the countryside around Aguacate. There is no shortage of open country to ride through and heading towards the hills we quickly leave the village of Aguacate behind as we trot and canter along quiet dirt roads that run between the hectares of farm, pasture and orchard lands and are lined with a variety of large, shady trees including parrota, palm and mango.

On the plantation ride, in addition to orchards and field crops you never pg. 26 know what you might see.

Decidimos probar el paseo más corto primero, el paseo de dos horas por los campos alrededor de Aguacate.

No hay terreno plano por donde pasar y dirigiéndonos hacia los montes pronto dejamos atrás el pueblo de Aguacate, mientras trotábamos y corríamos por las brechas que hay entre las hectáreas de campos, pastorales y huertas, moteadas de árboles grandes, incluyendo parotas, palmeras y mangos.

En este paseo, adicional a las huertas y los campos de cultivos, uno nunca sabe lo que puede encontrar. Me sorprendí la primera vez que vi un chivo joven subirse a un árbol buscando hojas, ya que no sabía que los chivos podían subir árboles.

pg. 24 I was surprised the first time I saw a young goat up in a tree foraging for leaves since I had no idea that goats can climb trees.

Keep an eye on the coconut palms and you may be fortunate enough to see a man high up in one of them cutting coconuts whilst supported only by his feet on the trunk and a thin rope around his waist. It looks dangerous but these fellows know what they are doing.

Another sight that surprised me when I saw it the first time were several iguanas feeding on the watermelon left behind in a field after harvest. On my last plantation ride just this week we came upon a new brick “factory� out in the fields. Riding past a coconut plantation and around a banana plantation to where the ground is quite swampy we came upon a man and his two sons making clay bricks from the mud in the swamp, straw and wood chips. A pile of coconut husks was standing by to fire the bricks

once the man had completed the kiln he was making from the bricks he was going to fire. We rode around another bend in the road and came upon a red and green field of pineapple almost ready for harvest and just past that we found a field of recently harvested melon. On the plantation tour what you can sample from the fields (Horacio has permission for that) depends on what is in season, bananas are pretty much always around and coming up in June, July and August is my favourite time of year to visit the orchards – mango season!

The ride that is really a treat for birdwatchers is the Arroyo Seco to Playa de Cocos ride. Once we pass under Highway 200 where it runs over the arroyo there is no vehicular traffic because the arroyo is fenced with a gate only wide enough to admit people on foot or by horseback.

On this three-hour ride, the arroyo or dry riverbed appears dry except right after heavy rains when water flows. pg. 28

Otro hecho que me sorprendió fue cuando vi por primera vez unas iguanas comiéndose una sandía olvidada en un campo.

En mi último paseo de plantación, la semana pasada me encontré una fábrica de ladrillos en el campo. Pasando por un sembradío de cocos y plátanos, llegando a donde la tierra es pantanosa, vi a un hombre y sus dos hijos haciendo ladrillos de barro usando el lodo del pantano, paja y pedazos de madera. Un montón de cascarones de cocos estaban a un lado, preparados para actuar como leña, una vez que el señor terminara de hacer el horno donde se iban a hornear los ladrillos. Montamos por otro camino y nos encontramos un campo rojo y verde llenos de piñas listas para ser cosechadas, y pasando eso vimos un campo de melones recién cosechados. En el tour de plantación, puede probar los frutos de los campos (Horacio tiene permiso para eso) dependiendo de la temporada, los plátanos casi siempre están listos y en Junio, Julio y Agosto—mi temporada favorita para visitar las huertas—¡hay mangos!

El camino divertido para los amantes de las aves es el del Arroyo Seco a la Playa de Cocos. Pasando por debajo de la carretera 200, que está por encima del arroyo, no hay tráfico vehicular, porque el arroyo está cercado y sólo tiene una entrada angosta por donde pueden pasar personas o caballos.

En este tour de tres horas, el arroyo está seco, excepto después de lluvias fuertes. Pero, aún en la temporada más seca, hay agua justo debajo de la tierra, por lo que el arroyo siempre está verde y repleto de vida avícola.

However, even in the driest part of the season there is water just below the surface of the sandy soil so the arroyo is always green and makes for abundant bird life.

Here, you will see large flocks of birds including heron and egret feeding in the grass that grows in the moist soil.

On one ride we came upon other horses and some cattle at pasture. The cattle stayed away from us, probably thinking we had arrived for a round up, but the other horses were curious about us newcomers and came over to take a closer look, following us all the way to the next gate.

The large trees that grow along the edges of the arroyo provide shade on the ride and cover for smaller birds such as urraca, calandria and small parakeets. Once we leave the arroyo we ride through the open farmland at the back of Laguna Navidad, ride a short distance pg. 26

along the side of the secondary highway, cross the little bridge over an irrigation canal, and arrive at Playa de Cocos.

Here, we ride along the beach for a few kilometres enjoying the packed sand at the water’s edge and the fresh ocean breeze that is a constant year-round.

The Cowboy Cantina ride is fun to do in the afternoon with a few friends.

Combining aspects of the plantation ride with a visit to a local ‘botanero’ where area farmers and villagers drink buckets of beer and eat the botanas (snacks) that come with the beers this afternoon ride provides a great way to experience a bit of the local culture, meet a few people and enjoy a horseback ride at the same time. Some people actually claim to be able to ride better after a couple of beers and the horses always get us home no matter when we are done!

Playa de Cocos. Aquí montamos por la playa varios kilómetros, disfrutando de la arena en la orilla y la brisa fresca de mar, que corre todo el año.

El tour Cowboy Cantina es muy divertido para disfrutarse en las tardes, con unos amigos. Local Tropical Fruit Bananas: An important cash crop for area farmers, bananas are ready for harvest pretty much year round in the Costalegre. Bananas are wrapped in newspaper and plastic prior to cutting to prevent bruising and to protect the mature fruit from the pesticides used on the immature fruit growing alongside. Once cut from the plant in large bunches, the bananas are cut again into ‘hands’ and washed right in the field to protect them from staining by the viscose liquid that comes out of the stalk when cut. After washing, the bananas are packed and shipped for sale in both foreign and domestic markets.

Mango: The mango trees always provide shade and beauty but in the months of June, July and even into August, ripe mangos hang from the trees in abundance in the Costalegre. Several varieties of mangos are grown in the area. An important cash crop for area farmers, most are shipped out of the area for sale in other markets.

Pineapple: A relatively new cash crop for this region fields of pineapple are still quite rare and most pineapple grown here are sold locally or in nearby cities.

Papaya: Papaya fields are not as common here in the south part of the Costalegre as they are in the north around Tomatlan. The papayas are picked, wrapped in newspaper and either sold locally or shipped north for sale in the U.S. and Canada, or to cities in Mexico.

Chillies: Jalapeno chillies are another important cash crop in the Costalegre. The chillies are picked green, bagged in large sacks and shipped out of the area piled high on large semi trailer trucks.

Tomatoes: Most of the tomatoes grown locally seem to be the salad or Roma tomato variety that is used so often in the rich salsas accompanying most meals.

Tomatoes grown here are sold in area stores or shipped out of the area to be consumed in other markets.

Cucumbers: The variety grown locally closely resemble the small curled cucumbers we grew in Canada for making dill pickles and when picked fresh while still small they actually make excellent crunchy pickles.

Local cucumbers are mainly sold in area stores and for pickle making. I have found local farmers that are willing to let me enter the field myself to choose and pick the small cucumbers I need to make my pepinillos.

Fruta Tropical Local plÁtanos: Un cultivo comercial importante para los productores locales, los plátanos se cosechan de manera anual en la costalegre. Melaque and Barra de Navidad, twin towns on either side of an arching bay, are havens for sun-seekers, artists, and people looking to do a lot of one thing: nothing.

Every winter in Melaque, the tiny town that sits to the north of the wide bay, it becomes quietly full of low-key, beachcombing vacationers. Time stands still, and even turns several years back.

There isn’t much to do other than wander leisurely along the edge of the pounding surf, eat lots of seafood, and watch as generations of fishermen ply their trade in the frothing waves.

Barra de Navidad, the site of the expansive Grand Bay five-star hotel complex and 18-hole golf course, is renowned for its clean point break that curls in off the south end of the bay. Tenacatita, which means “colored rocks”, lies approximately 9 kilometers from the highway, and was so named because of a ridge of reddish rock rising out of the south end of the bay. Locals say centuries ago, the Aztecs who populated this sunny bay used pieces of the fiery stone in building their homes.

Today, the fine golden sand and gentle surf form an ideal setting for relaxed family fun.

Several modest beachside palapa restaurants serving fresh seafood and plenty of cold cervesa and coconuts dot the north end of the bay where the waters are so clean and aquamarine you can see right down to the bottom. A group of jagged, weather-beaten rocks rise out of the sea, forming a natural habitat for an amazing array of sea creatures.

Tenacatita,que significa “rocas coloradas”, se encuentra a unos 9 kilómetros de la carretera, y recibe su nombre por un risco de piedra rojiza en el sur de la bahía. Los locales cuentan que los aztecas que habitaban la región utilizaban la piedra colorada para construir sus viviendas.

Hoy en día la arena dorada y el mar tranquilo conforman el entorno ideal para un escape familiar. It is located before Careyes. Right on the road that takes you from Manzanillo to Puerto Vallarta, you will find on your left a town called Emiliano Zapata. Drive through it, follow the dirt road to the beach. It is about a mile and a half drive through the hills and farmers lands, but at the very end of it you’ll find it.

y neighbors come from Guadalajara and often “party hardy” until 5 am. When their SUVs start unloading two dozen family members, I go camping. One of my favorite places to escape is La Boquita by the Juluapan (Who-looá-pahn) Lagoon. Mother Nature’s greatest gift is waking up in the morning to the call of the sea birds, the waves as they slap the shore, and breathing in the cleansing sea mist.

As I tumble out of the van to stretch, and take my rescue poodle Sandy for a walk, the lagoon is just coming to life at sunrise. The turkey vultures are out picking up delicacies left by tourists unconcerned about preserving our ecosystems (Sandy makes her early morning deposit, which I pick up with a plastic doggy doo-doo bag).

We walk in the crisp, cool morning air, and notice other things. Male fiddler crabs are trying to entice females by wiggling their large claws in a “come hither” manner. This encourages the ladies to come with them into pg. 60

Uno de mis lugares favoritos para escaparme es La Boquita, en la Laguna de Juluapan. Me bajo de mi camioneta para estirarme, y llevar a pasear a mi poodle, que rescaté, y la laguna cobra vida al amanecer. Los buitres están recogiendo las delicias que olvidan los turistas, que nunca se preocupan por conservar el medio ambiente (Sandy hace su depósito mañanero, que siempre procuro recoger con una bolsita de plástico).

As I wade in the warm waters around Juluapan lagoon, I see numerous hermit crabs scavenging at the tide line, and a flounder, small in size, scurrying out of my way. I notice molted empty shells of small shrimp, born in the lagoon. In one area, I see razor clam shells, their name denoting what they can do to you if you step on one barefooted.

As Sandy and I continue our walk, we notice a local fisherman with his circular net, casting it out in search of small bait fish, to be used when he takes his boat out for the “big ones.” Fishing by casting this hand woven net is really an art form that has been passed down from generation to generation here in Mexico (and I’d like to try it some day, but I’m afraid I’d embarrass myself).

We are soon joined by a small puppy, who takes a tremendous interest in Sandy, and in the small shells I pick up and cast into the lagoon. It is crystal clear and the tide is coming in this morning, bringing fresh sea water to replenish the Laguna de Juluapan.

I’m getting to my favorite part of the lagoon, where the various species of herons, gulls, egrets, cormorants, stilts, and many other water birds are waking up and going about getting breakfast. I watch and smile as a frigate bird, lazy sloth that he is, swoops down and tries to steal food from the other birds who work for a living.

The lagoon is alive, as if it is a living, breathing entity! A gentle breeze delicately sways the mangroves along the bank, and I stand there mesmerized as a blue heron, that was invisible pg. 70

Mientras Sandy y yo continuamos nuestra caminata, vemos un pescador local con su red circular, aventándola en busca de peces pequeños para carnada, que utilizará después en su lancha en busca de los peces grandes.

Pescar con una red hecha a mano es un arte que ha sido transmitido de generación en generación aquí en México (y me gustaría intentarlo algún día, pero me temo que quedaría en vergüenza).

Pronto nos alcanza un pequeño cachorro, muy interesado en Sandy y en las conchitas que recojo y aviento hacía la laguna. Está muy clara el agua y la marea viene entrando esta mañana, trayendo agua fresca del mar para alimentar la Laguna de Juluapan.

Estoy llegando a mi parte favorita de la laguna, donde varias especies de garzas, gaviotas, zancos, y muchas más aves de agua, se están despertando y buscando su desayuno. Los veo y sonrío mientras un pájaro de fragata, de manera muy floja aterriza e intenta robarles comida a las demás aves que están trabajando para comer.

La laguna está viva, es una entidad viviente, ¡respirando! La brisa delicada mueve los manglares en la orilla y me quedo pasmada mientras una garza azul, que era invisible hace pg. 70

birds in our lagoons / aves en nuestras lagunas There are more than 57 different species of birds that have been catalogued as living in our lagoons.

The Mexican Shorebird Atlas project has found that the Pacific Coast flyway has a much larger number of shorebirds using it, 1.35 million or 91.5%, than the Gulf of Mexico/ Caribbean coasts with 125,000 or 8.5% in surveys done over a three-year period. The Laguna de Cuyutlán ranked 5th in the total number of shore birds surveyed. In other words our lagoons are alive and thriving!

Hay más de 57 especies diferentes de aves catalogados en nuestras lagunas. El proyecto de Atlas de Aves Costeros ha encontrado que la Costa Pacífica cuenta con un número amplio de aves costeros, 1.35 millones, o 91.5%, mientras que las costas del Golfo/Caribe, cuentan con 125,000 o 8.5%, en un periodo de tres años. mangrove wetlands and lagoons manglares y lagunas There are several scenic and extensive mangrove wetlands and lagoons—protected by the federal government—in the state of Colima.

Laguna de Juluapan

Most popular, where the beach known as La Boquita fronts the northernmost point of Santiago Bay, with a man-made channel leading to the lagoon on the other side of the spit of land. On weekends many families will come and play with their children in the clean, calm, shallow water.

On the beach side, there are numerous ramada seaside restaurants serving delicious seafood (Marildo’s is a favorite), and a variety of nativeIndian vendors selling everything from handicrafts to beach cover-ups. Umbrellas with a table and chairs are also available for rent on both beach and lagoon sides for about 60 pesos.

Directions: Highway 200 to the entrance of Club Santiago (across from La Vianda market), go through the gate, follow the cobblestone road straight until it turns to dirt and continue along either access until you reach the lagoon.

Laguna de Las Garzas

Adjoining Highway 200, it leads to Manzanillo’s interior harbor separating the main boulevard from Valle Las Garzas, and is an excellent location to spot a variety of feeding wetland bird species, including several types of heron and pink spoonbills. A portion of it was scheduled to be taken over as part of the development of the port but recent protests by environmental groups have been successful in halting the destruction of this wetlands area.

Directions: From the Las Brisas traffic circle, follow Highway 200 toward central Manzanillo, and in a few blocks, you’ll see the lagoon on both sides.

Hay varias lagunas, humedales y manglares –protegidas por el gobierno federal—en el estado de Colima.

La más popular, donde la playa conocida como La Boquita está en el punto más norte de la Bahía de Santiago, con un canal artificial creando una entrada a la laguna. Los fines de semana las familias vienen con sus niños a disfrutar del agua limpia, tranquila y poco profunda. Del lado de la playa hay varias ramadas, donde sirven mariscos deliciosos (Marildo’s es uno de los favoritos), y varios vendedores nativos ofrecen desde manualidades hasta pareos. Sombrillas con mesas y sillas están en renta en la playa y la laguna, aproximadamente a 60 pesos.

Direcciones: Por la Carretera 200 a la entrada a Club Santiago (en frente del super La Vianda), pasé por la caseta, siga el camino empedrado derecho hasta que se haga una brecha y continúe hasta llegar a la laguna.

Junto a la carretera 200, lo lleva al puerto interior de Manzanillo que separa el boulevard principal del Valle de las Garzas, y es un lugar excelente para ver varios tipos de herones y garzas. Una parte de esta laguna se iba desarrollar como parte del crecimiento del Puerto, pero grupos ambientalistas han logrado detener la destrucción de los manglares en esta zona.

Direcciones: Desde la glorieta de Las Brisas, siga la carretera 200 hacía el centro de Manzanillo y en pocas cuadras verá la laguna de los dos lados.

Laguna de Cuyutlan Longest and largest, it is found along the toll highway to Colima and has a length of 31 miles, and its 7,200 hectares has supplied sea salt for various uses for more than 450 years.

Additionally, fishermen are regularly seen casting their nets and lines in the fertile waters. Salt water crocodiles are frequently seen here, and the Cuyutlan “Tortugario,” or Turtle Sanctuary, routinely releases and monitors young crocs in a certain area of the lagoon. (Crocodiles, iguanas, turtles and other species are protected in Colima.)

Directions: This lagoon can be accessed at many points. On Highway 200, follow the signs to Colima. By taking the cuota, or toll road, you’ll pass over the lagoon (Puente Tepalcates). Below, on the left side of the bridge, you’ll see a small restaurant. Take the first exit, with signs saying “Tepalcates,” and “Campos.” Bear right. Take a right on the first dirt road off the highway, and when it “Y”s, take the left fork. You can follow the road to the restaurant, which is right on the lagoon.

If you take the Highway 200 free (libre) road, you’ll be driving along the lagoon for quite a few kilometers, and you’ll have a chance to see where the salineros (salt workers) harvest sea salt. By going all the way to Cuyutlan and following the signs to the ”Tortugario,” or Turtle Sanctuary, you can walk behind the sanctuary to the lagoon and take an interesting lagoon tour for only $40 pesos.

Look for “Cesar,” one of the boat guides, and you’ll have a more interesting tour. Cesar takes the time to point out the various birds—including eagles and hawks—and has an Audubon Society book with all the local species marked.

La más grande y larga, situada en la autopista hacía Colima, con una longitud de 50 kilómetros y 7,200 hectáreas, ha proveído sal de grano para múltiples usos, durante mas de 450 años.

Why are lagoons so important

Por qué las lagunas son tan importantes

They are the base of life—all life. Our lagoons are lined with three types of mangroves: Red, black, and white (named for the color of their bark), and buttonwood, which is related and sometimes called a mangrove. What you most readily see is the red mangrove with its noticeable prop roots.

The black and the white mangroves grow behind them.

Mangroves are extremely important to the ecosystems of lakes, lagoons and sea. They shed leaves copiously all year long, creating the basic source of food. Bark, twigs, root material, guano from birds roosting in the trees, and organic matter of all kinds including dead animals and loose sea grass trapped in the maze of roots add to it. All decompose to begin the food chain. Bacteria and fungi are the agents that produce edible detritus and are themselves eaten by marine animals often too small to see. They in turn are consumed by bigger animals. And finally, larger predators, including humans, come along to harvest the bounty, including shrimp, crabs and fish. In summary, not only are mangroves essential in the initiation of the food chain, they are vital to protect our coastline from erosion during periods of high waves, hurricanes, and even tsunamis.

Separated by a steep sandbar, the crashing ocean meets the serene Centinela lagoon system that starts north of the airport and runs to Barra de Navidad. Kayakers and campers spot many bird species and the odd crocodile.

hat is now considered a common table element was once a strategic resource of great value for Mesoamerica during pre-Hispanic and colonial times when it was a scarce commodity.

Sea salt from Cuyutlán and its surrounding estuary located 62 kilometers south of Manzanillo was even referred to as “white gold” in the 16th century. It played an important role during the Spanish colonization of Mexico as a major supplier for the silver mines of Guanajuato, as salt was used then in the production of silver.

Sodium chloride is abundant in salt water and sunlight, essential for evaporating brine, is plentiful and intense throughout the year, especially from April to June when salt making takes place. (During rainy season, salt water becomes diluted and salineros turn to fishing or move inland to take up other forms of work, such as growing sugar cane and maize.)

From pre-Hispanic times to just 50 years ago, the area became a veritable salt emporium with countless sites large and small where salt was produced. Today, sea salt mining is still considered a major industry in Cuyutlán, along with fishing.

pg. 91 La madre naturaleza ha conformado las condiciones ecológicas ideales para la producción de sal a lo largo de la costa de Cuyutlán hasta Maruata en Michoacán. El cloruro de sodio es abundante en agua salada y en esta zona el sol, esencial para evaporar el agua, es intenso durante todo el año, especialmente de Abril a Junio cuando se fabrica la sal. (Durante la temporada de lluvias, el agua se diluye y los salineros se dedican a la pesca o viajan al interior del país para trabajar en otras áreas como la cosecha de caña y maíz).

Museo de sal, Cuyutlan History buffs should visit the Museo de Sal in Cuyutlán, a rickety old salt storage barn that displays the history, techniques and tools used for sea salt production. Museum hours are 8 a.m. to 8:30 pm daily.

Sea salt is sold in roadside stands heading out of Manzanillo and along the toll road to Colima for about 7 pesos a kilo bag.

Los aficionados de la historia deben de visitar el Museo de Sal en Cuyutlán, una vieja granja de almacenaje de sal que exhibe la historia, técnicas y herramientas usadas en la producción de la sal marina. El horario es de 8 a.m a 8:30 pm diario.

La sal marina (o sal de grano) se puede comprar en puestos a lo largo de la carretera de Colima-Manzanillo con precios dese 7 pesos el kilo.

season to leave crusty patch called salitre. This salty crust is mixed with salt water from the estuary, producing brine that is evaporated in the sun to get crystallized salt.

In the early days the entire process was all-natural. Filtering was done with several layers of grass, small stones and sand. Brine was poured into evaporation pans called “eras” made of beach sand and lime (also plentiful in area). And crystallized salt was scraped with “cayuco”, a palm tree pod or husk that is firm but flexible.

Today, the production of sea salt in Cuyutlán has taken a modern twist.

Plastic sheets instead of lime pans are used for evaporation, and gasoline pumps and rubber hoses move water and brine instead of buckets. The product is still the same: fresh chunky white crystals rich in minerals from the sea. pg. 92

En tiempos pasados el proceso fue completamente natural. La filtración se hacía a través de varias capas de pasto, piedritas y arena. La salmuera fue depositada en contenedores llamados “eras” hechos con arena y limón.

La sal cristalizada se raspaba con un “cayuco”, hecho con madera de palma firme pero flexible.

Hoy en día la producción de la sal de grano en Cuyutlán se ha modernizado. Hojas de plástico se usan en lugar de las “eras” para la evaporación, y bombas de gasolina con tuberías de goma han tomado el lugar de las cubetas de salmuera. Sin embargo el producto sigue siendo el mismo: deliciosos cristales de sal marina ricas en minerales. pg. 92
