for myself what Rancho Cuixmala had to offer to travelers, I set off, with a friend, on a journey along what is irrefutably Mexico’s most spectacular coast, Careyes, north of Manzanillo, Colima, in the state of Jalisco, to take a tour of the ranch and visit “La Casa Azul”, a unique, artfully-decorated place in which to recharge one’s batteries and get a glimpse of what country living is all about. Rancho Cuixmala is a working ranch, lovingly administered by the owners for many decades, and is home to an aweinspiring number of unique species of trees, flowers, plants and animals. A bird watcher’s haven, the property boasts a magnificent lagoon with an observation tower from which the ranch’s owners and tour guides provide a wealth of information about the pg. local species.

Until the 1950’s, Rancho Cuixmala was only accessible by boat from the Careyes coast. Over the years, the ranch has decreased in size, making way for tourism development in the area.The land has always been run by generations of the family since last century. Sustainable development is the ranch’s mission.The owners see themselves first as earth stewards with the daily task of making a positive impact on the land and its inhabitants.

The ranch is located at Kilometer 44 along the highway between Melaque and Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. It is approximately 90 minutes north of Manzanillo and 2 hours south of Puerto Vallarta. A visit to the ranch requires a reservation. A gatekeeper will open the pathway to the grounds the last few kilometers along the main road of the ranch to “La Casa Azul” where your hosts will receive you.
El rancho está ubicado en el kilómetro 44 de la carretera entre Melaque y Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Está a aproximadamente 90 minutos al norte de Manzanillo y 2 horas al sur de Puerto Vallarta. What we had expected to be a day tour would need to be, in fact, a week-long stay or more, to fully soak up all of the experiences to be had and memories to be made at the ranch. loop! We are back to where we first began. The cat is smarter than the dog and that crafty little bobcat has eluded us once again. Fast track to January 2007 and I am back on the volcano with local volcanologist Juan-Carlos Gavilanes Ruiz and photographer Sergio Velasco (http:// www.volcandecolima.com/). We are hiking up the Montegrande canyon on the south flank of the volcano to view recent lava flow deposits. There! Well marked in the fresh ash are the prints of a puma about 12 months old. I am ecstatic – “Puma tracks!” - I shout to my colleagues who are studying a
massive pyroclastic flow deposit behind me. It’s a great day! This means that not only are the cats still present on the volcano, but they are also breeding. During my research I tracked three adult male pumas, two male bobcats and one female bobcat, fitted with radio-collars. The bobcats spent their lives within the area known as “El Playón” within the caldera of the ancient Paleovolcán de Colima. Continuous volcanic activity has maintained a shrub and grassland community in continual succession, creating an ideal habitat for abundant rodents (rats and mice) and rabbits -- a good and easy prey base for bobcats. The ranges of the male pumas were huge, sometimes covering more than 180 square miles. The cats walked long distances at night. A cat might be located pg. 24

Es enero del 2007 y estoy de vuelta en el volcán con el vulcanólogo Juan Carlos Gavilanes Ruiz y el fotógrafo Sergio Velasco. Estamos excursionando por el cañón Montegrande sobre la falda sur del volcán para observar los depósitos de los recientes flujos de lava. ¡Ahí está! Bien marcada en la ceniza fresca se pueden percibir las huellas de un puma como de doce meses. Estoy extático “¡Huellas de puma!” grito a mis colegas, quienes están estudiando el depósito masivo de un flujo piroclástico a mis espaldas. ¡Qué gran día! Este hallazgo significa que no solamente siguen presentes en el volcán, sino que los felinos siguen teniendo crías. En el curso de mi estudio, seguí los movimientos de tres pumas machos adultos y tres linces, 2 machos y una hembra, con collares radio. Los linces pasaron sus vidas dentro de la zona conocida como “El Pla-
yón” dentro de la caldera del anciano Paleovolcán de Colima. La continua actividad volcánica ha mantenido siempre una comunidad de maleza y prados. Esto ha creado un hábitat ideal para muchos roedores y conejos, más que suficiente presa para mantener a los linces. Los territorios de los pumas machos eran enormes. A veces cubrían hasta 300 kilómetros cuadrados. Los felinos cubrían grandes distancias durante las noches. Un puma podría encontrarse en el cañón Atenqueque sobre el costado este del Nevado de Colima un día y al día siguiente se hallaba en las cuestas oeste en el cañón Alceseca, justo arriba del pueblo Zapotitlán de Vadillo. También descubrí que los felinos a menudo se encontraban cerca de los abrevaderos y manantiales durante la temporada seca, como también lo hacen los leones en África, pero aquí los pumas esperan a cazar el ciervo de cola blanca y el jabalí. Irónicamente, es el mismo volcán el que ahora protege a los felinos y no las autoridades. Desde que iniciase la actual época de actividad eruptiva en 1998, el área de la cima se ha mantenido cerrada a los turistas, los caminos del volcán se han deteriorado y los cazadores ilegales casi no visi- pg. 24

within the Atenqueque canyon on the eastern slopes of Nevado de Colima one day and then the next day be found on the western slopes of the volcanoes in the Alceseca canyon above the town of Zapotitlan de Vadillo. I also found that the cats were most often located near waterholes and springs during the dry season, just like lions in Africa, but here the pumas wait for white-tailed deer and wild boars. Ironically it is not the authorities that are protecting the cats, but the volcano. Since the current eruptive episode began in 1998, the summit area has been closed to tourists, roads on the volcano have deteriorated, and hunters (poachers) rarely visit the volcano. Conserving these majestic cats is important not just for the ecological balance of the volcanoes, but also for future generations to witness their prints and know that a puma passed by. A lucky few may even manage a glimpse of the “mountain ghost”.

The Puma is a fantastic athlete and compared with other large cats, has unusually long hind legs, an adaptation for jumping. They can leap 18 feet straight up a cliff, and there are stories of pumas being chased by dogs, making downhill leaps of 30 to 40 feet long. Puma can swim as well as climb trees when they need to, and they commonly take refuge in trees when chased by dogs. The Puma’s coat can be red-brown, blue gray, or almost any color in between.The reddish coat color tends to be more common in tropical areas. Pumas may have gray, golden, or even blue eyes! What do Pumas eat? The main prey of pumas are deer; ranging from the tiny redbrocket deer of the tropics to the massive North American elk. Puma are also an important predator of desert big-horn sheep. However, throughout it’s range, the puma is closely tied to the distribution and abundance of white-tailed deer. Puma also prey on javelina, coatimundis, opossums, raccoons, armadillos, foxes and coyotes, skunks, rabbits, ground squirrels, and even wild turkeys. In Patagonia and the Andes of South America, wild guanacos are the principal prey of pumas. Who are the Puma’s predators on the Colima Volcanoes? Male pumas fight over territories which may include 2-3 resident females. In such battles it is not uncommon for one of the fighting males to be killed or severely injured. Man is the principal enemy of the puma. Poison is frequently used to eliminate pumas from ranches around the volcanoes. A slow and very painful death. Ilegal hunting on the lower slopes of the Colima Volcanoes is of major concern. Pumas have been shot by local deer poachers, ranchers, and even the infamous “city hunters”. In the United States, Chihuahua and Sonora, trophy hunting of pumas is big business. How long do Puma live? Life span is approximately 8-12 years in the wild. Up to 20 years in captivity. How big is a Puma? Male Pumas have a large robust head. Females have a slender head. This pattern is seen in house (domestic) cats. Adult males (145 to 165 pounds) are nearly 50 percent larger than adult females (88 to 99 pounds).This difference in body size and shape between male and female pumas is what has given rise to the myth of the “onza”.The onza is a female puma! Giant males (200 pounds) have been recorded, but are very rare. How many kittens are born in a litter? Two to three cubs are born after a 90-95 day gestation period. How long do the kittens stay with their mother? Young pumas acquire their permanent canines by eight months of age.That is the very earliest they could survive on their own, though unlikely.Young pumas leave their mothers anywhere from 10 to 21 months of age. Average is 15.2 months.That will vary depending upon geographical area.

Pueden desplazarse o brincar desde un acantilado de 5.5 metros de altura, y hay relatos en los que pumas, perseguidos por perros, han llegado a brincar de 9 a 12 metros. Un puma puede nadar al igual que trepar árboles cuando necesitan hacerlo, y se refugian en ellos comúnmente cuando son perseguidos por perros. El color de un puma puede ser café rojizo, gris o algo intermedio. El pelo rojizo tiende a ser más común en los pumas de las áreas tropicales. El color de sus ojos puede ser gris, ámbar o incluso azul. Qué comen? La presa principal es el venado; desde los pequeños venados tamazate provenientes de los trópicos hasta los ciervos americanos. Es también depredador importante del borrego cimarrón y del venado cola blanca. También son sus presas los jabalíes, tejones, tlacuaches, mapaches, armadillos, zorras y coyotes, zorrillos conejos, tezmos, guajolotes. En Patagonia y Los Andes de Sudamérica, los guanacos son la presa principal de los pumas. Quiénes son sus depredadores en los volcanes de Colima? Los pumas macho luchan por su territorio, lo que incluye de 2 a 3 hembras. En estas batallas no es raro que uno de los machos muera o resulte severamente herido. El hombre es el principal enemigo del puma. El veneno se usa frecuentemente para eliminarlos de ranchos aledaños a los volcanes. Una muerte lenta y muy dolorosa. La caza ilegal en las regiones de los volcanes de Colima es una preocupación latente. Rancheros e infames cazadores ilegales les han disparado a estos seres. En Estados Unidos, Chihuahua y Sonora, la caza deportiva de pumas es un negocio. Cuánto viven? De 8 a 12 años en su hábitat. Más de 20 años en cautiverio. Qué tan grande es el puma? Los machos tienen una cabeza larga y robusta mientras que la de las hembras es más delgada, estilizada. Este patrón también se presenta en los gatos domésticos. El cuerpo de los machos adultos (65 a 75 kg) es 50% más largo que el de las hembras (40 a 45 kg). Esta diferencia ha dado origen al mito de la "onza". La onza es un puma hembra! Se tienen registros de pumas macho gigantes (90 kg) pero son casos muy raros. Cuántas crías tienen por camada? De dos a tres crías nacen después de un periodo de gestación de 90 a 95 días. Por cuánto tiempo permanecen las crías con sus mamás? Los pumas pequeños adquireren sus caninos permanentes a la edad de 8 meses. Esta es la edad mínima con la cual pueden sobrevivir por sí solos aunque es casi improbable. Los pequeños dejan a sus mamás a la edad de 10 meses o casi los 2 años. Pero en promedio se van a la edad de 1 año y 3 meses aproximadamente. Este dato varía dependiendo del área geográfica.

ll signs pointed to an exciting day and we were not about to let the early morning clouds and rain deter us from our tour. We arrived at our starting point, ready to begin our adventure. Melanie, one of our guides, along with Luis and Manuel, pointed out which Jeep was ours and, without further ado, we took our places. Alex was the designated driver, Dana the copilot and Martin and I decided to sit in the back and enjoy the ride. Off we went on the way to Chandiablo. We started out from Santiago’s central plaza and set out on the trail which would take us to our first checkpoint where we would receive our instructions concerning the tour. pg. 28
apuntaba ser un día realmente emocionante y, aunque amaneció algo nublado y con lluvia, eso no nos detuvo para iniciar nuestro recorrido. Melanie, junto con Luis y Manuel, nuestros guías, nos mostraron cuál era nuestro Jeep y, sin demorarnos más, tomamos nuestros lugares. Alex fue el designado para manejar, mientras yo y tres amigos más nos acomodamos en el Jeep para disfrutar del recorrido. Así nos dirigimos hacía Chandiablo. Salimos por la plaza de Santiago y tomamos un camino de terracería,que nos llevó a un primer punto de estación. Es un pequeño balneario donde nos detuvimos brevemente sólo para escuchar las indicaciones sobre el recorrido, las precauciones que deberíamos tomar y también nos proporcionaron un paliacate para cubrirnos la boca del polvo. Retomando el camino, nos encontramos rodeados de una vasta vegetación y un olor a tierra mojada que impregnaba el ambiente de mucha emoción y el aire fresco daba una sensación de armonía con todo a pg. 28

up the tops. In this little hamlet, at about 155 km from Chandiablo, we were received by a group of children playing in the plaza. Melanie informed us that, between the nearby town of Don Tomas and Otates, the combined population does not exceed 350. The town contains a small church and a fresh water dispensatory which sells potable water to the locals at 5 pesos per 20 liters. There is also a small general store which stocks up periodically with the basics such as cleaning supplies and food. After a brief stop we took off again, heading towards El Mojo, the last stop on our road that morning. On the way, we passed several shepherds and small houses in the middle of nowhere, with wandering cows and horses dotting the landscape, pg. 34

making their customary rounds. Once we arrived at the El Mojo bridge, we could see the river El Marbasco down below. Macario, owner of a cooperative adjacent to the river which has formed a small beach, runs a small palapa here, along with his wife, Rosalba, and daughter, Vanesa. They prepare the most delicious quesadillas made with homemade tortillas and salsa made in a molcajete, a sort of mortar and pestle of volcanic rock. There is camping nearby, as well as parking, which allowed us to spend a long while with Macario and his family and listen to their tales of the history of the area. We were having such a good time that it made leaving quite difficult but finally, still just as excited as at the beginning, I took the wheel for the drive home. Along different rivers and paths this time, our ride home was just as thrilling as the drive out.

frío y abundante bosque. Llegando al puente de El Mojo, ya en Chandiablo, se puede ver, desde lo alto, el Río del Marbasco, que es el limite entre Colima y Jalisco. Macario, propietario de un ejido que da hacia el río y que forma una pequeña playa, construyó una palapa que atiende él, junto con su esposa Rosalba y su hija Vanesa. Ahí preparan a los visitantes unas ricas quesadillas con tortillas hechas a mano y salsita de molcajete. En este lugar se puede acampar. También cuenta con estacionamiento cerca de ahí, lo cual lo hace muy accesible para visitar. Los fines de semana se pueden ver familias que vienen de día de campo y gustan de nadar en las frescas aguas del río. Después de escuchar las historias de Macario sobre el lugar tuvimos que prepararnos para el camino de regreso, pero nos sentimos tan a gusto que prometimos regresar muy pronto.

Yes, as a foreigner, there is more way than one to own land in Mexico. The first is in your own name just like the US or Canada, provided you are outside Mexico's Restricted Zone (50km from the coast and 100km from the boarders). Second, the very popular way (especially with the banks that charge you to form them) is the Trust system or Fidecomiso. In this system the beachfront property inside the Restricted Zone can be owned by your Trust, but held by a Mexican bank, naming you as sole benefactor and giving you all the rights as a Mexican would have owning that land. Yet another, less expensive and more flexible, more controllable way exists but is seldom mentioned. You can buy residential property (like a beachfront lot-which is obviously in the restricted zone) by forming a Mexican corporation. The corporation owns the beachfront lot and you simply own and control the corporation 100% - no Mexican or Mexican Bank
needed. We practice this same system of real estate ownership in the US in many states. For example, in New York, they call it a "co-op". The benefits? Cost to start. Try $650 USD to form a corporation and NOT thousands of dollars for a Trust. Annual costs to maintain are a tenth of what a bank will charge you for your Trust. And the best part, you can reuse that corporation to buy and sell other properties. (You may put two properties in one trust but it must be done at the same time.) golf The name golf may have been derived from the old Scots verb “to gowff ” meaning to “strike hard.” The earliest known written detail on the subject of golf is from King James II in 1457 who demanded that “fute-ball and golfe be utterly cryed down and not to be used.” The King was concerned that his citizens were so involved in leisurely pursuits that they were neglecting the Royal and vital sport of archery, which would protect him from the enemy. It took until 1502, in the reign of King James IV and a Treaty of Perpetual Peace (which didn’t last!) with England’s King Henry VII before the Scots were allowed to spare the time on such pursuits. King James IV himself played the game at Perth.

My team is what this is all about. They all work in sync and are very orderly in assuring the success of the project. It is a pleasure to serve the public and we have garnered a lot of interest throughout the years. It brings the community together.
When I was young, I helped my father building the slabs, planks and beams to make the petatera. Through the years, we built the pieces that made up the stadium under the direction of four successive project leaders, then the distinction was passed on to me. What makes me proud is that the petatera is being recognized around the country and other states are asking us to go and build the stadium for expositions. Next year we may be taking the petatera to California in the United States. For me, this outside recognition and respect for my work is an honor."

longstanding tradition in the state of Colima, the petatera is a shaded stadium and bull ring with stories to tell. While the structure itself is both a majestic work of art and a technological marvel, the historical and modern-day significance is what gives it its true dimensions. With a history of more than 150 years, this legend begins in Villa de Álvarez, Colima. The site of countless bull fights that have brought both Mexican and internationallyrenowned bull fighters together in legendary competitions, the petatera is a structure that is created with interwoven wooden beams, bolstered with slabs and furnished with petates which are woven mats. The task of producing the materials keeps more than 50 multi-generational family members busy throughout the year. Perhaps the pg. 56

56 pg. 55 most fascinating fact about the stadium is that it is artfully constructed each year, then is carefully torn down and saved for the next fair or event where it will be put back into commission. Taking more than 25 men over a month to put together, and only a week to bring down with as many as 70 people working on the task, the logistics are nothing short of mystical. Each piece is numbered to fit into the master plan. Each time it is dismantled, the pieces that are assigned to each guardian are loaded onto trucks to be safeguarded in several locations that keep the wood and mats free from humidity and pests. Each year, when the pieces are brought back together, the artists inspect each and every piece and set about replacing any pieces that are not in top condition. The inspection and construction are overseen by the man that has held the distinction as the project leader for over 12 years, and 40 years involved in the construction. Only few have held the distinction in the past. It is now the pride of a man with a twinkle in his eye and stories to tell, known as El Pajarito (the little bird, in English), Desiderio Contreras, now a young 74 years old. Many a bull fight, rodeo and concert has taken place in the great petatera. Memories are made, bright festivals and coronations are celebrated, and all that have visited and enjoyed the petatera talk about it with the affection one affords a cherished friend. The petatera is often the highlight of the photographs taken at the very events it hosts. A legend in itself, the monumental structure
has built many rich memories for those that have sat with family and friends, enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime moment or two. The legend of the petatera has now reached beyond Villa de à lvarez and the stadium is now in demand at fairs and exhibitions throughout the country, including Manzanillo, and in the United States. Pieces are carried by truck to these far-reaching destinations and are assembled by El Pajarito’s team, headed up by Luis and Julio. The men stay on site throughout the duration of the event in order to ensure the safety and security of the stadium for all to enjoy.
