R umors
A través de la neblina del tiempo...
had been going around for years about amazing petroglyphs near La Huerta on highway 80, about 50 km from Barra de Navidad and Melaque. It was said that one of these was a figure with what appeared to be a helmet that gave him the appearance of an extraterrestrial and that for some mysterious reason photos taken at the site could not be developed. That film came out blank. Then a new rumor emerged, a rumor that the petroglyphs had been destroyed during blasting at a marble quarry in the same ridge they are located in. Wanting to know more, armed with a digital camera and friend César who’d visited the petroglyphs years before, Enrique and I set out for La Concha just outside of La Huerta heading towards Autlán de Navarro where César remembered the petroglyphs were located in a rocky ridge that rises up from the valley floor. Approaching the site from the highway we saw the ridge, the part we were looking for still intact, rising up through dense jungle foliage surrounded by sugar cane fields. The early morning mist clinging to the tops of the trees gave the rocks of the ridge rising above them a surreal quality, like an ancient fortress glimpsed through the mists of time, surely this must be the place. rumores acerca de los increíbles petroglifos cerca de La Huerta por la carretera 80, a más o menos 50 km de distancia de Barra de Navidad y Melaque. Se ha dicho que uno era una figura con un casco que le daba apariencia de extraterrestre y que todas las fotos del sitio nunca salían reveladas – salían en blanco. Luego surgió un nuevo rumor, un rumor que contaba que los petroglifos habían sido destruidos por una explosión en una cantera de mármol ubicada en la misma cresta. Con la curiosidad de descubrir la verdad, eché mano a mi cámara digital y recluté a mi amigo César, quien había visitado hace años el sitio de los petroglifos. Enrique y yo partimos rumbo a La Concha en las afueras de La Huerta rumbo a Autlán de Navarro donde César recordaba haber visto los petroglifos en una cresta que se alza por encima del valle. Al acercarnos al lugar desde la carretera podíamos ver la cresta, con la parte que nos interesaba todavía intacta, alzándose por encima de la densa selva rodeada por campos de caña de azúcar. La neblina de la mañana que se apegaba a la cima de los árboles le dio un aspecto fantástico a las piedras de la cresta, como un viejo castillo visto a través de la neblina del tiempo. pg. 7 other side of the narrow dirt road. With the engine shut off, the only sounds we heard were the birds and water dripping off the leaves under the heavy jungle canopy above us. We could make out a faint trail through the dense bush and followed it, climbing up through the trees, many growing right out of the rocks that form the ridge. The trail winding through the trees and strewn with fallen leaves and marble ended abruptly at a sea of large boulders and slabs of rock, the cliff face we were looking for rising above them through the tree tops. Climbing up and over the rock slabs and boulders, being careful not to fall into or twist an ankle or leg in the many deep crevasses between them, we suddenly emerged from the cover of the trees and there, just above us, etched into the cliff face, was a happy smiling figure, arms and legs outstretched in what looked like a welcome greeting, with what looked like a page boy hair cut or a helmet on its head. This was the place! Looking to the right and above the helmeted figure we saw more petroglyphs etched into the rocks; geometric pg. 10

el lugar indicado. Después de estacionarnos a lado de un campo de caña de azúcar nos internamos en el denso bosque al otro lado del camino de tierra. Al apagar el motor sólamente se escuchaba el gotear del rocío de las hojas y el cantar de los pájaros. Pudimos percibir un camino entre la maleza y lo seguimos a través de los árboles que parecían brotar de la mismísima piedra que conformaba la cresta. El camino nos llevó a su abrupto fin en una caída de rocas sobre las cuales se alzaba el risco que veníamos buscando. Al montarnos encima de las rocas con mucho cuidado, ya que con facilidad te podrías torcer un tobillo entre ellas, de repente salimos desde los árboles y justo ahí, gravada en la fachada, vimos una figura sonriente con los brazos y las piernas extendidas como si nos estuviera dando la bienvenida y con un aspecto que parecía un corte de pelo redondo, o un casco en su cabeza. ¡Este sí era el lugar! Al mirar justo a la derecha y arriba de la figura con el casco vimos aun más petroglifos gravados en la piedra; símbolos geométricos, figuras con enormes pg. 10

10 pg. 8 symbols, figures with large heads and slender bodies that looked like snakes, leaf shaped carvings with lines running through them, circles containing crosses and what looked like flowers on stems. Going around the side of the crag to explore a large fissure that is about a meter wide in places and runs from the top to what we could see of the bottom of the cliff, we spooked an owl in a tree growing out of the rocks high above us. When the large bird took flight it spooked us as well and looking down to maintain our footing between the large boulders and slabs of rock we saw a helmeted figure much like the one that had looked so welcoming when we arrived carved into the slab of rock at our feet. Turning from our vantage point high above the trees we looked out towards the mist-shrouded hills on the other side of the valley and watched, awestruck, as an eagle soared high above us in the quiet morning sky like the guardian of this mystical and special place.

Cuando se dió a la fuga, el gran ave nos asustó de igual forma a nosotros, obligándonos a todos a mirar hacia abajo para no perder el piso sobre estas rocas y nos permitió observar otra figura parecida a la que habíamos visto desde el principio, dándonos la bienvenida al lugar, gravada en la piedra bajo nuestros pies. Desde nuestra posición por encima de los árboles nos volteamos hacia las colinas neblinosas al otro extremo del valle y miramos, asombrados, a un águila que volaba por encima de todo como un guardián de este místico lugar.

Cómo llegar...
Driving from La Huerta towards Autlán de Navarro, turn left off of highway 80, 6.5 kilometers from the last speedbump (tope) in La Huerta, just past the 210 km highway marker. Follow the dirt road 400 meters to the first fork.Take the left fork about another 200 meters until you come to a second fork.The entrance to the trailhead is in the woods, about 50 meters down from the second fork.The first part of the trail is easy but once you begin climbing the boulders and rock slabs, you will need good solid footwear.
En carro, desde La Huerta hacia Autlán de Navarro, cruza a la izquierda desde la carretera 80 a 6.5 km desde el ultimo tope en La Huerta, justo después del letrero del km 210. Sigue el camino de tierra por 400m hasta el primer cruce. Dobla a la izquierda y sigue por 200m hasta llegar al siguiente cruce. La entrada al camino está en el bosque a 50m del segundo cruce. La primera parte del camino es fácil pero una vez que empieces a montar las rocas necesitarás un calzado bien sólido.

A fledgling
marine turtle hatchling program run by two volunteer groups in Barra de Navidad is helping fledgling Olive Ridley turtles (known in Mexico as Golfina turtles) make their way to the sea. ECOBANA (Grupo Ecológico Barra de Navidad) and La Tortuga Negra, headed by local residents Ricardo Oregón Ruiz and Sergio Sánchez García respectively, operate a turtle hatchery on the Malecon in Barra de Navidad. ECOBANA, with a membership of 20 adult and 300 student volunteers, has a mandate to save the turtles today, through the boardwalk project, and for the future, through education and awareness. More than 1,500 tiny turtles have been released to the sea since the project began July 25, 2006 and the group currently has another 13,000 eggs incubating in the sand inside a protected area on the boardwalk in Barra de Navidad. Working together, volunteers from both groups collect the eggs from the beaches of Bahía de Navidad and from Playa de Cocos on Isla Navidad and deliver them to the site on the boardwalk in insulated containers. Four ECOBANA volunteers make up the team that pg. 14

ECOBANA (Grupo Ecológico Barra de Navidad) y La Tortuga Negra, dirigidos por residentes locales Ing. Ricardo Oregón Ruiz y Sergio Sánchez García respectivamente, operan un tortugario en el malecón de Barra de Navidad. ECOBANA, con una membresía de 20 adultos y 300 estudiantes voluntarios, tiene un mandato para salvar las tortugas a través del proyecto del malecón y para el futuro con educación y aumentando el conocimiento. Más de 1,500 tortuguitas han sido liberadas al mar desde el inicio del proyecto el 25 de Julio de 2006 y el grupo tiene unos 13,000 huevos incubándose en la arena de un área protegida del malecón en Barra de Navidad. Trabajando en conjunto, los voluntarios de ambos grupos recolectan los huevos de las playas de Bahía de Navidad y de Playa de Cocos en Isla de Navidad y los llevan al sitio del malecón en contenedores especiales. OLIVE RIDLEY Taxonomy Kingdom: Animalia Phylum and subphylum: Chordata Class and subclass: Reptilia Order and suborder: Chelonia Genus: Lepidochelys Species: olivacea Scientific name: Lepidochelys olivacea Other common names: In various parts of its range, the Olive Ridley sea turtle may also be called tortuga Golfina, tortuga Bestia, Manila, Mani, batali, Pacific Ridley, Warana, tortue Olivatre, Xibirro, Carpintera, penyu lipas, penyu rantau, and penyu abu abu. Reproduction Nesting usually occurs in aggregations called arribadas (meaning arrival) on mainland beaches during nights with strong winds. Specific nesting times vary with location. For example, nesting occurs year-round in Costa Rica, between June and July in Surinam, into August in Pacific Mexico, and from September to November in other areas of the east Pacific. Females usually nest in intervals ranging from 14 to 48 days, depositing 2 to 3 clutches of eggs. Food habits This species has been observed eating fish, crabs, snails, oysters, jellyfish, sea urchins, fish eggs, and vegetation. Olive ridleys are believed to be capable of feeding far offshore and forage at great depths. Predators Predators of adults are primarily man, sharks, and large cats such as jaguars and cougars on particular beaches. Hatchlings and/or eggs fall prey to man, crabs, birds, fish, and other mammals such as coyotes, pigs, coatimundi (raccoon-like carnivore), and feral dogs. Survivorship from eggs to adults is very low.

receive and bury the eggs, guard the nesting site day and night and maintain the hatchlings in a holding tank for 18 to 24 hours prior to releasing them to the sea. It is a small project. They plan to release 20,000 turtles in total for 2006, but with a survival rate of one or two per hundred that will mean another 200 to 400 turtles will survive to maturity and, just as importantly, through education and hands on experience, 300 students and their families will come to understand more about the importance of these endangered marine turtles.

Depredadores Los depredadores de tortugas adultas son primordialmente el hombre, tiburones y grandes gatos como el jaguar y pumas particularmente en algunas playas. En la temporada de la anidación los huevos son presa fácil del hombre, cangrejos, pájaros, peces y otros mamíferos como los coyotes, cerdos, coatimundo (criaturas parecidas a los mapaches) y perros salvajes. La probabilidad de supervivencia de los huevos para llegar a adultos es muy baja.

A s we rest for a few minutes, I look M ientras through the pine trees holding to the steep mountain side of the Sierra de Manantlán Ecological Reserve. An immense valley of green opens below me and abruptly rises to hills on the other side. We have just spent the last two hours riding 4x4s up from sea level to this view point, and we have yet to begin the most adventurous part of our trip. The Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra de Manantlan contains more than 139,500 hectares (344,712 acres) and is unique because of its altitude and close proximity to the coastline. Boasting 2,700 species of flora and 560 species of animal life, even wild horses and cattle can still be found within its boundaries. We set off from Manzanillo’s Santiago Plaza at early morning, excited by the chance to ride our off-road vehicles on a narrow cattle trail directly over the mountains and through the heart of the reserve. My friend, Polo Ramírez, an experienced outdoorsman, has arranged the necessary permit and reminded us that this is not an easy ride, even on a 4x4 quad. The first hour passes quickly as we wind our way on dirt back roads away from Manzanillo heading up pg. 18

Un inmenso valle verde se extiende debajo de mí y se alza repentinamente en colinas en el otro extremo. Hemos pasado las últimas 2 horas montados en unas 4x4, paseando desde el nivel de mar hasta este mirador y aún no hemos comenzado la parte más aventurera de nuestra odisea. La Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra de Manantlán contiene más de 139,500 hectáreas y es única por su altura y su proximidad a la costa. Con más de 2,700 especies de flora y 560 de fauna, se encuentran hasta caballos y vacas salvajes en la región. Salimos de la Plaza de Santiago en Manzanillo temprano por la mañana, emocionados por la oportunidad de pasear en nuestras 4x4 por un estrecho camino ganadero directamente por encima de las montañas y a través del corazón de la reserva. Mi amigo, Polo Ramírez, un excursionista experimentado ha arreglado este permiso especial y nos recuerda que no es un paseo fácil, aún en una cuatrimoto 4x4. La primera hora pasa rápidamente mientras paseamos por los caminos pg. 18
18 pg. 16 the Sierra Madre mountains. Huge tropical trees and vines shade our path as we splash through muddy puddles from the previous night’s rainstorm. We ride through a few small villages, a medium-sized river, and stop to dry ourselves and refuel in Cuzalapa. After a delicious country breakfast, we diverge from the dirt road and begin a quick climb into the hills of the Reserva, opening and closing rudimentary wooden gates along the way. After another hour of riding on a rocky trail over fallen tree limbs with a steep drop off on one side, I notice the cool wind blowing through the pine trees surrounding us, and stop to admire the valley below. As we get back on our vehicles and head towards the mountain peaks, the trail becomes noticeably more difficult to ride. We barely make it a steep climb up a 70meter grey pitch the texture of pottery clay, and continue around the ridgeline on pg. 28

Después de un delicioso desayuno campesino, nos desviamos del camino de tierra y empezamos a montarnos por la sierra de la Reserva, abriendo y cerrando los rústicos portones de madera en nuestro camino. Luego de una hora paseando por un camino rocoso lleno de árboles caídos y con una caída inclinada a un costado, percibo una refrescante brisa que nos sopla a través de los pinos y nos paramos a admirar la vista del valle. Al remontar nuestros vehículos nos dirigimos a la cima de las montañas y el camino se vuelve notablemente más pg. 28

the heavily-wooded path overgrown with moss clinging from the trees. Through the white mist, the deep dark greens of the forest are enhanced by a single red flower dangling above the trail. Rain clouds erupt above with a thunderous outburst, as the trail clears into rolling green hills dotted with boulders the size of cars. The trail meets up with another trail and soon we are on a ranch access road. We race toward the blue skies and sunshine below us in a large deep canyon leading down to a small pueblo at the bottom, trying unsuccessfully to outrun the rainstorm. Seven hours after leaving the coast of Manzanillo, Colima we find the small pueblo of El Chante, Jalisco, surrounded by fields of agave and zucchini. As we roll around the plaza on the cobblestone roads, we seek refuge from the rain in a corner store overlooking the main garden. From the beach to the high mountains and the other side we have seen some of the most beautiful and pristine landscapes in the world. General tips about exploring
Mexico on trails and backroads... 1. Close all gates- don’t let the cattle out! 2. Stick to the trail- Don’t damage the area off the trail, and don’t make new trails. 3. Do not litter – Leave no trace that you have been there, and keep the area clean for those in the future. 4. Be polite to the locals. You may just be passing by, but this is their life. Say hello and good bye. Your interaction will affect the way they feel about “outsiders”.

Visto a través de la neblina blanca, el verde del bosque se ve resaltado por el vibrante rojo de una solitaria flor que cuelga arriba de nuestras cabezas. Las nubes grises explotan con truenos mientras el camino nos lleva entre ondulantes colinas verdes salpicadas con rocas del tamaño de un carro. El camino se cruza con otro y de pronto estamos sobre un callejón de acceso a un rancho. Corriendo hacia el cielo azul y el brillo del sol que se percibe cuesta abajo, intentamos escaparnos de la tormenta que se nos viene encima. A siete horas de la costa de Manzanillo, Colima nos encontramos en el pueblito de El Chante, Jalisco, rodeados de campos de agave y calabaza. Llegamos a la plaza por las calles empedradas. Buscamos refugio de la lluvia bajo el techo de una tienda que da hacia el jardín principal. Desde la playa, por las montañas y hasta el otro lado, hemos visto algunos de los panoramas más hermosos y prístinos del mundo. Consejos generales sobre la exploración de
México a través de los caminos de tierra. 1. Cierra todos los portones – no dejes que se salga el ganado. 2. Mantente sobre el camino – No dañes el área fuera del camino y no hagas caminos nuevos. 3. No tires basura – No dejes rastros de tu presencia y mantén el área limpia para todos. 4. Sé cortés con los lugareños. Tú puedes estar de paseo pero ésta es su vida. Saluda y despídete. Tu interacción con ellos afectará su manera de sentirse hacia los visitantes.

La Gloria Escondida...
weekend a group of friends and I met to go visit La Gloria Escondida, an ecological reserve situated in the municipality of Minatitlán, in the northern part of the state of Colima. Taking highway 98 in the direction of Minatitlán, a picturesque little town nestled in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains, we came across several villages that were surrounded by palm groves. As we went along, the vegetation kept changing and we ended up on a place that was surrounded by jungle and by rivers that transform into majestic waterfalls such as the one known as El Salto. We ventured off to the Agua Fría community along a narrow unpaved highway for 30 minutes. Upon arrival we were welcomed by the person in charge, Sr. Efrén Quiñones. He explained to us that La Gloria Escondida is an ecological reserve dedicated to the conservation of the natural habitat of species of wild animals such as the white-tailed deer. Interaction with nature is encouraged through camping allowing the reserve to be maintained while fostering an understanding of what takes place there. La Gloria Escondida belongs to the units dedicated to fostering and conserving wildlife (UMAS) that are established by the federal government. The objective is to generate a sustainable exploitation of the white-tailed deer, take advantage of its products for commercial use, raise the deer in captivity and return two deer to their natural habitat pg. 42 each year.

nos reunimos para ir a conocer La Gloria Escondida, una reserva ecológica situada en el municipio de Minatitlán, al norte del estado de Colima. Tomamos la carretera federal No.98 con rumbo a Minatitlán, un pintoresco pueblito enclavado en las faldas de la Sierra Madre Occidental. A su paso nos encontramos varios pueblos campesinos rodeados de palmeras. Conforme avanzábamos la vegetación fue cambiando y terminamos en un lugar rodeado de jungla y ríos que formaban hermosas cascadas como la de El Salto. Nos dirigimos a la comunidad de Agua Fría, a 30 min. por una estrecha carretera de terracería. Al llegar nos recibió el encargado, el Sr. Efrén Quiñones, quien explicó que La Gloria Escondida es una reserva ecológica dedicada a la conservación del hábitat natural de especies silvestres, como el Venado Cola Blanca, donde se fomenta el campismo, que permite el mantenimiento de la reserva. La Gloria Escondida pertenece a las UMAS (Unidad de Conservación y Aprovechamiento de Fauna) establecidas por el gobierno federal. El objetivo es generar una explotación sustentable del venado cola blanca, aprovechar las bondades del venado para su explotación comercial, producir venado en cautiverio y reintegrar dos venados por año a su hábitat natural. During our stay we saw four deer and a flock of Cornish game hens. This place was built with the idea in mind that visitors could come to understand the importance of the reserve without having to go as far as the natural habitat of the deer. After enjoying the regional fruit in Cabeza de Negro, we headed for the UMA Extensiva, an area that encompasses 500 hectares of protected forest that is home to almost 70 deer. With some on horseback and others on foot, for two hours we climbed the road into the hills all the while appreciating the splendor that was our surroundings. We arrived at a cabin with water where we were protected from the cold and from the wild cats that come around at night. After settling in we took a walk in the area surrounding the cabin site and we were surprised to find that we were situated between two breathtaking sites. On one side there was a beautiful waterfall and on the other a 300 meter cliff. Sitting by the campfire in the evening close to the cabin we sang and enjoyed ourselves. The next day we took a tour of the reserve, climbed the cliff to get the best view of the countryside and on that cliff we understand the meaning of glory, a glory that is well hidden for the well being of the deer it is protecting.

Este lugar fue construido para que los visitantes puedan comprender la importancia de la reserva sin que tengan que trasladarse hasta el hábitat natural del venado. Después de disfrutar fruta típica en Cabeza de Negro, nos dirigimos a la UMA Extensiva la cual abarca 500 hectáreas de bosque protegidas donde se encuentra una población de casi 70 venados. Montados en caballos y otros a pie recorrimos cerca de 2 horas, subiendo el cerro y apreciando la naturaleza que alrededor se encontraba. Llegamos a una hermosa cabaña con agua, donde nos protegimos del frío y los felinos que rondan por ahí durante la noche. Después de instalarnos dimos un recorrido alrededor de la cabaña y nos sorprendimos al ver que estábamos justo en medio de dos impactantes escenarios, por un lado una hermosa cascada y del otro un risco de más de 300 metros de altura. Durante la noche hicimos una fogata cerca de la cabaña, cantamos y nos divertimos. Al día siguiente recorrimos la reserva, escalamos el risco para admirar el paisaje y justo ahí supimos lo que significa estar en la gloria, una gloria que está bien escondida para bien de los venados.

museums, the Mexican Pacific is a vibrant landscape of natural, colonial and historical beauty. Here are some highlights: La Boquita—This local beach at the north end of Santiago Bay inside the Club Santiago complex is lined with modest beachfront restaurants and is the ideal place to play on the gold-specked beach and sample local flavors from seafood to tropical fruit and coconuts. Peña Blanca—Just north of Manzanillo along the coast lies an isolated stretch of sand save for a few rickety uninhabited palapas that provide respite from the scorching sun. A huge rock rising out of the ocean provides home to thousands of seabirds whose droppings painted the landmark white and earned its name. Cuastecomates—A short drive from Melaque toward the north leads visitors to a quiet pueblito with dark sand, smooth surfshined rocks, some good surfing and excellent snorkeling to the south end of the bay.

Cuastecomates—A tan sólo minutos de Melaque hacia el norte nos encontramos con un pueblito tranquilo con playas oscuras, piedras alisadas por el mar y buenas oportunidades para surfear y esnorquelear en el extremo sur de la bahía.
