Like so many of the dusty towns-turnedtourist destinations along the Costalegre – the ragged, cliff-lined coast between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo – La Manzanilla and Boca were once tiny fishing villages that sat on opposite ends of a bay on the southern tip of Tenacatita Bay. Both towns are bordered by heavy jungle and thick mangroves, which are delicate ecosystems that support an abundance of terrestrial and aquatic species. From the waters surrounding healthy mangrove systems to the safe haven among their branches to the tips of their treetops, a plethora of plant, insect, bird, mammal and reptilian species rely on them for survival. The deep, acidic, moist soil surrounding and underlying the mangroves is rich in organic matter and very productive. Large communities of invertebrates feed on the organic matter deposited at the base of mangroves. Migratory birds also find shelter and security in their woven branches. Mangrove trees are unique in their ability to remove excess salt from the water in which they thrive – enabling them to live
their entire lives in a saltwater environment. Because they grow so close together, their roots and branches become large nets that work as filters letting water flow but stopping harmful sediments that damage reefs. Thus, they help protect the coastline from erosion, storm damage, and wave action while providing a habitat for crocodiles, herons, key nursery areas for fish and other wildlife. 10 pg. have sprung up to the south end of the bay in La Manzanilla as well as back in the jungle-covered cliffside. Other signs the town is blossoming? An Asian fusion restaurant, a thriving arts scene led by a modern New York-style gallery showcasing local Mexican and foreign artists, a community center featuring yoga classes, foreign film screenings, and shopkeepers who test their English skills with increasing confidence. Social conscience initiatives led by expats include a fledgling recycling program, as well as free spaying and neutering campaigns for dogs and cats. During the summer, these two beaches are relatively unpopulated expanses dotted with palm trees and palapas, providing the perfect spot for quiet relaxation, snorkeling, camping and meditation. Winter months see the towns come to life attracting a large community of North Americans to campsites near the lagoon in La Manzanilla and in Boca de Iguanas, where people set up along the wide creamy sands in their mobile homes. The sand in the bay is fine and smooth, and the tides extend in waist-deep shallows for nearly 50 feet. At the north end of the beach, in Boca de Iguanas, explore the cave carved into the rock face that shelters a small alter to the Virgin Mary adorned with shells, candles and other offerings.

Saving Mexico’s last dinosaur...
Salvando al último dinosaurio de México...
I f you have the feeling while S i alguna vez has estado reposando debajo de una lazing under a palm tree that you’re not alone chances are you’re right. The tropical zone blanketing Colima and Jalisco is home to what might be considered the dinosaur’s last remaining relative: the green iguana. The green iguana is found from Sinaloa, Mexico to tropical South America, normally at lower altitudes where temperatures are warm enough for their cold-blooded bodies. With their sharp claws for climbing, these iguanas normally live in trees, high up in the forest canopy, where they have access to ample food and sunlight. They are herbivores as adults and eat leaves, soft fruit, plant shoots and flowers – a favorite snack is the red hibiscus. Juvenile green iguanas have a higher protein requirement than adults and supplement their diet with spiders and other insects. Green iguanas in the wild come down from the trees mostly only to lay their eggs though they like to live near water and are good pg. 16

16 pg. 15 swimmers. The reproduction cycle here begins in January and about 65 days after mating the female will lay from 10 to 70 eggs in a burrow 45 cm to one meter in depth. The eggs incubate for 90 to 120 days and, while the female may return to the nest site during the incubation, she does not remain to guard it. The mortality risk for green iguanas, which reach maturity at two or three years of age and can grow up to six feet long, is highest in their first year of life, when natural predators abound. For those that survive infancy, the main predators for adult iguanas are humans. There are seven species of black iguanas, also knows as spiny tailed iguanas, listed on the Mexican National Institute of Ecology’s official list of species at risk. However, due to many factors such as destruction of habitat, indiscriminate hunting for the meat and the skin and traffic in iguanas for sale as pets both for the export market and here in Mexico, all of the species of iguanas in Mexico including the green iguana are in some danger of extinction. The iguana is to some extent a protected animal in the states of Colima and Jalisco but this is not true of all states in Mexico. While there is no active program in place for iguana conservation in the Costalegre, an iguanario at the Ecological Center of Cuyutlån about 45 minutes south of Manzanillo allows the study of green iguanas and raises them in captivity. Dr. Maria Cruz Rivera Rodriguez of the center says future plans include a program to breed the green iguana in captivity and, as they do with the sea turtle hatchery now, reintroduce the species to the wild. Los huevos se incuban durante 90 a 120 días y, aunque podría regresar al sitio de su nido durante la incubación, la hembra no se queda a cuidarlo. El riesgo de la mortalidad para la iguana verde, es más alto en su primer año de vida cuando sus depredadores naturales abundan. Llegan a la madurez a los dos o tres años de edad y pueden llegar a medir hasta 2 metros en algunos casos. Para los que sobrevivan la infancia, los mayores depredadores de las iguanas adultas son los seres humanos. Hay siete especies de iguanas negras, también conocidas como iguanas de cola espinada, en la lista de especies en peligro de extinción del Instituto Nacional Mexicano de la Ecología. Sin embargo, debido a muchos factores tales como la destrucción de su hábitat natural, la cacería indiscriminada por su piel y su carne y la venta de iguanas como mascotas, tanto para exportación como para el mercado nacional, todas las especies de iguanas en México, incluyendo la iguana verde están en algún peligro de extinción. Hasta cierto punto la iguana es un animal protegido en los estados de Colima y Jalisco pero esto no es verdad en todo México. Aunque no hay ningún programa activo para conservar la iguana en la Costalegre, en el Centro Ecológico de Cuyutlán, a 45 minutos al sur de Manzanillo se opera un iguanario donde se estudian las iguanas verdes y las crían en cautiverio. La doctora María Cruz Rivera Rodríguez del centro dice que sus planes para el futuro incluyen un programa para criar la iguana verde como hacen ahora con la tortuga marina y reintroducirla a su hábitat natural. What can the rest of us do to protect iguanas? Don’t purchase iguanas for pets or buy products such as belts, boots or wallets made from iguana skins. Always respect iguanas in their natural habitat and encourage others to do the same.

We still had not really tested the full capabilities of the ATVs but we got the chance once we emerged from the jungle. We were greeted by a dramatic vista: an enormous, remote beach stretched out before us and on the horizon, the ocean and the rock formation which gives the site its name, Peña Blanca. Accelerating down to the beach, we enjoyed the feeling of the fresh air on our faces as we jumped the miniature dunes and enjoyed another spectacular pg. 28

28 pg. 24 Mexican Pacific sunset which, despite the adrenaline of the moment, was just as serene and stunning as any. The excitement was not done yet as we followed Oscar up a small slope. Our surprise upon arrival was the steep dropoff after the peak and the challenge of the steep descent to the flats below, where we took a break. Some of us took the time to cool off with a drink of fresh water while others continued to go up and down the hill, testing their ATVs to the limit and frolicking along the beach in the fading rays of the sun.

Al llegar ahí la sorpresa fue que, del otro lado, no había más camino sino unas empinadas bajadas por donde teníamos que pasar y abajo un plano donde nos estacionamos un rato. Algunos aprovechamos para refrescarnos y tomar agua y otros seguimos subiendo y bajando, saltando y probando la potencia de las motos a lo largo de la playa mientras los últimos rayos del sol nos calentaban con la tenue luz del atardecer.

myths & legends/mitos y leyendas Ancient guardians Throughout the state of Colima and most prominently in Colima city, sculptures, statuettes and paintings of two pre-Hispanic dogs embracing in a dance can be found. Typically clay-colored or made of clay, they are physical legacies of an ancient Aztec legend that says that even if people are good citizens in their present life, without a dog to escort them into and through the afterlife, they are permanently doomed to the valley of darkness. But not just any dog will do. The indigenous Nahuatl people who inhabited this region took company with a soft-spoken, hairless dog called the Xoloescuintle. It is rumored that these same figures, as well as the remains of real Xoloescuintle dogs, have been found in the tombs of those buried centuries ago in the region.
Guardianes ancestrales A través del estado de Colima y más especialmente en la ciudad, se pueden encontrar esculturas, estatuillas y pinturas de los dos perritos prehispánicos abrazados en una danza. Usualmente del color de la arcilla o hechos de arcilla, estas figuras son legados tangibles de una leyenda azteca que relata que aún cuando las personas sean buenos ciudadanos en la actualidad, sin un perro que los guíe a través del más allá al morir, estarán condenados para siempre a vagar perdidos en el valle de la oscuridad. Pero no cualquier canino puede hacer esta labor. Los indígenas Náhuatl, quienes habitaron esta zona, adoptaron a este perro sin pelo, llamado Xoloescuintle. Existen rumores de que estas mismas figuras, al igual que los restos de Xoloescuintles, han sido encontrados en las tumbas de aquellos que fueron sepultados hace cientos de años en la región.

siboli Name: Arturo Valenzuela León “Siboli” Born in: México, D.F., on February 13th, 1971 Occupation: Graphic and Crafts Designer, specialized in jewelry design What he likes the most: “I love to surf. I usually go to La Ticla, in Michoacán. I have been practicing since I was 3 years old. But my true passion is the love I have for my daughters. I like El Tecuan beach and Olas Altas.” Arturo graduated from la UNIVA in Guadalajara, with a degree in Graphic Design. He has studied several areas such as painting, engraving, photography, stained glass, and more. From the age of 17, Siboli, has dedicated himself to designing and crafting jewelry. His work has been seen around the country, in the
USA, Ecuador and Switzerland. At the moment, his newest exhibition is being shown on Lampeduza island in the south of Italy. The exhibit is based on his studies on the artistic, graphic design of the Huichol ethnic group. “Siboli” means tadpole in the mayo language. "That’s what my grandfather called me when he saw me for the first time and it left a mark on me forever. My dedication to jewelry has been a long road. My father used to test me so I could find out if this was what I wanted to do. He didn’t support me very much but then he would occasionally show up with a pair of clamps or other tool for my work." After having heard stories about the city
of Colima, located about 90 minutes inland from the port town of Manzanillo through fertile fruit groves enriched by the twin volcanoes, I had to find out for myself if this was truly a magical city. Was the capital of our tiny state really that pretty, that interesting? In a word, Colima is captivating. Downtown Colima, the true center, is only four blocks in either direction of the central plaza. I decided to explore and set out on a little walking tour, starting with a visit to the Tourist Information Office housed in the Palacio de Gobierno, the main offices of the Governor of Colima. Armed with a map and a camera, I set off in the direction of the Nuñez Garden. Historically a plaza frequented by the Lira Colimense orchestra, the square is a site famous for local fairs and has a long history of holding many a romantic serenade. From there I headed for the pg. 56
historias acerca de la ciudad de Colima, ubicada a 90 minutos del puerto de Manzanillo, tras una carretera rodeada de huertas frutales, enaltecidas por volcanes gemelos, sentí la obligación de descubrir si realmente era una ciudad mágica. ¿Era así de bonita la capital de nuestro pequeño estado? ¿Así de interesante? Sin más que decir, Colima es cautivante. El centro de Colima, el verdadero centro, son solamente cuatro cuadras que se extienden por ambos lados de la plaza central. Decidí explorarlo caminando, empezando con una visita a las Oficinas de Información Turística en el Palacio de Gobierno, las oficinas principales del gobernador de Colima. Equipada con mi mapa y mi cámara, partí rumbo al Jardín Nuñez. Históricamente una plaza frecuentada por la orquesta Lira Colimense, es conocida como la sede de ferias locales y tiene una larga historia como el lugar de serenatas románticas. Desde ahí continué al Museo de Historia Regional, antes conocido como el sitio del Hotel Casino. El museo está ubicado en una hermosa casa grande que ha sido respetuosamente restaurada. 56 pg. 55 Regional History Museum, formerly known as the site of the Hotel Casino, and housed in a beautiful, respectfully restored, grand home. While the museum hosts a rotating series of collections, its current main exhibits are the Mesoamerican and Western Mexican artifacts, cultural and naturally-occurring pieces from the region’s volcanoes, and a tribute to the roots of the local indigenous people. Another nearby museum and must see is the Pinacoteca Universitaria “Alfonso Michel”. As with the Regional History Museum, the Universidad de Colima curates the Pinacoteca Universitaria, which is just a short hop from the main plaza. Housed in several of the old colonial homes, the architecture in itself is worth the visit. Wandering in and out of the rooms surrounding the central patios, enjoying the collections of artifacts and paintings, it was easy to see why this museum is so highly regarded among historians and tourists alike. Taking the pedestrian shopping alleys back to the main square allowed me to shop for local souvenirs to add to my collection of items that I had found in the shops behind the main cathedral. The cathedral, a neoclassical structure of cantera rock, was abuzz with Sunday activities with tourists and pg. 58

Otro museo cercano al que no se puede faltar es el de la Pinacoteca Universitaria “Alfonso Michel”. Así como el Museo de Historia Regional, la Pinacoteca Universitaria está a cargo de la Universidad de Colima y se sitúa a sólo unos pasos de la plaza central. Rodeada de varias de las casas antiguas de la ciudad de Colima, la misma arquitectura hace valer la visita. Paseando por los cuartos que rodean el patio central, disfrutando de la colección de artefactos y pinturas, era fácil de entender por qué este museo es tan valorado por históricos y turistas de igual manera. El regreso por los callejones peatonales de tiendas hasta la plaza central me permitió buscar y comprar recuerdos locales de todas variedades para aumentar mi colección de artículos que había encontrado en las tiendas detrás de la catedral principal. La catedral, una estructura neoclásica de roca cantera, estaba llena de actividad dominguera, con tanto turistas como creyentes deteniéndose para observar la impresionante atmósfera histórica, los murales del reconocido pintor pg. 59

pg. 56 worshippers alike stopping to take in the impressive, historical atmosphere and rich murals of the renowned painter Jorge Chávez Carrillo inside. Outside people browsed the lively food and souvenir stands, joining families that were spending a lazy afternoon together. A quaint kiosk in the center of the main plaza provided the ideal backdrop for little girls posing for photos of their first communion and couples meeting to spend a romantic evening. Surrounding the kiosk on the many benches among the gardens and trees were townspeople having their shoes shined, relaxing with the Sunday paper or visiting with long-time friends.
There was no shortage of spots to sit at a café and watch the goings on at the heart of this beautiful little city thanks to a host of restaurants, soda fountains, ice cream shops and hotels that ring the square. I topped the afternoon off with a visit to the “piedra lisa” – or smooth, sliding rock in English -- and slid down its flat surface, guaranteeing my return to Colima some day, if the common folklore holds true. Though I’ll have to leave the visit to the other museums and parks for another day, I was heartened by the idea that I will return some day. Having slid down the smooth rock and stowed my maps in a safe place, I’ll look forward to my next visit to the enchanting city of Colima.

Un paseo por la plaza principal revela un kiosco antiguo en el centro donde las niñitas se toman fotos de su primera comunión y donde las parejas se encuentran para pasar una tarde romántica juntos. Rodeando el kiosco en las numerosas bancas, entre los jardines y árboles, se hallan los habitantes del pueblo que han venido a bolearse los zapatos, relajarse con el periódico del domingo o visitar a sus grandes amigos. Alrededor de la plaza una gran variedad de restaurantes, fuentes de soda, heladerías y hoteles se pueden encontrar. Es el lugar perfecto para sentarse a tomar
un café y mirar lo que sucede en el corazón de esta hermosa ciudad. Lo que faltaba para terminar la tarde en grande era una visita a la piedra lisa para deslizarme por su superficie, acto que garantizaría mi regreso a Colima algún día, según dice la leyenda local. La plaza donde se encuentra la legendaria roca es otro destino vibrante donde las familias pueden pasar unas horas jugando en el área de niños o disfrutando de las delicias locales de los puestos cercanos. Aunque tendré que dejar mis planes para visitar los numerosos parques y museos que faltaron para otra ocasión, me siento alentada por la idea de regresar algún día. Habiéndome deslizado por la piedra lisa y guardados mis mapas en un lugar seguro, esperaré con anticipación mi próxima visita a la encantadora ciudad de Colima.

Aquí señalamos algunas atracciones: Villa de Álvarez—A sólo 10 minutos de Comala, este pueblo colonial es conocido por su festival de toros anual, considerado como el más viejo en el suroeste de México y presume delicias como el pozole, sopitos y tamales hechos tradicionalmente. Los Cafetales—En los fértiles valles alrededor de Colima, abundan los aromáticos granos arábigos. Alguna vez una de las principales fuentes de exportación del estado, muchas fincas en los alrededores de Suchitlán aun tienen plantaciones de cafetos y cosechan sus granos para preparar un café rico y humeante. La Centinela—Separado por una empinada arena, el océano se encuentra con el conjunto de laguna Centinela que empieza al norte del aeropuerto y sigue hasta Barra de Navidad. Los que gustan del kayak y los exploradores que buscan acampar pueden ver muchas especies de aves y extraños cocodrilos.
