EDITOR’S LETTER I have come to an era in my lifetime where I’m figuring out what my views are of the world in which we live, what I believe in and what I want to stand for as an individual. Being on this journey, I feel both grateful and humbled to have met many different characters and creative artists over the last year who have all in some way had an influence on my vision. After revisiting the UK, to set my sights on the latest Autumn Winter collections from an incredibly talented rota of designers and fashion houses, I am completely inspired by the power of fashion and art. Overwhelmed by the atmosphere and energy in the city, it really struck me while I was sitting across from four packed out rows of press, buyers, bloggers and celebrities. Fashion has unlimited power of the people! It’s how we define each other, how impressions are made, how we position ourselves in a certain group. Fashion repeatedly links thousands of people from all different kinds of cultures, countries and ages. It brings people together to share and celebrate a common passion. The power of fashion remains steady and continues to grow and it’s a movement that you need to be a part of. Get involved.

Inspiration is sometimes hard to find and when you feel like you can’t get your outfit as on point as you’d like, you look to others and search for ideas that could work with your style, right? That’s what leads us to this issue’s trending article. I’m going to focus on five fashion bloggers worldwide who use Instagram as a work platform and who can give you that push when it comes to vision.

JOSH STLEDGER Twitter @josh_stledger Instagram @JOSHSTLEDGER

ELAY NEAL MOSES First is Elay Neal Moses, an 18-year old blogger from Zurich whose bio reads: I’m kind of a big deal on a fairly irrelevant social media site that falsely inflates my ego. As egotistical as that might seem, it’s true! He is That Guy who made the man-bun famous and everyone used his picture as a template for their ‘HairCut Goal’. Elay’s style is exactly what I personally enjoy, very new-age street with a vintage touch. He likes to incorporate washed colours with denim and always adds a hint of rugged to his outfits.

JOEL MCLOUGHLIN Our second choice is Joel McLoughlin, a.k.a. Gallucks. Joel is a fashion blogger, YouTuber, and stylist. His style mostly consists of black, grey and white which gives him his distinct look. As we move down his feed, we see he’s keen to show people his distinctive and very grunge, chic looks. Joel carries unique vibes and likes to incorporate big hats and big coats to his outfits.

10

- FASHION -

SMIZEDIVAT The next blogger we move to is the polar opposite of Joel McLoughlin and goes by SmizeDivat. He’s a fashion stylist and most importantly a fashion enthusiast. He has a very chic street style and likes to combine designer and high street brands, giving him his own statement look. His outfits are clean and polished and he wears them in a cool, unique way. You’ll definitely notice the statement piece he picks from his wardrobe each day.

IVAN CHANG Next up we have Ivan Chang. His Instagram identity is IVAN_ CHANG1007 and he writes: I love UK style – and right he does! We can see from first glance he has a very urban street style but it’s mixed with a twist of high fashion. He has this trademark piece which is a big fedora style hat. He wears it with nearly every outfit and it works – hats are not easy to pull off! He wears long coats giving him that chic touch but he mixes it up by putting cool shoes with socks, and wacky scarfs with crazy prints. He really does know how to piece great urban outfits together so check him out!

KEVIN ELEZAJ The final blogger we’re going to look at is Kevin Elezaj. His Instagram name simply is KEVINELEZAI. When we begin to scroll through his feed we see straightaway a casual yet relaxed character. He always has an oversized element to his outfit, constantly on the go and travels a lot, another excuse to have sick back packs to go along with his cool style!

RAIN READY

Black geometric coat COS

LIGHTWEIGHT JACKETS FOR MEN ARE ACTUALLY A RATHER FORMIDABLE FASHION ENTITY OF THEIR OWN.

For most fashion savvy fellows the world over who live in relatively normal climates, new seasons herald the chance of fresh fashion choices and sartorial staples, all tailored to their originally intended seasonal purposes. However, MFI readers, in case you haven’t noticed, we live in Ireland. AW? Rain. SS? You guessed it, rain. Indeed, winter wools and summer sorbets simply cannot escape the perpetual prowess of our Irish weather, much to the disdain of our daily ensembles. However, it need not be all doom and gloom. While the mere thought of ‘rain’ jackets immediately heralds flashbacks of standing under that €10 rain poncho in Croke Park, lightweight jackets for men are actually a rather formidable fashion entity of their own. Take, for example, the humble Mac. While classic beige and camel versions make fabulous style statements for Spring, a navy, waterproof Mac can look sublime over a tailored suit coupled with a bold, black briefcase and brogues (and optional brolly, of course). The high street has a number of such pieces on offer all year round, with slim fit styles available from Topman in a number of colours, and H&M and River Island offering aesthetically appealing (and affordable) outerwear for every transitional tastebud. For those who wish to make an investment that will leave them not only dry but also dapper come rain hail or shine, look no further than M&S. Their well cut pieces offer a tailored fit at a relatively reasonable price, and present an inherently masculine finish to any look. Of course, should that year-round rain prove too perverse to pound the pavements, a chic cover up is a mere

14

click away – if the latest offerings from boohoo.com are anything to go by. Their SS15 collection offers a fresh take on many closet classics, while still staying true to the brand’s aesthetically youthful approach. A personal favourite of mine has got to be this bold blue hooded jacket with contrast yellow lining. Ideal with black skinny jeans, a fuss free knit, a simple beanie and your favourite trainers on chillier days, this jacket would be equally divine as part of a statement summer look: white shorts, white polo tee, yellow socks and blue brogues, anyone? However, should bright blue not be your choix de couleur, why not opt for the utilitarian feel of an army green collarless creation? Offering a longer length on the classic bomber, this is the perfect transseasonal cover up, and will allow you to combat any blustery blues our fair isle may throw your way. Ideal with trainers and slim fit joggers for a laid back sports luxe feel, this could also translate rather handsomely into a more grown up affair, simply by contrasting some textures – why not layer over tweed pants, leather lace ups and a shirt/woven-tie combo for a new spin on heritage chic? Finish with a vintage leather back pack and you’re rain ready. So gentlemen, what’s your ideal outerwear for our unpredictable Irish weather? Are you a ‘one-jacket-fits-all’ kind of guy, or do you have a variety of fash-fabulous options to hand at all times? Or, do you resign yourself to a soggy sartorial fate, and just blame it on the weatherman? (Apologies, I simply couldn’t resist).

SPRING SUMMER 2015

THIS SEASON, TAKE A CHANCE AND TRY A CUT YOU’VE BEEN AVOIDING. BE ADVENTEROUS, SWITCH IT UP.

An old Irish phrase which has stuck with me since school is: a good start is half the work. 2015 is in its infancy and the days are slowly getting longer. We’re gearing up for Spring Summer 2015 and this year I’m making a committment to up my game when it comes to my Summer style. I find myself absolutely sorted when it comes to Winter gear – great warm coats and scarves, sturdy boots to keep me dry! But Spring Summer brings its own set of rules to follow and this season is no exception. The trends which walked down the catwalk for SS15 were as broad and varied as the types of guy who wear them! There’s something for everyone this season. So, dive in and join me in making an effort to acknowledge your style!

LUXE LOUNGING The first trend I want to explore will keep you dapper and comfortable even when temperatures are soaring. Luxe lounging involves wearing tailoring in a clever way. Materials become lighter and breathable but still well structured and sharp. Véronique Nichanian achieved this look perfectly for Hermès. The models walked in light suits, pants were cut a little looser and paired exclusively with slip on canvas or leather sneakers or leather sandals. Neat, tailored shorts were paired with suede bomber jackets or loose, light knits. Luxe lounging is about being dayoff preppy. Don’t just throw on a loose shirt, throw a colourful silk scarf underneath. You’re not at the office today but if you ran into an important contact you wouldn’t let yourself down.

BLUE AND GREEN SHOULD *ALWAYS* BE SEEN If there’s a colour for SS15, it’s green! This season many of the influential designers utilised deep greens and paired them with vibrant blue, to form their trend setting colour palette. In the past, this combo was actively avoided – I can hear my mother

16

saying: ‘Blue and green should never be seen!’ What got sent down the runways at the London Collections: Men showed that combined correctly, blues and greens are make a fresh, summery pairing. Hackett paired Mediterranean blue shorts with a sea foam green shirt to great effect and over at Dunhill long, light olive green overcoats over sky blue short shorts looked very urban guy heading to the beach!

VINTAGE FLORALS Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. But, wait! Yes, florals are back again and yes, it’s a bit of a cliché. But listen, this time they’re done differently. Leave your migraine-inducing Hawaiian shirts and brightly coloured floral graphic tees in storage this summer. If you’re doing florals this season, it’s all about the vintage florals – graphic printed tees with floral designs straight out of a Renaissance painting. Florals have been subdued and in this new twist, the prints are large but the colours are muted leading to quite a sophicated look. Alfred Dunhill included loose fitting floral shirts and shorts and Hentsch Man showed relaxed floral print chinos and in another look, a bomber jacket in the same print.

- FASHION -

DENIM IS THE NEW BLACK This season, denim is definitely still on the menu as a myriad of cuts, effects and styles walked down the runway. So whether you go for drain pipe light blue jeans cut off at the ankle à la Dior Homme, a distressed hole-laden pair like at AMI Alexandre Mattiussi, or a wide-legged pair so wide it’s nearly a skirt as seen at Yohji Yamamoto. And moving beyond jeans and denim shorts, Valentino sent a khaki jacket down its SS15 runway creatively adorned with butterfly patches and paired with dark blue denim. This season, take a chance and try a cut you’ve been avoiding. Be adventurous, switch it up. How badly wrong can you go with a pair of jeans?

DKNY SS15

Dolce & Gabbana have been following a Sicilian theme for a few years now and SS15 is no different. Taking influence from the 16th century Spanish occupation of Sicily, they sent modern-day matadors down the runway with silk-clad streetwear. The finale was a swarm of red silk suits, which was especially memorable for me. That fiery red lingered and a pop of red can be a really powerful accessory. Think of it like Christian Louboutin but clothing – comparing the pop of red from the silk lining of a suit to a pair of red-soled Louboutin sneakers.

Hackett SS15

CORMAC MCGARRY

DKNY SS15

When the SS15 collections showed last year I knew that this season would be a good one. The trends are there to be utilised but, as is nearly always the case with menswear, they are never so outlandish that they become instantly passé for the next season. This season doesn’t favour one type of guy over the other, so there’s something for everyone here. Don’t get stuck in the same summery rut or think that you can’t be stylish in Summer heat. Adapt. Make an effort. And always acknowledge your style.

Hackett SS15

Take Domenico and Stefano’s message literally and hunt down some red brightly coloured outerwear or alternatively use the subtle pop of this fiery, striking accessory.

SHOW ROOMS

Amidst all the commotion of the runway shows, LC:M also featured a more relaxed experience for show-goers. Its ‘ready-to-wear’ and ‘accessories’ presentations were open to all for the duration of the weekend. Focusing on function as well as fashion, the ready-to-wear presentation saw the first floor of the LC:M headquarters transformed into a walk-in wardrobe of sorts, with a series of rails displaying the top picks of AW collections from various designers, and allowing attendees the chance to get up close and personal with a whole host of fabulous Fall fashion. Each designer managed to punctuate the fluidity of the rooms with their own individual offerings, with Blood Brother providing a lesson in leather, and Alan Taylor allowing print to permeate his otherwise muted musings. Of course, as MFI knows, it’s all about the detail, and this most certainly was the case over in Victoria House. Outside the building’s runway show space, an entire area was dedicated to accessories, with designers from each section on hand to talk guests through the inspirational insights of their respective collections. From the three-tone brogues at Caterina Belluardo to the dapper directions of Dr Martens, shoes were a prominent feature in the accessories presentation. Socks, satchels and an array of timepieces also appealed to our sartorial senses, with each display whetting our appetites for an abundance of AW accessories.

SIBLING With hot pink teddy bears, candy coloured hair and paper bag boy-toys, the Sibling AW15 collection astounded LC:M attendees from start to flawless finish. Making a return to their hot pink roots, the design trio behind this innovative label succeeded in creating a truly indulgent aesthetic, where textures and silhouettes collided in a cupcake-meets-Ken doll fashion frenzy. A brown paper bag may not be the most elegant (or practical) foundation of choice for a garment, but the inclusion of such a trivial textile in the form of biker jackets, pants, and even an oversized teddy bear, reinforced the ideal that Sibling are all about offering an irreverent insight into the tickled pink modern man. Of course, Barbie would be immensely proud of her signature shade punctuating

34

the entire collection, with hot pink Chelsea boots, teddy bear brooches and shaggy outerwear all adorning a punk-pink haired army of models. With their juxtaposition of preppy diamond prints and deconstructed knits and logo emblazoned sweatshirts, the brand arguably succeeded in creating its own subculture on the runway, inviting showgoers to lose themselves in an L-shaped runway of pinstriped pink perfection. The ‘siblings’ in question bounded into the limelight post-finale with as much gusto and energy as the show that preceded them, cementing their prowess as the Mad Hatter mavens of LC:M. Who knew a brown paper bag could look so chic?

CRAIG GREEN On the final day, Craig Green revealed his second solo show at LC:M, through the Newgen initiative. A rising star in British fashion, the future is looking bright for emotive explorations in menswear. Green focused on uniform: tight silhouettes on the upper body with loose trousers in deep green, navy and black – much like

his previous collection. The colours swiftly changed to stark red and then back again to black and white jersey tops pulled tightly around the models. The show was set to poetic music from composer Wim Mertens and followed by Michael Nyman’s ‘Wheelbarrow Walk’. This created a quietly charged atmosphere in the

36

room, especially combined with the hush of the models’ bare-footed steps, appearing almost vulnerable in their movements. It completely captivated the audience and kept us on the edge of our seats.

MICHELLE WALSH Photographer Michelle Walsh

FEATURE SHOW

CHRISTOPHER SHANNON Liverpool-raised designer Christopher Shannon’s latest garments featured controversial slogans such as ‘Broken’ and ‘Save Me’, which were knitted into vibrantly coloured intarsia jumpers, while some of the models embraced the runway with striped plastic bags from the local corner shop covering their face.

Ready-to-wear, the street inspired collection consisted of waist lined puffa jackets, tracksuit bottoms with poppers, and loose sweatshirts – all staple trends for Shannon in AW15. Mesh trousers, monochrome skip bags and stick-on Fuzzy Felt also made an appearance on the catwalk, showing the unlimited

37

creativity of the London-based designer. Plastic bags aside though, Christopher Shannon is having a remarkable impact on menswear and it was a pleasure to witness the action firsthand.

KTZ With its reputation as a formidable fashion force, KTZ has always been a hotly anticipated feature of LC:M, and its AW15 offering most definitely failed to disappoint. Sticking to its steadfast aesthetic of spectacle and severity, the design house

punctuated the monochromatic palette of its latest collection with symmetrical prints and abstract outerwear. Bowler hats and utilitarian silhouettes recalled A Clockwork Orange realness, while fur trimmed hoods and portrait-patch emblazoned military jackets offered an eerily propagandist feel.

38

While some pieces teetered on the theatrical edge, the collection failed to fall into the costume category, maintaining a purposeful consistency that refused to veer away from its aesthetic assertion.

ASTRID ANDERSEN One show in particular that I was joyous to take a seat at this season was Londonbased brand, Astrid Andersen. While leading a generation in menswear, each piece of the sports-inspired collections is designed to offer comfort as well as the ultimate styling and quality – an uncompromised signature of its style. The show kicked off with an all-black

uniform look and the beefy models sporting army berets. Andersen spoke to iD Magazine backstage: It became a bit militant in the end. I just wanted to move on. For me, this season felt a little bit more mature – I don’t know if that translated, but at least that’s how I felt about it.

Along with appearances from rapper, Wiz Khalifa, and male supermodel, David Gandy, the Barbour fans also got to enjoy pieces from the brand’s Core Essentials range: khaki hues, camouflage prints and luxury quilting all flowed throughout the outwear styles.

SOULLAND We arrived to St. Georges’ church, Bloomsbury and were blown away by the powerful venue. As we walked up the steps, we began to hear elegant, live piano playing from inside the venue, the doors opened and the presentation really began. We were greeted by models who were dressed in statement pieces with ‘EXOTIC’ and ‘EROTIC’ printed on them standing in front of green rectangular structures

which resembled the invite. We were puzzled until we got the full rundown and idea behind the structures. All you needed was an iPhone and the Soulland app to get the full experience of the collection. The idea was that the green rectangular structures acted as green screens and as you held your phone in front of your favourite outfits, the

background would change into something you could only imagine! The collection had a great flow but stayed true to the brand by adding touches of raw edges and cool cut-outs. Soulland brought it this year and left us wanting more.

PRIVATE WHITE VC With its enviable location in the hustle and bustle of Central London, the Private White Presentation offered attendees an ambient and inviting atmosphere on Day One of LC:M. Models sported a series of refreshingly accessible sartorial selections, with each look staying faithful to the brand’s blend of heritage inspired

textures and dapper details. Structured outerwear of tweed and rich wool was given a luxe finish of fur and chic shearling, with subdued hues of olive green, burgundy, navy and grey – the perfect palette for the cohesive collection. Double breasted jackets

with statement lapels were just some of the many features that reinforced the fashionable functionality of each piece, with in-house tailors and seamstresses providing a subtle authenticity to the evening’s proceedings.

STREET ST YLE

In chilly January, the latest fashions flurried down the catwalk, but the cold didn’t stop the crowds gathering outside the venues to join in the atmosphere. Fashion’s darlings, entertainers and photographers wrapped up and joined the odd, bemused tourists on the streets of London – all hoping to catch a glimpse of glamour! The changeable weather meant covering up and occasionally running for shelter. Long overcoats, tweed with splashes of colour tucked into collars, and an array of hats provided an assortment of street style inspiration for the new year. In comparison to the women’s collections, which tends to bring out elements of the absurd, LC:M is a refined affair. The playful features of fashion appear in the details: pocket squares, pins and hats galore.

MEN AT WORK

BY COCO SMITH Anthony Remedy is a restaurant promoter and consultant currently working with San Lorenzos on South Great George’s Street. Anthony, we love your style at MFI! It’s effortless, cool and never boring. We particularly love your Givenchy Bambi t-shirt, but do you have a favourite piece in your wardrobe?

Anthony wears Wang x H&M sunglasses, Sandro leather jacket, Balenciaga t-shirt, River Island jeans, Nike runners

I do like to update my wardrobe with key statement pieces like the Bambi tee and I love the likes of my Rottweiler tee from Givenchy and my black studded hi-top Louboutins. But my favourite piece of clothing at the moment is a new purchase: a classic crombie military black Saint Laurent coat. Super cool and something I’ll wear for years to come. I’m all about investment pieces that last. You are without a doubt a label lover… we have spotted your best buys on your Instagram page. Why do you think men in general don’t mind buying less but spending more?

Blokes are less interested in browsing, more into buying. So, you buy less and spend more. Also, don’t kill me but cheap clothes look pretty cheap, as opposed to some cheaper clothes for women which can look swish and they can style them well. Girls buy clothes all the time that they don’t wear and then they sit in

their wardrobe with the tags still on, I wouldn’t spend a fiver on something I didn’t want. You definitely have your own sense of style and it stands out. How would you describe it?

I like both classic and trend-driven clothes. I buy bits of both. Which stores and brands do you mainly shop in and why?

In Dublin pretty much Brown Thomas, Harvey Nichols, Cos – they’ve all got a great range. Internet wise, matches.com, luisaviaroma, Mr Porter, ssense. Why? Good collection, good deals and good after-sales service. Your fianceé is Corina Gaffey, a well renowned Dublin stylist… Tell the truth, does she dress you or is it all your own doing?

Ha! I was buying Prada when she met me. What are your pet peeves in men’s styling?

I’m not into rip off stuff. Doesn’t bother me too much but I have no interest in buying fake clothes. What’s next on the shopping wish-list for SS15?

A Saint Laurent suit for my wedding actually!

If Ms. Monroe so infamously claimed that all she wore to bed was Chanel No. 5, then, gentlemen, the question ponders – what’s left when you strip away your aesthetic accoutrements? Fragrance has long been a tale of two sides for a considerable amount of men. Some barely pay any heed to that birthday-gifted bottle they scramble to find as they rush out the door, while others spend as much time selecting their signature scent as they would choosing a new season bag. I, for one, most definitely fall into the latter.

HEAVEN SCENT

Men’s fragrances are that one rare entity of elegance and style that herald as much variety and characteristics as that of their female counterparts, and there’s as much selection out there for men as there is for ladies. So gentlemen, with such superfluous styles on offer, how does one make that demanding decision about which scent to choose? First and foremost, it’s important to realise that everyone’s bodies take to fragrance in their own unique way. As a result, fragrance will always smell slightly different on everybody, especially after it’s settled on the skin for a few minutes. Thus, I would recommend trying a fragrance in store and smelling it on your skin a while later – that’s when you’ll get a real feel for the scent. Of course, with such extensive ranges to choose from, and with some fragrances being better suited to certain times of year, I’ve compiled my Top 3 fragrances to make that scent selection a little bit easier. First up is Issey Miyake’s original scent, L’eau d’Issey, which turns 21 this year.

64

With its fresh, citrusy and tingling sensation upon first application, it’s an ideal scent for summer; while its rich woody hue acts as the perfect winter companion. Next, we have the brother scent of Flowerbomb – the ever popular ladies’ fragrance. Spicebomb from Viktor and Rolf is a relatively new scent, but has already garnered a cult-like status since its shelf debut. Offering an almost effeminate sensuality that other men’s scents fail to project, Spicebomb is a daring, enticing and formidable scent, with its base notes of tobacco and leather culminating in an ultimately masculine aroma that sets it apart from its high-end fragrance peers. Also, special attention must be paid to the grenade shaped bottle and slick black glass finish – a fragrant feast for all the senses. Finally, the pièce de résistance of my fragrant favourites has got to be from that fabulous little haus known as Chanel and their powerhouse scent: Allure Homme Sport. With its gun grey hue and slim line silhouette, the bottle alone looks sublime in any toiletry bag, not to mention its incomparable aroma. Allure offers a welcome juxtaposition of fresh, sensual, woody and spicy elements to culminate in an immediately recognizable fragrance that exudes class, sensuality and prowess. Would we expect any less from Coco and co? So, there we have it! A trio of tantalizing scents that will see you through every season and situation with elegance, masculinity and class. Which will you choose?

I first encountered Connor SchellingTisza – sometimes known simply as Cocopops – in March 2012 following his SS12 runway appearance for the catwalk of Belfast Fashion Week. His blonde curly locks styled like an energetic surfer and his androgynous facial features were an instant crowd pleaser. I officially met Connor a few weeks later at my first behind the scenes fashion shoot where I documented the ins and outs of a printed t-shirt collection he was sporting and all the mayhem in between. It was a day of hilarity, excitement and all-round enthusiasm from the word ‘go’ and resulted in one of my highest read blog posts of the year! Since then, his face has appeared in Belfast’s Victoria Square, Remus Uomo and DV8 campaigns, Castlecourt billboards and Brown Thomas catwalks – to name but a few!

On January 3rd 2015, I got to personally style Connor in a high fashion editorial with emerging fashion photographer Mitchell Cahoon. He moved fluidly into pose after pose, perfectly executing the brief. It was amazing to watch especially considering Connor was once on his way to becoming a professional tennis player. However, following a shoulder injury he fell into a life of professional modelling. He first signed in Dublin, then London through Elite Models and eventually Milan. He has shot with Rankin at Hunger Magazine, as well as Versace Jeans and Fendi. Although, nothing could top his ultimate dream of landing a fragrance campaign or a role in a blockbuster movie – which could definitely be in the pipeline in Connor’s not too distant future as a result of a strict and disciplined work ethic and continuing to follow his instincts.

Connor throws himself one hundred and ten percent into every project, enjoys the perks of travelling, and lets his imaginative side loose by working alongside a bunch of creatives to put together what he calls ‘pieces of art’. This leaves very little time for a night out on the town but when he does he opts to wear something simple, classy and cool – loving everything Belstaff related. If he’s at home, his outfit of choice will more than likely involve his new Nike Flyknit trainers, possibly whilst cooking up a healthy storm and listening to Lana Del Rey’s ‘Gods & Monsters’. One thing’s for certain, Connor SchellingTisza has it all – the future looks bright for this Elite model!

DATE NIGHT DRESS CODE The day of love is upon us and for men that usually means a grandiose show of love and affection for his beloved. Whether the gesture is a fancy date to a beautiful restaurant or a hearty, homecooked meal, every eventuality requires the right attire for the show. For any further advice or if you have any questions or queries, feel free to drop me a message @TheStyleCouncilCork Facebook page.

JAMES MCDONALD

THE RESTAURANT This will generally involve a venue that requires a reservation. (Note: You will not be eating out on Valentine’s Night without a reservation, unless your date is a Big Mac fan!) It could then be followed by a trip to an intimate wine-bar. For this option, I would strongly recommend a suit. This shows your appreciation for the importance of the night. Dress the suit down by losing the work-tie and opening down at least two buttons to show your relaxed-yetmasculine side. Opt for a very simple shirt, so as not to draw attention away from your partner – leave the personality to the pocket square! Also, this may be a good time to invest in a brand-spanking new pair of smart shoes. Don’t ruin a first class outfit with withered and beaten shoes. Solid leather Oxfords or loafers are choice. But do break them in before the date!

A NIGHT ON THE TOWN This is a completely different affair altogether. Here, comfort is key – but don’t lose your natty edge! Keep in mind that you will be hitting several different arenas. The first bar, where the drinks will be civilised; the second bar, where the conversation becomes less sedate; and the third and beyond, where jaeger-bombs flow and the ‘social-smokers’ come out. Your first line of defence will be a pair of dark indigo denims – they are quite water-resistant and won’t show stains. The market is awash with trainers these days, so find a slightly smarter pair – preferably leather covered. Ditch the blazer for this one and get your Joey Ramone on with a leather jacket. This classic wardrobe staple is perfect for clubs and pubs.

HOME COOK HERO This option will be for the more classically romantic type, where you can set the ambiance to your own preference. Mood lighting, candles, rose petals, wine and some Barry White. If that’s got you hot and bothered, then this one’s for you. Make sure to stay fully clothed during preparation, cooking and dining. Wash hands thoroughly after handling chillis, it may give you and your date an unwanted spice sensation! The less buttons, the better here and the dessert is best served on a bearskin by the fire. A simple t-shirt and jeans will suffice for this indulgent evening.

JAMIE DORNAN

Jamie Dornan is off to an impressive start in 2015. With the second series of hit BBC show, The Fall, just finished and one of the most anticipated movies of the year on the way, Mr. Dornan will be a household name by December. Originally from Holywood in County Down, we wonder if he has always been destined for stardom? Not too long ago, Jamie Dornan was one of the highest-paid male models in the world. He was on contracts with Dior, Armani and Calvin Klein, so his personal achievements in the fashion industry are quite extensive. Making the transition from model to actor is never easy, but Jamie Dornan appeared on the small screen as the handsome Huntsman for 9 episodes on the American series: ‘Once Upon a Time.’ In August 2014, he caused a commotion when he joined Instagram by posting

78

a selfie with a hand written sign. And in January at the Golden Globes, he showcased his fashion chops in a sleek and stylish Louis Vuitton tux. Natural talent, easy humour, and dashing looks have won him legions of fans. Now living in London with his wife, Amelia Warner, and their child, his dayto-day style is less Calvin Klein underwear model, more handsome, successful actor. This February, he takes on the role of Christian Grey, the title role of the book that sold over 100 million copies worldwide. No pressure, then! Despite people’s initial reaction to the announcement (the serial killer? really?) their worries have been eased by the steamy trailer. Whatever else the film will show, Jamie Dornan’s suits are sure to be immaculate!
