A DAY IN THE LIFE Ian Wallace

MFI Magazine met Ian Wallace in Arnotts Department Store, Dublin a few weeks ago and we got to talking about men’s fashion. Ian has a drive for helping customers both male and female, find the perfect look, and we wanted to find out a little more about his role and how Ian operates on a daily basis. Originally from Cork, Ian began a temporary job working as a sales assistant in Topman, before being promoted to department manager of Topshop soon after. After meeting his girlfriend in Australia on a short trip, Ian and his new partner landed in Dublin on the way back, only to settle in with a transfer to Topman in Arnotts. Arnotts opened up many doors for Ian and his knowledge of style, moving on to become supervisor of concession in Mango where he has worked for the past year. Ian’s day in Arnotts starts off with an ice tea, an inbox of e-mails from the area manager and some daily visual merchandising. Then Ian takes a trip to the stock room to check for new lines and picks up some stock to hit the shop floor. ‘I’m a pretty friendly guy so I really like to engage people and help them , we sell a really wide range so we often have holiday shoppers, tourists, students, wedding parties and couples looking for the right shopping experience, so you have some conversation and do some shopping. It’s pretty fun.’ Preferably, Ian likes to shop for women, ‘I’m more comfortable talking to women and they want more advice from you as well, when it comes to womenswear I’ve got quite a broad view.’ Describing his style as colourful, fitted and nice buttons, Ian has also been growing his super cool afro for one year and three months. So that is a day in the life of personal shopper Ian Wallace, drop into Arnotts to see if he can find you that perfect outfit.

VISUAL TEES As it’s getting warmer for the summer, we need a good variety of visual T-shirts in our wardrobe. Choosing affordable summer clothes is a wise decision, because when the winter comes back around, they normally sit in the back of the wardrobe and gather up the musky dust. Here we picked some of the coolest T-shirts on the scene.

FUTURE FASHION The Limerick School of Art and Design Graduate Fashion Show is always thrilling event, pushing for new ideas and showcasing our newest emerging designers. This year was no exception with 27 students showing their work. Head of Fashion at LSAD, Anne Melinn said ‘This year’s students have experimented with colour, fabric and form and produced innovative concepts with excellent craftsmanship.’

“I think there is a lot to consider when designing for men and it’s all about the little details.”

Bord Gais sponsored the event on May 15th in Limerick’s unique Milk Market venue, with more than 500 guests in attendance. Paris-based Irish designer Sharon Wauchob was showing her current collection as part of the event. She also offered a 6 month placement bursary to Éadaoin Ní Drisceoil for her collection inspired by the novel, The Virgin Suicides. Limerick City of Culture was supporting the event as a mark of the college’s contribution to the city and the fashion industry in general. LSAD is one of the top 50 fashion schools in the world with graduates including Joanne Hynes, Una Burke and Danielle Romeril. Mike Fitzpatrick, Director of Limerick City of Culture, reminds us that ‘LSAD is the only Irish college selected to show at London Graduate Week in June so it is with huge pride that we introduce these graduates of 2014.’ This year, the Bord Gais Networks Award for Most Innovative Use of Fabric went to Caroline Martin, of Raheny Dublin, for her colourful unisex collection. Greta Lelyte was another student who presented a menswear collection. MFI talked to both designers about their inspiration and their plans for the future.

GRETA LELYTE

MICHELLE WALSH

When it came to my inspiration I started thinking about the idea of ‘coming-of-age’ and what it means to grow up and become an adult. I was looking at different cultures and religions and their coming-of-age rituals. I started focusing on Orthodox Jews and their laws of dressing and behaviour in public etc. Their beliefs are very holy and pure and I wanted to mix it up, so I focused on chavs, skinheads and heroin addicts. This would be my ‘rebel’ side of the concept. Since working at Aitor Throup last year, I knew straight away that my graduate collection would be a full menswear collection. I think there is a lot to consider when designing for men and it’s all about the little details. My collection is a mix of tailoring and sportswear. When I was still in the design process, I had a certain customer in mind, someone free and a little wild. Most of the garments in the collection are very contemporary but there are a lot of classical tailoring details. My dream is to study Masters in Menswear at the Royal College of Art in London and have my own business in a few years.

18 16

- FASHION -

CAROLINE MARTIN My collection was based on the surreal masks of Bertjan Pot. I wanted to recreate the vibrant and playful shapes and graphic colours of his artwork. Using the concept of African tribes, the mask is used as a ritual into adulthood. I wanted to explore the transition from childhood to maturity, including overwhelming silhouettes, tribal print, and playful knitwear. I tried to ignore gender specific silhouettes, instead I focused on oversized shapes and exaggerated forms to create designs for both sexes. I don’t generally have a specific customer when designing. It’s really exciting to see garments interpreted in different ways depending on size, age and gender. After college my plan is probably getting more experience in London, then hopefully setting up a knit streetwear brand!

MOVIE GUIDE We all love a good flick on a chilled summer evening, whether it’s on the comfort of your own couch or a trip to the cinema for that butter popcorn you just can’t make at home. Let’s find out what movies you can’t miss.

BAD NEIGHBOURS (RATED 16) Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play a recently settled couple who have just had a baby. Domesticated life seems to be bliss, until a college fraternity, led by the charismatic but dim Zac Efron, move in next door and start wrecking the neighbourhood. While initially appearing to hit it off, things go sour when the thirty something couple call the cops after a late night party at the frat gaff. Soon a battle of wills escalates, as a prank war quickly gets out of hand.

X-MEN : DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (RATED 12A) First things first: you’re going to want to watch all of the previous X-Men movies before wading into Days Of Future Past, as anyone coming into this franchise cold is going to be left utterly and helplessly bewildered. Kicking off in the future where giant mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels have effectively wiped out all of humanity, the few surviving X-Men manage to send Wolverine’s (Jackman) consciousness back into the past, to possess his own body in 1973. His mission is to stop Mystique (Lawrence) from murdering Bolivar Trask (Dinklage), the creator of the Sentinels, as killing him turns him into the martyr that gets the robots built en masse in the first place.

FRANK (RATED 15A) Jon (Gleeson) is a wannabe musician, possibly talented but painfully uninspired, who crosses paths with the band “Soronprfbs” – that’s not a spelling error, and it’s pronounced exactly as it’s spelt – just as their keyboardist is attempting to drown himself. Not seeing this as the warning it almost certainly is, Jon joins the band right before a gig, which ends violently within seconds of it starting. Looking for a return to creative surroundings, they head off to a remote cabin to record their new album in isolation. Oh, and the lead singer, Frank (Fassbender), is a potential genius and/or lunatic who never takes off his giant, paper-mache head.

ME. BY ME. TK MAXX LAUNCHES SPRING/SUMMER CAMPAIGN, ME. BY ME. STARRING ITS OWN SHOPPERS The new TK Maxx campaign features its own customers from across Europe, to represent the brand and inspire others to celebrate the wonderful things that make them unique. The campaign centres around the idea that people are at their happiest and most confident when they are their true selves. It aims to inspire shoppers to unlock their individuality and celebrate their own individual sense of style. Ten shoppers were cast from hundreds across stores spanning Ireland, UK, Poland and Germany and signed up to star in TK Maxx’s Me. By Me. campaign. 39 year old yoga teacher and interior designer Sarah Lafferty from Dundrum in Dublin was chosen as the lucky Irish cast member and joined a diverse range of TK Maxx shoppers. Check out what UK cast member Cameron had to say about the experience.

affordable and good quality. I don’t have a style icon in the classic sense but I really admire people like the comedian Bill Hicks because of his chilled style and attitude towards life.

Age 26 Occupation Paintballing Promoter Fact Cameron is originally from Australia and also spent part of his childhood living in Thailand.

What was great about the shoot was that we got to choose our own clothes, and I experimented with both casual styles and also smarter looks. At the shoot, I tried on clothes that I didn’t realise were ‘me’. Once I put them on, I really liked what I was wearing and found a new inner confidence

How did you get involved in the Me. By Me. project and what has the experience been like?

I was approached about auditioning for the Me. By Me. campaign whilst I was at work, I was intrigued so I went along to a casting. I really didn’t think that I stood a chance, so when I found out that I had been selected it felt really special, I couldn’t believe it! Going to Cape Town and taking part in the Me. By Me. project was an amazing experience from beginning to end.

What does Me. By Me. mean to you?

For me, it means having your own unique style and embracing your personality. Showing everyone who I am and believing in myself.

At first it was a little strange being in front of the camera and being given directions to unveil our individuality, but it felt great once I relaxed and was just ‘myself’. Before this, I had only ever been photographed for my little sister’s art project. It was a whole new experience, but I really enjoyed it and am so glad to have had the opportunity to be involved in the campaign.

Why should people get involved in Me. By Me.?

Who or what has shaped your style?

Not following the crowd and just being myself.

My style is really laid back; I think living in places like Australia and Thailand has really influenced my attitude towards what I wear. For me it’s important that what I wear is comfortable,

What are your loves?

Adopting that attitude of being yourself and celebrating your individualism is so important, it’s great that I am now part of a big campaign for just being myself. What is your Me. By Me.?

Skateboarding, travelling, hanging out in café’s with friends and good coffee.

- INTERVIEW -

DANIEL HOLFELD Irish born to German parents, Daniel Holfeld grew up in Ireland only to chase the sun through his lens. Having graduated with a BA [Hons] in photography, Daniel’s origins are based in fine art, initially exhibiting his work in the New York Photo Festival, followed by exhibitions in London and Paris. Now based in Europe he has worked on fashion and beauty commissions in locations such as Miami, Oman, Dubai, Morocco, Venice, Amsterdam and Paris. Daniel is set to continue his work globally, check out our interview. Can you tell us about yourself and your photographic background?

My journey in to fashion photography wasn’t actually planned. I started off modelling and went to Milan for a season, once there I was hugely intimidated by the industry and I took time off and went to photography college in DIT Temple Bar. At the time I loved fine art photography and thought I would travel the world hanging my work in exhibitions. I used to be obsessed with abandoned factories and would shoot these for weeks on end. I did this for a short period and had some success in London and New York with the sale of my work however art is a slow process and financially it didn’t add up so I knew something had to change, so I turned my lens on models. I found this process terrifying and I’ll always remember Irish model Naomi Cullen being one of the first models I ever photographed. I was so nervous in front of this porcelain skinned, fiery red haired beauty but she became a muse of mine and slowly my career took off. What brand of photography gear do you use and why?

If budgets weren’t an issue I would shoot on transparency film with a Hasselblad camera. It’s a beautiful slow process of shooting which makes you really engage with your subject. I shot some work in this way for The New York Photo Festival and fell in love. However being realistic I’m a Canon fan, probably because they are work horses. I’ve had my 1DS Mark III for 5 years now and it hasn’t failed me once. I’ve used it in the snow and desert and it’s still working as well as the day I got it. What is your favourite piece of equipment you own?

It’s not too photo related, however the JBL Charge speakers have become my latest kit essential. Having good music during a shoot helps keep it fun and makes everyone get in to the mood a bit more. The portable speakers are great because they connect via Bluetooth and act as a charger for my iPhone! What five key things would you say it takes to be a photographer?

Above: Darren Kennedy’s latest collaboration with Louis Copeland

Passion is a major one, without it you won’t get up for early call times or work extensively long hours. Persistence is vital as you hear the word ‘no’ very often. Being resourceful is also key as often times you are working to a set budget and you need to lift the standards without spending a fortune. Surprisingly being physically fit is a big one too, the job takes a lot out of you, working long hours, moving sets and equipment all day, sleeping few hours if you’re on location and maintaining team morale so for this being

38

- INTERVIEW -

fit really helps. Finally the last thing, I’d say charisma. A photo shoot doesn’t just come about because of the photographer, there is a whole team of people who all want to have input in the finished image, so being able to navigate a crew and get along with everyone on set is vital. What would you say is your primary value to fashion photography?

I would hope it to be that I create images that not only people enjoy and makes them buy the clothes featured but also that they engage with the story I’m telling. I came on to the scene when female eroticism in fashion wasn’t really explored that much in an elegant way and it was something I was drawn to. Whether that’s a seductive war time story with a model in lingerie in the Japanese gardens or a hot swimwear couple on the beach, I strive to capture the moments which play all this out. I read once that any photographer has to find their woman so I hope I’ve made a nice representation of what I think is feminine and beautiful.

publicity but without selling out I guess. For me sexuality is at its best where mystery is involved and when models become more personalities with a long line of endorsements behind them it can become difficult to recreate that authenticity. Do you see a difference between international and Irish models?

I think we have some phenomenal models in Ireland, who all work internationally really well. The thing with the internationals is they usually come from a much bigger gene pool, so of course the Irish girls are at a disadvantage being a minority in comparison to those who come from countries with a bigger selection. However the Irish models are holding their own such as Laura O’Grady, Li Ann, Jude Rea and Sam Homan who have all bagged themselves major international work. On the island it’s hard for Irish models to become exposed to international standards and clients as they simply don’t have access to this type of exposure. If they want to take modelling seriously then in order to grow and better themselves they will have to fly the nest at some point. It’s terrific when they do as it only helps to raise the standards here in Ireland.

Describe your style in three words?

It’s smart, comfortable and simple. Do you have a preference of natural or strobes for shooting and why?

I adore sunshine, natural intense sunshine. I love images that are sun drenched where everything glistens and looks alive. Maybe it’s because I grew up in Ireland where we don’t have that much sun, but to me everything looks better in this light. Where has been your favourite destination to shoot and why?

I like shooting in places where I feel comfortable, it reflects in the work I produce. So on that note, I would say Cape Town without doubt. I first fell in love with the city four years ago when I went over to shoot a documentary with Marian Finucane and I’ve been going back ever since. There’s a magic in the air I haven’t found anywhere else. The light is amazing and the people are so chilled and laid back that you feel as though anything is possible.

What do you do in your spare time, if you have any?

I haven’t had a lot in the last three years and it’s something I’m working on creating time for. However I always find myself coming up with new projects or ideas. At the moment I’m working on quite a large global project which is eating in to my free time, but it’s a passion project so I don’t mind. Otherwise you’ll find me sweating it out in a bikram yoga studio or running a forest trail as I’m a running addict.

Whose work has influenced you most?

What has been your most memorable moment in your career so far?

It varies; Mariano Vivanco never fails to wow. However lately I find myself drawn more to emerging talents like Lukasz Pukowiec, Sevda Albers and Jacob Sutton.

There has been many, my first destination shoot was a big thing I remember but recently I got to shoot international supermodel Nathalie Edenburg who has graced the covers of L’Officiel, Elle, Vogue and Marie Claire. We had a lot in common as she’s a fellow yogi and an amazing painter so in between shots we were gossiping about Matisse and yoga poses! She’s incredible and I’m plotting ways to get to shoot with her again, pure magic!

What makes a model interesting to shoot?

I’m most interested in models who I don’t know that much about. I work off my initial reactions to them; these are at their best when I first meet them. I find with models who are everywhere it can be difficult to find something new in them, like their allure has faded. For models it’s a delicate balancing act where they still need

LA CAVERNA Beautiful, sophisticated and warm, are just a few of many words we would use to describe the reopening and media night of La Caverna last month. Not only was it a night about this sensational restaurant, but also a charity event in aid of the Peggy Mangan Foundation. This Foundation has been established to support those that are afflicted by Alzheimers and to help raise awareness about the disease. It was an evening accompanied by sweet music (supplied by Amy McCalister) and fresh hors d’oeuvres. Each guest was greeted by the fabulous PR manager for the night Mr Graeme Moore and the host and proud restaurant owner Mr Daniel Balau. We were dying to find out more. ‘The wine cellar is over 300 years old, my favourite part, you can really feel the history’ he said beaming with pride. Originally from Italy, Mr Balau took over La Caverna in 2006 and has made it his own ever since. ‘We have a vast selection

of over 120 wines, every single bottle can be sold by the glass, and it makes it more affordable, so u can have everything from a lovely Italian Prosecco to a heavy weight Don Perignon.’ The decor of the restaurant is very unique and heavily influenced by a modern take on classic Italian style. This three story restaurant/wine bar gives their customers the freedom to come in for a large meal or a glass of wine at any given time; it is also situated in the heart of temple bar which makes it extremely accessible. The menu is another major strong point, featuring sumptuous steaks, refreshing seafood, pastas and light snacks ranging from as little as eleven euro. The amazing prices, delectable food and unbeatable wine selection were only further complimented by bubbly staff that kept smiles on their faces and had fun with the guests the entire night. We will definitely be paying them a visit again very soon!

Q&A WITH . . .

ROB CONDON MFI Magazine caught up with stylist Rob Condon to see what it is he has been working on lately. Rob has been working in the fashion industry for a long time now and we were dying to find out a little inside info for you all.

What would be your dream shoot or collaboration?

It has to be hands down Cheryl Cole. How would you describe your own personal style?

I am quite a casual dresser, I am more of a tee shirt, jeans, cons and a leather jacket. I think in my ‘job’ I am styling so many shoots and shows when comes to downtime it has to be casual.

Hey Rob, Tell us what you love most about your job?

I love that it’s always changing and so fast paced. One day you can be on a high fashion shoot and next day be styling a commercial. Being my own boss is a plus, and it allows me the freedom to be creative and I think if you love your ‘job’ is doesn’t seem like work. been working on lately?

challenges in becoming a stylist is “getting started’ and making contacts. I was lucky enough when I met with Derek Daniels from Assets Model Agency; he has given me advice and helped me out a lot and it went from there.

What’s a common mistake you tend to see guys falling into, in today’s industry?

I think some guys have gone a little over the top, much when it comes to male grooming with over shaping eye brows and false tan, it’s a bit too much for me.

What kind of projects have you

Everything right across the board from fashion shows, editorials, commercial work and most recently TV. Other recent gigs that have been really creative include a Spring Summer bridal campaign for Rice ‘n’ Roses, Cork and I have done a few shoots for the newly opened hair salon, Sugar Cubed. These shoots were really cool and fun as it is a new, young and trendy hair salon. Tells us a little bit about your styling Masterclass for teenagers

Assets Model Agency, Model Mayhem Masterclass is about training young people and affording them a full and wide-ranging introduction into the world of Fashion and Modelling. It’s a fun day and the teenagers love it. We taking it on the road this Summer and we have confirmed a Model Mayhem Masterclass in the Silvers Springs, Cork, 4 July.

Where and who is ‘IT’ for you when it comes to male grooming?

What is your favourite menswear store in Dublin and why?

It would have to be Christian Shannon at Brown Sugar, South William Street.

I think menswear in Ireland in general has become a lot stronger and more fashion forward over the years. I’m a bit of mix and match guy from high street to high end brands.

What’s the best style tip you can give to guys looking to develop their style?

What was one of the biggest challenges you had to overcome as a stylist?

I have being booked to do some shoots later in the year in South Africa so I am really excited about that!

Always wear what you feel good and comfortable in and don’t overdo it. Take a trend but make it your own. What’s in the pipeline for Rob Condon?

I think one of the biggest

IT’S BOW-TIME! JAMES BUTLER The elusive bow-tie has long been a firm favourite of the fashion world. Whether as the finishing touch to a fabulous evening ensemble, or as the quirky feature of a fun daytime look, the bow-tie offers its wearer originality that other accessories simply fail to achieve. While ladies have their pick of all things glitz and glamour from necklaces to earrings and beyond, we gentlemen can allow our inner magpie to flourish with the vast array of colourful collar pieces available today.

and available at the debitcard pleasing price of between €35 and €40, the range allows its customer to choose from a vast array of printed pieces that will set him apart from the crowd. Take, for example the car and taxi printed bow-ties. Why not team these with a classic bomber jacket,

One only has to look at the red carpets of recent seasons to see that the bowtie is having a moment. Gone are the humdrum black silk pieces that accompanied A-list actors at awards ceremonies, and in their place are luxurious velvets in rich jeweled tones (all cleverly coordinated with corresponding pocket squares and lapel pins). Who can forget Jared Leto’s infamous burgundy bow-tie at The Oscars? But, such dapper details are not exclusive to the Hollywood elite. A peruse around the High Street will show that almost all of our favourite menswear stores are offering extensive ranges of reasonably priced men’s accessories, not to mention the fabulous designer pieces boasted by department stores. With this in mind, it’s essential that when we venture into the wonderful world of bow-ties, we strive to find unusual pieces that reflect our own style and personality. There’s nothing worse than walking down Grafton street in your latest look and having a collarbased catastrophe with someone in the same neck-piece (a fate I’ve thankfully managed to avoid). After all, we don’t want to end up looking like every Tom, Dick(ie) and Harry now, do we?

buttoned up polo shirt and chinos for a retro Americana look? Add a bare ankle, preppy loafers and wayfarer shades and you’ve acquired off-duty Don Draper perfection. Or for a more luxurious evening look, style this romantic rose-print bow-tie with a white tuxedo blazer and black slim fit suit pants. Then complete with a red lapel pin to achieve an aesthetic that even James Bond would be proud of. Keeping with evening wear, try jazzing up your tuxedo with this bar-coded bow-tie- simply slip on some white patent leather shoes and a white pocket square to achieve monochrome perfection. Finally, with summer (possibly!) fast approaching, play around with colour with these mask print and stain-glass pieces. A fun coral blazer, crisp white shirt and cobalt blue chinos would look sublime with either of these bow-ties, and will leave you looking sunshine ready (albeit minus the sun itself). So gentlemen, with these fabulous pieces to choose from, which bow-tie shall you try?

So, where does one find this blissful balance of individuality and style? Well, ‘Marthu Bow-Ties’, available in The Design House, provide the perfect solution. Marthu offer a full range of bespoke bowties in every dapper design imaginable. Made from 100% cotton,

Products available in The Design House. For more info contact jola. wojciechowska@marthu.com

‘The inspiration behind S / S ’14 was the idea of perceptuality, it’s a concept that everyone is experiencing their own idea of reality. It’s based on their perception of the world and its surroundings and its portrayed through the idea that reality is one and everyone has their own perception. Life is a little more black and white than we seem to portray it. This collection and in particular the leather jackets are heavily inspired by Irish artist Francis Bacon’s three paintings in 1949, Head I, Head II and Head III.’

‘The use of kobe cow leather which was directly imported and tanned in Japan signifies the soft and subtle approach to reinterpreting classic biker jackets. The undertone of the design on the cuffs is an interpretation of five fingers on each sleeve (each sleeve represents a hand) while the two belts on the black jacket represent two arms holding our ideas in captivity. The black jacket symbolises the darker aesthetic and macabre of the brand and is parallel to the idea of perception. The white and black jacket represents the sway in balance between people’s perceptions of reality, the use of off centre zips on the front and back of the jacket signify the idea that life can be seen as being quite black and white.’
