- TECHNOLOGY -

The Times , They Are A Changing! The time we live in is moving at a fast pace. The growing prevalence of new technologies is starting to have a major impact on our lives. At best all we can hope to do is to stay ahead of the curve and when it comes to fashion, this is a necessity. You may ask yourself, “Why I should care? This is a fashion magazine.” The fact is that technology is making its way into the fashion industry. Whether that be in clothes, runners or accessories, there is a clear trend developing that suggests technology will have to be catered for. It is our job as fashion enthusiasts to ensure we hold these technological advancements in clothing to the same high standard of quality as designs currently present. Smartwatches seem to be the most obvious presence in this new era of technological fashion. Often watches are an essential accessory for most men and when they are worn correctly they truly enhance an outfit. As well as telling the time (obviously!) it gives access to emails, messages and reminders. The most noteworthy product that offers hope for style is the Pebble Smart watch. Its popularity is enormous. It smashed the record for crowd funding for Kickstarter whilst still in the development stage. It looks sleek, modern and stylish. Its digital face is crisp and clear. With a variety of colours this watch will fit in with most outfits whilst adding an extra dimension of usefulness for most men. If all technological advancements are as promising as the Pebble Smart watch seems to be, then it won’t be too difficult for fashion enthusiasts to get onboard!

KICKING IT FRESH

1 / ADIDAS ZX FLUX A true heavyweight of sneakers this summer, we love the vibrant colours, they scream summer. Adidas marquee product is really starting to hit this season, with the Adidas ZX Flux proving a standout. Heritage inspired, but totally with the times, the ZX Flux is looking strong in tonal and printed colour ways. Easy to wear and easy on the wallet, look for everyone to Flux with this model all summer.

2 / PUMA SUEDE Truth be told, the PUMA Suede never really left. For years, the model has attained classic status and had a loyal line of wearers. Its rap roots and simple styling provide instant nostalgia and make for an easy wear for any sector of style. This summer should be big for the model. Thanks to fresh colour ways and a growing roster of hip-hop artists, the Suede is looking strong in 2014.

3 / NIKE ROSHE RUN Only a few years ago, the Nike Roshe Run was hailed as the surprise hit of the century. A new running silo designed for casual wear? It all makes sense now. In 2014, the only surprise is that the silo is still going strong. The secret? A loyal following and awesome updates.

2

While the OG Roshe Run is sure to star this summer, the NM, NM Breeze, Hyperfuse, Woven and Slip On variations have the Sportswear silo looking sharp all season.

4 / NIKE NEW BALANCE 1300 The New Balance 1300 has seen its highs and lows, but summer 2014 could be another peak for the retro runner. While NB has always had a niche following, the floodgates opened last year as many customers made room in their budgets for the premium pairs the heritage brand has become known for. Look out for the New Balance 1300 this season.

SUMMER SKIN CARE Now that summer is just about here, a lot of us are looking to clean up our act and add a burst of colour and life to our wardrobes. We feel that you should do the same with your skin, it’s something many men are now taking seriously and we don’t see why not. It’s well known that the sun can have a huge effect when it comes to ageing your skin, and us men should want to keep our reputation for ageing better than our female counterparts. We’ve put together a few basic product types which will keep you looking fresh faced through the warmer months and years to follow.

DEAN BRADY

Nivea for Men Exfoliating Face Scrub 75ml €6.09 @ Boots

FACE WASH Maca Root Face Wash 125ml €12.95 @ The Body Shop A good face wash is the foundation to a solid skincare regime. Always avoid the cheaper products that you can pick up anywhere, they’re full of bad chemicals which end up drying out your skin in the end. Ideally you should get your hands on a soap free face wash to avoid leaving your skin feeling tight. A quality wash will remove all dirt and grime and give your skin a clean, refreshing feel.

MOISTURISER Nivea Men Active Age Day and Night €15.99 each

FACIAL SCRUB Lab Series Invigorating Face Scrub 100ml €28.00 @ Boots These products should be used as an alternative to your face wash a couple of times a week. They’re not made for daily use as they can irritate skin if they are overused! Facial scrub is a type of exfoliation which removes all dead skin cells, leaving you with new skin and a healthy glow!

A quality moisturiser is a man’s best friend! It does exactly what it says on the tin. Use it daily to keep skin fresh and hydrated.

EYE CREAM Nivea Men Active Age Double Action Balm 75ml €9.99

Elder Flower Cooling Eye Gel 15ml €9.95 @The Body Shop Bulldog Original Eye Roll-On 15ml €6.49 @Boots As eyes are more sensitive with thinner skin than the rest of your face, it’s important that you use a product designed specifically for eyes. An eye cream is perfect for this area and will give your under eyes the boost they need!

1 / RAINCOATS

3

As we all know here in Ireland, there’s no promise of dry weather during the summer months. Most festivals end up being a mud bath so a good raincoat can be an absolute life saver! Check out this Farah Vintage Navy Partridge Jacket €99 Available at Arnotts

2 / WELLINGTON BOOTS God only knows what sort of stuff you’ll have to walk through at some stage. You’ll often be knee deep in crap and that old pair of runners simply won’t last a day, never mind the weekend. A sturdy pair of wellies are the only piece of footwear that’ll be cut out for the job at hand.

3 / SHORTS When it comes to shorts there’s no better item to incorporate a jazzy print. Look no further than our number one choice from Tommy Hilfiger. These tropical floral print shorts are sure to look the business wherever you party this summer. Tommy Hilfiger Red Floral Print Retro Short €99.90 Available at Arnotts

- PROFILE -

FASHION ILLUSTRATOR

KILLIAN FALLON Killian Fallon’s love of art goes hand in hand with a natural born flair for illustration. He has had a passion for creating characters his whole life, all 21 years of it! He began writing and illustrating his own comics and ‘Zines’ from a very young age. Killian says he has always had a fundamental interest in people, and through his illustration, he strives to create personalities that come to life on the page. His professional illustration career began as an intern for a graphic design company in his country of birth, Dubai. It was here he learned to hone his business and media skills, working to deadlines on numerous projects including producing weekly illustrations and articles for business and community magazines. He has recently extended his body of work to include fashion illustration. Hi Killian, thanks for meeting with MFI today! Let’s get started with a little bit of background info… MFI: What made you choose fashion illustration as a career path? Killian: I’ve always been into illustration. My whole life I’ve created my own characters and built stories around my art. My school books were absolutely covered in my drawings! I suppose I first started to consider it as a career when I was about 14/15 doing an internship for an Irish magazine in Dubai. The feedback was just so positive, and I’ve always been lucky to have my family’s encouragement. I’m now in my 2nd year at NCAD studying textiles, and it was through one of my course projects last year that really confirmed to me that fashion illustration is what I want to do! MFI: Do you think that illustration is something that can be taught, or is it a case of you either have it or you don’t?! Killian: It’s not about making something look realistic, which is the general perception out there! For me it’s all about confidence, wit and about bringing a ‘charm’ to your drawing. In the work that I like, it’s about personality and how much a single image can say. My favourite thing is a seemingly ‘childish’ drawing. I love to see a crap drawing! You do have to want to wake up and draw every day; it is a way of life! MFI: What piece of advice would you give

to aspiring illustrators? Killian: Don’t ever be afraid submit your work! If you can’t draw an apple perfectly, so what?! That’s not what illustration is about. If you have an idea, draw it, and send it to someone! MFI: Where do you find inspiration? Killian: Anything and everything inspires me. I always keep a sketchbook on me everywhere I go; I do tend to get some weird looks if I’m just sitting there sketching somebody in a café or something! MFI: Who are some of your favourite and most inspiring illustrators? Killian: One of my all-time favourites and someone whose work I grew up with is Steve Simpson.

When you have a commission, you want to get the best result for the client, so consultations are key. MFI: What do you enjoy most about the illustration process? Killian: It’s fun to me, I just really enjoy it! I get lost in the moment, I don’t feel tense or stressed; I just do what comes naturally. I love experimenting and coming up with original ideas. When you try out something new and it actually works, it’s the best thing! I love having complete control over the whole process!

“ Illustration will always have a place, regardless of the method!”

I also interned with Gary Card who is based in London. That was a fantastic experience, and a great opportunity to see how illustration works as a business.

MFI: What are some of the common myths about your profession and do they differ in reality? Killian: There is definitely a stereotype out there that illustrators sit alone in dark rooms and draw for hours on end…and its true!!

MFI: How do you see fashion illustration as an industry adapting to growing technology trends? Killian: Illustration will always have a place, regardless of the method!

I thought I didn’t like digital art, but then I started using Adobe Illustrator myself and realised I just didn’t like how other people use digital art! I thought that I would be a pen to paper guy for ever, but I’ve changed my mind completely. MFI: How important is it to be original? Killian: I used to really worry about that because I wasn’t sure if I had my own distinctive style, but with time I’ve realised it’s better to just be yourself! Your own original style will emerge over time. I’ve always liked drawing figures without a face, or I’ll draw a floating face with no body, it used to freak out my friends! For me, fashion should be about the clothes, not the model, so I feel my illustration style does lend itself well to the fashion world! MFI: What are your plans for the future? Killian: Right now I’m adding to my body of work. I’m also creating a magazine inspired by the comic book ‘Ghost World’ by Daniel Clowes and based on my interpretation of a modern goddess. I’ll be in London for the summer to build my portfolio. MFI: Thanks Killian! You can check out more of Killian’s work at killianfallon.tumblr.com and www. communally.blogspot.ie MAIREAD VICKERS

- GROOMING -

FIND YOUR PRODUCT Today the male grooming industry is booming, we’re going to take a look at hair products and what one will suit your hair type and style you want to achieve. Gone are the days of grabbing the largest tub of gel from the pound shop. We now have a variety of different products to get the looks we desire.

DEAN BRADY

GELS These are usually water based products which are ideal to get a wet, sleek look. You’ll normally find them in firm or light holds which match the texture of your hair. Don’t be fooled by cheap supermarket gels which will tend to flake and break, so if you do choose this type of product to style your hair, make sure it’s the real deal.

HAIRSPRAYS Just like gel, a good hairspray will dry hard, it’s a great way to hold a style in place and add texture.

POMADE These are a great way to add shine to a look while maintaining a solid hold. It’s perfect for adding texture to short styles and adding separation to long hair. This usually only works with thick hair though, fine hair will usually look greasy when pomade is applied.

WAXES These products are much like pomade in that the application is the same and they’re good for managing thick hair. However wax is applied to completely dry hair, short cuts like buzz cuts and flat tops work fantastically with these products.

MUDS / FIBERS Many muds and fibers will give a matte finish which is perfect for those bed head looks. They can give the ideal amount of texture and separation to dishevelled hair styles.

CREAMS A styling cream is very much like a soft wax. Its light consistency makes it great for controlling flyaway hair while leaving it looking like there’s nothing in it at all.

- INTERVIEW -

VETERAN VIEWS A veteran in the fashion industry, we sat down with owner and director of Assets Model Agency, Derek Daniels after celebrating their 25th birthday as a leading model agency in Ireland. Check out what he had to say. Hey Derek, How are you keeping? Busy we hope? Keeping busy, of course. I mean, the recession has affected everybody with a business over the last few years. So we are constantly trying to put together shoots and new ideas for the agency; It’s more about creating the work, rather than waiting for it. For the likes of Glenda Gilson who is getting married and Sarah Morrisey, these occasions are opportunities for big shoots to happen because the general public are interested in that kind of stuff. Shows and other projects are coming back around throughout charity events which are great for models and the agency. So it’s picking back up for sure. Congratulations on Assets turning 21 recently. How does it feel to own a successful model agency for over two decades? You must be proud? Yes, I happened to only realise we turned 21 by accident on facebook. My ex business partner Margaret Humphries who is now retired and living in Australia sent me a happy birthday message and when I replied “but it’s not my birthday” I then was informed we had turned 21.

So yes, it made me feel great, and to see we were still being recognised by the big stars like Colin Farrell and Yvonne Keating who sent out lovely messages through social media was great, nice to see. What is it you think makes Assets Ireland’s leading model agency? Well, that’s not a title the agency gave itself. But I suppose it came over the years, with the combination of fashion and PR models we had on our books, and the amount of shows we were doing; up to nearly 7/8 gigs per week. And we had a lot of personalities signed with assets, models who were looking to build a profile and Margaret was always great at spotting them before they were known. How did you begin your career in the fashion industry? I actually began modelling when I was only a kid, about eight or nine. My aunt was a fashion promoter, so it was something I was always around. Those days she worked with the likes of Grace O Shaughnessy who was a big time model in the 60’s. As I got older then around eighteen I did a lot of TV shows like live at 3 and the late late show, mainly doing fashion shows around Ireland and some in the UK. But I worked as a chef as well so it was only part time then. When the opportunity came about to open assets years later, I went on board with Mags who was my booker at the time. We were very lucky actually, one of Margaret’s friends Louis Murray who owned a nightclub gave us our office free of charge for two years so we could get on our feet, that was a blessing. We ran it for the love of it and as we became more known over the first two years it just went boom after that.

- INTERVIEW -

What has been the most memorable fashion show you have directed? Now that’s a tough one. I would say I have directed between about one and two thousand fashion shows in my time so I wouldn’t be able to pick out one single show. I really enjoyed the “Off the rails” shows for RTE and Xpose live, particularly the first one in the RDS, it was a huge show and I was proud of that. What’s the best thing about your job? I have always liked the freedom of being my own boss, I’ve always enjoyed that. I would never see myself as a person who works a Monday to Friday job, I’ll work Monday to Sunday if the work is there. That’s another thing about being self-employed, you need to always be creating the work as much as you can. Even when I hear people say there’s a bank holiday coming up, it’s just another Monday for me. When scouting for a model what is it you look for? The look changes from time to time, but now days you’re looking for more of “plain” beauty, somebody who wants it and is ambitious, because it is a tough job out there. Some models can cross between commercial and fashion, but that’s rare to find they are two different genres of modelling and markets. John Compton re–signed with Assets recently, have you always stayed friends with John, even when he was directing his own agency in Dublin?

Photographer David Park

Yes, John worked in Assets as a booker a while back and after that he went and done his own thing with Compton Models. We always stayed in touch though and remain good friends. He will always be welcome to Assets and he has been doing quite a bit of work since coming back to us. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. Check out assetsmodels.com Like them on Facebook to find out about their next open day. Follow Assets on Twitter @AssetsAgency

SUMMER SCENTS Strike the right note this summer!

1

2

There is no season as important as Summer when it comes to choosing a fragrance. As the temperatures rise slowly but surely, body odour becomes more of a problem. It’s time to ditch the deep, warm scents and opt for something with a fresher feel. We’ve put together three of our favourite summer fragrances which are sure to have you smelling like Summer!

DEAN BRADY

1 / DAVIDOFF COOL WATER This is simply one of the best Summer fragrances out there, which is why it’s remained such a popular choice over the years. It offers a sharp, fresh, masculine scent that will give you those deep blue oceanic vibes.

2 / GIORGIO ARMANI

ACQUA DI GIO

3

Once again another absolute classic for this time of year! This light, citrus smelling fragrance is always a winner during those warm stuffy afternoons. The pure freshness is sure to keep you feeling clean and cool this is summer.

3 / VALENTINO UOMO This relatively new fragrance has been a massive hit so far! Many experts say it’s a sweeter version of the very popular Dior Homme. The bottle is beautifully crafted, like a work of art, and the scent inside definitely doesn’t disappoint. Its fruity smell is ideal for the warmer months and is certainly on our wish list.

32

- LIFESTYLE -

KEEP CALM AND HAVE A COCKTAIL There’s nothing more refreshing than a perfectly stirred, ice cold cocktail. As men we usually try to steer clear of bright coloured, fruity, girly drinks. So here are a few of our favourite cocktails which won’t result in you having to hand over your man card to your mates.

DEAN BRADY

WHISKEY SOUR Just the name alone oozes masculinity. It’s not the biggest or toughest of cocktails but the concoction of whiskey and lemon makes this drink ideal for the summer months.

JACK AND COKE The crisp combination of Jack Daniels and Coke is a universal manly drink. The simple recipe is sure to put some bass in your voice, however be warned, a couple too many of these and you’ll be seeing double.

OLD FASHIONED Order this bad boy and you’ll receive nods of approval from your fellow men at the bar. Unlike the name suggests, it’s still popular today, but watch out, go overboard on this bourbon based mix and you’ll be hanging the next morning.

JAMESON GINGER AND LIME As we found out at a recent press event, this delightful cocktail is an absolute treat! Usually served in a highball glass, the concoction of Jameson whiskey and Ginger Ale is topped off perfectly with a squeezed lime wedge. Don’t be fooled by the beautiful taste though, too many of these and you’ll have a one way ticket to mouldy town.

JEAN GENIE

Shopping for jeans used to be a simple task for guys. They usually came in two colours – blue or black, had five pockets and either they fit or they didn’t. But that was then and this is now, and with a vast array of denim styles now readily available, it’s safe to say that finding the right pair is never easy. You may find the names of jean styles confuse the hell out of you, and let me tell you, you’re not alone! Slim, skinny, straight, relaxed, classic, tapered, and the list goes on and on…! So if you feel overwhelmed and frustrated on your next shopping trip, there’s no harm in asking a sales assistant for the exact fit you’re looking for, after all, it’s their job! But if you need a quick formula for a failsafe purchase read on because MFI’s guide will have you well on your way to your best denim season yet…

MAIREAD VICKERS

SIZE MATTERS

WHAT TO MEASURE

If you usually wing it and use guesswork to figure out your size, you may fall prey to ‘vanity sizing’. While the trend started in women’s sizing, it has slowly moved over into menswear meaning that frustratingly, different brands have different fits.

WAIST Measure around your waistline where you like your jeans to sit

RISE

So next time you’re in the store, ignore the size tags and ask the fitting room assistant to take your measurements. If you know your vitals and size in that particular brand you can use it as a bench mark for future purchases elsewhere.

Measure front and back from the bottom of the crotch to the top of the waistband to find the rise

Check out our guide to measurements here-

INSEAM

Stylist’s Tip

Measure from the bottom of the crotch to the ankle bone

In general it’s best to avoid jeans labelled ‘low-rise’ as they will make your legs appear shorter. Most guys looking for a classic fit jean need an in-seam length of 32 inches or higher.

ANKLE Measure loosely around your bare ankle for straight or slim styles

TRIPLE YOUR STYLE POINTS For a sure-fire way to cover all your denim requirements, remember that 3 is the magic number! Stylist’s Tip

Always check your rear view! Make sure your back pockets aren’t too low, too long or too large - these types of pockets will add unnecessary bulk and create a saggy appearance.

This one is particularly good for the vertically challenged guys out there, as the cuff element is leg-lengthening.

- INTERVIEW -

Photographer Sarah Orr

JUSTINE KING MFI Magazine sat down with fashionista Justine King, who is on top of her game right now. Check out what she thinks about men’s fashion in Ireland.

Hey Justine, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. What have you been up to since we last met you at Dublin Fashion Festival?

experiences and the worst is the competition, as it can be very tough and cut throat.

Since, last September? Loads of fun things! I have been working with lots of new clients both in terms of brands and personal styling as well as some really cool published editorials. I’ve also been working with a new start-up called OPSH. I do a lot of their blog content and all of their styling. I’ve also been doing some weekly upcycling fashion segments for RTE two’s “TwoTube”. That’s been really fun as customising and upcycling is something I have done at home since I was a kid but not something I’ve ever really thought about showing anywhere until RTE approached me.

How hard was it for you to get where you are today? It’s such a cliché, but I genuinely believe that if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life. And that’s true for me, I would be writing an article at 11 o clock at night & it doesn’t feel like I’m working. So it’s enjoyable, but I have definitely worked hard. I mean you do a lot of free work to get where you need to be and it can be all hours of the day, but it has to be worth it. It’s very much a closed circle. Do you think it’s important to give talent that is not established that chance to get their work seen?

I’ve also continued working with Colin Horgan since Dublin Fashion Festival. I suppose that’s where that relationship started, we’ve become good friends since then and been working well together.

I think Ireland is a great place for showing off undiscovered talent. In the last two years it’s almost become a trend for editors to showcase Irish designers in their editorials, which is brilliant. I’ve always believed Ireland is such a creative place. We are known for our musicians, actors and even our crafts so why not our fashion designers?

And KFW 14, How was that experience for you? Kerry Fashion Week was absolutely brilliant, I met some amazing people. Everyone from the organisers, the designer and the models were some of the nicest people I have ever met, and so supportive of each other. I had always said that we need a Dublin Fashion Week to rival London and Milan but after being at KFW I’ve realised that maybe it could be the fashion capital of Ireland. It’s just going to get bigger and better.

Have you ever been star struck before? Definitely, I met Rachel Zoe one time, in New York at a fashion show I was working at. I saw her name on the guest list and we knew the interns had to bring the guests to their seats. So I waited for her to come in and next minute Rachel Zoe is asking me where her seat was. I could barely speak. But, that’s about the only time I have been star struck in recent years.

How did you get into styling? I studied Drama Studies in Trinity and I got really into costume design. I didn’t know what a stylist was at that point. But I loved mood boards, researching trends and the shows that we could go and purchase some clothes instead of making them from scratch. In my third year, I travelled to New York and did an internship with fashion designer Catherine Malandrino. Then when I left college I moved back for a year and did two more internships, first with Fashion PR agency PR Consulting and then with my all time idol, fashion stylist Mel Ottenberg, who is Rihanna’s stylist.

What do you think is the “it” item for men right now? I actually think it’s a lot easier to be a well-dressed man than to be a well-dressed woman. Women have so much more variety and that can get confusing. But for men there are a few staple items you need to be a sharp dresser. Ultimately though, the “it” item right now is probably footwear. I think men can pull any outfit together with the right footwear. How would you compare style from Dublin to New York?

As we know you have worked for fashion shows at New York Fashion Week & worked with some of the biggest designers in the world? What is the Best & worst thing about working in the fashion industry abroad?

New York is an interesting one, because a lot of the people you see are tourists and then the Wall Street men and women who wear their expensive suits. But, I think Dublin men have got so trendy over the last few years, especially on South William Street which is like the style hub for menswear.

When I was in New York, it was amazing and I worked with some international campaigns and designers that you’re never going to get work on in Ireland.

My best male friend is one of the most stylish people I know. We originally met in New York and I suppose he kind of emulated the style there- cool, street kind of vibe and since coming back to Ireland he dresses so sharp, matching his pocket square to his socks. I think Irish men are no longer afraid of looking trendy and want to stand out.

But at the same, every second person wants to be a stylist in New York. Whereas in Ireland, it’s a little bit easier to build a name for yourself in the industry. So I suppose the best thing working abroad is the amazing

- INTERVIEW -

What’s your biggest don’t for a guy? JERSEYS, football, G.A.A, basketball, whatever sport it may be. Unless you are at a match supporting your team, please, jerseys should not be worn as an everyday style. How do you put an outfit together? For my personal styling clients, I would usually sit down and talk about their lifestyle. So what are their week to week activities? Then I would talk about what they like and don’t like about their body, maybe their arms or legs? And then I’ll ask if say, someone likes print. Because if not, I find they are often looking for something more elegant and classic. So it just gives me a sense of what they want. Meeting a personal styling client’s brief is much the same as meeting a commercial client’s or magazine editor’s brief- it’s giving them what they want but with my own personal stamp on it. What do you think about fashion rules? Do you follow them? No, I don’t personally follow fashion rules. I think at the end of the day, fashion is all about having fun. I would follow some trends but I feel like breaking the rules is important and that’s what differentiates fashion from style.

One piece of styling advice for our readers? Get your key pieces for your wardrobe and don’t scrimp on them. Good quality pieces are essential and you pay for what you get. So for the extras and hero fashion pieces you can pick up more cheaply but your basics should be of good quality- like jeans, a suit, a good shirt etc. Where can we catch you working soon? MODEL BRIEF

Age 20 Height 6ft 1in (186cm) Eye Colour Blue Hair Colour Brown

ADAM MULCAHY Hobbies I love photography and I am a keen wildlife photographer. I spend a large amount of my free time in woodland and surrounding countryside with my two dogs photographing Ireland’s animals. I have been published in a variety of magazines and publications. I believe photographs can convey much more than words. Photographs of wildlife connect nature to people, and thereby help increase awareness about wildlife and its conservation.

What are your other talents? I have played the trumpet and percussion since a very young age. Music is also important in my life. It is a means of relaxation and also enjoyment. I come from a musical family. My grandfather was the leader of a very successful show band which toured Ireland and England in the 1950’s before the time of D.J’s. People came from miles to dance to their music. It was no surprise that I was introduced to the world of music and performing as soon as I could walk.

Occupation I am currently a full time student. I am in my second year of a four year degree, studying Environmental and Earth system sciences in University College Cork. I also work part time in a local electrical and home ware store.

How competitive are you? I don’t consider myself a competitive person. When I want something I do everything I can to get it. I try to focus on myself and attempt to better myself rather than being better than other people. I have high ambitions and I do everything in my power to reach my full potential. I compete with myself and failure only pushes me to do more the next time.

Favourite food My favourite food must be a homemade beef burger with mature cheddar cheese and bacon in a glazed bun with hand cut, skin-on chips. I have a habit of judging and comparing restaurants on the quality of their beef burger. Favourite TV series My favourite TV series at the moment is Game of Thrones which has just returned for its fourth season this month. It is one of the best fantasy drama television series in recent years. Dragons, direwolves, amazing locations and fighting scenes, there is nothing that Game of Thrones does not deliver. How were you discovered? I attended an open casting for an agency in Cork which was advertised locally. I never imagined I would have what it takes to be a model but it was something I was interested in. After growing up as a triplet with two sisters, fashion and the fashion industry had always been an interest of mine. My girlfriend and I decided to attend the casting and we were both signed to Hotlook Model Management. After spending some time within the industry I made the move to Lockdown models which has been very successful and a great experience thus far. Who is your idol? I have many idols in a variety of my fields of interest. As a model Simon Nessman is a person who has inspired me. At age 24, only four years older than myself, Simon has become one of the world’s most successful male models, recently appearing in Armani Exchange and Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2014 advertisements as well as being the face of Giorgio Armani ‘Acqua di Gio Essenza‘ fragrance campaign.

Favourite city you have been to? I have been to a lot of cities but one city that I love to visit is London. London has a great vibe, whether you’re on the tube or walking on Oxford Street there is a vibrant and exciting aura about the place. It is not as busy or unfriendly as New York. There is such a relaxed atmosphere in London; this is very obvious just by sitting in a coffee shop and watching the world go by. People in London also take a lot more of an interest in their own independent style and this is reflected in the number of independent boutiques that can’t be found in any other city. It’s only a short flight away but it is such a different experience than any Irish city and easily outshines New York, Paris or Barcelona. Do you like to party? Honestly, I love to party (in moderation). I think it is very important to be social and I have met a lot of incredible people while I have been out at night. I think as a young person, we are put under a lot of pressure and stress in college and work life and it is important to have an outlet that you can dance with friends and enjoy yourself. Who is your favourite music artist? My favourite music artist is Kodaline. I have been a fan of Kodaline since they were known as 21 Demands. Since 2011 Kodaline have continued to excel on a national and international level. I had the pleasure of watching them perform at the Indiependence music festival last summer.

MFI STORE PROFILE

ALLEN MENSWEAR Talking shop with Simon Allen, owner of Allen Menswear

While generations have passed through and countless fashion trends have come and gone, Allen Menswear, located in Bray, Co. Wicklow, has been a constant in the seaside town for over 160 years! Trading since 1850, originally the Allen family had a bakery and an off-licence. Later on in 1916 the business evolved and took on the form of the stylish menswear store we see today. Speaking to the third generation and only son Simon, I got the lowdown on trends, must-have items, shopping tips and more…

MAIREAD VICKERS Catering for pretty much any male from a young age right up to a more mature gent, Simon tries not to pigeonhole the store’s style.

“These are the items you should never be without; a great pair of classic jeans, a smart white shirt and really great jacket. Once you have these, then you can add your own style to outfits with trend based items like printed shirts and coloured chinos.”

“Being located in Bray means we have a huge demographic; we didn’t want to limit ourselves to one area, or one style.”

Further more, Simon describes the changes he has seen in men’s shopping patterns in the last decade.

As a buyer his fashion choices reflect his diverse clientele. Featuring a wide and varied range of items from everyday basics to occasion wear, and presenting in excess of 25 individual brands, including Irish brand 6TH Sense Global Designs, Allen Menswear is a one stop shop that offers a little bit of everything, and does it well.

“Since the recession, the dynamic of men’s shopping is like a totem pole made up of priorities. So that’s kids, house, wife, responsibilities for everyone else at the top of the pole, unfortunately men are at the very very bottom.” As far as mens’ habits towards shopping, he adds that he realises things have changed hugely, out of necessity. With a constant focus on customer needs, Simon states his willingness to cater their ranges accordingly.

When it comes to examining men’s shopping habits; Simon knows the importance of a varied offering. While having the everyday basics is a hugely important part of his business, he also advises that occasion wear is an absolute must for men.

“This is a business at the end of the day, as well as a fashion store and we have to give people what they want and we’re very adept at doing that.” Going that one step further to suit the customer’s needs is part and parcel of the Allen service.

“Men shop when they have to, rather than as a pastime, and an occasion is a time when they do shop. But we like to give men something for everyday wear as well.” He also adds that over the last 40 years menswear trends have changed radically. “Men used to have to wear a shirt and tie to work no matter what job they were in, it’s changed so much, now everything is more casual.” Listing some of his most popular styles, Simon refers to his ‘bread and butter’ items. He advises that every man should build his wardrobe around good quality basics.

Simon adds that he is happy to take special requests for unusual or hard-to-find items.

Menswear. When you shop at a multi-national, you miss out on these little gems learned through years of hands-on experience. For Simon it’s all about trust and honesty, and it makes sense; he wants his customer to have a positive experience, leave the store in a great new look and spread the word!

“If a customer requests something special we will go to the ends of the earth to get it for them. We often get requests that would be completely off the wall and very hard to source but we will always try to source it, within reason!”

“If somebody tries on something here, and it doesn’t look great, we will suggest something different. We will always try to get them something nicer or better.”

As the store caters for such a vast demographic, Simon and the team frequently deal with the most diverse enquiries. Over the years they have had countless requests for ususual items; anything from detachable collars on shirts to suspenders for socks! According to Simon, his success with sourcing is down to his slew of good contacts in the trade.

As far as the future is concerned, Simon says he hopes the store will have continued success for many years to come, and with his high level of customer service, wide range of brands and styles, teamed with knowledgeable and experienced staff, it’s easy to see another 160.

Unusual requests aside, Simon describes the store as very lucky; “Our customers are really really good and they support us hugely, so they are what keeps us going.” It’s safe to say that customer satisfaction is clearly a priority for Simon and the team. He proceeds to divulge some helpful tips when it comes to shopping; “Never go by the size on the label and always try on. If you’re trying on trousers, remember to allow an extra ¼ inch for gather at the back of the knee. If you’re not too sure, don’t be afraid to ask!” It’s this kind of service that sets aside an independent retailer like Allen

5 QUESTIONS FOR...

CLÉMENTINE MACNEICE Here at MFI Magazine, we love to hear from the experts, so this month we managed to grab a few minutes with Stylist Clémentine MacNeice to hear her words of wisdom on menswear. Clémentine is the stylist to the contestants on The Voice of Ireland, and to presenters Dylan McGrath and Nick Munier on Masterchef Ireland (Nick was recently nominated for most stylish man at The VIP Style Awards, so this lady obviously knows what she’s talking about!). Alongside her extensive TV work, Clémentine styles photo shoots and numerous commercials, is a regular in womenswear magazines and runs her own personal style blog: clementinemac.blogspot.ie. We sent MFI Magazine’s James Butler to pick her brain on everything from Irish men’s personal style, to her favourite places to shop! 1. MFI: What do you think of Irish men’s personal style? Clémentine: I think Irish men have become much more experimental and daring in their fashion choices in recent years. They seem more fashion conscious and influenced by celebrity style. Gone are the days of every man wearing a boot cut jean and tucked in shirt!! The men of Ireland are definitely beginning to make their fashion mark! 2. MFI: You dress both men and women in your work, do you have a preference? Clémentine: It’s difficult to compare dressing the guys and gals. The guys are definitely more open to new things and are not afraid to go out of their comfort zone. I have to say though, there’s nothing better than giving the girls a total makeover and making them feel a million bucks. 3. MFI: Where are your favorite places to shop for menswear? Clémentine: Zara, River Island, The Kooples and Reiss. Reiss do a fine suit for men. 4. MFI: Who do you think are the best dressed male celebrities around at the moment? Clémentine: Irish celebrity wise, it has to be Darren Kennedy- he can’t put a fashion foot wrong! I love Jared Leto and Pharrell’s style as well, they dare to be different and that’s important. Fashion is fun! 5. MFI: And finally, what would be your fail safe tips for our readers that want to improve their style? Clementine: Invest in key pieces. A good leather jacket, a classic winter coat and a good mac. These pieces will take you anywhere.

DAVID GANDY

DEAN BRADY

guys to popularise male models being of a bigger, buffer and healthier frame. Almost overnight he became one of the most recognisable faces in the world back in 2006, when his D&G light blue campaign and iconic advert made him a superstar. Gandy has went on to be the face of many massive campaigns, magazine covers around the world and is still one of the top male models on the planet.

Many of you may be very familiar with Mr. David Gandy and some of you may not, but one thing for sure, his face will most definitely seem familiar. Not only is he a male supermodel, since he rose to fame Gandy has most certainly become a style icon. So here we’re going to take a look at his remarkably successful modelling career over the last thirteen years and tell you a little about his unbelievable sense of masculine style which every guy can take something from.

STYLE Whilst being in the celebrity spotlight Gandy has undoubtedly become a style icon over the last decade. His masculine personal style is always a perfect example of great tailoring and fit. On formal occasions, he is almost always sporting a fine three piece suit which looks as if it’s been tailor made for him. David never complicates a look with an abundance of accessories and his minimal edge style is also evident in his casual wear. You’ll rarely catch this man in crazy prints or colours; he keeps it simple with classic pieces and fit always remaining the most important. If there’s one thing that we can all take from this man’s style it’s that you don’t have to be too eccentric to stand out from the crowd, wearing consistently well fitted clothes and classic basics will always and forever look great, just as Gandy shows.

MODELLING David got his break on an ITV model scouting competition when a university housemate inadvertently entered him; it resulted in victory for Gandy and a contract with the renowned agency Select Model Management. He quickly established himself as a household name in the male modelling world and became a dominant force. Gandy’s rise was even more remarkable considering his breakthrough came in a time that skinny, pale models with feminine like figures was the trend, something which he certainly is not! D.G is well known for being one of the first

SUMMER SUITING LOSE THE TIE

KICK IT CASUAL

This is perhaps the most obvious way to make your suit look more casual. By simply losing the tie and opening a couple of buttons you will get rid of that horrible stuffy feeling we all dread. This look can work especially well with a patterned shirt which will have you looking and feeling cooler.

If you’re looking for a quick way to take the formal edge off your suit just change your footwear. Move away from the typical smart shoes associated with suiting and opt for something more comfortable. These days there really are no rules; it’s very popular to pair up your suit with boots, brogues or even trainers.

GO FOR A T-SHIRT

THE FINER DETAILS

DEAN BRADY

A t-shirt is a classic casual piece of clothing and for that reason it’s the easiest way to dress down your suit. This combo will provide the perfect smart casual look. If you’re wearing a darker suit don’t be afraid to go for a bright or printed t-shirt, however if you’re sporting a lighter coloured suit stick with basic neutral colours.

Once your suit fits correctly you can afford to mess around with the accessories, lose the belt and ruffle up the pocket square for a relaxed vibe. A pair of shades will always add a rock star edge to your look and changing wrist wear can also go a long way, simply changing from a watch to a bracelet or band will bring that chilled out feel to your outfit.

House of Fraser

For you guys out there who love nothing more than to suit up, this time of year can be a tricky period. As temperatures rise it can get a little hot under the collar of that buttoned up shirt and tie. So we’re going to take a look at a few simple ways to dress down that beloved suit of yours to make it more appropriate for summertime.

TRANSITION TIME JAMES BUTLER Ah, Spring/Summer. That fabulous time in fashion when we can finally peel away those pesky layers of winter woollies, dawn our favourite sunglasses and bask in the glorious, stone-splitting heat. Well, almost. Unfortunately for us Irish gentlemen, an impending downpour of rain seems to follow us at any given moment, regardless of what time of the year it claims to be. Thus, it’s essential that we prepare ourselves for such inevitable weather woes. The best way to do so is to make sure that you’re equipped with a lightweight, classic transitional jacket. While this may seem like an easy task to fulfil, some Irish men still deem it acceptable to reach for their classic winter coats and puffer jackets at the slightest glimpse of a chill in the air, resulting in an array of otherwise well dressed men sweating in last season’s overcoats. Of course, one can become overwhelmed at which style of jacket to choose, and it’s easy to be blind sighted by the broad selection of pieces available. With that in mind, I suggest sticking to three timeless, classic styles that seem to appear season after season without fail. Indeed, if you aim to look effortlessly smart and still beat that summer breeze, then look no further than the classic mac, the bomber, and the biker jacket. The mac is the quintessential signifier of a well dressed gentleman. Many trends have inevitably come and gone, but the classic mac has ceased to falter in its ability to transform the overall look of any dapper Dan, with its tailored aesthetic feel. The mac is of course perfect for men that wear suits on a regular basis, offering the perfect summer alternative to their favourite winter Crombie. For more casual dressers, look no further than Topman for a classic bomber at a fabulous price. Topman has long been a favourite of mine for it’s affordable, lightweight and on trend jackets and this season is no different. The bomber can take on many guises, with some designers such as Versace offering fantastical and ornate embellishments or quirky collars, but if you’re looking for something that offers durability in the style stakes this is your buy. Finally, nothing screams ‘laid back cool’ more than the inimitable biker jacket. Having long been a firm favourite within the fash pack, a classic biker is ever so masculine, ever so sophisticated, and ever so chic. Perhaps the most versatile of outerwear pieces, the biker can be filtered into an array of looks, from a classic white tee and skinny jeans ensemble, to the latest skinny joggers with an oversized logo emblazoned sweatshirt. The biker can also transform into evening wear, when paired with a sleek slim fit suit pant, a crisp white tuxedo shirt and a cheeky bow tie- the possibilities are endless. Such a piece is undoubtedly ideal for our summer climate, as it can easily be taken off and slung over our shoulders (or around our waists, for a more adventurous look) should the sun decide to smile upon us for a fleeting moment.
